This study highlights the synthesis of innovative polyurethane materials derived from Moringa oleifera oils extracted from two distinct sources. The oils were converted into their respective polyols through the in situ generated performic acid method. Diverse material characteristics were observed due to different agroclimatic and cultivation conditions for the sources. Extraction yields were 45.21% (source 1) and 40.32% (source 2), with acid values of 28.70 and 26.00 mg KOH per g of oil, respectively. Oleic acid constituted 79.87 and 67.11% of the oils composition, respectively. Nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the hydroxylation of the oils. FTIR also identified the isocyanate structures in the synthesized polyurethane materials. Gel permeation chromatography analysis revealed a higher oligomer content in the polyol synthesized from the oil extracted from source 2. Thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated enhanced thermal stability post-oil conversion, highlighting decomposition stages for rigid and flexible segments. Differential scanning calorimetry indicated higher unsaturation in the oil extracted from source 1, resulting in an elevated crystallization temperature. Tensile testing showed increased elasticity as the [NCO]/[OH] ratio decreased in the material, emphasizing the influence of polyol and crosslinking agent concentrations on mechanical resistance of polyurethane materials. sources method 4521 45 21 45.21 1 4032 40 32 40.32 2, 2 , 2) 2870 28 70 28.7 2600 26 00 26.0 respectively 7987 79 87 79.8 6711 67 11 67.11 composition (FTIR postoil post conversion segments temperature NCO/OH NCOOH NCO / OH [NCO]/[OH 452 4 45.2 403 3 40.3 287 7 28. 260 0 26. 798 8 79. 671 6 67.1 45. 40. 67.

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. Abstract Boulders are an important material in debris flow and their source is coupled with spheroidal weathering profiles that produce corestones. The goal of this work was to establish the geochemical transformations that produced corestones and distinguished them from the surrounding grus in two tropical granite weathering profiles (P1 and P2). Sampling was not performed in a vertical profile; instead, we gathered 13 (P1) to 16 (P2) samples displaying different weathering degrees (corestone and saprolite) and spatial positions in the profiles. We conducted the geochemistry (EDXRF/EDX and INAA) and mineralogy (petrography and XRD) of the samples. The CIA values ranged from 46 (corestones) to 93 (saprolite). Granite spheroidal weathering under a tropical mountainous slope develops mostly due to feldspar weathering (foremost plagioclase) in the following sequence: porosity growth, kaolinite, and gibbsite crystallization. Zircon weathering stability and its probable mobility as grain along the weathering profile play an important role in REE concentration. Spheroidal weathering is mainly a lixiviation process, yet specific locations (below the individualized corestones) presented REE enrichment due to translocation. They are hosted mainly by clay minerals and, to some extent, by amorphous Fe oxyhydroxide. The evolution of spheroidal weathering results in a vertical patchy weathering profile.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the pathogenesis of bloodstream infection by Staphylococcus epidermidis, using the molecular epidemiology, in high-risk neonates. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of a cohort of neonates with bloodstream infection using central venous catheters for more than 24 h. "National Healthcare Safety Network" surveillance was conducted. Genotyping was performed by DNA fingerprinting and mecA genes and icaAD were detected by multiplex-PCR. RESULTS: From April 2006 to April 2008, the incidence of bloodstream infection and central venous catheter-associated bloodstream infection was 15.1 and 13.0/1000 catheter days, respectively, with S. epidermidis accounting for 42.9% of episodes. Molecular analysis was used to document the similarity among six isolates of bloodstream infection by S. epidermidis from cases with positive blood and central venous catheter tip cultures. Fifty percent of neonates had bloodstream infection not identified as definite or probable central venous catheter-related bloodstream infection. Only one case was considered as definite central venous catheter-related bloodstream infection and was extraluminally acquired; the remaining were considered probable central venous catheter-related bloodstream infections, with one probable extraluminally and another probable intraluminally acquired bloodstream infection. Additionally, among mecA+ and icaAD+ samples, one clone (A) was predominant (80%). A polyclonal profile was found among sensitive samples that were not carriers of the icaAD gene. CONCLUSIONS: The majority of infections caused by S. epidermidis in neonates had an unknown origin, although 33.3% appeared to have been acquired intraluminally and extraluminally. We observed a polyclonal profile between sensitive samples and a prevalent clone (A) between resistant samples.

Despite many advances in the field of special education, there are relatively few studies on the subject of high abilities/giftedness (HA/G), particularly in the interior of Brazil. This paper presents results of a study that aimed to investigate the supposition that there is a basic lack of understanding about HA/G in the Pelotas Federal University (UFPel) teacher preparation courses. In this case study, data was collected from almost a third of the undergraduate students in mathematics courses. The survey instrument was a questionnaire designed to carry out a quantitative and qualitative analysis of their knowledge and conceptions about HA/G. The results pointed out that the majority of the students had not studied this topic and it is not addressed in their courses. For this reason, they are unaware of the relevant legislation on this theme, much less that the terms "giftedness" and "high abilities" mean the same thing. Due to their lack of information, their answers revealed various mythological conceptions, as juxtaposed to the literature. To mention one example, most of them had the assumption that gifted students form a homogeneous group whose members never fail in school.

INTRODUCTION: Report the incidence of nosocomial infections, causative microorganisms, risk factors associated with and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern in the NICU of the Uberlândia University Hospital. METHODS: Data were collected through the National Healthcare Safety Network surveillance from January 2006 to December 2009. The patients were followed five times/week from their birth to their discharge or death. RESULTS: The study included 1,443 patients, 209 of these developed NIs, totaling 293 NI episodes, principally bloodstream infections (203; 69.3%) and conjunctivitis (52; 17.7%). Device-associated infection rates were as follows: 17.3 primary bloodstream infections per 1,000 central line-days and 3.2 pneumonias per 1000 ventilator-days. The mortality rate in neonates with NI was 11.9%. Mechanical ventilation, total parenteral nutrition, orogastric tube, previous antibiotic therapy, use of CVC and birth weight of 751-1,000g appeared to be associated with a significantly higher risk of NI (p < 0.05). In multiple logistic regression analysis for NI, mechanical ventilation and the use of CVC were independent risk factors (p < 0.05). Coagulase- negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) (36.5%) and Staphylococcus aureus (23.6%) were the most common etiologic agents isolated from cultures. The incidences of oxacillin-resistant CoNS and S. aureus were 81.8% and 25.3%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Frequent surveillance was very important to evaluate the association of these well-known risk factors with NIs and causative organisms, assisting in drawing the attention of health care professionals to this potent cause of morbidity.

This paper reports an outbreak of acute schistosomiasis among 38 tourists who rented a country house in the district of Igarapé, the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, during a holiday period in 2006. A total number of 32 individuals were positive for Schistosoma mansoni. Results of stool examinations revealed individual S. mansoni egg counts per gram of faeces (epg) ranging from 4-768 epg with a geometric mean egg count of 45. The most frequent clinical symptoms were abdominal pain (78.1%), headache (75%), fever (65.6%), dry cough (65.2%) and both diarrhoea and asthenia (59.4%). A malacological survey of the area, where 22 specimens of Biomphalaria glabrata were collected, revealed three (13.6%) specimens eliminating Schistosoma cercariae. This investigation re-confirms a recently described pattern of schistosomiasis infection, resulting in the acute form of the disease and connected to rural tourism, which contributes to the spread of the disease among the middle-class and into non-endemic areas. The lack of specific knowledge about acute schistosomiasis among health services causes an increased number of unnecessary diagnostic procedures and delays in accurate diagnosis and treatment, resulting in considerable discomfort for the patients.

Shifts in Brazil's demographic structure have expanded the country's elderly population and consequently increased the rates of chronic diseases. This paper describes the prevalence of sedentary lifestyle and associated factors in a cross-sectional study, including 4,060 non-elderly and 4,003 elderly adults in 41 cities in seven States of the country. Prevalence of sedentary lifestyle was 31.8% (95%CI: 30.4-33.2) in non-elderly adults and 58.0% (95%CI: 56.4-59.5) in the elderly; sedentary lifestyle was more frequent in the Northeast and among males. Low family income was associated with higher prevalence of sedentary lifestyle in both non-elderly and elderly adults, while low schooling was only observed among the elderly. There was an inverse association between self-reported health status and sedentary lifestyle. Mean prevalence of sedentary lifestyle was higher in areas covered by pre-PROESF units in comparison to other health system models. We conclude that sedentary lifestyle is highly prevalent and that disadvantaged socioeconomic groups are more likely to be sedentary.

Herein we have focused attention on major phenotypic features of peripheral blood eosinophils from chronic Schistosoma mansoni-infected patients. For this purpose, detailed immunophenotypic profiles of a range of cell surface markers were performed, including activation markers (CD23/CD69/CD25/HLA-DR), co-stimulatory molecules (CD28/CD80/CD86), chemokine receptors (CXCR1/CXCR2/CCR3/CCR5) besides L-selectin-CD62L and adhesion molecules (CD18/CD54). Our major findings pointed out increased frequency of CD23+-cells, besides decreased percentages of CD69+-eosinophils, suggesting a chronic activation status with low frequency of early activated eosinophils in chronic S. mansoni-infected patients (INT) in comparison to non-infected individuals (NI). Moreover, a dichotomic expression of beta-chemokine receptors was observed during human schistosomiasis mansoni with higher CCR5 and lower levels of CCR3 observed between groups. Enhanced expression of co-stimulatory receptors (CD28/CD86) and adhesion molecules (CD54/CD18), besides striking lower frequency of L-selectin+ were reported for eosinophils from INT group as compared to NI. Interestingly, the frequency of CD62L+-eosinophils and a range of cell activation related molecules pointed out an opposite pattern of association in NI and INT, where only INT patients that display lower frequency of CD62L+-eosinophils (first CD62L tertile) kept the unusual relationship between the expression of L-selectin and the CD23 activation marker. These findings suggest that distinct dynamic of activation markers expressed by eosinophils may occur during chronic S. mansoni infection.

This was a systematic literature review on publications in which prenatal care was investigated as a predictive factor for birthweight. The MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and SciELO databases were searched using a combination of the following uniterms: "prenatal care", "antenatal care", "quality", "adequacy", "birthweight", and "low birthweight". Twenty-five studies were found: seventeen had a cross-sectional design, in addition to four cohort studies, three case-control studies, and one randomized trial. The adequacy indicators related to utilization (quantitative measures) and content of prenatal care (process or qualitative indicators). Most authors employed quantitative indicators, mainly the Kessner Index and the Adequacy of Prenatal Care Utilization Index. Qualitative criteria were used in only two studies. Most of the cross-sectional studies found a protective effect of prenatal care against low birthweight, whereas results of studies with other designs were conflicting. This review's findings highlight that the impact of prenatal care on birthweight is not unequivocal, mainly due to the effect of self-selection bias. Randomized trials are needed to elucidate such a relationship.

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between patients' and prenatal care characteristics and cesarean section prevalence. A cross-sectional study including structural and process-of-care variables was conducted at primary health care facilities in Pelotas, Brazil. All health centers were selected and 712 mothers were interviewed. The observed cesarean rate was 30.0%. Adjusted analyses showed that cesareans were associated with maternal characteristics (short stature, few pregnancies, planned pregnancy, hospitalization, and high blood pressure). Among health services variables, the study detected a direct protective effect of time since graduation by the physician providing the prenatal care and compliance with Prenatal Care Program guidelines. Higher cesarean section rates were observed at university hospitals. To reduce the cesarean section rate, maternal education during pregnancy, early diagnosis, and proper management of hypertension and causes of hospitalization are possible strategies for approaching the problem in the primary health care sector.
