ABSTRACT The early seedling stage is one of the most vulnerable and critical growth stages in the plant life cycle and determines the final plant stand and yield. Corn hybrids have distinct degrees of drought tolerance, and exploiting this characteristic is important to enhance agricultural production in many tropical regions of the world. Fourteen corn hybrids commonly grown in the central-western region of Brazil, in Cassilândia, Mato Grosso do Sul, were assessed for drought tolerance during the early plant growth stage. Plants were grown in the Plant Ecophysiology Laboratory under non-stressful (control) and stressful (moderate drought) conditions for 28 days. Drought stress was induced with an -0.30 MPa iso-osmotic solution prepared with polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000). The emergence rate, seedling length, and seedling dry matter were measured, and then drought tolerance indexes were calculated. Our results showed that root length is an important morphological trait for plant adaptation to drought stress conditions. Therefore, plant breeding programs should select corn genotypes with longer roots to develop commercial hybrids with superior performance under limited soil water availability. The corn hybrids FS 575 PWU, GNZ 7757 VIP3, LG 36745 PRO4, and MG 545 PWU have greater tolerance to drought stress and are the most suitable genotypes to be grown in conditions of low soil water availability. The AG 8088 PRO2 corn hybrid has greater susceptibility to drought stress and should not be recommended for cultivation in conditions of reduced soil water availability.

ABSTRACT Delays in soybean harvesting can limit seed viability and vigor. In this study, soybean cultivar seeds’ physiological and sanitary quality was evaluated in response to harvest delay. The experimental design used was completely randomized blocks, arranged in a split-plot scheme, with three replicates. The plots were represented by the cultivation of two soybean cultivars (BMX Bônus IPRO and BMX Olimpo IPRO), while the subplots were represented by three harvest times [0, 7, 14 days after the seed’s full maturity (stage R8)]. The following characteristics of the physiological and sanitary quality of the seeds were measured: water content, plant emergence, total dry matter, germination, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, and seed health. The delay in the soybean harvest affects the seeds’ physiological and sanitary quality. Seeds harvested seven days after full maturity have a higher incidence of Aspergillus flavus and Macrophomina sp. In comparison, seeds harvested 14 days after full maturity have a higher incidence of Phomopsis sp. and Fusarium sp.

ABSTRACT Harvest delay can alter the physiological and sanitary quality of sorghum seeds due to the longer exposure time of seeds to adverse environmental conditions in the field. In this study, we investigated the impact of delayed Sorghum sp. harvest on the physiological and sanitary quality of seeds in four hybrids grown in the tropical soil of the Brazilian Cerrado region. Plants from four Sorghum sp. hybrids (IPA SUDAN 4202, BRS 658, BRS 810, and BRS 373) were grown and submitted to four seed harvest periods (0, 7, 14, and 21 days after stage 9 - seed physiological maturity). The treatments were arranged in a completely randomized block design in a 4 × 4 factorial, with four replicates. At each harvest period, the thousand-seed weight, water content, first count of the germination test, germination, seedling emergence, emergence speed index, seedling dry matter, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, and sanitary quality of seeds were determined. Seeds of higher physiological and sanitary quality of the IPA SUDAN 4202 and BRS 658 sorghum hybrids can be obtained when the harvest is carried out up to 7 days after the physiological maturity stage. However, the delay in seed harvesting at 14 and 21 days after physiological maturity results in a higher incidence of Colletotrichum sp., Curvularia sp., Rhizoctonia sp., and Alternaria sp. on the seeds of these hybrids. Delaying the harvest of sorghum seeds from 7 days after the physiological maturity stage compromises seed vigor and viability and increases the incidence of pathogens.

ABSTRACT Salinity stress severely restricts plant nutrition and hinders biochemical and physiological processes crucial for growth. In several crop systems bioactive products which confer growth promotion, are applied as a sustainable alternative for contributing to food security. The aim of this work was to evaluate the biochemical contribution of QuitoMax® to hormonal and enzymatic metabolism in tomato under saline stress. Three treatments were applied: saline without QuitoMax®, nonsaline + QuitoMax® and saline + QuitoMax®. A tolerant (Amalia) and a susceptible (Claudia) tomato variety were used as experimental models. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was measured as a morphological variable, and peroxidase (POD), glutamine synthetase (GS) and nitrate reductase (NR) enzyme activities were determined. Gibberellic (GA) and abscisic acid (ABA) concentrations were also determined. Due to the effects of QuitoMax®, the plants maintained high NDVI values even under saline conditions. A decrease in POD and GS activity and an increase in NR activity were also found. The GA concentration in the leaves was higher in the tolerant variety when QuitoMax® was applied than in the saline treatment but lower in the susceptible variety. The opposite behavior was found when the ABA concentration was quantified. This study demonstrates the protective action of QuitoMax® under salinity stress on tomato crops in both tolerant and susceptible varieties. Resumo A deficiência de fósforo (P) tem sido apontada com um dos principais estresses abióticos que limita a produtividade da soja em condições tropicais- o objetivo da pesquisa foi de avaliar a eficiência de utilização do P de 25 cultivares de soja [Glycine max (L.) Merrill.] Cultivadas em um solo arenoso do Cerrado brasileiro. Os genótipos de soja responsivos e eficientes quanto à utilização de P foram classificados pelo método de Fageria e Kluthcouski (1980) e o método hierárquico de agrupamento de variância mínima de Ward para discriminar grupos similares. O experimento foi conduzido no delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 2 × 25 com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos por dois níveis de disponibilidade de P no solo [baixa disponibilidade (20 mg kg-1) e alta disponibilidade (200 mg kg-1)] e por 25 cultivares de soja onde foram avaliados a altura de inserção da primeira vagem, número de vagens por planta, número de grãos por vagem, massa de 1000 grãos e produção de grãos. Com os resultados de produção de grãos foi calculada a eficiência de resposta à adubação fosfatada para a determinação de uma nova técnica de agrupação segundo a similaridade entre genótipos.

Abstract Phosphorus (P) deficiency has been identified as one of the main abiotic stresses that limits soybean productivity under tropical conditions - the objective of the research was to evaluate the efficiency of P utilization of 25 soybean cultivars [Glycine max (L. ) Merrill.] Cultivated in a sandy soil of the Brazilian Cerrado. Responsive and efficient soybean genotypes in terms of P utilization were classified by the method of Fageria and Kluthcouski (1980) and the hierarchical method of clustering of minimum variance of Ward to discriminate similar groups. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design in a 2 × 25 factorial design with four replications. The treatments consisted of two levels of P availability in the soil [low availability (20 mg kg-1) and high availability (200 mg kg-1)] and 25 soybean cultivars where the height of insertion of the first pod was evaluated. , number of pods per plant, number of grains per pod, mass of 1000 grains and grain yield. With the results of grain production, the efficiency of response to phosphate fertilization was calculated for the determination of a new grouping technique according to the similarity between genotypes.

RESUMO A aplicação tardia de nitrogênio (N) pode ser uma prática agronômica para aumentar o rendimento da soja e o teor de proteína dos grãos em cultivares modernos de alto potencial produtivo. Um estudo para avaliar a resposta de cultivares de soja em relação à aplicação tardia de N em suplementação à inoculação de Bradyrhizobium spp. foi conduzido em dois solos do Cerrado de média e alta fertilidade durante a safra 2019/2020. Os tratamentos foram dispostos no delineamento de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 2 × 2 × 5: dois ambientes de produção agrícola [UFMS 1 (média fertilidade) e UFMS 2 (alta fertilidade)], duas cultivares de soja (TMG 7067 IPRO e BMX Bônus IPRO) e cinco doses de aplicação tardia de N (0, 50, 100, 150 e 200 kg N ha-1), com quatro repetições. As doses de N foram aplicadas em cobertura no estádio fenológico R5.3. Análise de correlação canônica foi utilizada para avaliar a relação entre o grupo de variáveis independentes (ambientes de produção agrícola, cultivar de soja e doses de aplicação de N) e dependentes (características agronômicas da soja). As aplicações tardias de N não afetaram as características agronômicas (altura de planta, altura da primeira vagem, número de vagens por planta, número de grãos por vagem e massa de 1.000 grãos) e não aumentaram a produtividade e o teor de proteína dos grãos das duas cultivares de soja, independentemente do nível de fertilidade (médio ou alto) da área produção agrícola. Conclui-se que quando estirpes eficientes de Bradyrhizobium spp. são utilizadas no cultivo da soja em solos do Cerrado de média e alta fertilidade, não há necessidade de aplicar doses tardias de fertilizante nitrogenado.

ABSTRACT Late season nitrogen (N) applications may serve as cultural practices to increase soybean yield and grain protein concentration in modern high-yielding cultivars. A study to evaluate the response of soybean cultivars to late N application in supplementation to Bradyrhizobium spp. inoculation was conducted in two Brazilian Cerrado agricultural soils with medium and high fertility during the 2019/2020 growing season. Treatments were arranged in a randomized block design in a 2×2×5 factorial scheme: two agricultural production environments [UFMS 1 (medium fertility) and UFMS 2 (high fertility)], two soybean cultivars (TMG 7067 IPRO and BMX Bônus IPRO), and five late N application rates (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg N ha-1), with four replicates. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) was used to investigate the interrelationships between the groups of independent (agricultural production environments, soybean cultivars, and N application rates) and dependent (soybean agronomic traits) variables. Nitrogen rates were applied in topdressing at the R5.3 soybean growth stage. Late N applications did not affect soybean agronomic traits (plant height, first pod height, pod number per plant, grain number per pod, and 1,000-grain mass) and did not increase the grain protein concentration or yield of the soybean cultivars, regardless of the fertility level of the agricultural area. We conclude that when efficient strains of Bradyrhizobium spp. are used in soybean cropping in medium- and high-fertility Cerrado soils, there is no need to apply late rates of N fertilizer.

Resumo A calagem e adubação mineral podem melhorar o crescimento e a qualidade das mudas de espécies florestais. Os efeitos da aplicação de adubação nitrogenada e calcário sobre o crescimento e a qualidade das mudas de canafístula [Peltophorum dubium (Sprengel) Taubert] foram investigados neste estudo. Plantas de Peltophorum dubium foram cultivadas em sacos de polietileno de 1,4 L, preenchidos com solo arenoso e mantidos em condições de casa de vegetação. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 4 × 2: quatro doses de N (0, 100, 200 e 300 mg dm-3) e aplicação ou não de calcário, com quatro repetições. A altura da planta, diâmetro do caule, relação altura/diâmetro e número de folhas foram mensurados aos 30, 60, 90 e 120 dias após a emergência. Aos 120 dias, também foram determinados o volume radicular, massa seca da parte aérea e das raízes, acúmulo de N na parte aérea, relação entre matéria seca da parte aérea/raiz e o índice de qualidade de Dickson. Os resultados reportaram que a aplicação de calcário e de fertilizante nitrogenado tem efeito benéfico sobre a maioria das características da parte aérea e das raízes das mudas de Peltophorum dubium, e quando as mudas de Peltophorum dubium são produzidas em um substrato constituído de um solo arenoso da região do Cerrado, a aplicação de calcário e o uso de 200 mg N dm-3 aplicado em cobertura deve ser recomendado para a obtenção de mudas de alta qualidade.

Abstract The liming and mineral fertilization can improve the growth and quality of forest species seedlings. The effects of the application of nitrogen fertilizer rates and limestone on growth and quality of Peltophorum dubium (Sprengel) Taubert seedlings were investigated in this study. Peltophorum dubium plants were grown in 1.4-L polyethylene bags filled with sandy soil under greenhouse conditions. Treatments were arranged in a randomized block design in a 4 × 2 factorial: four of N application rates (0, 100, 200 and 300 mg dm-3) and application or non-application of limestone, with four replicates. The plant height, stem diameter, height/diameter ratio and number of leaves were measured at 30, 60, 90 and 120 days after emergence. At 120 days, root volume, shoot and root dry matter, N accumulation in shoots, shoot/root dry matter ratio, and Dickson quality index was also measured. The results reported that limestone and N fertilizer application have a positive effect on most of the growth and quality traits of Peltophorum dubium seedlings, and when Peltophorum dubium seedlings are produced in a substrate consisting of a sandy soil from Brazilian Cerrado, the limestone application and use of 200 mg N dm-3 in topdressing should be recommended to obtain high-quality seedlings.

RESUMO A qualidade fisiológica das sementes pode ser alterada pelo manejo nutricional da cultura da soja, principalmente pela adubação com nitrogênio (N), que é componente estrutural de diversos compostos orgânicos, incluindo as proteínas, e possui importante função catalítica na ativação de diversas enzimas. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar os efeitos da aplicação de fontes e doses de fertilizante nitrogenado mineral associado à inoculação de Bradyrhizobium spp. sobre a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de soja foram investigados nesta pesquisa. Os tratamentos foram dispostos no delineamento de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 3 × 5 [três fontes de fertilizante de N (inoculação de Bradyrhizobium spp.; inoculação de Bradyrhizobium spp. + aplicação ureia e inoculação de Bradyrhizobium spp. + aplicação de sulfato de amônio] e da aplicação de cinco doses de N (0, 50, 100, 150 e 200 kg N ha-1)], com quatro repetições. O fertilizante nitrogenado foi aplicado em cobertura no estádio fenológico R2, quando as plantas de soja estavam em plena floração. Os seguintes parâmetros de qualidade das sementes de soja foram avaliados: massa de 1.000 sementes, teor de proteína bruta, germinação, teste de primeira contagem de germinação, emergência de plântulas, índice de velocidade de emergência, envelhecimento acelerado, condutividade elétrica, vigor e viabilidade das sementes pelo teste de tetrazólio. A aplicação de 50 kg N ha-1 de fertilizante mineral (sulfato de amônio ou ureia) associada a inoculação de Bradyrhizobium spp. melhorou a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de soja, resultando na maior porcentagem de germinação, emergência e índice de velocidade de emergência de plântulas. A aplicação de sulfato de amônio ou ureia (50 kg N ha-1) durante o estádio de pleno florescimento de plantas de soja inoculadas com Bradyrhizobium spp. pode melhorar a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de soja.

ABSTRACT The physiological seed quality can be altered by nutritional management of the soybean crop, especially by the fertilization with nitrogen (N), which is a structural component of several organic compounds, including proteins, and has an important catalytic role in the activation of several enzymes. The aim of this research was to investigate the effects of sources and application rates of mineral N fertilizer associated with inoculation of Bradyrhizobium spp. on physiological quality of soybean seeds. The treatments were arranged in a completely randomized block design, in a 3 × 5 factorial arrangement [three N fertilizer sources (Bradyrhizobium spp. inoculation; Bradyrhizobium spp. inoculation + urea application; and, Bradyrhizobium spp. inoculation + ammonium sulfate application) and five N application rates (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg N ha-1)], with four replicates. Nitrogen fertilizer was applied in topdressing at R2 stage when soybean plants were in full flowering. The quality parameters evaluated in soybean seeds were: 1,000-seed mass, seed protein content, germination, first germination count test, seedling emergence, emergence speed index, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, vigor and viability of seeds by tetrazolium test. The application of 50 kg N ha-1 of mineral fertilizer (ammonium sulfate or urea) associated with the Bradyrhizobium spp. inoculation enhanced the physiological quality of soybean seeds, resulting in higher seed germination percentage and higher emergence and seedling emergence speed index. The application of ammonium sulfate or urea (50 kg N ha-1) at full flowering of soybean plants inoculated with Bradyrhizobium spp. can improve the physiological quality of soybean seeds.

RESUMO Não é ainda bem definida a fonte de alumínio para gerar toxidez em experimentos de solução nutritiva com plantas de arroz, embora o sulfato de alumínio e potássio tem sido utilizado como fonte para gerar toxidez por alumínio. Entretanto, em publicações mais recentes, tem-se utilizado o cloreto de alumínio. Assim, o objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a capacidade de fontes e doses de alumínio em causar toxidez em plantas de arroz de terras altas cultivadas em solução nutritiva. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados, disposto em esquema fatorial 2 x 5, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram duas fontes de alumínio (sulfato de alumínio e de potássio - AlK(SO4)2.12H2O e cloreto de alumínio - AlCl3.6H2O) e cinco doses de alumínio em solução nutritiva (0, 370, 740, 1100 e 1480 μmol L-1). O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, no município de Botucatu, São Paulo; foi iniciado em abril de 2012 e conduzido por 56 dias. Ao utilizar o cloreto de alumínio, as plantas de arroz apresentaram menor produção de massa seca total e de raiz; área e volume radicular; comprimento de raízes médias e grossas; teor e acúmulo de potássio e sulfato. Utilizando-se sulfato de alumínio e de potássio há menor atividade e disponibilidade de alumínio, além de formação de grande quantidade de compostos de alumínio não tóxico às plantas (sulfato de alumínio) na solução nutritiva. As doses de alumínio entre 1100 a 1480 µmol L-1, correspondente à atividade de alumínio de 336,8 a 429,0 µmol L-1, utilizando o cloreto de alumínio são mais eficazes em causar toxidez por alumínio em plantas de arroz de terras altas cultivadas em solução nutritiva.

ABSTRACT The aluminum source to produce toxicity in upland rice in nutrient solution experiments is not yet well established, althought the aluminum potassium sulfate has been utilized source to produce aluminum toxicity. However, in recent studies have used aluminum chloride. The aim of this study was to evaluate the capacity of aluminum sources and doses to produce toxicity in upland rice plants grown in nutrient solution. The experiment was arranged in a block randomized design, in a 2 x 5 factorial scheme and four repetitions. The treatments were two aluminum sources (aluminum potassium sulfate - AlK(SO4)2.12H2O and aluminum chloride - AlCl3.6H2O) and five aluminum doses in nutrient solution (0, 370, 740, 1100 and 1480 μmol L-1). The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in Botucatu city, São Paulo state, Brazil, starting in April 2012, and was carried out for 56 days from transplanting of the seedlings. Using aluminum chloride, the rice plants show lower production of root and total dry weight, area and root volume, medium and thick root length, potassium and sulfur contents and accumulations. Using aluminum potassium sulfate, there are lower aluminum activity and availability, besides the formation of large amount of aluminum compounds non-toxic to the plants (aluminum sulfate) in the nutrient solution. The aluminum doses between 1100 to 1480 µmol L-1, corresponding to aluminum activity of 336.8 to 429.0 µmol L-1 of aluminum chloride as source, are more effective to produce aluminum toxicity in upland rice plants grown in nutrient solution.

RESUMO O tamanho da semente constitui um importante indicador de qualidade fisiológica, por afetar sua germinação e o crescimento de plântulas, especialmente em condições adversas. Objetivou-se investigar os efeitos do tamanho da semente na germinação e no crescimento inicial de plântulas de amendoim, em condições de salinidade e restrição hídrica. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 3 × 3: três classes de tamanho de sementes (pequena, média e grande) e três tratamentos de estresse (controle e estresse salino ou hídrico), com quatro repetições. Estresses salino e hídrico não reduzem a porcentagem de germinação das sementes de tamanho médio e grande; no entanto, a germinação das sementes pequenas é reduzida sob estresse salino. O estresse hídrico reduz drasticamente o crescimento da parte aérea das plântulas, independentemente do tamanho da semente, enquanto o crescimento das raízes é maior nas plântulas oriundas de sementes médias e grandes sob condições de estresse hídrico. Em condições controle, o uso de sementes grandes é preferível, resultando em plântulas mais vigorosas e com maior acúmulo de matéria seca. Sementes de tamanho médio são mais adaptadas às condições adversas do ambiente e, portanto, devem ser utilizadas em condições de escassez de água e de excesso de sal no solo na época de semeadura. As plântulas são mais tolerantes à salinidade do que ao estresse hídrico durante a fase de germinação e de crescimento inicial em condições de laboratório.

ABSTRACT Seed size is an important indicator of physiological quality, since it may affect seed germination and seedling growth, especially under stress conditions. This study aimed to investigate the effects of seed size on germination and initial seedling growth, under salinity and water stress conditions. The treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design, in a 3 × 3 factorial scheme: three seed size classes (small, medium and large) and three stress treatments (control, saline or water stress), with four replicates. Water and salt stresses do not reduce the germination rate of medium and large seeds; however, the germination rate of small seeds is reduced under salt stress conditions. Drought stress drastically reduces the shoot growth of seedlings regardless of seed size, whereas root growth is higher in seedlings from medium and large seeds under water stress conditions. Under non-stressful environments, the use of large seeds is preferable, resulting in more vigorous seedlings with a greater dry matter accumulation. Medium-size seeds are more adapted to adverse environmental conditions and, therefore, should be used under conditions of water shortage and salt excess in the soil at sowing time. Seedlings are more tolerant to salinity than to water stress during the germination stage and initial growth under laboratory conditions.

RESUMO: A germinação e o crescimento de plantas de melão (Cucumis melo L.) podem ser severamente afetadas pelo excesso de sais no solo ou na água de irrigação. No entanto, os efeitos negativos do estresse salino podem ser amenizados com o uso de métodos adequados de condicionamento das sementes. Assim, este estudo objetivou investigar os efeitos do osmocondicionamento como indutor da tolerância ao estresse salino em sementes de melão expostas à níveis de salinidade. As sementes foram imersas por 22 h à 25 °C em água destilada (hidrocondicionamento) ou em solução de 0,5% de KNO3 (osmocondicionamento). Após secagem, as sementes foram distribuídas em caixas plásticas com papel mata-borrão contendo as diferentes soluções de NaCl preparadas com potencial osmótico de 0,0 MPa (controle), -0,3 MPa (estresse suave) e -0,6 MPa (estresse severo). Um tratamento com sementes secas não condicionadas foi utilizado como controle. As caixas plásticas foram mantidas em germinador de sementes, a 25 °C por 14 dias. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 3 × 3, com quatro repetições de 25 sementes. Os resultados mostraram que o condicionamento de sementes com água e KNO3 pode ser aplicado com sucesso em sementes de melão para amenizar os efeitos adversos do estresse salino durante o estágio inicial de crescimento das plantas. No entanto, sob estresse salino severo, o hidrocondicionamento deve ser utilizado por resultar em maior percentagem de germinação e maior taxa de crescimento inicial das plântulas quando comparado ao osmocondicionamento. O uso de sementes de melão sem condicionamento prévio não deve ser adotado em áreas de cultivo afetadas pela salinidade, pois resultam em baixa taxa de germinação e reduzido crescimento inicial das plantas.

ABSTRACT: The germination and growth of melon (Cucumis melo L.) plants can be severely affected by excess salts in the soil or irrigation water; however, negative effects of salt stress can be attenuated using appropriate methods of seed priming. Thus, effects of osmopriming as inducer of salt stress tolerance in melon seeds exposed to salinity levels were investigated in this study. Seeds were soaked for 22 h at 25 °C in the dark in distilled water (hydropriming) or 0.5% KNO3 solution (osmopriming), and after drying, were distributed in plastic boxes with blotter paper containing different NaCl solutions prepared with osmotic pressure of 0.0 MPa (control), -0.3 MPa (mild stress), and -0.6 MPa (severe stress). Unprimed dry seeds were taken as control. The plastic boxes were kept into a seed germinator, at 25 °C for 14 days. A completely randomized design in a 3 × 3 factorial schemes with four replicates of 25 seeds was used. Results showed that the seed priming with water and KNO3 may be successfully applied on melon seeds to alleviate the adverse effects of saline stress in initial stages of plant growth. However, under severe salt stress conditions, hydropriming should be used because it results in higher germination and initial growth rate of the seedlings when compared to the osmopriming. Use of unprimed seeds should not be adopted in cultivation areas affected by salinity because they result in low germination rate and reduced initial plant growth.

RESUMO O processo de secagem e o armazenamento podem interferir na qualidade das sementes de braquiária humidícola [Urochloa humidicola (Rendle.) Morrone & Zuloago, syn. Brachiaria humidicola (Rendle.) Schweick.]. Objetivou-se avaliar a qualidade física, fisiológica e sanitária de sementes de braquiária humidícola cv. Llanero submetidas a superfícies e ambientes de secagem e armazenadas por 1 e 8 meses. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, disposto em esquema fatorial 4 × 2 × 2 + 2, sendo quatro superfícies de secagem (solo, asfalto, concreto e cerâmica), dois ambientes (secagem à sombra e ao sol), dois períodos de armazenamento (1 e 8 meses) e dois tratamentos adicionais com secagem natural em saco de papel em condições de laboratório (controle) e armazenado por 1 ou 8 meses, com quatro repetições. Foram avaliados o teor de água, viabilidade (teste de tetrazólio), condutividade elétrica, germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação e a qualidade sanitária das sementes. A secagem ao sol prejudicou a qualidade fisiológica das sementes devido às altas temperaturas (46,8-51,0 ºC) da superfície de secagem; porém, reduziu a incidência de patógenos. A secagem de sementes em sacos de papel à sombra resulta em maior qualidade fisiológica; porém, a qualidade sanitária é comprometida. Todavia, os patógenos presentes nas sementes não inibiram sua viabilidade e vigor. O armazenamento por oito meses reduz a qualidade das sementes.

ABSTRACT The drying process and storage may interfere in the quality of creeping signalgrass seeds [Urochloa humidicola (Rendle.) Morrone & Zuloago, syn. Brachiaria humidicola (Rendle.) Schweick.]. This study aimed to evaluate the physical, physiological and sanitary quality of creeping signalgrass cv. Llanero seeds submitted to drying surfaces and environments and stored for two periods (1 and 8 months). The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design, in a 4 × 2 × 2 + 2 factorial arrangement, with four drying surfaces (soil, asphalt, concrete and ceramic floor), two drying environments (seeds exposed to the sun or shade), two seed storage periods (1 and 8 months) and two additional treatments with drying in paper bags under laboratory conditions (control) and stored for 1 or 8 months, with four replicates. The water content, viability by the tetrazolium test, electrical conductivity, germination rate, germination rate index and seed sanitary quality were measured. Drying at full sun impaired the physiological quality of the seeds due to the high temperatures (46.8-51.0 ºC) of the drying surface; however, reduced the incidence of pathogens. The drying of seeds in paper bags under shade results in a higher physiological quality, but the sanitary quality is compromised. However, the pathogens present in the seeds did not inhibit their viability and vigor. The storage for eight months reduces the seed quality.

RESUMO A adubação nitrogenada pode interferir na qualidade das sementes de soja. Objetivou-se determinar a qualidade fisiológica e sanitária de sementes de soja, em resposta a doses e épocas de aplicação de nitrogênio (N) associada à inoculação com Bradyrhizobium japonicum. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados, disposto em esquema fatorial 2 x 3 x 4 [duas cultivares de soja (BRS 1074 IPRO e ST 797 IPRO), três épocas de aplicação (semeadura, 30 e 50 dias após a emergência) e quatro doses de nitrogênio (0 kg ha-1, 20 kg ha-1, 40 kg ha-1 e 60 kg ha-1)], com quatro repetições. Determinou-se a massa de 1.000 sementes, grau de umidade, germinação, altura de plântula, comprimento da radícula, fitomassa seca total da plântula, emergência, condutividade elétrica, dano mecânico, vigor e viabilidade (teste de tetrazólio) e a qualidade sanitária das sementes. O uso de N mineral, associado à inoculação de bactérias Bradyrhizobium japonicum, não se mostra consistente, quanto aos seus efeitos sobre a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de soja, embora a incidência de patógenos possa ser reduzida.

ABSTRACT Nitrogen fertilization may interfere in the quality of soybean seeds. This study aimed to determine the physiological and sanitary quality of soybean seeds, in response to levels and times of nitrogen (N) application associated with Bradyrhizobium japonicum inoculation. Treatments were arranged in a randomized block design, in a 2 × 3 × 4 factorial arrangement [two soybean cultivars (BRS 1074 IPRO and ST 797 IPRO), three application times (sowing, 30 and 50 days after emergence) and four N levels (0 kg ha-1, 20 kg ha-1, 40 kg ha-1 and 60 kg ha-1), with four replicates. The 1,000-seed mass, moisture content, germination rate, seedling height, shoot length, primary root length, total seedling dry matter, electrical conductivity, mechanical damage, vigor and viability (tetrazolium test) and sanitary quality of the seeds were measured. The use of mineral N, associated with the inoculation of B. japonicum bacteria, does not prove to be consistent, in terms of its effects on the physiological quality of soybean seeds, although the incidence of pathogens may be reduced.

RESUMO A aplicação de silício (Si) ao solo pode aumentar o rendimento de grãos da cultura da soja, por melhorar a fixação biológica de nitrogênio, devido ao seu efeito benéfico sobre a simbiose Bradyrhizobium-soja. Objetivou-se investigar o efeito da aplicação de silicato de cálcio e magnésio no crescimento, nodulação e absorção de nitrogênio (N), em duas cultivares de soja [BRS 1074 IPRO (transgênica) e BRS-MG 800A (convencional)], em condições de casa-de-vegetação. A aplicação de silicato aumentou significativamente o número de nódulos apenas para a BRS-MG 800A, enquanto os efeitos positivos da adição de silicato no tamanho do nódulo, nível de clorofila e concentração foliar de N foram observados em ambas as cultivares. As cultivares de soja têm distinta resposta à aplicação de silicato, em relação ao crescimento e produção de matéria seca, sendo a BRS 1074 IPRO mais responsiva que a BRS-MG 800A. Portanto, o Si pode induzir a formação de nódulos radiculares em plantas de soja e levar a aumentos significativos na fixação biológica de N e no crescimento das plantas. Esses resultados ressaltam que o Si não está envolvido apenas na melhoria do crescimento das plantas, mas, também, pode ser considerado um importante elemento para melhorar o desempenho simbiótico destas. No entanto, a base fisiológica de como e onde o silicato exerce sua influência na nodulação e na fixação biológica de nitrogênio ainda permanece desconhecida.

ABSTRACT The application of silicon (Si) to the soil can increase the grain yield of the soybean crop by improving the nitrogen biological fixation, due to its beneficial effect on the Bradyrhizobium-soybean symbiosis. This study aimed to investigate the effect of fertilization with calcium and magnesium silicate on plant growth, root nodulation and nitrogen (N) uptake, in two soybean cultivars [BRS 1074 IPRO (transgenic) and BRS-MG 800A (conventional)], under greenhouse conditions. The application of silicate significantly increased the number of root nodules only for the BRS-MG 800A, while the positive effects of the silicate addition on nodule size, chlorophyll level and leaf N concentration were observed in both cultivars. The soybean cultivars show distinct responses to the silicate application, with respect to growth and dry matter yield, being the BRS 1074 IPRO more responsive than the BRS-MG 800A. Therefore, Si may induce the formation of root nodules in soybean plants and lead to significant increases in the nitrogen biological fixation and plant growth. These results highlight that Si is not only involved in the improvement of plant growth, but it can be also considered a crucial element to improve the symbiotic performance of soybean plants. However, the physiological basis of how and where silicate exerts its influence on nodulation and nitrogen biological fixation still remains unknown.

RESUMO Os efeitos dos cultivos sucessivos e da adubação potássica em condições de casa de vegetação na contribuição do K não-trocável para a nutrição das plantas em diferentes solos do Estado do Paraná, Brasil, foram investigados neste estudo. Amostras de nove solos coletadas na camada superficial (0-20 cm) foram submetidas à adição ou não de fertilizante potássico e a seis cultivos sucessivos de plantas (soja, milheto, trigo, feijão, soja e milho). Todas as culturas foram cultivadas em vasos de 8 L por 45 dias e, ao final do sexto cultivo foram coletadas amostras de solos para a deteminação do K trocável e K não-trocável. Foram também determinados a produção de matéria seca da parte aérea, a quantidade de K absorvido, e a contribuição do K não-trocável para a nutrição potássica das plantas. Os solos diferenciaram-se na capacidade de suprir K às plantas a curto e médio prazo, devido à ampla variação do material de origem e dos teores de K trocável e K não-trocável. Quando os solos não foram adubados com K, o cultivo sucessivo de plantas resultou em um processo contínuo de esgotamento das formas de K não-trocável e K trocável, sendo menos acentuado nos solos com maior poder tampão de potássio. Os teores de K não-trocável e K trocável aumentaram com a adição de fertilizantes potássicos, indicando a ocorrência de fixação de K pelo solo. A contribuição do K não-trocável para a nutrição das plantas durante os seis cultivos variou de 50 a 73% e de 1 a 18%, respectivamente, sem e com a adição de fertilizante potássico. Estes resultados reportam a importância das formas de K não-trocável para o suprimento deste nutriente para as plantas nos sistemas de produção agrícolas.

ABSTRACT Intense cropping of plants in pots was used to assess the contribution of non-exchangeable K to plant uptake in different soils of Paraná State, Brazil. Surface samples from nine soil types were fertilized or not with K fertilizer and subjected to six successive cropping (i.e., soybean, pearl millet, wheat, common beans, soybean and maize) under greenhouse conditions. The crops were grown in 8-L pots for 45 days, and at the end of the sixth cropping, the soil was sampled to determination non-exchangeable and exchangeable K. Shoot dry matter yield, K taken up, non-exchangeable pool contribution to K nutrition of plants were also determined. Soils differ in the ability to K supply to the plants in the short to medium term, due to the wide range of parent material and exchangeable K and non-exchangeable K pools. When the soils were not fertilized with K, the successive cropping of plants resulted in a continuous process of depletion of non-exchangeable K and exchangeable K pools; however, this depletion was less pronounced in soils with higher potential buffer capacity of K. Concentrations of non-exchangeable K and exchangeable K were increased with the addition of K fertilizers, indicating the occurrence of K fixation in soil. Non-exchangeable K contribution to K nutrition of plants during the six croppings ranged from 50 to 73% and from 1 to 18%, respectively, without and with K fertilizer addition. These data report the importance of non-exchangeable K pools in the supply of this nutrient to plants in agricultural production systems.
