Resumo A região sul do Brasil é rica em recursos hídricos e biogeográficos, contribuindo para a formação de nichos ictiofaunísticos distintos facilitando o isolamento de algumas espécies. Apesar da grande importância ecológica, existem poucos estudos citogenéticos e moleculares sobre a ictiofauna dessas bacias. Por isso, espécimes de Ancistrus abilhoai e Hemiancistrus fuliginosus foram analisados através da combinação de marcadores citogenéticos e mitocondriais. A análise citogenética revelou um número diploide de 2n = 48 para A. abilhoai e 2n = 56 para H. fuliginosus e foram identificados sítios de DNAr (por hibridização in situ fluorescente-FISH) com sondas 18S e 5S, em sintonia no par 16 de A. abilhoai, enquanto em H. fuliginosus estes sítios estão localizados em pares separados. Considerando o clusterAncistrus, com base nos dados moleculares COI, os espécimes de A. abilhoai ficaram próximos de A. cirrhosus,tendo como grupo irmão A. multispinis e A. brevipinnis. Em relação a Hemiancistrus, os exemplares de H. fuliginosus apresentaram o mesmo haplótipo das sequências desta espécie, disponíveis no banco de dados, formando um clado distinto com H. aspidolepis como grupo irmão. Abstract The southern region of Brazil is rich in hydric and biogeographic resources, contributing to the formation of distinct ichthyofaunistic niches and facilitating the isolation of some species. Despite the great ecological importance, there are few cytogenetic and molecular studies on the ichthyofauna of these basins. Therefore, specimens of Ancistrus abilhoai and Hemiancistrus fuliginosus were analyzed by combining cytogenetic and mitochondrial markers. Cytogenetic analysis revealed a diploid number of 2n = 48 for A. abilhoai and 2n = 56 for H. fuliginosus and Sites rDNA (by fluorescent in situ hybridization-FISH) were identified with 18S and 5S probes in synteny in pair 16 of A. abilhoai. At the same time in H. fuliginosus, these sites are located in separate pairs. Resumo Hypostomus khimaera, descrita da bacia do alto rio Paraguai no Brasil, apresentou algumas variações morfológicas em sua descrição original, o que, aliado à sua distribuição geográfica relativamente ampla, reforçou a necessidade de uma nova avaliação de seu status taxonômico. Aqui, nós analisamos um novo conjunto robusto de material, composto por 636 exemplares de diversas localidades da bacia do alto rio Paraguai, além do material listado na descrição original. A partir disso, foi possível compreender melhor os limites da espécie, proporcionando um diagnóstico mais preciso e uma redescrição de H. khimaera, que também trouxe alguma luz aos limites do próprio grupo H. cochliodon. A espécie pode ser distinguida de suas congêneres por apresentar as seguintes características: (I) ausência de um entalhe entre o metapterigóide e a hiomandíbula, (II) dentários agudamente angulados, com cerca de até 90°, (III) dentes com cúspide medial variando de viliforme a em forma de pá, (IV) opérculo completamente margeado por uma espessa camada de pele, (V) uma faixa escura longitudinal ao longo da porção média dos flancos, que é variavelmente difusa, e (VI) manchas escuras em pelo menos uma parte do corpo. Abstract Hypostomus khimaera, described from the upper rio Paraguai basin in Brazil, was reported to present some morphological variations in its original description, which allied to its relatively wide geographical distribution reinforced the need for a new assessment of its taxonomic status. Here, we analyzed a new robust set of material, composed by 636 specimens from several localities within the upper rio Paraguai basin, besides the material listed in the original description. From this, it was possible to better understand the limits of the species providing a more accurate diagnosis and a redescription for H. khimaera, which also brought some light to the limits of the H. cochliodon group itself. The species can be distinguished from its congeners by having the following features: (I) absence of a notch between the metapterygoid and hyomandibula, (II) acutely angled dentaries, with up to about 90°, (III) teeth with medial cusp ranging from villiform to shovel-shaped, (IV) opercle completely surrounded by a thick layer of skin, (V) a longitudinal dark stripe along middle portion of flanks, which is variably diffuse, and (VI) dark spots on at least one part of the body. Although morphological and color pattern differences have been found in different populations along the upper rio Paraguai basin, all examined specimens are herein considered to belong to H. khimaera, a decision based on both morphologic and molecular analyses. Resumo Hypostomus está distribuído por bacias da América Central e do Sul, com grande diversidade de espécies com conflitos taxonômicos. Desta forma, a integração de técnicas auxiliares contribui para a compreensão da sistemática e filogenia do grupo. Assim, este estudo teve como objetivo investigar Hypostomus cochliodon e H. boulengeri do riacho Onça (bacia do rio Paraguai) por meio de técnicas aloenzimáticas e citogenéticas. As análises citogenéticas em H. boulengeri mostraram número cromossômico igual a 2n = 68 (14m+14sm+18st+22a), sistema de NOR múltiplo revelado por Ag-NOR e 18S-FISH, um polimorfismo de heterocromatina em acrocêntricos e a presença de microcromossomos Bs. Hypostomus cochliodon mostrou um número diploide de 64 cromossomos (16m+26sm+14st+8a); apesar do sistema de NOR simples, alguns indivíduos apresentaram NOR em ambos os telômeros detectados por Ag-NOR e 18S-FISH. Abstract Hypostomus is distributed by Central and South America basins, with diverse species with taxonomic conflicts. This way, the integration of auxiliary techniques contributes to understanding the systematics and phylogeny of the group. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the Hypostomus cochliodon and H. boulengeri from the Onça stream (Paraguai River basin) by allozyme and cytogenetic techniques. Hypostomus boulengeri showed a diploid number of 68 chromosomes (14m+14sm+18st+22a), multiple NOR revealed by Ag-NOR and 18S rDNA FISH, a polymorphism of heterochromatin in acrocentrics and the presence of B microchromosome. Hypostomus cochliodon showed a diploid number of 64 chromosomes (16m+26sm+14st+8a); despite the single NOR, some individuals showed NOR in both telomeres detected by Ag-NOR and 18S rDNA FISH. Isozyme identified two diagnostic loci (Idh-A and Gdh-A) between the two species and multiple loci with unique alleles in H. boulengeri. Resumo As espécies de Hypostomus da bacia do rio Parnaíba foram revisadas por meio de análises moleculares e morfológicas. Cinco espécies foram encontradas na bacia, incluindo uma nova espécie aqui descrita. A distribuição de H. pusarum foi expandida para esta bacia, uma espécie intimamente relacionada foi registrada (H. aff. pusarum), e a presença de H. johnii e H. vaillanti foi confirmada. A nova espécie se distingue da maioria das congêneres por seu grande número de dentes nos pré-maxilares e dentários, um amplo ângulo do dentário de 115° a 135°, presença de manchas escuras arredondadas em um fundo mais claro e região anteromedial do abdômen sem placas (vs. região anteromedial do abdômen coberta por placas e odontódios em H. johnii, H. pusarum, H. aff. pusarum e H. vaillanti). Além disso, é apresentada uma chave de identificação das espécies da ecorregião Maranhão-Piauí e mapas com a distribuição geográfica dessas espécies. As espécies de Hypostomus na bacia do rio Parnaíba apresentam diferentes distribuições geográficas, sugerindo diferentes nichos ou barreiras geográficas, proporcionando oportunidade para estudos ecológicos e evolutivos.

Abstract The species of Hypostomus from the Parnaíba River basin were reviewed through molecular and morphological analysis. Five species were found in the basin, including a new species herein described. The distribution of H. pusarum was expanded to this basin, and a closely related species was recorded (H. aff. pusarum), also the presence of H. johnii and H. vaillanti was confirmed. The new species is distinguished from most congeners by its large number of premaxillary and dentary teeth, a wide dental angle of 115° to 135°, presence of a rounded dark spots on a lighter background and anteromedial region of the abdomen depleted of plaques (vs. anteromedial region of the abdomen covered by platelets and odontodes in H. johnii, H. pusarum, H. aff. pusarum and H. vaillanti). Furthermore, an identification key of the species from the Maranhão-Piauí ecoregion and maps with the geographic distribution of these species are presented. The species of Hypostomus in the Parnaíba River basin have different geographic distributions, suggesting different niches or geographical barriers, providing an opportunity for ecological and evolutionary studies.

Resumo Uma redescrição de Hypostomus hermanni é aqui apresentada, juntamente com a descrição de uma nova espécie de Hypostomus, que é aparentemente endêmica da bacia do rio Ivaí, afluente do alto rio Paraná, Brasil. Hypostomus hermanni é diagnosticada de suas congêneres principalmente por apresentar: geralmente grandes manchas pretas ao longo do corpo e nadadeiras; ausência de quilhas no pterótico-composto, nas placas pré-dorsais e nas séries laterais de placas ósseas; por ter as regiões do parieto-supraoccipital e predorsal planas; e por ter menos que 46 dentes por cada ramo premaxilar ou dentário. A espécie nova distingue-se de suas congêneres principalmente pela ausência de manchas conspícuas no corpo, e supraocciptal não quilhado e dentes viliformes bicuspidados.

Abstract A redescription of Hypostomus hermanni is presented herein along with the description of a new species of Hypostomus, which is apparently endemic to the Ivaí River basin, a tributary of the Upper Paraná River basin, Brazil. Hypostomus hermanni is diagnosed from congeners mainly by having: usually large black blotches on body and fins; absence of keels on compound pterotic, on pre-dorsal plates, and on lateral series of bony plates; by having parieto-supraoccipital and predorsal region flat; and by having less than 46 teeth per each premaxilla or dentary ramus. The new species is distinguished from congeners mainly for lacking conspicuous blotches, parieto-supraoccipital non-carinate, and villiform bicuspid teeth.

Resumo: O rio Madeira é o mais extenso afluente do rio Amazonas e possui a maior biodiversidade de peixes do mundo. Em sua margem direita, o rio Madeira recebe o rio Jamari, no qual foi construída a primeira usina hidrelétrica (UHE) do estado de Rondônia, a UHE Samuel. Além desta, outros barramentos foram construídos no rio Jamari e em seus afluentes, contudo são raras as informações disponíveis na literatura científica sobre a diversidade ictiofaunística desta bacia. O objetivo deste trabalho foi providenciar um inventário ictiofaunístico na região da bacia do rio Jamari, no estado de Rondônia, onde foram implantadas três pequenas centrais hidrelétricas (PCHs). A ictiofauna foi amostrada em 16 expedições entre os meses de agosto de 2015 e dezembro de 2018. Foram utilizadas redes de espera e arrasto com malhas de diversos tamanhos, além de espinhéis e tarrafas em diferentes períodos do dia. Adicionalmente, 81 lotes de espécies do INPA da área de influência da UHE Samuel foram reanalisados. Os peixes foram identificados de acordo com a literatura especializada, bem como em consultas com especialistas de diversos grupos taxonômicos. Exemplares testemunho das espécies foram catalogados e depositados na coleção ictiológica do Núcleo de Pesquisas em Limnologia, Ictiologia e Aquicultura da Universidade Estadual de Maringá. Foram registradas 230 espécies, destas, 22 são possíveis espécies novas, 117 são acrescentadas à bacia do rio Jamari e 28 à bacia do rio Madeira. A continuação dos estudos neste trecho da bacia do rio Jamari é fundamental para análises de impacto local devido à presença de barramentos. Além disso, a adição de possíveis novas espécies à bacia do rio Madeira aponta lacunas no conhecimento da ictiofauna Neotropical.

Abstract: The Madeira River is the most extensive tributary of the Amazon River and has the largest diversity of fishes in the world. On its right bank, the Madeira River receives the Jamari River, in which the first hydroelectric power plant (HPP) in State of Rondônia, Samuel HPP, was built. Besides this, other dams were built in the Jamari River and its tributaries, however, the available information in the scientific literature about the ichthyofaunistic diversity of this basin is rare. This work aims to provide an ichthyofaunistic inventory in a region of the Jamari river basin, in the State of Rondônia, where three small hydropower plants (SHPs) were implemented. The ichthyofauna was sampled in 16 expeditions between August 2015 and December 2018. Gill nets and seine nets were used with different meshes, as well as longlines and cast nets at different times of the day. Additionally, 81 INPA lots of species from the Samuel HPP area of influence were reanalyzed. Fish were identified according to the specialized literature, as well as in consultations with experts of various taxonomic groups. Voucher specimens of the species were cataloged and deposited in the ichthyological collection of the Núcleo de Pesquisas em Limnologia, Ictiologia e Aquicultura (Nupélia) of the Universidade Estadual de Maringá. A total of 230 species were recorded, of which 22 were putative new species, 117 were added to the Jamari River basin and 28 to the Madeira River basin. The continuation of the studies in this section of the Jamari river basin is fundamental for analysis of local impact due to the presence of dams. Moreover, the addition of putative new species to the Madeira River basin indicates gaps in the knowledge of Neotropical ichthyofauna.

RESUMO Hypostomus johnii (Steindachner) foi descrita a partir de espécimes da bacia do rio Parnaíba, no Estado do Piauí e da bacia do rio São Francisco, no Estado da Bahia. Apesar da descrição original de H. johnii ter sido adequada para a época, esta não permite atualmente a sua diferenciação dos outros congêneres. Portanto, H. johnii é redescrita, baseado na análise dos tipos e de espécimes recentemente coletados. Recentes esforços de coleta nas bacias do rios Parnaíba e São Francisco resultaram em espécimes coletados apenas na bacia do rio Parnaíba. Este fato coloca em dúvida a ocorrência de H. johnii na bacia do rio São Francisco. Hypostomus johnii é diferenciada de seus congêneres principalmente por possuir um elevado número de dentes no pré-maxilar e dentário (entre 60-115), por apresentar pequenas manchas escuras de tamanho moderado sobre um fundo claro; ausência de quilhas sobre flancos; e as placas do abdômen mais evidente nas laterais. Um lectótipo para H. johnii é aqui designado e H. eptingi é considerado sinônimo júnior de H. johnii.

ABSTRACT Hypostomus johnii (Steindachner) was described from the rio Parnaíba basin in the state of Piauí and the rio São Francisco basin in the state of Bahia. Despite the good quality of the original description of H. johnii, it does not currently allow its distinction from congeners. Thus, H. johnii is redescribed based on the analysis of the types and several recently collected specimens. Recent collecting efforts of the rios Parnaíba and São Francisco basins resulted in specimens only being found in the rio Parnaíba basin. This raises doubts about whether H. johnii occurs in the rio São Francisco basin. The species is distinguished from its congeners by having a high number of teeth on the premaxilla and dentary (between 60-115); small to moderate-sized dark spots with a light background; absence of keels on flanks; and abdominal plates more evident on laterals. A lectotype of H. johnii is designated herein and H. eptingi is considered a junior synonym of H. johnii.

A diversidade da ictiofauna da bacia do rio Ivaí é altamente subestimada. O presente estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar a ictiofauna do rio Bonito, um tributário do rio Ivaí, bacia do alto rio Paraná, quanto à riqueza, diversidade e constância de espécies. Foram estabelecidos três locais de amostragem ao longo do gradiente longitudinal do rio: cabeceira, trecho médio e região de desembocadura próxima ao rio Ivaí. Três incursões de coleta foram feitas em cada unidade utilizando redes de espera de diferentes malhas, tarrafas e covos. A ictiofauna foi composta por 23 espécies, divididas em nove famílias e três ordens. Entre as espécies coletadas, três delas são possíveis novos registros para o alto rio Paraná e 12 para a bacia do rio Ivaí. A maior riqueza foi registrada no trecho inferior, onde foram encontradas 20 espécies, o qual também apresentou maior diversidade e menor dominância de espécies. No trecho médio do rio foram coletadas sete espécies e no trecho superior apenas uma. No baixo rio Bonito a maioria das espécies foram acessórias e no trecho médio cinco foram constantes e apenas uma acessória. O trecho médio apresentou maior dominância de espécies, com destaque para Hypostomus aff. ancistroides. O gradiente altitudinal foi um importante fator estruturador da assembleia de peixes do rio Bonito, delimitando as assembleias ao longo do gradiente longitudinal.

The ichthyofauna diversity of the Ivaí river basin is largely underestimated. The present study aimed to characterize the fish fauna of the Bonito River, a tributary to the Ivaí River, upper Paraná river basin, in relation to richness, diversity and constancy. It was established three sampling sites along the longitudinal gradient of the river: headwater, medium stretch and mouth, at the point near the confluence to Ivaí river. Three collection expeditions were made in each site. Gill nets of different meshes, cast nets and traps were used. The ichthyofauna of the Bonito river was composed by 23 species, divided into nine families and three orders. Among the sampled species, three were possible new records for the upper Paraná river basin and 12 for the Ivaí river basin. The highest species richness was recorded in the lower stretch, where 20 species were found. In the middle section of the river, seven species were collected and just one species was captured at headwater. In the lower stretch it was also obtained the greatest diversity and lower species dominance. Additionally, in the lower Bonito river most of the species were incidental, whereas in the middle section five species were constant and only one was accessory. The middle section had the most dominant species, Hypostomus aff. ancistroides. The altitudinal gradient seems to determine the pattern of species distribution, delimiting the assemblages along longitudinal gradient of the river.

Hypostomus delimai é descrita do rio Tocantins no estado do Tocantins e do rio Araguaia, entre os estados do Pará e Tocantins, Brasil. A espécie nova é diagnosticada das demais espécies de Hypostomus, com exceção de H. carinatus, H. hoplonites e H. watwata por possuir de cinco a oito (moda sete) placas pré-dorsais margeando a borda posterior do supraoccipital (vs.uma ou até três placas). Difere de H. carinatus, H. hoplonites, e H. watwata por apresentar pintas claras sobre o corpo e nadadeiras (vs. pintas escuras sobre fundo claro). A espécie nova foi encontrada somente no trecho médio da bacia do rio Tocantins-Araguaia. Os primeiros registros da espécie nova foram feitos no rio Tocantins antes da construção da barragem de Tucuruí. Recentemente, material adicional foi coletado no rio Araguaia, em um habitat que será brevemente inundado pela construção da hidrelétrica de Santa Isabel.

Hypostomus delimaiis described from the rio Tocantins, Tocantins State, and from the rio Araguaia, Pará, and Tocantins States, Brazil. The new species is distinguished from all other Hypostomusspecies, except from H. carinatus, H. hoplonites, and H. watwata, by the presence of five to eight (mode seven) predorsal plates limiting posterior border of the supraoccipital bone (vs. one to three plates). It can be distinguished from H. carinatus, H. hoplonites, and H. watwata by having pale spots over darker background on body and fins (vs. dark spots over lighter background). The species was only found in the middle stretches of the rio Tocantins-Araguaia basin. The first collection of specimens assigned to the new species was done in the rio Tocantins before the construction of the Tucuruí dam. Recently additional material was collected in the rio Araguaia, in a habitat that soon will be flooded for the construction of the Santa Isabel hydroelectric power station.

Neste estudo, foram conduzidas análises filogenéticas e filogeográficas de populações identificadas como Hypostomus strigaticepsna bacia do alto rio Paraná a fim de testar se essas populações compreendem espécies crípticas ou populações estruturadas e avaliar a variabilidade genética das mesmas. Foram analisadas sequências do DNA mitocondrial ATP sintetase (subunidades 6/8) de 27 espécimes de 10 populações (uma do rio Mogi-Guaçu, cinco do rio Paranapanema, três do rio Tietê e uma do rio do Peixe). A análise filogeográfica mostrou a existência de oito haplótipos (A-H), e apesar do haplótipo ancestral incluir apenas indivíduos da bacia do rio Tietê, a distribuição de H. strigaticeps não se restringe a esta bacia. Os haplótipos A, B e F foram os mais frequentes. D, E, F, G e H estão presentes na sub-bacia do rio Paranapanema, dois (A e B) estão presentes na sub-bacia do rio Tietê, um (C) está exclusivamente distribuído na sub-bacia do rio do Peixe, e um (B) também está presente na sub-bacia do rio Grande. A análise filogenética mostrou que as populações de H. strigaticeps realmente formam uma unidade monofilética que compreende duas linhagens: TG, com representantes do rio Tietê, rio Mogi-Guaçu e rio do Peixe, e PP, com espécimes do rio Paranapanema. O grau de divergência genética observada nas linhagens de TG e PP foram de 0,1% e 0,2%, respectivamente, enquanto que a divergência genética entre as duas linhagens foi de aproximadamente 1%. Os resultados da análise filogenética não suportam a hipótese da existência de espécies crípticas e a análise filogeográfica confirma a presença de H. strigaticeps em outras sub-bacias do alto rio Paraná: sub-bacias do rio Grande, rio do Peixe e rio Paranapanema.

In this study, phylogenetic and phylogeographic analyses of populations identified as Hypostomus strigaticeps from the upper Paraná River basin were conducted in order to test whether these different populations comprises cryptic species or structured populations and to assess their genetic variability. The sequences of the mitochondrial DNA ATP sintetase (subunits 6/8) of 27 specimens from 10 populations (one from Mogi-Guaçu River, five from Paranapanema River, three from Tietê River and one from Peixe River) were analyzed. The phylogeographic analysis showed the existence of eight haplotypes (A-H), and despite the ancestral haplotype includes only individuals from the Tietê River basin, the distribution of H. strigaticeps was not restricted to this basin. Haplotypes A, B and F were the most frequent. Haplotypes D, E, F, G, and H were present in the sub-basin of Paranapanema, two (A and B) were present in the sub-basin of the Tietê River, one (C) was exclusively distributed in the sub-basin of the Peixe River, and one (B) was also present in the sub-basin of the Grande River. The phylogenetic analysis showed that the populations of H. strigaticeps indeed form a monophyletic unit comprising two lineages: TG, with representatives from the Tietê, Mogi-Guaçu and Peixe Rivers; and PP, with specimens from the Paranapanema River. The observed degree of genetic divergence within the TG and PP lineages was 0.1% and 0.2%, respectively, whereas the genetic divergence between the two lineages themselves was approximately 1%. The results of the phylogenetic analysis do not support the hypothesis of existence of crypt species and the phylogeographic analysis confirm the presence of H. strigaticeps in other sub-basins of the upper Paraná River: Grande, Peixe, and Paranapanema sub-basins.

Segregações sazonais entre espécies sintópicas podem ser interpretadas como táticas utilizadas para a coexistência, diminuindo processos competitivos. Neste contexto, o presente trabalho buscou interpretar a estrutura da assembléia formada por aves do gênero Turdus (Turdidae) para averiguar a possibilidade de padrões distintos de ocorrência em função da variação sazonal em um fragmento florestal situado no Centro-sul do Estado do Paraná. Foram utilizadas redes ornitológicas para a captura das aves, com um esforço amostral anual de 7488 h.m². Por meio das capturas quinzenais foi possível a obtenção do índice de frequência de ocorrência, constância e classes de dominância das espécies, bem como, de parâmetros ecológicos utilizados em estudos de comunidades. Um total de 162 indivíduos pertencentes a cinco espécies foram capturados. Turdus rufiventris foi a espécie mais frequente e constante durante o estudo. Turdus amaurochalinus e T. leucomelas foram capturadas com frequências e constâncias variáveis entre as estações do ano, sendo que, para T. amaurochalinus houve evidências de sobreposição de populações migrantes e não migrantes durante a primavera. Turdus albicollis foi considerada acessória, enquanto T. subalaris foi registrada somente durante a temporada reprodutiva. Desta forma, foi possível observar que ocorrem modificações sazonais, tanto na frequência de ocorrência, quanto na constância e dominância das espécies. Tais resultados indicam a possibilidade de menor intensidade do uso do ambiente durante o período reprodutivo, assim como a presença de um maior número de espécies no verão e aumento da abundância de T. rufiventris e T. leucomelas durante o outono e inverno.

Seasonal segregation among syntopic species can be viewed as one of the available strategies for coexistence, reducing competitive process. The present work therefore aimed to interpret the assemblage structures comprising birds of the genus Turdus (Turdidae), through the analysis of seasonal variation in the species occurrence in a forest remnant located in the southcenter State of Paraná. Mist-netting was employed twice a month for capturing birds, totalling an annual effort of 7488 h.m². The frequency of occurrence, constancy and class of species dominance was determined, together with the parameters generally used in studies of ecological communities (richness, abundance, diversity and evenness). A total of 162 individuals were captured, representing five species. Turdus rufiventris was the most constant and frequent species. Turdus amaurochalinus and Turdus leucomelas were captured with variable constancies and frequencies along the seasons. Turdus amaurochalinus was also very common and may present an overlapping process between migrant and non-migrant individuals during spring. Turdus albicolis was considered accessory, whereas Turdus subalaris was only registered during the reproductive period. Hence, it was possible to observe that seasonal modifications occurred both in the frequency of occurrence and in the constancy and dominance of species. These results indicated the possibility of a lower use of the environment during the breeding season, as well as the presence of a higher number of individuals in summer and increased abundance of Turdus rufiventris and T. leucomelas during autumn and winter.

Foram revisadas extensivas coleções de peixes do gênero Hypostomus da bacia do rio Iguaçu, somando 793 exemplares, principalmente das seguintes coleções: Laboratório de Ictiologia do Departamento de Ecologia e Biologia Evolutiva da Universidade Federal de São Carlos, da coleção de peixes do Núcleo de Pesquisas em Limnologia, Ictiologia e Aquicultura da Universidade Estadual de Maringá e do Museu de História Natural do Capão da Imbuia. Hypostomus albopunctatus, H. commersoni, H. derbyi e H. myersi são redescritas e Hypostomus nigropunctatus é descrita como uma espécie nova. Uma chave artificial de identificação para as espécies do gênero Hypostomus do rio Iguaçu também é fornecida.

We reviewed several large collections of the genus Hypostomus from the rio Iguaçu basin summing up to 793 specimens mainly from the Laboratório de Ictiologia do Departamento de Ecologia e Biologia Evolutiva from Universidade Federal de São Carlos, from fish collection of Núcleo de Pesquisas em Limnologia, Ictiologia e Aquicultura da Universidade Estadual de Maringá, and from the Museu de História Natural do Capão da Imbuia. Hypostomus albopunctatus, H. commersoni, H. derbyi, and H. myersi are redescribed and Hypostomus nigropunctatus is described as a new species. A practical key for identification of Hypostomus species from the rio Iguaçu is also provided.

Neste trabalho foram investigadas algumas das estratégias que tornam possíveis a coexistência de duas espécies sintópicas e congenéricas (Turdus leucomelas e Turdus rufiventris), em um fragmento urbano de floresta com araucárias. Os parâmetros amostrados foram a abundância média, estrato florestal utilizado pelas aves, ambientes florestais, aspectos morfológicos, e a dieta. Tais parâmetros foram obtidos através de capturas com redes ornitológicas no sub-bosque, constatação da abundância através de transecções, e obtenção de regurgitos. Foi possível estimar que as espécies possuem padrões similares de ocorrência nos ambientes amostrados - borda exposta, transição e interior. Existe uma sobreposição morfológica de 98,67 (índice de Bray-Curtis) sendo que um teste de variáveis canônicas (F6, 88 = 25,39; p < 0,01) demonstrou uma diferença significativa para um conjunto de sete variáveis morfológicas. Apesar de existir certa semelhança entre as espécies, T. rufiventris apresentou maiores valores extremos e maior variação morfológica. A sobreposição de nicho trófico foi elevada (Ojk = 0,76) e as espécies se apresentaram generalistas com amplitude de nicho trófico superior para T. rufiventris. Não é muito evidente uma exclusão competitiva baseada na alimentação, no entanto os itens consumidos divergiram quando analisados por presença/ausência. Desta forma, o mínimo de divergência morfológica e variação nos recursos consumidos podem explicar parcialmente a coexistência, já que a segregação entre ambientes e estrato florestal ocupado não foi claramente observada, apesar de perceptível em relação ao interior e borda do fragmento florestal.

We investigated the strategies which make possible the coexistence of two congeneric and relatively similar species that share habitat (Turdus leucomelas and Turdus rufiventris) in an urban forest fragment with araucárias. The parameters applied were average abundance, forest stratum used by birds, forest environments, morphological aspects, and diet between the species. These parameters were assessed through samplings with mist nets in the understory, verification of abundance using transects, and acquisition of regurgitation. The species showed similar patterns of occurrence in the surveyed environments - exposed border, transition, and inner forest. There was a morphological overlap of 98.67 (Bray-Curtis index), andt a test of canonical variables (F6, 88 = 25.39; p < 0.01) pointed significant difference for a set of seven morphological variables. Although there is certain similarity between species, T. rufiventris showed higher extreme values and higher morphological variation. The overlap of trophic niche was elevated (Ojk = 0.76) and the species were considered as generalists, with higher extent of trophic niche for T. rufiventris. A competitive exclusion based on feeding is not quite evident. Yet, the consumed items diverged when analyzed for presence/absence, the minimum of morphological evidence and variation on the consumed resources may partially explain the coexistence. Segregation between environments and occupied forest strata was not clearly demonstrated, despite detectable when regarding interior and border of the forest fragment.

In this work, we analyzed the karyotypes of five species. Hypostomus cf. heraldoi, from the Mogi-Guaçu River, had 2n = 72 chromosomes, with a nucleolar organizer region (NOR) in one chromosomal pair. Hypostomus regani, from the Mogi-Guaçu River had 2n = 72 chromosomes with NORs in two chromosomal pairs. Hypostomus sp., from the Mogi-Guaçu River basin, had 2n = 68 chromosomes, with NORs in two chromosomal pairs. Hypostomus aff. agna, from Cavalo Stream, had 2n = 74 chromosomes with NORs in two chromosomal pairs. Hypostomus cf. topavae, from Carrapato Stream, had 2n = 80 chromosomes, with NORs in two chromosomal pairs. Hypostomus species showed marked diversity in the karyotypic formula, which suggested the occurrence of several Robertsonian rearrangements and pericentric inversions during the evolutionary history of this genus. This hypothesis was supported by the occurrence of a large number of uniarmed chromosomes and multiple NORs in a terminal position in most species and may be a derived condition in the Loricariidae.

Uma espécie nova de Hypostomus é descrita do rio Cuiabá, bacia do alto rio Paraguai, Estado do Mato Grosso, Brasil. A espécie nova é diagnosticada de todas as outras congêneres, com exceção de H. latifrons, pela presença de amplas barras escuras transversais nas laterais do corpo e nadadeiras, e pelas conspícuas vermiculações escuras na região abdominal. De H. latifrons ela difere por ter somente uma placa pré-dorsal margeando o osso supraoccipital e pela manutenção das barras escuras transversais nos adultos. Somada a outras espécies de peixes recentemente descritas na bacia do alto rio Paraguai, este trabalho demonstra que a região ainda funciona como uma fonte potencial de espécies novas.

A new Hypostomus species is described from the rio Cuiabá, upper rio Paraguay basin, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The new species is distinguished from all other Hypostomus species, with exception of young specimens of H. latifrons, by the presence of a wide dark transverse bars on laterals of body and fins; and conspicuous dark vermiculations on abdominal region. From H. latifrons it differs by having just one pre-dorsal plate surrounding supraoccipital bone and by the maintenance of the dark saddles in adults. Added to the other fish species recently described from the upper rio Paraguay basin, this work helps to highlight that the region still functions as a potential source of new species.
