Floristic survey of genus Ulothrix (Ulotrichaceae, Chlorophyceae) in the State of São Paulo, southeast Brazil. Five species were identified based on their cell morphology, described in detail, and illustrated. Ulothrix tenerrima and U. tenuissima occurred in four municipalities each, U. aequalis var. aequalis f. aequalis in three municipalities, U. zonata in two municipalities, and U. subtilissima in a single municipality; U. tenuissima being presently cited for the first time for the State of São Paulo.

Levantamento florístico do gênero Ulothrix (Ulotrichaceae, Chlorophyceae) no Estado de São Paulo, sudeste do Brasil. Foram identificadas cinco espécies com base em sua morfologia celular externa e interna, descritas em detalhes e ilustradas. Thirty-eight taxa distributed in twenty genera were recorded, among which five were new records for Brazil and nineteen new for the Brazilian Amazon. The most representative genus based on species number was Gomphonema Ehrenberg with six species. In brief, present new records represent a 75% increase in the total number of records for the Brazilian Amazon, and indicates that this region has not only been poorly investigated, but also suggests that its biodiversity assessment is underestimated. These findings highlight the efficacy of the paleolimnological approach as a tool for assessing biodiversity before the human impacts begin to affect the pristine conditions of the area.

Survey was carried out of family Bacillariaceae (Bacillariophyceae) in the Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga, São Paulo, southeast Brazil, based on 28 samples. Four genera, 27 species and three varieties that are not the typical of their respective species were identified, from which nine are new registers for the State São Paulo [Nitzschia acicularis Hustedt, N. acidoclinata Lange-Bertalot, N. clausii Hantzsch, N. dissipata (Kützing) Rabenhorst, N. intermedia Hantzsch, N. palea (Kützing) W. Smith var. tenuirostris Grunow, N. subacicularis Hustedt, Tryblionella debilis Arnott ex O’Meara, and T. victoriae Grunow], and two are new records for the Brazilian territory [Grunowia solgensis (Cleve-Euler) Aboal and N. dissipata (Kützing) Rabenhorst var. borneensis Kützing]. Each identification was based on population samples, is presented by their morphological description and measurements, and is illustrated by photomicrographs.

The water and substrate samples (macrophytes and rocks) from lentic systems, streams and the hydrophytoterium were collected and subsequently were oxidized for analysis under light microscope. Nine species and one morphotype were identified from 15 diatom slides, of which four species are new records for Brazil (Brachysira cf. calcicola Lange-Bertalot, Brachysira frenguellii (Manguin) Lange-Bertalot & Moser, Brachysira huitotarum Vouilloud, Sala & Núñez-Avellaneda and Brachysira intermedia (Østrup) Lange-Bertalot). Brachysira subrostrata Lange-Bertalot was registered for the first time in the State of São Paulo

The Garças Reservoir history reveals a remarkable case of human impacts resulting from the urbanization pressure over the 20th century. It is a shallow tropical system located in the Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga, a protected area within the city of São Paulo, São Paulo State, Brazil. Based on a comprehensive dataset (1997-2017), we evaluated the water quality temporal change using a trophic state index (TSI); in addition, we also verified whether the management procedures improved the water quality. Mechanical removal of macrophytes (1999) triggered an abrupt change from eutrophic-supereutrophic to the hypereutrophic state with feedback mechanisms. After five years (2005), a slowdown in the internal P loading process occurred, followed by the installation of the secondary wastewater treatment in the city zoo two years later (2007). Both processes promoted the beginning of water quality improvement. In 2011, TSI first dropped to supereutrophic state with the temporary diversion of the sewage effluent from the São Paulo State Department of Agriculture. This effluent was finally inactivated (2014) and the system sustained the supereutrophic state. TSI responded well to the historical key events related to the control of sewage effluents. After 11 years from the permanent impact of macrophytes removal, current results have demonstrated improved health of the system. It is absolutely necessary to improve the sewage treatment from the city zoo to continue the reservoir recovery considering that since 2014 it has been the only external phosphorous loading to Garças Reservoir. The history of Garças Reservoir can offer a better understanding of wrong management strategies and the vulnerability of tropical shallow systems to eutrophication.

A história do Lago das Garças é um caso notável dos impactos humanos devidos à pressão da urbanização do século 20. Trata-se de uma represa tropical rasa localizada no Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga, área protegida situada na cidade de São Paulo, SP, Brasil. Com base em um banco de dados abrangente (1997-2017), nós avaliamos as alterações temporais da qualidade da água utilizando o índice de estado trófico (IET) e se as medidas adotadas de manejo melhoraram a qualidade da água. Em 1999, a remoção mecânica das macrófitas foi o gatilho para a mudança abrupta da represa do estado eutrófico-supereutrófico para hipertrófico, com mecanismos de retroalimentação. Após cinco anos (2005), ocorreu a desaceleração do aporte interno de P. Após dois anos (2007), houve a instalação da estação de tratamento secundário de esgoto na Fundação Parque Zoológico (2007). Ambos os eventos promoveram o início de uma melhora da qualidade da água. Em 2011, o IET passou para supereutrófico com a desativação temporária do efluente de esgotos provenientes da Secretaria de Agricultura e Abastecimento do Estado de São Paulo. Em 2014, este efluente foi totalmente desativado e o sistema manteve seu estado supereutrófico. Assim, o IET respondeu coerentemente aos eventos-chave relacionados com o controle dos efluentes de esgoto. Após 11 anos do impacto permanente da remoção das macrófitas, os resultados demonstraram a melhoria da qualidade da água da represa. Para prosseguir com a recuperação do Lago das Garças há necessidade absoluta de aperfeiçoar o sistema de tratamento secundário de esgoto proveniente do Zoológico, considerando que desde 2014 é o único efluente com aporte externo de fósforo para a represa. A história do Lago das Garças contribui para um melhor entendimento de estratégias errôneas de manejo e da vulnerabilidade de sistemas tropicais rasos à eutrofização.

The survey of the algal flora of the Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga (PEFI) started in 1962, with the disclosure of occurrence of 17 desmid species, collected from the São Paulo Botanical Gardens hydrophytoterium. However, in an organized way, it took place only 28 years later, in 1990, with the conception of the “Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga Cryptogamic flora”. The flora is essentially based on material gathered from the plankton, periphyton and surface sediments of the PEFI water bodies, and also included samples fromtrees barks, rocks, and soil. Forty-two fascicles of the algal flora have already been published, revealing 869 taxa including species, varieties and taxonomic formae. It is estimated that 95% of the local algal flora have already been surveyed and that its conclusion will be reached by the end of the year 2020.

O inventário florístico das algas do Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga (PEFI) foi iniciado em 1962, com a divulgação da ocorrência de 17 espécies de desmidiáceas, coletadas no hidrofitotério do Jardim Botânico de São Paulo. De modo organizado, entretanto, foi só 28 anos depois, em 1990, resultado da criação da “Flora Criptogâmica do Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga”. A flora está alicerçada em material coletado basicamente do plâncton, perifíton e de sedimentos superficiais de corpos d’água do Parque, mas também incluiu amostras coletadas de troncos de árvores, rochas e solo. Foram publicados até o momento 42 fascículos da flora, em que foram inventariados 869 táxons de algas, incluindo espécies, variedades e formas taxonômicas. Estima-se que 95% da flora de algas da área já tenha sido inventariada e conjectura-se sua conclusão para o final de 2020.

ABSTRACT Phytoplankton structure is influenced by environmental factors, seasonal cycles and the trophic state of the system. The objective of the present study was to identify guilds of phytoplankton species that are representative of seasonality and trophic status. We evaluated phytoplankton biomass and species composition in five tropical reservoirs, with different trophic states and during rainy and dry periods. At most of the sampling sites, total biomass was higher during the rainy season. Moreover, high cyanobacterial biomass was observed in all reservoirs except for one of the mesotrophic reservoirs, which had no significant contribution from the group. Phytoplankton guilds associated with the trophic gradient and seasonality were identified. Additionally, trophic status was determined to be the most important community structure factor. The results emphasize the importance of taxonomic identification when monitoring phytoplankton structure and autoecology. Furthermore, these aquatic organisms are highly sensitive to environmental variations, making them useful tools for evaluating and/or monitoring the ecological condition of aquatic ecosystems.

Resumo: Objetivo Mudanças estruturais no fitoplâncton foram avaliadas em três reservatórios em cascata, um ultraoligotrófico e dois oligotróficos, no verão e no inverno de 2014. Avaliou-se a variação da biomassa fitoplanctônica, a composição de espécies e os códons (grupos funcionais) ao longo de um perfil vertical e outro longitudinal. Métodos Foram selecionados quatro locais de amostragem na primeira represa em cascata (Cachoeira do França) e três em cada uma das demais duas (Cachoeira da Fumaça e Serraria). As amostras foram coletadas ao longo dos perfis vertical e longitudinal das represas. Foram determinados o biovolume das espécies e os códons que foram expressos em termos de biomassa. Resultados 18 códons foram identificados e associados às condições limnológicas dos reservatórios. A composição e a biomassa das espécies descritoras mudaram conforme as estações do ano. Códon B constituído principalmente por Discostella stelligera foi o mais frequente nas três represas e em ambos os períodos de amostragem. Conclusões Os resultados mostraram que a sazonalidade foi um fator importante para as mudanças na composição de espécies e dos códons do fitoplâncton. No entanto, o efeito da cascata sobre a estrutura do fitoplâncton foi demonstrado pela expressiva e constante contribuição de Ceratium furcoides (códon LM) no inverno e de Discostella stelligera (códon B) em ambos os períodos de amostragem nas três represas estudadas.

Abstract: Aim Structural changes in phytoplankton was evaluated in one ultraoligotrophic and two oligotrophic cascading reservoirs during two climatic periods (austral winter and summer) of 2014. Changes in phytoplankton biomass, species composition, and codons (functional groups) were evaluated along a vertical and a longitudinal profile. Methods Four sampling sites were selected for the first reservoir in the cascade (Cachoeira do França) and three for each of the other two reservoirs (Cachoeira da Fumaça and Serraria). Samples were collected along a vertical and a longitudinal profile. Species biomass and codons ‘sensu’ Reynolds were identified and expressed in terms of biomass. Results 18 codons were identified and associated to the reservoirs’ limnological conditions. Composition and biomass of descriptor species changed among seasons. Codon B consisting mainly of Discostella stelligera was the most frequent in all reservoirs in both climatic seasons. Conclusions Our findings showed that seasonality was the key factor for the species composition and phytoplankton codons changes. However, the cascade effect on phytoplankton structure was shown by the continuous contribution of Ceratium furcoides (codon LM) during the winter, and of Discostella stelligera (codon B) in both sampling periods in all three reservoirs.

RESUMO Foi realizado um levantamento florístico de Epithemia (Bacillariophyceae) na área do Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga (PEFI), São Paulo, SP, Brasil, com o objetivo de conhecer a diversidade taxonômica e a variabilidade morfológica do gênero. Ao total, 31 lâminas de diatomáceas foram examinadas das quais cinco foram usadas no presente estudo. Cinco espécies foram identificadas: E. proboscidea Kützing, E. gibba (Ehrenberg) Kützing, E. gibberula (Ehrenberg) Kützing, E. operculata (C. Agardh) Ruck & Nakov e Epithemia sp., com dominância de espécies perifíticas. Um táxon foi registrado pela primeira vez para o Brasil (E. proboscidea Kützing) e dois táxons para a área do PEFI (E. gibba (Ehrenberg) Kützing e E. operculata (C. Agardh) Ruck & Nakov).

ABSTRACT A survey of Epithemia (Bacillariophyceae) was carried out in the Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga (PEFI), São Paulo, SP, Brazil, in order to know the taxonomic diversity and the morphological variability of the genus. A total of 31 diatoms slides were analyzed of which five were used in this study. Five species were identified: E. proboscidea Kützing, E. gibba (Ehrenberg) Kützing, E. gibberula (Ehrenberg) Kützing, E. operculata (C. Agardh) Ruck & Nakov and Epithemia sp., with the dominance of periphytic species. One taxon was recorded for the first time in Brazil (E. proboscidea Kützing) and two taxa in the PEFI area (E. gibba (Ehrenberg) Kützing and E. operculata (C. Agardh) Ruck & Nakov).

ABSTRACT Knowledge of algal and cyanobacterial diversity of phytotelmata remains poorly-known, especially for bromeliads from different vegetation formations. We investigated the microalgae communities of four species of tank bromeliads from different vegetation formations in Bahia State, Northeast Brazil, highlighting the composition, richness and diversity of taxa. Sampling of water stored in bromeliads was carried out quarterly between 2014 and 2016, and abiotic variables and morphometric attributes of bromeliads were measured. A total of 89 taxa of algae and cyanobacteria were recorded for the four bromeliad species studied. The microalgae communities of the phytotelmata varied among vegetation formations, with one tank bromeliad, Alcantarea nahoumii, with more complex architecture (higher number of leaves and thus more cavities), being distinguished by its high species richness (73 taxa). The bromeliads exhibited little similarity in species composition, with only one species (Phacus polytrophos) occurring in all four species. Throughout the entire sampling period, classes with higher species richness, especially due to A. nahoumii, were Zygnematophyceae, Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae, which accounted for about 80 % of all species inventoried. Our results contribute to the knowledge of microalga communities of bromeliad phytotelmata in Brazil with regard to species richness and composition, as well as significant environmental characteristics.
