Neste trabalho objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do monocultivo e do consórcio de macaúba e pastagem sobre a qualidade química e os compartimentos de carbono em Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo no Cerrado Maranhense. Foram estudados quatro sistemas de uso do solo: macaúba, pastagem, macaúba consorciada com pastagem e vegetação nativa de cerrado. Nesses sistemas foram coletadas amostras de solo da superfície até 60 cm, para determinação dos atributos químicos e dos teores e estoques de carbono orgânico do solo. Os maiores valores de P, K, Ca e Mg foram observados nas áreas sob pastagem. Os estoques de carbono orgânico total e os teores de carbono lábil foram maiores no solo com vegetação nativa até 60 cm de profundidade, seguida pelo sistema macaúba associada com pastagem. Maiores valores de carbono da biomassa microbiana e de quociente microbiano foram observados no solo sob pastagem em todas as camadas. A presença da pastagem é importante no consórcio com macaubeiras pois aumenta os níveis de fertilidade do solo e os estoques de carbono favorecendo a melhoria da qualidade do solo nas condições do cerrado maranhense.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the cultivation of acrocomia palm (Acrocomia aculeata) intercropped or not with pasture on the chemical quality and carbon pools of an Oxisol of the Savanna of Maranhão state. Four land use systems were studied: acrocomia, pasture, acrocomia intercropped with pasture and savanna native vegetation. Soil samples were collected up to 60 cm depth for determination of chemical attributes and soil organic carbon contents and stocks. The highest values of P, K, Ca and Mg were observed in the soil under pasture. Total organic carbon stocks and labile carbon content were higher under native vegetation up to 60 cm followed by acrocomia intercropped with pasture system. Higher values of microbial biomass carbon and microbial quotient were verified in the soil under pasture in all depths. Pasture is important to be intercropped with acrocomia since it increases the soil fertility levels and soil carbon stocks favoring the improvement of the soil quality in the Savanna of Maranhão state.

As plantas infestadas são responsáveis por perdas significativas na produção do algodão a nível mundial, cujo controle é difícil e oneroso. Com o objetivo de se estimar custos de produção e analisar economicamente a eficiência da plasticultura e de métodos de controle de ervas daninhas na cultura do algodoeiro herbáceo irrigado e em sequeiro, utilizaram-se dados obtidos de ensaios conduzidos nos municípios de Barbalha e Missão Velha, no Cariri Cearense, determinando-se o custo de produção, a receita líquida, o índice de lucratividade e os indicadores de viabilidade econômica: Valor Presente Líquido (VPL), Taxa Interna de Retorno (TIR) e Relação Benefício-Custo (B/C). Verificou-se que tanto no cultivo irrigado como no cultivo de sequeiro, o método de controle de ervas daninhas mais eficiente e bem menos oneroso, foi o mecânico com preparo do solo convencional, e mais lucrativo no cultivo de sequeiro, apresentando maior VPL e TIR que os demais. O maior custo de produção por hectare foi obtido no cultivo irrigado, utilizando-se o método e controle integrado em sistema de preparo do solo com aiveca. O uso da plasticultura como método de controle de ervas daninhas, é economicamente viável apenas para o cultivo do algodoeiro de sequeiro.

Weeds are responsible for significant losses in cotton production in the world and, its control is difficult and expensive. This work has the main objective to estimate production costs and analyse economically the efficiency of plasticulture and different methods of weeds control in irrigated and dry land herbaceous cotton, using data obtained in Barbalha and Missão Velha areas, in the state of Ceará, Brazil, evaluating production costs, net revenues, profitability index and economic viability indicators: Liquid Present Value (LPV), Ratio of Internal Return (RIT) and Benefit-Cost Ratio (B/C). It was verified that in irrigated as well as in rainfed crop, the more efficient and economically viable weed control method was the mechanical method with conventional preparation of the soil, being more lucrative in rainfed crop, with higher LPV and RIT. The high production per hectare was verified in irrigated crop, using as integrated system control in land preparation with moldboard plough. The plasticulture used a method of weed control is economically viable only for rainfed cotton.

Avaliou-se o efeito de doses e formas de aplicação de nitrogênio sobre o rendimento de vagens e de grãos verdes e secos do feijão-caupi, cv. IPA 206. O experimento foi conduzido na área experimental da UFPB, em Areia, de abril a agosto/2001. O delineamento utilizado foi de blocos casualizados, com os tratamentos distribuídos em esquema fatorial 5 x 2, onde o primeiro fator correspondeu às doses de nitrogênio (0; 25; 50; 75 e 100 kg ha-1) e, o segundo fator, às formas de aplicação (solo e via foliar), em quatro repetições. Foram utilizadas parcelas de 20 plantas, espaçadas de 0,8 x 0,4 m. O rendimento máximo estimado de vagens (11 t ha-1), de grãos verdes (9,3 t ha-1) e de grãos secos (3,6 t ha-1) foi obtido com 62, 61 e 56 kg ha-1 de nitrogênio aplicados no solo, respectivamente. Quando o nitrogênio foi aplicado via foliar os rendimentos de vagens (10 t ha-1), de grãos verdes (8,4 t ha-1) e de grãos secos (3,4 t ha-1) alcançaram valores máximos nas doses de 64, 6 e 59 kg ha-1, respectivamente.

The cowpea-bean, known as macassar-bean or rope-bean is one of the main crops in the Northeast region of Brazil. It is consumed either as fresh or dried beans. Cowpea is cultivated in almost all regions of the Paraíba State, representing 75% of the cultivated area with cowpea-beans. The low yield is attributed to the lack of a research program about mineral fertilization. The effect of levels and forms of nitrogen applications on yield of pods and green and dry grains of cowpea-bean, cv. IPA 206 was evaluates. The experiment was performed at the Universidade Federal da Paraíba, in Areia, Brazil, from April to August/2001, in a randomized blocks design. Treatments were distributed in a factorial scheme 5 x 2, where the first factor corresponded to nitrogen levels (0; 25; 50; 75 and 100 kg ha-1) and, the second factor, the application forms (soil and foliar application), in four repetitions. Each plot consisted of 20 plants, spaced 0.8 x 0.4 m apart. The estimated maximum pods yield (11 t ha-1), of green grains (9.3 t ha-1) and of dry grains (3.6 t ha-1) was obtained with 62, 61 and 56 kg ha-1 of nitrogen applied in the soil, respectively. With foliar applications the yield of pods (10 t ha-1), of green grains (8.4 t ha-1) and of dry grains (3.4 t ha-1) reached maximum values applying levels of 64, 63 and 59 kg ha-1 of nitrogen respectively.

O presente estudo foi conduzido no período de julho a dezembro de 1998, em galpão coberto, no DSER/CCA/UFPB, município de Areia, PB, com o objetivo de se avaliar o efeito dos níveis de água disponível no solo (AD) (20, 40, 60 e 80%) sobre a emissão/abscisão de estruturas reprodutivas do algodoeiro herbáceo, cv. CNPA 7H; utilizou-se delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com quatro tratamentos e três repetições, em três épocas de amostragem. O crescimento vegetativo e o reprodutivo, aumentaram com os níveis de AD no solo, sendo a menor média de altura de plantas (34,5 cm), área foliar (633,05 cm²), acumulação de fitomassa da parte aérea (9,04 g), botões florais (4,67), flores (3,50), maçãs (2,33) e capulhos (1,33) por planta, observada no tratamento com o nível de 20% da AD e a maior, 74,33 cm, 2.634,81cm², 24,86 g, 9,67, 7,0, 6,0 e 4,3 por planta, respectivamente, no tratamento com o nível de 60% da AD. Apesar do estresse hídrico ter afetado (p<0,05) quantitativamente o aumento da emissão e abscisão de estruturas reprodutivas do algodoeiro, existe uma inter-dependência entre essas estruturas, independente do nível de estresse hídrico a que foi submetido; assim, o aumento ou redução do número de botões florais retidos culmina com o de flores, maçãs e capulhos de forma sucessiva, mantendo uma proporcionalidade padrão.

The present study was conducted from July to December 1998, in a covered area at DSER/CCA/UFPB, Areia/PB with the objective of evaluating the effect of four levels of available water (AW - 20, 40, 60 and 80%) in soil on the emission/abscission of reproductive structures of herbaceous cotton plant, cv. CNPA 7H. A completely randomized experimental design was used, with four treatments replicated three times and sampled at three different dates. Vegetative and reproductive growth increased with AW levels in soil. Minimum mean values for plant height (34.5 cm), leaf area (633.05 cm²), biomass accumulation of aerial parts (9.04 g), number of flower buds (4.67), flowers (3.50), fruits (2.33) and bolls (1.33) per plant, were observed for the 20% AW treatment. In contrast, the highest mean values observed for the 60% AW treatment, respectively, were 74.33 cm, 2,634.8 cm², 24.86 g, 9.67, 7.0, 6.0 and 4.3. Water stress showed significant effect (p<0,05) on emission and abscission of reproductive structures of cotton plants in an independent way. Thus, an increase or a decrease in the number of retained flower buds precedes a similar pattern for the number of flowers, fruit and mature bolls, keeping a standard proportionality, regardless of the water stress level.
