ABSTRACT Associative memories are biologically inspired models designed for the storage and recall by association. Such models aim to store a finite set of associations, called the fundamental memory set. The generalized exponential bidirectional fuzzy associative memory (GEB-FAM) is a heteroassociative memory model designed for the storage and recall of fuzzy sets. A similarity measure, that is, a function that indicates how much two fuzzy sets are equal, is at the core of a GEB-FAM model. In this paper, we present a detailed study on the use of cardinality-based similarity measures in the definition of a GEB-FAM. Moreover, we evaluate the performance of the GEB-FAMs defined using such measures in a face recognition problem.

Abstract Human activities have changed and shaped landscape conditions of the Yucatán Peninsula for more than 4000 years. Several paleoecological studies showed the oldest pollen record of corn-based agriculture is from northern Belize, with an estimated age of 3300 BC. Several other studies report maize between 1500 and 3000 BC from northern Guatemala and the Mexican part of the Yucatán Peninsula. After 3500 cal yr BP several paleoecological studies showed a marked tendency to drier climatic conditions. In pollen records, increased drought is expressed as a reduced presence of fossil arboreal pollen. Pollen records with the presence of Zea mays also show other taxa, which are indicators of disturbance in different vegetation types.

Enzyme extracts obtained from I. fuscus ventral muscle were studied. Peak activity was observed at pH 2, 6, and 8, and 50-60°C, whereas maximum enzymatic stability occurred at pH 2 to 6 (except pH 3) and 0 to 40°C. More than 74% residual activity was retained after heating at 70°C and 80°C for 1 h, confirming the presence of heat-resistant enzymes. The extracts also retained 59% initial activity after 21-day storage at 4-5°C. Hg2+ increased the proteolytic activity in 16%, whereas Cu2+ and Mn2+ caused partial inhibition, suggesting the presence of cysteine- and metallo- proteases. Extracts were inhibited by pepstatin A, β-mercaptoethanol and EDTA, confirming the predominance of aspartyl-, cystein-, and metallo-, proteases. Four proteins were identified by SDS-PAGE (180.6, 114.5, 91.7 and 52.9 kDa). Zymograms on casein confirmed the presence of proteolytic enzymes. After purification by anion exchange chromatography a 49 kDa protease, possible metalloprotease, was detected. Mass spectrometry of the partially purified protein showed homology with trypsin and chain E, leech-derived tryptase inhibitor trypsin complex (LDTI). Due that no homology was found with any previously described metalloproteases, the presence of a novel enzyme is suggested.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The striatum, the largest component of the basal ganglia, is usually subdivided into associative, motor and limbic components. However, the electrophysiological interactions between these three subsystems during behavior remain largely unknown. We hypothesized that the striatum might be particularly active during exploratory behavior, which is presumably associated with increased attention. We investigated the modulation of local field potentials (LFPs) in the striatum during attentive wakefulness in freely moving rats. To this end, we implanted microelectrodes into different parts of the striatum of Wistar rats, as well as into the motor, associative and limbic cortices. We then used electromyograms to identify motor activity and analyzed the instantaneous frequency, power spectra and partial directed coherence during exploratory behavior. We observed fine modulation in the theta frequency range of striatal LFPs in 92.5 ± 2.5% of all epochs of exploratory behavior. Concomitantly, the theta power spectrum increased in all striatal channels (P < 0.001), and coherence analysis revealed strong connectivity (coefficients >0.7) between the primary motor cortex and the rostral part of the caudatoputamen nucleus, as well as among all striatal channels (P < 0.001). Conclusively, we observed a pattern of strong theta band activation in the entire striatum during attentive wakefulness, as well as a strong coherence between the motor cortex and the entire striatum. We suggest that this activation reflects the integration of motor, cognitive and limbic systems during attentive wakefulness.

Genetic (DNA) inactivation of fish sperm with ultraviolet irradiation is generally accompanied by a paradoxical effect on survival rates (Hertwig effect). In the present study, sperm samples from ten male bullseye puffer fish (Sphoeroides annulatus) were diluted 1:50 using Cortland's extender solution and used to test the effect of nine ultraviolet doses (0.2-1.0 Jcm-2) on motility time in seconds, motility index, and embryo survival rate after fertilizing eggs from five bullseye puffer females. Motility time of sperm irradiated with 0.2-0.9 J cm-2 were not statistically different from the controls, but sperm irradiated with a dosage of 1.0 Jcm-2 dosage had significant lower motility time. Motility indices (MI) allowed for the statistical differentiation offour groups in relation to their response to different radiation doses: the first had high MI, and included the controls and 0.20.3 Jcm-2 treatments; the second had lower MI and included the 0.4-0.7 Jcm-2 treatments; the third showed recovery of MI and included the 0.8-0.9 Jcm-2 treatments; and the fourth showed the lowest MI with the 1.0 Jcm-2 treatment. Embryo survival was highest for the controls and 0.2 Jcm-2 treatment, decreasing in the 0.3-0.4 Jcm-2 treatments, increasing again in the 0.50.8 Jcm-2 treatments, until reaching lowest survival in the 0.9-1.0 Jcm-2 treatments. These results indicate that the best ultraviolet dosage to achieve genetic inactivation of sperm of this species is close to 0.7 Jcm-2, a dosage in which fish fry showed typical haploid syndrome characteristics.

Administration of pilocarpine causes epilepsy in rats if status epilepticus (SE) is induced at an early age. To determine in detail the electrophysiological patterns of the epileptogenic activity in these animals, 46 Wistar rats, 7-17 days old, were subjected to SE induced by pilocarpine and electro-oscillograms from the cortex, hippocampus, amygdala, thalamus and hypothalamus, as well as head, rostrum and vibrissa, eye, ear and forelimb movements, were recorded 120 days later. Six control animals of the same age range did not show any signs of epilepsy. In all the rats subjected to SE, iterative spike-wave complexes (8.1 ± 0.5 Hz in frequency, 18.9 ± 9.1 s in duration) were recorded from the frontal cortex during absence fits. However, similar spike-wave discharges were always found also in the hippocampus and, less frequently, in the amygdala and in thalamic nuclei. Repetitive or single spikes were also detected in these same central structures. Clonic movements and single jerks were recorded from all the rats, either concomitantly with or independently of the spike-wave complexes and spikes. We conclude that rats made epileptic with pilocarpine develop absence seizures also occurring during paradoxical sleep, showing the characteristic spike-wave bursts in neocortical areas and also in the hippocampus. This is in contrast to the well-accepted statement that one of the main characteristics of absence-like fits in the rat is that spike-wave discharges are never recorded from the hippocampal fields.

The damage of stinkbugs and defoliators in soybean genotypes was evaluated, under field conditions, at Tarumã and Ribeirão Preto, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Three experiments, one for each of three maturity group, were carried out, in the 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons. In Tarumã, infestations of Diabrotica speciosa (Germar) and Cerotoma sp. occurred in both seasons and Anticarsia gemmatalis Hubn. in the second; in Ribeirão Preto, this caterpillar occurred only in the second year. Only in the first year in Tarumã, stinkbug infestations [predominantly Piezodorus guildinii (West.)], fluctuated above the economic injury level (EIL); in Ribeirão Preto, the stinkbug infestations did not exceed the EIL. Defoliaton damage was estimated by the percentage of eaten leaf area (PAFC). Percentage of foliar retention (PRF) and yield were used to evaluate the stinkbug damage. Considering both years and both locations, among the early maturing genotypes (110 days), 'IAC-22' showed susceptibility to defoliators while 'IAC-17' confirmed its resistance to this group of pests as well as to stinkbugs. Among the genotypes of 120-day maturity group, IAC 93-3379 could be distinguished for the high yield, showing stability by this criteria. IAC 93-3275 and IAC 93-3237 presented low yield and high PAFC and PRF, mainly in Tarumã. Regarding the genotypes of 135-day maturity group, susceptibility to stinkbugs was observed in 'IAC Holambra-Stwart', 'IAC PL-1' and IAC 87-2048; however, this line showed high yield under low infestation. Also, IAC 78-2318, IAC 93-1789 and IAC 93-1796 presented the lowest PRF, indicating to be less susceptible to this disorder.
