ABSTRACT Regarding the Brazilian textile industry, part of the northeast region stands out as the second-largest textile manufacturing hub in the country. Despite its importance, this industrial activity has been bringing relevant environmental concerns regarding the disposal of textile effluents, especially from industrial laundries. This waste contains many chemicals and among them are various types of heavy metals. To assess environmental risks associated with heavy metals, pollutant transfer needs to be investigated. This study evaluated the retention and mobility of heavy metals Cd and Cu in alluvial soil, through soil column tests. The up-flow column percolation tests were performed using a nonreactive tracer (KBr) at a concentration of 0.3 mol L-1 and injecting a metallic solution containing Cu and Cd at 100 and 60 mg L-1, respectively. The injection flow rate was 0.75 mL min-1. The hydro-dispersive parameters were obtained by modeling the observed breakthrough curves with the convection-dispersion equation (CDE) and the two-region model, also referred to as the MIM (Mobile-IMmobile waters) model. The transport parameters were obtained from the two-site model (TSS). All elution curves were fitted to the models with the CXTFIT 2.0 program. The Two-Site Sorption Model was the best for the case studied, with R2 of 0.985 and 0.995 for Cu and Cd, respectively. The values of R were considerably higher than the unit, presenting an average of 2.138 for Cu and 1.907 for Cd. This indicates a delay of these contaminants when leaving the column, which is caused by the interaction of these chemical compounds with the soil. The values obtained for parameter D were 3.469 for Cu and 5.205 for Cd. Thus, the metals in this study present a risk of groundwater contamination for the local alluvial aquifers. The main reason for that is the physicochemical features of the soil, such as high sand content (85 %) and low OM content (2.1 %). The results also indicated greater retention and less mobility for Cu than for Cd, pointing to a greater risk for Cd.

Resumo No projeto de obras de engenharia hidráulica, a estimativa de uma precipitação de projeto é extremamente importante. A previsão de chuva depende de vários fatores, o que simplifica sua estimativa com processos estocásticos. Nesse sentido, as distribuições de Gumbel (GUM), dois parâmetros Log-Normal (LN2P), valor extremo generalizado (GEV), Fréchet com dois e três parâmetros (FRE2P e FRE3P), Weibull com dois e três parâmetros (W2P e W3P), Gamma (GAM2P) e Pareto com dois e três parâmetros (PAR2P e PAR3P) foram avaliadas quanto ao ajuste de precipitação diária máxima anual (AMDP) na cidade de Caruaru (agreste de Pernambuco). Foi utilizada uma série de AMDP, com base em dados obtidos na Agência Nacional de Águas (ANA). Para avaliar a qualidade da aderência das distribuições, foram utilizados os testes de aderência Anderson Darling (AD), Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS), Qui-quadrado de Pearson (χ2) e o coeficiente de determinação (R²). O Método da Verossimilhança apresentou uma qualidade de ajuste melhor que o Método do Momento. A distribuição GEV obteve os melhores resultados para o teste AD nos dois métodos para estimar os parâmetros. Entre os testes de adesão utilizados, o teste de AD foi considerado o mais restritivo. Para verificar a adequação dos parâmetros de qualidade às relações IDF, foi utilizado o coeficiente de desempenho Willmott. Para todas as distribuições empregadas neste estudo, os coeficientes de desempenho de Willmott apresentaram valores acima de 0,99, proporcionando um ajuste perfeito das relações IDF com coeficientes de determinação próximos de 1,0.

Abstract In the design of hydraulic engineering works, the estimation of project precipitation is fundamental. Rain forecasting depends on several factors, which makes estimating it simpler with stochastic processes. In this sense, the distributions of Gumbel (GUM), Log-Normal two-parameter (LN2P), Generalized Extreme Value (GEV), Fréchet with two and three parameters (FRE2P and FRE3P), Weibull with two and three parameters (W2P and W3P), Gamma (GAM2P), and Pareto with two and three parameters (PAR2P and PAR3P) were evaluated to the annual maximum daily precipitation (AMDP) adjustment in the city of Caruaru (Pernambuco´s Agreste). A series of AMDP was used, based on data obtained from the National Water Agency (Agência Nacional de Águas - ANA). Anderson Darling (AD), Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) and Pearson Chi-square (χ2) adherence tests, and the determination coefficient (R²) were used to assess the adherence quality of the distributions. The Likelihood Method presented a better fit quality than the Moment Method. The GEV distribution obtained the best results for the AD test in both methods to estimate the parameters. Among the adherence tests used, the AD test was considered the most restrictive. To verify the quality parameters’ fitness to the IDF relations, the Willmott performance coefficient was used. For all distributions employed in this study, Willmott performance coefficients presented values above 0.99, giving a perfect fit of IDF relations with determination coefficients close to 1.0.

Resumo O principal processo natural que se contrapõe ao Efeito Estufa é chamado de sequestro de carbono, um fenômeno que essencialmente busca estabelecer um equilíbrio dinâmico entre a emissão dos gases do efeito estufa (GEE) a partir da imobilização de seus elementos, especialmente do C e N. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo principal avaliar os estoques de C e N em solo da região semiárida do Brasil submetido a irrigação com água residual tratada de esgoto doméstico. Para isso, o estoque de carbono e nitrogênio do solo soram comparados para quatro diferentes usos: caatinga nativa aberta (ONC); irrigação com água residual tratada (TSEI); irrigação com água superficial (SWI); e agricultura de sequeiro (TRA). A hipótese levantada na pesquisa foi de que o reuso de efluentes tratados na agricultura, além de ser uma alternativa que pode mitigar a problemática de escassez hídrica da região semiárida, também é capaz de influenciar a capacidade de estocar C e N no solo devido a sua carga orgânica. Os resultados indicaram que entre os diferentes usos de solos avaliados, os estoques de C e N no solo foi maior na ONC diminuindo com o uso do solo para a agricultura. O maior acúmulo de C e N na caatinga deve-se a presença de serrapilheira, não sendo detectado, no presente estudo, influência da irrigação com efluente de esgoto tratado. Conclui-se que o aporte de resíduos de vegetação na superfície do solo vem a ser o fator de maior contribuição para a estocagem de carbono e nitrogênio nos solos estudados.

Abstract The main process that opposes the Greenhouse Effect is called “carbon sequestration”, a phenomenon that essentially seeks to establish a dynamic balance between greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the immobilization of its elements, especially C and N. This work evaluated the stocks of carbon and nitrogen in soils of the Brazilian semi-arid submitted to irrigation with treated wastewater from domestic sewage. For this purpose, the carbon and nitrogen stocks in the soil of the semi-arid region of Brazil were compared for four different uses: Open Native Caatinga (ONC); Treated Wastewater Effluent Irrigation (TSEI); Surface Water Irrigation (SWI); and Traditional Rainfed Agriculture (TRA). The hypothesis considered in this research was that the application of treated effluents in agriculture, besides being an alternative that can mitigate the problem of water scarcity of the semiarid region, is also capable of influencing the storage capacity of C and N in the soil, due to its organic load. The results indicate that among the different land uses evaluated, soil C and N stocks were highest in ONC, and decreased with the agricultural land use. The greatest accumulation of C and N in Caatinga is due to the presence of forest litter, and the influence of irrigation with treated sewage effluent was not detected in the present study. It can be concluded that the contribution of vegetation residues to the soil surface is the main factor contributing to C and N storage.

Resumo O Arranjo Produtivo Local localizado no Agreste de Pernambuco vem desenvolvendo significativamente a economia da região. Apesar da sua importância, a atividade industrial traz preocupações ambientais relevantes no que diz respeito à eliminação de efluentes têxteis, principalmente das lavanderias industriais. Esses resíduos são compostos por diversos produtos químicos e, entre eles, vários tipos de metais pesados. A avaliação do comportamento de sorção de mecanismos de transporte de contaminantes como metais pesados é essencial para avaliar o risco de contaminação de aquíferos aluviais. Este estudo avaliou a sorção de metais pesados (Cu e Cd) em um depósito de sedimento aluvial no rio Capibaribe. Experimentos cinéticos e isotérmicos permitiram as análises de sorção de Cu e Cd. A cinética de sorção mostrou uma tendência de equilíbrio após 16h para Cu e 18h para Cd e foi melhor descrita por um modelo de pseudo-segunda ordem. Os dados de isoterma foram ajustados aos modelos Linear, Freundlich e Langmuir. Os modelos linear e de Freundlich descreveram satisfatoriamente as isotermas de sorção para os dois poluentes. Os metais em estudo representam risco de contaminação das águas subterrâneas de aquíferos aluviais, principalmente devido aos atributos físico-químicos do solo, como alto teor de areia (85%), baixa MO (2,1 g kg-1) e pH alcalino (8,2 ) As condições ambientais diminuem a absorção e facilitam a mobilidade do metal, aumentando muito os riscos ambientais inerentes à lixiviação de poluentes. O Cu apresentou maior afinidade com o solo estudado em todos os ensaios realizados em comparação com os resultados dos ensaios para o Cd.

Abstract The Local Production Arrangement, located in the Pernambuco’s Agreste state, has been significantly developing the region's economy. Despite its importance, industrial activity has caused relevant environmental concerns regarding the disposal of textile effluents, especially from industrial laundries. This waste is made up of many chemicals, and among them are various types of heavy metals. The evaluation of the sorption behavior of contaminant transport mechanisms such as heavy metals is essential to assess the risk of contamination of alluvial aquifers. This study evaluated the sorption of heavy metals (Cu and Cd) in an alluvial sediment deposit in the Capibaribe River. Kinetics and isotherm experiments allowed the analyses of Cu and Cd sorption. Kinetics sorption showed an equilibrium tendency after 16 h for Cu and 18 h for Cd and was better described by a pseudo-second order model. The isotherm data were adjusted to the Linear, Freundlich and Langmuir models. Both linear and Freundlich models satisfactorily described sorption isotherms for the two pollutants. The metals in the study represent a risk of contamination of the groundwater of alluvial aquifers, mainly due to physicochemical attributes of the soil, such as high sand content (85%), low MO (2.1 g kg-1) and alkaline pH (8.2). The environmental conditions decrease absorption and facilitate metal mobility, greatly increasing the environmental risks inherent in pollutant leaching. Cu showed a higher affinity with the soil studied in all assays performed compared with the results of the tests for Cd.

RESUMO As funções de retenção de água no solo e condutividade hidráulica são indispensáveis para a caracterização e modelagem dos processos de infiltração e transferência de água na zona vadosa. No caso do semi-árido brasileiro, caracterizado pela escassez de recursos hídricos, faltam informações sobre as propriedades hidrodinâmicas do solo. Além disso, essas propriedades possuem inúmeros fatores de variabilidade, sendo essencial a caracterização de sua magnitude, bem como sua distribuição no espaço. Esta pesquisa apresenta uma análise das propriedades hidrodinâmicas de um solo sob mata nativa da Caatinga, típica do semi-árido brasileiro, observando sua distribuição espacial. Uma malha de 48 pontos foi desenvolvida em uma área de aproximadamente 875 m2, onde foi aplicada a metodologia Beerkan. As análises foram realizadas com base na aplicação do algoritmo BEST-Slope e em medidas estatísticas de posição, dispersão e aderência. Os resultados mostraram índices de variabilidade médios a altos para as propriedades hidrodinâmicas, com distribuição espacial aleatória, apesar da verificação de uma textura homogênea na área. Assim, verificou-se que a estrutura do solo foi preponderante nos processos de infiltração de água.

ABSTRACT The functions of soil water retention and hydraulic conductivity are indispensable for the characterization and modeling of the infiltration and water transfer processes in the vadose zone. In the case of the Brazilian semi-arid region, characterized by the scarcity of water resources, there is a lack of information on the hydrodynamic properties of the soil. Also, these properties have numerous factors of variability, requiring the characterization of their magnitude and distribution in space. This research presents an analysis of the infiltration process and the hydrodynamic properties of the soil under native Caatinga forest, observing its spatial distribution. This vegetation is typical of the Brazilian semi-arid region. One developed a 48-point grid in an area of approximately 875 m2, and applied on it the Beerkan methodology. The analyzes were performed based on the application of the BEST-Slope algorithm and statistical measures of the position, dispersion, and adherence tests. The results showed medium to high variability indices for the hydrodynamic properties, with random spatial distribution, despite the verification of a homogeneous texture in the area. Thus, it was found that the soil structure was predominant in the processes of water infiltration.

Resumo As águas residuais das indústrias têxteis são carregadas com corantes sintéticos. Esses efluentes geralmente não são tratados adequadamente, afetando a qualidade do solo e das águas subterrâneas, levando à contaminação ambiental. O Agreste de Pernambucano abriga um dos maiores centros têxteis do Brasil. Portanto, este trabalho tem como objetivo estudar o comportamento do corante Remazol Black B (RB5) em meios subsuperficiais nessa região. Os experimentos de cinética e sorção isotérmica permitiram avaliar a capacidade de retenção do RB5 em duas camadas de solo aluvial do leito seco do rio Capibaribe. A taxa máxima de sorção foi de 81,81 mg kg-1 e 21,7 mg kg-1 para a camada areia franco e camada areia, respectivamente. O modelo cinético de pseudo-segunda ordem descreveu mais adequadamente a cinética de sorção para ambos os solos. O comportamento das isotermas foi não-linear e o modelo de Freundlich foi o mais adequado para descrever esse processo para ambos os solos, apresentando valores de KF de 8,6407 L kg-1 para areia franco e 0,1868 L kg-1 para areia. Os parâmetros isotérmicos confirmam uma interação mais significativa do RB5 com a camada de areia franco do que com a camada de areia, indicando menor lixiviação na primeira camada, menos móvel para a contaminação por RB5. Além disso, as diferentes taxas de sorção para os dois solos indicam a importância do estudo do solo como um perfil heterogêneo.

Abstract Wastewater from textile industries is loaded with synthetic dyes. These effluents are often not adequately treated, affecting the soil and groundwater quality and leading to environmental contamination. The Agreste mesoregion of the state of Pernambuco is home to one of the largest textile centers in Brazil. This work therefore aims to study the behavior of Remazol Black B (RB5) dye in subsurface mediums in this region. The kinetics and isotherm sorption experiments allowed an evaluation of RB5 retention capacity in two layers of alluvial soil of the dry riverbed of the Capibaribe Basin. The maximum sorption rate was 81.81 mg kg-1 and 21.7 mg kg-1 for the loamy sand and sand layers, respectively. The Pseudo-second order kinetic model described more appropriately the sorption kinetics for both soils. The isotherms behavior was nonlinear, and Freundlich model was the most suitable to describe this process for both soils, presenting KF values of 8.6407 L kg-1 for loamy sand and 0.1868 L kg-1 for sand. The isotherm parameters confirm a more significant interaction of RB5 with the loamy sand layer than with the sand layer, indicating lower leaching in the first layer, which is less mobile for RB5 contamination. Furthermore, the different sorption rates for both soils indicate the importance of studying the soil as a heterogeneous profile.

RESUMO O elevado processo de urbanização tem provocado profundas alterações nos componentes do ciclo hidrológico, ocasionando diversos problemas como inundações, degradação das águas pluviais, entre outros. As técnicas de Desenvolvimento de Baixo Impacto (LID) provaram ser uma alternativa viável e eficaz na gestão das águas pluviais, reduzindo o escoamento superficial e aumentando a capacidade de infiltração e evapotranspiração das áreas urbanas. A previsão do funcionamento de uma técnica compensatória como um pavimento permeável depende das propriedades hidrodinâmicas das camadas do pavimento permeável, bem como das propriedades hidráulicas do subsolo. Os modelos baseados na solução numérica da equação de Richards têm sido os mais utilizados para a estimativa dos processos de transferência de água. O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar a influência dos parâmetros hidrodinâmicos no comportamento hidráulico de um pavimento permeável instalado na cidade de Recife-PE. O efeito de 5 parâmetros hidrodinâmicos foi analisado para um pavimento permeável altamente heterogêneo. Foi utilizado o modelo Hydrus 1-D para simular os processos de transferência de água num pavimento permeável. Inicialmente foi realizada uma análise de sensibilidade do grau de refinamento da malha para simulação dos processos de transferência no pavimento permeável. O método de superfície de resposta foi aplicado para a análise de sensibilidade aos parâmetros hidrodinâmicos. As estimativas foram realizadas para as escalas de tempo diária e horária. Como resultados, observou-se que a discretização espacial não exerceu influência nos cenários das variáveis de fluxo. O uso de uma escala de tempo diária diminuiu a influência dos eventos de maior intensidade de precipitação, subestimando a geração de escoamento superficial. A lâmina escoada apresentou maior sensibilidade aos parâmetros da camada superficial, principalmente à condutividade hidráulica saturada. A infiltração e recarga acumuladas apresentaram baixa sensibilidade à variação dos parâmetros. A estimativa da lâmina armazenada no perfil foi mais sensível aos parâmetros ‘θs’ e ‘n’ da camada de subbase. A utilização de dados de entrada climatológicos com diferentes resoluções temporais para a simulação dos processos de transferência de água na seção do pavimento permeável demonstrou que na resolução diária os parâmetros hidrodinâmicos apresentam maior influência que as variáveis climáticas. A utilizados de dados climatológicos com resolução temporal horária demonstrou que o escoamento superficial foi hipoteticamente controlado pelas variáveis meteorológicas. A análise de sensibilidade da malha e dos parâmetros pode influenciar pesquisas que busquem entender os processos de transferência de água em uma estrutura como um pavimento permeável através da equação de Richards, gerando um menor custo operacional e dando celeridade às simulações.

ABSTRACT The high urbanization process has caused profound changes in the components of the hydrological cycle, causing various problems such as flooding, rainwater degradation, among others. Low Impact Development (LID) techniques have proven to be a viable and effective alternative to stormwater management, reducing runoff, and increasing the infiltration and evapotranspiration capacity of urban areas. The operation prediction of a compensatory technique, such as permeable pavement, depends on the hydrodynamic properties of the permeable pavement layers and the subsoil properties. The numerical solutions based on the solution of Richards’ equation have been the most used to estimate water transfer processes. The objective of this work was to investigate the influence of hydrodynamic parameters on the hydraulic behavior of a permeable pavement installed in Recife-PE. The effect of 5 hydrodynamical parameters was analyzed for a highly heterogeneous permeable pavement. The Hydrus 1-D model was used to simulate water transfer processes on the permeable pavement. Initially, a sensitivity analysis of the mesh refinement degree was performed to simulate the transfer processes in the permeable pavement. The response surface method was applied to the hydrodynamic parameters to perform the sensitivity analysis. The calculations were carried out for hourly and daily time scales. As a result, it was observed that the spatial discretization had no influence on the scenarios of the flow variable. The use of a daily time resolution reduced the influence of events with higher precipitation intensity, underestimating the generation of runoff. The surface runoff showed higher sensitivity to the parameters of the superficial layer, especially to the saturated hydraulic conductivity. The cumulative infiltration and groundwater recharge showed low sensitivity when the hydrodynamic parameters of the retention curve and the saturated hydraulic conductivity varied. The volume of water stored in the profile showed higher sensitivity to the ‘θs’ and ‘n’ parameter of the subbase layer. The use of meteorological input data with different temporal resolutions for the simulation of the water transfer processes in the permeable pavement section demonstrated that the hydrodynamic parameters have a higher influence than the climatic variables in the daily resolution. The use of meteorological data with hourly temporal resolution demonstrated that runoff was hypothetically controlled by meteorological variables. The mesh and parameter sensitivity analysis can influence researches that seek to understand water transfer processes in a structure as a permeable pavement through the Richards’ equation, generating a lower operating cost and speeding up simulations.

Resumo O semiárido pernambucano é uma região que apresenta grande déficit hídrico, levando a população a explorar os recursos hídricos subterrâneos como os aquíferos aluvionares. O estado de Pernambuco também se destaca por conter o segundo maior polo de confecções têxteis do Brasil. No entanto, o lançamento direto de efluentes têxteis provenientes das indústrias da região tem intensificado os impactos negativos na conservação da água e dos solos aluvionares. O objetivo deste trabalho consiste na caracterização da sorção do corante Direct Black 22 (DB22) em solos de duas camadas de um aluvião na bacia do Capibaribe-PE. Os ensaios de Bacth (cinética e isotermas de sorção) permitiram avaliar o potencial de retenção e mobilidade desse composto nesse ambiente. A cinética de sorção foi verificada com os tempos de agitação de 0,25; 0,5; 1; 2; 4; 6; 8; 10; 12; 24; 48 e 72 horas e os dados experimentais foram ajustados aos modelos cinéticos de primeira e segunda. A isoterma ocorreu com concentrações de 1; 5; 10; 15; 20; 32,5 e 40 mg.L-1, e os dados experimentais foram ajustados ao modelo linear, de Freundlich e de Langmuir. A cinética de sorção do DB22 foi melhor descrita pelo modelo de segunda ordem e as isotermas de sorção para Camadas 1 e 2 ajustaram-se adequadamente aos modelos de Freundlich e Linear. Os teores de matéria orgânica e a capacidade de troca catiônica das camadas de solo foram propriedades que influenciaram na sorção do corante. A camada superficial privilegia fenômenos de retenção do corante enquanto que a camada subsuperficial privilegia fenômenos de mobilidade do corante.

Abstract The semiarid region of Pernambuco has a large water deficit, leading the population to explore groundwater resources such as alluvial aquifers. The state of Pernambuco also stands out for having the second-largest textile manufacturing center in Brazil. However, the direct discharge of textile effluents from the region's industries has intensified the negative impacts on water conservation and alluvial soils. This work characterized the sorption of Direct Black 22 dye (DB22) in two layers of alluvial soil in the Capibaribe-PE basin. Batch experiments (kinetics and sorption isotherms) allowed the evaluation of the retention potential and mobility of this compound in this environment. Sorption kinetics were verified for stirring times of 0.25; 0.5; 1; 2; 4; 6; 8; 10; 12; 24; 48 and 72 hours and the experimental data was adjusted to the first- and second-order kinetic models. The isotherm occurred with concentrations of 1; 5; 10; 15; 20; 32.5 and 40 mg.L-1 and experimental data was adjusted to the linear, Freundlich and Langmuir models. The sorption kinetics of DB22 was best described by the second-order model, while the Freundlich and Linear models properly fitted sorption isotherms for Layers 1 and 2. The organic matter contents and the cation-exchange capacity of the soil layers influenced the sorption of the dye. The superficial layer privileges dye retention phenomena, while in the subsurface layer dye mobility phenomena prevail.

RESUMO O descarte do rejeito dos dessanilizadores é um problema crescente sobretudo nas regiões semiáridas, sendo necessário o estudo de plantas halófitas como a Atriplex nummularia para o reuso dessas águas salinas. Dessa forma, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da interação entre níveis de teor de água solo e de salinidade da água de irrigação, nas trocas gasosas e no crescimento de Atriplex nummularia Lindl. As plantas foram cultivadas em vasos com solos sob dois níveis de umidade (50 e 100% da capacidade de campo) e irrigadas com águas salinas provenientes de diluição de rejeito de dessalinizador obtendo as seguintes condutividades elétricas (EC) de 0,39; 1,54; 2,15; 2,79; e 3,63 dS m-1. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação durante 160 dias, com o arranjo fatorial triplo de 2x5x3, em delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. Foram avaliados os parâmetros fotossintéticos, biométricos e a biomassa das plantas. A irrigação com água salina reduziu a taxa fotossintética líquida (A), a condutância estomática (gs), o rendimento quântico efetivo do fotossistema II (ΔF/Fm’), o quenching fotoquímico (qP) e a taxa de transporte de elétrons (ETR) das plantas para as duas condições de umidade do solo. Contudo, não prejudicou a eficiência do uso de água (WUE) e de carboxilação (EIC) das plantas. A taxa de crescimento das plantas e a biomassa foliar foi estimulada sob irrigação com água salina (EC ≤ 3,63 dS m-1), e quando associada a umidade de solo de 100% FC obteve ganhos de biomassa foliar > 100%.

ABSTRACT The disposal of the tailings (wastes) from desalinators is a growing problem, especially in semi-arid regions, and it is necessary to study halophytes such as Atriplex nummularia for the reuse of these saline waters. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the interaction between levels of soil water content and salinity of irrigation water, gas exchange and growth of Atriplex nummularia Lindl. The plants were cultivated in vases with soils under two moisture levels (50 and 100% of the field capacity) and irrigated with saline waters from dilution of the desalinator waste, to obtain the following electrical conductivities (EC) of 0.39; 1.54; 2.15; 2.79; and 3.63 dS m-1. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse for 160 days, with a triple factorial arrangement of 2x5x3, in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The photosynthetic, biometric and plant biomass parameters were evaluated. Irrigation with saline water reduced the net photosynthetic rate (A), stomatal conductance (gs), the effective quantum yield of photosystem II (ΔF/Fm’), photochemical quenching (qP) and the electron transport rate (ETR) of the plants for the two conditions of soil moisture. However, it did not impair the efficiencies of water use (WUE) and carboxylation (EIC) of plants. Plant growth rate and leaf biomass were stimulated under irrigation with saline water (EC ≤ 3.63 dS m-1), and when associated with soil moisture of 100% FC leaf biomass gains > 100% were obtained.

ABSTRACT The CO2 emission from the soil surface, commonly referred to as soil CO2 efflux (ECO2) or soil respiration, is the sum of processes that include root respiration and microbial activity. Measuring this evolution is important to establish sustainable land use models and to estimate global fluxes of carbon, which affect climate change. Despite its importance, few measurements have been made in areas of the semiarid Brazilian Northeast region, and most of them were made using the alkali absorption method (AA), which can underestimate ECO2. Measurements using AA were compared to measurements using the infrared gas analyzer method (IRGA) over ten months (in rainy and dry seasons), during the day and night, in areas of Caatinga (xeric shrubland and thorn forest) and pasture in the Agreste region of the state of Pernambuco. The ECO2 measurements from AA varied little from night to day and throughout the year or in the rainy and dry seasons. However, those obtained from IRGA were higher in the rainy than in the dry season, but also without significant differences from day to night. The values of both methods were similar in the dry season, but in the rainy season they were higher with the IRGA. Therefore, AA seems to have little sensitivity to seasonal variations, in contrast with measurements from the IRGA, and it may underestimate soil ECO2 when it attains higher values. This result indicates that some of the soil ECO2 values determined in areas of the Brazilian semiarid region, and consequently annual C losses, may have been underestimated.

RESUMO Para um estudo hidrogeológico adequado de camadas de aluvião no semiárido é importante conhecer bem sua geometria e suas propriedades. As formações aluviais são geralmente constituídas por processos de erosão, transporte e sedimentação, causando considerável heterogeneidade nos parâmetros hidráulicos do solo e no fluxo de água. A presente pesquisa teve como objetivo realizar uma caracterização geofísica através do Radar de Penetração no Solo – GPR no leito seco do rio Capibaribe. As mudanças nas camadas no conteúdo de água, granulometria, tipo de sedimento e orientação das camadas, o lençol freático, as estruturas sedimentares e os contatos litológicos tendem ser identificados, o que torna o método eficaz para investigação hidrogeológica. A área de estudo compreende as aluviões do leito seco do alto Capibaribe no município de Santa Cruz do Capibaribe. Os resultados mostraram que o GPR foi eficiente no imageamento da subsuperficie contribuindo para o conhecimento da geometria e da estratigrafia do aquífero do leito. No leito seco do rio, com antena de 400 MHz o sinal atingiu profundidade de 2,65 m e com antena de 200 MHz o sinal atingiu 6,00 m. A franja capilar foi identificada na profundidade de 3,0 m com o uso das antenas de 200MHz e 400MHz.

ABSTRACT For an adequate hydrogeological study of alluvial layers in the semi-arid zone, it is important to know well its geometry and its hydraulics characteristics. Alluvial formations are generally constituted by erosion, transport and sedimentation processes, causing considerable heterogeneity in soil hydraulic parameters and water flow. The present research had as objective to perform a geophysical characterization using the Ground Penetrating Radar – GPR in the dry bed of the Capibaribe river. To the extent that depositional layers exhibit changes in water content, granularity, sediment type and layer orientation, the water table as well as sedimentary structures and lithological contacts tend to be identified, making the method effective for hydrogeology research. The study area comprises alluvial dry river bed of upper Capibaribe river in the municipality of Santa Cruz do Capibaribe. The results showed that GPR was efficient in the imaging of the subsurface contributing to the knowledge of the geometry and the stratigraphy of the aquifer of the dry bed of the river. In the dry bed of the river, with 400 MHz antenna the signal reached a depth of 2.65 m, and with the antenna of 200 MHz, the signal reached a depth of 6.00 m. The capillary fringe was identified at a depth of 3.0m with the use of 200MHz and 400MHz antennas.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da instrumentação de canais radiculares utilizando sistemas reciprocantes de lima única em diferentes comprimentos de trabalho sobre o desenvolvimento de microfissuras apicais utilizando imagens de microtomografia computadorizada (micro-CT). Quarenta incisivos inferiores humanos extraídos foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em 4 grupos (n=10) de acordo com os sistemas e comprimentos de trabalho utilizados para preparar os canais radiculares: Grupo A - WaveOne Gold no forame apical (FA), Grupo B - WaveOne Gold 1 mm aquém do FA (FA-1 mm), Grupo C - Unicone (FA) e grupo D - Unicone (FA-1 mm). Escaneamentos de micro-CT foram realizados antes e após o preparo dos canais a uma resolução isotrópica de 14 μm. Em seguida, três examinadores avaliaram as imagens de secção transversal geradas para detectar microfissuras na porção apical das raízes. Microfissuras apicais foram visualizadas em 3, 1, 1 e 3 espécimes nos grupos A, B, C e D, respectivamente. Todas essas microfissuras observadas após o preparo dos canais radiculares já existiam antes da instrumentação e não foi detectada nenhuma nova microfissura apical. Para todos os grupos, o número de cortes apresentando microfissuras após o preparo dos canais radiculares foi o mesmo verificado antes do preparo dos canais. A instrumentação de canais radiculares utilizando WaveOne Gold e Unicone, independentemente do comprimento de trabalho, não foi associada à formação de microfissuras apicais.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of root canal preparation with single-file reciprocating systems at different working lengths on the development of apical microcracks using micro-computed tomographic (micro-CT) imaging. Forty extracted human mandibular incisors were randomly assigned to 4 groups (n=10) according to the systems and working length used to prepare the root canals: Group A - WaveOne Gold at apical foramen (AF), Group B - WaveOne Gold 1 mm short of the AF (AF-1 mm), Group C - Unicone (AF) and Group D - Unicone (AF-1 mm). Micro-CT scanning was performed before and after root canal preparation at an isotropic resolution of 14 µm. Then, three examiners assessed the cross-sectional images generated to detect microcracks in the apical portion of the roots. Apical microcracks were visualized in 3, 1, 1, and 3 specimens in groups A, B, C, and D, respectively. All these microcracks observed after root canal preparation already existed prior to instrumentation, and no new apical microcrack was detected. For all groups, the number of slices presenting microcracks after root canal preparation was the same as before canal preparation. Root canal preparation with WaveOne Gold and Unicone, regardless of the working length, was not associated with apical microcrack formation.

RESUMO Neossolos Regolíticos no Agreste Meridional de Pernambuco são utilizados para diversas atividades agrícolas, com destaque para a produção de feijão. Há uma variação expressiva na produção dessa cultura, possivelmente associada à presença de lamelas, que conferem comportamento hídrico distinto entre esses solos. Objetivou-se analisar as características macromorfológicas, micromorfológicas e físicas de Neossolos Regolíticos localizados no Agreste Meridional de Pernambuco, com a finalidade de se entender o comportamento hídrico desses solos. Foram coletados e analisados dois perfis de solos localizados nos municípios de Paranatama (P1 - sem lamela) e de São João (P2 - com lamela). Os resultados mostraram que nos atributos morfológicos (cor, textura, estrutura e consistência) não foram observadas diferenças expressivas entre os dois perfis de solos; os atributos físicos (teor de argila, macroporosidade, microporosidade, capacidade de campo e ponto de murcha permanente) apresentaram diferença significativa entre os horizontes dos perfis estudados; a micromorfologia indicou que a maior retenção de água no P2 é consequência da presença de zonas com empacotamento mais denso de seus componentes (empacotamento aglomerático) e expressividade das pontes de argila; e sugere-se adoção do termo “lamélico” pelo atual Sistema Brasileiro de Classificação de Solos (em 4º nível categórico) para diferenciação dos perfis estudados.

ABSTRACT Regosols in the Agreste Meridional region of Pernambuco, Brazil, are used for various agricultural activities, and prominent among them is production of common bean. An expressive variation is perceived in common bean crop yield, possibly associated with the presence of lamellae, which make for distinct water fluxes among these soils. The objective was to analyze the macro- and micromorphological, and physical characteristics of the Regosols located in the Agreste Meridional region of Pernambuco to understand the water fluxes in these soils. Two soil profiles, located in the municipalities of Paranatama (P1 - absence of lamellae) and São João (P2 - presence of lamellae) were collected and analyzed. In the morphological properties (color, texture, structure, and consistency) no significant differences between the two soil profiles were observed; the physical properties (clay content, macro- and microporosity, field capacity, and wilting point) exhibited significant differences among the horizons of the profiles studied; micromorphology indicates that greater water retention in P2 is a consequence of the presence of areas with denser packing of their components (agglomerative packing), and expressiveness of clay bridges; and we suggest adoption of the term “lamellic” within the current Brazilian System of Soil Classification (in the 4th categorical level) for differentiation of the soil profiles studied.

Para modelar o fluxo de água e o transporte de soluto em solos são necessários parâmetros hidrodinâmicos e hidrodispersivos como dados de entrada nos modelos numéricos. O experimento de infiltração axissimétrica utilizando um infiltrômetro de anel simples com um traçador conservativo (KCl) é um método simples e eficiente para determinar esses parâmetros no campo. O objetivo deste trabalho consistiu na caracterização hidrodinâmica e hidrodispersiva de um Latossolo Amarelo situado na microrregião do brejo paraibano, no município de Areia, PB, em nível de campo, por meio da infiltrometria de anel simples. Os experimentos foram realizados em uma área cultivada com feijão em uma malha de 50 x 50 m. A condutividade hidráulica saturada, Ks, e a sorvidade, S, foram estimadas pelas análises de infiltração tridimensional axissimétrica para tempos curto e longo. O soluto inerte (Cl-) foi utilizado para o cálculo da fração de água móvel, Φ, por meio da medição da concentração de soluto na camada do solo (0-15 cm) ao final do experimento de infiltração. Um modelo numérico de transferência de soluto com base no conceito de convecção-dispersão (CD) foi utilizado para definir os parâmetros (D e R) de transporte. A infiltrometria de anel simples demonstrou ser um método simples e eficiente para obtenção dos parâmetros hidrodinâmicos e hidrodispersivos. Observou-se boa concordância entre os valores medidos e calculados (v, D e R) com o modelo CD observado pelos coeficientes de determinação (r²).

To model the water flow and solute transport in soils, hydrodynamic and hydrodispersive parameters are required as input data in the mathematical models. The axisymmetric infiltration experiment using a single-ring infiltrometer with a conservative tracer (KCl) is a simple and efficient method for the determination of these parameters in the field. The objective of this study was to characterize hydrodynamic and hydrodispersive parameters of some soils in a marshy region, in Areia-PB, in the field, based on single-ring infiltration tests. The experiments were conducted in an area with common bean, in a 50 x 50 m grid. Saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) and sorptivity (S) were estimated by analysis of three- dimensional axisymmetric infiltration for short and long periods. The inert solute (Cl-) was used to calculate the mobile water fraction Φ, by measuring solute concentration in the 0-15 cm layer at the end of the infiltration experiment. A numerical model of solute transfer based on the concept of convection-dispersion (CD) was used to determine the transport parameters (D and R). Single-ring infiltrometry proved to be a simple and efficient method to obtain the hydrodynamic and hydrodispersive parameters. A good agreement was observed between measured and calculated values (v, D and R) with the model CD, based on the coefficients of determination (r²).

Paclobutrazol is growth regulator of plants that has low mobility in soil and therefore has accumulated. The objective of this study was to investigate the paclobutrazol biodegradation in two soils from the São Francisco River Valley. The biodegradation experiments were conducted in batch using paclobutrazol and paclobutrazol added glycerol. The experiments were performed in sterile and nonsterile conditions using a mixed culture of Pseudomonas. The concentration of paclobutrazol was determined by high performance liquid chromatography. The biodegradation reached 43% in 14 days of experiments with only paclobutrazol and 70% in 28 days of experiments that contained glycerol and paclobutrazol.
