Resumo Invasões biológicas são uma das maiores ameaças à biodiversidade e à boa qualidade de vida, ocorrendo a partir da translocação de espécies por ação humana. Existem mais de 500 espécies exóticas invadindo ecossistemas atualmente no Brasil, com destaque para plantas e peixes. Pouco se sabe sobre microrganismos invasores. Apesar de existirem espécies exóticas invasoras em todos os ecossistemas no país, a maior parte dos registros foi feita em hábitats com maior interferência humana, como áreas urbanas, periurbanas, terras cultivadas, represas, reservatórios, portos e canais. Historicamente, as regiões sul e sudeste do Brasil apresentam mais espécies exóticas invasoras, mas nas últimas décadas se tem observado um aumento no número de espécies exóticas invasoras nas regiões centro-oeste e norte. O comércio de plantas e peixes ornamentais, assim como o comércio ilegal de mamíferos e répteis silvestres como animais de estimação são algumas das principais vias de introdução e disseminação de espécies exóticas invasoras no Brasil. Sistemas de criação e cultivo que possibilitam o escape para áreas naturais são uma relevante via de introdução em ecossistemas de águas continentais, enquanto introduções não intencionais a partir de navegação e de infraestrutura são de extrema preocupação em ecossistemas marinhos. Os impactos negativos de espécies exóticas invasoras sobre a biota incluem principalmente alterações na estrutura de comunidades e diminuição local da riqueza de espécies nativas, mediados por predação, competição e modificações ecossistêmicas. A maior parte dos impactos negativos registrados ocorreram para espécies introduzidas intencionalmente, como peixes e plantas, mas introduções não intencionais têm levado a impactos na boa qualidade de vida, com custos associados e impactos sobre a saúde humana. A gestão de invasões biológicas esbarra em desafios a serem superados, tais como a falta de conhecimento do público sobre o impacto de espécies exóticas invasoras, o apelo popular de espécies invasoras carismáticas ou utilizadas por humanos e o emprego de técnicas controversas de controle. Entretanto, experiências bem-sucedidas de erradicação e controle em ecossistemas terrestres e marinhos têm sido registrados, alguns deles envolvendo engajamento público nas ações de manejo. Abstract Biological invasions are one of the major threats to biodiversity and good quality of life, resulting from the translocation of species by human action. There are more than 500 alien species currently invading ecosystems in Brazil, particularly plants and fishes, while little is known about invasive microorganisms. Although invasive alien species are present in all ecosystems in the country, most have been recorded in habitats with greater human interference, such as urban and peri-urban areas, farmland, dams, reservoirs, ports, and canals. Historically, the southern and southeastern regions of Brazil have had more invasive alien species, but there has been an increase in the number of invasive alien species in the central-western and northern regions in recent decades. The ornamental trade of plants and fishes as well as the illegal pet trade of wild mammals and reptiles are some of the main pathways for invasive species introduction and spread in Brazil. Breeding and cultivation systems that allow escape to natural areas are a relevant route of species introductions in freshwater ecosystems, while unintentional introductions from shipping and infrastructure are of extreme concern in marine ecosystems. The negative impacts of invasive alien species on the biota mainly include changes in community structure and local decrease in native species richness, mediated by predation, competition, and ecosystem changes. Most negative impacts are recorded for intentionally introduced species, such as fishes and plants, but unintentional introductions have led to impacts on good quality of life, with associated costs and impacts on human health. The management of biological invasions faces challenges that need to be overcome, such as the lack of public knowledge about the impact of invasive alien species, the popular appeal of charismatic invasive species or those used by humans, and the use of controversial control techniques. However, successful experiences of eradication and control in terrestrial and marine ecosystems have been recorded, some of them involving public engagement in management actions. Resumo Objetivo Investigamos as características tróficas e reprodutivas de populações do guppy Poecilia reticulata e plati Xiphophorus maculatus ferais em um riacho de cabeceira localizado na bacia do rio Paraíba do Sul, sudeste do Brasil. Métodos Exemplares foram coletados bimestralmente de janeiro a dezembro de 2017 utilizando-se peneira no riacho Lopes. Os itens alimentares foram analisados e os estágios de desenvolvimento embrionário de fêmeas foram classificados como 1 (Não grávida), 2 (Ovo), 3 (Embrião com olhos) e 4 (Embrião formado). Os valores médios da fecundidade e estrutura populacional para cada estágio de desenvolvimento embrionário foram determinados para as fêmeas usando seis classes de comprimento. Os valores médios bimestrais do Índice Gonadossomático de fêmeas foram associados com a precipitação média bimestral, nível/temperatura da água e a razão sexual foi calculada. A proporção juvenil-adulto foi calculada bimestralmente, e os fenótipos ornamental/selvagem também foram analisados. Resultados O guppy e plati se alimentaram especialmente de detritos, e ambas espécies apresentaram atividade reprodutiva durante todo o período amostral. A fecundidade média de P. reticulata e X. maculatus foi alta e a menor fêmea grávida de guppy mediu < 1,0 cm e plati 1,0 cm CP. O IGS de ambas as espécies apresentaram picos coincidindo com maior precipitação, nível/temperatura da água, sendo as fêmeas mais numerosas que machos. Juvenis foram encontrados durante todo o período amostral, e ambas as espécies foram representadas pelo fenótipo selvagem. Conclusões P. reticulata e X. maculatus apresentaram alimentação oportunista, longo período reprodutivo, alta fecundidade e maturidade precoce. Abstract Aim We investigated trophic and reproductive traits of feral guppy Poecilia reticulata and southern platyfish Xiphophorus maculatus in a headwater creek located in the Paraíba do Sul River basin, southeastern Brazil. Methods Fish were collected bimonthly from January to December 2017 using sieve in Lopes Creek. Stomach items were analyzed and developmental stages of females were classified as 1 (Non-gravid), 2 (Yolked ova), 3 (Eyed embryos), and 4 (Mature embryos). The mean values of fecundity and population structure for each developmental stage were determined for females using six length classes. Bimonthly mean values of gonadosomatic index of females were overlayed with average bimonthly rainfall, water level/temperature, and the sex ratio was calculated. The juvenile-to-adult proportion was calculated bimonthly, and the phenotype (ornamental-type × wild-type) was also analyzed. Results The guppy and southern platyfish fed, primarily, on detritus, and both species showed reproductive activity during all the sampling period. The mean fecundity of P. reticulata and X. maculatus was high and the smallest gravid female of guppy measured 0.8 cm SL, and southern platyfish 1.0 cm. The GSI of both species showed peaks coinciding with the highest rainfall, water level/temperature, and females were significantly more frequent than males. Juveniles were found during all the sampling period, and both species were represented by wild-type forms. Conclusions P. reticulata and X. maculatus presented opportunistic feeding, long reproductive period, high fecundity and early maturity. The year-round presence of reproductive females, juveniles and wild-type phenotypes suggests establishment of populations in the study area. Resumo Objetivo O black-bass Micropterus salmoides foi introduzido em mais de 50 países para fins de pesca esportiva. No Brasil, os primeiros registros datam de 1922 e atualmente muitas populações são conhecidas na região sul. Neste trabalho investigamos a biologia reprodutiva desta espécie em um pequeno reservatório no sul do Brasil, para entender o papel da estratégia reprodutiva no processo de invasão e auxiliar no manejo. Concluímos com sugestões para o manejo em escala local, pois esta espécie pode trazer problemas relevantes ao abastecimento público através da cascata trófica e outros efeitos negativos. Métodos As amostragens foram realizadas com diferentes métodos, entre maio de 2011 e abril de 2012. Todos os peixes foram medidos, e a época reprodutiva foi determinada através da frequência relativa dos estádios reprodutivos e do índice gonadossomático. A razão sexual foi calculada mensalmente para cada classe de comprimento total (CT) e comparada com as estimativas apresentadas na literatura. O comprimento total de primeira maturidade (L50, comprimento em que 50% dos indivíduos estavam maduros) foi estimado para fêmeas, machos e toda a população de estudo. Resultados Um total de 565 indivíduos de M. salmoides foi analisado. A razão geral entre os sexos não foi significativa. A distribuição mensal do índice gonadossomático para fêmeas e machos apresentou maiores valores entre agosto (final do inverno) e novembro de 2011 (primavera austral). A modelagem ��-binomial dos dados de proporção sexual de populações nativas (n=1) e introduzidas (n=7) mostrou uma menor proporção de fêmeas em sua área nativa. Todos os indivíduos > 21,5 cm CT eram maduros (L95), e o L50 calculado foi de 18,7 cm TL. Após o período reprodutivo, foi registrado um aumento na abundância de indivíduos jovens (≤ 7,0 cm CP), correspondendo a 50% de todos os indivíduos coletados. A frequência relativa de indivíduos maduros e a variação do índice gonadossomático indicam um período prolongado de desova durante a primavera austral, coincidindo com o aumento da temperatura. Conclusões Os resultados sugerem que algumas mudanças nas características de vida, como a maturação sexual precoce e o longo período reprodutivo, aliadas a uma notável adaptabilidade, podem ter facilitado o estabelecimento de populações de M. salmoides neste reservatório. A estocagem ilegal e intencional por pescadores tem papel central na introdução e dispersão de M. salmoides no Brasil. Abstract Aim The largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides was introduced in more than 50 countries for the purpose of sport fishing. In Brazil, records date from 1922, and nowadays many populations are known to occur in the southern region. Here we investigated the reproductive biology of this species in a small reservoir in southern Brazil, to understand the role of the reproductive strategy in the invasion process and assist in its management. We conclude with suggestions for the management in local scale, as this species can bring relevant problems to the public supply through trophic cascade and other negative effects. Methods Samples were performed with different methods, between May 2011 and April 2012. All fishes were measured, and the reproductive season was determined through the relative frequency of reproductive stages and the gonadosomatic index. Sex ratio was calculated monthly and for each total length (TL) class and compared with the estimates presented in the literature. Total length at maturity (L50, length at which 50% of the individuals were mature) was estimated for females, males and the entire study population. Results A total of 565 individuals of M. salmoides were analyzed. Overall sex-ratio did not differ significantly. The monthly distribution of the gonadosomatic index for females and males showed higher values between August (late winter) and November 2011 (austral spring). ��-Binomial modelling of sex-ratio data of native (n=1) and introduced populations (n=7) showed a lower proportion of females in its native range. All individuals > 21.5 cm TL were mature (L95), and L50 was calculated at 18.7 cm TL. After the reproductive period, an increase in the abundance of young individuals (≤ 7.0 cm TL) was registered, corresponding to 50% of all individuals collected. The relative frequency of mature individuals and the variation in the gonadosomatic index indicate a prolonged spawning period during the austral spring, coinciding with the increase in temperature. Conclusions Results suggested that some changes in life history traits, such as the early sexual maturation and the long reproductive period, coupled with a remarkable adaptability, may have facilitated the establishment of M. salmoides populations in this reservoir. The illegal and intentional stocking by anglers plays a central role in the introduction and dispersal of M. salmoides in Brazil. Resumo Objetivo O objetivo foi descrever os parâmetros LWR das espécies nativas e não nativas do rio Guaraguaçu e comparar esses parâmetros das espécies não nativas obtidos no rio Guaraguaçu com os parâmetros de LWR dos seus locais de distribuição nativa disponível na literatura. Métodos Os exemplares foram coletados semestralmente entre 2004 e 2007, usando diferentes técnicas de amostragens. Resultados No total, foram analisados 673 exemplares de 10 espécies. Seis espécies apresentaram alometria positiva (b>3) e três alometria negativa (b<3) e isometria (b=3). Espécies nativas possuem parâmetros de LWR idênticos a estudos prévios, exceto Centropomus parallelus, a qual apresentou isometria neste estudo. As espécies não nativas Clarias gariepinus e Ictalurus punctatus demonstraram diferenças significativas entre os parâmetros de LWR do Guaraguaçu e das suas áreas de distribuição nativa. Oreochromis niloticus não apresentou diferença significativa entre os parâmetros de LWR entre o Guaraguaçu e sua área nativa de distribuição. Conclusões O resultado indica que as condições ambientais talvez não influenciem o crescimento das espécies não nativas, o que explicaria o sucesso de invasão destas espécies.

Abstract Aim The objective was to describe the LWR of fish species of the Guaraguaçu River, as well as to compare the LWR parameters of the non-native species with the parameters obtained in their native ranges, available in the literature. Methods In this study, the LWR of 10 fish species of the Guaraguaçu River, southern Brazil, were analyzed. Fish were sampled semiannually between 2004 and 2007, using different sampling techniques in the Guaraguaçu River. Results A total of 673 specimens of 10 species were captured. The LWR demonstrated a prevalence of species (six out of 10) with positive allometric growth (b > 3). The remaining species presented isometric (b = 3, two species) or negative growth (b < 3, two species). Native species exhibited the same LWR from previous studies, except Centropomus parallelus, which presented an isometric growth in this study. The non-native species Clarias gariepinus and Ictalurus punctatus showed significant differences between the LWR parameters in the Guaraguaçu River and in their native distribution, but the same growth pattern. Oreochromis niloticus did not present significant differences in the allometric coefficient from its native range. Conclusions These results indicate that different environmental conditions may not influence the growth pattern of non-native species, which explains their invasion success due to high adaptability to new environments.

Resumo Predadores não-nativos são conhecidos por causar impactos ecológicos com o aumento do consumo de recursos e do declínio das espécies nativas. Uma dessas espécies é Micropterus salmoides. Frequentemente introduzida ao redor do mundo para pesca esportiva; essa espécie foi listada pela União Internacional para a Conservação da Natureza como uma das 100 piores espécies invasoras do mundo. Embora os impactos nas presas nativas sejam bem conhecidos, sua relação com outras espécies não-nativas tem recebido muito menos atenção. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo foi pesquisar experimentalmente a preferência alimentar de M. salmoides por presas nativas (Geophagus iporangensis) em comparação com presas não-nativas (Oreochromis niloticus e Coptodon rendalli) comparando o consumo e o índice de seletividade de Manly-Chesson. Encontramos que M. salmoides tem um maior consumo de presas não-nativas e uma tendência de aumento de preferência pela presa não-nativa com o aumento da disponibilidade de presas. Nossos resultados são consistentes com a hipótese de que a invasão do predador não-nativo pode ser facilitada pela grande abundância e capacidade reprodutiva de presas não-nativas. Isso é relevante considerando a interação de múltiplos invasores em um ecossistema, particularmente em ambientes modificados pelo homem. Relações interespecíficas são complexas e seu entendimento é necessário para a tomada de decisões de gestão ambiental.

Abstract Non-native predators are known to cause ecological impacts through heightened consumption of resources and decimation of native species. One such species is Micropterus salmoides. Often introduced for sport fishing worldwide; it has been listed by International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources as one of the 100 of the world’s worst invasive species. Whilst impacts conferred towards native prey are well known, its relationship with other non-native species has received much less attention. Therefore, the aim of this study was to experimentally investigate the feeding preference of M. salmoides towards native prey (Geophagus iporangensis) compared to non-native prey (Oreochromis niloticus and Coptodon rendalli) using comparative consumption and the Manly-Chesson selectivity index. We found a higher consumption by M. salmoides towards the non-native prey and a tendency for this non-native preference to increase when prey availability increased. Our results are in line with the hypothesis that the invasion of the non-native predator can be facilitated by the high abundance and reproductive rate of the non-native prey. This is relevant considering the interaction of multiple invaders in an ecosystem, in particular environments modified by humans. Interspecific relationships are complex and their understanding is necessary for environmental management decision-making.

Resumo: Objetivo Este artigo tem como objetivo reunir e atualizar os registros de espécies não-nativas em um rio subtropical do sul do Brasil, alertando para os impactos que podem exercer neste, e em outros corpos hídricos. Métodos Foi realizado um monitoramento no rio Guaraguaçu, o maior rio da planície costeira do Paraná, localizado no bioma Mata Atlântica. Os peixes foram amostrados em dois períodos: de 2002 a 2007 (mensalmente) e de 2016 a 2018 (semestralmente), e os demais organismos foram coletados em amostragens isoladas. Resultados O monitoramento registrou a presença de seis espécies de animais não-nativos neste rio – quatro espécies de peixe (Clarias gariepinus, Ictalurus punctatus, Oreochromis niloticus e Salminus brasiliensis), um invertebrado (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) e um foraminífero (Ammoglobigerina globigeriniformis), introduzidos principalmente através de escapes de aquicultura, para pesca esportiva ou por água de lastro. Tais introduções são um problema, pois, têm o potencial de impactar negativamente as espécies nativas ameaçadas de extinção neste rio através de predação, competição ou introdução de novas doenças. Conclusões No rio Guaraguaçu o crescente número de introduções é preocupante, pois estas espécies têm em comum um conjunto de características que as tornam potenciais invasoras. Continuar o monitoramento de suas populações é fundamental para detectar e minimizar seus impactos negativos na biota nativa, uma vez que há na região uma unidade de conservação (Estação Ecológica Guaraguaçu), com o objetivo de proteger o ambiente em sua condição prístina.

Abstract: Aim This paper aims to concatenate and update the records of non-native species in a subtropical River, in Southern Brazil, warning about their possible impacts in this and other water bodies. Methods Monitoring was carried out in the Guaraguaçu River, the largest River of the Paraná coastal plain, located in the Atlantic Rainforest biome. Fishes were sampled in two periods: from 2002 to 2007 (monthly) and from 2016 to 2018 (semiannually), and the other organisms were collected in isolated samplings. Results The monitoring recorded the presence of six non-native species of animals in this River – four species of fish (Clarias gariepinus, Ictalurus punctatus, Oreochromis niloticus and Salminus brasiliensis), one invertebrate (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) and one foraminifera (Ammoglobigerina globigeriniformis) introduced by escapes from aquaculture, sport fishing and ballast water. These introductions are problematic because they have the potential to impact upon the endangered native species in the River through predation, competition or novel diseases. Conclusions In Guaraguaçu River the increasing number of introductions is worrying because these species have in common a set of traits that turns them into potential invaders. It is of great importance to keep monitoring their populations in order to detect and minimize their negative impacts on native biota, once there is a conservation unit in the region (Guaraguaçu Ecological Station), with the aim to protect the environment in its pristine condition.

Resumo: Os peixes podem variar suas dietas e dinâmicas alimentares de acordo com fatores bióticos e abióticos. O conhecimento insuficiente desses fatores em reservatórios limita o manejo dessas áreas. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a dieta de duas espécies de peixes aparentados e mais coletados; verificar a influência de fatores bióticos e abióticos na dieta, e também verificar a existência da partilha de recursos entre essas espécies em um reservatório brasileiro de cabeceira. A abundância de peixes foi calculada e dados foram fornecidos por 176 espécimes de Iheringichthys labrosus (Lütken, 1874) e 255 espécimes de Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède, 1803 coletados no reservatório de Camargos, MG, Brasil. O conteúdo estomacal foi analisado pelos métodos de frequência de ocorrência e volumétrico. A análise de PERMANOVA foi realizada para avaliar a influência de fatores bióticos (Espécies e Classe de tamanho) e abióticos (Estação e Local) nas dietas. O Índice Alimentar (IA) e o Índice de sobreposição alimentar (Pianka) também foram estimados. Uma análise de NMDS foi conduzida para visualizar as categorias alimentares responsáveis pela diferença interespecífica. Os itens ingeridos foram agrupados em 18 categorias, das quais 17 foram encontradas em ambas as espécies. Os recursos alimentares foram significativamente relacionados aos fatores bióticos (Espécies: Pseudo F = 2.583, P = 0.001; Classe de tamanho: Pseudo F = 1.646, P = 0.001) e abióticos (Estação: Pseudo F = 2.458, P = 0.006). I. labrosus mostrou uma dieta invertívora e P. maculatus uma dieta onívora e ambas as espécies não foram exclusivamente bentófagas como normalmente descritas. A sobreposição alimentar ocorreu intraespecífica e interespecífica (Pianka 0,61 a 0,97 e 0,61 a 0,66, respectivamente) e a sobreposição também ocorreu em três das quatro estações analisadas (Pianka 0,66 a 0,91). A sobreposição de dieta encontrada entre duas das espécies mais pescadas e a baixa produtividade pesqueira podem indicar a limitação de recursos nesse reservatório e devem ser consideradas para o manejo dessa área.

Abstract: Fish can vary their diet and feeding dynamics according to biotic and abiotic factors. There is insufficient knowledge regarding these factors in reservoirs, which limits the management of these areas. The aim of this study was to determine the diet of two related and most collected fish species, verify the influence of biotic and abiotic factors on their diet, and also verify the existence of resource sharing by them in an upstream Brazilian reservoir. Fish abundance in the reservoir was calculated and data were provided by 176 specimens of Iheringichthys labrosus (Lütken, 1874) and 255 specimens of Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède, 1803 collected in Camargos reservoir, MG, Brazil. Stomach contents were analysed through the frequency of occurrence and volumetric methods. PERMANOVA analysis was done to evaluate the influence of biotic (Species and Size class) and abiotic factors (Season and Site) on the diets. The Alimentary Index (AI) and feeding overlap Index (Pianka) were also estimated. A NMDS analysis was conducted to visualize the food categories responsible for interspecific difference. The ingested items were grouped into 18 categories, of which 17 were found in both species. Feeding resources were significantly related to the biotic (Species: Pseudo F = 2.583, P = 0.001; Size Class: Pseudo F = 1.646, P = 0.001) and abiotic (Season: Pseudo F = 2.458, P = 0.006) factors. I. labrosus showed an invertivorous diet while P. maculatus an omnivorous diet and both species were not exclusively benthophagus as typically reported. Food overlap occurred intraspecifically and interspecifically (Pianka 0.61 to 0.97 and 0.61 to 0.66, respectively) and overlap also occurred in three of the four analysed seasons (Pianka 0.66 to 0.91). The diet overlap found between two of the most fished species and the low fish productivity may indicate the limitation of resources in this reservoir and should be considered for management of this area.

Abstract The Indo-Pacific swimming crab Charybdis hellerii (A. Milne-Edwards, 1867) is native to the Indo-Pacific Ocean, and occurs as an invasive species along the Eastern American coast, where it was probably introduced in ballast water. The present study evaluated the osmoregulation and salinity tolerance of C. hellerii in Paranaguá Bay, Paraná, Brazil, an estuary under the constant threat of introduction of non-native species. The crabs were abruptly submitted to salinities of 10, 20, 30 (control), and 40 PSU for 24h. Hemolymph osmolality showed either an increase or a decrease following the changes in water salinity, presenting a pattern of hyper-osmoconformation. Muscle water content was stable at salinities from 20 to 40 PSU, and increased after exposure to 10 PSU indicating cellular swelling. At 10 PSU a physiological limit was reached, indicated by the failure of the capacity to regulate tissue water content. Although adult C. hellerii tolerate a wide range of salinities for 24 h, its osmoregulatory ability indicates a possible advantage for its establishment in estuarine waters with salinities <20 PSU. The salinity tolerance and osmoregulatory data are important basic information to be used in models to predict and prevent the invasion of the species into new areas of the Neotropics.

Neste estudo foram investigados os hábitos alimentares do peixe anual Rivulus luelingi em um riacho de água escura da Floresta Atlântica Costeira do Sul do Brasil. Oito amostragens foram realizadas entre abril de 2003 e janeiro de 2004. A dieta, avaliada através de uma matriz de similaridade com os valores de contribuição estimados para os itens alimentares, inclui microcrustáceos, insetos imaturos aquáticos, insetos aquáticos e terrestres, fragmentos de insetos, aranhas e fragmentos de plantas. Diferenças relacionadas ao período amostral (meses) foram registradas, mas mudanças na dieta em função das classes de tamanho avaliadas e o período de alta/baixa precipitação não foram observadas. A espécie apresentou hábito alimentar insetívoro, e sua dieta no riacho estudado foi composta por itens autóctones (principalmente insetos imaturos aquáticos) e alóctones (principalmente fragmentos de insetos).

Feeding habits of the killifish Rivulus luelingi collected in a black water stream of the Coastal Atlantic Rainforest in southern Brazil were investigated. Eight samplings were made between April 2003 and January 2004. The diet, assessed through a similarity matrix with the estimated contribution values of food items, included microcrustaceans, aquatic immature insects (larvae and pupae), aquatic adult insects, terrestrial insects, insect fragments, spiders, and plant fragments. Differences in the diet according to temporal variations (months) were registered, but changes related with size classes evaluated and high/low precipitation period were not observed. The species presented an insectivorous feeding habit, and its diet in the studied stream was composed of autochthonous (mainly aquatic immature insects) and allochthonous (mainly insect fragments) material.

Aspectos da biologia de D. langei foram estudados em diferentes locais da bacia do rio Ribeirão, um riacho litorâneo da Floresta Atlântica do sudeste do Brasil. Foram observadas diferenças na estrutura da população e na reprodução, ao longo do gradiente longitudinal da bacia e do período de estudo. Os peixes juvenis ocorreram em grande abundância, principalmente no trecho a jusante da bacia, após os meses mais chuvosos. Adultos ocorreram principalmente nos trechos intermediários e a montante. Não houve diferença significativa na relação sexual entre os locais amostrados, estações do ano, meses e classes de comprimento. O comprimento médio de primeira maturação (L50) foi o mesmo para machos e fêmeas, entre 6,1 e 7,0 cm de comprimento total (Lt). O período reprodutivo foi curto (entre o final da primavera e início do verão), antes dos meses mais chuvosos, com desova total. O Índice de Atividade Reprodutiva (IAR) indicou que D. langei reproduz em toda a bacia, porém a atividade reprodutiva é mais intensa nos trechos mais a montante da bacia. O período chuvoso e as chuvas torrenciais se mostraram fatores abióticos muito importantes para a dinâmica da população. Durante seu ciclo de vida os adultos maximizam sua estratégia reprodutiva concentrando o período reprodutivo, com desova total em um curto espaço de tempo antes das chuvas de verão que carregam juvenis, formas larvais e/ou ovos para as regiões a jusante onde existe uma ampla quantidade de micro-ambientes (gramíneas submersas e áreas rasas e calmas). Desta forma a espécie estudada utilizou diferentes porções da bacia em distintos estágios de seu ciclo de vida, demonstrando estar ecologicamente adaptada às variações temporais e físicas do ambiente.

Aspects of the biology of D. langei were studied at different sites along a longitudinal gradient formed by the Ribeirão stream basin, a Neotropical stream of the Atlantic Forest, southern Brazil. Differences were observed in population structure and reproduction along the longitudinal gradient and during the study period. Juvenile fishes occurred in high abundance, mainly in the downstream site after the rainy months. Adults occurred mainly in the intermediate and upstream sites. During their life cycle, adults optimise their reproductive strategy by concentrating the reproductive period with total spawn in a short time interval before summer rains dragged the juvenile, larval forms and/or eggs downstream. The downstream site was characterized by a wide range of microhabitats (ex. submerged grass and shallow flooded area). Thus, the species used different portions of the basin in distinct stages of its life, being ecologically adapted to variation patterns in its temporal and physical environments.
