RESUMO A laminite endocrinopática tem acometido um número crescente de equinos com sinais de obesidade. Em um estudo recente com fêmeas jovens (até cinco anos) da raça Campolina, demonstraram-se indícios de alterações no dígito, ainda discretas, aparentemente associadas ao aumento da adiposidade. Com a hipótese de que essa associação é mais evidente em animais em faixa etária superior, o objetivo do presente estudo foi estudar éguas adultas (acima de cinco anos) da raça Campolina com e sem obesidade, avaliando-se radiograficamente a relação espacial entre estojo córneo e falange distal. Foram utilizadas 27 éguas entre seis e 14 anos de idade, sendo analisadas variáveis de adiposidade e medidas radiográficas dos cascos dos membros torácicos de equinos com escore corporal de 5 a 7/9 (grupo controle) e de 8 a 9 (grupo obeso). Foram feitas comparações entre os grupos e correlacionaram-se as variáveis de adiposidade com variáveis casco. A distância de afundamento da falange distal foi cerca de 20% superior nas éguas obesas (12,3±2,5 contra 10,2±2,2mm no grupo controle). Esse parâmetro também correlacionou (P<0,01) com vários parâmetros de adiposidade, com destaque para o escore de condição corporal (r=0,47) e a circunferência de pescoço a 75% (r=0,42). Os resultados corroboram estudos prévios que demonstraram associação entre obesidade e indícios de separação entre falange distal e estojo córneo em equinos de raças nacionais, comprovando, assim, a utilidade da avaliação radiográfica nesses animais. Em conclusão, éguas da raça Campolina com obesidade possuem alterações evidentes na relação espacial entre estojo córneo e falange distal, que se intensificam com o aumento da idade e da adiposidade.

ABSTRACT In a recent study with young females (up to 5 years old) of the Campolina breed, there were discrete indications of alterations in the digit, apparently associated to the increase in adiposity. With the hypothesis that this association is more evident in horses in the upper age group, the objective was to study Campolina adult mares (above 5 years) with and without obesity, evaluating radiographically the spatial relationship between the horn and distal phalanx. Eighteen mares between six and fourteen years and with a body score of 5 to 7/9 (Control Group) and 8 to 9 (Obeso Group) were used. Adiposity and radiographic measurements from the forelimbs were analyzed. Comparisons were made between groups and adiposity variables were correlated with hoof variables. The sinking distance of the distal phalanx was about 20% higher in obese mares (12.3±2.5 versus 10.2±2.2mm). This parameter also correlated (P< 0.01) with several adiposity parameters, with emphasis on body score condition (r= 0.47) and neck circumference at 75% (r= 0.42). In conclusion, Campolina mares with obesity have obvious alterations in the spatial relation between the corneal and the distal phalanx, which get intense according to increases in age and adiposity.

RESUMO O NANOLIPE® é o indicador de digestibilidade LIPE® com incorporação de nano partículas que se misturam de forma mais homogênea e rápida na digesta, permitindo redução do período de adaptação e maiores taxas de recuperação daquele quando comparado com outros indicadores usados em equinos. Objetivou-se neste trabalho comparar a digestibilidade dos nutrientes de dieta em equinos obtida pelo método padrão (coleta total de fezes - CTF), estimada por dois indicadores internos (fibra em detergente ácido indigestível - FDAi; lignina Klason - LK) e por indicador externo NANOLIPE®, visando à validação deste último para uso na nutrição equina. Em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, oito éguas Mangalarga Marchador adultas (média de 380kg PV) foram usadas para avaliação dos tratamentos (CTF, FDAi, LK, NANOLIPE®). A dieta foi composta por 1,5% PV de feno de coast cross, 1,0% PV de concentrado comercial com 13% PB, dividido em dois tratos diários fornecidos às oito e às 17h, além de água e sal mineral à vontade. O experimento teve duração de 13 dias, sendo os oito iniciais para adaptação à dieta e ao manejo e os cinco finais para coleta de fezes. O NANOLIPE® foi fornecido no terceiro e quarto dias da coleta de fezes, sendo administrado uma vez por dia, por meio de cápsulas de 0,25g/animal/dia via oral. Houve diferença (P<0,05) entre os valores de produção fecal estimados pela FDAi (0,86kg MS) e LK (0,60kg MS) em comparação aos observados na CTF (2,16kg MS) e NANOLIPE® (2,17kg MS), com sub ou superestimação dos coeficientes de digestibilidade da MS, FDN, FDA, HEM, ED, MO e PB estimados pelos indicadores internos. O NANOLIPE® obteve alta taxa de recuperação (100,46%) e os coeficientes de digestibilidade de todos nutrientes foram semelhantes aos obtidos pela CTF. O indicador NANOLIPE® foi eficiente para estimativa da produção fecal e digestibilidade aparente dos nutrientes da dieta em equinos, quando fornecido por dois dias, sendo uma aplicação diária e com início da coleta de fezes, 24 horas após sua administração.

ABSTRACT NANOLIPE® is the LIPE®digestibility indicator incorporating nano particles that blend more smoothly and quickly in digesta, allowing reduction of the induction period, and higher recovery rates that compared with other indicators used in horses. The objective of this work was to compare the digestibility of the diet of nutrients in horses obtained by standard method (total collection of feces - TCF) and estimated by two internal indicators ( Klason Lignin - KL and indigestible Acid Detergent Fiber.- iADF) ) and external indicator NANOLIPE®, aiming to validate the latter for use in equine nutrition. In a randomized block design, eight Mangalarga Marchador adult mares were used to evaluate treatments (CBC, iADF, LK, NANOLIPE®). The diet was composed of 1.5% PV hay Coast Cross, 1.0% PV of commercial concentrate, divided into two daily treatment.. The trial lasted 13 days, with 8 adaptation to the diet and the handling and 5 for the experimental procedures. In the first five days of the experimental period total feces was collected and in the 3th and 4th day the animals received NANOLIPE® administered once a day through capsules of 0.25 g / animal / day orally. Using the method of TFC as standart, the Klason Lignin and iADF proved inadequate (P<0,05) and NANOLIPE® was considered efficient (P>0,05) for estimating the digestibility of nutrients in the equine species. There were differences (P <0.05) between fecal production values estimated by iADF (0.86 kg DM) and LK (0.60 kg DM) compared to those observed in CTF (2.16 kg DM) and NANOLIPE® (2.17 kg DM) with under- or overestimation of the digestibility of DM, NDF, ADF, HEM, ED, OM and CP estimated by internal indicators. The NANOLIPE® got high recovery rate (100.46%) and the digestibility coefficients of all nutrients were similar to those obtained by the CTF. The NANOLIPE® indicator was efficient to estimate fecal output and apparent digestibility of dietary nutrients in horses when provided for two days, with a daily application and start collecting feces 24 hours after administration.

A avaliação radiográfica do casco é essencial no diagnóstico e na avaliação da laminite em equinos, contudo poucos estudos têm sido feitos em raças nacionais. O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar a morfometria de imagens radiográficas obtidas do dígito de éguas Mangalarga Marchador (MM), a fim de obter um perfil de medidas indicadoras de laminite nessa população e comparar grupos sem (escore corporal 5 e 6) e com (escore corporal 7 e 8) sinais de sobrepeso. Não houve diferença significativa entre os valores para as medidas dos dois grupos (P>0,05), mas verificou-se correlação positiva entre a distância entre os planos da linha coronária e do ápice do processo extensor (afundamento da falange distal) e indicadores de deposição de gordura localizada no pescoço e na base da cauda. Os achados demonstram que a morfometria radiográfica do dígito dessa população de equinos Mangalarga Marchador difere da de raças estrangeiras. Além disso, nos animais estudados, éguas com escore corporal 7 e 8 não aparentaram estarem mais sujeitas à laminite, uma vez que não houve diferença entre a morfometria de éguas com escore inferior. Entretanto, as correlações positivas entre índices de obesidade e a distância de afundamento da falange distal indicam que éguas Mangalarga Marchador também estão sujeitas à ocorrência de laminite associada à obesidade.

The radiographic evaluation of the hoof is essential in the diagnosis and follow-up of equine laminitis; however, few studies have been conducted in Brazilian breeds. The aim was to perform the morphometry of radiographic images taken from the digit of Mangalarga Marchador in order to obtain a profile of measurements indicative of laminitis in this population. We also compared measurements form mares without (body score 5 and 6) and with (body score 7 and 8) signs of overweight. There was no significant difference between measurements from the two groups (P> 0.05), but there was significant positive correlation between founder distance and signs of adiposity in the neck and in the base of the tail. Findings from this study demonstrate that radiographic morphology of the hoof from this population of Mangalarga Marchador mares differ from standard international reference values. Furthermore, in this group of mares, those with body condition grading 7 and 8 did not seem to be more prone to develop laminitis, since there was no difference when they were compared with mares showing lower grades. However, a significant correlation among founder distance and signs of adiposity in the neck and base of tail indicate that Mangalarga Marchador mares are also prone to obesity-associated laminitis.

Foram utilizados 12 pares de úmeros obtidos de bezerros machos da raça Holandesa, com idades entre 15 e 30 dias. Os úmeros esquerdos foram mantidos íntegros, e os direitos foram fraturados de forma oblíqua em sua diáfise, na transição entre os terços médio e proximal. A redução da fratura foi feita pela aplicação intramedular de haste de polipropileno, bloqueada por dois parafusos corticais de aço inoxidável, dispostos transversalmente em cada fragmento ósseo. Seis pares de ossos foram submetidos ao teste de compressão, e seis ao teste de flexão, utilizando-se uma máquina universal de ensaios. Nos testes de compressão, as cargas médias de ruptura foram 738,3N e 473,3N, e nos testes de flexão 322,4N e 117,9N, para os ossos íntegros e fraturados, respectivamente. Comparando-se o grupo de ossos fraturados com o grupo de ossos íntegros, verificou-se que o sistema proposto foi capaz de resistir a 66,4% das cargas médias quando submetido à compressão, e a 36,6% quando submetido à flexão. Úmeros fraturados e tratados com haste intramedular de polipropileno apresentaram resistência limitada se comparados aos ossos íntegros.

A total of 12 pairs of humeri from male calves 15 to 30 days old were used. The left humeri remained unchanged and the right ones were fractured in the diaphysis between proximal and middle thirds. The fracture was fixed with a polypropylene intramedullary nail interlocked with two steel bone screws crossed along each segment. Six pairs of bones were subjected to a compression test and the others to a flexural test using a universal testing machine. In the compression tests, the mean rupture loads were 738,3N and 473,3N, and in the flexural tests they were 322,4N and 117,9N for the intact and fractured bones respectively. Fractured bones fixed with the proposed model were able to resist 66.4% of the load during compression and 36.6% during bending when in comparison to intact bones. Fractured humeri treated with polypropylene intramedullary nail showed limited resistance compared to intact ones.

Avaliou-se a ocorrência da doença infundibular (DI) e a associação entre sobremordida (SM) e ganchos dentários rostral e caudal da maxila e mandíbula. Utilizaram-se 88 equinos - 52 machos e 36 fêmeas -, entre três e 27 anos. Para os exames odontológicos, os animais foram contidos em brete e sedados com xilazina 10% a 0,5mg/kg IV e utilizaram-se abridor de boca, fotóforo elétrico e sonda odontológica de aço inox. Agruparam-se os equinos por idade. O grupo 1 foi formado por animais até nove anos; o G2 de 10 a 14 e G3 de 15 a 27 anos. Foi diagnosticada DI em (37,5%) animais, nos dentes molares e pré-molares. A incidência maior de DI foi nos dentes 109 (11,4%) e 209 (12,5%). Houve correlação positiva entre a idade e o número de dentes acometidos (r=0,26; P<0,02). A maior ocorrência de DI no grupo mais acometido (G3) foi nos dentes 108 e 208. Verificaram-se 66% de SM e 65% de ganchos. Observou-se correlação entre SM e presença total de ganchos (r=0,26, P=0,016), entre SM e ganchos rostrais maxilares e mandibulares (r=0,25,P=0,016) e ganchos rostrais maxilares(r=0,24, P=0,02). Animais com ganchos pré-molares maxilares tiveram 2,8 vezes mais chance de apresentarem SM (IC 95% = 1,1 a 7,1)

The occurrence of infundibular disease (ID) and the association between over-bite (OB) and rostral and caudal hooks on teeth of the maxilla and jaw were evaluated in 88 horses - 52 males and 36 females - aging from between 3 and 27 years old. The horses were restrained in stocks, sedated with xylazine and examined using a mouth-speculum and a stainless steel pick. The data were recorded on individual charts. The animals were grouped by age: group 1: 3 to 9, group 2: 10 to 14, and group 3: 15 to 27 years old. ID was identified on the premolar and molar teeth in 37.5% of horses. There was a positive correlation between age and number of affected teeth (r=0.26, P<0.02). The most affected teeth were the 109 (11.4%) and 209 (12.5%). The highest occurrence of ID in the most affected group (G3) was on the 108 and 208 teeth. There were 66% of OB and 65% of hooks. There was a correlation between OB and the presence of total (r=0.26, P=0.016), maxillary and mandibular (r=0.25, P=0.016), and maxillary rostral hooks (r=0.24, P=0.02). Only the association between OB and maxillary rostral hooks was significant. Animals with maxillary pre-molars hooks were 2.8 times predisposed to have OB (CI 95%=1.1 to 7.1)

Avaliou-se o efeito da suplementação com óleo de arroz sobre o peso e perfil hematológico de equinos submetidos a exercício físico moderado. Foram utilizados 14 equinos machos, com peso aproximado de 411kg, distribuídos entre o grupo tratado (GT; n=7), suplementado com óleo de arroz adicionado diariamente à dieta (0,5ml/kg/PV), e o grupo-controle (GC; n=7), tratado com óleo de soja (0,5ml/kg/PV). Foram feitas três avaliações: antes do início e aos 20 e 40 dias após o início do tratamento, as quais consistiram de determinação do peso, exame clínico e coleta de amostras de sangue dos animais, antes e após o exercício, para hematócrito, hemograma, dosagem de glicose, lactato e proteína total. Não houve diferença entre grupos e nem entre avaliações quanto às variáveis peso e proteína total. A glicose aumentou significativamente após o exercício na segunda coleta no GC e na terceira no GT. No GC, o lactato aumentou nas coletas após o exercício, enquanto no GT, os valores foram semelhantes antes e após. A suplementação com óleo de arroz na dieta foi determinante para impedir o aumento de lactato em equinos submetidos a exercício, o que pode ser relevante para aumentar o seu desempenho atlético.

The effect of the supplementation with rice oil was evaluated on the weight and hematologic profile of equines submitted moderate physical exercise. Fourteen male equines, averaging 411kg, were distributed into treated group (GT; n=7), supplemented daily with rice oil added to the diet (0.5ml/kg/BW); and control group (GC; n=7), treated with soybean oil (0.5ml/kg/BW). Three evaluations were made before the treatment, and 20 and 40 days after the beginning of the treatment, consisting of the determination of the weight, the clinical examination, and the collection of blood samples before and after the exercise for hematocrit, hemogram, glucose, lactate, and total protein determinations. There was no difference between the groups, neither between evaluations for weight nor total protein. The glucose increased significantly after the exercise in the second collection in the GC and in the third in the GT. The GC lactate increased significantly in the collections after exercise; while in the GT, the results were similar before and after treatments. The supplementation of the diet with rice oil was determinant to hinder the lactate increase in the animals submitted to exercise, what could be relevant to increase their athletic performance.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar as alterações ultraestruturais nas vilosidades do jejuno de seis equinos submetidos à distensão intraluminal com solução salina. A pressão intraluminal foi mantida em 25cm de água durante duas horas. As amostras de mucosa intestinal colhidas às: zero hora; duas horas de distensão; e duas horas e 12h de descompressão foram analisadas por meio de microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Avaliaram-se a área e o perímetro das vilosidades e sua densidade, usando-se um programa computacional de análise de imagens (Image J). A distensão luminal promoveu aumentos da área e do perímetro das vilosidades intestinais. Essa alteração ultraestrutural ocorreu somente 12h após a descompressão e considerou-se que a provável causa seria o edema promovido por aumento da permeabilidade vascular decorrente de um processo de isquemia e reperfusão da mucosa intestinal. Concluiu-se que a distensão intraluminal do jejuno equino promoveu, tardiamente, aumento das dimensões das vilosidades intestinais.

The ultra-structural alterations in the equine jejune villi caused by intraluminal distension were analyzed. Six animals had a jejunum segment distended with saline solution. The intraluminal pressure was maintained in 25cm of water for 2h. The mucosal samples collected (0h, 2h of distension, 2h and 12h of decompression) were analyzed with scan electronic microscopy (SEM). The area and the perimeter of the villi, as well as their density, were analyzed using a specific software for image analysis (Image J). The luminal distention and decompression induced an increase on villi dimensions (area and perimeter). This ultrastructural alteration occurred just 12h after decompression, possibily due to edema caused by the increase of vascular permeability resulting from ischemia and reperfusion of the intestine mucosa. The intraluminal distension of the equine jejune caused a delayed increase of the intestine villi dimensions.

A desmopatia degenerativa (DD) possui caráter sistêmico e manifesta-se por acúmulos de proteoglicanos (PG) na matriz extracelular (MEC) de tecidos que contenham colágeno. Este estudo teve o objetivo de diagnosticar equinos suspeitos de serem acometidos por DD, em um plantel de animais de raça nacional, segundo o ângulo da articulação metatarsofalangiana (AMF) e a presença de acúmulos de PG em amostras de ligamento da nuca (LN). Analisaram-se 123 equinos clinicamente sadios e somente três (2,7%) deles, segundo o ângulo AMF < 146(0), foram considerados suspeitos. Não houve diferença significativa entre os grupos. Quinze éguas foram submetidas ao exame do ângulo da AMF e à biópsia do LN, das quais sete (47,7%) foram consideradas suspeitas, segundo ângulo da AMF, enquanto seis (40%) apresentaram acúmulos de PG. Foram encontrados acúmulos de PG em três (20%) éguas não suspeitas. Um animal suspeito não apresentou alterações histológicas compatíveis de DD.

The prevalence of degenerative desmopathy (DD) was studied in equines of national breeds, according to the metatarsophalangeal joint angle (MPA) and the presence of accumulation of proteoglycans (PG) in samples of nucal ligament (NL) from live animals, according to their age. One hundred twenty three clinically healthy horses were used. Only three (2.7%), that had their angle rate MPA<146° were considered suspect, with no significant difference between groups. Fifteen mares were subjected to examination of the angle of the MPA and biopsy of NL as well had reduction of the MPA angle, and six (40%) showed accumulation of PG. Accumulation of PG was found in three (20%) not suspected mares. A suspected animal showed no histological changes compatible to DD.

Avaliaram-se as alterações histológicas do tecido laminar, obtido por biopsia, em 20 equinos portadores de laminite induzida por sobrecarga de carboidratos e tratados com ketoprofeno, fenilbutazona ou flunixin meglumine. A biopsia foi colhida dos dígitos torácicos 72 horas após a indução. Os achados histológicos foram comparados com os achados de amostras de equinos isentos de laminite. Infiltrado inflamatório neutrofílico foi observado em 80%, congestão em 50%, hemorragia em 35% e hiperplasia na túnica íntima das arteríolas das lâminas dérmicas primárias em 15% das amostras. As taxas de microtrombos e coágulos foram 15% e 20%, respectivamente. Estes achados parecem decorrer dos distúrbios circulatórios que ocasionaram edema, congestão e hiperemia, seguidos de degeneração. Em 70% das análises realizadas nos animais tratados, as lesões histológicas foram inferiores aos graus de claudicação observados. Conclui-se que a biopsia de tecido laminar digital de equinos é viável, os artefatos decorrentes da técnica de biopsia não prejudicam a análise histológica das amostras e os anti-inflamatórios não esteroidais não são capazes de evitar as lesões laminares quando administrados após o início da sintomatologia clínica de laminite.

Experimental laminitis caused by carbohydrate overload was induced in 20 healthy horses. Seventy two hours after induction, samples of the laminar tissue were obtained by biopsy from the thoracic limbs digits for histopathology. The histological findings were compared to samples from horses without laminitis. Neutrophilic infiltrate was observed in 80% of the samples, congestion in 50%, hemorrhage in 35%, and hyperplasia of the arteriolar intima layer of the primary dermal lamina in 15%. Thrombi and intravascular blood clots were observed in 15% and 20% of the samples, respectively. Apparently, these findings were due to circulatory changes that resulted in edema, congestion, and hyperemia, followed by degeneration. In 70% of analyses performed on treated horses, the histological lesions were less severe than the clinical signs of lameness. It is concluded that: (i) the biopsy technique of laminar digital tissue from horses is viable; (ii) the artifacts generated by the biopsy technique do not compromise the histological analyses; and (iii) non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs do not avoid laminar lesions when administered after the beginning of clinical signs of laminitis.

Oito eqüinos e um muar com fraturas odontomaxilares e mandibulares foram tratados com diferentes técnicas de osteossíntese modificadas, consistindo de cerclagens associadas ou não a bandas de tensão, placa de neutralização e pino intraosseo, sendo este aplicado com metodologia não encontrada na literatura consultada. Os procedimentos cirúrgicos nos eqüideos foram realizados com os animais em estação mediante contenção física, em brete, e química, com sedação ou neuroleptoanalgesia associada a bloqueios anestésicos regionais. Os animais apresentaram capacidade de mastigação e ingestão voluntária no pós-operatório imediato e recuperação óssea adequada.

Eight equines and one mule with odontomaxillaries and mandibularies fractures were treated with different osteosynthesis modified techniques, consisting of cerclages with or without tension bands, neutralization plates, and intraosseous pin applied by a methodology which was not found in the literature. The surgery procedures in equides were performed with the animals in stand position under physical contention, sedation, or neuroleptoanalgesy and regional nerve block. All animals were able to eat voluntarily in the immediate post-operatory time and had good bone recuperation.

Avaliou-se macro e microscopicamente o tecido cicatricial pós-operatório de eqüinos submetidos a duas técnicas de neurectomia digital: guilhotina (TG) e stripping (TS). Decorridos 14 meses das cirurgias, foram colhidas 32 amostras de tecido cicatricial em quatro éguas, que tiveram os membros submetidos a ambas as técnicas. À macroscopia, verificaram-se as dimensões da cicatriz do coto proximal e a distância entre os cotos proximal e distal. À microscopia, foi quantificada a proporção de tecido nervoso regenerado por meio de histomorfometria. Não houve diferença nas dimensões do tecido cicatricial, contudo a distância entre cotos foi 5,6 vezes maior na TS (P<0,001). Histologicamente, observou-se a presença de tecido conjuntivo frouxo e denso, macrófagos e fibras nervosas delgadas em ambas as técnicas cirúrgicas. Estruturas nodulares, compostas por fascículos nervosos, foram visualizadas em 56,2% (9/16) das amostras colhidas em nervos submetidos à TS. As porcentagens médias de tecido nervoso no tecido cicatricial foram de 0,31% na TG e 2,6% na TS (P<0,001). Concluiu-se que o retorno à sensibilidade nervosa deve demorar mais a ocorrer após a TS, devido à maior distância entre cotos. A maior proporção de tecido nervoso sugere que essa técnica favorece a regeneração nervosa.

The post-operative healed tissues in horses submitted to two digital neurectomy techniques, the guilhotine (GT) and the stripping (ST), were evaluated by macroscopy and microscopy. Fourteen months after surgery, 32 samples of scar tissue were collected from four mares that had the members experimentally submitted to both surgical techniques. By macroscopy, the dimensions of the scar tissue of the proximal stump and the distance between nerve stumps were taken. By microscopy, the proportion of nervous tissues in the scar tissue was quantified by histomorphometry. There were no differences between the scar tissue dimensions, but the distance between stumps was 5.6-fold greater in ST subjects. Histologically, connective tissue, macrophages, and thin nervous fibers were observed in scar tissue present in animals of both groups. Nodular structures composed by nervous fascicules were visualized in 56.2% (9/16) of the samples collected from the ST group. The mean percentage of the nervous tissue in scar tissue was 0.31% in GT samples and 2.6% in ST samples (P<0.001). After ST, a longer time to the return of the sensibility may occur due to the greater distance between stumps. However, greater proportion of nervous tissue in the scar tissue suggests that the use of this technique favors nervous regeneration.

Avaliou-se o perfil eletrocardiográfico de 60 eqüinos da raça Mangalarga Marchador, clinicamente sadios, com idades variando de um a 28 anos, sendo 39 fêmeas e 21 machos. A freqüência cardíaca tendeu a diminuir com a idade e a amplitude da onda P aumentou ao longo do crescimento do animal. Os parâmetros de duração de QRS e amplitude de S foram maiores em machos que em fêmeas.

For the electrocardiographic evaluation of Mangalarga Marchador breed horses, 60 electrocardiograms were recorded from clinically healthy equines aging from one to 28-year-old, being 39 females and 21 males. The heart rate tended to decrease with age and the amplitude of P wave increased with the growth of the animals. The duration of the QRS complex and the amplitude of S wave were greater in males than in females.

Compararam-se as dificuldades transcirúrgicas e as complicações pós-operatórias das técnicas guilhotina (TG) e stripping (TS) para a neurectomia digital em eqüinos. Sob anestesia com halotano, quatro éguas tiveram os nervos digitais de um dos membros torácicos e um dos pélvicos submetidos à TG, enquanto os nervos digitais dos membros colaterais foram submetidos à TS. Os tempos cirúrgicos médios de TG e TS foram semelhantes. O comprimento médio do fragmento do nervo removido foi três vezes maior em TS (P<0,001). Independente da técnica utilizada, houve perda total da sensibilidade nos talões de todos os membros dentro dos quatro primeiros meses da cirurgia. Após 14 meses, houve retorno da sensibilidade em 37% dos membros em TG e 18,8% em TS (P=0,06). Ao exame de palpação para identificação de neuromas dolorosos, houve episódios de sensibilidade discreta em um maior número de cotos nervosos proximais operados com TS, 53,6% contra 6,4% dos operados com TG (P=0,003). Ambas as técnicas foram satisfatórias por não apresentarem maiores complicações durante ou após a cirurgia. Considerou-se que TG apresentou menor potencial para produzir reinervação e neuromas dolorosos.

The surgical difficulties and the postoperative complications of two techniques for equine digital neurectomy, the guillotine (TG) and the stripping (TS), were evaluated. Four mares under halothane anesthesia were submitted to the TS in the digital nerves of a thoracic and a pelvic limbs, and TG in the contralateral limbs. The mean surgical times for TG and TS were similar. The mean transected nerve length was three times greater in TS (P<0.001). In both techniques, total lost of sensibility was observed in all heel bulbs during the first four months. After 14 months, sensibility returned to 37% limbs in treated by TG, and 18.8% in those treated by TS (P=0.06). Discreet painful sensation was identified by the response of digital palpation of the neuroma in a greater number of nerve stumps where TS was performed, 53.6% versus 6.4% of those operated by TG (P=0.003). No major complications were observed during or after surgery and both techniques were considered satisfactory. TG was considered with less potential to produce painful neuromas and reinnervation.

Estudaram-se os efeitos de soluções salinas isotônica e hipertônica em eqüinos hipovolêmicos sobre as concentrações séricas de sódio, cloreto e potássio e freqüências cardíaca (FC) e respiratória (FR). Quinze eqüinos machos com peso entre 390 e 475kg e idades entre quatro e 18 anos foram submetidos à retirada de sangue correspondente a 2% do peso corporal e distribuídos em três grupos de igual número: o grupo GSH recebeu solução hipertônica de NaCl a 7,5% em glicose a 5%; o GSI, solução isotônica de NaCl a 0,9%; e o GC não foi tratado. Os eletrólitos séricos foram avaliados antes (T0), após a retirada de sangue (T1) e após a infusão das soluções, entre 20 e 30 minutos (T2), entre 60 e 70 minutos (T3) e entre 120 e 130 minutos (T4). Após T0, houve elevação da FC e da FR, e as concentrações séricas de Na, Cl, K permaneceram inalteradas. Após a infusão, houve melhora das variáveis clínicas em GSI e GSH, em relação ao GC. Quanto a T3 e T4, os valores de Na em T2 do GSH foram maiores, e os de Cl e de K não se alteraram. As soluções hipertônica e isotônica são seguras na correção da hipovolemia induzida e não produzem alteração eletrolítica significativa.

The effect of isotonic and hypertonic solutions on serum levels of sodium, chloride and potassium and cardiac (CR) and respiratory rates (RR) of hypovolemic horses were studied. Fifteen horses weighting from 390 to 475kg, aging from four to 18-years-old were submitted to bleeding of 2% of body weight and divided in three groups: 7.5% NaCl hypertonic saline in 5% glucose (GSH), 0.9% NaCl isotonic saline and control group (GC). Serum electrolytes were evaluated before (T0) and after bleeding (T1) and after the administration of the solutions between 20 and 30 minutes (T2), 60 and 70 minutes (T3) and 120 and 130 minutes (T4). After T0, CR and RR increased while serum sodium, chloride, potassium were not affected. After the treatment, the clinical variables improved in GSI and GSH as compared to GC. The Na levels increased in GSH at T2 being higher than T3 and T4 while chloride and potassium concentrations did not change. The hypertonic and isotonic solutions safely corrected the hypovolemia of the horses, without altering significantly the electrolyte balance.

Em uma égua, submetida à laparotomia para correção de vólvulo do cólon maior, realizou-se enterectomia próximo ao ligamento cecocólico seguida de enteroanastomose término-terminal. Nas primeiras 24 horas do período pós-operatório, houve piora dos sinais clínicos, com ocorrência de dor, refluxo enterogástrico e agravamento do quadro de endotoxemia. Frente ao prognóstico desfavorável, optou-se pela eutanásia. Durante a necropsia, não foram constatadas falhas na enteroanastomose ou sinais de peritonite séptica. Observou-se encarceramento de uma alça de jejuno, que se apresentava justaposta à extremidade livre da prega cecocólica e comprimida entre o corpo do ceco e o cólon ventral direito remanescente, caracterizando obstrução do tipo estrangulada. Esse achado foi compatível com o agravamento do quadro clínico observado no pós-operatório. Essa ocorrência sugere a necessidade de uma adaptação na técnica de ressecção do cólon maior, de forma a reduzir o espaço cecocólico e evitar um possível encarceramento de alças de intestino delgado.

A mare subjected to laparotomy to treat a large colon volvulus had the large colon transected close to the cecocolic ligament followed by anastomosis using end-to-end technique. Despite intensive care, worsening of the clinical signs occurred during the first 24 hours after surgery including pain, enterogastric reflux and grievance of the endotoxemia symptoms. Euthanasia was performed. During necropsy, no signs of failure of the anastomosis and peritonitis were found but a strangulated segment of jejunum was observed adjacent to the cecocolic fold and compressed by the body of the cecum and the reminiscent rigth ventral colon. This finding was associated with the worsening of the clinical signs during the post-operative period. This report indicates that an adaptation in the large colon resection technique reducing the cecocolic space may be beneficial in avoiding such complication.
