RESUMO Objetivo: comparar os gestos articulatórios de língua do som /l/, caracterizados pela variável gênero, de crianças com desenvolvimento típico e atípico de fala. Métodos: a amostra foi composta por 60 crianças, sendo 30 com desenvolvimento típico e 30 com desenvolvimento atípico, com idades entre 4 anos a 8 anos e 11 meses, de ambos os gêneros, estando o som /l/ adquirido para todas as crianças. Foram coletados os dados articulatórios (imagem de ultrassom do movimento de língua) a partir da gravação de palavras tri/polissílabas com o som /l/, considerando-se a elevação máxima do ponto de língua, utilizando a ultrassonografia dos movimentos de língua, analisados por meio do software Articulate Assistant Advanced (AAA). Foram comparados os contornos médios de língua das crianças típicas e atípicas em relação à variável gênero, a fim de observar possíveis diferenças entre esses grupos. Resultados: houve diferença significante quanto aos gestos de língua das crianças típicas e atípicas no gênero masculino. No gênero feminino houve menor diferenciação das médias dos contornos de língua entre as crianças típicas e atípicas. Conclusão: o grupo de crianças atípicas do gênero masculino apresentou menor habilidade de refinamento dos gestos de língua quando comparadas às típicas do mesmo gênero.

ABSTRACT Objective: to compare the articulatory gestures of the /l/ sound, characterized by gender variable, of children with typical and atypical speech development. Methods: the sample was composed of 60 children, 30 with typical speech development and 30 with atypical speech development, aged between 4 years and 8 years and 11 months, of both genders, being the /l/ sound acquired for all children. The articulatory data (ultrasound image of tongue movement) were collected from the recording of tri/polysyllabic words with the sound /l/, considering the maximum elevation of the tongue point analyzed through the Articulate Assistant Advanced (AAA) software. The mean tongue contours of typical and atypical children were compared to the gender variable in order to observe possible differences between these groups. Results: there was a significant difference in the tongue gestures of typical and atypical children in the male gender. In females, there was less differentiation of the means of the tongue contours between the typical and atypical children. Conclusion: the group of atypical male children presented less ability to refine the tongue gestures when compared to the typical ones of the same gender.

RESUMO Objetivo: este estudo utilizou a ultrassonografia dos movimentos de língua e modelos dinâmicos de produção de fala para caracterizar os gestos articulatórios na produção do /l/ no Português Brasileiro (PB) em diferentes faixas etárias, comparando-os entre crianças típicas e atípicas. Método: a amostra foi constituída por 30 crianças típicas e 30 atípicas, com idades entre 4 e 8 anos, submetidas a avaliações fonoaudiológica e ultrassonográfica. A avaliação foi realizada mediante gravação da produção de palavras com o som /l/ nos contextos vocálicos de /a/, /i/ e /u/, com seis repetições de cada palavra. O software utilizado foi o Articulate Assistant Advanced (AAA). Para as análises quantitativas foram considerados: os 42 pontos que interceptaram as curvas de língua em cada imagem para descrição dos gestos articulatórios; o cálculo das linhas médias de cada curva e os intervalos de confiança entre os grupos; e o cálculo das diferenças entre as curvas médias dos contornos de língua de acordo com a faixa etária. Resultados: houve elevação de ponta de língua e retração de dorso e raiz na articulação do /l/. As crianças típicas, independentemente da idade, apresentaram maior refinamento dos gestos articulatórios de língua do que as atípicas. Nas crianças mais velhas, houve maior delimitação nos contornos médios de língua desde a ponta até a raiz. Conclusão: a ultrassonografia dos movimentos de língua é uma importante ferramenta para a caracterização dos gestos articulatórios do /l/, para diferenciação entre as produções típica e atípica deste som, e observação do desenvolvimento dos gestos articulatórios.

ABSTRACT Purpose: this study used the ultrasonography of the tongue movements and the dynamic models of speech production to characterize the articulatory gestures of in the production of /l/ at the Brazilian Portuguese in different age groups, comparing them between typical and atypical children. Methods: the sample consisted of 30 typical and 30 atypical children between ages of four and eight-years-old, who underwent speech-language and ultrasonographic evaluations. The evaluation was realized by recording words reproduction with the sound /l/ and the following vocalic contexts: /a/, /i/ and /u/, repeating six times for each word. The software for recording and analysis was Articulate Assistant Advanced (AAA). The quantitative analysis considered the 42 points that intercepted the tongue curves in each image to describe the articulatory gestures; the estimation of the mean lines of each curve and the confidence intervals between typical and atypical children groups; and the differences between the mean tongue contours curves according to age group. Results: the results presented a tongue tip elevation and dorsal and root retraction in /l/. Typical children, regardless of age, showed a greater refinement of articulatory tongue gestures than the atypical ones. In older children, there was more delimitation in the mean tongue contours from the tongue tip to the root. Conclusion: the ultrasonography of the tongue movements is a substantial implement to characterize the articulatory gestures of /l/, to the differentiation between typical and atypical productions in this sound, and observation of the development of the articulatory gestures.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar os gestos de língua de adultos com desenvolvimento típico de fala obtidos pela avaliação ultrassonográfica e compará-los, quanto ao sexo, na produção dos fonemas /r/, /l/ e /j/. Métodos Participaram da pesquisa 30 adultos com idades entre 19 e 44 anos, sendo 15 do sexo masculino e 15 do feminino. Os gestos articulatórios foram capturados pelo ultrassom Modelo DP-6600 e analisados por meio do software AAA (Articulate Assistant Advanced). Foram selecionadas quinze palavras que envolveram os sons /r/, /l/ e /j/, em diferentes contextos vocálicos: /a/, /i/, /u/. Todas as palavras foram representadas por figuras, incluídas em uma mesma frase-veículo. As imagens dos gestos articulatórios visualizadas no ultrassom corresponderam aos frames relativos à elevação máxima da ponta da língua nas produções de /r/, /l/ e /j/. Após, os gestos de língua de homens e mulheres foram comparados, a fim de verificar diferenças relacionadas ao sexo. Resultados Nos adultos típicos pesquisados houve duplos gestos de língua. A coordenação dos gestos de /r/, /l/ e /j/, associados aos variados contextos vocálicos, revelou diferentes configurações de língua entre homens e mulheres. Nas mulheres, para /r/ e /l/, observou-se menor retração de raiz e maior elevação da ponta de língua, quando comparadas aos homens. No /j/, houve o gesto de dorso de língua de forma muito semelhante em homens e mulheres. Conclusão Nos adultos típicos, em /r/ e /l/ há dois gestos de língua simultâneos: ponta e raiz de língua. No /j/, há o gesto de dorso de língua. Na análise qualitativa das palavras, tanto para /r/, quanto para /l/, em diferentes contextos vocálicos, observa-se discreta elevação de ponta de língua e retração de raiz nas mulheres, em comparação aos homens.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the tongue gestures of adults with typical speech development obtained by ultrasound evaluation and to compare them, according to gender, in the production of phonemes /r/, /l/ and /j/. Methods Thirty adults aged 19 to 44 years old participated in the research, being 15 males and 15 females. Articulatory gestures were captured by Model DP-6600 ultrasound and analyzed using AAA (Articulate Assistant Advanced) software. Fifteen words involving the sounds /r/, /l/ and /j/ were selected in different vowel contexts: /a/, /i/, /u/. All words were represented by figures, included in the same carrier phrase. The images of the articulatory gestures visualized on the ultrasound corresponded to the frames relative to the maximum elevation of the tongue tip in the productions of /r/, /l/ and /j/. Afterwards, the tongue gestures of men and women were compared in order to verify gender-related differences. Results In the typical adults surveyed, there were double tongue gestures. The coordination of gestures of /r/, /l/ and /j/, associated with the various vowel contexts, revealed different tongue configurations between men and women. In women, for /r/ and /l/, there was lower root retraction and higher tongue tip elevation when compared to men. In the /j/, the tongue dorsum gesture was very similar in men and women. Conclusion In typical adults, in /r/ and /l/ there are two simultaneous tongue gestures: tip and root of tongue. In /j/, there is the tongue dorsum gesture. In the qualitative analysis of the words, for /r/ as well as for /l/, in different vowel contexts, there was a slight elevation of the tongue tip and root retraction in women compared to men.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar o uso da eletropalatografia e ultrassonografia na área da Fonoaudiologia por meio de revisão narrativa de literatura. Estratégia de pesquisa Foi realizada pesquisa bibliográfica nas bases de dados PubMed e Scielo, utilizando como descritores electropalatography, electropalatography AND evaluation, electropalatography AND therapy, electropalatography AND ultrasonography, electropalatography AND speech. Critérios de seleção Como critério da pesquisa em base de dados, foram selecionados: estudos dos últimos cinco anos e estudos em humanos. Na pré-seleção, foram descartados estudos duplicados, não disponibilizados na íntegra e que não apresentassem relação direta da eletropalatografia para a área da Fonoaudiologia. Análise dos dados A análise de dados foi realizada de forma descritiva, seguindo as subdivisões: título, área, ano, tema, aplicação e conclusão do estudo. Resultados Foram selecionados vinte e um artigos, oito deles utilizando o termo electropalatography, dois com os descritores electropalatography AND evaluation, seis artigos com os descritores electropalatography AND therapy, três artigos com os descritores electropalatography AND ultrasonography e dois artigos com os descritores electropalatography AND speech. Conclusão Foram encontrados e analisados diferentes tipos de pesquisas envolvendo o uso da eletropalatografia na área da Fonoaudiologia. Poucas pesquisas utilizaram concomitantemente a eletropalatografia e a ultrassonografia.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the use of electropalatography and ultrasonography regarding speech therapy through literature narrative review. Research strategies A literature review was conducted at PubMed and Scielo databases, using descriptors as electropalatography, electropalatography AND evaluation, electropalatography AND therapy, electropalatography AND ultrasonography, electropalatography AND speech. Selection criteria The research criteria selected in the database were: studies in the past five years and studies in humans. In the pre-selection, studies that were duplicate, not fully available, and have shown no direct relation with electropalatography in speech-language therapy were discarded. Data analysis Data analysis was performed descriptively, following subdivisions: title, area, year, subject, implementation, and conclusion of the study. Results Twenty one papers were selected, eight of them using the term electropalatography, two with the keywords electropalatography AND evaluation, six with the keywords electropalatography AND therapy, three of them with the keywords electropalatography AND ultrasonography, and two papers with the keywords electropalatography AND speech. Conclusion Different types of research involving the use of electropalatography in the field of speech-language therapy were found and analyzed. Few researches have concomitantly used electropalatography and ultrasonography.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar e comparar os contornos médios de língua e os gestos articulatórios na produção do [j] em adultos e crianças com desenvolvimento típico e crianças com desenvolvimento atípico de fala. As crianças com desenvolvimento atípico de fala apresentavam desordens nos sons da fala caracterizadas como desvio fonológico. Método O diagnóstico foi determinado pelas avaliações fonoaudiológicas. Desse modo, a amostra foi constituída por três grupos: 30 adultos com desenvolvimento típico de fala (idades entre 19 e 44 anos), 30 crianças com desenvolvimento típico de fala e 30 crianças com desvio fonológico, denominadas neste estudo como atípicas (idades entre quatro anos e oito anos e onze meses). Para todos os grupos, foi realizada avaliação ultrassonográfica dos movimentos da língua. A pesquisa comparou os contornos médios de língua entre os três grupos em diferentes contextos vocálicos seguintes ao som [j]. Para a delimitação dos gestos, considerou-se a elevação máxima da ponta da língua, utilizando-se software Articulate Assistant Advanced (AAA) e imagens no plano sagital/Modo B. Os pontos que interceptaram as curvas de língua foram analisados pela ferramenta estatística R. Os gráficos dos contornos de língua foram obtidos através do cálculo de intervalo com 95% de confiança. Depois dessa etapa, foram obtidas as regiões com diferenças significativas (p-valor ≤ 0,05) entre os grupos de CT e CA. Resultados Os contornos médios de língua demonstraram o gesto para a semivogal [j] na comparação entre crianças típicas e atípicas. Para a semivogal [j], há um gesto de língua, de dorso, em direção à área central do palato duro, sendo observadas diferenças significativas entre as crianças. Conclusão Os resultados permitiram concluir que existem diferenças entre os grupos de crianças quanto à capacidade de refinar os gestos articulatórios.

ABSTRACT Purpose Analyze and compare the mean tongue contours and articulatory gestures in the production of the sound [j] in adults and children with typical and atypical speech development. The children with atypical development presented speech sound disorders. Methods The diagnosis was determined by speech assessments. The study sample was composed of 90 individuals divided into three groups: 30 adults with typical speech development aged 19-44 years (AT), 30 children with typical speech development (CT), and 30 children with speech sound disorders, named as atypical in this study, aged four years to eight years and eleven months (CA). Ultrasonography assessment of tongue movements was performed for all groups. Mean tongue contours were compared between three groups in different vocalic contexts following the sound [j]. The maximum elevation of the tongue tip was considered for delimitation of gestures using the Articulate Assistant Advanced (AAA) software and images in sagittal plane/Mode B. The points that intercepted the language curves were analyzed by the statistical tool R. The graphs of tongue contours were obtained adopting a 95% confidence interval. After that, the regions with significant statistical differences (p<0.05) between the CT and CA groups were obtained. Results The mean tongue contours demonstrated the gesture for the sound [j] in the comparison between typical and atypical children. For the semivowel [j], there is an articulatory gesture of tongue and dorsum towards the center of the hard palate, with significant differences observed between the children. Conclusion The results showed differences between the groups of children regarding the ability to refine articulatory gestures.

OBJETIVO: analisar as mudanças fonológicas obtidas (sistema fonológico, inventário fonético e alterações de traços distintivos) pré e pós-tratamento utilizando o Modelo ABAB-Retirada e Provas Múltiplas em diferentes gravidades do desvio fonológico. MÉTODOS: foram realizadas avaliações fonoaudiológicas em oito crianças com diferentes gravidades do desvio fonológico, cuja média de idade no início do tratamento era de 5:5. Todos receberam tratamento fonológico pelo Modelo "ABAB-Retirada" e Provas Múltiplas. Foram analisadas as evoluções quanto ao inventário fonético, sistema fonológico e alterações nos traços distintivos. RESULTADOS: todas as gravidades apresentaram evoluções no sistema fonológico. CONCLUSÕES: os desvios fonológicos graves apresentaram maiores evoluções.

PURPOSE: to analyze the phonological changes obtained (phonological system, phonetic inventory and distinctive features alterations) pre and post-treatment by ABAB-Withdrawal and Multiple Probes Approach in different severity levels of phonological disorders. METHODS: the diagnosis was determined by the phonoaudiological evaluation in eight children with different severity level of phonological disorders, whose average age was 5:5 in the beginning of the treatment. All of them were treated by ABAB-Withdrawal and Multiple Probes Approach. It was analyzed the phonetic inventory, phonological system and distinctive features alterations. RESULTS: all severity levels of phonological disorders demonstrated some improvement in the phonological system. CONCLUSIONS: the severe phonological disorders presented the highest improvement among the different levels.

Objetivo Investigar os dados de natureza articulatória de consoantes líquidas e a coarticulação dessas consoantes diante da produção de diferentes contextos vocálicos, em adultos falantes típicos do Português Brasileiro (PB). Métodos Participaram da pesquisa cinco adultos com idades entre 25 e 37 anos. Os gestos articulatórios foram capturados pelo ultrassom Modelo DP-6600 e analisados por meio do software AAA (Articulate Assistant Advanced). Foram selecionados três pares de palavras com os sons /r/ e /l/, em Onset Medial, em diferentes contextos vocálicos: /a/, /i/, /u/. Todas as palavras foram representadas por figuras, incluídas em uma mesma frase veículo. As imagens dos gestos articulatórios visualizadas no ultrassom corresponderam aos frames relativos à elevação máxima da ponta da língua nas produções de /r/ e /l/. Resultados /r/ e /l/ apresentaram dois gestos simultâneos: ponta e corpo da língua. A vogal /i/, em contexto seguinte ao /r/, e a vogal /u/, em contexto seguinte ao /l/, proporcionaram maior grau de constrição da ponta e do corpo da língua, respectivamente. Conclusão Os segmentos pesquisados apresentaram duplos gestos de língua. A coordenação dos gestos de /r/ e /l/, associados aos diferentes contextos vocálicos, revelou diferentes configurações.

Purpose Analyze the data of the nature articulatory of liquid consonants and the coarticulation of different contexts vowel production with the use of ultrasound with a focus on the Gestural Phonology in the speaker typical adults from the Brazilian Portuguese. Methods Participated in the survey five adults, aged 25 and 37 years. Three pairs of words were selected with the sounds /r/ and /l/, in Onset Medial, in different vowel contexts: /a/, /i/, /u/. The recordings of tongue images were made with the Portable Ultrasound Model DP- 6600. All the words were represented in images included in the same vehicle sentence. The articulatory gestures were captured by the ultrasound and analyzed by AAA software (Articulate Assistant Advanced). The images of articulatory gestures viewed in ultrasound corresponded of frames to the maximum elevation of the tongue tip in the production of /l/ and /r/. Results /r/ and /l/ have two gestures simultaneous: tip and body of tongue. The vowel /i/ following the /r/ and vowel /u/ following the /l/ showed higher degree of constriction in the tip and body of tongue, respectively. Conclusion The segments researched present doubles gestures of tongue. The coordination of gestures of /r/ and /l/ associated with different vowel contexts reveals different gestural configurations.

OBJETIVO: Apresentar estudos recentes que utilizaram a ultrassonografia na área da Fonoaudiologia, os quais evidenciam possibilidades de aplicabilidade dessa técnica nas diferentes subáreas. ESTRATÉGIA DE PESQUISA: Foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica na base de dados PubMed, utilizando como descritores "ultrasonic"; "speech"; "phonetics"; "Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences"; "voice"; "deglutition" e "myofunctional therapy", contemplando algumas das áreas da Fonoaudiologia. Foram também empregados na busca os termos "ultrasound"; "ultrasonography"; "swallow"; "orofacial myofunctional therapy" e "orofacial myology". CRITÉRIOS DE SELEÇÃO: Como critérios da pesquisa em base de dados, selecionaram-se: estudos dos últimos cinco anos e estudos em humanos. Na pré-seleção, foram descartados estudos duplicados, não disponibilizados na íntegra e que não apresentassem relação direta da ultrassonografia com a Fonoaudiologia. ANÁLISE DOS DADOS: A análise dos dados foi realizada de forma descritiva e separada para cada subárea da Fonoaudiologia. Consideraram-se os itens: objetivos; sujeitos; procedimentos e resultados. RESULTADOS: Foram selecionados 12 artigos para a subárea ultrassom versus fala/fonética; cinco para ultrassom versus voz; um para ultrassom versus músculos mastigatórios e dez para ultrassom versus deglutição. Não foram encontrados estudos referentes aos últimos cinco anos relacionando "ultrassom" e "Fonoaudiologia". CONCLUSÃO: Foram encontradas diferentes pesquisas que se voltaram ao emprego da ultrassonografia na Fonoaudiologia. Cada qual, a partir de seu objetivo, confirma novas possibilidades de uso desse instrumento nas diversas subáreas, visando a um diagnóstico mais preciso e novas possibilidades, tanto avaliativas quanto terapêuticas.

PURPOSE: To present recent studies that used the ultrasound in the fields of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology, which evidence possibilities of the applicability of this technique in different subareas. RESEARCH STRATEGY: A bibliographic research was carried out in the PubMed database, using the keywords "ultrasonic," "speech," "phonetics," "Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences," "voice," "deglutition," and "myofunctional therapy," comprising some areas of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology Sciences. The keywords "ultrasound," "ultrasonography," "swallow," "orofacial myofunctional therapy," and "orofacial myology" were also used in the search. SELECTION CRITERIA: Studies in humans from the past 5 years were selected. In the preselection, duplicated studies, articles not fully available, and those that did not present direct relation between ultrasound and Speech Language Pathology and Audiology Sciences were discarded. DATA ANALYSIS: The data were analyzed descriptively and classified subareas of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology Sciences. The following items were considered: purposes, participants, procedures, and results. RESULTS: We selected 12 articles for ultrasound versus speech/phonetics subarea, 5 for ultrasound versus voice, 1 for ultrasound versus muscles of mastication, and 10 for ultrasound versus swallow. Studies relating "ultrasound" and "Speech Language Pathology and Audiology Sciences" in the past 5 years were not found. CONCLUSION: Different studies on the use of ultrasound in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology Sciences were found. Each of them, according to its purpose, confirms new possibilities of the use of this instrument in the several subareas, aiming at a more accurate diagnosis and new evaluative and therapeutic possibilities.

OBJETIVO: Analisar a generalização baseada nas relações implicacionais obtida pelo Modelo "ABAB-Retirada e Provas Múltiplas" em crianças com diferentes graus de severidade de desvio fonológico. MÉTODOS: Análise dos dados de fala de oito sujeitos com desvios fonológicos. Foram realizadas avaliações da linguagem compreensiva e expressiva, do sistema sensório-motor oral, da psicomotricidade, da discriminação auditiva e avaliação fonológica, além de avaliações complementares (otorrinolaringológica audiológica e neurológica). A seguir, foi determinado o grau de severidade do desvio fonológico, para então iniciar o tratamento, em que foi aplicado o Modelo "ABAB-Retirada e Provas Múltiplas". RESULTADOS: Foram observadas generalizações baseadas em relações implicacionais. CONCLUSÕES: O Modelo "ABAB-Retirada e Provas Múltiplas" foi eficaz no tratamento dos sujeitos com desvio fonológico. A generalização baseada em relações implicacionais concordou, em parte, com o Modelo Implicacional de Complexidade de Traços (MICT).

PURPOSE: To analyze the generalization based on the implicational relationships obtained by the "ABAB Withdrawal and Multiple Probes Model" in children with different severity degrees of phonological deviation. METHODS: Speech data analysis of eight subjects with phonological deviations. Evaluations of receptive and expressive language, oral sensory-motor oral system, psychomotricity, hea-ring discrimination and phonology were carried out, in addition to audiological, otorhinolaryngological and neurological evaluations. Next, the severity degree of the phonological deviation was determined, and the treatment was initiated, using the "ABAB Withdrawal and Multiple Probes Model". RESULTS: Generalizations based on implicational relationships were observed. CONCLUSIONS: The "ABAB Withdrawal and Multiple Probes Model" was effective in the treatment of subjects with phonological deviation. The generalization based on implicational relationships coincided, partly, with the Implicational Model of Features Complexity.
