Aim This study aimed to assess the polymerization effectiveness of bulk-fill composite resins in longitudinal microhardness. Methods Blocks of bulk-fill composite resin with thicknesses of 6 mm were analyzed with Vickers microhardness. The resin blocks were divided into two groups (n=6): resin AURA and OPUS. The microhardness test was performed before (base and top) and after (longitudinal microhardness) sectioning the blocks at distances of 2 mm, 4 mm, and 6 mm from the top of the block. The mean microhardness values were tabulated and subjected to ANOVA followed by Tukey’s test (p<0.05). Results The OPUS bulk-fill resin samples presented microhardness means of 55.9 kgf/mm2, 53.7 kgf/mm2, and 49.3 kgf/mm2, the AURA bulk-fill resin samples presented microhardness means of 57,02 kgf/mm2, 55,86 kgf/mm2 e 51,77 kgf/mm2 for the distances of 2 mm, 4 mm, and 6 mm, respectively. Tukey’s statistical test showed a significant difference in microhardness values at different distances of 2 mm, 4 mm, and 6 mm (p<0.001) for each resin. Although there was a statistically significant difference within and between the groups assessed, all samples showed polymerization effectiveness when comparing the top and base of the block. Conclusion Polymerization was effective in different thicknesses (2 mm, 4 mm, and 6 mm) in both resins studied. Resumo Introdução O protocolo de reabilitação com implantes dentários é uma opção de tratamento bem estabelecida para pacientes desdentados com alta taxa de sucesso. No entanto, existem fatores que podem levar à dificuldade de continuidade e até mesmo à perda completa da reabilitação. Microgaps são espaços encontrados entre o implante e o pilar protético que são causados pelo limite de precisão na fabricação do implante. Esse espaço pode causar micromovimentos e microinfiltração bacteriana que podem comprometer a vida útil do implante a longo prazo. Objetivo Medir e avaliar microgaps em implantes angulados e retos usando microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Para a realização do estudo, foram utilizados um total de 30 implantes osseointegrados SIN®, sendo 15 retos e 15 angulados. Abstract Introduction The dental implant rehabilitation protocol is a well-established treatment option for edentulous patients with a high success rate. However, there are factors that can lead to difficulty in continuation and even complete loss of rehabilitation. Microgaps are spaces found between the implant and prosthetic abutment that are caused by the limit of precision in the manufacturing of the implant. This space can cause micromovements and bacterial microleakage that can compromise the long-term useful life of the implant. Objective Measure and evaluate microgaps in angled and straight implants using scanning electron microscopy. To carry out the study, a total of 30 SIN® osseointegrated implants were used, 15 of which were straight and 15 angled. Material and method For the comparative analysis of these components, scanning electron microscopy was used, carried out by a properly calibrated and experienced researcher. Objetivo Analisar as alterações de rugosidade na superfície dos implantes osseointegrados tratadas por duplo ataque ácido com uso único e até quatro reutilizações dos ácidos. Material e método As amostras de implantes dentários de liga de titânio (SINGULAR Implants ®) (n = 10) foram subdividas em cinco grupos: controle, tratamento 1, 2, 3 e 4, conforme as reutilizações dos ácidos. As capturas dos implantes no aumento de 500x, 1000x, 2000x e 4000x foram realizadas no microscópio eletrônico de varredura, para posterior análise de rugosidade pelo software ImageJ. Os valores de Ra e Rq foram analisados estatisticamente pelo teste ANOVA e o pós-teste de Tukey. Resultado Os dados obtidos pelas imagens capturadas e pelos números de Ra e Rq adquiridos pelo ImageJ demonstraram que o tratamento com o duplo ataque ácido com cinco utilizações dos mesmos ácidos foi positivo para o tratamento de superfície do implante de liga de titânio. Abstract Introduction The importance of roughness for osseointegration is due to the configuration of proteins with the surface of the implant, and adsorption. Different methods are used in surface treatments, in which parts of the surface layer are removed, such as acid attack. Objective To analyze changes in roughness on the surface of osseointegrated implants treated by double acid etching with single-use and up to 4 reuses of serums at a magnification of 500x, 1000x, 2000x, and 4000x in the scanning microscope (SEM). Method Samples of adherent implants (SINGULAR Implants ®) of lever alloy (n=10) were subdivided into 5 groups: control, treatment 1, 2, 3, and 4, according to the reuses. For the surface topography of the samples, SEM was used, followed by analysis by ImageJ software. Using the ANOVA test and Turkeys post-test, Ra and Rq values were statistically analyzed. Abstract The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate published papers regarding the micronucleus assay in oral mucosal cells of patients undergoing orthodontic therapy (OT). A search of the scientific literature was made in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases for all data published until November, 2021 using the combination of the following keywords: “fixed orthodontic therapy,” “genetic damage”, “DNA damage,” “genotoxicity”, “mutagenicity”, “buccal cells”, “oral mucosa cells,” and “micronucleus assay”. The systematic review was designed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Nine studies were retrieved. Some authors demonstrated that OT induces cytogenetic damage in oral mucosal cells. Out of the nine studies included, two were classified as strong, five as moderate, and two as weak, according to the quality assessment components of the Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP). Meta-analysis data revealed no relationship between mutagenicity in oral cells and OT in different months of treatment. At one month, the SMD = 0.65 and p = 0.08; after three months of OT, the SMD = 1.21 and p = 0.07; and after six months of OT, the SMD = 0.56 and p = 0.11. In the analyzed months of OT, I2 values were >75%, indicating high heterogeneity. In summary, this review was not able to demonstrate that OT induces genetic damage in oral cells. The study is important for the protection of patients undergoing fixed OT, given that mutagenesis participates in the multi-step process of carcinogenesis. OT. . RESUMO Contexto: Os modelos digitais de estudo têm se tornado uma alternativa segura e vantajosa para o diagnóstico e planejamento em odontologia. Apesar das características superiores em comparação aos modelos tradicionais de gesso, os profissionais parecem resistir ao uso de novas tecnologias. Objetivos: Avaliar o nível de conhecimento e a utilização de modelos digitais por meio de questionário aplicado a profissionais da área odontológica. Material e Métodos: Questionário com 12 questões de múltipla escolha sobre modelos de gesso, digitais e uso do software 3Shape - 3D viewer foi respondido por 76 ortodontistas (42 mulheres e 34 homens; idade média = 37,82 anos (DP = ± 7,60) ) e 30 cirurgiões-dentistas gerais (18 mulheres e 12 homens; média de idade de 33,93 anos (DP = ± 8,45)) em Aracaju, Sergipe, Brasil. Os dados foram tabulados em planilhas do Excel e posteriormente analisados no software estatístico SPSS versão 20. Foi realizada uma análise absoluta de frequência e percentual de respostas. ABSTRACT Context: Digital study models have become a safe and advantageous alternative for diagnosis and planning in dentistry. Despite the superior characteristics in comparison with traditional plaster models, professionals seem to resist the use of new technologies. Aims: To assess the level of knowledge and the use of digital models through a questionnaire applied to dental professionals. Methods: A questionnaire with 12 multiple-choice questions about plaster models, digital, and use of the 3Shape - 3D viewer software was answered by 76 orthodontists (42 women and 34 men; mean age =37.82 years (SD ± 7.60)) and 30 general dental surgeons (18 women and 12 men; mean age of 33.93 years (SD ± 8.45)) in Aracaju, Sergipe, Brazil. Data were tabulated in Excel spreadsheets and then analyzed using the SPSS statistical software version 20. An absolute analysis of frequency and percentage of responses was performed. Results: Most professionals reported using plaster models and claimed their low cost as justification for their use (P = 0.001). Aware of the benefits of digital models, professionals of both classes highlighted the facilitated storage and search for information as the main advantages, the cost and infrastructure as the main disadvantages. Aim This study aimed to investigate whether non-ionizing radiation emitted by smartphones is likely to cause genotoxic effects on oral epithelial cells. Methods Thirty adults were distributed into two groups according to the mobile phone brand used, namely Samsung (Samsung, Seoul, South Korea) and Apple (Apple, California, USA). The material was collected with gentle swabbing of the right and left buccal mucosa using a cervical brush, then the micronucleus test was performed. Results The Mann-Whitney test with a 5% significance level did not reveal statistically significant differences in micronuclei frequency between the exposed and non-exposed sides (p=0.251). The different brands do not seem to cause risks of inducing genetic damage because there were no statistically significant differences between them (p=0.47). Conclusion Therefore, our results suggest no correlations of micronuclei frequency in the exposed buccal cells of mobile phone users at the exposure standard levels observed.

Resumo Introdução A interface implante-pilar protético e a formação dos seus microgaps são aspectos relevantes na transferência das cargas e na resposta biológica, estando ligadas ao sucesso da reabilitação. Objetivo Avaliar microgaps na interface entre a conexão interna do implante do tipo Cone Morse e a superfície do componente protético por meio da microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Material e método Foram utilizados 20 implantes dentários de tamanho 3,75 × 11,0mm do tipo Cone Morse com seus respectivos pilares protéticos da Singular® (Singular Implants, RN, Brasil). Os munhões retos foram acoplados aos implantes com torque de 32N/cm2 e o conjunto resultante foi emergido em base de Resina Epóxi ES260, para permitir secção longitudinal da amostra. As amostras foram analisadas e os microgaps mensurados no MEV (JEOL JCM-5700, MA, USA), e posteriormente os dados foram analisados. Resultado A média e o desvio padrão dos maiores microgaps foram observados na parte apical do implante nos lados direito e esquerdo, sendo 1,44±2,68 e 1,16±1,49 μm, respectivamente. Os menores microgaps foram na parte superior do implante nos lados direito e esquerdo, sendo 0,60±0,73 e 0,66±0,67 μm, respectivamente. Contudo, no teste de Kruskal-Wallis, não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa entre as regiões dos implantes, tanto para o lado esquerdo (p=0,692) como para o direito (p=0,865). No teste de Mann-Whitney, não houve diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os lados para as diferentes regiões dos implantes. Conclusão Mesmo com a presença de microgaps na interface implante-pilar protético, estes apresentam tamanho inferior ao que causaria problemas biológicos e mecânicos. As amostras analisadas quanto à sua compatibilidade de encaixe foram satisfatórias.

Abstract Introduction The implant-prosthetic abutment interface and the formation of its microgaps are relevant aspects in load transfer and biological response and are linked to the success of the rehabilitation. Objective To evaluate microgaps at the internal connection interface of the Cone Morse implant and the prosthetic component surface by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Material and method Twenty 3.75 x 11.0 mm Cone Morse dental implants with their respective Singular® prosthetic abutments were used (Singular Implants, RN, Brazil). The straight trunnions were attached to the implants with a 32N/cm2 torque and the ES260 Epoxy Resin-based set emerged to allow longitudinal sectioning of the sample. The samples were analyzed and the microgaps measured in SEM (JEOL JCM-5700, MA, USA), and later the data were analyzed. Result The mean and standard deviation of the largest microgaps were observed in the apical part of the right and left side 1.44±2.68 and 1.16±1.49 μm, respectively. The smallest microgaps were on the upper implant right and left sides 0.60±0.73 and 0.66±0.67 μm, respectively. However, in the Kruskal-Wallis test there was no statistically significant difference between the implant regions, both for the left side (p=0.692) and right side (p=0.865). The Mann-Whitney test, there were no statistically significant differences between the sides for the different regions of the implants. Conclusion Even with the presence of microgaps in the implant-post interface, it presents a smaller size than the one presenting biological and mechanical problems. The samples analyzed for their fitting compatibility were satisfactory.

RESUMO Introdução: A lesão central de células gigantes é própria dos ossos gnáticos, sendo um tumor benigno não odontogênico. É uma lesão de crescimento predominantemente lento, bem circunscrito e assintomático, geralmente diagnosticada através de algum exame de rotina ou, em casos mais avançados, quando se começa a visualizar alguma alteração estético-anatômica ou através da queixa do paciente de algum desconforto localizado na região. Objetivo: Ilustrar um caso clínico de lesão central de células gigantes e sua resolução envolvendo momento cirúrgico e reabordagem que inclui a homeopatia na proposta terapêutica. Apresentação do caso: Paciente do sexo feminino, inicialmente com 4 anos de idade com uma lesão na região de pré-maxila. Após avaliação radiográfica, tomográfica, exames sanguíneos e biópsia incisional, foi realizada, em primeiro momento, a exérese da lesão sob anestesia geral, por curetagem com aplicação de solução de carnoy. Após proservação e surgimento de imagem radiopaca nos exames, deu-se início ao tratamento não invasivo com homeopatia e injeções de corticoide visando à redução e neoformação óssea em área sugestiva de tecido cicatricial. Conclusões: Abordagens mais conservadoras podem ser, em muitos casos, uma opção plausível que acaba por livrar o paciente de cirurgias mutilantes.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Giant cell central lesion is characteristic of the gnathic bones, being a non-odontogenic benign tumor. Classified as a predominantly slow grotwh, well-circumscribed and asymptomatic lesion usually diagnosed through routine examination or in some and more advanced cases once it begins to create some aesthetic-anatomical alteration or when the patient starts complaining of some located discomfort in the region. Objective: To present a clinical case of central giant cell lesion and its resolution involving surgical approach and second management, which includes homeopathy as a therapeutic proposal. Case presentation: central giant cell lesion located in the premaxilla region in a 4 years old female patient. After radiographic, tomographic and blood exams evaluation, followed by incisional biopsy and diagnostic, leading to surgical approach to remove the entire lesion by curettage with Carnoy’s solution application under general anesthesia. After appearance of radiopaque imaging in the proservation examinations, the non-invasive treatment by corticoid injection and homeopathy got started aiming the reduction of cicatricial tissue’s suggestive area and neoformation of the bone. Conclusions : approaches that are more conservative can be, in many cases, a plausible option that ends up ridding the patient of mutilating surgeries.

Objetivo: Presentar un caso clínico de lesión central de células gigantes y su resolución involucrando momento quirúrgico y reabordaje que incluye la homeopatía en la propuesta terapéutica. Presentación del caso: Paciente del sexo femenino, inicialmente con 4 años de edad con una lesión en la región de pre-maxila. Después de la evaluación radiográfica, tomográfica, exámenes sanguíneos y biópsia incisional con el diagnóstico, se realizó en un primer momento la exéresis de la lesión bajo anestesia general, por curetaje con aplicación de solución de carnoy. En los exámenes de acompañamiento, después de la aparición de imagen radiopaca, se inició el tratamiento no invasivo con homeopatía e inyecciones de corticoides para la reducción y neoformación ósea en el área sugestiva de tejido cicatricial. Conclusiones: Los enfoques más conservadores pueden ser, en muchos casos, una opción plausible que termina librando al paciente de cirugías de mutilación.

Abstract Pain due to administration of local anesthetics is the primary reason for patients' fear and anxiety, and various methods are used to minimize it. This study aimed to measure the degree of pain during administration of anesthesia and determine the latency time and duration of pulpal anesthesia using two anesthetic methods in the maxilla. Materials and Methods: A randomized, single-blind, split-mouth clinical trial was conducted with 41 volunteers who required class I restorations in the maxillary first molars. Local anesthesia was administered with a needleless jet injection system (experimental group) or with a carpule syringe (control) using a 30-gauge short needle. The method of anesthesia and laterality of the maxilla were randomized. A pulp electric tester measured the latency time and duration of anesthesia in the second molar. Visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to measure the degree of pain during the anesthetic method. Data were tabulated and then analyzed by a statistician. The t-test was used to analyze the differences between the groups for basal electrical stimulation. Duration of anesthesia and degree of pain were compared using the Mann-Whitney test. A 5% significance level was considered. Results: There was no statistical difference in the basal electrical stimulation threshold (mA) and degree of pain between the two methods of anesthesia (p>0.05). Latency time was 2 minutes for all subjects. The duration of pulpal anesthesia showed no statistical difference (minutes) between the two methods (p<0.001), with a longer duration for the traditional method of anesthesia (median of 40 minutes). Conclusions: The two anesthetics methods did not differ concerning the pain experienced during anesthesia. Latency lasted 2 minutes for all subjects; the traditional infiltration anesthesia resulted in a longer anesthetic duration compared with the needleless jet injection.

Resumo Introdução A proporção áurea, representada pela razão matemática 1:1.618, tem sido investigada na especialidade Ortodontia e no procedimento de Cirurgia Ortognática, a fim de ser estabelecida como um guia de sucesso clínico relacionado à estética facial. Objetivo Verificar a estética dos perfis faciais de pacientes Classes II e III de Angle, antes e após tratamento ortodôntico-cirúrgico, além de correlacionar 13 razões dentoesqueléticas e cinco razões de tecidos moles à proporção áurea. Material e método Um total de 94 radiografias cefalométricas laterais foram analisadas, em que 13 razões dentoesqueléticas e cinco razões em tecidos moles foram medidas e comparadas ao número áureo. Adicionalmente, uma análise subjetiva da estética facial pré e pós-tratamento foi realizada por 270 examinadores. Resultado As razões dentoesqueléticas 1, 3, 6, 7, 8 e 9 aproximaram-se do número áureo após a cirurgia ortognática, nos pacientes Classe III. Para o perfil mole, apenas a razão 4 se aproximou ao número áureo, em ambos os pacientes Classe II e III. Em relação à avaliação subjetiva da estética, 91,49% dos perfis faciais foram considerados mais harmônicos após o tratamento. Conclusão Frente à metodologia usada, pode-se concluir que a proporção áurea exerce pouca influência na avaliação da estética facial, não servindo como um guia para o planejamento e o tratamento ortodôntico-ortognático.

Abstract Introduction The golden proportion, represented by the mathematical ratio 1:1.618, has been investigated in Orthodontics and orthognathic surgery in order to be established as a guide to clinical success related to facial aesthetics. Objective To verify the facial aesthetics of patients with Angle Class II and III deformities pre and post orthodontic-surgical treatment, and to analyze if 13 dental-skeletal patters (ratios) and 5 soft tissue ratios moved closer to or further away from the golden proportion after the orthognathic surgery. Material and method A total of 94 lateral cephalometric radiographs, in which 13 dental-skeletal ratios and 5 soft tissue ratios were measured and compared to the golden number. In addition, 270 examiners performed a subjective analysis of facial esthetics before and after treatment. Result Dental-skeletal ratios 1, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9 moved closer to the golden number after orthognathic surgery in Class III patients. For the soft tissue profile, only ratio 4 moved closer to the golden number in both Class II and III patients. Regarding the subjective evaluation of facial aesthetics, 91.49% of the facial profiles were considered more harmonic after treatment. Conclusion Considering the methodology, it may be concluded that the golden proportion had little effect on the facial aesthetics evaluation and should not work as a guide for orthodontic-orthognathic planning and treatment.
