ABSTRACT Plant species occurring in the Caatinga biome, when subjected to different water fluctuations, may have their morphophysiological and metabolic performance altered. Depending on the level of stress, the production of quality seedlings is affected. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the responses to different water availability levels in the morphophysiological and biochemical development of Croton blanchetianus Baill. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, evaluating four water regimes: 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of pot capacity, and conducted in a randomized block design, with a total 5 blocks. The variables analyzed were: branch height and branch diameter; leaf area, number of leaves, root volume; root dry mass, shoot dry mass, total dry mass and root/shoot ratio; relative water content, proline, total soluble proteins, malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, and photo synthetic pigments (chlorophyll ɑ, chlorophyll b, and carotenoids). The species Croton blanchetianus Baill. shows drought tolerance mechanisms, demonstrated by the reductions of growth, leaf area, dry mass of seedlings and photo synthetic pigments. It adjusts osmotically with increments in the production of proline, which acts in osmoprotection when there is water deficit, and in the production of proteins under the lower and higher water regime. RESUMO Espécies vegetais de ocorrência no bioma Caatinga quando submetidas a diferentes flutuações hídricas podem ter seu desempenho morfofisiológico e metabólico alterado. A depender do nível de estresse, a produção de mudas de qualidade é afetada. Logo, objetivou-se avaliar as respostas às diferentes disponibilidades hídricas no desenvolvimento morfofisiológico e bioquímico de Croton blanchetianus Baill. O experimento foi desenvolvido em casa de vegetação e foram avaliados quatro regimes hídricos: 25%, 50%, 75% e 100% da capacidade de vaso e conduzido em delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso, totalizando 5 blocos. Abstract The main objective of this study was to optimize the fermentation process using Serratia sp. BR13816, a bacterial isolate from Amazonian soil, and to evaluate the formation of nanoemulsions. Submerged fermentation was carried out with different carbon and nitrogen sources. Based on the emulsification index and surface tension results, we selected a hydrophobic (corn oil) and a hydrophilic (glycerol) carbon source, and a nitrogen one (urea). For fermentation using corn oil/urea greater emulsification indexes and lower surface tensions were verified at pH 8, 25 °C, and 48 h, whereas for glycerol/urea-supplemented medium the best conditions were attained at pH 7, 30 °C, and 96 h. These pre-selected factors (pH, temperature, and time) were used in a central composite rotatable design (CCRD) for an additional fermentation optimization of the two carbon/nitrogen mediums, corn oil/urea and glycerol/urea. The two best nutritional systems based on corn oil/urea and glycerol/urea were selected using a central composite rotatable design (CCRD). The mathematical models using the response surface methodology showed adequate adjustment. The best run of the experimental design for corn oil/urea (6.00% /0.60%) and glycerol/urea (3.00% /1.40%) systems presented surface tension values of 35.70 mN/m and 37.10 mN/m, respectively. The nanoemulsions produced by a low-energy method presented average sizes by dynamic light scattering varying from 453.1 nm to 667.3 nm when 0.1% of the oil was employed. Therefore, Serratia sp. RESUMO Efluentes salinos da piscicultura em atividades agrícolas vem crescendo, sobretudo nas regiões semiáridas. Neste sentido, objetivou-se avaliar o efluente salino de piscicultura na irrigação de Croton blanchetianus verificando as respostas fisiológicas e bioquímicas. Após o estabelecimento das plantas oriundas de estacas, iniciou-se a irrigação com o efluente, diferenciando-se os tratamentos por quatro níveis de salinidade (controle, 1,5, 2,5 e 3,5 dS m-1). O tratamento controle foi representado pela água de abastecimento (0,56 dS m-1). As variáveis avaliadas foram: crescimento, teor relativo de água, biomassa seca, níveis de proteínas, prolina, peróxido de hidrogênio, malondialdeído e os pigmentos fotossintéticos. Os ajustes fisiológicos e bioquímicos garantiram a manutenção do teor relativo de água e ajuste osmótico em meio à condição salina, sem incremento da peroxidação lipídica. Os níveis de salinidade não afetaram C. blanchetianus, indicando que não houve estresse salino, pois, os efluentes da piscicultura são ricos em matéria orgânica, proveniente da alimentação e excrementos, beneficiado o desenvolvimento da espécie. O reuso do efluente salino de piscicultura na irrigação de C. blanchetianus pode ser uma alternativa ambiental viável, evitando-se o descarte diretamente no ambiente.

ABSTRACT The use of saline effluents from fish farming in agricultural activities has been increasing, especially in semiarid regions. This study was to evaluate the use of saline effluents from fish farming for the irrigation of Croton blanchetianus and to analyze the physiological and biochemical responses. After the cuttings were planted, irrigation with the effluent began. Treatments included four salinity levels (control, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 dS m-1). The control treatment was the supply water (0.56 dS m-1). The evaluated variables were growth, relative water content, dry biomass, and levels of proteins, proline, hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, and photosynthetic pigments. Physiological and biochemical adjustments ensured the maintenance of relative water content and osmotic adjustment under saline conditions without increasing lipid peroxidation. The salinity levels did not affect C. blanchetianus, indicating the lack of saline stress. The fish farm effluents are rich in organic matter, from food, and excrement, which was beneficial for the development of C. blanchetianus. The reuse of saline effluents from fish farming for the irrigation of C. blanchetianus can be a viable environmental alternative, avoiding direct disposal into the environment.

Abstract Every activity that involves exploitation of natural resources, such as fishing, needs to be organized and conducted based on information from monitoring programs to allow continuous evaluation. With the increasing fishing pressure in Brazil, the understanding of the importance of fisheries monitoring programs and how they can inform and assist in conservation decision-making remains limited. Based on the literature on fisheries and participatory conservation, we call attention to the need to generate information on the national fisheries sector in order to improve fisheries in the country. Resumo Descrevemos o desenvolvimento inicial de Myloplus asterias e M. lobatus, duas espécies de peixes da família Serrasalmidae usando características morfológicas, merísticas e morfométricas. Esses serrasalmídeos herbívoros são fortemente pescados devido à sua importância comercial na Amazônia. Os indivíduos foram coletados entre 2016 e 2020 na zona limnética de águas abertas e em bancos de macrófitas na planície de inundação do baixo rio Amazonas. Testamos diferentes modelos de crescimento para identificar o padrão de desenvolvimento dessas espécies. Durante a ontogenia inicial, essas duas espécies podem ser diferenciadas pelo número total de miômeros; 37 a 39 em M. asterias vs. 40 a 41 em M. lobatus; pelo padrão de pigmentação e número de raios da nadadeira dorsal. Essas características são eficazes para distinguir essas espécies de outros serrasalmídeos. As relações morfométricas também foram diferentes entre as duas espécies, com distintos padrões de crescimento entre as características analisadas. Uma chave de identificação para larvas de algumas espécies simpátricas de Serrasalmidae da bacia amazônica é apresentada. Nossa expectativa é que este estudo contribua para o conhecimento da ontogenia inicial e da biologia das espécies de peixes da região Neotropical.

Abstract We described the early development of Myloplus asterias and M. lobatus, two fish species of the Serrasalmidae using morphological, meristic, and morphometric characteristics. These herbivores serrasalmids are heavily fished because of their commercial importance in the Amazon. The individuals were collected between 2016 and 2020 in the limnetic zone of open water and macrophyte stands in the Lower Amazon River floodplain. We tested different growth models to identify the development pattern of these species. During the initial ontogeny, these two species can be differentiated mainly by the myomeres total number, 37 to 39 in M. asterias vs. 40 to 41 in M. lobatus, the pigmentation pattern, and dorsal-fin ray numbers. These characteristics are effective in distinguishing these species from other serrasalmids. The morphometric relationships were also different between these two species, showing distinct patterns in growth between the analyzed features. An identification key for larvae of some sympatric Serrasalmidae species from the Amazon basin is presented. Our expectation is that this study will contribute to the knowledge of the initial ontogeny and the biology of fish species in the Neotropical region.

RESUMO Objetivo: Investigar a percepção da qualidade de vida das mães de crianças portadoras de síndrome congênita (microcefalia) associada ao Zika vírus. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo qualitativo realizado em duas etapas. A primeira foi conduzida no Hospital Universitário Materno-Infantil e a segunda na Casa de Apoio Ninar, por meio de entrevista semiestruturada com mães de crianças que apresentam a síndrome congênita associada ao Zika vírus. A amostra foi composta por 10 mulheres. Resultados: Em consonância com a análise crítica do discurso, segundo os pressupostos de Fairclough, de 2008, quatro categorias emergiram: Qualidade de Vida e Saúde - a percepção da qualidade de vida está vinculada ao significado amplo do termo saúde; Redes de Qualidade de Vida e Atenção à Saúde - caracterizadas por precariedade e fragmentação do cuidado; Qualidade de Vida e Tempo Livre - falta de tempo livre para realizar atividades da vida diária e lazer; Qualidade de Vida e Perspectivas Futuras - foi abordada a falta de perspectiva futura, uma vez que a maioria das participantes teve que parar de trabalhar e estudar para cuidar dos filhos. Conclusões: Mães de crianças com síndrome congênita associada ao vírus Zika são totalmente dedicadas ao cuidado de seus filhos. A falta de perspectivas para o futuro foi considerada em decorrência da falta de tempo para lazer e atividade da vida diária.

ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate how mothers of children with congenital syndrome (microcephaly) associated with Zika virus perceive their quality of life. Methods: This is a qualitative study carried out in two stages: at the Maternal and Child University Hospital and at Casa de Apoio Ninar through semi-structured interviews with mothers of children with congenital syndrome associated with Zika virus. Ten women comprised the sample. Results: In line with the critical discourse analysis, four categories emerged based on Fairclough’s 2008 assumptions: Quality of Life and Health - quality of life perception associated with the broad meaning of the term health; Quality of Life and Health Care Systems - characterized by care instability and fragmentation; Quality of Life and Free Time - lack of free time for activities of daily living and leisure; Quality of Life and Future Perspectives - lack of future perspective, considering that most participants had to stop working and studying to take care of their children. Conclusions: Mothers of children with congenital syndrome associated with Zika virus are devoted to their children’s care. Their lack of prospects was considered a consequence of the lack of time for activities of daily living and leisure.

ABSTRACT This study presents 25 cases of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) that occurred in Sao Luis, Maranhao State, Northeast region, Brazil, between January 2007 and December 2018. Sociodemographic and clinical profile of patients as well as human papillomavirus (HPV) infection status were evaluated. Clinical and histopathological data were collected from the patients’ medical records. For the HPV infection analysis, DNA was extracted and subjected to amplification by a nested polymerase chain reaction. Viral genotyping was performed by automated sequencing. The median age of patients was 12.40 ± 12.6. years, and the juvenile form of the disease (68%) was the predominant form of disease. Female participants were predominant (60%), and they were from cities located in the interior of the State (60%). The most common clinical manifestation was dysphonia; recurrence was observed in most cases (56%), and tracheostomy was necessary in seven patients (26.9%). When comparing the RRP forms, patients in the juvenile-RRP group had higher recurrence rates and need of tracheostomy than those in the adult-RRP group. The viral genotyping analysis revealed that 47.8% of patients had low-risk HPVs, whereas 13.1% had high-risk HPVs, and in 39.1% of patients the viral genotype was not obtained. HPV-6 was the most prevalent type and Juvenile-RRP was more prevalent in our population. HPV was present at a high rate, and HPV-6 was the predominant genotype. This study serves as the basis for further studies to be conducted in the Brazilian population. Our findings aid the better understanding of RRP, possibly suggesting some prognostic factors associated with the disease aggressiveness.

RESUMO: Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar mecanismos fisiológicos e bioquímicos de adaptação de Hyptis suaveolens submetidas ao estresse osmótico decorrente da salinidade inoculadas com espécies de fungos micorrízicos. Sementes de H. suaveolens foram colocadas para germinar em vasos de polietileno contendo substrato associado, ou não, a FMA. Após o estabelecimento das plantas, foram iniciados os tratamentos com diferentes concentrações de sais (0,0; 35; 70 e 105 mM) e fungos (controle e dois tipos de FMA), perfazendo 12 tratamentos com três repetições. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 4 x 3, perfazendo 12 tratamentos com três repetições cada. Observou-se, através de variáveis fisiológicas e bioquímicas, que a salinidade afetou todas as variáveis analisadas e o estresse promoveu redução no conteúdo de matéria seca. Verificou-se que plantas associadas com FMA apresentaram ganho de matéria seca em relação as não associadas e incremento de respostas bioquímicas e fisiológicas das plantas colonizadas no tratamento 35mM de NaCl. No entanto, o estresse salino afeta negativamente o desenvolvimento de H. suaveolens não sendo observado, portanto, atenuação dos fungos.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological and biochemical mechanisms of adaptation of Hyptis suaveolens under osmotic stress due to salinity inoculations with a mycorrhizal fungal species. H. suaveolens seeds were germinated in polyethylene pots containing a substrate associated with or without arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). After plant formation, treatments were treated with different salt concentrations (0.0, 35, 70, and 105 mM) and fungi (control and two types of AMF), totaling 12 treatments with three replicates. The experimental design used randomized blocks in a 4 x 3 factorial scheme, totaling 12 treatments with three replicates each. Salinity affected all measured physiological and biochemical variables, and the stress reduced dry matter content. Plants associated with AMF had increased dry matter compared to non-associated plants, and there were increased biochemical and physiological responses of AMF-colonized plants in the 35 mM NaCl treatment. However, saline stress negatively affected the development of H. suaveolens; and therefore, no attenuation of fungi was observed.

RESUMO Pacus do gênero Myloplus representam um desafio taxonômico formidável, e particularmente o caso de M. asterias e M. rubripinnis, duas espécies amplamente distribuídas e comuns que abrigam uma considerável diversidade morfológica. Aplicamos aqui a tecnologia do DNA barcoding e múltiplos métodos de descoberta de espécies para encontrar possíveis espécies novas nesse grupo complexo. Registramos uma linhagem bem suportada que também é distinta morfológica e ecologicamente. Essa linhagem representa uma nova espécie que pode ser distinguida das demais congêneres por apresentar cromatóforos escuros nas escamas da linha lateral que conferem uma aparência de linha lateral preta. Ela pode ser adicionalmente diagnosticada por ter 25-29 raios ramificados na nadadeira dorsal (vs. 18-24), 89-114 escamas perfuradas do supracleitro até o final da placa hipural (vs. 56-89) e 98-120 escamas totais na linha lateral (vs. 59-97). A nova espécie é amplamente distribuída na bacia Amazônica, mas aparentemente possui preferência por habitats de água preta e clara. A preferência ecológica e o padrão de colorido escuro da linha lateral consistem em semelhanças impressionantes com o silver dólar recém descrito Metynnis melanogrammus.

ABSTRACT Pacus of the genus Myloplus represent a formidable taxonomic challenge, and particularly so for the case of M. asterias and M. rubripinnis, two widespread and common species that harbor considerable morphological diversity. Here we apply DNA barcoding and multiple species discovery methods to find candidate species in this complex group. We report on one well-supported lineage that is also morphologically and ecologically distinct. This lineage represents a new species that can be distinguished from congeners by the presence of dark chromatophores on lateral-line scales, which gives the appearance of a black lateral line. It can be further diagnosed by having 25-29 branched dorsal-fin rays (vs. 18-24), 89-114 perforated scales from the supracleithrum to the end of hypural plate (vs. 56-89), and 98-120 total lateral line scales (vs. 59-97). The new species is widely distributed in the Amazon basin, but seems to have a preference for black- and clearwater habitats. This ecological preference and black lateral line color pattern bears a striking similarity to the recently described silver dollar Metynnis melanogrammus.

RESUMO Os requisitos nutricionais das espécies florestais nativas podem influenciar a produtividade. Assim, o entendimento desses requisitos nos permite otimizar o uso de insumos e reduzir os impactos ambientais em projetos de restauração florestal. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar mudanças na ultraestrutura celular e na anatomia das lâminas foliares, bem como observar sinais visuais de deficiência de nutrientes em plantas jovens de Cariniana estrellensis (Raddi) Kuntze, uma espécie florestal amplamente utilizada em projetos de restauração ecológica. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação em blocos aleatórios com três repetições de sete tratamentos usando subtração de nutrientes (ou seja, controle [plantas cultivadas com todos os nutrientes], -N, -P, -K, -Ca, -Mg e -S). As plantas foram colhidas 135 dias após o início dos tratamentos, quando a deficiência de macronutrientes resultou em anormalidades visíveis. Foram observadas alterações na ultraestrutura celular e na estrutura dos cloroplastos, citoplasma e lamelas estromais, bem como concentrações de amido e lipídios no citoplasma, espaços intercelulares e células parenquimatosas. Alterações nas ultraestruturas celulares, lâminas foliares e sinais visuais de deficiência de nutrientes impediram o desenvolvimento de plantas jovens de C. estrellensis; portanto, projetos de restauração florestal que utilizam essa espécie em solos que requerem suplementação nutricional podem ter sucesso limitado na ausência de suporte nutricional.

ABSTRACT The nutritional requirements of native forest species can influence productivity. Thus, the understanding of these requirements enables us to optimize the use of inputs and reduce the environmental impacts inforest restoration projects. The present study aimed to evaluate changes in cellular ultrastructure and the anatomy of leaf laminae as well as observe visual signs of nutrient deficiency in young Cariniana estrellensis (Raddi) Kuntze plants, a forest species widely used in ecological restoration projects. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in random blocks with three replications of seven treatments using nutrient subtraction (I.e., control [plants grown with all nutrients], -N, -P, -K, -Ca, -Mg, and -S). The plants were harvested 135 days after the beginning of the treatments when the deficiency of the macronutrients resulted in visible abnormalities. Changes in the cell ultrastructure and structure of the chloroplasts, cytoplasm, and stromal lamellae were observed, as well as starch and lipid concentrations in the cytoplasm, intercellular spaces, and parenchymal cells. Changes in the cell ultrastructures, leaf laminae, and visual signs of nutrient deficiency hindered the development of young C. estrellensis plants; therefore, forest restoration projects that use this species in soils that require nutritional supplementation may have limited success in the absence of nutritional support.

RESUMO As relações entre o tamanho corporal do peixe e as medidas do otólito sagitta foram calculadas pela primeira vez para 15 espécies pertencentes a seis famílias de peixes demersais da costa norte do Brasil. Um total de 220 peixes foi amostrado da captura acidental realizada pelo arrasto de fundo da frota pesqueira industrial de camarão entre agosto e setembro de 2016. Todas as espécies apresentaram fortes relações entre as medidas do otólito e o comprimento total do peixe, com o coeficiente de determinação (r 2) variando entre 0,71 e 0,99. A variável mais fortemente relacionada ao comprimento total dos peixes foi o comprimento do otólito sagital (OL) com 98% da variabilidade. Essas relações representam uma ferramenta útil para estimar o comprimento e a massa de peixes predados a partir dos otólitos encontrados no conteúdo estomacal de predadores marinhos.

ABSTRACT The relationships between fish size and sagitta otolith measurements were calculated for the first time for 15 species belonging to six families from the northern Brazilian coast. A total of 220 fish were sampled from the bycatch landed by the bottom-trawl industrial shrimp-fishing fleet between August and September 2016. All species had strong relationships between otolith measurements and fish total length with the coefficient of determination (r 2) ranging between 0.71 and 0.99. The variable most strongly related to fish total length was found to be the sagittal otolith length (OL) with 98% of the variability. These relationships are a useful tool to estimate length and mass of preyed fish from otoliths found in stomach contents of marine predators.

Resumo O presente estudo fornece o primeiro registro de um isópode parasito (Artystone trysibia) em Caquetaia spectabilis, um ciclídeo da Amazônia coletado no estado do Amapá, norte do Brasil. Em maio de 2018, espécimes de C. spectabilis foram coletados no baixo Rio Jari e 33,3% estavam parasitados por A. trysibia dentro do orifício tegumentar localizado na região ventral, entre as nadadeiras pélvicas de C. spectabilis. Nenhuma hemorragia ou lesões foram observadas no tegumento dos hospedeiros. Este estudo amplia a distribuição de A. trysibia para a Amazônia oriental.

Abstract The present study provides the first record of an isopod parasite (Artystone trysibia) on Caquetaia spectabilis, a cichlid from the eastern Amazon collected in the State of Amapá, northern Brazil. In May 2018, specimens of C. spectabilis were collected in the lower Jari River, and 33.3% were parasitized by A. trysibia on the tegument tissue between pelvic fins. No hemorrhage or injury signals were observed in the tegument of the host. This study also expanded the distribution of A. trysibia to the eastern Amazon.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Posts and core are frequently used in endodontically treated teeth with excessive loss of coronal tooth structure. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of self-adhesive cements under different pre-treatments of dentin in the resistance to extrusion of fiberglass posts. Methods: An experimental in vitro study was conducted. The randomly selected sample was 56 extracted bovine incisors with mature apices and without root curvature. Before the cementing procedure, pretreatment of dentin was performed with 11.5 % polyacrylic acid, 17 % EDTA or sodium hypochlorite. The type of failure between the post/cement/dentin was evaluated by stereomicroscope. Two hundred and sixteen bovine dentin discs were used. The disks were approximately 1 mm thick, and were obtained from 72 bovine roots restored with intraradicular retentions. Data were analyzed for better comprehension in an SPSS database for Windows version 15. Results: The highest values were found in groups G3, G4 and G5, and there was no bond strength significant difference in group G2. Conclusions: The pre-treatment had no effect on dentin bond strength, and the self-adhesive cement RelyX U100 appears to be a viable option in the cementation of fiber posts.

RESUMEN Introducción: Los postes y el núcleo se utilizan con frecuencia en los dientes tratados endodónticamente con una pérdida excesiva de la estructura dental coronal. Objetivo: Evaluar la efectividad de los cementos autoadhesivos bajo diferentes pretratamientos de dentina en la resistencia a la extrusión de postes de fibra de vidrio. Métodos: Se realizó una investigación experimental in vitro en 56 dientes de ganado seleccionados al azar con cierre apical maduro y sin curvaturas radiculares. Antes del procedimiento de cementación, se llevó a cabo el pretratamiento de la dentina con 11,5 % de ácido poliacrílico, 17 % de EDTA o hipoclorito de sodio. El estereomicroscopio evaluó el tipo de falla entre el poste / cemento / dentina. Se usaron 216 discos de dentina bovina. Los discos tenían aproximadamente 1 mm de espesor y se obtuvieron de 72 raíces bovinas restauradas con retenciones intrarradiculares. Los datos se analizaron para una mejor comprensión en una base de datos de SPSS para Windows versión 15. Resultados: Los valores más elevados fueron encontrados en los grupos G3, G4 y G5 y no fue significativa la prueba de resistencia en el grupo G2. Conclusiones: El pretratamiento no tuvo efecto sobre la fuerza de unión dentinaria, y el cemento autoadhesivo RelyX U100 parece ser una opción viable en la cementación postes de fibra.

Resumen Introducción. El cumplimiento de la meta de eliminación de la malaria en Ecuador en el 2020 exige contar con la capacidad requerida para el diagnóstico microscópico ajustado a los estándares de calidad de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) y de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) y proveer el tratamiento adecuado a los pacientes. Objetivo. Conocer la idoneidad o competencia de los microscopistas de la red pública local para el diagnóstico parasitológico de la malaria y el desempeño de los laboratorios intermedios de referencia. Materiales y métodos. Se hizo un estudio descriptivo de corte transversal a partir de la información obtenida en los talleres de evaluación de idoneidad en el diagnóstico microscópico de la red de laboratorios en las coordinaciones zonales de salud utilizando un panel de láminas para evaluar la concordancia del diagnóstico. Además, se calificó el desempeño de los laboratorios intermedios en el diagnóstico en el marco del programa de evaluación externa del desempeño. Los resultados se compararon con los obtenidos por el laboratorio supranacional de Perú. Resultados. En los 11 talleres realizados, se evaluó la idoneidad de 191 microscopistas, de los cuales 153 (80,1 %) aprobaron las pruebas. Las medianas de los indicadores fueron las siguientes: concordancia entre la detección y el resultado, 100 % (Q1- Q3: 96-100); concordancia en la especie, 100 % (Q1- Q3: 93-100); concordancia en el estadio, 93,0 % (Q1- Q3: 86-95) y concordancia en el recuento, 77 % (Q1- Q3: 71-82). En el programa de evaluación externa de desempeño, los tres laboratorios intermedios obtuvieron una concordancia del 100 % en el resultado y una del 96 % en la especie. Conclusiones. Los indicadores de competencia de la red local y de desempeño de los laboratorios intermedios alcanzaron altos estándares de calidad acordes con el proceso de entrenamiento implementado en el país.

Abstract Introduction: To reach the goal of malaria elimination in Ecuador for the year 2020, it is necessary to have a laboratory network with the capacity to perform microscopic diagnosis according to the WHO/PAHO quality standards and to provide the adequate treatment of cases. Objective: To determine the level of competence for parasitological diagnosis of the microscopists from the local public network and the performance of intermediate reference laboratories. Materials and methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study based on the information collected in workshops carried out to appraise the competence for microscopic diagnosis of the local laboratory network (zonal health coordinating offices 1 to 8) using a slide panel to evaluate diagnosis agreement, as well as the diagnostic performance of the intermediate laboratories using an external quality assessment program. The results were compared against the reference standards of the supranational laboratory in Perú. Results: We evaluated the competencies of 191 microscopists in 11 workshops and 153 (80.1%) of them were approved. The medians of the indicators were the following: concordance for parasite detection, 100% (Q1- Q3: 96-100), concordance for species identification, 100% (Q1- Q3: 93-100), and concordances for stage identification, 93.0% (Q1- Q3: 86-95) and parasite counting, 77.0% (Q1- Q3: 71-82). In the external quality assessment, the three intermediate laboratories obtained 100% in parasite detection concordance and 96% for species detection concordance. Conclusions: The results for the primary network and the performance indicators for the intermediate laboratories showed the high-quality standards of the training program implemented in the country.

Resumo O conhecimento dos efeitos da nutrição mineral sobre a fisiologia vegetal de espécies nativas é um importante auxílio para que se obtenha o sucesso desejado quando estas são usadas no reflorestamento ou na recuperação de áreas degradadas. A presente pesquisa avaliou as consequências da deficiência de macronutrientes em Cariniana estrellensis (Raddi) Kintze (jequitibá-branco) nas taxas de assimilação de gás carbônico e de transpiração e na pr_odução de biomassa desta espécie, que é amplamente utilizada na restauração florestal no Brasil. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, em blocos ao acaso, com sete tratamentos e três repetições, empregando a técnica de diagnose por subtração de macronutrientes, com um tratamento-controle no qual o jequitibá-branco foi cultivado em solução nutritiva completa, com todos os macros e micronutrientes. Os teores de nutrientes foram determinados por análise química nos diferentes órgãos do jequitibá-branco; através do analisador de gás por infravermelho portátil (Infrared Gas Analyzer - IRGA, modelo Li-cor 6400) foram determinadas as taxas de assimilação de gás carbônico e de transpiração em folhas de três partes distintas das plantas, e ao final do experimento foi realizada a determinação da produção de biomassa seca. A deficiência dos macronutrientes, de de modo geral, prejudicou as taxas de assimilação de gás carbônico e de transpiração e, por conseguinte, a produção de biomassa seca das plantas jovens de jequitibá-branco foi menor em relação ao tratamento-controle. Os resultados deste estudo sugerem que a implantação de florestas ou a recuperação de áreas degradadas por meio do reflorestamento que utilizam o jequitibá-branco certamente serão prejudicados se a complementação nutricional não for realizada quando o solo for deficiente em qualquer dos macronutrientes.

Abstract Knowledge of the mineral nutrition effects on plant physiology of native species is an important aid in order to obtain the intended success when they are used in reforestation or recovery of areas with deteriorated soils. This study investigated the macronutrient deficiency effects in Cariniana estrellensis (Raddi) Kintze, known in Brazil as “jequitibá-branco”, in carbon dioxide assimilation and transpiration rates and biomass production of this species, which is widely used in reforestations in Brazil. The experiment was carried on a greenhouse, in a randomized block design with seven treatments with three replicates, using the technique of diagnosis by subtraction of macronutrients, with a control treatment in which the Cariniana estrellensis was grown in nutrient solution with all macro and micronutrients. In different organs of “jequitibá-branco” the nutrient contents by chemical analysis were determined; using portable infrared gas analyzer (Infrared Gas Analyzer - IRGA, Li-cor Model 6400) carbon dioxide assimilation and transpiration rates were determined in leaves of three distinct parts of plants, and at the end of the experiment was obtained the dry biomass weight. The deficiency of nutrients, in general, limited the carbon dioxide assimilation and transpiration rates and therefore the production of dry biomass of “jequitibá-branco” young plants was lesser than the control treatment. The results of this study suggest that the reforestation or rehabilitation of degraded areas using the Cariniana estrellensis will certainly be severely affected if the nutritional supplementation is not performed when the soil is deficient in any macronutrient.
