SUMMARY: Exercise and anabolic steroids are expected to promote improvements in cardiovascular structure and reduction of visceral fat and, thus, help promote health in hyperglycemic patients. The aim of this study was to verify the influence of aerobic exercise associated with the use of steroids on cardiac structure and visceral fat in hyperglycemic Wistar rats. Methods: Thirty-two young male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control group (n=8), control with treatment (n=8), diabetic (n=8) and diabetic with treatment (n=8). All animals were subjected to intense aerobic exercise and the animals undergoing treatment received intramuscular testosterone. Body weight, visceral fat and cardiac measurements (weight, length and width) were evaluated. The groups treated with testosterone showed a smaller than expected increase in body weight for food intake. Visceral, perirenal, retroperitoneal and epididymal fats were lower in the treated groups. Heart weight was relatively greater in the treated groups and greater width and length in the untreated groups. The proposed association of testosterone administration with aerobic exercise can provide significant benefits for the metabolism of hyperglycemic individuals.

Abstract Aging has a direct impact on balance due to changes in sensory and motor response, sarcopenia, reduced muscle strength and range of motion that occur in the elderly. In this context, strength training (ST) programs are seen as a valuable strategy to minimize the deleterious effect of aging on strength production and balance in this population. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of 12 weeks of progressive intensity ST on static balance variables in the elderly. The study included 23 elderly with an average age of 65±8.61 years, of both sexes, who performed a twelve-week strength training program, with a frequency of three times a week and with progressive intensity (60 - 85% of 1-RM). Balance was assessed before and after the intervention period, through stabilometric assessment on a force plate. After the intervention, there was a reduction in the anteroposterior amplitude (p=0.01), in the anteroposterior velocity (p=0.01) and in the total displaced area (p=0.04). It is concluded that the strength training can be used as a key tool to minimize the deleterious effect of aging on the maintenance of static balance. response sarcopenia context (ST population 1 2 65861 65 8 61 65±8.6 years sexes twelveweek twelve program 60 (6 85 1RM. 1RM RM . 1-RM) period plate p=0.01, p001 p p=0.01 , 0 01 (p=0.01 p=0.04. p004 p=0.04 04 (p=0.04) 6586 6 65±8. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The Positive Aspects of Caregiving (PAC) scale is used to assess psychosocial benefits provided to caregivers by the task of caring. The PAC scale consists of nine items, assessed using a five-point Likert scale, with higher values indicating greater positive perceptions and gains from the caregiving experience. OBJECTIVE: To translate and culturally adapt the PAC scale for informal Brazilian caregivers of people with dementia. DESIGN AND SETTING: A methodological study was conducted at the Federal University of São Carlos. METHODS: The following stages were carried out: Translation; Synthesis of the translations; Back-translation; Evaluation by an experts’ committee; and Pre-test. RESULTS: Two independent professionals translated the PAC scale. The consensus version was obtained by merging both translations, which were back-translated into English by a third translator. The expert committee comprised three specialists in the area and project researchers. All scale items presented a Content Validity Index of 1 (CVI = 1.0), and thus remained in the pre-final version of the instrument. The instrument was pre-tested with seven caregivers of people with dementia, the majority of whom were women (57.1%), with a degree of kinship corresponding to sons/daughters (57.1%) and an average age of 55.2 (± 4.1) years. The caregivers considered it clear and understandable and made no suggestions for changes. CONCLUSION: The PAC scale was translated and culturally adapted for use by informal caregivers of people with dementia in Brazil. However, a psychometric analysis of the instrument is necessary to provide normative data for this population group.
ABSTRACT The sense of mastery is conceptualized as a positive aspect of care targeted at people living with dementia, a coping mechanism to reduce burden, and may represent a protective factor for caregivers’ mental and physical health. Objective: To translate and culturally adapt the Pearlin Mastery Scale for Brazil. Methods: A methodological study was conducted at the Federal University of São Carlos in which the initial translation stages were followed; synthesis; back-translation; review by the committee of judges by analyzing the Content Validity Index (CVI); and test of the pre-final version. Results: Two specialists translated the scale into Brazilian Portuguese and defined a consensus version with the researchers. Subsequently, another two specialists back-translated the consensus version, which was reviewed by three judges who are PhDs in the area, considering all scale items as very equivalent (CVI=1.0), and maintaining them in the pre-final version of the instrument. This was tested in a first group of caregivers for them to point out adjustments. The suggestions were accepted by modifying three items and, afterward, the scale was tested in a second group, which did not present difficulties answering the instrument. Conclusion: The Pearlin Mastery Scale was translated and culturally adapted for Brazil, showing equivalence. However, future psychometric analyses of the instrument are required to make it available for use in this population. dementia burden health Objective Brazil Methods followed synthesis backtranslation back back-translation CVI (CVI) prefinal pre final Results researchers Subsequently backtranslated area CVI=1.0, CVI10 CVI=1.0 , 1 0 (CVI=1.0) adjustments afterward Conclusion equivalence However population (CVI CVI1 CVI=1. Abstract Sjogren’s disease (SjD) is an autoimmune disease that is characterized not only by the sicca symptoms it causes but also by its systemic nature, which is capable of several and not yet fully understood extraglandular manifestations. To gain a clearer understanding of these manifestations as well as a better practical approach, a panel of experts from the Brazilian Society of Rheumatology conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the identification of epidemiologic and clinical features of the extraglandular manifestations present in ESSDAI (EULAR Sjogren´s syndrome disease activity index), followed by a voting panel with recommendations for clinical practice. This publication is complementary to others already published and covers cutaneous and hematological manifestations, with prevalence data generated by a meta-analysis of 13 clinical or laboratory manifestations and 6 clinical management recommendations. ABSTRACT Objective Currently programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) inhibitors in combination with other therapies are being evaluated to determine their efficacy in cancer treatment. However, the effect of PD-ligand (L) 1 expression on disease outcomes in stage III (EC III) non-small cell lung cancer is not completely understood. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the influence of PD-L1 expression on the outcomes of EC III non-small cell lung cancer. Methods This study was conducted on patients diagnosed with EC III non-small cell lung cancer who underwent treatment at a tertiary care hospital. PD-L1 expression was determined using immunohistochemical staining, all patients expressed PD-L1. Survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Relationships between variables were assessed using Cox proportional regression models. Results A total of 49 patients (median age=69 years) with EC III non-small cell lung cancer and PD-L1 expression were evaluated. More than half of the patients were men, and most were regular smokers. The patients were treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, surgery, or sequential or combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The median progression-free survival of the entire cohort was 14.2 months, and the median overall survival was 20 months. There was no significant association between PD-L1 expression and disease progression, clinical characteristics, or overall survival. Conclusions PD-L1 expression was not correlated with EC III non-small cell lung cancer outcomes. Whether these findings differ from the association with immune checkpoint inhibitors remains to be addressed in future studies.
Abstract Objective To relate sociodemographic, economic and clinical variables and having or not having a caregiver, risk for falls and perception of the risk for falls with the functional capacity of older adults in an Emergency Department. Methods Analytical cross-sectional study of 197 older adults conducted in the Emergency Department between September 2019 and March 2020. A questionnaire with sociodemographic, economic and clinical information was applied, as well as the instruments: Falls Risk Awareness Questionnaire, Morse Falls Scale, Katz Index and Lawton Scale. The Kruskal Wallis test was used to compare the Katz Index and the Lawton Scale, and the Spearman correlation coefficient was used to associate the Morse Falls Scale with continuous variables. The Mann-Whitney test and the Kruskal Wallis test were used to associate the Falls Risk Awareness Questionnaire with the categorical variables. Results Illiterate patients (p<0.0001) with lower income (p=0.0446) had a lower score on the Katz Index, that is, they presented a higher percentage of totally dependent people. Divorced older adults (p=0.0004) without a caregiver (p<0.0001) had a higher score on the Lawton Scale, that is, a greater degree of independence. The greater perception of risk for falls (p=0.0403) was associated with less independence for instrumental activities of daily living. The low risk for falls (p<0.0001) was associated with greater independence for instrumental activities of daily living. There was no association between perceived risk for falls (p=0.2693) and risk for falls (p=0.4984) with the Katz Index. Conclusion Lower education and income were associated with dependence for activities of daily living. Being divorced and not having a caregiver were associated with independence in instrumental activities of daily living. There was no association between the perception of risk for falls and the risk for falls with activities of daily living. The greater perception of risk for falls was associated with less independence, and the low risk for falls was associated with greater independence for instrumental activities of daily living. sociodemographic crosssectional cross sectional 19 201 2020 applied instruments MannWhitney Mann Whitney p<0.0001 p00001 p 0 0001 (p<0.0001 p=0.0446 p00446 0446 (p=0.0446 is people p=0.0004 p00004 0004 (p=0.0004 p=0.0403 p00403 0403 (p=0.0403 living p=0.2693 p02693 2693 (p=0.2693 p=0.4984 p04984 4984 (p=0.4984 1 20 202 p<0.000 p0000 000 (p<0.000 p=0.044 p0044 044 (p=0.044 p=0.000 (p=0.000 p=0.040 p0040 040 (p=0.040 p=0.269 p0269 269 (p=0.269 p=0.498 p0498 498 (p=0.498 2 p<0.00 p000 00 (p<0.00 p=0.04 p004 04 (p=0.04 p=0.00 (p=0.00 p=0.26 p026 26 (p=0.26 p=0.49 p049 49 (p=0.49 p<0.0 p00 (p<0.0 p=0.0 (p=0.0 p=0.2 p02 (p=0.2 p=0.4 p04 4 (p=0.4 p<0. p0 (p<0. p=0. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Vaccination hesitation spans from historical diseases such as smallpox to the current challenges with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). In Brazil, vaccination faces obstacles related to trust and convenience. Despite the National Immunization Program, fear of adverse effects as well as misinformation challenge confidence in vaccines, and anti-vaccine movements have gained momentum. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated childhood vaccine refusal, including COVID-19 vaccines, by comparing the reasons for and sociodemographic differences between vaccinated individuals and those who hesitated or refused immunization. DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional study was conducted in São Paulo, Brazil, using questionnaires administered during pediatric consultations between January and April 2023. METHODS: This study investigated vaccine hesitancy and the attitudes of parents and caregivers of children (0–12 years) towards vaccines. The questionnaire was administered during routine pediatric consultations at three different locations, each with 50 participants for a total of 150 participants, to avoid selection bias. RESULTS: Marked differences were evident among caregivers in terms of sex, race, income, education, and religion, which influenced their attitudes toward vaccination. There was an increase in the refusal of seasonal vaccinations and a significant distrust of the efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine (52%), with concerns about its side effects. Although most patients did not stop vaccination, significant delays occurred, especially in the clinical setting (58%). CONCLUSIONS: This study emphasizes the importance of childhood health decisions, indicating the need to build trust in vaccines, tailor health policies, and investigate the causes of distrust to promote childhood immunizations.
