ABSTRACT Studies on the adaptability of raspberry cultivars to subtropical regions are needed since growth, yield, and fruit quality may differ from levels observed in temperate climates. This study evaluated the phenology, yield, physical-chemical attributes, and bioactive compounds of raspberries produced in a subtropical region of Brazil under an organic cropping system. The experiment was carried out in three production cycles 2018/2019, 2019/2020, and 2020/2021 in Pinhais, Paraná State, Brazil. We evaluated ten raspberry cultivars, eight primocanes (Alemãzinha, Autumn Bliss, Bababerry, Fallgold, Golden Bliss, Heritage, Indian Summer and Polana), and two floricane cultivars (Schoenmann and Willamette). Phenological evaluations were carried out weekly at the beginning and end of flowering and harvesting. The soluble solids content, titratable acidity, the pH, and bioactive compounds were analyzed. Primocane cultivars showed two flowering and fruiting periods, the first in spring/summer and the other in summer/autumn, except for the Indian Summer cultivar, which showed a floricane-fruiting behavior, bearing fruit only on one-year-old canes, like Schoenmann and Willamette cultivars. ‘Alemãzinha’ shows better adaptation to the region under study with higher yield and concentration of total polyphenols, but its fruits are small and acidic. ‘Heritage’ is also an option for cultivation in this region, even though it is less productive, as the fruits are larger, less acidic, and have high levels of bioactive compounds. Yellow cultivars Fallgold and Golden Bliss are good options for diversifying the color offer, with yields similar to ‘Heritage’ and with a high total soluble solids/titratable acidity ratio.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar alterações fisiológicas e bioquímicas em gemas de caquizeiro ‘Fuyu’ durante a dormência. Ramos foram coletados entre março e agosto de 2015. A dormência foi avaliada pelo teste biológico de estacas de nós isolados, a 25 °C e fotoperíodo de 16 h. As variáveis analisadas foram umidade ponderal, teor de açúcares solúveis, atividade respiratória, atividade das enzimas superóxido dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbato peroxidase (APX), guaiacol peroxidase (POD) e polifenoloxidase (PPO), teor de peróxido de hidrogênio (H2O2) e peroxidação lipídica. No final de março de 2015 as plantas já estavam dormentes, as folhas e frutos presentes indicam efeito de paradormência. A indução da endodormência pode ter ocorrido em junho de 2015, quando iniciou acúmulo de horas de frio (HF) abaixo de 7,2 °C e maiores HF abaixo de 12 °C, que coincidiu com o período que houve diminuição da umidade e da atividade respiratória, aumento dos açúcares redutores, diminuição da atividade da SOD, CAT, APX e PPO e aumento de H2O2. Após acúmulo de 553 HF abaixo de 12 °C, a capacidade de brotação aumentou e as gemas apresentaram aumento da umidade, diminuição do teor de açúcares redutores, aumento da atividade respiratória, baixa atividade da SOD, CAT, APX e POD e elevados teores de H2O2.

ABSTRACT: This study identified physiological and biochemical changes in ‘Fuyu’ persimmon buds during dormancy. Branches were collected between March and August 2015. Dormancy was evaluated by biological testing of isolated node cuttings at 25 °C and a photoperiod of 16 h. The variables analyzed were water content; reducing sugar content; respiratory activity; activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), guaiacol peroxidase (POD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) enzymes; hydrogen peroxide content (H2O2) and lipid peroxidation. At the end of March 2015, the plants were already dormant, and the leaves and fruits present indicated a paradormancy effect. Induction of endodormancy may have occurred in June 2015, when chilling hours (CH) below 7.2 °C and higher CH below 12 °C began to accumulate, which coincided with the period in which there was a decrease in water content and respiratory activity, an increase in reducing sugars, a decrease in SOD, CAT, APX and PPO and an increase in H2O2. After an accumulation of 553 CH below 12 °C, the budburst capacity increased, and the buds presented increased water content, decreased reducing sugars content, increased respiratory activity, low activity in SOD, CAT, APX and POD and high levels of H2O2.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effective temperature for overcoming the dormancy of ‘Fuyu’ persimmon tree buds. Stem samples were collected three times between 2013 and 2014. Stems were maintained in a climate incubator chamber at 3, 6, 9, and 12 °C. For each temperature, five numbers of additional chilling hours (CH) (0, 240, 384, 528, and 672 CH) were studied. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 5 × 4 factorial design (chilling hours × temperatures) with four replications with 10 cuttings. The maintenance of branches at cold temperatures from 3 to 12 °C intensified endodormancy of the buds when the plants were at the beginning of endodormancy. The most effective temperatures for overcome dormancy when the buds were in transition from paradormancy to endodormancy were from 3 to 6 °C. When the buds were already in endodormancy, temperatures of 3, 6, 9, and 12 °C were effective for the accumulation of cold and overcoming dormancy. The increase in the number of chilling hours from 3 to 12 °C induced budburst and the temperature of 12 °C was able to slowly induce and overcome bud dormancy.

Abstract Blueberry is an important fruit crop, with many health benefits. Despite its importance, much remains to be studied concerning the dormancy dynamics in rabbiteye cultivars growing in a mild winter climate. In this research, the dormancy in blueberry, rabbiteye cultivars ‘Bluegem’, ‘Climax’, ‘Delite’, and ‘Powderblue’, was studied in a mild winter region. The single-node cuttings biological test and the evaluation of the hydric status were performed in dormant winter reproductive buds. These experiments were performed during fall and winter in one year (2016). Moreover, chilling hours under or equal to 7.2 ºC were measured, and chill units were calculated according to Utah Model [1], Modified Utah Model [2], and Blueberry Model [3]. In conclusion, the four cultivars showed a similar pattern, revealing a dormant state in the initial sampling dates and a released dormancy in the final treatments, showing the decrease of dormancy in June and July. However, Delite was earlier than the other cultivars. Bluegem and Delite required 134.0 chilling hours, 127.0 chill units (Utah Model), 198.5 chill units (Modified Utah Model), and 971.5 chill units (Blueberry Model) for 50% of their green tip buds reach the opened bud stage. Climax required 44.0, -11.0, 56.5, and 440.5, respectively. And Powderblue required 44.0, 5.5, 77.0, and 725.0 respectively. This study can bring some insights into crop management and production of this important fruit crop, especially in a global climate-changing scenario, related to flowering and dormancy control, as well as helping to select suitable cultivars to a region, concerning chilling requirements.

RESUMO Na micropropagação de plantas, a etapa de estabelecimento é dificultada pela presença de micro-organismos em tecidos oriundos de matrizes do campo, especialmente para bambu. Objetivou-se estabelecer um protocolo eficiente de assepsia de explantes de Bambusa oldhamii oriundos de plantas em campo e efetuar a identificação molecular de um possível isolado bacteriano endofítico. Os explantes foram expostos subsequentemente a álcool 70 %, hipoclorito de sódio 1 % (NaOCl), cloreto de mercúrio 0,1 % (HgCl2), tiofanato-metílico (Cercobin®) e digliconato de clorexidina (Riohex® 2 %), em diferentes combinações, e introduzidos em meio Murashige and Skoog (sólido ou líquido), acrescido ou não de 4 mL L-1 de Plant Preservative Mixture (PPMTM), em sete tratamentos. A assepsia e imersão dos explantes no meio de cultura líquido contendo 4 mL L-1 de PPMTM inibiram visualmente o crescimento de bactérias e fungos, permitiram o desenvolvimento de brotações com comprimento médio de 2,2 cm e posteriores subcultivos, sendo o melhor tratamento usado para o estabelecimento in vitro de B. oldhamii. A identificação molecular da bactéria por meio do sequenciamento do 16S rDNA permitiu identificar o isolado bacteriano como Ralstonia sp., com 100 % de similaridade, e as análises filogenéticas o agruparam com Ralstonia pickettii. Além disso, a bactéria se mostrou sensível a 4 mL L-1 de PPMTM pelo teste de concentração mínima inibitória.

ABSTRACT In plant micropropagation, the establishment stage is difficult, due to the presence of microorganisms in tissues from field-grown matrices, especially for bamboo. This study aimed to establish an efficient asepsis protocol for Bambusa oldhamii explants from field plants, as well as to carry out the molecular identification of a possible endophytic bacterial isolate. The explants were exposed to 70 % alcohol, 1 % sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), 0.1 % mercuric chloride (HgCl2), thiophanate-methyl (Cercobin®) and chlorhexidine digluconate (2 % Riohex®) in different combinations, and introduced into Murashige and Skoog culture medium (solid or liquid), supplemented or not with 4 mL L-1 of Plant Preservative Mixture (PPMTM), totaling seven treatments. The asepsis and immersion of the explants in the liquid culture medium containing 4 mL L-1 of PPMTM visually inhibited the bacterial and fungal growth, allowed the development of shoots with a mean length of 2.2 cm and posterior subcultures, being the best treatment used for the in vitro establishment of B. oldhamii. The molecular identification of an endophytic bacterium performed by 16S rDNA sequencing allowed to identify the bacterial isolate as Ralstonia sp., with 100 % of similarity, and the phylogenetic analysis grouped it with Ralstonia pickettii. In addition, the bacterial isolate showed to be sensitive to 4 mL L-1 of PPMTM by the minimum inhibitory concentration test.

Resumo Com a finalidade de analisar a patogenicidade e o antagonismo entre porta-enxertos de videiras e microrganismos de solo, procedeu-se à seleção de bactérias promotoras de crescimento de plantas com efeito antibiótico ao fitopatógeno Ilyonectria liriodendri, isolado monospórico 2T-VSC-101, em testes de antibiose in vitro. O acesso bacteriano que produziu a maior zona de inibição foi utilizado na biotização de mudas dos porta-enxertos de videira P1103, IBBT481 e VR039-16. Da interação entre isolados de bactérias promotoras de crescimento de plantas e o fungo causador da doença pé-preto-da-videira, resultaram três isolados bacterianos com controle sobre o crescimento micelial do fitopatógeno, todos do gênero sp. BurkholderiaEntretanto, a bactéria de maior controle, Burkholderia catarinensis sp. nov. isolado POA 89, mostrou-se prejudicial ao desenvolvimento in vitro dos porta-enxertos, causando-lhes a morte. O cultivo com meio de cultura modificado com pedrisco mostrou-se adequado ao crescimento in vitro dos porta-enxertos e apropriado à observação dos sintomas característicos da doença pé-preto. Das culturas ex vitro com o porta-enxerto IBBT481 e os microrganismos, resultaram efeitos favoráveis às plantas inoculadas com a bactéria em combinação com o fitopatógeno. Também demonstrou a dificuldade de aclimatização e de crescimento desse acesso em casa de vegetação.

Abstract In order to analyze the pathogenicity and antagonism between grapevine rootstocks and soil microorganisms, plant growth-promoting bacteria with antibiotic effect were selected from the phytopathogen Ilyonectria liriodendri, 2T-VSC-101 isolated monosporic, in in vitro antibiosis tests. The bacterial access that produced the largest zone of inhibition was used in the seedling biotization of the grapevine rootstocks P1103, IBBT481 and VR039-16. From the interaction between isolates of plant growth-promoting bacteria and Ilyonectria liriodendri isolate resulted in three bacterial isolates with control of the mycelial growth of the phytopathogen, all of the Burkholderia gender.However, the highest control bacterium, Burkholderia catarinensis sp.nov. isolated POA 89, was found to be detrimental to the in vitro development of rootstocks, causing them to die. The cultivation through culture medium modified with sand was adequate for the in vitro growth of the rootstocks and appropriate for the observation of the black foot disease’s characteristic symptoms. From the ex vitro cultures with the IBBT481 rootstock and the microorganisms, there were results in favorable effects to the plants inoculated with the bacterium in combination with the phytopathogen. It also demonstrated the difficulty of acclimatization and growth of this access in a greenhouse.

Abstract Stevia (stevia rebaudiana Bertoni) is a species characterized by producing non-caloric substances with high sweetening potential. Among these substances, rebaudioside A and stevioside are produced in greater quantity. Plant density and harvesting time are factors that affects biomass and sweetening compounds yield in this species. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of plant densities and harvesting times on the productive and physiological characteristics of stevia in southern Brazil. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, in a split-plot scheme, with 9 treatments comparing the effect of three planting densities (166 667, 83 333 and 33 333 plants ha-1) in the plots and three harvesting periods (before, in the beginning and in full flowering) in the subplots. Harvesting at the beginning of flowering promoted higher dry leaf biomass yield and, when associated with the lowest planting density, promoted higher levels of rebaudioside A and stevioside. The lowest planting density resulted in greater leaves biomass accumulation, whereas the highest density promoted higher yields per area. Interaction between density of 166 667 plants ha-1 and the harvest at the onset of flowering promoted higher yields of rebaudioside A (43.22 kg ha-1) as well as higher rebaudioside A/stevioside ratio (0.60).

RESUMO O mecanismo fisiológico da dormência de gemas de espécies frutíferas temperadas ainda não foi totalmente esclarecido, sendo esse conhecimento importante para se entender melhor o comportamento das plantas em diferentes climas. Este experimento teve por objetivo caracterizar a dinâmica de brotação de gemas de videira cv. Bordô, por meio do teste biológico de nós isolados e do teste do tetrazólio. O experimento foi realizado com a coleta quinzenal de ramos de videira, nos meses de maio e agosto, nos anos de 2013 e 2014, em parreiral localizado em Pinhais, PR. Com os ramos coletados, instalaram-se o teste biológico (para obtenção do tempo médio de brotação, da taxa final de brotação, da taxa de brotações vigorosas e da velocidade de brotação) e o teste do tetrazólio (para verificar a taxa respiratória de gemas). Foram analisados o teor de umidade e a umidade ponderal das gemas. Os resultados foram significativos para todos os parâmetros, exceto para a taxa de brotações vigorosas. Concluiu-se que a endodormência de gemas do cv. Bordô é mais intensa durante o mês de maio e que o teste do tetrazólio apresenta alta correlação com os dados do teste biológico, mostrando ser um bom método para a análise da dormência de fruteiras de clima temperado. O teor de umidade também variou conforme a atividade respiratória, sendo maior em épocas de maior atividade metabólica.

ABSTRACT The dormancy of temperate fruit trees is still not totally clarified, and this knowledge is important to better understand the plant behavior in different climates. The objective of this experiment was to characterize the dynamics of ’Bordo’ grapevine budding through biological and tetrazolium tests. Branches of grapevine were collected biweekly from a vineyard located in Pinhais-PR, in May and August of 2013 and 2014. The collected branches were used to install the biological (to obtain the average bud break time, final bud break rate, vigorous buds rate, and velocity of bud break) and the tetrazolium (to verify buds respiratory rate) tests and analyze the moisture and the water contents of the buds. The results were significant in all the parameters evaluated, except for vigorous bud rate. The endodormancy is more intense in May, and the tetrazolium test has a high correlation with biological test data, which shows that tetrazolium test is an alternative for dormancy analysis of temperate fruit trees. The moisture content also varied according to respiratory rate, being higher when the metabolic activity is higher.

Resumo Objetivou-se avaliar o período de florescimento e as características físicas e químicas de frutos de pessegueiro, visando a encontrar aqueles mais promissores para a diversificação da persicultura na região metropolitana de Curitiba. Foram avaliados 8 seleções e três cultivares em Porto Amazonas e 10 cultivares em Araucária, quanto ao período de florescimento, frutificação efetiva, diâmetro e altura dos frutos, massa média de frutos, coloração da epiderme, sólidos solúveis (SS), acidez titulável (AT), relação SS/AT, potencial hidrogeniônico (pH). O período de floração ocorreu entre o final de junho e o final de setembro, com variação de 16 a 25 dias. A taxa de frutificação efetiva foi maior que 50% para ‘Cascata 1513’, ‘Cascata 1429’, ‘Cascata 1577’, ‘Cascata 1743 e para todas as cultivares avaliadas em Araucária. Verificaram-se diferenças significativas para as demais variáveis avaliadas. Concluiu-se que em Araucária ‘Charme’ e ‘Chimarrita’ continuam sendo boas opções de plantio na região, têm a mesma duração do ciclo (111 dias), sendo ‘Charme’ um pouco mais tardio. Além desses, ‘Douradão’ e ‘Rubimel’ apresentaram bom tamanho de fruto, melhor balanço entre sólidos solúveis e acidez moderada e são mais precoces que as anteriores. ‘PS 25399’ é o cultivar mais precoce entre todas as avaliadas e apresenta epiderme avermelhada de grande interesse do consumidor. Em Porto Amazonas, as seleções e cultivares testadas produziram poucos frutos e de tamanho pequeno, sendo necessário mais estudo para recomendação nesta área.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the flowering period and the physicochemical characteristics of peaches, aiming to find those most promising for the diversification of the peach crop in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, Paraná State. We evaluated 8 selections and three cultivars in Porto Amazonas and 10 cultivars in Araucaria for flowering period, fruit set, diameter and height of fruit, average fruit weight, the skin color, soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA), ratio SS/ TA, hydrogen potential (pH). The flowering period occurred between late June and late September ranging from 16 to 25 days. The fruit set rate was greater than 50% for ‘Cascata 1513’, ‘Cascata 1429’, ‘Cascata 1577’, ‘Cascata 1743’ and for all cultivars in Araucaria. There were significant differences for the other variables assessed. It was concluded that in Araucária, ‘Charme’ and ‘Chimarrita’ are good planting options, have the same duration of the cycle (111 days), being ‘Charme’ a little later. Besides these, ‘Douradão’ and ‘Rubimel’ have good fruit size, moderate acidity and best SS/TA ratio, being earlier than the previous ones. ‘PS 25399’ is the earliest and showed reddish epidermis and great consumer interest. In Porto Amazonas, selections and cultivars tested produced little fruit of small size, being required more studies to be recommended in these area.

Resumo Para a recomendação de novas cultivares, são necessários estudos quanto à adaptação no local de cultivo. Logo, objetivou-se avaliar o desenvolvimento fenológico, a produtividade e a qualidade de frutos de oito cultivares de mirtileiro do grupo rabbiteye (Aliceblue, Bluebelle, Bluegem, Briteblue, Climax, Delite, Powderblue e Woodard) e duas do grupo highbush (Georgiagem e O’Neal) em condições de clima subtropical úmido, nos ciclos de 2012/2013, 2013/2014 e 2014/2015. Foram avaliadas as datas do início e do final de floração, início e final de colheita, frutificação efetiva, produção, massa, diâmetro, pH, teor de sólidos solúveis, acidez titulável, ratio e coloração. As cultivares avaliadas apresentaram floração no período de julho a setembro, concentrando a colheita nos meses de novembro e dezembro. As maiores frutificações efetivas foram observadas nas cultivares Delite, Climax, Briteblue e Powderblue. Houve diferenças entre as cultivares quanto à massa do fruto, tamanho, pH, teor de sólidos solúveis e acidez. Os resultados demonstraram que as cultivares exibiram coloração azul, com poucas variações ao longo dos anos de avaliação. As cultivares com melhor desempenho produtivo, em condições de clima subtropical úmido, são Bluegem, Delite, Climax e Powderblue.

Abstract Studies on adaptation to the cultivation site are necessary for the recommendation of new cultivars. The aim of this study was to evaluate the phenological development, productivity and fruit quality of eight blueberry cultivars from the rabbiteye group (Aliceblue, Bluebelle, Bluegem, Briteblue, Climax, Delite, Powderblue and Woodard) and two from the highbush group (Georgiagem and O’Neal) under humid subtropical conditions in the 2012/2013, 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 cycles. Beginning and end of flowering, beginning and end of harvesting, fruit set, production, mass, diameter, pH, content of soluble solids, titratable acidity, ratio and coloring were evaluated. The evaluated cultivars presented flowering in the period from July to September, concentrating harvest in the months of November and December. The highest fruit set was observed in Delite, Climax, Briteblue and Powderblue cultivars. There were differences among cultivars regarding fruit mass, size, pH, content of soluble solids and acidity. The results showed that the cultivars exhibited blue color with few variations over the evaluation years. Cultivars with the best productive performance under humid subtropical climate conditions are Bluegem, Delite, Climax and Powderblue.

RESUMO: A avaliação do desempenho produtivo é importante para encontrar as cultivares de mirtileiro mais adaptadas à uma determinada região. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o período de floração e de colheita, a produção por planta e a qualidade de frutos de oito cultivares de mirtileiro do grupo rabbiteye (Aliceblue, Bluebelle, Bluegem, Briteblue, Climax, Delite, Powderblue e Woodard) e duas do grupo highbush (Georgiagem e O’Neal) em condição de inverno ameno em Pinhais-PR. Foram avaliadas as datas de início e final de floração, início e final de colheita, produção por planta, massa, tamanho de fruto, pH, teor de sólidos solúveis, acidez titulável, ratio e coloração nos ciclos produtivos de 2013/2014 e 2014/2015, quando as plantas possuíam dois e três anos, respectivamente.As cultivares estudadas apresentaram floração nos meses de agosto e setembro, concentrando a colheita nos meses de novembro e dezembro. Houve diferenças entre as cultivares quanto a massa do fruto, tamanho, pH, teor de sólidos solúveis e a acidez. O ratio médio de 14,97 e 13,39 obtido em cada safra provou que as cultivares tem boa qualidade de frutos. A coloração dos frutos apresentou poucas variações nos dois anos avaliados. O mirtilo das cultivares avaliadas apresentou características de coloração e atributos físicos e químicos de qualidade compatível com o mirtilo de outras regiões tradicionalmente produtoras. Em região com inverno ameno, plantas jovens das cultivares Climax, Delite, Bluegem e Powderblue, do grupo rabbiteye, são as mais produtivas, enquanto as cultivares do grupo highbush produzem poucos frutos.

ABSTRACT: Evaluation of yield performance is important to find the most adapted blueberry cultivars in a particular region. This research aimed to evaluate the flowering and hasvesting periods, the production per plant, and fruit quality of eight rabbiteye blueberry cultivars (Aliceblue, Bluebelle, Bluegem, Briteblue, Climax, Delite, Powderblue, and Woodard) and two highbush blueberries (Georgiagem and O’Neal), in mild winter conditions in Pinhais-PR. Flowering and harvesting periods, production, berry weight, size, pH, soluble solids, titratable acidity, ratio and color of the fruits were evaluated in the 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 growing seasons, when the plants had two and three years old, respectively. Cultivars flowered from August to September, and harvest was concentrated in November and December. Berry weight, size, pH, soluble solids and acidity varied among the cultivars. The average ratios of 14.97 and 13.39 for each crop proved that the cultivars have good fruit quality. There was little variation in fruit color in the two years evaluated. Blueberry cultivars showed the staining characteristics and physical and chemical attributes of quality compatible to blueberry from other traditional regions. Under mild winter conditions, young plants of rabbiteye blueberry cultivars, Climax, Delite, Bluegem and Powderblue, are the most productive, while the highbusch cultivars bear few fruits.

Araucaria angustifolia apresenta redução da taxa de crescimento durante o ano, podendo ser resposta às condições ambientais desfavoráveis, como ocorre nas fruteiras de clima temperado, que apresentam dormência de gemas como forma de sobrevivência. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a dinâmica da atividade respiratória de meristemas apicais de ramos plagiotrópicos de Araucaria angustifolia. Foram coletadas amostras de 0,4 g de brotações terminais de ramos plagiotrópicos de plantas jovens e adultas, as quais foram mantidas em 5 mL de solução de cloreto de 2,3,5 trifeniltetrazólio (1,2%) em sala de crescimento a 25°C. Em seguida, foram mantidas em 4 mL de álcool etílico absoluto para leitura por espectrofotometria da absorbância a 560 nm. A atividade respiratória de meristemas apicais de ramos plagiotrópicos de Araucaria angustifolia é variável durante o ano. A maior atividade respiratória ocorre na metade da primavera e a menor atividade respiratória ocorre no inverno, em plantas jovens e adultas. Plantas adultas permanecem em alta atividade respiratória por um período maior, até o início do verão.

Araucaria angustifolia decreases its growth ratio during the fall and winter in response to adverse environmental conditions such as in temperate fruits where bud dormancy as a survival startegy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the dynamics of the respiratory activity of apical meristems of plagiotropic branches of Araucaria angustifolia. To determine the respiratory activity, samples with 0.4 g of apical buds of plagiotropic branches of young and adult plants were collected. These buds were maintained during two hours in 5 mL of 2,3,5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (1.2%) in a growth room at 25 °C. Then, it was maintained during one hour in 4 mL of absolute ethyl alcohol and then the absorbance was determined by reading in spectrophotometer at 560 nm. The respiratory activity of apical meristems of plagiotropic branches of Araucaria angustifolia changed during the year, reducing in mid-spring and become lower in the winter in both young and adult plants. Adult plants remained with lower respiratory activity for a longer period, until the beginning of summer.

RESUMO A amoreira-preta tem potencial para ser cultivada em climas subtropicais, sendo necessários para isso estudos fenológicos para a indicação de cultivares adaptadas para estas regiões. Assim, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o comportamento fenológico de quatro cultivares de amoreira-preta, bem como determinar a qualidade de seus frutos produzidos em Cerro Azul-PR, com foco na recomendação de cultivares mais adaptadas à região. O maior ciclo produtivo observado e as melhores produções e produtividades foram obtidos para a cultivar Guarani, e frutos maiores foram apresentados pela cultivar Tupy. Porém nenhuma cultivar atingiu a produtividade esperada nos primeiros dois ciclos produtivos. A melhor relação entre acidez titulável e sólidos solúveis foi apresentada pela cultivar Cherokee.

ABSTRACT Blackberry has the potential to be grown in subtropical climates, requiring phenological studies for the indication of cultivars adapted to this type of climate. Thus, the aim of this work was to evaluate the phenological behavior of four blackberry cultivars, as well as to determine the physical and chemical characteristics of fruits produced in mesothermal subtropical climate (Cfa), with more focus on the recommendation of cultivars adapted to this region. The largest production cycle and the best productions and yields were obtained for Guarani cultivar and larger fruits were presented by Tupy cultivar. The best relationship between titratable acidity and soluble solids was presented by Cherokee cultivar.

O objetivo da pesquisa foi avaliar a dinâmica da dormência de gemas de macieira 'Imperial Gala' e de pereira 'Hosui' em região de baixa ocorrência de frio. Os experimentos foram realizados no período de abril a agosto dos anos de 2007 e 2008 com coletas de ramos a cada duas semanas no município de Porto Amazonas, Paraná, Brasil. Na última coleta, um grupo adicional de ramos foi coletado e mantido em refrigerador a temperatura de 4 a 7°C por 1.440h. A avaliação da dormência foi realizada pelo teste biológico de estacas de nós isolados em câmaras de crescimento (BOD) a 25°C e fotoperíodo de 16h. Foram quantificadas horas de frio (HF) e unidades de frio (UF) ocorridas na região. As duas espécies foram avaliadas como experimentos distintos. O delineamento experimental adotado foi o completamente casualizado com 11 tratamentos e quatro repetições para cada espécie. A endodormência mais intensa de gemas de macieira 'Imperial Gala' ocorreu no início de junho em 2007 e da metade de junho ao início de julho em 2008. A endodormência de gemas de pereira 'Hosui' apresentou oscilações entre abril e agosto de 2007 e foi mais intensa de junho ao início de julho em 2008.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the dormancy dynamic of Imperial Gala apple tree buds and Hosui pear tree buds in a region of low chill occurrence. Experiments were conducted between April and August in 2007 and 2008. Branches were collected every two weeks from an orchard at Porto Amazonas (Paraná State, Brazil). On the last sampling day, an additional set of branches was collected and refrigerated between 4°C and 7°C for 1,440 hours. Dormancy was evaluated using a biological test of single node cuttings isolated in growth chambers (GC) at 25°C with 16 hours of light exposure. The number of chill hours (CH) and chill units (CU) for the region were recorded. The two species were evaluated in separate experiments. We used 11 completely randomized treatments with four replicas for each species. The peak of endodormancy for the Imperial Gala apple tree buds occurred in early June 2007 and from middle June to early July in 2008. The endodormancy of the Hosui pear tree buds oscillated between April and August in 2007 and peaked between June and early July in 2008.

Dez cultivares de videira foram genotipadas com oito locos microssatélites a fim de confirmar a sua identidade e caracterizar sua diversidade genética. Destas, o perfil de nove cultivares foram idênticos aos da base de dados e o de 'Magoon' foi idêntico a 'Regale' deste estudo e de 'Regale' da base de dados da Universidade da Califórnia (Davis), indicando um provável erro de plantio. O número de alelos variou de 5 (VVM5) a 9 (VVMD31). A heterozigosidade observada variou de 37,14 (VVMD5) a 97,14% (VVMD27), sem diferenças significativas em relação aos valores esperados para todos os locos, exceto para VVMD5. Os valores de conteúdo de informação polimórfica (PIC) foram superiores a 0,25 em mais de 85% dos locos analisados, sendo que VVMD31 apresentou-se como o mais informativo. Por meio da análise de agrupamento UPGMA foi possível separar as cultivares em 2 grupos distintos. Dentro de cada grupo, as cultivares mais divergentes foram 'Bountiful' (V. rotundifolia) e 'Goethe' (V. labrusca), que também apresentaram o maior número de alelos privados, 4 e 7, respectivamente. Quando comparados os dois grupos, as cultivares mais divergentes foram 'Bountiful' e 'Bordo', com a maior distância de Nei. Foi evidenciado que há variabilidade genética suficiente nas cultivares utilizadas neste estudo para subsidiar programas de melhoramento genético.

Ten grapevine cultivars were genotyped at eight microsatellite loci to characterize their identity and genetic diversity. Of these, nine cultivar profiles matched with those of databases and 'Magoon' matched with 'Regale' in the present study and 'Regale' in the University of California (Davis) database, implicating a likely error in planting. The number of alleles ranged from 5 (VVM5) to 9 (VVMD31), and the observed heterozygosity ranged from 37.14 (VVMD5) to 97.14% (VVMD27), with no significant differences in relation to the expected values for any of the loci, with the exception of VVMD5. The polymorphism information content values were observed to be above 0.25 in more than 85% of the loci analyzed, and VVMD31 was the most informative. The UPGMA analysis clustered the cultivars into two distinct groups. Within each group, the most divergent cultivars were 'Bountiful' (V. rotundifolia) and 'Goethe' (V. labrusca), also exhibiting the largest number of private alleles, 4 and 7, respectively. When comparing the two groups, the most divergent accessions were 'Bountiful' and 'Bordo', with the highest Nei distance. It was demonstrated that there is sufficient genetic variability in the cultivars used in this study to support breeding programs.
