A quase centenária Maternidade Pro Matre, inaugurada em fevereiro de 1919, com a finalidade de prestar assistência a mães e crianças dos grupos sociais menos favorecidos, foi iniciativa do médico filantropo Fernando Magalhães e da feminista Stella de Carvalho Guerra Duval com apoio de senhoras da sociedade carioca. Sua criação inseriu-se em movimento de assistência materno-infantil que a historiografia hoje chama de projeto maternalista, com base na ideia de que mãe e filho são culturalmente indissociáveis. Ao apresentar as fontes existentes no arquivo institucional da Pro Matre, partilhamos possibilidades de pesquisa no campo da assistência materno-infantil no Rio de Janeiro e, por extensão, no Brasil.

Inaugurated in February 1919 to provide assistance to mothers and children from underprivileged social groups, the nearly century-old Maternidade Pro Matre maternity hospital was an initiative of physician and philanthropist Fernando Magalhães and of feminist Stella de Carvalho Guerra Duval, with the support of society women from Rio de Janeiro. Its creation was part of a mother-child assistance movement that historiography now calls the 'maternalist project,' which was based on the notion of the cultural inseparability of mother and child. The sources available at Pro Matre's institutional archive open up research possibilities in the field of mother-child assistance in Rio de Janeiro and, by extension, Brazil.

Esse artigo aborda as culturas de assistência ao parto na Bahia oitocentista e trabalha com a hipótese de que, em Salvador, coexistiram duas culturas obstétricas: a dos médicos-parteiros, que faziam uso dos recursos técnicos e cognitivos disponibilizados pela obstetrícia como especialidade médica; e a das tradicionais parteiras, cujo saber era de natureza empírico-sensorial. Apesar de todo o esforço empreendido pelos médicos para angariar a confiança das famílias baianas, as parteiras continuaram hegemônicas na arte de 'aparar' crianças e de tratar das doenças de mulheres. A análise enfoca os segmentos sociais e profissionais que atuaram na assistência ao parto; o papel da Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia na formação e certificação das parteiras; e a utilização dos periódicos como meio de legitimação dos médicos-parteiros; ao tempo em que problematiza a pequena participação das parteiras nesses veículos de comunicação.

This paper presents the traditions of assisted childbirth in the Brazilian state of Bahia in the 19th Century and develops the hypothesis that two obstetrical traditions coexisted in the capital, Salvador, namely the doctor-midwives - who used technical resources and knowledge acquired from obstetrics as a medical specialty - and the traditional midwives, whose know-how was purely of an empirical-sensorial nature. Despite all efforts employed by the doctors to win over the confidence of Bahian families, the midwives continued to be predominant in the art of 'delivering' children and treating female illnesses. The analysis focuses on the social and professional segments that were active in assisted birth; the role of the Bahian College of Medicine (Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia) in the training and certification of midwives and the use of newspapers as a way to legitimize the doctor-midwives; it also discusses the scant coverage of the midwives in these media.

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo discutir a presença alemã na Bahia do século XIX. Registrava-se no período intensa movimentação de estrangeiros na cidade de Salvador e em outros pontos da então província, envolvidos em atividades comerciais, agrícolas, industriais e de prestação de serviços. Dentre todos os alemães que atravessaram o Atlântico para se estabelecer na Bahia, interessa especificamente analisar os médicos, investigando o que motivou o deslocamento desses profissionais para a América e como estiveram inseridos no campo do saber científico na época. Destacam-se aqui os estudos realizados por Otto Wucherer em seu percurso como clínico, pesquisador e agente de interseção entre a comunidade científica alemã e a baiana.

This paper discusses the German presence in 19th century Bahia. There was an intense flow of foreigners to the city of Salvador and other parts of what was then a province; these people were involved in trade, farming, industry and services. Among the Germans who crossed the Atlantic to establish themselves in Bahia, medical doctors are a particularly interesting object of study, along with their motives for going to America and how they worked in the field of scientific knowledge at the time. The paper highlights studies by Otto Wucherer and his activities as a clinician, researcher and agent of the intersection between the German scientific and the Bahian communities.
