RESUMO: A lesma invasora Meghimatium pictum (Stoliczka, 1873) (Stylommathophora: Philomycidae) é originária da Ásia e foi introduzida em países latino-americanos como Argentina e Brasil, onde é considerada uma praga hortícola severa. Esta espécie também se tornou um hospedeiro intermediário do nematoide Angiostrongylus costaricensis Morera & Céspedes, 1971 (Strongylida: Metastrongylidae), que pode causar a infecção angiostrongilíase abdominal em humanos quando ingerido o molusco ou frutas e vegetais contendo o seu muco contaminado com larvas. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo investigar os parâmetros biológicos do ciclo de vida de M. pictum e avaliar sua preferência alimentar para entender o comportamento da espécie e fornecer informações sobre a escolha futura de métodos mais seguros de manejo e controle desta praga. Observamos que 68 e 75% das lesmas agrupadas e isoladas, respectivamente, sobreviveram 26 semanas (180 dias) em condições de laboratório. Além disso, os indivíduos mantidos isolados apresentaram maior massa corporal (2,8 ± 0,6 g), comprimento (3,3 ± 0,8 cm) e largura (0,37 ± 0,3 cm) do que os espécimes agrupados. Também descobrimos que M. pictum tem crescimento indeterminado e ciclo reprodutivo anual. Com relação à preferência alimentar, a alface foi bem aceita pelas lesmas em diferentes estágios de desenvolvimento (recém-nascido, juvenil e adulto). Nosso estudo apresenta a primeira descrição do ciclo de vida de M. pictum. ABSTRACT: The invasive chinese slug Meghimatiumpictum (Stoliczka, 1873) (Stylommathophora: Philomycidae) is originally from Asia, and it has been introduced in Latin American countries like Argentina and Brazil, where it is considered a critical horticultural pest. This species also became an intermediate host for the nematode AngiostrongyluscostaricensisMorera&Cespedes, 1971(Strongylida: Metastrongylidae), which can cause abdominal angiostrongyliasis in humans when ingested molluscs or their mucus containing larvae released on fruit and vegetables. This research aimed to investigate the biological parameters of the life cycle of M. pictum and evaluate its food preference to understand the species’ behavior and provide information on the choice of safer pest management and control methods. ABSTRACT The bacterial canker, caused by Xanthomonas citri pv. viticola, is the most important bacterial disease of grapevines cultivated in tropical areas. The objectives of this study were to select grape hybrids resistant to bacterial canker based on genotypic values and to evaluate the response of seedless grape hybrids to artificial infection with bacterial canker. Two experiments were conducted. The field experiment (Experiment I) was conducted with 569 hybrids, evaluated for symptoms of bacterial canker, in the absence of an experimental design, using a single individual of each genotype. Experiment II was conducted in a greenhouse, where ten seedless grape hybrids were evaluated in terms of incubation period, incidence, severity, and area under the progress curve of bacterial canker disease incidence, in a completely randomized design. The use of the residual maximum likelihood/best unbiased linear prediction methodology allowed the selection of 40 grape hybrids with lower genotypic values for resistance to bacterial canker. Resumo: Este trabalho apresenta os resultados do estudo Eu Quero é Mais! A Vida de Profissionais do Sexo Durante a Pandemia da COVID-19, integrante do programa de investigação comunitária EPIC. O estudo analisou os efeitos da pandemia nas vidas de trabalhadoras sexuais cis, trans e travestis em nove Unidades da Federação e 11 cidades brasileiras ao longo de 2020 e 2021. O artigo tem como foco o componente qualitativo do estudo baseado em entrevistas semiestruturadas realizadas de forma presencial e remota com 43 trabalhadoras sexuais, e seu cotejamento com o componente quantitativo. Os efeitos são analisados em relação com o marco pandêmico brasileiro, considerando as dimensões sociais, econômicas e políticas do vírus da COVID-19. Entre as temáticas chaves da análise, se destacam: casos de adoecimento, práticas localizadas de isolamento social, práticas de prevenção e gerenciamento de cuidado, vacinação individual e estratégias coletivas de vacinação. Compartilhamos também as respostas cotidianas e ativistas traçadas por trabalhadoras sexuais numa agenda política que se contrapõe à lógica individualista, familiarista, doméstica e neoliberal de isolamento, por meio de perspectivas comunitárias de cuidado, o que se desenhou como a única linha de ação em saúde para a categoria durante a pandemia. As ações coletivas reposicionam o trabalho sexual na interface entre a saúde pública e os direitos humanos e tomam como princípio os conhecimentos das ruas, desde os ativismos, e o poder de decisão delas próprias sobre seus corpos.

Abstract: This paper describes the results of the study I Want More! The Lives of Sex Workers During the COVID-19 Pandemic, which is part of the EPIC community research program. The study analyzed the effects of the pandemic on the lives of cis, trans and travesti sex workers in nine Brazilian states and 11 cities throughout 2020 and 2021. This article focuses on the qualitative component of the study, which was based on semi-structured, remote and face-to-face interviews carried out with 43 sex workers, and its comparison with the quantitative component. The effects are analyzed in relation to the Brazilian pandemic framework, considering the social, economic and political dimensions of the COVID-19 virus. Some of the key themes of the analysis are cases of illness, specific social isolation practices, prevention and care management practices, individual vaccination and collective vaccination strategies. We also share the daily and activist responses drawn up by sex workers in a political agenda that opposes the individualistic, familialist, domestic, and neoliberal logic of isolation by adopting community care perspectives, which was the only line of health action for this work category during the pandemic. Collective actions reposition sex work at the interface between public health and human rights and take as their principle the “street knowledge”, from activism, and the workers’ power of decision over their own bodies.

Abstract We aimed to analyze factors associated with neonatal near-miss in Cuiabá, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil by performing a case-control study of live births in a capital city of central-western Brazil from January 2015 to December 2018 that included 931 cases and 1,862 controls. Data were obtained from the Live Births Information System and the Mortality Information System and variables were organized according to the hierarchical model. Association was analyzed by logistic regression with a 5% significance level. Data were expressed as crude and adjusted odds ratio (OR) and respective confidence intervals (95%CI). The following factors were associated with neonatal near miss: mothers with two (OR = 1.63; 95%CI: 1.01-2.63) or three or more previous pregnancies (OR=1.87; 95%CI: 1.09-3.21), without any live children (OR = 2.57; 95%CI: 1.56-4.24 ) or one live child at birth (OR = 1.53; 95%CI: 1.04-2.26), multiple pregnancy (OR = 4.57; 95%CI: 2.95-7.07), fewer than six prenatal consultations (OR = 2.20; 95%CI: 1.77-2.72), whose deliveries took place in public/university hospitals (OR = 2.25; 95%CI: 1.60-3.15) or philanthropic hospitals (OR = 1.62; 95%CI: 1.16-2.26), with non-cephalic presentation (OR = 2.71 95%CI: 1.87-3.94) and uninduced labor (OR = 1.47; 95%CI: 1.18-1.84).

A series of biologically active N-acylamino amides were synthesized from readily available amino acids and common fatty acids from oil seeds, including the pharmacophoric group in the family of herbicides propanil, linuron, and diuron. The esterification followed by N-acylation with long-chain fatty acids was carried out with O-(benzotriazole-1-yl)-N,N,N’,N’-tetramethyluronium tetrafluoroborate (TBTU) as activating agent. The N-acylamino esters were synthesized and isolated in good yields (70-98%), which after the hydrolysis step, provided the N-acylamino acids. Finally, new N-acylamino amides were obtained from the reaction with 3,4-dichloroaniline in the presence of TBTU and N,N-diisopropylethylamine (DIPEA), in yields between 24-83%. Bioassays were conducted against arthropod strawberry pests Chaetosiphon fragaefolii, Duponchelia fovealis, and Drosophila suzukii, without any registered compound for use in strawberry crops in Brazil. The bioassay studies showed promising results, with mortality percentages ranging from 20-80%, and the best relative mortality by N-oleyl glycinamide, suggesting a possible fatty chain-amino acid synergistic bioactivity. Overall, this study provides an efficient and sustainable method for synthesizing biologically active N-acylamino amides from abundant natural sources, with potential applications in the development of ecofriendly agrochemicals. Abstract Anthropogenic interventions have had a compromising effect on environmental health, intensifying the degradation of ecosystems, and the quantity of chemical pollutants released into nature. Therefore, research areas within the scope of environmental assessments and monitoring such as ecotoxicology have contributed to the determination of the toxic potential of contaminants. A small cyprinid known as the zebrafish (Danio rerio), the use of which has exponentially grown, is an alternative vertebrate model for scientific research, mainly in the assessment of environmental risks. The species exhibits several advantages for breeding in a laboratory, in addition to presenting multi-biomarkers of environmental toxicity. Thus, this review aims to present the main characteristics and advantages of working with this species, as well as show studies related to ecotoxicology involving biomarkers of toxicity in zebrafish. ABSTRACT. Although acerola (Malpighia emarginata DC.) is a tropical fruit of high interest due to its high ascorbic acid content and attractive sensory attributes, fruit production is characterized by high genetic variability. Additionally, the use of new biometric tools for acerola breeding is scarce. This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters and the coefficient of repeatability, as well as determine the optimal number of fruits for quality trait analyses in different acerola genotypes, using different approaches. Twenty-three (Experiment I) and thirty-five (Experiment II) genotypes were evaluated in a randomized block design with four replicates and three plants per plot. Twenty fruits per plant were harvested and evaluated for the following quality traits: diameter, mass, skin color (lightness, chroma and hue), firmness, soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA), SS/TA ratio, and ascorbic acid content. The genetic parameters and the coefficient of repeatability were estimated for each experiment using classical and Bayesian methods. Both approaches achieved similar results on estimating variance components, genetic parameters and the coefficient of repeatability. Genetic parameters showed favorable conditions for acerola selection. The coefficient of repeatability was high for all acerola quality traits. O grupo intervenção recebeu o programa interventivo incluindo as estratégias de coping pautadas na Classificação das Intervenções de Enfermagem, com duração de seis semanas consecutivas, um dia por semana. O grupo controle seguiu a rotina da Unidade de Serviço. Para as análises utilizou-se estatística descritiva, teste T de Student com correção de Welch e o teste de Mann-Whitney. A magnitude do efeito da intervenção foi calculada com o índice d de Cohen. Considerou-se valor p ≤0,05%. Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of a program in increasing coping strategies focused on military firefighters’ problems and emotions. Method: randomized, parallel, single-masked clinical trial. The sample consisted of 51 participants in the intervention group and 49 in the control group. The intervention group received the intervention program including coping strategies based on the Nursing Interventions Classification, lasting six consecutive weeks, one day a week. The control group followed the Service Unit routine. Descriptive statistics, Student’s T test with Welch’s correction and the Mann-Whitney test were used for the analyses. The magnitude of the intervention effect was calculated using Cohen’s d index. A p-value of ≤0.05% was considered. Abstract We aimed to analyze factors associated with neonatal near-miss in Cuiabá, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil by performing a case-control study of live births in a capital city of central-western Brazil from January 2015 to December 2018 that included 931 cases and 1,862 controls. Data were obtained from the Live Births Information System and the Mortality Information System and variables were organized according to the hierarchical model. Association was analyzed by logistic regression with a 5% significance level. Data were expressed as crude and adjusted odds ratio (OR) and respective confidence intervals (95%CI). Abstract Objectives To evaluate outcomes of oral food challenge (OFC) test to assess tolerance in infants with non-IgE-mediated cow's milk allergy (CMA) with gastrointestinal manifestations and explore clinical data predictive of these outcomes. Methods Single-center retrospective study including infants (age < 12 months) who were referred for CMA between 2000 and 2018 and underwent OFC on follow-up. A univariate logistic regression test was performed to evaluate variables associated with the outcomes of the follow-up OFC test. Results Eighty-two patients were included, 50% were male. Eighteen patients had a positive OFC test (22%). Most patients had presented with hematochezia (77%). The median age of symptom onset was 30 days. Two-thirds of the patients were on appropriate infant formula (extensively hydrolyzed or amino acid-based formula), exclusively or in association with breastfeeding. The median time on an elimination diet before the OFC test was 8 months (Q1 6 - Q3 11 months). All cases with positive follow-up OFC tests (n= 18) had been exposed to cow's milk-based formula before the first clinical manifestation of CMA. Five out of eight cases with Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES) had positive OFC tests. Exposure to cow's milk-based formula before diagnosis, a history of other food allergies, hematochezia and diarrhea were predictors of a positive OFC test. Conclusions In infants with non-IgE-mediated CMPA with gastrointestinal manifestations, the use of cow's milk-based formula, a history of other food allergies, and hematochezia and diarrhea upon initial presentation were associated factors for the later achievement of tolerance. ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to evaluate the biochemical and physiological quality of peanut cultivar seeds under periods of imbibition and drying. A completely randomized statistical design was adopted, in factorial scheme, with four replications. The three peanut cultivars were: BR1, BRS 151-L7, and IAC 505. The imbibition and drying periods were: 0, 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours. The seeds were imbibition with the aid of germitest paper and distilled water, then dried on a metal screen in a plastic box with silica, according to the periods studied. Physiological variables were evaluated (percentage of germination, normal seedlings, abnormal seedlings in the first count and abnormal seedlings in the final count, accelerated aging, seedling length, electrical conductivity, speed index, and average germination time) and biochemical variables (sugar concentration total, reducing sugars, hydrogen peroxide, total superoxide dismutase proteins, and total proteins). RESUMO Objetivo: Identificar fatores associados à peregrinação anteparto em gestantes de Fortaleza, Ceará, Brasil. Método: Estudo transversal com 300 puérperas de uma maternidade de referência estadual, realizado de março de 2020 a janeiro de 2021. Foi estimada a frequência da peregrinação segundo características socioeconômicas e de assistência pré-natal. Análises com o Teste Qui-Quadrado de Pearson selecionaram variáveis para a regressão de Poisson ajustada. Resultados: A frequência de peregrinação anteparto por mais de um serviço de saúde foi de 34,3%. Não conhecer a maternidade de referência (1,16; IC95% 1,04–1,30) e não residir próximo à maternidade de referência (1,16; IC95%: 1,03–1,31) estiveram associados à ocorrência de peregrinação entre as mulheres. ABSTRACT Objective: To identify factors associated with antepartum pilgrimage in pregnant women in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. Method: A cross-sectional study with 300 postpartum women from a state reference maternity hospital, carried out from March 2020 to January 2021. The frequency of pilgrimage was estimated according to socioeconomic characteristics and prenatal care. Analysis with Pearson’s chi-square test selected variables for adjusted Poisson regression. Results: The frequency of antepartum pilgrimage to more than one health service was 34.3%. Not knowing the reference maternity hospital (1.16; 95%CI: 1.04–1.30) and not living close to the reference maternity hospital (1.16; 95%CI: 1.03–1.31) were associated with the occurrence of pilgrimage among women. Personal characteristics and prenatal care were not associated. Conclusion: There was an association between antepartum pilgrimage and lack of knowledge of the reference maternity hospital and residence far from that maternity hospital, which requires better team communication and the guarantee of easier access to obstetric care services, through effective implementation of regionalization of maternal care. RESUMEN Objetivo: Identificar factores asociados a la peregrinación anteparto en mujeres embarazadas en Fortaleza, Ceará, Brasil. Método: Estudio transversal con 300 puérperas de una maternidad de referencia estatal, realizado de marzo de 2020 a enero de 2021. Se estimó la frecuencia de peregrinación según características socioeconómicas y de atención prenatal. Análisis con Prueba de Chi-Cuadrado de Pearson variables seleccionadas para regresión de Poisson ajustada. Resultados: La frecuencia de peregrinación anteparto a más de un servicio de salud fue del 34,3%. Desconocer la maternidad de referencia (1,16; IC95%: 1,04–1,30) y no vivir cerca de la maternidad de referencia (1,16; IC95%: 1,03–1,31) se asociaron con la ocurrencia de peregrinación entre las mujeres. Las características personales y la atención prenatal no se asociaron. Abstract Background: The optimal amount for initial fluid resuscitation is still controversial in sepsis and the contribution of non-resuscitation fluids in fluid balance is unclear. We aimed to investigate the main components of fluid intake and fluid balance in both survivors and non-survivor patients with septic shock within the first 72 hours. Methods: In this prospective observational study in two intensive care units, we recorded all fluids administered intravenously, orally, or enterally, and losses during specific time intervals from vasopressor initiation: T1 (up to 24 hours), T2 (24 to 48 hours) and T3 (48 to 72 hours). Logistic regression and a mathematical model assessed the association with mortality and the influence of severity of illness. Results: We included 139 patients. The main components of fluid intake varied across different time intervals, with resuscitation and non-resuscitation fluids such as antimicrobials and maintenance fluids being significant contributors in T1 and nutritional therapy in T2/T3. A positive fluid balance both in T1 and T2 was associated with mortality (p = 0.049; p = 0.003), while nutritional support in T2 was associated with lower mortality (p = 0.040). The association with mortality was not explained by severity of illness scores. Conclusions: Non-resuscitation fluids are major contributors to a positive fluid balance within the first 48 hours of resuscitation. A positive fluid balance in the first 24 and 48 hours seems to independently increase the risk of death, while higher amount of nutrition seems protective. This data might inform fluid stewardship strategies aiming to improve outcomes and minimize complications in sepsis. ABSTRACT Arboviruses transmitted by Aedes aegypti, such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya, pose significant public health threats. The biological agent Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) has been explored as an effective, safe, and economically sustainable method to reduce mosquito populations. This study aimed to identify Bt strains with potent larvicidal activity against Ae. aegypti, contributing to the development of effective bioinsecticides. We evaluated 13 Bt strains from the Embrapa Maize and Sorghum collection against Ae. aegypti larvae. Five replicates of each strain were prepared in 200 mL containers, each containing 18 mL of autoclaved distilled water, 2 mL of bacterial suspension (108 spores/mL), and 20 third-instar Ae. aegypti larvae. Mortality rates were monitored by counting live and dead larvae at 1, 24, 48 and 72 hours. PCR characterization was used to identify genes associated with toxicity for lepidopteran and dipteran pests in three strains. The bioassays confirmed the toxicity of the larvae, with strains 1644 and 1608A causing 100% and 95% mortality, respectively, within 24 hours. Strain 1656 showed 85% mortality up to 72 hours. Larvae exposed to Bt suspensions of strains 1644, 1608A, and 1656 lost agility, their tegument lost their shine, and the color became opaque and eventually darkened after death. Characterization of strain 1656 revealed the presence of cry and vip genes, which are associated with toxic activity in dipterans.
