ABSTRACT The aim of our study was to evaluate the dendrometric characteristics of Atlantic Forest trees of 21 years of deployment in the mountain region of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and their influence on topsoil fertility. We evaluated the survival rates, total heights, and diameters at 1.30 m of all trees in the stand. The characterized soil chemical attributes were pH, P, K, Ca, Mg, Al, and organic matter at 0-0.1 m depth. The averages were compared by Student’s test (p<0.05). While Myroxylon peruiferum and Amburana cearensis had lower survival rates than the other species, Plathymenia reticulata had a larger diameter. All tree species showed diameter growth, though it was larger for Dalbergia nigra, Plathymenia reticulata, Schizolobium parahyba, Esenbeckia leiocarpa, and Lecythis Pisonis. All stands showed medium organic matter content, from 3.3 to 4.1%, and low P. The soils under the Dalbergia nigra and Plathymenia reticulata stands are the most acidic and with low Ca, Mg, and K levels. Our study demonstrated differences in growth patterns and that the species influenced the soil chemical characteristics differently.

Resumo Objetivou-se investigar os fatores associados à falta de acesso à informação em saúde bucal entre adultos. Trata-se de um estudo transversal, conduzido entre 831 adultos (35-44 anos). A variável dependente foi o acesso a informações sobre como evitar problemas bucais e as independentes foram reunidas em subgrupos conforme modelo teórico de Alfabetização em saúde. Conduziu-se Regressão Logística Binária com correção pelo efeito de desenho. Observou-se que 37,5% não tiveram acesso a informações sobre problemas bucais. A falta de acesso foi maior entre os adultos que possuíam renda per capita menor, estavam insatisfeitos com os serviços odontológicos utilizados, não utilizavam fio dental, apresentavam o domínio físico da qualidade de vida insatisfatório e que autopercebiam a saúde bucal como regular/ruim/péssima. A chance de não ter recebido informações sobre com evitar problemas bucais entre os insatisfeitos com os serviços odontológicos utilizados foi 3,28 vezes aquela observada entre os satisfeitos com os serviços odontológicos utilizados. Assim, o menor acesso esteve relacionado a condições desfavoráveis entre adultos. Os serviços de saúde devem garantir informações adequadas a seus usuários, a fim de aumentar os níveis de Alfabetização em saúde, maior satisfação e equidade.

Abstract This study sought to investigate factors associated with the lack of access to information on oral health among adults. It is a cross-sectional study, carried out among 831 adults (35-44 years of age). The dependent variable was access to information on how to avoid oral problems, and the independent variables were gathered into subgroups according to the theoretical model for literacy in health. Binary logistic regression was carried out, and results were corrected by the design effect. It was observed that 37.5% had no access to information about dental problems. The lack of access was higher among adults who had lower per capita income, were dissatisfied with the dental services provided, did not use dental floss, had unsatisfactory physical control of the quality of life, and self-perceived their oral health as fair/poor/very poor. The likelihood of not having access to information about dental problems among those dissatisfied with the dental services used was 3.28 times higher than for those satisfied with the dental services used. Thus, decreased access to information was related to unfavorable conditions among adults. Health services should ensure appropriate information to their users in order to increase health literacy levels and improve satisfaction and equity.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a atividade anti-helmíntica in vitro do ácido succínico (AS) isolado do resíduo de sisal sobre nematódeos gastrointestinais de caprinos, utilizando os ensaios de inibição da eclosão de ovos e motilidade larval. Além disso, a citotoxicidade do AS em culturas de células Vero foi investigada empregando-se o teste de MTT (brometo de 3-4,5-dimetiltiazol-2-ilo, brometo de 2,5-difeniltetrazólio). O AS promoveu redução significativa no percentual de eclosão de ovos (P<0,05) em todas as concentrações testadas (60 a 250μg mL-1). As médias (± desvio padrão) da CE50 e CE90 (Concentração efetiva 50% e 90%) sobre ovos foram de 90.3±2.8 e 130±3.5μg mL-1, respectivamente. O AS não apresentou atividade larvicida. O AS foi menos tóxico para as células Vero, com média do percentual de viabilidade celular igual a 85±6.2% na concentração de 130μg mL-1. Os resultados sugerem que o AS tem potencial efeito anti-helmíntico, embora sejam necessários a realização de estudos in vivo para confirmar seu uso terapêutico.

ABSTRACT: This study was conducted to evaluate the in vitro anthelmintic activity of the succinic acid (SA) isolated from sisal waste against gastrointestinal nematodes of goats, using the egg hatching and larvae motility assays. In addition, potential cytotoxicity of SA on Vero cell cultures was investigated by means of MTT (3-4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl, 2,5diphenyltetrazolium bromide) test. The SA induced a significant inhibition of egg hatching (P<0.05) at all concentrations tested (60 to 250µg mL-1), and the concentrations to inhibit 50% (EC50) and 90% (EC90) values (mean ± standard deviation) were 90.3±2.8 and 130.6±3.5µg mL-1, respectively. The SA has not shown larvicidal activity. The SA was less toxic to the Vero cells, with the mean percentage of cell viability equal to 85±6.2% at the concentration of 130µg mL-1. The results suggested that SA has potential anthelmintic effect; although, more research is needed to confirm its activity in vivo.
