Although liquid consonants have been described as complex segments because they involve the simultaneous production of double articulatory gestures, tip and dorse, and are commonly involved in phonological simplification processes, there are contrary arguments in this regard, and there is no consensus in the literature. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the correct productions of alveolar liquids and the simplification processes (semivocalization and substitution) of /ɾ/ of Brazilian Portuguese in 30 children aged 4 to 9 years from an ultrasound analysis of the tongue. The correct productions were described as having double gestures (tip and dorse) for both phonemes, with higher tip and more anterior dorse for [ɾ] compared to [l]. Apesar de as consoantes líquidas virem sendo descritas como segmentos complexos por envolverem a produção concomitante de duplos gestos articulatórios, ponta e dorso, e estarem comumente envolvidas nos processos fonológicos de simplificação, há argumentos contrários a esse respeito, não havendo um consenso na literatura. Deste modo, este estudo objetivou descrever as produções corretas das líquidas alveolares e os processos de simplificação (semivocalização e substituição) de /ɾ/ do português brasileiro em 30 crianças de 4 a 9 anos a partir de uma análise ultrassonográfica de língua. RESUMO Este estudo caracterizou as medidas de deslocamento e duração da língua no desvio fonológico na produção típica de crianças falantes do português brasileiro. As hipóteses são: (1) crianças com desvio fonológico caracterizam-se por uma duração maior que as crianças típicas; e (2) o deslocamento da língua é maior no desvio fonológico e nas produções típicas das crianças. Participaram cinco crianças com desvio fonológico e cinco com desenvolvimento típico de linguagem. O corpus consistiu em palavras contendo dois padrões silábicos: CCV e CV. As imagens foram capturadas simultaneamente pelo software Articulate Assistant Advanced (AAA). A hipótese 1 não foi confirmada e a 2 foi parcialmente confirmada. A duração é maior nas sílabas CCV. O deslocamento médio e posterior da língua é maior no desvio fonológico. As crianças com desvio fonológico parecem não coordenar os gestos da ponta da língua durante a produção de CCV (esperado para a produção do tepe), entretanto deslocam a região média e a região posterior da língua.

ABSTRACT This study characterized tongue displacement and duration measures in phonological disorder and typical children´s productions of Brazilian Portuguese speakers. The hypotheses are: (1) children with phonological disorder are characterized by longer duration than typical children; and (2) tongue displacement is greater in phonological disorder and typical children´s productions. Participants were five children diagnosed with phonological disorders (PD) and five typically developed (TD). The corpus consisted of three repetitions with two syllable patterns: CCV and CV. The images were captured simultaneously by the Articulate Assistant Advanced software. The hypothesis 1 was not confirmed and hypothesis 2 was partially confirmed. The durational measures demonstrated that the CCV syllables were significantly longer than the CV syllables in TD. The posterior and average tongue displacement is greater in phonological disorder. The children with phonological disorders do not seem to coordinate gestures of the tongue tip and dorsum during CCV production separately (expected for the production of tap), however they displaced the average and posterior region of the tongue.

RESUMO Este trabalho apresenta uma caracterização acústica do foco prosódico na fala de crianças com transtorno fonológico a fim de identificar quais pistas fonético-acústicas marcariam a produção do foco prosódico na fala desse grupo de sujeitos. Os dados analisados foram obtidos em sessões de avaliação fonoaudiológica a partir de tarefa de repetição de sentenças com elementos focalizados. Duração, intensidade e tipo de acento tonal no elemento focalizado foram as pistas submetidas à análise. Os resultados mostraram que a focalização prosódica na fala de crianças com transtorno fonológico é marcada por aumento da duração e por aumento da intensidade, mas não é marcada pelo acento tonal característico da marcação de foco prosódico. Esses resultados são discutidos à luz da combinação de pistas fonéticas responsáveis pela caracterização da produção do foco prosódico e de suas implicações clínicas. O estudo apresenta contribuições tanto para os estudos linguísticos quanto para os estudos clínicos com ênfase em aquisição de linguagem.

ABSTRACT This paper presents an acoustic description of prosodic focus marking in speech of children with phonological disorder to identify which phonetic cues can be seen as markers of contrastive focus. The data was obtained in speech evaluation sessions through a task of repeating focus marking sentences. Duration, intensity and intonation on focused words were the phonetic cues under analysis. Results show that prosodic focus marking in speech of children with phonological disorder is characterized by increased duration and intensity, but is not characterized by the use of contrastive focus marking nuclear accent. These results are discussed considering, on one hand, the combination of phonetic cues relevant for characterizing the production of contrastive focus and, on the other hand, its clinical implications. We present contributions for both linguistic and clinical studies in language acquisition.

RESUMO Objetivo Comparar o desempenho perceptivo-auditivo de crianças com e sem transtorno fonológico (TF) na tarefa de identificação dos contrastes entre os fonemas oclusivos. Método Foram selecionadas, de um banco de dados, informações referentes ao desempenho perceptivo-auditivo de 46 crianças (23 com diagnóstico de TF com acometimento nas oclusivas (G1) e 23 com desenvolvimento típico de fala (G2)), entre quatro e oito anos de idade, em uma tarefa de identificação na classe das consoantes oclusivas do Português Brasileiro, a partir do instrumento de avaliação de percepção de fala (PERCEFAL). O tempo de reação, os números de erros e acertos, bem como o padrão de erro perceptual foram considerados na análise. Resultados Com relação à acurácia perceptivo-auditiva o Test-T mostrou uma diferença estatisticamente significante, em que as crianças típicas tiveram uma média de acerto maior do que as crianças com TF e um tempo de reação menor para os acertos. No tocante ao padrão de erro a ANOVA de medidas repetidas mostrou um efeito significativo para o grupo e padrão de erro, mas não para a interação entre grupo e padrão de erro. O teste Post Hoc de Tukey mostrou para ambos os grupos que os erros envolvendo ponto articulatório foram superiores aos erros de vozeamento e vozeamento + ponto articulatório. Conclusão crianças com transtorno fonológico apresentam pior acurácia em relação às crianças sem alteração e, ainda, um maior tempo de resposta para os acertos. Erros envolvendo o ponto de articulação entre as oclusivas foram os mais frequentes em ambos os grupos.

ABSTRACT Purpose To compare the auditory-perceptual performance of children with and without phonological disorder (PD) in the identification task of contrasts between stops phonemes. Methods Information was selected from a database regarding the auditory-perceptual performance of 46 children (23 with a diagnosis of PD with involvement in the stops (G1) and 23 with typical speech development (G2)), aged 4 and eight years old, in an identification task of the class of stops consonants in Brazilian Portuguese, using the speech perception assessment instrument (PERCEFAL). The reaction time, the number of errors and correctness, as well as the pattern of perceptual error were considered in the analysis. Results Regarding the auditory-perceptual accuracy, T-Test showed a statistically significant difference, in which typical children had a higher average of correctness than children with PD and shorter reaction time for correct answers. Regarding the error pattern, repeated measures ANOVA showed a significant effect for the group and error pattern, but not for the interaction between group and error pattern. Tukey's Post Hoc test showed for both groups that errors involving place of articulation were superior to voicing and voicing + place of articulation errors. Conclusion children with phonological disorders have worse accuracy in relation to children without disorders and, also, longer response time for correctness. Errors involving the place of articulation between the stops were the most frequent for both groups.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar qual método de julgamento, perceptivo-auditivo (JPA) de áudios ou julgamento perceptivo-visual (JPV) (imagens ultrassonográficas), é mais sensível para detectar produções gradientes entre a classe das fricativas coronais surdas e verificar se há correlação entre essas formas de julgamento. Método Arquivos de áudio e vídeo de ultrassonografia de língua (USL) relativos às produções das palavras “sapo” e “chave”, de 11 crianças, entre 6 a 12 anos de idade, com produção de fala atípica, foram selecionados de um banco de dados e editados para os julgamentos. Após instrução e treino prévio, 20 juízes deveriam escolher, imediatamente à apresentação do estímulo (auditivo ou visual), uma dentre três opções dispostas na tela do computador. No JPA as opções eram: produção correta, incorreta ou gradiente, enquanto no JPV as opções eram imagens correspondentes à produção de [s], de [∫] ou indiferenciada. O tempo de apresentação dos estímulos e o tempo de reação foram controlados automaticamente pelo software PERCEVAL. Resultados O JPV propiciou uma maior porcentagem de identificação dos estímulos gradientes e um menor tempo de reação na realização da tarefa comparativamente ao JPA, ambos estatisticamente significante. O teste de correlação de Spearman não mostrou significância estatística entre as respostas do JPA e JPV, nem para o tempo de reação. Conclusão O JPV com o uso de imagens US mostrou-se o método mais sensível para a detecção da produção gradiente na produção de fricativas [s] e [∫], podendo ser utilizado como método complementar ao JPA na análise de fala.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze which method of judgment, auditory- perceptual (PAJ) of audios or perceptual-visual judgment (PVJ) (ultrasound images), is more sensitive to detect gradual productions between the class of deaf coronal fricatives and check if there is a correlation between these forms of judgment. Method Audio and video files of language ultrasound (LUS) related to the production of the words “frog” and “key”, of 11 children, between 6 and 12 years old, with atypical speech production, were selected from a bank data and edited for judgments. After instruction and prior training, 20 judges should choose, immediately upon presentation of the stimulus (auditory or visual), one of three options arranged on the computer screen. In PAJ the options were: correct, incorrect or gradient production, while in PVJ the options were images corresponding to the production of [s], [∫] or undifferentiated. The presentation time of the stimuli and the reaction time were automatically controlled by the PERCEVAL software. Results PVJ provided a higher percentage of identification of gradient stimuli and a shorter reaction time in performing the task compared to PAJ, both statistically significant. Spearman's correlation test did not show statistical significance between PAJ and PVJ responses, nor for reaction time. Conclusion PVJ using US images proved to be the most sensitive method for detecting gradient production in the production of fricatives [s] and [∫], and can be used as a complementary method to PAJ in speech analysis.

RESUMO Objetivo Identificar os indicadores de fluência da fala que diferenciam os sujeitos com gagueira, com transtorno fonológico e com os dois distúrbios em comorbidade. Método Participaram deste estudo 30 sujeitos de 4 a 11 anos, separados em 3 grupos, cada um com 10 sujeitos: grupo com gagueira do desenvolvimento (GG), transtorno fonológico (GTF) e os dois diagnósticos em comorbidade (GGTF). Os procedimentos foram: avaliação da fluência da fala e da fonologia. Os dados foram submetidos à análise estatística. Resultados Os sujeitos do GG e GGTF apresentaram maior ocorrência das disfluências típicas da gagueira e do total das disfluências em relação aos do GTF. Em relação às outras disfluências, os três grupos foram semelhantes. O GTF manifestou menor quantidade de repetições de palavra monossilábica, de parte de palavra e prolongamentos em relação aos sujeitos dos GG e GGTF. Os bloqueios ocorreram mais frequentemente nos dois grupos com gagueira (GG e GGTF) em relação ao GTF. A interjeição ocorreu com maior frequência no GG quando comparado com o GTF. Conclusão Dos três grupos analisados, o GTF foi o que mais se diferenciou em termos quantitativo e qualitativo. As semelhanças e diferenças entre os grupos auxiliarão o diagnóstico diferencial e, consequentemente, possibilitarão melhor terapia. A presença de bloqueio representa um importante marcador para o diagnóstico de gagueira.

ABSTRACT Purpose To identify the indicators of speech fluency that differs subjects with stuttering, with phonological disorder, and with the two disorders in comorbidity. Methods Thirty subjects aged 4-11 years old were divided into 3 groups, each one with 10 subjects: groups with developmental stuttering (SG), phonological disorder (PDG), and with two diagnoses in comorbidity (SPDG) participated in this study. The procedures were speech fluency and phonology evaluation. The data were submitted to statistical analysis. Results Subjects from SG and SPDG showed a greater occurrence of stuttering-like disfluencies and total of disfluencies in relation to the subjects with PDG. Regarding to the other disfluencies, the three groups were similar. Subjects with PDG showed fewer monosyllabic word repetitions, part of word repetition and prolongations in relation to subjects from SG and SPDG. Blocks occurred more frequently in the two groups with stuttering (SG and SPDG) than in the group with PDG. Interjection occurred more frequently in subjects from SG than in PDG. Conclusion The PDG was the most differentiated in quantitative and qualitative terms in the three groups analyzed. The similarities and differences between the groups will assist the differential diagnosis and, consequently, will enable improved therapy. The presence of blocks represents an important marker for the diagnosis of stuttering

RESUMO Objetivo: comparar os gestos articulatórios de língua do som /l/, caracterizados pela variável gênero, de crianças com desenvolvimento típico e atípico de fala. Métodos: a amostra foi composta por 60 crianças, sendo 30 com desenvolvimento típico e 30 com desenvolvimento atípico, com idades entre 4 anos a 8 anos e 11 meses, de ambos os gêneros, estando o som /l/ adquirido para todas as crianças. Foram coletados os dados articulatórios (imagem de ultrassom do movimento de língua) a partir da gravação de palavras tri/polissílabas com o som /l/, considerando-se a elevação máxima do ponto de língua, utilizando a ultrassonografia dos movimentos de língua, analisados por meio do software Articulate Assistant Advanced (AAA). Foram comparados os contornos médios de língua das crianças típicas e atípicas em relação à variável gênero, a fim de observar possíveis diferenças entre esses grupos. Resultados: houve diferença significante quanto aos gestos de língua das crianças típicas e atípicas no gênero masculino. No gênero feminino houve menor diferenciação das médias dos contornos de língua entre as crianças típicas e atípicas. Conclusão: o grupo de crianças atípicas do gênero masculino apresentou menor habilidade de refinamento dos gestos de língua quando comparadas às típicas do mesmo gênero.

ABSTRACT Objective: to compare the articulatory gestures of the /l/ sound, characterized by gender variable, of children with typical and atypical speech development. Methods: the sample was composed of 60 children, 30 with typical speech development and 30 with atypical speech development, aged between 4 years and 8 years and 11 months, of both genders, being the /l/ sound acquired for all children. The articulatory data (ultrasound image of tongue movement) were collected from the recording of tri/polysyllabic words with the sound /l/, considering the maximum elevation of the tongue point analyzed through the Articulate Assistant Advanced (AAA) software. The mean tongue contours of typical and atypical children were compared to the gender variable in order to observe possible differences between these groups. Results: there was a significant difference in the tongue gestures of typical and atypical children in the male gender. In females, there was less differentiation of the means of the tongue contours between the typical and atypical children. Conclusion: the group of atypical male children presented less ability to refine the tongue gestures when compared to the typical ones of the same gender.

RESUMO Objetivo: este estudo utilizou a ultrassonografia dos movimentos de língua e modelos dinâmicos de produção de fala para caracterizar os gestos articulatórios na produção do /l/ no Português Brasileiro (PB) em diferentes faixas etárias, comparando-os entre crianças típicas e atípicas. Método: a amostra foi constituída por 30 crianças típicas e 30 atípicas, com idades entre 4 e 8 anos, submetidas a avaliações fonoaudiológica e ultrassonográfica. A avaliação foi realizada mediante gravação da produção de palavras com o som /l/ nos contextos vocálicos de /a/, /i/ e /u/, com seis repetições de cada palavra. O software utilizado foi o Articulate Assistant Advanced (AAA). Para as análises quantitativas foram considerados: os 42 pontos que interceptaram as curvas de língua em cada imagem para descrição dos gestos articulatórios; o cálculo das linhas médias de cada curva e os intervalos de confiança entre os grupos; e o cálculo das diferenças entre as curvas médias dos contornos de língua de acordo com a faixa etária. Resultados: houve elevação de ponta de língua e retração de dorso e raiz na articulação do /l/. As crianças típicas, independentemente da idade, apresentaram maior refinamento dos gestos articulatórios de língua do que as atípicas. Nas crianças mais velhas, houve maior delimitação nos contornos médios de língua desde a ponta até a raiz. Conclusão: a ultrassonografia dos movimentos de língua é uma importante ferramenta para a caracterização dos gestos articulatórios do /l/, para diferenciação entre as produções típica e atípica deste som, e observação do desenvolvimento dos gestos articulatórios.

ABSTRACT Purpose: this study used the ultrasonography of the tongue movements and the dynamic models of speech production to characterize the articulatory gestures of in the production of /l/ at the Brazilian Portuguese in different age groups, comparing them between typical and atypical children. Methods: the sample consisted of 30 typical and 30 atypical children between ages of four and eight-years-old, who underwent speech-language and ultrasonographic evaluations. The evaluation was realized by recording words reproduction with the sound /l/ and the following vocalic contexts: /a/, /i/ and /u/, repeating six times for each word. The software for recording and analysis was Articulate Assistant Advanced (AAA). The quantitative analysis considered the 42 points that intercepted the tongue curves in each image to describe the articulatory gestures; the estimation of the mean lines of each curve and the confidence intervals between typical and atypical children groups; and the differences between the mean tongue contours curves according to age group. Results: the results presented a tongue tip elevation and dorsal and root retraction in /l/. Typical children, regardless of age, showed a greater refinement of articulatory tongue gestures than the atypical ones. In older children, there was more delimitation in the mean tongue contours from the tongue tip to the root. Conclusion: the ultrasonography of the tongue movements is a substantial implement to characterize the articulatory gestures of /l/, to the differentiation between typical and atypical productions in this sound, and observation of the development of the articulatory gestures.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar os gestos de língua de adultos com desenvolvimento típico de fala obtidos pela avaliação ultrassonográfica e compará-los, quanto ao sexo, na produção dos fonemas /r/, /l/ e /j/. Métodos Participaram da pesquisa 30 adultos com idades entre 19 e 44 anos, sendo 15 do sexo masculino e 15 do feminino. Os gestos articulatórios foram capturados pelo ultrassom Modelo DP-6600 e analisados por meio do software AAA (Articulate Assistant Advanced). Foram selecionadas quinze palavras que envolveram os sons /r/, /l/ e /j/, em diferentes contextos vocálicos: /a/, /i/, /u/. Todas as palavras foram representadas por figuras, incluídas em uma mesma frase-veículo. As imagens dos gestos articulatórios visualizadas no ultrassom corresponderam aos frames relativos à elevação máxima da ponta da língua nas produções de /r/, /l/ e /j/. Após, os gestos de língua de homens e mulheres foram comparados, a fim de verificar diferenças relacionadas ao sexo. Resultados Nos adultos típicos pesquisados houve duplos gestos de língua. A coordenação dos gestos de /r/, /l/ e /j/, associados aos variados contextos vocálicos, revelou diferentes configurações de língua entre homens e mulheres. Nas mulheres, para /r/ e /l/, observou-se menor retração de raiz e maior elevação da ponta de língua, quando comparadas aos homens. No /j/, houve o gesto de dorso de língua de forma muito semelhante em homens e mulheres. Conclusão Nos adultos típicos, em /r/ e /l/ há dois gestos de língua simultâneos: ponta e raiz de língua. No /j/, há o gesto de dorso de língua. Na análise qualitativa das palavras, tanto para /r/, quanto para /l/, em diferentes contextos vocálicos, observa-se discreta elevação de ponta de língua e retração de raiz nas mulheres, em comparação aos homens.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the tongue gestures of adults with typical speech development obtained by ultrasound evaluation and to compare them, according to gender, in the production of phonemes /r/, /l/ and /j/. Methods Thirty adults aged 19 to 44 years old participated in the research, being 15 males and 15 females. Articulatory gestures were captured by Model DP-6600 ultrasound and analyzed using AAA (Articulate Assistant Advanced) software. Fifteen words involving the sounds /r/, /l/ and /j/ were selected in different vowel contexts: /a/, /i/, /u/. All words were represented by figures, included in the same carrier phrase. The images of the articulatory gestures visualized on the ultrasound corresponded to the frames relative to the maximum elevation of the tongue tip in the productions of /r/, /l/ and /j/. Afterwards, the tongue gestures of men and women were compared in order to verify gender-related differences. Results In the typical adults surveyed, there were double tongue gestures. The coordination of gestures of /r/, /l/ and /j/, associated with the various vowel contexts, revealed different tongue configurations between men and women. In women, for /r/ and /l/, there was lower root retraction and higher tongue tip elevation when compared to men. In the /j/, the tongue dorsum gesture was very similar in men and women. Conclusion In typical adults, in /r/ and /l/ there are two simultaneous tongue gestures: tip and root of tongue. In /j/, there is the tongue dorsum gesture. In the qualitative analysis of the words, for /r/ as well as for /l/, in different vowel contexts, there was a slight elevation of the tongue tip and root retraction in women compared to men.

RESUMO Objetivo: realizar revisão integrativa da literatura sobre as características acústicas da produção da voz saudável, da infância à terceira idade. Métodos: foi realizado levantamento bibliográfico nas bases de dados Pubmed, Scielo, Medline e Lilacs, nos últimos dez anos. Foram encontrados 19 estudos que atenderam aos critérios propostos e investigaram as medidas acústicas: F0 (Frequência Fundamental), jitter, shimmer e/ou medidas de ruído, em homens e mulheres, com vozes normais, em diferentes fases da vida. Resultados: a análise mostrou que F0 é o parâmetro acústico que mais sofre mudanças com o crescimento e o envelhecimento da população, apresentando queda gradativa de seus valores da infância à velhice, na população feminina, enquanto que em homens, a redução acontece até a fase adulta. Jitter, shimmer e ruído permanecem estáveis durante a fase infantil e adulta, enquanto shimmer e medidas de ruído aumentam na terceira idade. Na literatura, não há consenso a respeito do aumento da medida de jitter na população idosa. Conclusão: da infância à terceira idade, em ambos os sexos, ocorrem mudanças vocais que são refletidas principalmente pela F0. Há escassez de informações acústicas derivadas de uma determinada população com ampla faixa etária, utilizando uma mesma metodologia. As informações deste estudo podem orientar futuras investigações que buscarão compreender as mudanças naturais ocorridas na voz humana e, também, guiar a prática clínica.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to carry out an integrative literature review about the acoustic characteristics of healthy voice production, from childhood to old age. Methods: a bibliographic survey was conducted on the databases PubMed, SciELO, MEDLINE and LILACS, covering the last 10 years. Nineteen studies were found, meeting the proposed criteria, on acoustic measurements: F0 (fundamental frequency), jitter, shimmer and/or noise measurements, in males and females, with normal voices in their different stages of life. Results: the analysis showed that F0 is the most changing acoustic parameter as people grow up and grow old. Its values present gradual fall from childhood to old age in the female population, whereas among men such decrease lasts until adulthood. Jitter, shimmer and noise remain stable throughout childhood and adulthood, while shimmer and noise measurements increase in old age. In the literature, there is no consensus regarding increase of jitter measurements in the elderly. Conclusion: from childhood to old age, in both genders, vocal changes take place which are reflected, especially by F0. There is a scarcity of information on acoustics related to specific populations with ample age range, using the same methodology. The information in this study may guide future investigations aiming to understand natural changes occurring in the human voice, in addition to guiding in the clinical practice.

RESUMO O objetivo principal deste estudo é caracterizar a produção de palavras com as sílabas-alvo do tipo CCV e CV em crianças com desenvolvimento fonológico típico e atípico. As hipóteses foram: H1 - a produção de palavras-alvo com sílaba CV e CCV das crianças típicas apresentariam diferentes medidas ultrassonográficas e acústica; H2 - as medidas ultrassonográficas e acústica poderiam diferenciar a condição clínica das crianças; H3 - as crianças com produção atípica poderiam apresentar diferenças nas medidas ultrassonográficas e acústica entre os alvos CCV (sendo o tepe na posição de C2) e CV (CCV julgadas auditivamente como CV). Dez crianças gravaram palavras com as sílabas-alvo CCV e CV. Em seguida, foram feitas análise de oitiva, análise acústica e ultrassonográficas (razões entre ponta e lâmina da língua (PL/LL), ponta e dorso da língua (PL/DL), e a lâmina e dorso da língua (LL/DL)), sendo analisadas pela ANOVA de medidas repetidas. A H1 foi corroborada pelas razões entre PL/LL, PL/DL e LL/DL, indicando que as crianças típicas produzem maior elevação de ponta e lâmina de língua na sílaba-alvo CCV se comparado à sílaba-alvo CV. As H2 e H3 foram parcialmente confirmadas pelas razões entre PL/DL e LL/DL e entre PL/DL e LL/DL, respectivamente. Os resultados sugerem que as crianças com desenvolvimento típico parecem estar em direção da produção-alvo, já que, em CCV, ocorre maior elevação da PL e de duração se comparado à sílaba CV. Para as crianças atípicas, as razões entre a PL/DL mostram que têm elevação de ponta de língua em 18,23% nas sílabas-alvo CCV, enquanto na sílaba-alvo CV é de 13,58%, sugerindo a presença de elevação da PL para produzir o tepe com magnitude reduzida e a não sobreposição dos gestos do alvo CCV, bem como gestos indiferenciados.

ABSTRACT The main purpose of this study is to characterize the production of words with the target-syllables CCV and CV types in children with typical and atypical phonological development. The hypotheses were: H1 - the production of target words with CV and CCV syllable of the typical children would present different ultrasound and acoustic measurements; H2 - ultrasound and acoustic measurements could differentiate the clinical condition of the children; H3 - children with atypical production could present differences in ultrasound and acoustic measurements between the CCV targets (being the rhotic in the position of C2) and CV (CCV aurally judged as CV). Ten children recorded words with the target-syllables CCV and CV. Subsequently, perceptive, acoustic, and ultrasound analysis were performed (ratios between tip and blade of the tongue (TT/BT), tip and dorsum of the tongue (TT/DT) and blade and dorsum of the tongue), being analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA. The H1 was corroborated by the ratios between TT/BT, TT/DT and BT/DT, indicating that typical children produce higher elevation of tip and blade of tongue on the CCV target-syllable when compared to the CV target-syllable. The H2 and H3 were partially confirmed by the ratio between TT/DT and BT/DT and between TT/DT and BT/DT, respectively. The results suggest that children with typical development seem to be in the direction of the target production, since, in CCV patterns, a higher elevation of TT and duration occurs when compared to the CV syllable. For atypical children, the ratios between TT/DT show that they have a tip of tongue elevation of 18.23% in the CCV target syllables, while in the CV target syllable it is 13.58%, suggesting the presence of TT elevation to produce the tap sound with reduced magnitude and non-overlapping gestures of the CCV target, as well as undifferentiated gestures.

RESUMO Objetivo: verificar se a acurácia no julgamento das imagens ultrassonográficas (US) varia em função da experiência dos juízes e da classe sonora - líquidas alveolares e fricativas coronais. Métodos: imagens ultrassonográficas relativas à produção das líquidas e fricativas no contexto intervocálico da vogal /a/, produzidas por 20 adultos típicos, foram julgadas por 15 juízes experientes e 15 inexperientes. Uma análise prévia das imagens foi feita para estabelecer o padrão ultrassonográfico típico das líquidas e fricativas. Considerou-se na análise a acurácia (% de acertos e erros) dos julgamentos feito pelos juízes. Utilizou-se o teste estatístico Anova Fatorial, considerando como fatores a classe sonora e a experiência dos juízes. Resultados: a ANOVA Fatorial mostrou um efeito significante para a acurácia do julgamento apenas para a classe sonora, não havendo significância quanto à experiência dos juízes nem quanto à interação entre experiência dos juízes e classe sonora. As líquidas tiveram uma menor acurácia no julgamento comparando às fricativas, confirmando sua complexidade articulatória, uma vez que envolve a produção de dois gestos simultâneos. Conclusão: a acurácia no julgamento das imagens US não variou em função da experiência dos juízes, mas foi dependente da classe sonora. Destaca-se, no entanto, que todos os juízes apresentavam conhecimento prévio sobre os processos de produção de fala o que pode ter favorecido a interpretação das imagens.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to verify if the accuracy in the judgment of the ultrasound (US) images varies according to the experience of the judges and the sound class - alveolar liquids and coronal fricatives. Methods: ultrasound images related to the production of liquids and fricatives in the intervocalic context of the vowel /a/, produced by 20 typical adults, were judged by 15 experienced judges and 15 non-experienced judges. A previous analysis of the images was performed to establish the typical ultrasound pattern of the liquids and fricatives. The accuracy (% of correctness and errors) of the judgments performed by the judges was considered in the analysis. Factorial ANOVA statistical test was used, considering as factors the sound class and the experience of the judges. Results: the Factorial ANOVA showed a significant effect for the accuracy of the judgment only for the sound class, with no significance for the judges' experience or for the interaction between the experience of judges and the sound class. The liquids had a lower accuracy in the judgment, as compared to the fricatives, confirming their articulatory complexity, since they involve the production of two simultaneous gestures. Conclusion: the accuracy in the judgment of the US images did not vary according to the experience of judges, but it was dependent on the sound class. It should be noted, however, that all judges presented previous knowledge about the processes of speech production which may have favored image interpretation.

RESUMO Objetivo O presente estudo busca comparar, por meio da ultrassonografia de língua, a produção de padrões silábicos do tipo CCV e CV realizados por crianças brasileiras com desenvolvimento fonológico típico e atípico. Método Dez crianças (cinco com desenvolvimento fonológico típico e cinco atípico) gravaram nove pares de palavras das sílabas: CCV e CV. As imagens e os áudios foram capturados simultaneamente pelo programa Articulate Assistant Advanced. Os dados foram submetidos à análise oitiva e à análise articulatória ultrassonográfica (área entre a ponta e a lâmina da língua). As medidas de área foram submetidas à ANOVA de medidas repetidas. Resultados Para os valores de área, a ANOVA mostrou um efeito significativo para a condição clínica das crianças (típica e atípica) (F(1,8)=172,48, p>0,000). As crianças atípicas (CAs) apresentaram, em ambos os padrões silábicos (CCV e CV), valores superiores da área entre a ponta e a lâmina da língua. Com relação aos padrões silábicos analisados, o teste estatístico não mostrou nenhum efeito significante (F(1,8)=0,19, p>0,658). Conclusão O uso de maior área de língua por parte das crianças com desenvolvimento fonológico atípico sugere a não diferenciação dos gestos de ponta e do corpo anterior da língua na produção de CV e CCV.

ABSTRACT Objective The present study aims to compare the production of syllabic patterns of the CVC and CV types performed by Brazilian children with typical and atypical phonological development through ultrasonography of tongue. Methods Ten children (five with typical and with five atypical phonological development) recorded nine pairs of words from the syllables: CCV and CV. The images and audios were captured simultaneously by the Articulate Assistant Advanced software. The data were submitted to perceptive analysis and ultrasonographic articulatory analysis (the area between the tip and the blade of the tongue). The area measurements were submitted to one-way repeated measures ANOVA. Results ANOVA demonstrated a significant effect for the clinical condition (typical and atypical), (F (1.8) = 172.48, p> 0.000) forthe area measurements. In both syllabic patterns (CCV and CV) the atypical children showed greater values of the area between the tip and the blade of the tongue. Regarding the syllabic patterns analyzed, the statistical test showed no significant effect (F (1.8)=0.19, p>0.658). Conclusion The use of a greater area of the tongue by children with atypical phonological development suggests the non-differentiation of the tip and the anterior body gestures of the tongue in the production of CV and CCV.

RESUMO Objetivo Caracterizar as vozes de indivíduos adultos sem queixas vocais e verificar o efeito de gênero e idade a partir de um conjunto de medidas acústicas. Método Foram analisadas 176 gravações de vozes pertencentes a adultos com idades entre 19 e 59 anos, divididas em quatro grupos etários, por década, armazenadas em uma base de dados. Todas as vozes analisadas foram classificadas com ausência de desvio na qualidade vocal. Realizou-se análise acústica dos parâmetros: Frequência Fundamental (vogal sustentada e fala encadeada), Jitter , Shimmer e Noise-to-Harmonic Ratio por meio software Multi Dimension Voice Program (KayPentax). O efeito de gênero, idade e possíveis interações foram verificados por meio do teste Anova Fatorial. Quando necessário, realizou-se post hoc com o teste Least Significant Difference. Resultados Houve mudanças na voz em função da idade, com diminuição da Frequência Fundamental nas modalidades vogal e fala encadeada em mulheres e na Frequência Fundamental da fala em homens. Em homens, foi observado aumento da medida de shimmer com o avanço da idade. Foram verificadas diferenças entre os gêneros nas medidas de Frequência Fundamental, Jitte r e Noise to Harmonic Ratio. Conclusão Mudanças vocais decorrentes do avanço da idade podem ser identificadas acusticamente, no final da fase adulta e, em mulheres, essas mudanças podem ser marcadas previamente ao período da menopausa.

ABSTRACT Purpose Characterize voices of adult individuals without vocal complaints and verify the effect of gender and age with the use of acoustic measures. Methods One-hundred and seventy-six voice recordings belonging to adults between 19 and 59 years old, divided into four age groups, for decade, recorded in a database were analyzed. All voices analyzed were classified with no deviation in vocal quality. Acoustic analysis of the parameters was performed: Fundamental Frequency (sustained vowel and connected speech), Jitter, Shimmer and Noise-to-Harmonic Ratio through Multi Dimension Voice Program (KayPentax) software. The effect of gender, age and possible interactions were verified through the Factorial Anova test. When necessary, post hoc was performed with the Least Significant Difference test. Results There were changes in the voice as a function of age, with a decrease in the Fundamental Frequency in the vowel and connected speech modalities in women and in the Fundamental Frequency of the speech in men. In men, an increase in shimmer measure was observed with the advancing age. Differences between genders were found in the measures of Fundamental Frequency, Jitter and Noise to Harmonic Ratio. Conclusion Vocal changes due to advancing age can be identified acoustically at the end of adulthood, and in women, these changes can be marked previously to the menopausal period.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar o desempenho perceptivo-auditivo de crianças na tarefa de identificação de contrastes fônicos do Português Brasileiro (doravante PB). A hipótese foi a de que a aquisição perceptivo-auditiva se desenvolve maneira gradual, obedecendo a uma ordem sistemática de aquisição. Quatro tarefas de identificação, usando o instrumento PerceFAL, foram realizadas com 66 crianças (de ambos os gêneros), entre 4- 5 anos de idade. A tarefa consistiu na apresentação do estímulo acústico, por meio de fones de ouvido, e na escolha da gravura correspondente à palavra apresentada, dentre duas possibilidades de gravuras dispostas na tela do computador. O tempo de apresentação do estímulo e o tempo de reação das crianças foram computados automaticamente pelo software PERCEVAL. O desempenho perceptivo-auditivo de crianças ocorreu de modo gradual e é dependente da classe fônica. A maior acurácia na identificação dos contrastes fônicos parece obedecer a seguinte ordem: vogais, sonorantes, oclusivas e fricativas. O tempo de reação das respostas corretas foi menor do que das respostas incorretas (exceto para a classe das vogais). A partir dos mapas perceptuais, pode-se verificar que, no interior da classe das vogais, o parâmetro ântero-posterior parece exercer um importante papel na saliência perceptual. Para a classe das obstruintes e sonorantes (nasais e líquidas), as pistas acústicas que marcam o vozeamento (no caso das obstruentes) e o modo de articulação (no caso das sonorantes) são mais robustas perceptualmente do que as pistas de ponto de articulação. Embora a percepção da fala não deva ser reduzida a uma mera interpretação sensorial, as pistas acústicas dos segmentos da fala exercem uma importante influência para a sua categorização.

ABSTRACT This study aimed at investigating children’s perceptual auditory performance in identifying phonemic contrast in Brazilian Portuguese (henceforth BP). The hypothesis is that the perceptual auditory acquisition develops in a gradual fashion, following a systematic acquisition order. We performed four identification tasks using the instrument PerceFAL with 66 children (of both genders) between 4-5 years old. The task relied on the presentation of an acoustic stimulus, through earphones, and the choice of an image corresponding to the word shown, having two image possibilities available on the computer screen. We compared both the stimulus length of time and reaction time of children automatically through the aid of the software PERCEVAL. The children’s perceptual auditory performance occurred gradually and depended on the phonemic class. A greater accuracy regarding the phonemic contrast identification seems to follow the sequence: vowels, sonorants, stops e fricatives. The reaction time for the correct answers was shorter than that of the incorrect answers (except for the vowel class). From the perceptual maps, we verified that, within the vowel class, the anterior-posterior parameter plays an important role in perceptual salience. For the obstruents and sonorants (nasal and liquid), the acoustic cues that characterize voicing (in the case of obstruents) and the articulation mode (in the case of sonorants) are perceptually more robust than the cues from the point of articulation. Although speech perception should not be reduced to a mere sensory interpretation, the acoustic cues of speech segments exert influence on their categorization.
