Abstract Ecoacoustic indices may become an important tool to monitor marine ecosystems because they take passive and non-invasive measurements over wide spatial and temporal ranges. However, the performance and limitations of marine ecoacoustic indices are yet to be fully understood. This study evaluated the Acoustic Complexity Index (ACI), Acoustic Diversity Index (ADI), Bioacoustic Index (H), and Normalized Difference Sound Index (NDSI) in a marine protected area (MPA) named Resex mar Arraial do Cabo in a coastal upwelling in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. All considered variables, such as water temperature, wind direction, solar radiation, and vessel traffic were monitored from September to December 2018. Principal component analysis showed that the ACI index was negatively correlated with the number of vessels, whereas the ADI and H indices were correlated with water temperature. After categorizing specific moments, the ACI configured the best index for differentiating specific times of day, whereas the ADI was ideal for distinguishing between moments with and without vessel presence. Thus, the ACI and ADI showed the best performance overall. This study identified the main variables influencing the soundscape of a productive upwelling region and intensely used MPA. Abstract Introduction There is growing interest in the fields of psychiatry and psychology in investigating the relationship between personality and psychopathology. The Big-5 is a model developed to investigate five personality dimensions: Extroversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness. In the present study, we describe the process of translation into Brazilian Portuguese and adaptation of a free tool to evaluate the Big-5 model: The Big-5 Inventory (BFI). The instrument has 44 items with a Likert response scale ranging from 1 to 5. Objectives To translate and adapt the BFI into Brazilian Portuguese. Methods The adaptation was conducted in the following steps: 1) Translation, 2) Evaluation Committee, 3) Back-translation, 4) Pilot study, 5) Evaluation Committee, and 6) Application. The sample comprised 490 participants from various regions of Brazil. The participants’ ages ranged from 18 to 71 years, most of them had completed high school (62.9%), and the majority were women (75%). Results A model with the following fit indexes was found: χ2/df: 1.954; goodness fit index (GFI): 0.924; comparative fit index (CFI): 0.920; and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA): 0.044. RESUMEN Dada una laguna en la literatura con respecto a la ecuación para predecir el consumo máximo de oxígeno (VO2) en adolescentes de ambos sexos, el objetivo de este estudio es proponer una ecuación para predecir el VO2máximo en adolescentes sanos usando el shuttle test modificado (MST). Se trata de un estudio transversal, realizado con 84 adolescentes sanos con edades entre 12 y 18 años, de ambos sexos. El MST es una prueba de campo dictada por una señal sonora que indica el aumento de velocidad cada minuto. Se realizaron dos MST con al menos 30 minutos de descanso entre ellos. Para el análisis se consideró la prueba con mayor distancia recorrida. El monitoreo del VO2 fue realizado directamente por espirometría de circuito abierto. La edad media fue de 14,67±1,82 años; y la distancia recorrida, de 864,86±263,48m. Las variables incluidas en la ecuación de predicción fueron la distancia recorrida y el sexo, que explicaron el 53% de la variabilidad del VO2máximo durante la realización del MST. La ecuación de referencia para el VO2máximo predicho con el MST fue VO2máximo previsto=18,274+(0,18×Distancia recorrida, en metros)+(7,733×Sexo); R2=0,53 y p<0,0001 (sexo: 0 para chicas, 1 para chicos). RESUMO Dada a lacuna na literatura quanto à equação de predição do pico de consumo de oxigênio (VO2) para adolescentes de ambos os sexos, o objetivo deste estudo é propor uma equação para predizer o VO2pico em adolescentes saudáveis utilizando o shuttle test modificado (MST). ABSTRACT Given the gap in the literature regarding the peak of oxygen consumption (VO2peak) for adolescents of both sexes, this study aimed to propose an equation to predict the VO2peak in healthy adolescents using the Modified Shuttle Test (MST). This is a cross-sectional study with 84 healthy adolescents between 12 and 18 years old, female and male. The MST is an external paced test, in which the speed increases at each minute. Two MST were performed with at least 30 minutes of rest between them. The test with the longest walked distance was considered for analysis. VO2 was directly monitored by an open circuit spirometry. Mean age was 14.67±1.82 and the walked distance was 864.86±263.48m. Variables included in the prediction equation were walked distance and sex, explaining the VO2peak variability of 53% during MST performance. The prediction equation for VO2peak with the MST was: predicted VO2peak=18.274+(0.18×Distance Walked, meters)+(7.733×Sex); R2=0.53 and p<0.0001 (sex: 0 for girls, 1 for boys). This MST equation, proposed to predict VO2peak in healthy adolescents of both sexes, can be used as a reference to assess exercise capacity in healthy adolescents and to investigate cardiopulmonary function in adolescents with reduced functional capacity. Objective: Skin picking disorder (SPD) affects up to 5.4% of the population. Less than half of patients are correctly diagnosed and treated. Developing tools to recognize SPD can help professionals and patients alike. This trial aimed to validate the Skin Picking Scale-Revised (SPS-R) for the Brazilian population and assess the psychiatric and dermatological comorbidities of patients with SPD. Methods: Brazilians with a primary diagnosis of SPD, 18 years or older, were recruited from a community sample by media advertising and evaluated by a dermatologist and a psychiatrist. Self-report instruments were used: SPS-R, Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed to evaluate the SPS-R, and Pearson correlation (r) was used to assess the relationship between instruments. Results: Overall, 124 patients were included. The SPS-R demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach’s coefficient = 0.84). CFA found a good fit to the model according to all indices (χ2 = 29.67; degrees of freedom [df] = 19; p = 0.056; root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA] = 0.067; comparative fit index [CFI] = 0.969; non-normed fit index [NNFI] = 0.954). SPS-R correlated with DLQI (r = 0.73), GAD-7 (r = 0.51), and PHQ-9 (r = 0.43). The sample had a high prevalence of psychiatric disorders, mainly generalized anxiety disorder (62.1%) and current (32.3%) and past (37.1%) depressive episodes. Conclusion: The Brazilian version of the SPS-R presents good psychometric properties. The severity of SPD is related to severity of depression, anxiety, and impairment in quality of life. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar os efeitos da terapia de fotobiomodulação no estado redox, no marcador de angiogênese – fator de crescimento endotelial vascular – e na recuperação funcional do músculo desnervado. Métodos: Um total de 32 ratas Wistar foi submetido a uma lesão por esmagamento e dividido aleatoriamente em quatro grupos: Grupo Diodo Emissor de Luz 2 e Grupo Controle 2 (músculo coletado 2 dias após a lesão), além do Grupo Diodo Emissor de Luz 21 e do Grupo Controle 21 (músculo coletado 21 dias após a lesão). Grupo Diodo Emissor de Luz 2 e Grupo Diodo Emissor de Luz 21 receberam duas e dez aplicações de diodo emissor de luz (630±20nm, 9J/cm2e 300mW), respectivamente, e Grupo Controle 2 e Grupo Controle 21 não receberam tratamento. A função foi avaliada pelo teste de preensão em quatro momentos (pré-lesão, 2, 10 e 21 dias após a lesão). O músculo flexor dos dedos foi coletado para análise dos parâmetros redox e da imunolocalização do fator de crescimento endotelial vascular. Resultados: Houve melhora funcional no segundo e décimo dia pós-lesão nos grupos tratados em comparação aos controles (p<0,005). O tecido muscular dos grupos tratados apresentou maior expressão imuno-histoquímica do fator de crescimento endotelial vascular. A terapia de fotobiomodulação diminuiu o dano oxidativo aos lipídeos no Grupo Diodo Emissor de Luz 2 comparado ao Grupo Controle 2 (p=0,023) no músculo desnervado. Conclusão: A terapia de fotobiomodulação acelerou a recuperação funcional, aumentou a angiogênese e reduziu a peroxidação lipídica no músculo desnervado 2 dias após a lesão.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the effects of photobiomodulation therapy in redox status, angiogenesis marker – vascular endothelial growth factor – and in the functional recovery in denervated muscle. Methods: A total of 32 female Wistar rats underwent a crush injury and were randomly divided into four groups: Light Emitting Diode Group 2 and Control Group 2 (muscle collected 2 days after injury), and Light Emitting Diode Group 21 and Control Group 21 (muscle collected 21 days afterinjury). Light Emitting Diode Group 2 and Light Emitting Diode Group 21 received two and ten light emitting diode applications (630±20nm, 9J/cm2, 300mW), respectively, and the Control Group 2 and Control Group 21 did not receive any treatment. The function was evaluated by grasping test at four moments (pre-injury, 2, 10 and 21 post-injury days). The flexor digitorum muscle was collected for analysis of immunolocalization of vascular endothelial growth factor and redox parameters. Results: Functional improvement was observed at the second and tenth post-injury day in treated groups compared to control (p<0.005). The muscle tissue of treated groups presented higher immunohistochemical expression of vascular endothelial growth factor. Photobiomodulation therapy decreased the oxidative damage to lipid in Light Emitting Diode Group 2 compared to Control Group 2 (p=0.023) in the denervated muscle. Conclusion: Photobiomodulation therapy accelerated the functional recovery, increased angiogenesis and reduced lipid peroxidation in the denervated muscle at 2 days after injury.

SUMMARY Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic neuromuscular disorder with progressive clinical signs until death, around the second decade of life. Mdx is the most used animal model to pre-clinical studies of DMD. Parameters of exercise on this muscular disease are still unknown. This research aimed to investigate if the low intensity treadmill training would exacerbate the markers of muscle injury, fibrosis, and the composition of the extracellular matrix by type I and III collagens of the mdx model. Dystrophic 11-week-old male mice were separated in exercised (mdxE, n=8) and sedentary (mdxC, n=8) groups. Wild-type mice were used as control (WT, n=8). Exercised group underwent a LIT protocol (9 m/min, 30min, 3days/week, 60 days) on a horizontal treadmill. Gastrocnemius muscle was collected at day 60 and processed to morphological and morphometric analyzes. Sedentary mdx animals presented inflammatory infiltrate and necrotic fibers. Histochemical analysis revealed that the perimysium of the mdxC group is organized into thick and clustered collagen fibers, which generates a larger area of intramuscular collagen fibers for these animals. Histomorphometry attested that fraction area of collagen fibers of mdxC group was higher than mdxE group (p=0.04) and mdxE group values similar to WT group (p=1.00). Centrally located nuclei fibers and the variance coefficient (VC) of minimal Feret’s diameter was similar in mdxE and mdxC groups (p=1.00) and both groups presented higher mean values than WT group (p<0.00). Immunohistochemistry revealed the presence of type I collagen mainly in the mdxC group. LIT protocol had not exacerbated muscle injuries resulting from the dystrophindeficiency membrane fragility at the same time that had reduced the intramuscular collagen deposition. LIT had positively influenced these markers of dystrophic muscle injury on gastrocnemius muscle of mdx model.

RESUMEN: La distrofia muscular de Duchenne (DMD) es un trastorno neuromuscular genético con signos clínicos progresivos hasta la muerte, alrededor de la segunda década de la vida. Mdx es el modelo animal más utilizado para estudios preclínicos de DMD. Los parámetros del ejercicio en esta enfermedad muscular aún se desconocen. Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo investigar si el entrenamiento de cinta de baja intensidad exacerbaría los marcadores de lesión muscular, fibrosis y la composición de la matriz extracelular por colágenos tipo I y III del modelo mdx. Ratones machos de 11 semanas de edad con distrofia se separaron en grupos ejercitados (mdxE, n = 8) y sedentarios (mdxC, n = 8). Se usaron ratones de tipo salvaje como control (WT, n = 8). El grupo sometido a ejercicio se sometió a un protocolo LIT (9 m / min, 30 min, 3 días / semana, 60 días) en una cinta de trotar horizontal. El músculo gastrocnemio se retiró el día 60 y se procesó para realizar análisis morfológicos y morfométricos. Los animales sedentarios mdx presentaron infiltrado inflamatorio y fibras necróticas. El análisis histoquímico reveló que el perimisio del grupo mdxC está organizado en fibras de colágeno gruesas y agrupadas, lo que genera una mayor área de fibras de colágeno intramusculares para estos animales. La histomorfometría indicó que el área de fracción de las fibras de colágeno del grupo mdxC era más alta que el grupo mdxE (p = 0,04) y los valores del grupo mdxE eran similares al grupo WT (p = 1,00). Las fibras de los núcleos ubicados centralmente y el coeficiente de varianza (VC) del diámetro mínimo de Feret fueron similares en los grupos mdxE y mdxC (p = 1,00) y ambos grupos presentaron valores medios más altos que el grupo WT (p <0,00). La inmunohistoquímica reveló la presencia de colágeno tipo I principalmente en el grupo mdxC. El protocolo LIT no había agravado las lesiones musculares resultantes de la fragilidad de la membrana con deficiencia de distrofina al mismo tiempo que había reducido la deposición intramuscular de colágeno. LIT ha influido positivamente en estos marcadores de lesión muscular distrófica en el músculo gastrocnemio del modelo mdx.

ABSTRACT A cytotoxicity study is performed on a poly(methyl methacrylate) polymer (PMMA) to be used for the fabrication of bone tissue by Rapid Prototyping (RP). The solution polymerization is conducted in a pilot plant reactor using more appropriated reagents in consideration of the medical application. Moreover, the polymer is efficiently handled to avoid the side effect of the monomer, reducing the concentration of this specie to 287,731 µg MMA/kg PMMA. The cytotoxicity of the polymer is determined through growth monitoring, adherence and morphology of L-929 cells. Additionally, MTT and LIVE/DEAD tests are performed. The results showed continuous and progressive growth of the cells on the surface of the specimens. Moreover, the material did not influence on the viability of mesenchymal cells and inverted fluorescence microscopy images showed a polyanionic dye calcein well retained in the cells in contact with the PMMA as well as the negative control after 72 hours. Thus, the polymer was efficiently synthesized and handled for the expected demands.

INTRODUÇÃO: Crianças com Paralisia Cerebral (PC) apresentam uma série de deficiências e limitações que geram dependência em relação a seus cuidadores. OBJETIVO: Avaliar se a qualidade de vida de cuidadores de crianças com PC está relacionada ao comprometimento motor da criança, à classe econômica ou à escolaridade do cuidador. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Foram entrevistados 45 cuidadores informais de crianças com PC por meio do questionário WHOQOL-bref e da classificação econômica da Associação Brasileira de Empresas de Pesquisa (Abep). As crianças foram classificadas de acordo com o Gross Motor Function Classification System. Realizaram-se testes de associação e correlação das variáveis com os domínios do WHOQOL-bref, utilizando-se Teste t independente e Coeficiente de Correlação de Spearman. RESULTADOS: Foi encontrada correlação positiva entre o domínio ambiental do WHOQOL-bref e classe econômica (0,56), e escolaridade do cuidador (0,389). Houve diferença significante entre os subgrupos de maior e menor classe econômica nos domínios ambiental (p = 0,001) e psicológico (p = 0,031), e entre os subgrupos de maior e menor nível escolar no domínio ambiental (p = 0,049). CONCLUSÃO: A qualidade de vida dos cuidadores parece ser influenciada pelo nível socioeconômico e não pelo nível de função motora da criança com PC.

INTRODUCTION: Children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) have disabilities and limitations that generate dependence in relation to their caregivers. OBJECTIVE: Assess whether the quality of life of caregivers of children with CP is related to motor impairment, economic class and education of the caregiver. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We interviewed 45 informal caregivers of children with CP using the WHOQOL-bref and economic classification of Associação Brasileira de Empresas de Pesquisas (Abep). Children were classified using the Gross Motor Function Classification System. We conducted tests of association and correlation of variables with domains of the WHOQOL-bref, using independent t test and Spearman correlation coefficient. RESULTS: A positive correlation was found between the environmental domain of WHOQOL-bref and economic status (0.56) and education of the caregiver (0.389). There were significant differences between subgroups of higher and lower economic class in the environmental (p = 0.001) and psychological (p = 0.031), and among subgroups of high and low level of education in the environmental field (p = 0.049). CONCLUSIONS: The quality of life of caregivers appears to be influenced by socioeconomic level and not by the level of motor function of children with CP.

Begomoviruses are whitefly-transmitted single-stranded DNA viruses of great economic importance in the tropics and subtropics. Several begomovirus species have been reported in tomatoes in Brazil, but only a few predominate in the field, for unknown reasons. In this study begomovirus-infected tomato samples were collected in Viçosa, State of Minas Gerais, in Nov/2009 and Dec/2010. Viral genomes were amplified, cloned and sequenced. A total of 36 DNA-A components were obtained. Sequence comparisons indicated the presence of a single begomovirus, Tomato severe rugose virus (ToSRV), with pairwise identities between isolates ranging from 97.3 to 100%. Subdivision tests indicated the existence of a single population. The analysis of variability descriptors indicated that the ToSRV population has a genetic variability similar to other begomovirus populations described in Brazil infecting tomato. Neutrality tests suggested the occurrence of purifying selection acting upon the population. Recombination analysis identified recombination events with begomoviruses from the weed species Sida micrantha. The wide distribution of ToSRV in the field and the detection of recombination indicate that continuous monitoring of viral populations in the field will be required to enable an efficient resistance-based control strategy for begomoviruses.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar a presença dos genes Ty-2 e Ty-3, de resistência a begomovírus, em acessos de tomateiro do Banco de Germoplasma de Hortaliças da Universidade Federal de Viçosa. Os oligonucleotídeos TO302 F/R e FLUW25 F/R foram utilizados em reações de PCR, para verificar a presença de marcadores relacionados aos genes Ty-2 e Ty-3, respectivamente. Observou-se a presença do gene Ty-2, em heterozigose na subamostra BGH-6881 (Solanum peruvianum), e do gene Ty-3, em homozigose nas subamostras BGH-6878, BGH-6897 (S. lycopersicum) e em heterozigose na subamostra BGH-6881. A identificação dos genes de resistência, com reações de PCR, representa um avanço para os programas de melhoramento de tomateiro no Brasil.

The objective of this work was to identify the presence of the genes begomovirus resistence Ty-2 and Ty-3 in tomato accessions of the Banco de Germoplasma de Hortaliças of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa. The oligonucleotides TO302 F/R and FLUW25 F/R were used in PCR analysis to verify the presence of markers associated to the genes Ty-2 and Ty-3, respectively. The Ty-2 gene was observed in heterozygosis in the accession BGH-6881 (Solanum peruvianum), and the Ty-3 gene in homozygosis in the accessions BGH-6878, BGH-6897 (S. lycopersicum), and in heterozygosis in acession BGH-6881. The identification of resistance genes, using PCR analysis, represents an advance for tomato breeding programs in Brazil.

O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar os efeitos da suplementação aguda (5 g.kg-1 durante uma semana) e crônica (1 g.kg-1 durante quatro e oito semanas) de creatina (Cr) sobre as concentrações plasmáticas de Creatina Quinase (CQ), Lactato Desidrogenase (LDH) e Aspartato Aminotransferase (AST), de ratos sedentários e exercitados (natação a 80% da carga máxima tolerada). Setenta e dois ratos Wistar machos (250 ± 10 g) foram utilizados e divididos igualmente em quatro grupos: ratos sedentários não suplementados (CON; n = 18); ratos exercitados não suplementados (NAT; n = 18); ratos sedentários e suplementados (CRE; n = 18); ratos exercitados e suplementados (CRE + NAT; n = 18). Ao final da primeira, quarta e oitava semanas, seis animais de cada grupo foram sacrificados. Os resultados demonstraram: 1) ao final da primeira semana elevação plasmática de CQ, LDH e AST nos grupos NAT-1 e CRE+NAT-1 em relação aos grupos CON-1 e CRE-1; 2) ao final da quarta semana valores superiores para CQ e LDH somente no grupo NAT-4; e 3) ao final da oitava semana, somente os valores de AST do grupo CRE-8 diferiram dos demais. Estes achados sugerem que a suplementação de Cr: 1) não afeta o dano muscular em ratos submetidos a uma semana de treinamento físico de alta intensidade em meio aquático; 2) pode ser capaz de reduzir o dano muscular após quatro semanas de treinamento; e 3) após oito semanas de suplementação de Cr, o dano muscular parece ser atenuado pelo próprio exercício, anulando os efeito da Cr.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the short-term (5 g.kg-1 to 1 week) and long-term (1 g.kg-1 to 4-8 weeks) creatine supplementation (Cr) on the Creatine Kinase (CK), Lactate Dehydrogenaze (LDH) and Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) plasmatic concentrations of sedentary and exercised (swimming to 80% of the tolerated maximum load) rats. Seventy two Wistar males rats (250 ± 10 g) were equally divided in four groups: sedentary rats without supplementation (CON; n = 18); exercised rats without supplementation (NAT; n = 18); sedentary rats with supplementation (CRE; n = 18); exercised rats with supplementation (CRE+NAT; n = 18). At the end of the first, fourth and eighth weeks six animals of each group were sacrificed. The results demonstrated: 1) improvement of CK, LDH and AST in NAT-1 and CRE+NAT-1 groups vs. CON-1 and CRE-1 groups after the first experimental week; 2) higher values of CK and LDH only NAT-4 group after four experimental weeks; and 3) only AST from CRE-8 group differed from other groups at the end of the eighth experimental week. These findings suggest that the Cr supplementation: 1) does not affect the muscle damage on swimming exercised rats after one week of high intensity training; 2) could be able to reduce the muscle damage after 4 weeks of training; and 3) after eight weeks of Cr supplementation, the muscle damage seems to be attenuated by the exercise, nullifying the effects of Cr.
