ABSTRACT During the germination process, seeds are susceptible to abiotic and biotic stresses, such as attacks by pests and pathogens. In this context, chemical treatment of seeds can promote physiological and morphological changes in seeds and seedlings, in addition to protecting seeds. Two experiments were conducted with the following objectives: (I) assess the effect of soybean seed water content on seedling emergence under different water availability conditions; (II) assess the effect of chemical treatment of soybean seeds on seedling emergence under water stress conditions. In the first experiment, seeds of four cultivars had their water content adjusted to 8, 11, and 14% and were sown in soil under four water potential levels (-0.01; -0.02; -0.10 and -0.40 MPa). In the second experiment, seeds of the same cultivars were treated using metalaxyl, fludioxonil and thiamethoxam, and untreated seeds were used as controls. Sowing was carried out in soil under four water potentials, and seed quality parameters were evaluated in both experiments. The data subjected to analysis of variance, and the means were compared using the Tukey test at 5% probability level. There is no restriction on sowing soybean seeds with water content between 8 and 14% when the soil is under full water availability. RESUMO: O estudo foi realizado em um ovino, fêmea, de três anos de idade, da raça santa inês, procedente de uma propriedade localizada do município de Santo Antônio de Tauá, oeste do Pará. O animal acometido tinha histórico de exoftalmia no olho esquerdo, secreção nasal e dificuldade respiratória há mais de três meses. Ao exame físico o animal apresentava baixo escore corporal, apatia, assimetria facial unilateral, moderada exoftalmia unilateral esquerda, dispneia mista e exsudação nasal serossanguinolenta profusa unilateral. À necropsia, foi observada grande massa nasal, predominantemente branco-amarelada com áreas vermelho enegrecidas, de superfície irregular, finamente granular, úmida e friável. A massa invadia desde a junção mucocutânea do nariz esquerdo até as coanas, se infiltrava pelos seios nasais frontais, placa cribiforme e alcançava as meninges e a porção frontal do cérebro. ABSTRACT: The study was conducted on a 3-year-old female Santa Inês sheep from a property located in the municipality of Santo Antônio de Tauá, west of Pará. The affected animal had a history of exophthalmos in the left eye, nasal discharge, and breathing difficulty for more than three months. On physical examination, the animal had a low body score, apathy, unilateral facial asymmetry, moderate unilateral left exophthalmos, mixed dyspnea and unilateral profuse serosanguinous nasal discharge. At necropsy, a large nasal mass was observed, predominantly yellowish-white with blackish-red areas, with an irregular, finely granular, moist, and friable surface. The mass invaded from the mucocutaneous junction of the left nostril to the choanae, infiltrated the frontal sinuses, the cribiform plate, and reached the meninges and the frontal portion of the brain. Microscopy of the surface of the nasal epithelium showed severe destruction of the turbinates and epithelia, evidenced by extensive areas of necrosis with a large amount of cellular debris, ulceration, and secondary bacterial infection. In the central nervous system there was pyogranulomatous meningitis with marked vessel congestion, as well as foci of necrosis and granulomatous inflammation. Immunohistochemistry showed intense staining of numerous intralesional hyphae for antibodies against Conidiobolus lamprauges. RESUMO Objetivo: Estudos têm mostrado que a prática de automedicar crianças ocorre mundialmente e independe do nível econômico do país, das políticas de medicamentos ou do acesso aos serviços de saúde. O objetivo deste estudo foi estimar e caracterizar a prevalência de uso de medicamentos por automedicação na população brasileira de crianças de zero a 12 anos de idade. Métodos: Foram analisadas informações de 7.528 crianças de zero a 12 anos cujo cuidador principal respondeu à Pesquisa Nacional sobre Acesso, Utilização e Promoção do Uso Racional de Medicamentos no Brasil (PNAUM), estudo transversal de base populacional realizado em 245 municípios brasileiros. A prevalência de automedicação foi definida como o uso de pelo menos um medicamento sem indicação de médico ou dentista nos 15 dias anteriores à entrevista. Resultados: A prevalência de automedicação foi de 22,2% e foi mais frequente nas crianças mais velhas e pertencentes a famílias mais pobres e sem plano de saúde. As condições agudas para as quais houve maior frequência de automedicação foram dor, febre, resfriado e rinite alérgica. ABSTRACT Objetive: Studies have shown that the practice of self-medicating children occurs worldwide and is independent of the country’s economic level, medication policies, or access to health services. This study aimed to estimate and characterize the prevalence of self-medication in the Brazilian population of children aged up to 12 years. Methods: We analyzed the data of 7528 children aged up to 12 years whose primary caregivers responded to the National Survey on Access, Use and Promotion of Rational Use of Medicines in Brazil (PNAUM), a cross-sectional population-based study conducted in 245 Brazilian municipalities. Caracterizado por síntomas que permanecen o aparecen por primera vez dentro de los tres meses posteriores a la infección por SARS-CoV-2, la COVID larga puede manifestarse de diferentes formas, incluso entre casos no hospitalizados o asintomáticos. En este sentido, este artículo presenta un panorama la COVID larga en Brasil, con énfasis en el diagnóstico, los síntomas y los desafíos para la nueva gestión de la salud. Se utilizaron datos de una encuesta realizada para investigar la COVID larga en personas afectadas por COVID-19. Se trata de datos originales de una encuesta con individuos brasileños adultos (18 años o más), que tuvieron COVID-19, con datos recolectados entre el 14 de marzo y el 14 de abril de 2022, por medio de un cuestionario divulgado en las redes sociales. El cuestionario abordó características sociodemográficas, historial de infecciones por COVID-19, vacunación contra la enfermedad, investigación de la situación de salud y de la calidad de vida antes y después de COVID-19, además de la búsqueda y acceso a tratamiento. De los 1.728 encuestados, 720 fueron considerados elegibles para el análisis. De ellos, 496 (69%) tenían COVID larga. Characterized by symptoms that remain or appear for the first time within three months of SARS-CoV-2 infection, long COVID can manifest itself in different ways, including in non-hospitalized or asymptomatic cases. Thus, this study offers an overview of long COVID in Brazil, especially of its diagnosis, symptoms, and challenges for new health management. Data from a study that investigated long COVID in people affected by COVID-19 were used. These original data stem from a survey with adult Brazilians (aged 18 years or older) who had COVID-19 that collected information from March 14 to April 14, 2022, by a questionnaire on social media. The questionnaire addressed sociodemographic characteristics, history of COVID-19 infections, vaccination against the disease, investigation of health status and quality of life before and after COVID-19, and search and access to treatment. Of the 1,728 respondents, 720 were considered eligible for analysis, of which 496 (69%) had long COVID. Individuals with long COVID reported clinical manifestations such as anxiety (80%), memory loss (78%), generalized pain (77%), lack of attention (75%), fatigue (73%), hair loss (71%), sleep changes (70%), mood swings (62%), malaise (60%), and joint pain (59%). Most sought health services during and after the acute phase of COVID-19 (94 and 80%, respectively), representing the need to structure the healthcare system for these patients.

RESUMO Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) é o vetor do agente da leishmaniose visceral (LV) no Novo Mundo de maior relevância epidemiológica. Em 25 de outubro de 2023, o Centro de Informações Estratégicas em Vigilância em Saúde de Macapá detectou um caso de LV no bairro Km9 desse município. O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar as espécies de flebotomíneos nessa área a fim de auxiliar na confirmação da autoctonia do caso. Foram coletados 12 espécimes, desses, cinco foram de Lu. longipalpis, confirmando assim a presença do vetor do agente da LV e a possível autoctonia da transmissão.

ABSTRACT Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) constitutes the most epidemiologically relevant vector of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the New World. On October 25, 2023, the Macapá Center for Strategic Information in Health Surveillance registered a case of VL in the Km9 neighborhood, in Macapá. This study aimed to describe the Phlebotominae species in this area to assist the confirmation of the autochthony of the case. In total, 12 specimens were collected, of which five belonged to the Lutzomyia longipalpis species, confirming the presence of the VL agent vector and the possible autochthony of the transmission.

Resumo Objetivo Validar um inquérito de conhecimento, atitude e prática sobre medidas preventivas da COVID-19 para os funcionários do sistema penitenciário, fundamentado na teoria ambientalista. Métodos Estudo metodológico desenvolvido em quatro etapas: estabelecimento da estrutura conceitual, elaboração do instrumento, validação do conteúdo por juízes e avaliação da aparência pelo público-alvo. O conteúdo de cada item foi validado quanto a objetividade, clareza e relevância. A aparência do inquérito foi avaliada quanto ao objetivo, a organização, ao estilo da escrita e a motivação. Utilizou-se o coeficiente de validação de conteúdo para avaliar a concordância entre os juízes e entre o público-alvo. Os dados foram analisados por meio de distribuições brutas, percentuais, medidas de posição e de dispersão. O índice alfa de Cronbach foi utilizado para analisar a consistência das avaliações dos juízes e do público-alvo. Resultados Quanto ao conteúdo e a aparência, os requisitos avaliados obtiveram concordância superior a 0,9. Na avaliação da consistência, obteve-se índice alfa de Cronbach > 0,9 e > 0,7, quanto ao conteúdo e à aparência, respectivamente, indicando que juízes e público-alvo tenderam a fazer avaliações similares. Abstract Objective To validate a knowledge, attitude and practice survey on preventive measures against COVID-19 for penitentiary system staff based on environmental theory. Methods This is a methodological study developed in four stages: conceptual structure establishment; instrument elaboration; content validity by judges; and appearance assessment by the target audience. The content of each item was validated for objectivity, clarity and relevance. Survey appearance was assessed regarding objective, organization, writing style and motivation. Content validity coefficient was used to assess agreement among judges and the target audience. Data were analyzed using gross distributions, percentages, position and dispersion measures. Cronbach’s alpha index was used to analyze the consistency of judges’ and target audience’s assessments. Results Regarding content and appearance, the assessed requirements achieved agreement greater than 0.9. In consistency assessment, a Cronbach’s alpha index > 0.9 and > 0.7 was obtained for content and appearance, respectively, indicating that judges and target audiences tended to make similar assessments. Abstract Tea is identified as the second most consumed drink in the world, and its frequent intake is related to several benefits to human health, considering its antimutagenic, anticarcinogenic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antihistamine, diuretic, calming, and above all, antioxidant effects. These effects are often associated with the action of the phenolic compounds contained in these infusions. In Brazil, among the most consumed infusions are the teas of chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.), lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus (D.C.) Stapf), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.), anise (Pimpinella anisum L.), yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil), peppermint (Mentha piperita L.), and green/black tea (Camellia sinensis L.). Therefore, said popularity is the reason why the mentioned species were chosen to be evaluated on inflammatory enzymes. The activity of phospholipases A2 was reduced by more than 25% after treatment with black tea and yerba mate. The most significant inhibition of protease activity was observed after incubation with black tea (40.74%), green tea (31.48%) and yerba mate (25.93%). Infusions of black and green tea reduced hemolysis in semisolid and liquid media, and for the latter, reductions of up to 50% of hemolytic activity were observed, indicating an anti-inflammatory potential of the samples. Plasma incubations with green tea, black tea and lemon balm and subsequent addition of venom (1:10 ratio; tea:PBS, v:v) prolonged the coagulation time of citrated plasma by approximately twice compared to the positive control. All controls with pure tea had a thrombolytic character, in higher proportions than the venom control, especially chamomile (273.55% dissolution). Phenolic compounds derived from phenolic acids, flavonoids, and tannins are identified as the main agents that promote the biological effects observed in this study. This is mainly due to their anti-catalytic properties exerted on inflammatory enzymes and as chelating agents of enzymatic co-factors. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a frequência, os motivos e fatores associados à não adesão intencional à terapia medicamentosa. Métodos: Foi conduzido um estudo transversal de base populacional com dados da Pesquisa Nacional sobre Acesso, Utilização e Promoção do Uso Racional de Medicamentos (PNAUM). O questionário foi composto por questões sociodemográficas, referentes à presença de doenças crônicas, uso de medicamentos, autoavaliação de saúde e comportamentos no uso de medicamentos. A análise dos dados incluiu modelos de regressão de Poisson ajustados para variância. Resultados: Foram incluídos 31.573 indivíduos, sendo a maioria do sexo feminino (53,8%), com baixa escolaridade (57,7%) e com autoavaliação de saúde boa (56,5%). Dos entrevistados, 8,8% relataram aumentar a dose dos medicamentos e 21,2% relataram diminuir. O motivo mais comum para a diminuição da dose foram os efeitos adversos do medicamento. Não houve diferenças para os motivos de aumento de doses. O aumento ou a diminuição de doses foi mais comumente reportado pelos mais jovens, com menor renda per capita e pior autoavaliação de saúde. Conclusão: Uma parcela considerável dos entrevistados não adere intencionalmente à terapia medicamentosa. Entender a não adesão medicamentosa e identificar quem a pratica é crucial para criar estratégias eficazes que promovam a adesão medicamentosa e priorizem as necessidades e perspectivas dos pacientes.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the frequency, reasons and factors associated with intentional nonadherence to drug therapy. Methods: A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted with data from the National Survey on Access, Use and Promotion of Rational Use of Medicines (PNAUM). The questionnaire consisted of sociodemographic questions, presence of chronic diseases, medication use, self-rated health, and medication use behaviors. Data analysis included Poisson regression models adjusted for variance. Results: A total of 31,573 individuals were included, most of whom were women (53.8%), with low level of education (57.7%), and self-rated good health (56.5%). Of those interviewed, 8.8% reported increasing the medication dose and 21.2% reported reducing it. The most common reason for dose reduction was the adverse effects of the medication. There were no differences in the reasons for increasing doses. Increasing or reducing doses were most commonly reported by younger people, with lower per capita income and worse self-rated health. Conclusion: A considerable portion of the respondents did not intentionally adhere to drug therapy. Understanding nonadherence and identifying those who practice it is crucial for creating effective strategies that promote adherence to treatment and prioritize patients’ needs and perspectives.

Houve diferenças no conteúdo de EE, FDN, EBa, EB, ED, EM e EL entre lotes. Um total de 40 machos castrados 72.69 ± 5.66 kg foram distribuídos em blocos ao caso, alimentados com dietas com 0, 100, 200 e 300 g kg−1 DDGS por 28 dias. A inclusão de DDGS não afetou consumo de ração diário, ganho de peso diário e conversão alimentar mas reduziu de forma linear o peso final. Baseados nos resultados de desempenho, preços de ingredientes e mercado local foram calculados os custos de ração, receita e lucro operacional bruto (LOB). Abstract The chemical and nutritional characteristics of the four distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) were determined for dry matter (DM), mineral matter (MM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and gross energy analyzed (GEa), from which the values of gross energy (GE), digestible energy (DE), metabolizable energy (ME) and net energy (NE) were estimated. There were differences in the contents of EE, NDF, GEa, GE, DE, ME and NE between the lots. A total of 40 barrows with an initial weight of 72.69 ± 5.66 kg were assigned to a randomized block design, fed diets containing 0, 100, 200 and 300 g kg−1 DDGS for 28 days and were subjected to performance assessment. The inclusion of DDGS in the diets did not affect daily feed intake (DFI), daily weight gain (DWG) or feed conversion (FC) but linearly reduced the final weight. Based on the results of the performance and prices of ingredients in the local market, we calculated the costs of feed, revenue and gross operating profit (GOP). RESUMO: Descrevem-se os achados clínicos, epidemiológicos e anatomopatológicos das intoxicações por anti-helmínticos em pequenos ruminantes diagnosticadas no Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, Patos, Paraíba, durante o período de janeiro de 2000 a dezembro de 2022. Foram realizadas 1.928 necropsias de pequenos ruminantes, sendo 1.032 caprinos e 896 ovinos. Destes, foram identificados quatro surtos de intoxicação por anti-helmínticos nessas espécies: um surto de intoxicação por ivermectina em ovino, um surto de disofenol em caprinos e ovinos e dois surtos por nitroxinil em caprinos. Essas intoxicações representaram 0,78% e 0,23% das doenças de caprinos e ovinos diagnosticadas na rotina, respectivamente. Na intoxicação por ivermectina o animal apresentava sinais clínicos neurológicos e não foram observadas alterações macroscópicas e histopatológicas. Nos surtos de disofenol e nitroxinil, os animais demonstravam anorexia, hipertermia, taquicardia, tremores, dispneia, incoordenação e rigidez de membros. Macroscopicamente observou-se lesões hepáticas e renais associadas a alterações circulatórias como hemorragias e edemas. Microscopicamente observou-se necrose e degeneração de hepatócitos e das células epiteliais tubulares associadas a hemorragia e congestão. A prevalência dessas intoxicações em pequenos ruminantes é considerada baixa no Semiárido nordestino, entretanto, os surtos podem ocorrer com alta letalidade nos rebanhos. ABSTRACT: The clinical, epidemiological and anatomopathological findings of anthelmintic poisoning in small ruminants diagnosed at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Campina Grande, Patos, Paraíba, from January 2000 to December 2022 are described. A total of 1,928 necropsies were carried out on small ruminants, of which 1,032 were goats and 896 sheep. Four outbreaks of anthelmintic poisoning were identified in these species: one outbreak of ivermectin in sheep, one outbreak of disophenol in goats and sheep and two outbreaks of nitroxinil in goats. These intoxications accounted for 0.78% and 0.23% of goat and sheep diseases diagnosed routinely. In the case of ivermectin poisoning, the animal had neurological clinical signs, and no macroscopic or histopathological alterations were observed. In the outbreaks of disophenol and nitroxinil, the animals showed anorexia, hyperthermia, tachycardia, tremors, dyspnea, incoordination and limb rigidity. Macroscopically, there were liver and kidney lesions associated with circulatory alterations, such as hemorrhages and edema. Microscopically, necrosis and degeneration of hepatocytes and tubular epithelial cells associated with hemorrhage and congestion were observed. The prevalence of these intoxications in small ruminants is considered low in the Semi-arid Northeast, but outbreaks can occur with high lethality in herds. RESUMO Objetivo: desenvolver e avaliar um curso online utilizando WebQuests sobre gerenciamento de antimicrobianos para graduandos em enfermagem, baseado em consenso internacional. Método: pesquisa metodológica para o desenvolvimento e a validação de estratégia educativa, e pesquisa quantitativa e descritiva, para se avaliar sua praticabilidade, realizada no período de março de 2021 a abril de 2022. Após o desenvolvimento, houve a validação de aparência e conteúdo do material por juízes, adotando-se o índice de validade de conteúdo superior a 0,80 para cada item. As quatro WebQuests validadas foram disponibilizadas em formato de curso no Portal de Cursos Abertos da Universidade Federal de São Carlos. Foi elaborado um instrumento em formato eletrônico para avaliar a praticabilidade da estratégia educativa segundo a visão de 73 graduandos em enfermagem. ABSTRACT Objective: to develop and evaluate an online course using WebQuests on antimicrobial stewardship for nursing students, based on international consensus. Method: this is a methodological study to develop and validate an educational strategy, as well as quantitative and descriptive to evaluate its practicability. The study was conducted from March 2021 to April 2022. After development, there was validation of the appearance and content of the material by judges, adopting a content validity index greater than 0.80 for each item. The four validated WebQuests were made available in course format on the Open Courses Portal of the Federal University of São Carlos. An instrument was developed in electronic format to evaluate the practicality of the educational strategy according to the views of 73 nursing students. The results were stored in Excel spreadsheets and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: the educational strategy was validated by 10 expert judges, with a total content validity index greater than 0.90 for appearance and content. RESUMO Objetivo: Relatar as adaptações realizadas na Técnica de Grupo Nominal (TGN) original, permitindo sua aplicação ao formato virtual, preservando todos os seus elementos-chave. Método: Relato de experiência sobre as adaptações e adequações realizadas na TGN original ao formato virtual aplicando as Tecnologias da Informação e Comunicação (TIC), por meio de ferramentas digitais disponibilizadas gratuitamente ou de baixo custo e de fácil manejo. Resultados: A TGN foi realizada integralmente de forma virtual e sofreu adaptações em cada uma das suas quatro etapas através da incorporação de recursos digitais específicos. Foi possível apresentar as ideias mais votadas e obter a aprovação final dos participantes. Os participantes não apresentaram dificuldade para utilizar os recursos virtuais disponibilizados, e, partir da avaliação de reação, mostram-se satisfeitos com as ferramentas disponibilizadas. ABSTRACT Objective: To report on the adaptations made to the original Nominal Group Technique (NGT), allowing it to be applied to the virtual format, preserving all its key elements. Method: An experience report on the adaptations and adjustments made to the original NGT to the virtual format using Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), using digital tools that are available free of charge or are low cost and easy to use. Results: The NGT was carried out entirely virtually and underwent adaptations in each of its four stages through the incorporation of specific digital resources. Abstract Despite the prevalence of substance use during pregnancy, studies focusing exclusively on Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) admissions remain limited. This study investigates the impact of maternal use of tobacco, alcohol, and/or crack, on neonatal outcomes among infants admitted to three Brazilian NICUs. Additionally, the investigation explores the impact of substance use on DNA damage in newborns. Over a one-year period, data from 254 newborns were collected through medical records, accompanied by blood samples. Findings revealed that 16.1% of newborns had mothers reporting substance use during pregnancy. Significant associations were found between maternal substance use and adverse neonatal outcomes, including low birth weight, preterm birth, and sexually transmitted infections. Maternal variables linked to substance use encompassed non-white skin color, low education, non-masonry housing, lower income, diseases in other children, and fewer prenatal consultations. Notably, neonatal DNA damage showed no significant association with substance use. ABSTRACT Arboviruses transmitted by Aedes aegypti, such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya, pose significant public health threats. The biological agent Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) has been explored as an effective, safe, and economically sustainable method to reduce mosquito populations. This study aimed to identify Bt strains with potent larvicidal activity against Ae. aegypti, contributing to the development of effective bioinsecticides. We evaluated 13 Bt strains from the Embrapa Maize and Sorghum collection against Ae. aegypti larvae. Five replicates of each strain were prepared in 200 mL containers, each containing 18 mL of autoclaved distilled water, 2 mL of bacterial suspension (108 spores/mL), and 20 third-instar Ae. aegypti larvae. Mortality rates were monitored by counting live and dead larvae at 1, 24, 48 and 72 hours. PCR characterization was used to identify genes associated with toxicity for lepidopteran and dipteran pests in three strains. The bioassays confirmed the toxicity of the larvae, with strains 1644 and 1608A causing 100% and 95% mortality, respectively, within 24 hours. Strain 1656 showed 85% mortality up to 72 hours. Larvae exposed to Bt suspensions of strains 1644, 1608A, and 1656 lost agility, their tegument lost their shine, and the color became opaque and eventually darkened after death. Characterization of strain 1656 revealed the presence of cry and vip genes, which are associated with toxic activity in dipterans.
