RESUMO Objetivo: O presente estudo prospectivo teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos da ansiedade e de mensagens de texto de acompanhamento na percepção da dor após a instalação de aparelhos ortodônticos fixos e seu impacto na rotina dos pacientes. Métodos: A amostra deste estudo foi composta por 103 pacientes ortodônticos, 40 homens e 63 mulheres (idade média de 20,5 anos), distribuídos em dois grupos: G1 (n = 51), que incluiu pacientes controle, que não receberam comunicação pós-procedimento; e G2 (n = 52), incluindo os pacientes que receberam mensagem de texto estruturada. Na fase inicial, os pacientes responderam a um questionário para avaliar seu nível de ansiedade antes do tratamento. A dor foi avaliada por meio de escala visual analógica (EVA) de 100 mm antes da instalação dos aparelhos e em 10 períodos consecutivos predeterminados. A EVA também foi aplicada para avaliar as alterações de rotina do paciente causadas pela dor. Os resultados foram analisados usando ANOVA, Tukey, Mann-Whitney, teste t, Qui-quadrado e testes de correlação de Spearman. Todos os testes estatísticos foram realizados com nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: Níveis baixos e altos de ansiedade foram observados em 42,7% e 7,8% dos pacientes, respectivamente. Foi observada correlação estatisticamente significativa entre ansiedade e dor (p< 0,05). A intensidade média máxima da dor foi detectada no segundo dia de tratamento (G1 = 36,9mm e G2 = 26,2mm) e foi significativamente maior no G1. Quase 53% dos pacientes do G1 relataram alterações na rotina (18,8mm), enquanto no G2 o percentual atingiu 28,8% (9,9mm) (p= 0,013). Conclusões: Pacientes ansiosos relatam mais dor após a instalação de aparelhos ortodônticos. As mensagens de texto foram eficazes para reduzir os níveis de dor e diminuir os efeitos negativos na rotina diária dos pacientes.

ABSTRACT Objective: This prospective study aimed at assessing the effects of anxiety and a follow-up text message on pain perception after the installation of fixed orthodontic appliances and its impact on the patients’ routine. Methods: The sample of this study consisted of 103 orthodontic patients, 40 males and 63 females (mean age 20.5 years), distributed in two groups: G1 (n=51), including control patients that did not receive any post-procedure communication; and G2 (n=52), including patients that received a structured text message. In baseline phase, the patients completed a questionnaire to assess their level of anxiety prior to treatment. Pain was assessed by using 100-mm visual analog scale (VAS) in baseline and ten times prospectively in predetermined time points. VAS was also applied to assess the patient’s routine alterations caused by the pain. All data were analyzed using ANOVA, Tukey, Mann-Whitney, t-test, chi-square and Spearman’s correlation tests. All statistical tests were performed with significance level of 5%. Results: Low-level and high-level anxiety was observed in 42.7% and 7.8% of the patients, respectively. Statistically significant correlation was observed between anxiety and pain (p< 0.05). Maximum mean pain intensity was detected in the second treatment day (G1=36.9mm and G2=26.2mm) and was significantly higher in G1. Nearly 53% of the patients in G1 reported alterations in the routine (18.8mm), while in G2 the percentage rate reached 28.8% (9.9mm) (p=0.013). Conclusions: Anxious patients report more pain after the installation of orthodontic appliances. Text messages were effective to reduce pain levels and to decrease the negative effects on patients’ daily routine.

Abstract This retrospective study evaluated facial profile pleasantness determined by two protocols of Class II treatment. The sample comprised facial profile silhouettes obtained retrospectively from the pretreatment (T1) and posttreatment (T2) cephalograms of 60 patients (42 males and 18 females) divided into two groups. One group of 30 patients (mean age of 12.84 years) was treated with the extraction of maxillary first premolars (mean treatment time of 2.7 years), and the other group of 30 patients (mean age of 12.81 years) was treated with a mandibular advancement appliance (Forsus) (mean treatment time of 2.49 years). The facial profile silhouettes (T1 and T2) were randomly distributed in an album containing one patient per sheet. The examiners consisted of 60 orthodontists and 60 lay individuals, who analyzed the profiles in regard to facial pleasantness, using the Likert scale. A comparison between stages T1 and T2 of the two treatment protocols and between the examiners was performed by mixed-design analysis of variance at a significance level of 5%. The results demonstrated a significant difference between T1 and T2 (greater scores for T2 compared to T1), and between lay individuals and orthodontists (orthodontists assigned higher scores), but with no significant difference between the treatment protocols. Both protocols produced positive effects on the facial profile esthetics, from the standpoint of lay individuals and orthodontists.

RESUMO Objetivo: avaliar, quanto à agradabilidade facial, uma amostra de 30 indivíduos negros, de acordo com os critérios da Análise Facial Subjetiva. Métodos: fotografias frontais e de perfil de 30 indivíduos negros foram avaliadas quanto à agradabilidade facial e classificadas como esteticamente desagradáveis, aceitáveis ou agradáveis, por 50 avaliadores, sendo: 30 indivíduos da amostra, 10 ortodontistas e 10 leigos. Além de avaliar a agradabilidade facial, os avaliadores tiveram que identificar as estruturas responsáveis pela classificação como desagradável ou agradável. A concordância intraexaminador foi avaliada por meio da correlação de Spearman. Já a correlação dentro de cada categoria foi analisada por meio do coeficiente de concordância de Kendall, e a correlação entre as três categorias foi estabelecida por meio dos testes qui-quadrado e de proporção. Resultados: a maioria das fotografias frontais (53,5%) e de perfil (54,9%) foi classificada como esteticamente aceitável. As estruturas mais identificadas como esteticamente desagradáveis foram: boca, lábios e rosto, na fotografia frontal; e nariz e queixo, na fotografia de perfil. As estruturas mais identificadas como esteticamente agradáveis foram: harmonia, rosto e boca, na fotografia de frente; e harmonia e nariz, na de perfil. As avaliações realizadas pelos examinadores nos grupos amostra e leigos mostraram uma correlação estatisticamente significativa em ambas as posições. Os ortodontistas concordaram com os leigos sobre a avaliação na perspectiva frontal e discordaram sobre a de perfil, especialmente no que diz respeito às imagens consideradas esteticamente desagradáveis ou aceitáveis. Conclusões: com base nesses resultados, a avaliação da agradabilidade facial, de acordo com critérios da Análise Facial Subjetiva, provou ser aplicável e ter uma influência subjetiva. Assim, sugere-se que a opinião do paciente sobre a estética facial seja considerada no planejamento do tratamento ortodôntico.

ABSTRACT Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the facial attractiveness in 30 black individuals, according to the Subjective Facial Analysis criteria. Methods: Frontal and profile view photographs of 30 black individuals were evaluated for facial attractiveness and classified as esthetically unpleasant, acceptable, or pleasant by 50 evaluators: the 30 individuals from the sample, 10 orthodontists, and 10 laymen. Besides assessing the facial attractiveness, the evaluators had to identify the structures responsible for the classification as unpleasant and pleasant. Intraexaminer agreement was assessed by using Spearman's correlation, correlation within each category using Kendall concordance coefficient, and correlation between the 3 categories using chi-square test and proportions. Results: Most of the frontal (53. 5%) and profile view (54. 9%) photographs were classified as esthetically acceptable. The structures most identified as esthetically unpleasant were the mouth, lips, and face, in the frontal view; and nose and chin in the profile view. The structures most identified as esthetically pleasant were harmony, face, and mouth, in the frontal view; and harmony and nose in the profile view. The ratings by the examiners in the sample and laymen groups showed statistically significant correlation in both views. The orthodontists agreed with the laymen on the evaluation of the frontal view and disagreed on profile view, especially regarding whether the images were esthetically unpleasant or acceptable. Conclusions: Based on these results, the evaluation of facial attractiveness according to the Subjective Facial Analysis criteria proved to be applicable and to have a subjective influence; therefore, it is suggested that the patient's opinion regarding the facial esthetics should be considered in orthodontic treatmentplanning.

Abstract Objective The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the long-term effects of orthodontic traction on root length and alveolar bone level in impacted canines and adjacent teeth. Material and Methods Sample consisted of 16 patients (nine males and seven females), mean initial age 11 years and 8 months presenting with unilaterally maxillary impacted canines, palatally displaced, treated with the same surgical and orthodontic approach. Teeth from the impacted-canine side were assigned as Group I (GI), and contralateral teeth as control, Group II (GII). The mean age of patients at the end of orthodontic treatment was 14 years and 2 months and the mean post-treatment time was 5 years and 11 months. Both contralateral erupted maxillary canines and adjacent teeth served as control. Root length and alveolar bone level (buccal and palatal) were evaluated on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. The comparison of root length and alveolar bone level changes between groups were assessed by applying paired t-test, at a significance level of 5% (p<0.05). Results There were no statistically significant differences in root length and buccal and palatal bone levels of canines and adjacent teeth among groups. Conclusions Impacted canine treatment by closed-eruption technique associated with canine crown perforation, has a minimal effect on root length and buccal and palatal alveolar bone level in both canine and adjacent teeth, demonstrating that this treatment protocol has a good long-term prognosis.

Abstract The aim of this research was to evaluate age-related changes in the smile of Brazilian women. The sample consisted of 249 Brazilian women who had not undergone previous orthodontic treatment or facial surgery. They were divided into four groups, according to age: G1 (20-29), G2 (30-39), G3 (40-49) and G4 (50 or older). Standardized front view photographs were taken while smiling and at rest. Measurements were evaluated by ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey. The Chi-square test was applied for qualitative variables. Upper lip thickness at rest and exposure of upper incisors on smiling decreased with age. Most individuals (60.9%) exhibited a medium smile. High smiles were more often seen in G1 (45%) and less frequently in G4 (18.8%), whereas the opposite occurred with the low smile, i.e., G4 (21.9%) and G1 (6.7%). Variations among the groups were observed in the transverse exposure of the teeth on smiling. In G1 and G3, there was a balance between tooth exposures, so that the teeth were exposed as far as the premolars and/or molars. Most of the women (56.3%) in G2 exposed their teeth as far as the first molars on smiling, whereas most of those (40.6%) in G4 exposed their teeth only as far as the first premolars on smiling. As age increased, there was decreased exposure of the upper incisors, decreased upper lip thickness and lower exposure of teeth vertically and transversely.

Objetivo: o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a associação entre os padrões morfológicos faciais e tipos faciais (braquifacial, mesofacial e dolicofacial) com a Apneia Obstrutiva do Sono (AOS) em pacientes de um centro especializado em distúrbios do sono. Métodos: foram utilizadas fotografias faciais de frente, perfil e sorriso de 252 indivíduos, selecionados aleatoriamente entre pacientes que procuraram uma clínica especializada em polissonografia. Para o diagnóstico morfológico facial, a amostra foi enviada a três professores de Ortodontia treinados na classificação do padrão facial, e cada um recebeu a orientação para classificar o padrão facial da seguinte forma: 1 = Padrão I, 2 = Padrão II, 3 = Padrão III, 4 = Padrão Face Longa e 5 = Padrão Face Curta. A concordância interexaminadores foi avaliada por meio do Índice Kappa. O diagnóstico do tipo facial foi estabelecido por meio de um índice facial que leva em consideração a proporção entre a largura e altura da face. Resultados: no modelo de regressão linear múltipla, ficou evidenciado que o Padrão II teve a capacidade de agravar o índice de apneia e hipopneia (IAH) em 6,98, enquanto os pacientes do Padrão III tinham esse índice atenuado em 11,45. Para o tipo facial, os pacientes braquifaciais apresentaram um IAH médio de 22,34, enquanto o grupo classificado como dolicofacial mostrou um índice menor, de 10,52, com significância estatística. Conclusão: o desenho morfológico facial se mostrou um considerável fator de agravamento ou proteção da SAOS, onde os indivíduos Padrão II e braquifaciais tiveram IAH maiores, enquanto nos pacientes Padrão III esse índice foi reduzido.

Objective: This study aimed at assessing the relationship between facial morphological patterns (I, II, III, Long Face and Short Face) as well as facial types (brachyfacial, mesofacial and dolichofacial) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients attending a center specialized in sleep disorders. Methods: Frontal, lateral and smile photographs of 252 patients (157 men and 95 women), randomly selected from a polysomnography clinic, with mean age of 40.62 years, were evaluated. In order to obtain diagnosis of facial morphology, the sample was sent to three professors of Orthodontics trained to classify patients' face according to five patterns, as follows: 1) Pattern I; 2) Pattern II; 3) Pattern III; 4) Long facial pattern; 5) Short facial pattern. Intraexaminer agreement was assessed by means of Kappa index. The professors ranked patients' facial type based on a facial index that considers the proportion between facial width and height. Results: The multiple linear regression model evinced that, when compared to Pattern I, Pattern II had the apnea and hypopnea index (AHI) worsened in 6.98 episodes. However, when Pattern II was compared to Pattern III patients, the index for the latter was 11.45 episodes lower. As for the facial type, brachyfacial patients had a mean AHI of 22.34, while dolichofacial patients had a significantly statistical lower index of 10.52. Conclusion: Patients' facial morphology influences OSA. Pattern II and brachyfacial patients had greater AHI, while Pattern III patients showed a lower index.

The facial growth of Class III malocclusion worsens with age, in this case, the early orthopedic treatment, providing facial balance, modifying the maxillofacial growth and development. A 7.6-year old boy presented with Class III malocclusion associated with anterior crossbite; the mandible was shifted to the right and the maxilla had a transversal deficiency. Rapid maxillary expansion followed by facemask therapy was performed, to correct the anteroposterior relationship and improve the facial profile. The patient was followed for a 15-year period, after completion of the treatment, and stability was observed. Growing patients should be monitored following their treatment, so as to prevent malocclusion relapse.

Absence of the maxillary lateral incisor creates an aesthetic problem which can be managed in various ways. The condition requires careful treatment planning and consideration of the options and outcomes following either space closure or prosthetic replacement. Recent developments in restorative dentistry have warranted a re-evaluation of the approach to this clinical situation. Factors relating both to the patient and the teeth, including the presentation of malocclusion and the effect on the occlusion must be considered. The objective of this study was to describe the etiology, prevalence and alternative treatment modalities for dental agenesis and to present a clinical case of agenesis of the maxillary lateral incisors treated by the closure of excessive spaces and canine re-anatomization. A clinical case is presented to illustrate the interdisciplinary approach between orthodontics and restorative dentistry for improved esthetic results. In this report, the treatment of a girl with a Class II malocclusion of molars and canines with missing maxillary lateral incisors and convex facial profile is shown. Treatment was successfully achieved and included the space closure of the areas corresponding to the missing upper lateral incisors, through movement of the canines and the posterior teeth to mesial by fixed appliances as well as the canines transformation in the maxillary lateral incisors. This is a 14-year follow-up case report involving orthodontics and restorative dentistry in which pretreatment, posttreatment, and long-term follow-up records for the patient are presented.

INTRODUÇÃO: a Ortodontia passa, como toda ciência, por constantes evoluções tecnológicas que buscam aumentar a efetividade da abordagem terapêutica, visando a diminuição do tempo de tratamento, o aumento do conforto para os pacientes, bem como a obtenção da tão almejada, e pouco alcançada, estabilidade em longo prazo. O estágio atual de desenvolvimento tecnológico da Ortodontia representa, ao que tudo indica, uma fase de transição entre os sistemas convencionais de ligação (com módulos elásticos) e os chamados autoligáveis. As evidências científicas nem sempre consubstanciam a clara percepção clínica das vantagens desse sistema, no que diz respeito a um menor tempo de alinhamento e nivelamento, uma relativa simplificação técnica, maior conforto para os pacientes, além do aumento da capacidade de tratamento sem extrações - embora essa indicação esteja mais ligada à avaliação do padrão morfológico facial, e menos a qualquer escolha técnica. Desde um passado recente e não menos brilhante, a Ortodontia vem utilizando a individualização de braquetes para tratamentos compensatórios, buscando aumentar a efetividade da abordagem terapêutica, com menores custos biológicos e menor tempo de tratamento. OBJETIVO: o presente artigo tem como objetivo apresentar um protocolo bem definido de melhor aproveitamento dessa fase de transição tecnológica, buscando explorar o que cada sistema tem de melhor, principalmente sob a óptica da redução do tempo de tratamento e aumento da capacidade de movimentação dentária compensatória em pacientes adultos. Especificamente, serão abordadas as más oclusões de Classe III compensáveis, usando o sistema de braquetes autoligáveis onde se deseja maior capacidade de movimento expansivo e protrusivo (arcada superior) e braquetes convencionais Prescrição III Capelozza(r) onde a manutenção da forma com mínima mudança (arcada inferior) é imprescindível para a obtenção dos resultados almejados.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontics, just as any other science, has undergone advances in technology that aim at improving treatment efficacy with a view to reducing treatment time, providing patients with comfort, and achieving the expected, yet hardly attained long-term stability. The current advances in orthodontic technology seem to represent a period of transition between conventional brackets (with elastic ligatures) and self-ligating brackets systems. Scientific evidence does not always confirm the clear clinical advantages of the self-ligating system, particularly with regard to reduced time required for alignment and leveling (a relatively simple protocol), greater comfort for patients, and higher chances of performing treatment without extractions - even though the number of extractions is more closely related to patient's facial morphological pattern, regardless of the technique of choice. Orthodontics has recently and brilliantly used bracket individualization in compensatory treatment with a view to improving treatment efficacy with lower biological costs and reduced treatment time. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims at presenting a well-defined protocol employed to produce a better treatment performance during this period of technological transition. It explores the advantages of each system, particularly with regards to reduced treatment time and increased compensatory tooth movement in adult patients. It particularly addresses compensable Class III malocclusions, comparing the system of self-ligating brackets, with which greater expansive and protrusive tooth movement (maxillary arch) is expected, with conventional brackets Capelozza Prescription III, with which maintaining the original form of the arch (mandibular arch) with as little changes as possible is key to yield the desired results.

OBJETIVO: avaliar cefalometricamente a estabilidade das alterações dentoesqueléticas e tegumentares, no protocolo de tratamento com o aparelho removível com grade palatina associado à mentoneira, em jovens portadores de mordida aberta anterior tratados por 12 meses, comparando-os com um grupo de jovens portadores de má oclusão semelhante que não foram submetidos ao tratamento ortodôntico. MÉTODOS: avaliou-se um total de 76 telerradiografias em norma lateral de 38 jovens. Dois grupos compuseram a amostra: o Grupo 1 (Controle), composto por 19 jovens (idade média de 9,10 anos) que não receberam qualquer tratamento para a correção de sua má oclusão; e o Grupo 2 (Tratado), composto por 19 jovens (idade média de 9,78 anos) que receberam o protocolo de tratamento durante 12 meses. Verificou-se a estabilidade do tratamento da má oclusão durante aproximadamente 15 meses após a remoção dos aparelhos. Os dados obtidos nas medidas cefalométricas (diferenças das médias das alterações) para os dois grupos foram computados pelo teste t de Student não pareado. RESULTADOS: os resultados mostraram que os componentes esquelético e tegumentar não apresentaram alterações significativas. O overbite, overjet e o posicionamento dos dentes superiores mantiveram-se estáveis. Os incisivos inferiores vestibularizaram e protruíram no Grupo Tratado, enquanto o Grupo Controle apresentou maior extrusão desses dentes. Os molares inferiores também extruíram mais significativamente no Grupo controle. CONCLUSÃO: pode-se concluir que o protocolo de tratamento da mordida aberta anterior utilizando aparelho removível com grade palatina associado à mentoneira mostrou estabilidade de aproximadamente 95%, ressaltando a grande importância desse tratamento na dentição mista.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this prospective study was to cephalometrically analyze the stability of dentoalveolar and skeletal changes produced by a removable appliance with palatal crib associated to high-pull chincup in individuals with anterior open bite treated for 12 months, and compare them to individuals with similar malocclusion and age, not submitted to orthodontic treatment, also followed for the same period. METHODS: Nineteen children with a mean age of 9.78 years old treated for 12 months with a removable appliance with palatal crib associated with chincup therapy were evaluated after 15 months (post-treatment period) and compared with a control group of 19 subjects with mean age of 9.10 years with the same malocclusion that was followed-up for the same period. Seventy-six lateral cephalograms were evaluated at T1 (after correction) and T2 (follow-up) and cephalometric variables were analyzed by statistical tests. RESULTS: The results did not show significant skeletal, soft tissue or maxillary dentoalveolar changes. Overall, treatment effects on the experimental group were maintained at T2 evaluation with an increase of 0.56 mm in overbite. Overjet and maxillary incisors/molars position (vertical and sagittal) remained essentially unchanged during the study period. Only mandibular incisors showed significant changes (labial inclination and protrusion) compared to control group. CONCLUSIONS: Thus, it can be concluded that the early open bite treatment with a removable appliance and palatal crib associated with high-pull chincup therapy provided stability of 95%.

OBJETIVO: avaliar as alterações do perfil facial decorrentes do tratamento ortodôntico com extrações de dois primeiros pré-molares superiores, sob a óptica de ortodontistas, cirurgiões-dentistas e leigos. MÉTODOS: foram traçados os perfis faciais das telerradiografias pré- e pós-tratamento de 70 pacientes com má oclusão de Classe II, divisão 1, e foi montado um álbum com as silhuetas dos 70 pacientes, de forma aleatória, sendo dois perfis em cada folha do mesmo paciente. A seguir, 30 ortodontistas, 30 cirurgiões-dentistas e 30 leigos escolheram o perfil facial mais estético (A ou B), e a quantidade de alteração que percebiam entre os dois perfis pré- e pós-tratamento, de acordo com a escala visual analógica (EVA). RESULTADOS: os resultados revelaram que 83 examinadores preferiram o perfil pós-tratamento, sendo que somente três cirurgiões-dentistas e quatro leigos escolheram com maior frequência os perfis pré-tratamento. Assim, os ortodontistas escolheram mais frequentemente os perfis pós-tratamento, seguidos pelos cirurgiões-dentistas, sem diferença estatisticamente significativa entre cirurgiões-dentistas e leigos. Houve diferença estatisticamente significativa intragrupos na preferência do perfil pré- e pós-tratamento. Além disso, os três grupos de avaliadores indicaram que os perfis pré- e pós-tratamento não diferiram substancialmente. CONCLUSÕES: o tratamento da má oclusão de Classe II, divisão 1, com extração de dois primeiros pré-molares produziu um efeito positivo na estética do perfil facial.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the facial profile changes of orthodontic treatment with extraction of two upper first premolars, from the perspective of orthodontists, dentists and lay people. METHODS: Facial profiles of radiographs taken before and after treatment of 70 patients with Class II, division 1 malocclusion were traced. The silhouettes of the 70 patients were randomly assembled in an album with, being two profiles on each sheet of the same patient. Then, 30 orthodontists, 30 dentists and 30 lay people chose the more esthetic facial profile (A or B), and the amount of change they perceived between the two profiles before and after treatment, according to a visual analog scale (VAS). RESULTS: The results revealed that 83 examiners preferred the post-treatment profiles, and only three dentists and four lay people chose the profiles pre-treatment more frequently. Thus, the orthodontists often chose the profiles after treatment, followed by dentists, with no statistically significant differences found between dentists and lay people. There were significant differences within groups in the preference of pre- and post-treatment profile. Furthermore, the three groups of evaluators indicated that pre and post-treatment profiles did not differ substantially. CONCLUSIONS: The treatment of Class II, division 1 malocclusion with extraction of two first premolars has a positive effect on facial profile esthetics.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this prospective study was to compare the dentoalveolar effects produced by two types of palatal crib, removable (Rpc+C) and fixed (Fpc+C), combined with chincup in growing patients with anterior open bite. MATERIAL AND METHODS: each group comprised 30 patients, in the mixed dentition phase, with similar cephalometric characteristics and skeletal ages. Group 1 (Rpc+C) presented initial mean age of 8.3 years and mean anterior open bite of 4.0 mm. Group 2 (Fpc+C) presented initial mean age of 8.54 years and mean anterior open bite of 4.3 mm. The evaluation period comprised 12 months between initial (T1) and second lateral radiograph (T2). The T2-T1 changes were compared cephalometrically in the 2 groups using the non-paired t-test. RESULTS: Vertical changes in the posterior dentoalveolar region were similar between the groups (about 1 mm) and no significant differences were found in molar mesialization. The Fpc+C group had in average 1.6 mm more improvement of the overbite as a result of greater maxillary incisor extrusion (1.3 mm). Patients in this group also presented less lingual tipping of maxillary incisors and more mandibular incisors uprighting. CONCLUSIONS: The Fpc+C combination was more efficient in the correction of the negative overbite mainly due to greater extrusion of the maxillary incisors. However, the Rpc+C appliance promoted better upper and lower incisor inclination, resulting in a more adequate overjet.

OBJETIVO: verificar a prevalência de más oclusões em 3.466 crianças com 7 a 12 anos de idade, matriculadas em escolas públicas nas cidades de Lins/SP e Promissão/SP. MÉTODOS: considerou-se a relação sagital entre as arcadas dentárias, a relação interarcadas no sentido transversal e a relação de incisivos nos sentidos vertical e horizontal. Na relação intra-arcada avaliou-se a prevalência de diastemas, apinhamentos e perdas dentárias. RESULTADOS: entre as más oclusões, 55,25% das crianças apresentaram uma relação molar de Classe I, seguida de 38% de Classe II e 6,75% de Classe III. Na relação de incisivos houve prevalência de mordida aberta em 17,65% dos casos, seguida de 13,28% para mordida profunda e 5,05% de mordida cruzada anterior. A mordida cruzada posterior foi encontrada em 13,3% das crianças. Na relação intra-arcada, 31,88% das crianças mostraram diastemas; 31,59%, apinhamento; e 4,65%, perdas dentárias.

OBJECTIVE: This study determined the prevalence of malocclusion in a group of 3,466 children aged 7 to 12 years enrolled in public school in the cities of Lins and Promissão, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS: It was analyzed the sagittal relationships between dental arches, the transverse relationship between arches, and the vertical and horizontal relations of incisors. The prevalence of diastemas, crowding and tooth losses were evaluated. RESULTS: Among the types of malocclusion, 55.25% of the children had a Class I molar relationship; 38%, Class II; and 6.75%, Class III. The analysis of incisor relationships revealed 17.65% of open bite, followed by 13.28% of deep bite and 5.05% of anterior crossbite; 13.3% of the children had a posterior crossbite. The analysis of relationships between arches showed that 31.88% of the children had diastemas; 31.59%, crowding; and 4.65, tooth losses.

OBJETIVO: o objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar, por meio de análises microbiológicas, a contaminação de diferentes tipos de alicates ortodônticos (139, Weingart, removedor de bandas e de corte distal) após a lavagem com água e sabão e fricção de álcool 70% por um minuto. MÉTODOS: todos os alicates foram, inicialmente, esterilizados em autoclave durante 20 minutos, a 121ºC e pressão de 1atm. Após o atendimento ortodôntico, os alicates utilizados foram depositados individualmente em recipientes estéreis tipo béquer, fechados com papel kraft e transportados ao laboratório de Microbiologia. Esses alicates foram submetidos, numa primeira etapa, à coleta imediata de microrganismos e à semeadura para contagem de bactérias. Posteriormente, os mesmos alicates foram lavados com água corrente e sabão, e friccionados por um minuto com gaze (esterilizada) embebida em álcool 70% (P/P). Novos testes bacteriológicos foram, então, realizados. Os alicates esterilizados do grupo controle foram submetidos aos mesmos testes bacteriológicos, todavia não haviam sido utilizados na clínica. RESULTADOS: os resultados demonstraram uma grande quantidade e variedade de bactérias residuais após a realização da desinfecção com o álcool 70%. CONCLUSÕES: mesmo alicates que não são inseridos na cavidade bucal do paciente, como o 139, mas que são pegos pelo ortodontista, cujas luvas entram em contato com saliva e/ou sangue, devem ser esterilizados, pois somente a desinfecção não é suficiente para impedir a potencial infecciosidade desses instrumentos.

AIM: The aim of this study was to verify, by means of microbiological analysis, the contamination in different kinds of orthodontic pliers (Distal End Cutter, Bird Beak, Band Remover and Weingart), after washing with water and detergent and followed by disinfection with 70% alcohol for 1 minute. METHODS: All the pliers were, initially, sterilized in autoclave for 20 minutes, at 121ºC and 1atm of pressure. After the orthodontic appointment, the pliers were adequately transported to Microbiology Laboratory and the evaluations of variety and quantity of bacteria were made. Afterward, the same pliers were washed with water and detergent, and rubbed with gauze with 70% alcohol (p/p) for 1 minute. New bacteriological tests were done and compared to a control group of non utilized pliers. RESULTS: Results showed a great quantity and variety of residual bacteria after the disinfection with alcohol. CONCLUSIONS: Even pliers not inserted in patient mouth, but only handed by clinician, should be sterilized, once merely disinfection is not an adequate method for infection control.

OBJETIVO: diante da importância do sesamóide no emprego de métodos simplificados para a determinação da maturidade esquelética, julgamos necessário um estudo, em brasileiros adultos, para verificar a porcentagem de presença ou ausência deste ossículo. METODOLOGIA: a amostra constitui-se de 500 indivíduos brasileiros, com idade média de 22,5 (18-33) anos, de ambos os gêneros. A presença ou ausência do osso sesamóide foi verificada mediante a interpretação de radiografias periapicais, tomadas da articulação metacarpofalangena dos dois polegares de cada indivíduo da pesquisa. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÃO: os resultados demonstraram que o osso sesamóide da articulação metacarpofalangeana esteve presente em todos os indivíduos (100%) da amostra, concluindo, desta forma, que não houve agenesia deste osso nesta população avaliada.

AIM: the purpose of this study was to verify the percentage of agenesis of sesamoid bone in a Brazilian adult population. METHODS: the sample consisted of 329 females and 171 males, with mean age of 22.5 (range from 18 to 33 years). The presence or agenesis of sesamoid bone was evaluated through periapical radiographs taken from the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb (left and right) of each subject. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The results evidenced that the sesamoid bone was present in 100% of the sample, showing that was not found agenesis in these population.
