ABSTRACT: Okra is a vegetable that stands out for its low production cost, high yield, high nutritional and value and socioeconomic importance in income generation, especially in family farming. In this context, the present study evaluated the physiology, production and water use efficiency of okra under irrigation with saline water and exogenous application of hydrogen peroxide. The treatments were distributed in a randomized block design, in a 5 × 3 factorial arrangement, with five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water - ECw (0.3; 1.3; 2.3; 3.3 and 4.3 dS m-1) and three concentrations of hydrogen peroxide - H2O2 (0, 25 and 50 μM), with five replicates, totaling 75 plants. Irrigation with ECw above 0.3 dS m-1 negatively affected stomatal conductance, transpiration, number of fruits, total production and water use efficiency of okra cv. Clemson Americano 80. Hydrogen peroxide at concentration of 22 μM mitigated the effects of salt stress on CO2 assimilation rate, number of fruits, average fruit weight and total production of okra cv. Clemson Americano 80. Water use efficiency is favored by H2O2 application at concentration of 12 μM, especially in plants irrigated with ECw of 0.3 dS m-1.

RESUMO: O quiabeiro é uma hortaliça que se destaca pelo baixo custo de produção, elevada produtividade, alto valor nutricional e pela importância socioeconômica na geração de renda, principalmente na agricultura familiar. Nesse contexto, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a fisiologia, a produção e a eficiência no uso da água de quiabeiro sob irrigação com águas salinas e aplicação exógena de peróxido de hidrogênio. Os tratamentos foram distribuídos no delineamento de blocos casualizados, em arranjo fatorial 5 × 3, sendo cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação (0,3; 1,3; 2,3; 3,3 e 4,3 dS m-1) e três concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio (0, 25 e 50 μM), com cinco repetições, totalizando 75 plantas. A irrigação com CEa acima de 0,3 dS m-1 afetou negativamente a condutância estomática, a transpiração, o número de frutos, a produção total e a eficiência no uso da água do quiabeiro cv. Clemson Americano 80. O peróxido de hidrogênio na concentração de 22 μM amenizou os efeitos do estresse salino sobre a taxa de assimilação de CO2, número de frutos, peso médio de frutos e produção total de quiabeiro cv. ABSTRACT Cenostigma pyramidale is an endemic species of Brazil, widely spread in the Caatinga biome. The conditions in the semi-arid Northeastern region of Brazil can affect the development of plants due to the irregularity of rainfall, limiting the availability of water and reducing the germination and initial growth of native species. Therefore, seed priming with salicylic acid may mitigate the effects of water stress on plants. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of seed osmopriming with salicylic acid as a water deficit attenuator on germination and initial growth of C. pyramidale seedlings. A completely randomized design in a 5 × 5 factorial scheme, corresponding to five osmotic potentials (Ψs - 0, -0.3, -0.6, -0.9 and -1.2 MPa) and five doses of salicylic acid (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mM), with four repetitions of 25 seeds, was used. Germination and initial growth of C. pyramidale were compromised by water deficit. Osmopriming of seeds with salicylic acid at a dose of 0.63 mM is an efficient strategy to reduce the effect of water deficit in the germination stage from the potential of -0.2 MPa. The vigor of C. pyramidale seeds increased under deficit conditions with the application of salicylic acid, with the concentration varying from 0.5 to 1.0 mM. As condições do Semiárido nordestino podem afetar o desenvolvimento vegetal devido a irregularidade das chuvas, limitando a disponibilidade hídrica, podendo reduzir a germinação e o crescimento inicial das espécies. Dessa forma, o uso de estratégias como o condicionamento de sementes com ácido salicílico pode ser uma estratégia para atenuar o efeito do déficit hídrico nas plantas. ABSTRACT The use of substances that can mitigate the harmful effects of salt stress is a promising alternative for the use of saline water, especially in semi-arid regions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide in mitigating salt stress in the mini watermelon grown in a hydroponic system. The study was carried out in a greenhouse, in an area belonging to the Federal University of Campina Grande, Pombal, Paraíba. The experimental design was completely randomised using a split-plot factorial scheme with four levels of electrical conductivity for the nutrient solution-ECns (2.1, 3.1, 4.1, and 5.1 dS m-1) considered the plots, and four concentrations of hydrogen peroxide-H2O2 (0, 20, 40, and 60 μM) the subplots, with five replications. Abstract Foliar application of hydrogen peroxide can induce plant defense mechanisms against salt stress, favoring plant acclimation in regions with qualitative and quantitative scarcity of water resources, such as the Brazilian semi-arid region. From this perspective, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of foliar hydrogen peroxide application on chlorophyll a fluorescence, growth, and production of okra under irrigation with saline water. The experiment was conducted under field conditions in Pombal, PB, using a randomized block design with a 5 × 3 factorial arrangement corresponding to five electrical conductivity levels of water - ECw (0.3, 1.3, 2.3, 3.3, and 4.3 dS m-1) and three hydrogen peroxide concentrations - H2O2 (0, 25, and 50 μM), with five replications. ABSTRACT This study was conducted with the objective of evaluating the quantum yield, photosynthetic pigments and biomass accumulation of mini watermelon cv. Sugar Baby, under strategies of irrigation with saline water and potassium fertilization. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, in a 8 × 3 factorial scheme, with three replicates, corresponding to eight strategies of irrigation with saline water applied at different phenological stages of the crop (control - irrigation with low-salinity water throughout the crop cycle, and salt stress in the vegetative, vegetative/flowering, flowering, flowering/fruiting, fruiting, fruiting/ fruit maturation and fruit maturation stage) and three potassium doses (50, 100 and 150% of the recommendation). The dose of 100% corresponded to 150 mg of K2O kg-1 of soil. Two levels of electrical conductivity of water were used: 0.8 and 4.0 dS m-1. Irrigation with water of 4.0 dS m-1 continuously in the vegetative and flowering stages increased the initial fluorescence and decreased the quantum efficiency of photosystem II of mini watermelon fertilized with 100 and 150% of K recommendation. Fertilization with 50% recommendation did not interfere in the fluorescence parameters of the mini watermelon, regardless of the irrigation management strategy. Chlorophyll a synthesis is inhibited by salt stress in the vegetative/flowering, flowering, flowering/fruiting, fruiting/maturation stages, as well as for total chlorophyll, except for the flowering stage. RESUMO Desenvolveu-se este trabalho com o objetivo de avaliar o rendimento quântico, os pigmentos fotossintéticos e o acúmulo de fitomassas da mini-melancia cv. Sugar Baby, sob estratégias de irrigação com águas salinas e adubação potássica. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 8 × 3, com três repetições, sendo oito estratégias de irrigação com águas salinas aplicadas em diferentes estádios fenológicos da cultura (controle - irrigação com água de baixa salinidade durante todo o ciclo da cultura, e estresse salino na fase vegetativa, vegetativa/floração, floração, floração/frutificação, frutificação, frutificação/maturação e maturação dos frutos) e três doses de potássio (50, 100 e 150% da recomendação). A dose de 100% correspondeu a 150 mg de K2O kg-1 de solo. Foram utilizados dois níveis de condutividade elétrica da água: 0,8 e 4,0 dS m-1. High population growth during the last decades and reduced water resources, both in quantity and quality, have made necessary the use of saline water in agricultural activities. This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of irrigation with water of varying salinity in different phenological phases associated with nitrogen fertilization on the physiology, growth and yield of castor bean cv. BRS Energia. Research was carried out in lysimeters under field conditions in Pombal-PB, Brazil, from September 2011 to January 2012. A completely randomized block design arranged in a 5x2x2 factorial design was adopted, with three replications, testing five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (ECw = 0.3, 1.2, 2.1, 3.0 and 3.9 dS m-1), two strategies of management of water salinity: 1) irrigation with low salinity water during the vegetative stage and application of different salinity levels in the reproductive phase and 2) irrigation with different ECw levels throughout the crop cycle, and two nitrogen doses (100 and 160 mg N kg-1 soil). Leaf (DML) and stem (DMS) dry matter and the number of fruits (NFruPC) and seeds (NSeePC) of the primary cluster were evaluated. Irrigation with ECw exceeding 0.3 dS m-1 affected DML and DMS negatively. The greatest accumulation of dry matter was observed in plants which were not irrigated with saline water in the initial development phase. Irrigation with saline water caused changes in gas exchange of the castor bean plant, with varying effects according to the management strategy adopted. The nitrogen dose of 160 mg N kg-1 soil increased DMS. Different ECw levels negatively affected production, regardless of the development stage. No significant interaction effect was observed among the factors studied and the variables evaluated.

El alto crecimiento de la población durante las últimas décadas y la disminución de los recursos hídricos, tanto en cantidad como en calidad, han hecho el uso necesario de agua salina en las actividades agrícolas. Esta investigación se realizó para evaluar la influencia del riego con agua salina en las diferentes fases fenológicas en ricino cv. Energía BRS. La investigación se realizó bajo las condiciones de campo en Pombal-PB, Brasil, desde septiembre de 2011 a enero de 2012. El diseño experimental fue de bloques completos al azar, dispuestos en un diseño factorial 5x2x2 y fue adoptada con tres repeticiones. Se consideraron cinco niveles de conductividad eléctrica del agua de riego (ECw = 0,3; 1,2 ; 2,1; 3,0 y 3,9 dS m-1); dos estrategias de gestión de la salinidad del agua (riego con agua de baja salinidad durante la etapa vegetativa y la aplicación de diferentes niveles de salinidad en la fase reproductiva y riego con diferentes niveles de ECw en todo el ciclo de cultivo) y dos dosis de nitrógeno (100 y 160 mg de N kg-1 suelo). Se evaluó materia seca de hojas (DML) y el tallo (DMS); número de frutos (NFruPC) y número de semillas (NSeePC) del racimo principal. El riego con ECw superior a 0,3 dS m-1 afectó negativamente a DML y DMS. La mayor acumulación de materia seca se observó en las plantas que no fueron irrigados con aguas salinas en la fase inicial de desarrollo. El suministro de nitrógeno en dosis de 160 mg N kg -1 suelo aumentó el DMS. No se observó efecto interactivo significativo entre los factores y las variables estudiadas.
