ABSTRACT The year 2006 saw the onset of a project aimed at speeding up information sciences doctoral training in Cuba. The Scientific Information and Documentation Doctoral Program, developed by the University of Granada, Spain, and the University of Havana, graduated a total 50 Cuban and two Latin American PhDs in ten years. The project was geared to updating and strengthening research activity in the country, as well as increasing the publication of papers in scientific journals of broad international visibility. The purpose of the present study was to determine with a bibliometric approach the impact of this doctoral program on national scientific productivity levels and the country's regional and worldwide ranking in the field of library and information sciences. The country's ranking was found to have improved in the databases Web of Science and Scopus. Identification was made of the proportion of studies stemming from the doctoral program with respect to the total volume of Cuban scientific production about the specialty in the period 2006-2019. One third of the national scientific production in both databases was generated by graduates from the three groups making up the program. Cuba has thus been able to occupy in recent years a sustained position among the first 50 countries worldwide and the first five Latin American countries in the specialty.

RESUMEN En el año 2006 se inició en Cuba un proyecto dedicado a acelerar la formación doctoral en el campo de las Ciencias de la Información. El Programa Doctoral en Documentación e Información Científica, desarrollado por la Universidad de Granada, España, y la Universidad de La Habana, graduó durante diez años un total de 50 doctores cubanos y dos de países latinoamericanos. El proyecto perseguía la actualización y el fortalecimiento de la actividad investigativa en el país y el aumento de la publicación de artículos en revistas científicas de amplia visibilidad internacional. El presente artículo tuvo como objetivo determinar, desde un enfoque bibliométrico, la importancia que ha tenido este programa doctoral en los niveles de productividad científica nacional y en el posicionamiento del país a nivel regional y mundial en el campo de la Bibliotecología y las Ciencias de la Información. Se demostró la mejora del posicionamiento del país en las bases de datos Web of Science y Scopus. Se identificó la proporción de estudios derivados del programa doctoral en el volumen total de la producción científica cubana sobre la especialidad generada durante el período 2006-2019. Un tercio de la producción científica nacional en ambas bases de datos fue generada por graduados de los tres grupos que conformaron el programa. De esta forma, Cuba ha podido ubicarse sostenidamente durante los últimos años entre los primeros 50 países del mundo y entre los cinco primeros países de Latinoamérica en la especialidad.

Abstract Objective: the current study aims to analyze the behavior of scientific production on three bibliometric analysis techniques: co-citation, bibliographic coupling, and terms co-occurrence. Methodology: the Web of Science is used as data source. Productivity and impact measures are used to characterize the behavior of each technique practices. Two new indices to determine the multidisciplinary scope of research are proposed, which are complemented by documentary analysis to interpret the results and establish the reference frameworks. Results: the leading authors, institutions and countries are identified, as well as the number of serial publications where the research was disseminated, and the Web of Science subject categories where they are classified. The growing evolution of the literature that uses these techniques for the representation and analysis of knowledge domains was evidenced. The technological domains predominated in the thematic production core, although in the thematic citations core there was also the presence of biomedical, economic and social environments. Conclusions: the existence of a highly productive core of institutions and countries evidences the sustained, intensive and extensive use of these techniques, given the global community recognition of their importance and validity. The proposed indicators allowed to identify the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary nature of the scientific production related to these analytical techniques. In this way, the influence of metrics and their techniques is made visible, which transcend the limits of the knowledge domain that originated them, from theoretical and meta-theoretical proposals through multiple disciplinary spaces.

Resumen Objetivo: el presente estudio tiene como objetivo analizar el comportamiento de la producción científica sobre tres técnicas de análisis bibliométrico: la co-citación, el acoplamiento bibliográfico y la co-ocurrencia de términos. Metodología: se utiliza Web of Science como fuente de datos. Se emplean medidas de productividad e impacto para caracterizar el comportamiento de la aplicación de cada técnica. Se proponen dos nuevos índices para determinar el alcance multidisciplinar de las investigaciones, y se complementan con el análisis documental para interpretar los resultados y establecer los marcos referenciales. Resultados: se identifican los autores, instituciones y países líderes, así como la cantidad de publicaciones seriadas donde se difunden las investigaciones, y las categorías temáticas del Web of Science donde éstas están clasificadas. Se evidenció la creciente evolución de la literatura que utiliza estas técnicas para la representación y análisis de dominios del conocimiento. Los dominios tecnológicos predominaron en los núcleos temáticos de producción, aunque en los núcleos temáticos de citación también hubo presencia de los entornos biomédicos, económicos y sociales. Conclusiones: la existencia de un núcleo altamente productivo de instituciones y países evidencia la sostenida aplicación intensiva y extensiva de estas técnicas, ante el reconocimiento comunitario mundial de su importancia y validez. Los indicadores propuestos permitieron identificar el carácter multidisciplinar y la naturaleza interdisciplinar de la producción científica relacionada con estas técnicas analíticas. Además, se visibiliza la influencia de las metrías y sus técnicas al trascender los límites del dominio de conocimiento que las originó, desde propuestas teóricas y meta-teóricas hacia múltiples espacios disciplinarios.

ABSTRACT The Business Process Management (BPM) implementation represents a complex task that involves multidisciplinary factors. Academics and practitioner define their own BPM cycles and guideline to address initiatives based on this paradigm. These initiatives are sometimes biased because they reach only technical instructions of BPM technologies or focus on isolated theoretical elements. The present work unifies the postures in relation to the BPM adoption applying the Systematic Literature Review method and Systematic Mapping Review method. In this sense, both academic and business perspectives are taken as a starting point to characterize this technological adoption from such aspects as: most used BPM systems, the invariant phases in the BPM cycle, the common elements of a BPM solution, the standard language for modeling, Service Oriented Architectures as a BPM complement and procedures, guideline or methodologies to develop BPM solutions.

RESUMEN La adopción de soluciones BPM es una tarea compleja que involucra aristas tanto organizacionales como relacionadas con las Tecnologías de la Información. Los académicos y profesionales de tecnologías BPM definen sus propios ciclos de vida de los procesos de negocio y las guías para afrontar iniciativas de informatización basadas en BPM. Estas iniciativas son, en ocasiones, parcializadas porque alcanzan solo instrucciones técnicas de tecnologías BPM o se centran en elementos teóricos aislados. El presente trabajo unifica las posturas en relación con la adopción de BPM aplicando los métodos de mapeo y revisión sistemáticas de la literatura. En este sentido, se toma como partida tanto fuentes académicas como empresariales para caracterizar esta adopción tecnológica desde varias aristas como: los sistemas BPM, ciclo BPM, los elementos comunes de una solución BPM, el lenguaje de modelado de procesos, Arquitecturas Orientadas a Servicios y procedimientos, guías o metodologías para desarrollar soluciones BPM.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The Cuban Journal of Pediatrics has been published continuously during 90 years. However, there are not bibliometric studies that have characterized this prestigious journal, which is an aspect of special interest for the Journal´s editorial committee. Objective: To analyze the scientific production of the Cuban Journal of Pediatrics, with the aim to establish policies for the continuous improvement of its editorial processes. Methods: A descriptive bibliometric study was carried out from 2005 to 2016, using Scopus and SciELO databases. A total of 620 published articles were retrieved. The retrieved items were introduced into an ad hoc database using EndNote X7 for normalization purposes. A battery of bibliometric indicators for data analysis was applied. The gender perspective was used to analyze authorship. Bibexcel, UCINET, NetDraw, Gephi and Microsoft Excel 2013 were used as software for data processing, analysis and visualization. Results: The most productive authors and institutions were identified. A Price index of 0.41 was calculated, which indicates low updating of the sources used for research development. Original and review articles were predominant, as well as Spanish as the publication language. National and international collaboration networks were studied. Conclusions: Low international contribution in journal contents, and obsolescence of references were the main negative aspects identified. Bibliometric characterization allowed knowing strategic factors for a future editorial policy of the journal.

RESUMEN Introducción: La Revista Cubana de Pediatría se ha publicado ininterrumpidamente durante 90 años, sin embargo, no existen estudios bibliométricos que hayan caracterizado su gestión, aspecto que resulta de especial interés para su dirección editorial. Objetivo: Analizar el estado de la producción científica de la Revista Cubana de Pediatría, con vistas al establecimiento de políticas para la mejora continua de sus procesos editoriales. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio bibliométrico descriptivo durante el período 2005-2016. Se utilizaron las bases de datos Scopus y SciELO. Se recuperaron 620 artículos publicados, que se introdujeron en una base de datos ad hoc en EndNote X7, para su normalización. Se aplicó a una batería de indicadores bibliométricos para el análisis de los datos. Se utilizó una perspectiva de género para el análisis de la autoría. Se emplearon los software Bibexcel, UCINET, NetDraw, Gephi y Microsoft Excel 2013 para el procesamiento, análisis y visualización de los datos. Resultados: Se identificaron los autores e instituciones más productivos. Se calculó un índice de Price de 0.41, lo que denota baja actualización de las fuentes utilizadas para el desarrollo de las investigaciones. Predominaron los artículos originales y de revisión, así como el español como lengua de publicación. Se estudiaron las redes de colaboración nacional e internacional, y temáticas. Conclusiones: La escasa contribución internacional en los contenidos y la baja actualidad de las referencias, son los principales aspectos negativos identificados. La caracterización bibliométrica permite conocer factores estratégicos para la futura política editorial de la revista.

INTRODUCTION The steadily increasing prevalence of diabetes globally has captured researchers’ attention. Cuban production of scientific articles on diabetes has not been studied from a bibliometric perspective. OBJECTIVE Characterize the production and impact of research and review articles on diabetes by Cuban authors in journals listed in the Scopus bibliographic database, as well as related collaboration among Cuban institutions and between Cuban and non-Cuban institutions. METHODS A bibliometric analysis was conducted using 2000–2017 data from the Scopus database. The following search strategy was used: descriptor (diabetes), country (Cuba), publication source (journal), article type (original research, review article). Bibliographic indicators of production, visibility, impact and collaboration were examined. RESULTS Cuba contributed 3.2% of Latin American production and 0.1% of global production related to diabetes. Within Cuba’s scientific production (610 articles, 538 original research and 72 review), 85.9% had a Cuban corresponding author (Cuban leadership). In articles with international collaboration (22.9%), however, most (67.9%) had non-Cuban corresponding authors. A total of 47% (287) were articles involving a single institution. Only 11.1% were published in top-ranked journals, and 14.4% were cited >10 times. Cubans were lead authors on 0.3% of the most frequently cited (top 10%) articles on diabetes in Scopus. A total of 38.4% of this production appeared in low-impact journals and 57.9% in Cuban journals. Articles published in English accounted for 30% of total and obtained higher impact in terms of citations than articles in Spanish. The strongest networks for scientific collaboration were those that connected Cuban and US researchers. CONCLUSIONS Cuban scientists conduct research on diabetes, but their work is not highly visible in the peer-reviewed literature, particularly in top-ranked journals. The problem is not simply one of publishing more, but of knowing how and where to publish. It is urgent that Cuban universities training health professionals at all levels include instruction on scientific writing.

ABSTRACT In order to provide information on the development status of the Macrobrachium genus study in Latin America, the results of the scientometric analysis of 161 documents published between 1976 and 2016 in journals of the region, managed from the PERIODICA database, are presented. The current status of the genus Macrobrachium is described in the above geographical area. Results are presented on the years of generation of articles, species studied, main themes treated, journals, most representative authors, countries and language. The most productive countries are Brazil and Mexico. The contents were written in Portuguese as the preponderant language, followed by Spanish. The main topics covered are culture, ecology, food-nutrition, physiology and reproduction, and the least discussed were biology, pathology, food technology, genetics, molecular biology and behavior. The most studied species are M. rosenbergii, M. acanthurus, M. carcinus and M. amazonicum. The most representative authors are V.L. Lobao, W.C. Valenti, J.V. Lombardi and C. Graziani.

ABSTRACT The freshwater shrimp genus Macrobrachium is highly diverse, distributed in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, and of considerable commercial importance in many countries. Here we present the results of an analysis of the scientific production regarding Macrobrachium published between 1980 and 2016 in the database Web of Science. The evaluated indicators were key words and authors producing the scientific literature about this genus. Concept maps and cluster analysis techniques were used to display the relationships between them. The results of the study visualize the temporal development of scientific knowledge of the genus Macrobrachium and describe the development of authorship networks during 36 years study period. Moreover, the results of the analysis show emerging research trends in the field of Macrobrachium studies.

ABSTRACT One of the most important domains in aquaculture is Macrobrachium, since it represents one of the most cultured crustacean genus worldwide. Description of the authors that study and publish on the subject constitutes a solid contribution to the knowledge of this genus. Indicators of productivity, visibility, relevance, sex and co-authorship of the authors were collected from the Scopus database for the period 1980-2016 to describe the Macrobrachium domain. Conceptual mapping techniques were used to visualize co-author relationships. The greatest amount of contributions to knowledge of the genus Macrobrachium was shown to come from researchers in China, Brazil, USA and India. Only seven women are among the most productive and relevant authors. Multiple co-author networks exist in which the most relevant researchers are the center. Many networks appear to be closed groups with little interaction between external groups or researchers.

Knowledge domains are strongly related to the communities integrated for their configuration and development. Bibliometrics is one of the more objective ways to the analysis and characterization of these communities. The current study characterized the behavior of the scientific community specialized on alopecia areata during the period 2001-2014, through a bibliometric perspective. The Web of Science was used as information source. A battery of bibliometric indicators was used to determine productivity, influence and performance of authors, as well as to characterize their most relevant researches. Annual productivity was determined. An exponential growth of the scientific output on alopecia areata was observed. The fifteen most productive journals were identified, which produced around 50 % of the total amount of articles. The most visible author´s core was identified. The value of H index was demonstrated, not only as indicator to determine scientific performance, but also as a measure to identify leadership in scientific knowledge domains, especially in the field of Medical Sciences.

Los dominios del conocimiento están estrechamente relacionados con las comunidades que se integran para su configuración y desarrollo. La bibliometría constituye una de las formas más objetivas para el análisis y caracterización de estas comunidades. El presente estudio caracterizó, a través de la perspectiva bibliométrica, el comportamiento de la comunidad científica especializada en alopecia areata durante el período 2001-2014. Se utilizó el Web of Science como fuente de información. Se empleó una batería de indicadores bibliométricos para determinar la productividad, influencia y rendimiento de los autores, así como para caracterizar sus investigaciones más relevantes. Se determinó la productividad anual, que evidenció durante el período un crecimiento exponencial de la producción científica sobre Alopecia Areata. Se identificaron las 15 revistas más productivas, que generaron alrededor del 50 % del volumen total de artículos. Se identificó el núcleo de autores más visibles del dominio. Se demostró la utilidad del índice H no solo como indicador para determinar el rendimiento científico, sino también como medida para la identificación del liderazgo en dominios del conocimiento científico, especialmente en el campo de las Ciencias Médicas.

The scientific interest in the genus Macrobrachium was not only from a biological aspect, but also from economic aspect. This paper analyzed the patents identified in several databases using the keyword Macrobrachium. Patents were selected when a species of Macrobrachium was mentioned in main title. The total number of identified patents was 131, of which Chinese authors and institutions have produced more than 90%. Topics addressed refer to culture technologies (41%), nutrition and feeding (26%), reproduction technologies (19%) and pathological diagnosis and treatments (14%). Patents are mainly directed for M. rosenbergii (71%), M. nipponense (28%) and M. superbum (1%). Until now, it has not been attempts to generate patents to American continent species.

El interés científico por las especies del género Macrobrachium no ha sido solo desde el aspecto biológico, sino también económico. El presente trabajo analiza las patentes detectadas en diversas bases de datos utilizando la palabra clave "Macrobrachium". Se incluyeron las patentes que mencionaran en el título principal a alguna especie de Macrobrachium. Se encontraron 131 patentes, de las cuales instituciones y autores chinos han producido más del 90%. Las temáticas abordadas se refieren a las tecnologías de cultivo (41%), nutrición y alimentación (26%), tecnologías de reproducción (19%), y diagnóstico patológico y tratamientos (14%). Las especies a las que son dirigidas las patentes son M. rosenbergii (71%), M. nipponense (28%) y M. superbum (1%). No se ha publicado ninguna patente para especies del continente americano.

This study revealed that the scientific interest in the genus Macrobrachium was not restricted to a biological point of view, but included also social and economic aspects. Many species of the genus are subject of traditional fisheries and culture worldwide. Several research groups across the globe have developed projects in various subject areas on commercial or non-commercial native species of this genus. This investigation aimed to contribute to the development of the genus Macrobrachium research through a scientometric study. The study was based on publications (1980 to 2013) registered in the following databases: Biological Abstracts, ISI Web of Science, SciELO Citation Index, BioOne, Science Direct, Scopus, and Redalyc. A total of 2165 publications on Macrobrachium in the last 33 years were included in this analysis. The themes that yielded most posts were related to culture, nutrition/feeding, and genetics with almost 60% of the total. Publications concerning M. rosenbergii represented more than 60% of the total with the remaining 40% encompassing 22 other species. Analysis performed by geographical regions evidenced that Latin America produced 23% of the publications, South Asia 22%, and East Asia 16%. Brazil generated 65% of the percentage mentioned for the Latin American region. It is necessary to strengthen research on topics of basic biology, especially those of native species. This will allow rapid progress in the generation of production technologies sustained by a solid biological knowledge base.

El interés científico por las especies del género Macrobrachium no ha sido sólo desde el punto de vista biológico, sino también económico y social. Muchas de sus especies son objeto de pesquerías tradicionales y cultivo. Diversos grupos de investigación del mundo han realizado trabajos sobre temáticas del conocimiento de especies nativas comerciales o no-comerciales. El presente trabajo pretende contribuir al desarrollo de la investigación del género Macrobrachium mediante análisis cienciométrico. Este estudio se basó en las publicaciones registradas en las siguientes bases de datos desde 1980 a 2013: Biological Abstracts, ISI Web of Science, SciELO Citation Index, BioOne, Science Direct, Scopus y Redalyc. El número total de publicaciones sobre Macrobrachium en los 33 años analizados fue de 2165. Las temáticas que más publicaciones mostraron (60% del total registrado) fueron las relacionadas con el cultivo, nutrición/alimentación y genética. Solo de M. rosenbergii se ha publicado más del 60% del total, el restante 39% de las publicaciones corresponde a 22 especies. El análisis por regiones geográficas puso en evidencia que Latinoamérica genera el 23%, Asia del Sur 22% y Asia Oriental 16% de los trabajos publicados. Sólo Brasil genera el 65% del total de Latinoamérica. Es necesario reforzar la investigación dirigida a temáticas de biología básica sobre todo en las especies nativas. Esto permitirá avanzar más rápidamente en la generación de tecnologías de producción sustentadas en una base sólida de conocimiento biológico.

Bibliometrics is frequently used to analyze the structural evolution of research fields, especially in biomedical areas. The present paper provides a macrostructure for scientific research on vitiligo conducted in the last fifty years using bibliometric methods. The data were retrieved from Scopus. A total 6 109 papers related to vitiligo were processed. An analysis was conducted of specialized terms based on the structure of the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) thesaurus of the US National Library of Medicine. A structural approach was developed using term co-occurrence analysis. Hierarchical cluster analysis was used to identify the macrostructure, applying the CONCOR (CONvergence of iterated CORrelations) algorithm. Global scientific production on vitiligo was found to have increased exponentially in the last fifty years. Structural analysis revealed eight research areas divided in two blocks. On the one hand, an experimental block comprising studies on vitiligo, its relationships with cancer and other autoimmune diseases, its pathophysiology and pathogenesis; and on the other, a block including clinical studies covering various therapeutic approaches as well as the incidence and prevalence of the disease. The methodology applied constitutes a valid tool for the description and classification of biomedical knowledge domains. It also makes it possible to obtain a macrostructure which may be validated through bibliographic reviews.

La bibliometría se usa frecuentemente para analizar la evolución estructural de campos de investigación, especialmente en áreas biomédicas. El presente trabajo ofrece una macroestructura de la investigación científica sobre vitiligo durante los últimos 50 años a partir de métodos bibliométricos. Los datos fueron recuperados de Scopus. Un total de 6 109 artículos relacionados con el vitiligo fueron procesados. Fueron analizados los términos especializados basados en la estructura del tesauro Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) de la Biblioteca Nacional de Medicina de los Estados Unidos. Se desarrolló un enfoque estructural a partir del análisis de la co-ocurrencia de términos. Se utilizó el análisis de agrupamientos jerárquicos para identificar la macroestructura, a partir de la aplicación del algoritmo CONCOR (CONvergencia de CORrelaciones iteradas). La producción científica mundial sobre vitiligo mostró un crecimiento exponencial durante los últimos 50 años. El análisis estructural reveló ocho áreas de investigación divididas en dos bloques temáticos. En primer lugar, un bloque experimental que agrupa los estudios sobre el vitiligo, sus relaciones con el cáncer y otras enfermedades autoinmunes, su patofisiología y su patogénesis; y en segundo lugar, un bloque de estudios clínicos que agrupa diferentes enfoques terapéuticos, así como la incidencia y prevalencia de la enfermedad. La metodología aplicada ofrece una herramienta válida para la descripción y clasificación de dominios del conocimiento biomédicos. Además, permite obtener una macroestructura que puede ser validada a partir de revisiones bibliográficas.

The scientific output of research sectors involved in Cuban R&D activities during the period 2003-2007, using Scopus as data source, was analyzed. Quantitative and qualitative dimension of the scientific production was described through a set of bibliometric indicators. The most productive and visible sectors were identified. The evolution of the total scientific output by sector, and the behavior of the three most important sectors were studied. Inter-sector relationships were visualized with the aim to analyze the national scientific macro-structure. The growth of Higher Education and Health Sector determined the nation's growth during this period. Despite a positive evolution of the Cuban scientific output, a weak linkage between universities and institutions of science and technological innovation, and also scarce relationships between scientific research centers and health institutions, were observed. Low indices of international collaboration in Health Sector, and deficient links between R&D units of enterprises and institutions belonging to Higher Education and Science and Technology, were also identified.

Se analizó la producción científica de los sectores involucrados en las actividades de I+D desarrolladas en Cuba durante el período 2003-2007, con el uso de Scopus como fuente de datos. Las dimensiones cuantitativa y cualitativa de la producción científica fueron caracterizadas a partir de una batería de indicadores bibliométricos. Fueron identificados los sectores más productivos y visibles. Se estudió la evolución de la producción total por sectores y el comportamiento de los tres sectores más importantes. Las relaciones intersectoriales fueron visualizadas con el fin de analizar la macroestructura de la ciencia nacional. El desarrollo de la Educación Superior y el sector Salud determinaron la evolución de la nación durante el período. A pesar de la positiva evolución de la producción científica cubana, fueron observados enlaces débiles entre las universidades y las entidades de ciencia e innovación tecnológica, e igualmente escasas relaciones entre centros de investigación científica e instituciones de salud. Fueron identificados, además, bajos índices de colaboración internacional en el sector Salud, y deficientes enlaces entre las unidades de I+D de las empresas y las instituciones pertenecientes a los sectores Educación Superior y Ciencia y Tecnología.

The current review, structured in two parts, identifies and describes the research articles developed by Cuban authors and institutions with the highest impact on the international scientific community during the first decade of XXI Century. The second part covered the period 2006-2010. The amount of citations was the used criteria for the identification of the most relevant papers. Scopus database and the SCImago Journal & Country Rank portal were used as information sources. The role of Cuban authors and institutions, the support of international collaboration and the visibility of the journals where the papers were published, as analytical variables for the researches characterization, were studied. Despite biomedical research was also predominant during the last five years of the decade, a group of different climate and meteorological studies, as well as important experiments in the field of high energy physics, were key research during this second stage.

La presente revisión, estructurada en dos partes, identifica y describe los artículos de investigación desarrollados con la intervención de autores e instituciones cubanas que han tenido mayor impacto sobre la comunidad científica internacional durante la primera década del siglo XXI. Esta segunda parte abarca el período 2006-2010. La cantidad de citas recibidas fue el criterio utilizado para la identificación de los trabajos más relevantes. Se utilizó la base de datos Scopus y el portal SCImago Journal & Country Rank como fuentes de información. Se tuvo en cuenta el rol de los autores e instituciones cubanas, así como el aporte de la colaboración internacional y la visibilidad de las publicaciones seriadas donde se dieron a conocer los trabajos, como variables de análisis para la caracterización de las investigaciones. A pesar de que la investigación biomédica también fue predominante durante los últimos cinco años de la década, diferentes estudios climatológicos y meteorológicos, así como importantes experimentos en el área de la física de altas energías, constituyeron investigaciones clave durante esta segunda etapa.
