The energy absorption in ballistic tests of alumina-ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) composites with 60, 80 and 90 wt% alumina submitted to gamma radiation doses of 25, 50 and 75 kGy was investigated. The ballistic tests were carried out at subsonic speed using a compressed air system. The results showed that the composite with 80% alumina irradiated with 50 kGy yields the best ballistic results. Gel content, Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that this composite is the one with the highest concentration of crosslinks and the lowest volume fraction of amorphous UHMWPE. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the same composite showed a high pullout, suggesting that gamma irradiation increases the adhesion between alumina and UHMWPE.

The essential work of fracture (EWF) method provides useful parameters to characterize the fracture toughness of polymers exposed to degrading environments under conditions associated with plane-stress state of failure. Exposure of polymeric engineering materials to ultraviolet (UV) radiation may produce macromolecular changes that impair their fracture toughness. In the present work, for the first time, the EWF method applying a double edge notched tensile specimen was used to quantify the fracture toughness behavior of polycarbonate (PC) exposed to different, 300 h and 600 h, UV irradiation times. In addition, molar weight M ─ n determination, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and tensile tests were also investigated for non-irradiated and UV irradiated PC. The EWF results and scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed a significant reduction (39 % for 300h and 45 % for 600h of UV exposure) in fracture toughness associated with scission of the macromolecular chains. Other investigated properties, such as M ─ n, glass transition temperature, oxidation index and tensile strength, despite decreasing with UV exposure, did not show conclusive values.

This study aimed at evaluating the bacteriological effects of the treatment of sheep meat contaminated with total coliforms, coliforms at 45 °C and Salmonella spp. by using irradiation at doses of 3 kGy and 5 kGy. Thirty sheep meat samples were collected from animals located in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, and then grouped in three lots including 10 samples: non-irradiated (control); irradiated with 3 kGy; and irradiated with 5 kGy. Exposure to gamma radiation in a 137Cs source-driven irradiating facility was perfomed at the Nuclear Defense Section of the Brazilian Army Technological Center (CTEx) in Rio de Janeiro. The samples were kept under freezing temperature (-18 °C) until the analyses, which occurred in two and four months after irradiation. The results were interpreted by comparison with the standards of the current legislation and demonstrated that non-irradiated samples were outside the parameters established by law for all groups of bacteria studied. Gamma irradiation was effective in inactivating those microorganisms at both doses tested and the optimal dose was achieved at 3 kGy. The results have shown not only the need for sanitary conditions improvements in slaughter and processing of sheep meat but also the irradiation effectiveness to eliminate coliform bacteria and Salmonella spp.

In the present study the effects on shelf life and sensory acceptance of gamma-irradiated refrigerated poultry breast fillets subjected to modified atmosphere packaging (80% CO2/20% N2 or vacuum) were investigated. After irradiation with 2 kGy, sensory acceptance tests and monitoring of bacterial growth were performed in order to determine the sanitary quality of the samples. It has been found that irradiation, used in combination with modified atmosphere packaging, can double the shelf life of refrigerated poultry breast fillets by reducing the populations of aerobic mesophilic and psychrotrophic bacteria, enterobacteria, coliforms, Listeria spp. and Aeromonas spp., without significantly modifying its color or its overall appearance, the lactic acid bacteria being the most resistant to exposure to radiation and carbon dioxide.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar os efeitos dos processos de irradiação (com dose de 1,5kGy) e embalagem em atmosfera modificada (60% N2 e 40% CO2), aplicados isoladamente ou combinados, na extensão da validade comercial de filés de Tilápia do Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus) resfriados. Nos experimentos, foram utilizados 120 filés separados em lotes, de acordo com o tratamento: (T1) embalagem em ar (controle), (T2) embalagem em atmosfera modificada, (T3) embalagem em ar e irradiação, (T4) embalagem em atmosfera modificada e irradiação. Foram realizadas análises físico-químicas (BVT, TMA, pH, amônia e TBARS), bacteriológicas (contagem de bactérias heterotróficas, aeróbias, mesófilas e psicrotróficas) e avaliação sensorial. Os resultados consistentemente indicaram uma redução progressiva da qualidade do produto com o tempo de armazenamento, a qual foi significativamente mais rápida nas amostras controle do que naquelas submetidas aos demais tratamentos, tendo sido observada uma extensão na validade comercial dos filés embalados em atmosfera modificada e/ou irradiados de 4 dias para aproximadamente duas semanas.

This paper investigated the effects of modified atmosphere packing (60% N2 and 40% CO2) and irradiation (with a 1.5kGy dose) either used alone or combined on the shelf life of fillets of refrigerated Nile Tilapia. A total of 120 fillets were used in the experiments in order to test four different treatments and included samples: packed in air (control), packed in modified atmosphere, packed in air and irradiated, and finally, packed in modified atmosphere and irradiated. Regular monitoring of physicochemical parameters (TVB, pH, ammonia and TBARS), bacteriological conditions (heterotrophic aerobic mesophilic and psychrotrophic bacteria) and sensory acceptance were performed. The results consistently indicated an increasing deterioration of the fillets with time, however those treated with irradiation, modified atmosphere or both combined had longer shelf lives (around two weeks) in comparison with the control (4 days only).

This work investigated the effects of different packaging methods (air and vacuum) combined with irradiation (0.0, 2.0 and 3.0 kGy) on the preservation of chicken breast fillets stored at 1ºC for up to 18 days by sensorial test, determination of pH and bacterial growth. The findings indicated that the post-irradiation lag phase increased with the dose, leading to an extension in shelf-life. Vacuum-packed samples irradiated at 3.0 kGy exhibited the longest shelf life. Among the analyzed bacteria, coliforms and Listeria spp. were most sensitive to gamma radiation. All the fillets acquired more attractive coloration and better overall impression with irradiation. The combined use of vacuum packaging and irradiation (3.0 kGy) reduced the microbial populations without causing change in pH and yielded a significant shelf-life extension of refrigerated fillets, besides improving its appearance.

Neste trabalho são apresentados os esforços para garantir a homogeneidade de um material de referência. Níveis residuais (mg.kg-1) de quatro agrotóxicos (γ-HCH, fenitrotiona, clorpirifós e procimidona) foram adicionados à polpa de tomate com o objetivo de se preparar um material de referência certificado. As propriedades mais importantes desses materiais são a homogeneidade e a estabilidade. Antes de serem enviados a outros laboratórios, os materiais de referência precisam ter sua homogeneidade verificada. Nas etapas prévias, amostras foram avaliadas de modo a prover dados sobre o tratamento mais adequado para minimizar a variabilidade analítica do lote preparado e garantir a qualidade da amostra candidata a material de referência certificado, tão bem como a estimativa da incerteza associada à homogeneidade. A análise de variância fornece informações sobre a variabilidade do lote preparado e o grau de invariabilidade da amostra fortificada. Depois da preparação, as amostras foram expostas à radiação gama na dose de 2 kGy e submetidas a um estudo interlaboratorial para certificação. As concentrações certificadas dos agrotóxicos após caracterização foram 0,191 ± 0,047 mg.kg-1; 0,192 ± 0,068 mg.kg-1; 0,225 ± 0,076 mg.kg-1e 0,177 ± 0,051 mg.kg-1 para o γ-HCH, a fenitrotiona, clorpirifós e procimidona respectivamente.

This study reports on the efforts to ensure homogeneity of certified reference materials. Residues of four pesticides (γ-HCH, fenitrothion, chlorpyrifos, and procymidone) were added to tomato pulp in order to produce reference materials. The two most important properties of such materials are known to be homogeneity and stability. Before being shipped to other laboratories, reference materials must have their homogeneity certified. As part of a preliminary study, hundreds of samples were investigated in order to provide data on the most suitable treatments to minimize analytical variability and ensure the quality of samples intended for use as reference materials as well as to yield estimates of the uncertainty associated to the homogeneity data. In addition, the variance analysis provided accurate information on the bulk variability and the degree of non-homogeneity of contaminated samples. After preparation, the samples were exposed to 2 kGy of gamma radiation and submitted to an interlaboratory certification study. The certified concentrations of γ-HCH, fenithrotion, chlorpyrifos, and procymidone were 0.191 ± 0.047 mg.kg-1; 0.192 ± 0.068 mg.kg-1; 0.225 ± 0.076 mg.kg-1 , and 0.177 ± 0.051 mg.kg-1, respectively.

Neste trabalho são apresentados os resultados dos estudos de estabilidade referentes à produção de um material de referência certificado. Foram avaliados níveis residuais de concentração dos agrotóxicos γ-HCH, fenitrotiona, clorpirifós e procimidona em polpa de tomate. A pasteurização e a irradiação gama foram empregadas à polpa de tomate, visando manter a integridade da amostra candidata a material de referência. A polpa foi preparada e dividida em duas partes. Cada parte foi fortificada com os referidos agrotóxicos na faixa de concentração de 0,1 a 0,2 mg.kg-1. Uma das partes foi submetida à pasteurização a 90 °C por 4 minutos e a outra parte foi irradiada com dose de 2,0 kGy depois de homogeneizada. A estabilidade e a incerteza da amostra, correspondente ao período de tempo avaliado, foram determinadas através da análise de regressão em conjunto com a ANOVA. Os resultados indicaram que ambos os procedimentos de preparo da amostra são adequados para a conservação da polpa de tomate fortificada com os quatro agrotóxicos, com vantagem para o tratamento por irradiação com a dose de 2,0 kGy.

This research presents the results of stability studies regarding the production of certified reference materials. The residual concentration levels of four pesticides, namely γ-HCH, fenitrothion, chlorpyrifos, and procymidone were investigated. Pasteurization combined with gamma irradiation was used to maintain the integrity of the mixture tested as a reference material candidate. The pulp was prepared and split into two parts. Each part was then spiked with those pesticides in the concentration range of 0.1 to 0.2 mg.kg-1 in tomato pulp. One of them was submitted to pasteurization at 90 °C for 4 minutes after being homogenized, and the other was irradiated with a gamma dose of 2.0 kGy. The material stability and the corresponding uncertainty during the period of time evaluated were determined using regression analysis and ANOVA. The results indicated that the dose of 2.0 kGy was appropriated for the conservation of tomato pulp spiked with the four aforementioned pesticides.

O objetivo deste experimento foi investigar o efeito da radiação gama sobre a micobiota natural de ingredientes e ração avícola e seu impacto sobre espécies de Aspergillus spp. Para tanto, fubá, farelo de soja e ração foram expostos a uma fonte de césio-137 nas doses 0; 3,5; 8 e 15kGy. Amostras de milho, inoculadas com suspensão de conídios de Aspergillus spp., foram irradiadas com doses de 0 a 8kGy. Observou-se redução das contagens com o aumento da dose, obtendo-se eliminação da micobiota com 8kGy. Uma maior radiossensibilidade de leveduras foi observada em comparação a fungos filamentosos, e aqueles que resistiram à dose de 3,5kGy pertenciam, em sua maioria, aos gêneros Cladosporium spp., Curvularia spp., Fusarium spp. e Aspergillus spp. As espécies A. flavus e A. parasiticus mostraram-se mais radiorresistentes que as demais avaliadas. Redução na conidiogênese e presença de estruturas de resistência foram detectadas logo após a irradiação. Constatou-se também que, após repiques em meios nutritivos, os isolados irradiados recuperaram a taxa de crescimento normal. Verificou-se ainda que o estresse metabólico induzido pela irradiação promoveu aumento na produção de aflatoxina B1 e ocratoxina A.

This experiment investigated the effects of gamma radiation on the mycoflora of natural ingredients and poultry feed, and its impact on species of Aspergillus spp. Corn meal, soybean meal, feed and maize (inoculated with spore suspension of Aspergillus spp.) were irradiated with 0, 3.5, 8 and 15kGy by exposure to a 137Cs source. Increasing radiation doses led to lower counts so elimination of mycoflora was observed at 8kGy. In addition, filamentous fungi exhibited a greater resistance to radiation than yeasts and those that withstood 3.5kGy were mostly Cladosporium spp., Curvularia spp., Fusarium spp. or Aspergillus spp. A. flavus and A. parasiticus have been found to be the most resistant among the species studied. Post-irradiation reduction in the spore production as well as presence of resistance structures have been observed. When such altered colonies were isolated and grown on nutritional media again, they recovered their normal growth pattern. In addition, a significant increase in the production of aflatoxin B1 and ochratoxin A was found, probably due to metabolic stress caused by irradiation.

A beterraba vermelha (variedade hortícola, cultivar Early Wonder) foi cultivada na área experimental do Departamento de Fitotecnia do Instituto de Agronomia da Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro. Após a colheita, as raízes foram minimamente processadas, embaladas e submetidas a diferentes doses de radiação gama (0; 0,5; 1,0; e 1,5 kGy), sendo em seguida armazenadas, por 20 dias, a 8 ºC. Durante o período de armazenamento, aos: 1, 9, 13 e 20 dias, foram realizados testes sensoriais, nos quais 12 avaliadores julgaram a aparência e o aroma segundo uma escala hedônica. Os resultados indicaram que as amostras irradiadas com doses de 1,0 e 1,5 kGy mantiveram-se dentro dos padrões de aceitabilidade por 20 dias. Alem disso, foi também observado que a avaliação do aroma permitiu uma melhor discriminação, dos efeitos das diferentes doses de radiação sobre a aceitação do produto.

Red beet (Early Wonder) was cultivated in an experimental area of the Department of Fitotecnia at the Institute of Agronomy at the Rural Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ). After harvest, the roots were minimally processed; packed; exposed to different doses of gamma radiation (0; 0.5; 1.0 and 1.5 kGy) and stored for 20 days at 8.0 ºC. Sensory evaluations were performed 1; 9; 13 and 20 days after irradiation by 12 testers who rated the overall appearance and aroma on a hedonic scale. The results indicated that the irradiated samples remained within the limit of acceptance for 20 days. In addition, the aroma was found to be a more sensitive indicator of the effect of different doses of radiation to the acceptance of the product.
