Abstract Objective: To report the experience of creating and providing a self-instructional course about oral cancer, in a Telehealth platform, to Community Health Workers, and to analyze the participants’ clinic and demographic profile. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study of development and implementing experience of a course carried on a virtual learning environment, based on ADDIE, an Instructional Design model. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was applied, with 95% confidence level for quantitative variables. Results: The initial stage consisted of constructing the online course. In the second stage, the course was provided in a virtual learning environment. The course "Abre a boca, meu povo! - O que você precisa saber sobre o câncer de boca” was provided to the target audience with a student’s guide, initial survey, four modules with video lessons, initial and final knowledge test, satisfaction evaluation and certificate. Simplicity, clarity and objectivity have been prioritised in the transmission of knowledge. The final sample comprised 205 Community Health Workers. The predominant profile consisted of professionals aged between 40 and 49 years, female, with more than 10 years of career. Conclusions: The course achieved its objectives, revealing a satisfactory number of professionals in its first edition.

Abstract Studies on informed patient consent in the field of dentistry are scarce and present divergences, highlighting the need to deepen knowledge about definitions, dynamics, normative acts, case law and limits of responsibility in the face of diverse factors and risks inherent to the profession. From a bibliographic review that included studies indexed in the SciELO and LILACS databases, as well as textbooks, this study aimed to define what is meant by a patient’s free and informed consent, distinguish different types and highlight the so-called “informed choice,” considering that the activity of the dental surgeon is classified as a service and is regulated by the 1988 Federal Constitution of Brazil, the Consumer Defense Code, the Civil Code and special laws. Resumo As interleucinas 6 e 17 atuam na reabsorção óssea na presença de infecções de oriegem endodôntica para defesa do hospedeiro. Polimorfismos genéticos podem estar associados ao aumento da perda óssea, representada por áreas de lesões periapicais grandes. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a frequência do polimorfismo dos genes interleucina 6 e 17 em pacientes com periodontite apical assintomática ou abscesso apical crônico e verificar a existência de correlações entre área de lesão periapical com idade, sexo e presença do polimorfismo, na população estudada, no estado de Pernambuco. Foi incluída uma população constituída por trinta indivíduos diagnosticados. A áreas da lesões foram medidas em mm². O DNA genômico foi extraído e a genotipagem realizada por Polimorfismo de Comprimento de Fragmento de Restrição de Reação em Cadeia da Polimerase para interleucina 6 (rs 1800795) e interleucina 17 (rs 2275913). Os testes exato de Fisher, qui-quadrado e odds ratio foram utilizados. Uma análise de regressão logística também foi realizada usando sexo, idade e presença de polimorfismo como covariável, além de regressão linear para testar a relação da idade e área da lesão. Todos os testes utilizaram um nível de significância de 0,05% (p ≤0.05%). Não houve significância estatística na ocorrência das áreas grandes de lesões periapicais correlacionadas com idade, sexo e diagnóstico nem nas distribuições de alelos no polimorfismo das interleucinas 6 e 17 nos grupos estudados. Abstract Interleukins 6 and 17 act in bone resorption in the presence of infections of endodontic origin for host defense. Genetic polymorphisms may be associated with increased bone loss, represented by areas of large periapical lesions. This study aimed to verify the frequency of interleukin 6 and 17 gene polymorphism in patients with asymptomatic apical periodontitis or chronic apical abscess and to verify the existence of correlations between periapical lesion area with age, gender, and presence of the polymorphism, in the studied population, in the state of Pernambuco. A population consisting of thirty diagnosed individuals was included. The area of the lesions was measured in mm². Genomic DNA was extracted and genotyping was performed by Polymerase Chain Reaction Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism for interleukin 6 (rs 1800795) and interleukin 17 (rs 2275913). Fisher's exact, chi-square, and odds ratio tests were used. A logistic regression analysis was also performed using sex, age, and the presence of polymorphism as covariates, in addition to linear regression to test the relationship between age and lesion area. All tests used a significance level of 0.05% (p ≤0.05%). There was no statistical significance in the occurrence of large areas of periapical lesions correlated with age, sex, and diagnosis, nor in the distribution of alleles in the polymorphism of interleukins 6 and 17 in the studied groups. The frequency of homozygous and heterozygous polymorphism was high. Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of oral and maxillofacial lesions among children from representative regions of Brazil. A retrospective descriptive study was conducted. Biopsy records comprising the period from 2000 to 2015 were obtained from the archives of three Brazilian oral pathology referral centers. A total of 32,506 biopsy specimens were analyzed, and specimens from 1,706 children aged 0–12 years were selected. Gender, age, anatomical location and histopathological diagnosis were evaluated. Descriptive statistics was carried out. Likelihood ratio tests were used to evaluate the association between the categorical variables. The level of significance was set at 0.05. The post-hoc test was used to identify the subgroups that significantly differed from one another, and the Bonferroni correction was applied. A total of 1,706 oral and maxillofacial lesions were diagnosed in pediatric patients, including 51.9% girls. Oral mucocele was the most prevalent reactive/inflammatory lesion (64%). The most commonly affected sites were the lips (34.5%) and mandible (19.9%). A significant association was observed between age and the group of lesions of the oral cavity (p < 0.001), and between age and anatomical location (p < 0.001). Pediatric oral and maxillofacial lesions were frequent and showed wide diversity, with the prevalence of mucocele. Knowledge of oral lesions is important for pediatric dentists worldwide, since it provides accurate data for the diagnosis and oral health of children.

Introdução: Pacientes com deformidades dento-faciais podem ser beneficiados pela cirurgia ortognática na maxila. A técnica cirúrgica da osteotomia da maxila inclui também procedimentos realizados na parte óssea e cartilaginosa e tecidos moles do nariz o que pode provocar mudanças na forma. Objetivo: Este trabalho teve como proposta avaliar as mudanças anatômicas da região nasal, de correntes de cirurgias maxilares pela osteotomia Le Fort I para avanço e/ou impacção. Método: Trata-se de um estudo clínico prospectivo. Foram incluídos 21 pacientes, submetidos à cirurgia e avaliados antes e 6 meses após o ato cirúrgico em relação aos movimentos da pontanasal e modificações da base do nariz. Resultados: Os resultados mostraram mudanças da ponta nasal para cima em 85% dos casos, para anterior em 80%, rotação em 80% e alargamento da base nasal em 95%, promovendo melhorias estéticas. Conclusão: Cirurgias de avanço e reposicionamento superior da maxila tendem a causa relevação e avanço da ponta do nariz, assim como, um alargamento da base nasal.

Introduction: Patients with dentofacial deformities may benefit from orthognathic surgery in the maxilla. Maxillary osteotomy may include procedures in the bone, cartilaginous, and soft tissues of the nose, leading to shape alterations. Objective: To evaluate the anatomic alterations of the nasal region in patients undergoing a Le Fort I osteotomy for advancement or superior impaction. Methods: This is a clinical prospective study. Twenty-one patients were evaluated during the preand postoperative periods. The positioning of the nasal tip and the modification of the nasal base were evaluated. Results: The results showed that the nasal tip was superiorly positioned in 85% of the cases, advanced in 80%, rotated in 80%, and there was a wide nasal base in 95%, resulting in esthetic improvement. Conclusions: Surgeries of maxillary advancement and superior reposition tend to cause elevation and advancement of the nasal tip, as well as enlargement of the nasal base.

Tooth calcification begins during the intrauterine life and is related to the nutritional status of fetus. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dental calcification status of 15 low-weight human fetuses aged from the 14th to 28th weeks of intrauterine life through radiographic analyses and von Kossa histochemical technique, which is specific to the detection of calcium and other mineral salts in tissues. After dissection of jaws, the mandibles were submitted to lateral and occlusal radiographies. Three mm thick slide sections of jaws samples were stained by conventional and von Kossa methods. As results, radiographic analysis did not exhibit any suggestive image of tooth mineralization, although rudiments of mandibular ossification could be noted. Hematoxilin and eosin sections revealed tooth germs in advanced phases of odontogenesis, but relative delay in tooth development was observed. The von Kossa staining did not show any positivity to the deposition of mineral salts in tooth germs from maxilla and mandible, supporting our findings related to the delay of dental development that was found in studied sample. Hence, we suggest that there is relation between the fetal low-weight and the calcification and maturation status of teeth.

La calcificación del diente comienza durante la vida intrauterina y se relaciona con el estado nutricional del feto. El propósito de este estudio fue evaluar el estado de calcificación dental de 15 fetos humanos de bajo peso entre las 14 y 28 semanas de vida intrauterina mediante análisis radiográficos y técnica histoquímica von Kossa, específica para la detección de calcio y otras sales minerales en los tejidos. Después de su disección, las mandíbulas fueron sometidas a radiografías laterales y oclusales. Secciones de 3 mm de espesor de las mandibulas fueron teñidas con la técnica Von Kossa. El análisis radiográfico no mostró ninguna imagen sugerente de mineralización dentaria, aunque rudimentos de la osificación mandibular podrían tenerse en cuenta. Las secciones de H-E revelaron la presencia de los gérmenes dentarios en las fases avanzadas de odontogénesis, pero con un retraso relativo en el desarrollo normal. La tinción de von Kossa no mostró positividad a la deposición de sales minerales en gérmenes dentarios, lo que apoya nuestros hallazgos relacionados con el retraso de desarrollo dental que se encontró en la muestra estudiada. Se sugiere que existe relación entre el bajo peso del feto y el estado de calcificación y maduración de los dientes.

OBJETIVO: avaliar métodos de digitalização indireta de radiografias cefalométricas em comparação ao método digital direto. MÉTODOS: a amostra foi composta de dez radiografias cefalométricas adquiridas pelo Orthopantomograph OP100/Orthocef OC100 (GE - Instrumentarium), digital direto. As imagens foram inseridas no programa Adobe Photoshop® e cinco pontos cefalométricos foram marcados. Procedeu-se a impressão em transparência e foi feita a digitalização indireta das imagens impressas, por meio das câmeras fotográficas digitais Sony® DSC-W5 e Canon® Rebel XT/EOS 350D, fixas em estativa, nas distâncias de 25cm e 60cm e com o scanner Scan Jet 4C Hewlett Packard®. As imagens diretas e indiretas foram inseridas e calibradas no software Radiocef Studio (Radiomemory®, Brasil), marcando-se o centro dos pontos previamente assinalados. A análise cefalométrica computadorizada gerou três grandezas angulares e quatro lineares, as quais foram submetidas a tratamento estatístico. RESULTADOS: as imagens do scanner Scan Jet 4C HP® demonstraram pequenas alterações significativas, porém, sem relevância clínica. Quando da digitalização a 60cm da radiografia, as duas câmeras causaram distorções que foram significativas mas clinicamente aceitáveis; e, a 25cm, causaram as maiores distorções, com importância clínica, na Canon® Rebel XT. CONCLUSÃO: o scanner Scan Jet 4C HP® com leitor de transparências foi o melhor método e as câmeras operando a 60cm mostraram-se adequadas para digitalização de radiografias. As câmeras na distância de 25cm causaram distorções na imagem que alteraram as medidas lineares, podendo a Canon® Rebel XT comprometer o diagnóstico ortodôntico.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the indirect digitization method of cephalometric radiographs in comparison with the direct digital method. METHODS: The sample was composed of ten cephalometric radiographs acquired by Orthopantomograph OP100/Orthocef OC100 (GE - Instrumentarium), digital direct. In the Adobe™ Photoshop program, five cephalometric landmarks were set in the images and the impression in transparencies was made. The indirect digitization of the images was performed through the Sony™ DSC-W5 and Canon™ Rebel XT/EOS 350D digital photographic cameras-fixed in a copy stand, at the distances of 25 cm and 60 cm-and through the Hewlett Packard™ Scan Jet 4C scanner. The direct digital images and the indirect ones were inserted and gauged in the Radiocef Studio (Radiomemory™, Brazil) software and the center of the previously marked landmarks was set. The cephalometric computerized analysis generated three angular measurements and four linear ones which were submitted to statistical analysis. RESULTS: The images from the scanner demonstrated small statistically significant alterations, without clinical significance. When digitizing the radiographs at 60 cm, both cameras caused distortions which were statistically significant, but clinically acceptable. At 25 cm, the cameras caused the largest distortions, being more expressive and with clinical significance in the images of Canon™ Rebel XT. CONCLUSIONS: The Hewlett Packard™ Scan Jet 4C scanner with transparency reader and the Sony™ DSC-W5 and Canon™ Rebel XT/EOS cameras operating at 60 cm were shown appropriate for the digitization of cephalometric radiographs. In 25 cm, the digital cameras caused distortions in the image which altered the linear measurements with possibilities of jeopardizing the orthodontic diagnosis.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar a qualidade da imagem radiográfica quanto ao tempo de leitura em negatoscópio com interrupção da etapa fixação. METODOLOGIA: Foram radiografados 130 filmes periapicais Insight® com um penetrômetro e placa de chumbo. Os filmes foram distribuídos em 13 grupos de acordo com o tempo de leitura em negatoscópio: 0 (controle), 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130, 140 e 150 s. Durante o processamento pelo método temperatura-tempo, nos grupos experimentais, após 5 s de imersão no fixador, os filmes foram removidos, postos contra a luz de um negatoscópio durante os tempos estudados e imersos no fixador para completar o processo de fixação. Foram mensuradas, imediatamente e após seis meses, as densidades base e velamento e as densidades do primeiro e último degrau do penetrômetro para o cálculo do contraste. RESULTADOS: Não houve diferença significativa em relação aos valores de densidade base e velamento e de contraste das radiografias dos grupos experimentais comparando-os com o grupo controle. CONCLUSÃO: Concluiu-se que, durante o processamento das radiografias, os tempos de leitura em negatoscópio não interferiram na densidade base e velamento, nem no contraste radiográfico, mesmo após seis meses de seu arquivamento.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the quality of radiographic images with regard to the time during which the fixing stage was interrupted to allow a preliminary reading of the image in the viewbox. METHODS: Radiographs were taken with 130 Insight® periapical films, including a step-wedge and lead plate. The films were distributed into 13 groups according to the time taken for reading in a viewbox: 0 (control), 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130, 140 and 150 s. During processing using the temperature-time method, the films in the experimental groups were removed 5 s after immersion in the fixer, placed against the light of a viewbox for the studied times and then re-immersed in the fixer to complete the fixation process. Base-plus-fog density and the densities of the first and last degree of the step-wedge were measured immediately and after six months to calculate the contrast. RESULTS: There were no significant differences with regard to the base-plus-fog density or the contrast values of the experimental groups when compared with the control group. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that interrupting the radiograph fixation process to read the image in a viewbox does not interfere with the base-plus-fog density or with the radiographic contrast, even six months after they were taken.

La calidad de la imagen radiográfica es esencial para el diagnóstico y conservación de radiografías en archivo. Así mismo, hay especialidades odontológicas que, por fuerza de la ejecución, necesitan obtener radiografías con mayor brevedad, siendo común que profesionales y alumnos recurran a procedimientos que perjudican su calidad con la justificación de ganar tiempo. De esta forma, este trabajo tuvo el propósito de enfatizar la importancia de optimizar la imagen radiográfica a través del análisis de errores en radiografías obtenidas por alumnos. Con este propósito fueron analizadas 572 radiografías provenientes de archivos de pacientes atendidos por los alumnos del 9º semestre de 1999, de la Clínica Integrada de la Facultad de Odontología de Pernambuco-UPE. Las radiografías fueron analizadas simultáneamente por dos observadores y de esas, 75% presentaron errores. Los errores asociados a la técnica radiográfica correspondieron a 58%, siendo de mayor prevalencia los errores de elongación de la imagen (35,7%) y encuadramiento de la región radiografiada (35%). Los errores que más ocurrieron durante el procesamiento fueron imágenes "amarillentas" (33%) y radiografías rasguñada (23%).

The quality of the radiographic image is essential for the diagnosis and conservation of x-rays in archive. However, there are some Dental specialties that, for force of the execution, require the attainment of x-rays with bigger brevity, being common professionals and students exist to appeal the procedures that cause the damage of its quality with the justification of time profit. Because of this, this work had the intention to emphasize the optimization importance of the radiographic image through the analysis of imperfections in x-rays taken by students. For such, 572 x-rays, proceeding from archives of patients taken care by the students of the ninth period of the 1999 first semester at the Polyclinic of Pernambuco Dental School -UPE, were analyzed simultaneously by two observers and out of these, 75% presented imperfections. Related to the type of imperfection, the execution of the technique had prevalence in the referring errors (58%), followed by the processing errors (19%). Framing of the exposed region (35%) and elongation of the image (35,7%) were the most prevalent errors in the phase of execution of the technique, while yellowish images (33%) and lacerated x-rays (23%) demonstrated to be the occurred imperfections most frequent during processing.
