The Kruger National Park is the largest protected area in South Africa and one of the most extensively surveyed in sub-Saharan Africa. Scientific studies, passive sampling from rangers and citizen science records have resulted in comprehensive faunal species lists spanning the entire park. Albeit, numerous frog records from different sources exist, they reveal contrasting species assemblages for the northern reaches of the park. This inconsistency leads to problems in conducting ecological work and implementing conservation legislation, as the baseline data are not congruent across sources. This is problematic because the northern Kruger National Park is known as the Ramsar-declared Makuleke Wetland System. Although this system receives rigorous conservation efforts, there is a lack of a comprehensive and up-to-date list of frog species. In this study, we aimed to develop an updated regional baseline using a combination of published literature, citizen science and museum records, supplemented with active field surveys. Field surveys of the study region resulted in the identification of 18 species from 10 families of frogs. When combined with existing records, the Makuleke Contractual Park is expected to play host to at least 30 frog species. In addition to collating existing data into a single source, the field component of this study also revealed the first record of Tomopterna natalensis for the area during active surveys, reconfirmed the presence of several frogs, several of which have not been recorded in the region in over 50 years and provided the first confirmed national record of Afrixalus crotalus using phylogenetic reconstruction. CONSERVATION IMPLICATIONS: Comprehensive species lists are fundamental for robust management protocols and ecological research. By collating data from multiple sources, this article presents an improved and updated frog list for the region, which will aid conservation, management and any long-term wetland ecosystem monitoring efforts in the region.

RESUMO Drosophila suzukii é uma praga exótica identificada no Brasil em 2013, que tem potencial para causar danos quantitativos e qualitativos em pequenas fruteiras. Devido à sua ampla gama de hospedeiros, disponibilidade contínua de frutos e ciclo de vida curto, seu manejo é desafiador. A principal estratégia de controle atualmente utilizada é o uso de inseticidas. No entanto, essa estratégia de controle é altamente prejudicial à saúde humana e ao meio ambiente. A estratégia de iscas tóxicas reduz a aplicação de inseticidas na área total. Assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito de iscas tóxicas em adultos de Drosophila suzukii em condições de laboratório. Foram realizados quatro bioensaios com diferentes tratamentos, onde foram testadas diferentes formulações de iscas de pronto uso, caseiras e comerciais, e suas combinações com inseticida. 20 µL de cada isca tóxica foram oferecidos a 5 casais de D. suzukii com 5 dias de idade por 2 horas. A mortalidade adulta foi avaliada 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 24, 48, 72 e 96 horas após a exposição. Todas as iscas tóxicas causaram mortalidade variando de 10 a 65%. ABSTRACT Drosophila suzukii is an exotic pest identified in Brazil in 2013 that has the potential to cause quantitative and qualitative losses to small fruit crops. Its wide range of hosts and short life cycle combined with continuous fruit availability make its management challenging. Insecticide application is the main control strategy currently used; however, this control method is highly harmful to human health and the environment. The strategy of using toxic bait contributes to reductions in insecticide application in in terms of total area. Thus, this study aimed to assess the effect of toxic baits on adult Drosophila suzukii under laboratory conditions. Four bioassays with different treatments were conducted to test different ready-to-use toxic baits, as well as homemade and commercial bait formulations combined with insecticide. Twenty µL of each toxic bait were offered to 5 five-day-old pairs of D. suzukii for 2 hours. Adult mortality was assessed at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours after exposure. All toxic baits caused mortality ranging from 10% to 65%. Resumo Contexto O pré-diabetes (PD) é definido como glicemia de jejum alterada e/ou tolerância à glicose alterada (TGA) e pode estar associado a alto risco de lesão cardiovascular. Recomenda-se discriminar quais pacientes com PD podem apresentar sinais de rigidez arterial e lesão cardiovascular para reforçar as estratégias terapêuticas. Objetivos Identificar os valores discriminativos da velocidade de onda de pulso determinantes de rigidez arterial e lesão cardiovascular em pacientes com PD. Métodos Estudo transversal em pacientes com PD (N=43) e normoglicêmicos (N=37) submetidos a avaliação clínica, avaliação da rigidez arterial pela velocidade da onda de pulso carótido-femoral (cfPWV) utilizando SphygmoCor, análise laboratorial de sangue, investigação de alterações morfológicas e variáveis cardíacas funcionais por ecocardiograma transtorácico e avaliação da espessura íntima-média carotídea (EIMC) pela ultrassonografia da carótida. A análise estatística foi realizada no software SPSS, e valores de p<0,05 foram considerados significativos. Resultados Foi identificado um valor de corte cfPWV de 6,9 m/s para TGA (sensibilidade 74% e especificidade 51%). A comparação dos dados e fatores de risco entre valores acima e abaixo do valor de corte estabelecido revelou glicemia de jejum elevada (p=0,02), obesidade (p=0,03), dislipidemia (p=0,004), sinais precoces de função diastólica prejudicada do ventrículo esquerdo (p=0,017) e ventrículo direito (p=0,03) e maior EIMC em cfPWV ≥6,9m/s (p=0,04). Conclusões Em pacientes com PD, o cfPWV de 6,9 m/s foi considerado um valor discriminativo de rigidez arterial. Abstract Background Prediabetes (PD) is defined as impaired fasting glucose and/or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and may be associated with high risk of cardiovascular injury. It is recommended that PD patients be screened for signs of arterial stiffness and cardiovascular injury to reinforce therapeutic strategies. Objectives To identify pulse wave velocity values discriminative for arterial stiffness and cardiovascular injury in PD patients. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with PD (N=43) and normoglycemic (N=37) patients who underwent clinical evaluation, arterial stiffness assessment by carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) using SphygmoCor, laboratory blood analysis, investigation of morphological and functional cardiac variables by transthoracic echocardiogram, and assessment of carotid intima-media-thickness (CIMT) by carotid ultrasonography. A statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software and values of p<0.05 were considered significant. Results A cfPWV cut-off value of 6.9 m/s was identified for IGT (Sensitivity [SE]: 74% and Specificity [SP]: 51%). Comparison of general data and risk factors between subsets with values above and below this cutoff value revealed higher rates of fasting glucose (p=0.02), obesity (p=0.03), dyslipidemia (p=0.004), early signs of left ventricle (p=0.017) and right ventricle (p=0.03) impaired diastolic function, and elevated CIMT in subjects with cfPWV ≥ 6.9m/s (p=0.04). Conclusions In PD patients, a cfPWV cutoff of 6.9 m/s was considered a discriminative value for arterial stiffness. These findings highlight the value of early investigation of cardiovascular injury and aggressive therapy strategies with good control of risk factors in PD. BACKGROUND: The extension of medicine prescription rights to other healthcare providers was proposed to reduce pharmacotherapeutic service delivery challenges in the South African healthcare sector. The scope of practice of physiotherapists is being reviewed to possibly include prescription rights to promote service delivery OBJECTIVES: Our study assessed the attitudes of registered South African physiotherapists to the inclusion of prescription rights in their scope of practice, including enablers and challenges, and the drug classes they believe to be most relevant METHOD: A cross-sectional descriptive survey of South African registered physiotherapists was completed using an online questionnaire RESULTS: A total of 359 participants completed the questionnaire, where 88.2% agreed that prescribing rights should be introduced, and 87.64% would want to be trained to prescribe. Participants identified several benefits: improved service delivery (91.3%); reduced healthcare delivery costs (89.8%); decreased need for multiple healthcare practitioner consultations (93.2%). Concerns included: inadequate training (55%); increased workload (18.7%); increased insurance premiums against medical liability claims (46.2%). Drugs of relevance included analgesics (95.6%) and bronchodilators (96.0%), while low preference was placed on drugs unrelated to physiotherapy. Chi-square analysis revealed associations between specific drug classes and fields of expertise CONCLUSION: South African physiotherapists agree that prescribing and a limited formulary would benefit their scope of practice; however, educational concerns are evident CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Findings support the drive to extend the South African physiotherapy scope of practice, however, investigation will be needed to determine the most appropriate way to capacitate future physiotherapists and current graduates should the extension be approved

Lycodonomorphus is a genus of lamprophiid water snake endemic in Africa. Although widespread, abundant and presumably an important component of many aquatic and semi-aquatic food webs, these snakes are poorly understood taxonomically, particularly from a phylogenetic perspective. With only four of the nine species currently sequenced, this study attempts to improve our understanding of the evolutionary relationships within the genus through the phylogenetic placement of one of the most elusive species, Lycodonomorphus obscuriventris. Collected in the Ramsar declared Makuleke Wetlands in northern Kruger National Park (South Africa), the sample used in this study not only yielded the first DNA sequences for the taxon but also represented the most northerly South African record, bridging the gap between the southern and northern populations. The snake was sequenced for three partial mitochondrial genes (16S, Cyt-b, ND4) and one partial nuclear gene (c-mos) and phylogenetically placed, relative to the rest of the genus, using maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI). Sequence divergences between sister taxa were also estimated using pairwise distance analysis. The concatenated phylogenetic reconstruction yielded similar topological structuring when compared to phylogenies from past articles, with both the ML and BI algorithms recovering strong support for L. obscuriventris as sister to a clade comprising of L. whytii + L. laevissimus + L. rufulus. The phylogenetic placement, albeit based on a single sample, challenges the original placement (morphological) of L. obscuriventris as sub-specific within L. whytii, suggesting that multiple species concepts should be considered when delineating species within this group. CONSERVATION IMPLICATIONS: Prior to the discovery of the new record, the global distribution of L. obscuriventris was characterised by two disjunct populations. The new record bridges the distribution gap between these two populations, rendering the distribution continuous. This bodes well for the species as there is likely no barrier to gene flow, thereby buffering the species from localised threats given the more expansive distribution. Furthermore, given that the specimen was sampled from the Kruger National Park, the species is likely to be well-protected as much of its distribution within South Africa seems to fall within protected areas

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To determine if the combination of serum uric acid and albumin levels from weeks 20 to 24 of gestation are predictors of severe preeclampsia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective and observational case-control study was carried out, in which the levels of uric acid and albumin taken during the 20th to 24th week were analyzed and compared with patients who developed severe preeclampsia. The data was collected in Microsoft Excel for Mac version 2019 and the statistical analysis was performed in SPSS for Mac version 25. RESULTS: 122 cases and 199 controls were obtained. Elevation of uric acid levels (≥4.9 mg/dL) and hypoalbuminemia (<3.5 mg/dL) obtained statistical significance for severe preeclampsia compared to the control group (p <0.001). The logistic regression model obtained an OR to predict severe preeclampsia of 6.736 (CI95% 2.5-17.7) for uric acid elevation and OR of 11.337 (CI95% 4.5-28.3) for hypoalbuminemia (p <0.001). CONCLUSION: In this study the statistically significant relationship was observed between the increase in uric acid levels and serum hypoalbuminemia from weeks 20 to 24 as predictive biomarkers of severe preeclampsia. However, more studies should be carried out to verify its clinical utility.

Resumen: OBJETIVO: Establecer si la la combinación de las concentraciones séricas de ácido úrico y albúmina en las semanas 20 a 24 del embarazo es predictora de preeclampsia severa. MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS: Estudio de casos y controles, retrospectivo y observacional, en el que se analizaron las concentraciones de ácido úrico y de albúmina coexistentes en las semanas 20 a 24; posteriormente se compararon las diferencias con pacientes con preeclampsia severa. Se recabaron los datos en Microsoft Excel para Mac versión 2019 y el análisis estadístico se realizó en SPSS para Mac versión 25. RESULTADOS: Se obtuvieron 122 casos y 199 controles. La elevación de las concentraciones de ácido úrico (≥ 4.9 mg/dL) y la hipoalbuminemia (menos de 3.5 mg/dL) tuvieron significación estadística para preeclampsia severa versus el grupo control (p < 0.001). El modelo de regresión logística obtuvo una razón de momios para predecir preeclampsia con datos de severidad de 6.736 (IC95%: 2.5-17.7) para la elevación del ácido úrico y razón de momios de 11.337 (IC95%: 4.5-28.3) para la hipoalbuminemia (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIÓN: El aumento en las concentraciones de ácido úrico (medidas entre las semanas 20 a 24 de embarazo) en combinación con la albúmina sérica tiene utilidad predictora de preeclampsia severa. Sin embargo, deben efectuarse más estudios clínicos para comprobar su eficacia y poder reducir la prevalencia de esta enfermedad.

BACKGROUND: It was proposed that if we assess an individual's mental schema, it may facilitate a better understanding of the psychological contract formation process. This will add a theoretical contribution to the anticipatory psychological contract research, as it will enhance our understanding of the specific terms of the psychological contract, which are only present during the organisation entry phase. AIM: We aimed at developing and validating an instrument to measure the psychological contract expectation of university graduate labour market entrees. This information could enhance our knowledge of both the anticipatory psychological contract and psychological contract development. SETTING: The research was conducted on third-year students from two different campuses of a South African university. The sample consisted of a total of 316 participants. METHODS: We used an exploratory quantitative research approach to measure prospective employees' anticipatory psychological contract. The newly developed Psychological Contract Expectations Questionnaire (PCEQ) was administered and analysed RESULTS: Results indicated that some of the instruments within the PCEQ are reliable and valid to measure the anticipatory psychological contract of graduates. The descriptive statistics and correlation coefficient results clearly enhanced our understanding of how the anticipatory psychological contract works. CONCLUSION: Our research contributes to anticipatory psychological contract research by introducing the PCEQ questionnaire to effectively measure the anticipatory obligations, anticipatory expectations, entitlement and anticipatory state of the psychological contract of prospective employees' mental schema.

Resumo A identidade de tradutor e intérprete entrou em foco com a “virada cultural” na primeira década do novo milênio (Pym 2004) e ainda mais na década de 2010 com a “virada sociológica” nos estudos da tradução e interpretação (Wolf 2012). Neste artigo, exploramos de duas maneiras narrativas como uma abordagem para compreender a identidade complexa de intérpretes, não raramente conflitiva. No sentido teórico, entendemos que interpretar é processar, adaptar e reconstruir narrativasde uma forma cognitiva que seja compatível, acessível e aceitável para todas as partes envolvidas, com base em Humboldt (1999), Wittgenstein (1922), Eco (1986), Blikstein (1997) e outros, assim como Baker (2006), que descreve o mundo como uma projeção de narrativas conflitantes que são, ao mesmo tempo, a própria razão para a necessidade de interpretação e para conflitos de identidade de intérpretes. Por outro lado, analisamos narrativas literárias sobre intérpretes ou escritas por intérpretes para ilustrar as descobertas da primeira parte deste artigo.

Abstract Translator and interpreter identity came into focus with the “cultural turn” in the first decade of the new millennium (Pym 2004) and even more in the 2010s with the “sociological turn” in translation and interpreting studies (Wolf 2012). In this paper we explore narratives as an approach to understanding complex and not rarely conflictive interpreter identities in two ways. In a theoretical sense we understand that interpreting is to process, adapt and reconstruct narratives in a cognitive way that is compatible with, accessible and acceptable for all partiesinvolved, based on Humboldt (1999), Wittgenstein (1922), Eco (1986), Blikstein (1997), and others as well as on Baker (2006) who describes the world as a projection of conflicting narratives that are the same time the very reason for the need for interpreting and for identity conflicts of interpreters. On the other hand, we look at literary narratives about interpreters or written by interpreters to illustrate the findings of the first part of this article.

ABSTRACT The high susceptibility to diseases of fine table grapes cultivars demand intensive use of pesticides, and the presence of water on the leaf surface can worsen the deposition of these products. The objective of this study was to evaluate the spray deposition in vine leaves in different conditions of leaf wetness, and test the effectiveness of an artificial ventilation method to remove water on the leaf surface. We evaluated the spray deposition in vine applied over: wet canopy (presence of high leaf wetness); canopy dried artificially (dried with air jet from air-assisted sprayer, wind speed of 25 km h−1) and canopy dried naturally (naturally dried leaves and free of water on its surface). Saline marker was used in the spray and the deposition on the canopy was determined by conductimetry. A pesticide application in vine, with the presence of water in the leaf surface, causes losses by run-off and reduces the deposit of spraying. The use of air jet formed by air-assisted sprayer fan is efficient for the removal of water on the vine leaf surface and its use can increase the favorable period for the application of pesticides without causing dilution and losses by run-off of the applied product.

Abstract Objective The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of two desensitizing agents and water on hydraulic conductance in human dentin. Material and Methods GLUMA Desensitizer PowerGel (GLU) contains glutaraldehyde (GA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and Teethmate Desensitizer (TD) is a powder comprising tetracalcium phosphate (TTCP) and dicalcium phosphate anhydrous (DCPA) that is mixed with water. Deionized water was used as a negative control (CTR). Thirty discs with a thickness of 1.2 mm were cut from the coronal dentin of the third molars and cleaned with 0.5 M EDTA (pH 7.4). After being mounted in a split-chamber device, the discs were pressurized with water at 1 kPa and 3 kPa in order to measure flow rates with a highly sensitive micro-flow sensor and to calculate hydraulic conductance as a baseline value (BL). Following the application of GLU, TD, and CTR (n=10), hydraulic conductance was remeasured with intermittent storage in water after 15 min, 1 d, 1 w, and 1 m. Reduction in permeability (PR%) was calculated from hydraulic conductance. Data were statistically analyzed using nonparametric methods (α<0.05). Representative discs were inspected by SEM. Results PR% for GLU and TD were 30-50% 15 min and 1 m after their application. Post hoc tests indicated that PR% of CTR was significantly greater than those of GLU and TD at all time points tested. The PR% of GLU and TD were not significantly different. SEM examinations showed noncollapsed collagen meshes at the tubular entrances after GLU, and crystalline precipitates occluding the tubular orifices after TD, whereas CTR specimens showed typical patterns of etched dentin. Conclusions The present study on hydraulic conductance in dentin discs treated with two chemically different desensitizing agents and water as a control demonstrated that both products may be characterized as effective.

Nesta seção são discutidos em profundidade a espectroscopia por ressonância magnética, FDG-PET and imagem com marcadores de peptide beta amilóide.

ABSTRACT. In this Part II review, as a complement to the Part I published in this supplement, the authors cover the imaging techniques that evaluates the Alzheimer's disease according to the different metabolic and molecular profiles. In this section MR spectroscopy, FDG-PET and amyloid PET are deeply discussed.

The bacanora industry in the state of Sonora, México faces complex arrays of cultural, technological, economic and legal factors that inhibit its development. This happens despite the institutional efforts to create a regulatory framework to eliminate informal methods of preparation that result in liquor of heterogeneous quality. Enforcement of the framework is complicated by poor verification practices of existing rules in the Protected Designation of Origin. This document describes the use of a Fourier Transform Raman spectrometer prototype for qualitatively analyzing samples of bacanora. This measurement technique could assist in production of bacanora that complies with quality standards. This device can be built inexpensively by combining a conventional Michelson interferometer, a in-house designed photon counter, and a reference photo-detector. The advantages of this measurement technique are described; certain implications related to the use of this method in bacanora production are also analyzed from different perspectives. The results of the study confirm that this instrument and technique, due to its low cost in manufacturing and operation, are easily adaptable options to the needs of producers and researchers, and they could assist bacanora production that meets quality standards outlined in regulations.

La industria del bacanora en Sonora, México, enfrenta la influencia de una compleja red de factores culturales, tecnológicos, económicos y legales que inhiben su desarrollo. Ello ocurre pese al esfuerzo institucional por radicar un marco normativo que elimine la práctica de los métodos informales de elaboración que derivan en calidades heterogéneas de licor. El conseguirlo se complica ante la dificultad que enfrentan los actores de esta industria para implementar prácticas efectivas de verificación de las normas vigentes en los confines de la geografía de la Denominación de Origen. En este documento se describe el uso de un prototipo de espectrómetro Raman por transformada de Fourier para analizar cualitativamente muestras desconocidas de bacanora. Este dispositivo se construyó con el uso de un interferómetro Michelson convencional, un contador de fotones de diseño propio y un foto-detector de referencia. Los resultados del trabajo confirman que dada su naturaleza de diseño y construcción, este instrumento de medición y su efectiva técnica de operación a bajo costo, constituye una alternativa viable, adaptable fácilmente a las necesidades de los actores productivos e institucionales, para asistirlos en la elaboración de bacanora y a la verificación de su calidad conforme a los criterios de la normatividad.
