ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Universal healthcare is a cornerstone of Brazil’s public health system. However, delayed diagnosis and treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) remain substantial issues. The scarcity of outpatient dialysis facilities contributes to extended hospital stays. This study aimed to examine how the time to dialysis initiation (TID) impacts mortality in patients with renal disease. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between variables affecting TID and mortality in hospitalized patients with renal disease. DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Santa Marcelina Hospital in São Paulo. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary hospital, involving adults with kidney disease who were referred to the emergency department between 2014 and 2017. Primary outcomes included TID and mortality rates. RESULTS: Among the 402 patients studied, the average age was 58.6 years, and 59.4% were men. The median hospital stay was 44.5 d. Notably, 28.1% of the patients began dialysis under emergency conditions. Diabetes and hypertension were the most prevalent causes of renal disease. A positive correlation was found between age and TID (P = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS: Primary care in Brazil often fails to effectively detect and manage CKD, leading to a higher incidence of emergency dialysis, particularly among older adults. This delay correlates with increased mortality rates. Older age is associated with delayed TID, prolonged hospital stays, and consequently higher mortality. These findings highlight the need for better primary care to effectively manage CKD and reduce hospitalization and mortality. A cardiomiopatia hipertrófica (CMH) é uma forma de doença do músculo cardíaco de causa genética, caracterizada pela hipertrofia das paredes ventriculares. O diagnóstico requer detecção por métodos de imagem (Ecocardiograma ou Ressonância Magnética Cardíaca) de qualquer segmento da parede do ventrículo esquerdo com espessura > 15 mm, sem outra causa provável. A análise genética permite identificar mutações de genes codificantes de diferentes estruturas do sarcômero responsáveis pelo desenvolvimento da CMH em cerca de 60% dos casos, permitindo o rastreio de familiares e aconselhamento genético, como parte importante do manejo dos pacientes e familiares. Vários conceitos sobre a CMH foram recentemente revistos, incluindo sua prevalência de 1 em 250 indivíduos, não sendo, portanto, uma doença rara, mas subdiagnosticada. A vasta maioria dos pacientes é assintomática. Naqueles sintomáticos, a obstrução do trato de saída do ventrículo esquerdo (OTSVE) é o principal distúrbio responsável pelos sintomas, devendo-se investigar a sua presença em todos os casos. Naqueles em que o ecocardiograma em repouso ou com Manobra de Valsalva não detecta gradiente intraventricular significativo (> 30 mmHg), devem ser submetidos à ecocardiografia com esforço físico para detecção da OTSVE.   Pacientes com sintomas limitantes e grave OTSVE, refratários ao uso de betabloqueadores e verapamil, devem receber terapias de redução septal ou uso de novas drogas inibidoras da miosina cardíaca. Por fim, os pacientes adequadamente identificados com risco aumentado de morta súbita podem receber medida profilática com implante de cardiodesfibrilador implantável (CDI).

La miocardiopatía hipertrófica (MCH) es una forma de enfermedad cardíaca de origen genético, caracterizada por el engrosamiento de las paredes ventriculares. El diagnóstico requiere la detección mediante métodos de imagen (Ecocardiograma o Resonancia Magnética Cardíaca) que muestren algún segmento de la pared ventricular izquierda con un grosor > 15 mm, sin otra causa probable. El análisis genético permite identificar mutaciones en genes que codifican diferentes estructuras del sarcómero responsables del desarrollo de la MCH en aproximadamente el 60% de los casos, lo que permite el tamizaje de familiares y el asesoramiento genético, como parte importante del manejo de pacientes y familiares. Varios conceptos sobre la MCH han sido revisados recientemente, incluida su prevalencia de 1 entre 250 individuos, por lo tanto, no es una enfermedad rara, sino subdiagnosticada. La gran mayoría de los pacientes son asintomáticos. En los casos sintomáticos, la obstrucción del tracto de salida ventricular izquierdo (TSVI) es el trastorno principal responsable de los síntomas, y su presencia debe investigarse en todos los casos. En aquellos en los que el ecocardiograma en reposo o la maniobra de Valsalva no detecta un gradiente intraventricular significativo (> 30 mmHg), deben someterse a ecocardiografía de esfuerzo para detectar la obstrucción del TSVI. Los pacientes con síntomas limitantes y obstrucción grave del TSVI, refractarios al uso de betabloqueantes y verapamilo, deben recibir terapias de reducción septal o usar nuevos medicamentos inhibidores de la miosina cardíaca. Finalmente, los pacientes adecuadamente identificados con un riesgo aumentado de muerte súbita pueden recibir medidas profilácticas con el implante de un cardioversor-desfibrilador implantable (CDI).

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a form of genetically caused heart muscle disease, characterized by the thickening of the ventricular walls. Diagnosis requires detection through imaging methods (Echocardiogram or Cardiac Magnetic Resonance) showing any segment of the left ventricular wall with a thickness > 15 mm, without any other probable cause. Genetic analysis allows the identification of mutations in genes encoding different structures of the sarcomere responsible for the development of HCM in about 60% of cases, enabling screening of family members and genetic counseling, as an important part of patient and family management. Several concepts about HCM have recently been reviewed, including its prevalence of 1 in 250 individuals, hence not a rare but rather underdiagnosed disease. The vast majority of patients are asymptomatic. In symptomatic cases, obstruction of the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) is the primary disorder responsible for symptoms, and its presence should be investigated in all cases. In those where resting echocardiogram or Valsalva maneuver does not detect significant intraventricular gradient (> 30 mmHg), they should undergo stress echocardiography to detect LVOT obstruction. Patients with limiting symptoms and severe LVOT obstruction, refractory to beta-blockers and verapamil, should receive septal reduction therapies or use new drugs inhibiting cardiac myosin. Finally, appropriately identified patients at increased risk of sudden death may receive prophylactic measure with implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Nutritional status and growth curves can affect cognitive development, increase the risk of infection, and contribute to the development of chronic diseases. Its etiology is related to food, socioeconomic, and maternal conditions. However, to date, no data on these parameters exist in the state of Goiás, Brazil. OBJECTIVE: To compare the nutritional status and growth curves of children and adolescents in the city of Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil. DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a cross-sectional study. A total of 529 individuals were recruited from a primary health center in the municipality. METHODS: To assess nutritional status, the sample was divided into three categories: 3–4, 5–10, and 11–19 years, with z-score classification considering body mass index for age. The classification of growth curves was performed considering the median height values for age, assuming two references: (a) young Brazilian population and (b) one recommended for international use. The independent sample T-test was used to compare anthropometric variables. RESULTS: The results showed that the classification of eutrophics represents a predominant percentage between both sexes (men: 03–04 = 55.4%; 05–10 = 57.6%; 11–19 = 53.5 % and women: 03–04 = 53.5%; 05–10 = 63.9%; 11–19 = 56.9%), and growth curves showed differences in specific periods in both sexes. CONCLUSIONS: It can be concluded that children and adolescents from the city of Goiânia present as predominance the eutrophic nutritional status, followed by the risk of overweight, underweight, obesity, and malnutrition of both sexes. Resumo O estudo objetiva pesquisar o uso da cinza da casca do murumuru (CCM), um resíduo agroindustrial gerado especificamente na região amazônica como substituição parcial do cimento no concreto estrutural e avaliar as características físicas, químicas e mineralógicas da cinza para atuação como filler no concreto, além de suas propriedades no estado fresco e endurecido no concreto. Com esse intuito, o CCM passou pelos ensaios de caracterização físico-mecânicas como o de massa específica, atividade pozolânica com cimento Portland, atividade pozolânica com a cal e ensaio de BET, realizando-se também as análises mineralógicas e químicas da cinza. Os resultados mostraram que existe uma viabilidade técnica com substituição parcial de 6% de CCM no cimento, utilizando-se aditivo plastificante para melhorar a trabalhabilidade, mostrando uma melhora nas propriedades físico-mecânicas e de durabilidade do concreto. Abstract This research paper focuses on the use of murumuru husk ash (MHA), an agro-industrial waste generated specifically in the Amazon region, as partial replacement of cement in structural concrete. It also evaluates the physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the ash to act as filler in concrete and its properties in the fresh and hardened states in concrete. To this end, the MHA performed physical-mechanical characterization tests, such as specific mass, pozzolanic activity with Portland cement, pozzolanic activity with lime, and BET test, also performing the mineralogical and chemical analysis of the ash. The results showed that there is technical feasibility with partial replacement of 6% of MHA in cement using plasticizer additive to improve workability, thus showing an improvement in the physical-mechanical and durability properties of the concrete. RESUMO Objetivo: Comparar os achados oculares em longo prazo de crianças que se submeteram à cirurgia de catarata congênita antes dos dois anos de idade e receberam uma injeção intracameral de triancinolona no intraoperatório ou usaram prednisolona oral no pós-operatório para modular a inflamação ocular. Métodos: Neste estudo prospectivo de coorte, todos os pacientes que participaram de um ensaio clínico anterior, que analisou os resultados cirúrgicos de 1 ano da cirurgia de catarata congênita usando triancinolona intracameral (Grupo de Estudo) ou prednisolona oral (Grupo Controle), eram elegíveis para participar. Os prontuários médicos dos pacientes foram revisados e as crianças foram submetidas a um exame oftalmológico completo no acompanhamento final. As principais medidas de desfecho foram: achados biomicroscópicos, pressão intraocular, espessura central da córnea, a necessidade de intervenções cirúrgicas adicionais e achados compatíveis com glaucoma. Resultados: Vinte e seis olhos (26 pacientes) foram incluídos (Grupo de Estudo = 11 olhos; Grupo de Controle = 15 olhos). O seguimento médio foi de 8,2 ± 1,2 anos e 8,1 ± 1,7 anos nos Grupos de Estudo e Controle, respectivamente (p=0,82). Todos os olhos apresentavam lente intraocular centrada. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os grupos com relação à presença de sinéquia posterior (p=0,56), pressão intraocular (p=0,49) ou espessura central da córnea (p=0,21). Nenhum dos olhos preencheu os critérios diagnósticos para glaucoma, apresentou opacificação secundária do eixo visual ou foi reoperado. Conclusão: Os achados oculares em longo prazo de crianças que se submeteram à cirurgia de catarata congênita e receberam uma injeção intracameral de triancinolona no intraoperatório foram semelhantes aos que usaram prednisolona oral no pós-operatório para modular a inflamação ocular, sugerindo que a triancinolona intracameral pode substituir a prednisolona oral na cirurgia de catarata congênita, facilitando o tratamento pós-operatório e a adesão ao mesmo. ABSTRACT Purpose: To compare the long-term ocular findings of children that were operated of congenital cataract before the age of two and that received an intraoperative intracameral triamcinolone injection or used postoperative oral prednisolone to modulate ocular inflammation. Methods: All patients who had previously participated in a clinical trial that analyzed the 1-year surgical outcomes of congenital cataract surgery utilizing intracameral triamcinolone (study group) or oral prednisolone (control group) were eligible to participate in this prospective cohort research. Patients’ medical records were reviewed, and the children underwent a complete ophthalmologic exam on final follow-up. Biomicroscopic findings, intraocular pressure, central corneal thickness, the need for additional surgical interventions, and findings compatible with glaucoma were the primary end measures. Results: Twenty-six eyes (26 patients) were included (study group = 11 eyes; control group = 15 eyes). The mean follow--up was 8.2 ± 1.2 years and 8.1 ± 1.7 years in the study and control groups, respectively (p=0.82). All eyes presented a centered intraocular lens. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups with regards to the presence of posterior synechia (p=0.56), intraocular pressure (p=0.49), or central corneal thickness (p=0.21). None of the eyes fulfilled the glaucoma diagnostic criteria, presented secondary visual axis obscuration, or were reoperated. Conclusion: The long--term ocular findings of children that underwent congenital cataract surgery and received an intraoperative intracameral triamcinolone injection were similar to those that used postoperative oral prednisolone to modulate ocular inflammation. This suggests that intracameral triamcinolone may substitute oral prednisolone in congenital cataract surgery, facilitating the postoperative treatment regimen and compliance. RESUMO Objetivo: Descrever o desenvolvimento, a implementação e o uso de painéis para a análise epidemiológica de dados abertos durante a pandemia de COVID-19. Métodos: Os painéis foram criados para analisar dados públicos relacionados á COVID-19 de várias fontes, incluindo dados oficiais dos governos e de redes sociais, a nível global. Técnicas de processamento e limpeza foram utilizadas para aglutinar os bancos de dados. Calculamos o coeficiente de correlação de Spearman entre as curvas de sintomas gripais da pesquisa da Universidade de Maryland em conjunto com o Facebook, chamada COVID Trends and Impacts Survey (CTIS), e a curva de casos notificados pelo Ministério da Saúde no Brasil. Resultados: Os painéis obtiveram sucesso em antecipar a chegada de novas ondas de COVID-19 no Brasil. A análise do dado revelou a correlação entre a pesquisa CTIS e o número oficial de casos no país. O artigo destaca o potencial de painéis interativos como uma ferramenta de tomada de decisão no contexto de emergências de saúde pública, como, por exemplo, no uso destes para a comunicação oficial do governo do Rio Grande do Sul. Conclusão: O uso de painéis para prever o avanço da COVID-19 no Brasil foi uma ferramenta útil para a tomada de decisão. A antecipação de ondas da doença possibilita tempo oportuno para que essas decisões sejam potencialmente mais assertivas. Isso esboça a necessidade de mais ações interdisciplinares dessa natureza, com ferramentas de visualização nas pesquisas epidemiológicas.

ABSTRACT Objective: Describe the development, implementation, and utilization of dashboards for epidemiological analysis through open data research during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The dashboards were designed to analyze COVID-19 related public data from various sources, including official government data and social media, at world level. Data processing and cleaning techniques were used to join datasets. We calculated Spearman correlation coefficient between the COVID-like symptoms data of the University of Maryland and Facebook Health research, called COVID Trends and Impacts Survey (CTIS) and the official data of notified COVID-19 cases by the Brazilian Health Ministry. Results: The dashboards were successful in predicting the onset of new waves of COVID-19 in Brazil. The data analysis revealed a correlation between the CTIS and the official number of cases the country. This article shows the potential of interactive dashboards as a decision-making tool in the context of public health emergencies, as it was used by the official communication of the Rio Grande do Sul state government. Conclusion: The use of dashboards for predicting the spread of COVID-19 in Brazil was a useful tool for decision-making. To anticipate waves of the disease gives time so that these decisions can be potentially more assertive. This drafts the need of more interdisciplinary actions of this nature, with visualization tools on epidemiologic research.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) has increased in the recent decades, along with the number of patients in the terminal stages of this disease, requiring transplantation. Some skin disorders are more frequent in patients with CKD and in renal transplant recipients (RTR). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the frequency of skin diseases in RTR and patients with CKD receiving conservative treatment. DESIGN AND SETTING: This observational cross-sectional study recruited consecutive patients with CKD and RTR from a nephrology clinic at a teaching hospital in Brazil between 2015 and 2020. METHODS: Quantitative, descriptive, and analytical approaches were used. The sample was selected based on convenience sampling. Data were collected from dermatological visits and participants’ medical records. RESULTS: Overall, 308 participants were included: 206 RTR (66.9%, median age: 48 years, interquartile range [IQR] 38.0–56.0, 63.6% men) and 102 patients with CKD (33.1%, median age: 61.0 years, IQR 50.0–71.2, 48% men). The frequency of infectious skin diseases (39.3% vs. 21.6% P = 0.002) were higher in RTR than in patients with CKD. Neoplastic skin lesions were present in nine (4.4%) RTR and in only one (1.0%) patient with CKD. Among the RTR, the ratio of basal cell carcinoma to squamous cell carcinoma was 2:1. CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed that an increased frequency of infectious skin diseases may be expected in patients who have undergone kidney transplantation. Resumo Este estudo foi conduzido para analisar o impacto da época de colheita (C) de maçãs‘Fuji Suprema’ sobre sua qualidade, produtividade e rentabilidade econômica nacolheita e após a armazenagem. Os frutos foram colhidos no início do período decolheita comercial(H1), após 10 dias (C2) e após 22 dias (C3) da primeira colheita, em 2008 e2009. Em cada ano e data de colheita, foram colhidas seis amostras de ~400 kg (~2.900maçãs), as quais foram analisadas na colheita (6 subamostras de 100 maçãs) e após 250 dias de armazenagem a 0,8 oC, sob atmosfera controlada. A análise econômica considerou custos fixos e variáveis de produção no pomar e das práticas pós-colheita e a produtividadede maçãs empacotadas. As maçãs colhidas precocemente apresentaram, na colheita e após aarmazenagem, maior firmeza da polpa, maior acidez e menor teor de açúcares que as colhidas tardiamente. O atraso da colheita em 22 dias aumentou a produção em 10,2% pelo aumento do tamanho dos frutos, mas reduziu a produção em 3,6% por queimadura de solsevera e podridões pré-colheita. Adicionalmente, a colheita tardia resultou em aumentodas perdas de produção por podridões em 4,4% e 10,9% durante armazenagem e prateleira,respectivamente,e reduziu as perdas de produção por escaldadura superficial em 17,1 a 22,7%. Abstract This study aimed to analyze the effect of harvest date on ‘Fuji Suprema’ apple quality, productivity, and economic profitability at harvest and after storage. Apples were harvested at the beginning of the commercial harvest window (H1), ten days after H1 (H2), and 22 days after H1 (H3) in the 2008 and 2009 growing seasons. A total of six samples with ~400 kg of fruit (~2,900 apples) each were picked at each growing season and harvest date, which were assessed at harvest (six subsamples of 100 fruit) and after 250 days of controlled atmosphere storage at 0.8 °C. The economic analysis considered fixed and variable production costs in the orchard and postharvest practices and the productivity of packaged apples (pack-out). Early harvested (H1) apples had greater flesh firmness, acidity, and lower soluble solids content than late-harvested apples (H3), both at harvest and after storage. Delaying harvest by 22 days increased the production by 10.2% due to increased fruit size but reduced the production by 3.6% due to severe sunburn and pre-harvest decay incidence. Late harvest also increased production losses due to decay by 4.4% and 10.9% during storage and shelf, respectively, but reduced production losses due to superficial scald by 17.1 to 22.7%. The net revenue (R$ ha-1) is higher for apples harvested late (H3, flesh firmness of 15.6 lb and starch index of 7.1) than for apples harvested early (H1 and H2) when the fruit is marketed soon after harvest (between April and May). However, for apples marketed after long-term storage, economic profitability is maximum when harvested at an intermediate maturity stage (H2, flesh firmness of 16.4 lb and starch index of 6). RESUMO Nos últimos anos a preocupação de ambientalistas vem crescendo devido ao grande uso de produtos que tem como matéria-prima fontes fósseis não renováveis. Uma alternativa adotada entre os pesquisadores é a produção de compósitos de matriz termoplástica com fibras de resíduos de lignocelulósicas. A oiticica ou oiti é um fruto rico em óleo e é muito utilizado para a produção de sabão. O co-produto gerado desse processo é rico em fibras, óleo e impurezas e atualmente é muito utilizado para ração animal e adubo para solo. O objetivo do presente trabalho é a produção e avaliação das propriedades de compósitos de PEAD com Torta de Oiticica. Como matriz foi utilizado um PEAD verde fornecido pela Braskem e a fase dispersa foi a Torta de oiticica fornecida por uma fábrica de sabão. As composições com 5, 10 e 20% de Torta de oiticica foram processadas por extrusão dupla rosca e os corpos de provas confeccionados pelo processo de injeção. Os compósitos foram caracterizados através do ensaio de tração uniaxial para avaliação de propriedades mecânicas (deformação até a ruptura, módulo e tensão na força máxima). A interação entre torta e matriz foi analisada através da superfície de fratura utilizando microscopia eletrônica de varredura e a análise térmica foi avaliada através de DSC. Os resultados mostraram diminuição na deformação para composições com 10 e 20% de torta. Houve uma queda gradativa na tensão na força máxima nos compósitos quando comparada com a do PEAD. As micrografias mostraram pouca interação entre fibra e matriz e a presença de vazios. ABSTRACT In recent years the concern of environmentalists has been growing due to the large use of products that have non-renewable fossil sources as raw material. An alternative adopted by the researchers is the production of thermoplastic matrix composites with lignocellulosic waste fibers. The oticica or oiti is a fruit rich in oil and is widely used for soap production. The co-product generated from this process is rich in fiber, oil and impurities and is currently widely used for animal feed and soil fertilizer. The objective of the present work is the production and evaluation of the properties of HDPE composites with Oiticica waste. As matrix was used a green HDPE supplied by Braskem and the dispersed phase was the pie de oiticica supplied by a soap factory. Compositions with 5, 10 and 20% of waste de oiticica were processed by double screw extrusion and the specimens made by the injection process. The composites were characterized by uniaxial tensile test to evaluate mechanical properties (deformation to rupture, modulus, and stress at maximum force). The interaction between pie and matrix was analyzed through the fracture surface using scanning electron microscopy and the analysis. Thermal analysis was assessed by DSC. The results showed decrease in the deformation for 10 and 20% waste compositions. There was a gradual decrease at the stress at the maximum strength of the composites when compared to HDPE. The micrographs showed little interaction between fiber and matrix and the presence of voids. Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da adição dietética de anacardato de cálcio como fonte de ácido anacárdico sobre o desempenho reprodutivo e os parâmetros antioxidantes sanguíneos de coelhas Nova Zelândia Branco. Vinte e sete fêmeas da raça Nova Zelândia Branco foram distribuídas em delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com três tratamentos e nove repetições, tendo-se considerado um animal como unidade experimental. Os tratamentos consistiram em rações peletizadas, com diferentes níveis de inclusão de anacardato de cálcio (0, 0,5 e 1,0%). A inclusão de anacardato de cálcio nas dietas aumentou a concentração de compostos fenólicos e a capacidade antioxidante no sangue das coelhas fêmeas lactantes. Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the dietary addition of calcium anacardate as a source of phenolic compounds on the reproductive performance and blood antioxidant parameters of New Zealand White female rabbits. Twenty-seven New Zealand White female rabbits were distributed in a randomized complete block design with three treatments and nine replicates, considering one animal as the experimental unit. The treatments consisted of pelleted diets with different inclusion levels of calcium anacardate (0, 0.5, and 1.0%). The inclusion of calcium anacardate in the diets increased the concentration of phenolic compounds and the antioxidant capacity in the blood of lactating female rabbits. Calcium anacardate at the level of 1.0% improves the feed conversion ratio during gestation and increases the phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity in the blood serum of female rabbits at 21 days of lactation. Abstract Introduction: Methylene Blue (MB) has been shown to attenuate oxidative, inflammatory, myocardial, and neurological lesions during ischemia-reperfusion and has great potential during cardiac arrest. This study aimed to determine the effects of MB combined with epinephrine during cardiac arrest on myocardial and cerebral lesions. Method: Thirty-eight male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to four groups: the sham group (SH, n = 5), and three groups subjected to cardiac arrest (n = 11 /group) and treated with EPI 20 μg.kg−1 (EPI), EPI 20 μg.kg−1 + MB 2 mg.kg−1 (EPI + MB), or saline 0.9% 0.2 ml (CTL). Ventricular fibrillation was induced by direct electrical stimulation in the right ventricle for 3 minutes, and anoxia was maintained for 5 minutes. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) consisted of medications, ventilation, chest compressions, and defibrillation. After returning to spontaneous circulation, animals were observed for four hours. Blood gas, troponin, oxidative stress, histology, and TUNEL staining measurements were analyzed. Groups were compared using generalized estimating equations. Results: No differences in the Returning of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC) rate were observed among the groups (EPI: 63%, EPI + MB: 45%, CTL: 40%, p = 0.672). The mean arterial pressure immediately after ROSC was higher in the EPI+MB group than in the CTRL group (CTL: 30.5 [5.8], EPI: 63 [25.5], EPI+MB: 123 [31] mmHg, p = 0.007). Serum troponin levels were high in the CTL group (CTL: 130.1 [333.8], EPI: 3.70 [36.0], EPI +MB: 43.7 [116.31] ng/mL, p < 0.05). Resumo Formigas cortadeiras estão entre as pragas agrícola e florestal mais importante da região Neotropical, uma vez que utilizam material vegetal como substrato para crescimento de seu fungo mutualista Leucoagaricus gongylophorus. Inseticidas e fungicidas de origem vegetal têm mostrado potencial para o controle dessas formigas. O presente estudo avaliou a atividade de extratos hidroalcóolicos de frondes de quatro espécies de samambaias (períodos seco e chuvoso) sobre o fungo mutualista de formigas cortadeiras. Suspensões do micélio fúngico foram semeadas na superfície dos tubos contendo extratos das samambaias na concentração de 5 mg/mL e 100 μg/mL. O perfil químico dos extratos foi analisado por cromatografia em camada delgada (CCD). Extratos (período seco) na concentração de 5 mg/mL inibiram o crescimento do fungo: Macrothelypteris torresiana e Dicksonia sellowiana (menos de 20%) Niphidium crassifolium (aproximadamente 40%), Parapolystichum effusum (100%). Os extratos (períodos seco e chuvoso) na concentração 100 μg/mL não promoveram inibição. A análise do perfil químico dos extratos das quatro espécies indicou a presença de beta-sitosterol, friedelinol, rutina e canferol. Os extratos brutos de P. effusum e N. crassifolium foram os mais promissores para futuras formulações de produtos antifúngicos. Assim sendo, as samambaias são plantas potenciais na busca de substâncias com menor impacto ambiental para uma agricultural sustentável. Abstract Leafcutter ants are among the most important agricultural and forest pests in the Neotropical region, given that they use plant matter as substrate for the growth of their mutualist fungus Leucoagaricus gongylophorus. Plant-based insecticides and fungicides have shown potential for controlling these ants. The present study assessed the hydroalcoholic extract activity of four fern fronds (dry and rainy periods) on the mutualist fungus of leafcutter ants. Fungal mycelium suspensions were seeded on the surface of tubes containing fern extracts at a concentration of 5 mg/mL and 100 μg/mL. The chemical profile of the extracts was analyzed by thin layer chromatography (TLC). Extracts (dry period) at a concentration of 5 mg/mL inhibited the growth of the fungus: Macrothelypteris torresiana and Dicksonia sellowiana (less than 20%), Niphidium crassifolium (approximately 40%), Parapolystichum effusum extract (100%). None of the extracts (dry and rainy periods) inhibited fungal growth at a concentration of 100 μg/mL. The chemical profile analysis of the extracts indicated the presence of beta-sitosterol, friedelinol, rutin, and kaempferol. The crude extracts of P. effusum and N. crassifolium were the most promising in future formulations of antifungal products. RESUMO Jornais escolares, que sobreviveram as cruezas do tempo e do abandono, preservados em bibliotecas escolares ou em outros acervos, nos chegam como testemunhos de presentes passados, são memórias arquivadas. Neste artigo analisar-se-ão vestígios de culturas de escola e de memórias a partir do jornal escolar O Girafinha, publicado entre 1975 e 1988, por estudantes e docentes da Escola Nossa Senhora da Salete, localizada em Maravilha, SC. Este artigo divide-se em duas partes. Na primeira será tratada a materialidade do jornal e, na segunda, de que forma valores, costumes e interesses foram apropriados e circulavam em suas páginas, configurando práticas e memórias. Acredita-se que suas páginas podem dar a ler e a ver indícios de entrecruzamentos entre culturas, história e memórias. Résumé Les journaux scolaires, qui ont survécu aux aléas du temps et à l’abandon, gardés dans des bibliothèques scolaires ou dans d’autres services, nous parviennent comme des témoignages de présents passés ; ce sont des mémoires archivées. Dans cet article, nous chercherons à analyser les vestiges des cultures de l’école et des mémoires à partir du journal scolaire O Girafinha, publié entre 1975 et 1988 par des étudiants et enseignants de l’école Nossa Senhora de Salete à Maravilha, SC. Cet article est divisé en deux parties. Nous aborderons, en premier lieu, la matérialité du journal et, ensuite, de quelle manière les valeurs, les coutumes et les intérêts ont été appropriés, circulant au fil dans les pages et configurant des pratiques et des mémoires. Dans ce sens, le journal nous semble capable de fournir des indices concernant les pratiques en tant que culture et les cultures en tant que pratiques. Ses pages peuvent donner à lire et à voir des indices d’entrecroisements entre cultures, histoire et mémoires. Abstract School newspapers, which survived the crudities of time and abandonment, preserved in school libraries or other collections, come to us as testimonies of past gifts, they are archived memories. This article will analyze traces of school cultures and memories from the school newspaper O Girafinha, published between 1975 and 1988, by students and teachers of the school Nossa Senhora da Salete, located in Maravilha, SC. This article is divided into two parts. The first will deal with the materiality of the newspaper and, the second part will approach how values, customs and interests were appropriated and circulated in its pages, configuring practices and memories. It is believed that the newspaper is able to provide clues of intersections between cultures, history and memories. Abstract Background: In this experimental protocol, we evaluated the immediate and delayed repair of the buccal branch of the facial nerve (BBFN) with heterologous fibrin biopolymer (HFB) as a coaptation medium and the use of photobiomodulation (PBM), performing functional and histomorphometric analysis of the BBFN and perioral muscles. Methods: Twenty-eight rats were divided into eight groups using the BBFN bilaterally (the left nerve was used for PBM), namely: G1 - control group, right BBFN (without injury); G2 - control group, left BBFN (without injury + PBM); G3 - Denervated right BBFN (neurotmesis); G4 - Denervated left BBFN (neurotmesis + PBM); G5 - Immediate repair of right BBFN (neurotmesis + HFB); G6 - Immediate repair of left BBFN (neurotmesis + HFB + PBM); G7 - Delayed repair of right BBFN (neurotmesis + HFB); G8 - Delayed repair of left BBFN (neurotmesis + HFB + PBM). Delayed repair occurred after two weeks of denervation. All animals were sacrificed after six weeks postoperatively. Results: In the parameters of the BBFN, we observed inferior results in the groups with delayed repair, in relation to the groups with immediate repair, with a significant difference (p < 0.05) in the diameter of the nerve fiber, the axon, and the thickness of the myelin sheath of the group with immediate repair with PBM compared to the other experimental groups. In measuring the muscle fiber area, groups G7 (826.4 ± 69.90) and G8 (836.7 ± 96.44) were similar to G5 (882.8 ± 70.51). In the functional analysis, the G7 (4.10 ± 0.07) and G8 (4.12 ± 0.08) groups presented normal parameters. Conclusion: We demonstrated that delayed repair of BBFN is possible with HFB, but with worse results compared to immediate repair, and that PBM has a positive influence on nerve regeneration results in immediate repair.
