RESUMO Objetivo: descrever a condição miofuncional orofacial global de pacientes com traumatismos faciais e analisar aspectos posturais e de mobilidade relacionados à função deglutição em diferentes etapas de recuperação. Métodos: estudo analítico e transversal. 36 participantes, idade entre 19 e 67 anos. Realizada em cinco etapas (D1, D2, D3, D4 e D5): oitavo ao sexagésimo dia após trauma. Utilizou-se o Protocolo de Avaliação Miofuncional Orofacial com Escores (AMIOFE) adaptado. Foi realizada análise estatística descritiva e inferencial, utilizando os testes t-Student pareado ou teste Wilcoxon pareado e o teste de Friedman na comparação entre as cinco avaliações. A margem de erro utilizada na decisão dos testes estatísticos foi de 5%. Resultados: nos movimentos labiais a maioria (69,4%) tinha inabilidade severa. Nos movimentos da língua, as duas categorias relacionadas, falta de precisão e inabilidade severa, apresentaram percentuais de 52,8% e 41,7%, respectivamente. Na movimentação da mandíbula, a maioria (83,3%) apresentava inabilidade severa. No escore AMIOFE, a mediana foi menos elevada em D1 (29,00), seguida por D2 (33,00), mais elevada em D5 (46,00) e variou de 39,50 a 41,00 nas outras duas avaliações com diferenças significativas entre: D1 diferente de D3, D4 e D5 e D2 diferente de D5. Conclusão: houve evolução positiva espontânea da condição miofuncional orofacial ao longo das avaliações. Contudo, é necessária atenção dos profissionais envolvidos. ABSTRACT Purpose: to describe the global orofacial myofunctional condition of patients presented with facial trauma and analyze postural and mobility aspects related to swallowing function at different stages of recovery. RESUMO: O estudo foi realizado em um ovino, fêmea, de três anos de idade, da raça santa inês, procedente de uma propriedade localizada do município de Santo Antônio de Tauá, oeste do Pará. O animal acometido tinha histórico de exoftalmia no olho esquerdo, secreção nasal e dificuldade respiratória há mais de três meses. Ao exame físico o animal apresentava baixo escore corporal, apatia, assimetria facial unilateral, moderada exoftalmia unilateral esquerda, dispneia mista e exsudação nasal serossanguinolenta profusa unilateral. À necropsia, foi observada grande massa nasal, predominantemente branco-amarelada com áreas vermelho enegrecidas, de superfície irregular, finamente granular, úmida e friável. A massa invadia desde a junção mucocutânea do nariz esquerdo até as coanas, se infiltrava pelos seios nasais frontais, placa cribiforme e alcançava as meninges e a porção frontal do cérebro. À microscopia da superfície do epitélio nasal notou-se severa destruição dos cornetos e dos epitélios, evidenciada por extensas áreas de necrose com muitos debris celulares, ulceração e infecção bacteriana secundária. ABSTRACT: The study was conducted on a 3-year-old female Santa Inês sheep from a property located in the municipality of Santo Antônio de Tauá, west of Pará. The affected animal had a history of exophthalmos in the left eye, nasal discharge, and breathing difficulty for more than three months. On physical examination, the animal had a low body score, apathy, unilateral facial asymmetry, moderate unilateral left exophthalmos, mixed dyspnea and unilateral profuse serosanguinous nasal discharge. At necropsy, a large nasal mass was observed, predominantly yellowish-white with blackish-red areas, with an irregular, finely granular, moist, and friable surface. The mass invaded from the mucocutaneous junction of the left nostril to the choanae, infiltrated the frontal sinuses, the cribiform plate, and reached the meninges and the frontal portion of the brain. Microscopy of the surface of the nasal epithelium showed severe destruction of the turbinates and epithelia, evidenced by extensive areas of necrosis with a large amount of cellular debris, ulceration, and secondary bacterial infection. In the central nervous system there was pyogranulomatous meningitis with marked vessel congestion, as well as foci of necrosis and granulomatous inflammation. Immunohistochemistry showed intense staining of numerous intralesional hyphae for antibodies against Conidiobolus lamprauges. The diagnosis of granulomatous rhinitis of mycotic origin associated with the Conidiobolus lamprauges was based on epidemiological, clinical-pathological, and immunohistochemical data. ABSTRACT There is great interest in varieties with greater competitive ability against weeds. This can be facilitated by path analysis, which involves the statistical evaluation and interpretation of the relationship between yield and its components. In this analysis, the occurrence of multicollinearity results in inconsistent estimates of the coefficients, and overestimates of the direct effects of the explanatory variables on the response variable. The aim of this study was to identify the characteristics with the greatest direct effect on pod yield and green and dry bean yields in traditional cowpea varieties, evaluated in competition with weeds in two experiments. In addition, the presence of multicollinearity was investigated in the analyses. In Experiment-1, twelve varieties with the highest bean yields in a preliminary evaluation were assessed in a randomized block design with five replications. In Experiment-2, six varieties, selected in the preliminary evaluation, were assessed using two methods of weed management: three of the most productive and three of the least productive. RESUMO Este estudo avaliou a eficácia da terapia com luz de baixo nível (LLLT) no tratamento de três pacientes com paralisia de Bell (PB) e revisou a literatura relevante. O primeiro caso envolveu uma mulher de 52 anos com PB grau V, que, após receber tratamento farmacológico e realizar sete sessões de LLLT (780 nm; 70 mW; E = 9 J), melhorou para grau II em 21 dias. O segundo caso foi de um homem de 37 anos que, após não ter apresentado resposta ao tratamento anteriormente, recebeu 24 sessões de LLLT e progrediu de grau V para grau II ao longo de 4 meses. O terceiro caso envolveu um homem de 40 anos que, após medicação e oito sessões de LLLT, melhorou de grau V para grau I em 1,5 meses. No geral, a LLLT demonstrou melhorar significativamente a função facial, a estética e o bem-estar geral desses pacientes em um período relativamente curto.

ABSTRACT This study evaluated the efficacy of low-level light therapy (LLLT) in the treatment of three patients with Bell's palsy (BP) and reviewed relevant literature. The first case involved a 52year-old woman with grade V BP, who, after receiving pharmacological treatment and undergoing seven sessions of LLLT (780 nm; 70 mW; E = 9 J), improved to grade II within 21 days. The second case was a 37-year-old man who, having previously shown no response to treatment, received 24 sessions of LLLT and progressed from grade V to grade II over the course of 4 months. The third case involved a 40-year-old man who, following medication and eight sessions of LLLT, improved from grade V to grade I in 1.5 months. Overall, LLLT was found to significantly enhance facial function, aesthetics, and overall well-being in these patients within a relatively short period.

RESUMEN Este estudio evaluó la eficacia de la terapia por luz de baja intensidad (LLLT, por sus siglas en inglés) en el tratamiento de tres pacientes con parálisis de Bell (BP) y revisó la literatura relacionada. Un caso involucró a una mujer de 52 años con BP grado V, quien, después de recibir terapia con medicamentos y siete sesiones de LLLT (780 nm; 70 mW; E = 9 J), mejoró al grado II en 21 días. Otro caso, un hombre de 37 años, previamente no receptivo a tratamientos, se sometió a 24 sesiones de LLLT, pasando del grado V al II en 4 meses. Finalmente, un hombre de 40 años tratado con medicamentos y 8 sesiones de LLLT mejoró del grado V al I en 1,5 meses. En esencia, la LLLT mejoró significativamente las funciones faciales, la estética y el bienestar general de los pacientes en un corto período de tiempo.

RESUMEN Introducción: El ejercicio físico puede ser una alternativa para prevenir y tratar los efectos nocivos de la obesidad, principalmente los efectos inflamatorios sobre los tejidos del músculo esquelético y del hígado. Sin embargo, no existe consenso sobre cuál es el mejor modelo de entrenamiento físico para este fin. Objetivo: Evaluar las alteraciones morfológicas, metabólicas e inflamatorias del entrenamiento aeróbico y de resistencia en sobre los tejidos músculo esqueléticos y hepáticos de ratas. Métodos: 24 ratas Wistar se dividieron en grupos sedentarios (S), aeróbicos (AE) y de entrenamiento de resistencia (R). Se midieron periódicamente glucosa en sangre, colesterol total y triglicéridos. Después de la eutanasia, se midió la masa corporal para calcular la ganancia de masa total durante el experimento. Se midió la lipoproteína de alta densidad (HDL). Se extrajo tejido adiposo para calcular su porcentaje relativo a la masa corporal, así como hígado, músculos sóleo y gastrocnemio para análisis morfológicos y concentraciones de glucógeno, lípidos y Factor de Necrosis Tumoral α (TNF-α). Para el análisis estadístico fueron utilizados Kruskall-Wallis y el post-test de Dunn, adoptando p<0,05. Resultados: Ambos entrenamientos redujeron el porcentaje de tejido adiposo, masa corporal y la concentración de TNF-α hepático (p<0,05). AE aumentó el HDL sérico, el diámetro de la fibra del gastrocnemio y redujo la dimensión fractal en el sóleo (p<0,05). ABSTRACT Introduction: Physical exercise can be an alternative for preventing and treating the harmful effects of obesity, mainly inflammatory effects on skeletal muscle and liver tissues. However, no consensus exists regarding this purpose's best physical training model. Objective: Evaluate morphological, metabolic, and inflammatory alterations in rats’ skeletal and hepatic muscle tissues caused by aerobic and resistance training. Methods: 24 Wistar rats were divided into sedentary (S), aerobic (AE), and resistance training (R) groups. Blood glucose, total cholesterol, and serum triglycerides were measured periodically. After euthanasia, body mass was measured to calculate the total mass gain during the experiment. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) was measured. Adipose tissue was extracted to calculate its percentage relative to body mass and the liver, soleus, and gastrocnemius muscles for morphological analyses and concentrations of glycogen, lipids, and Tumor Necrosis Factor α (TNF-α). The Kruskall-Wallis test and Dunn's post-test were performed for statistical analysis, adopting p<0.05. Results: Both training models reduced the percentage of adipose tissue, body mass gain, and hepatic TNF-α concentration (p<0.05). AE increased serum HDL, gastrocnemius fiber diameter and reduced the fractal dimension in the soleus (p<0.05). RESUMO Introdução: O uso de alinhadores transparentes como alternativa aos aparelhos ortodônticos fixos tem se tornado popular, devido às demandas estéticas dos pacientes adultos em busca de tratamento ortodôntico. No entanto, a falta de conhecimento dos ortodontistas sobre as consequências jurídicas de suas atividades, e a falta de evidências científicas sólidas levantam preocupações em relação à responsabilidade civil nesse tipo de tratamento. Muitas vezes, as campanhas de marketing das empresas fabricantes exageram nas promessas de resultados e desconsideram a falta de evidências científicas. O paciente, como consumidor, é protegido pelo Código de Defesa do Consumidor, e o ortodontista é considerado um fornecedor de tratamento. ABSTRACT Introduction: The use of clear aligners as an alternative to fixed orthodontic appliances has become popular due to the aesthetic demands of adult patients seeking orthodontic treatment. However, orthodontists’ lack of knowledge about the legal consequences of their activities, and the lack of solid scientific evidence raise concerns regarding civil liability in this type of treatment. Marketing campaigns of manufacturing companies often exaggerate promises of results, and ignore the lack of scientific evidence. Patients, as consumers, are protected by the Consumer Protection Code, whereas orthodontists are considered treatment providers. Therefore, they can be held liable for damage caused to patients, whether by subjective or objective fault. RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo desta pesquisa é avaliar se há efetividade do laser de alta potência no tratamento da pigmentação melânica gengival. Métodos: Esta pesquisa constitui-se de uma revisão integrativa realizada no período de setembro de 2021 a maio de 2022 buscando responder à seguinte pergunta: “Qual é a efetividade clínica do laser no tratamento da pigmentação melânica gengival?”. Os artigos foram analisados por duas pesquisadoras e as informações dos artigos foram coletadas com ênfase nos seguintes dados: autores, ano de publicação, objetivos do estudo, metodologia, resultados e conclusão. ABSTRACT Objective: To perform an integrative literature review about effectiveness of high-power laser in the treatment of gingival melanin pigmentation. Methods: This research consists of an integrative review conducted from September 2021 to May 2022 seeking to answer the following question: “What is the clinical effectiveness of laser in the treatment of gingival melanin pigmentation?”. The articles were analyzed by two researchers and the information about these was collected with emphasis on the following data: authors, year of publication, study objectives, methodology, results and conclusion. Results: Of the 16 articles initially selected, 08 were excluded (3 literature reviews, 4 internship reports and 1 monography). Thus, 8 articles were selected. Conclusion: Among several types of lasers and techniques for its use, laser, especially diode laser, was the most used technique and presented better aesthetic results, less pain, faster healing, preference and patient satisfaction after treatment. SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the predictors of survival among patients with coronavirus disease 2019 who underwent tracheal intubation, as part of a hospital cohort study. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study in the Rio do Sul County Hospital, Santa Catarina, Brazil, from April 2020 to May 2021, focused on patients aged 18 years or older intubated for coronavirus disease 2019. We assessed the 90-day survival of intubated patients by estimating the hazard ratio using a Cox proportional hazards regression model. RESULTS: The study included 132 participants, with an average age of approximately 60 years. Tracheal intubation was successfully accomplished in 97% of cases within two attempts. The overall mortality rate was 62.9%. Notably, mortality rates were significantly higher in patients aged over 60 years (hazard ratio=2.57; 95%CI 1.54–4.29; p<0.001), those with blood oxygen saturation below 85% (hazard ratio=1.92; 95%CI 1.03–3.57; p=0.04), instances where tracheal intubation was carried out using a conventional laryngoscope (hazard ratio=2.59; 95%CI 1.22–5.48; p=0.013), and when performed by emergency physicians (hazard ratio=3.96; 95%CI 1.51–10.4; p=0.005). CONCLUSION: Our analysis unveiled that the risk of death in intubated coronavirus disease 2019 patients is four times higher when an emergency physician, as opposed to an anesthesiologist, leads the tracheal intubation team. ABSTRACT Sugarcane irrigation is one of the main technologies to increase productivity and profitability in the sugar-energy sector. However, to improve the management of water resources in Brazil, growers need to obtain a water rights permitfrom regulatory agencies. The calculation of water rights is determined from data based on estimates of rainfall and reference evapotranspiration (ETo) provided by the Agência Nacional de Águas e Saneamento Básico (ANA). The primary hypothesis of this study was that the method proposed by ANA to calculate water rights did not provide operational security since it lacked an adequate probabilistic character. As a corollary, we included a secondary hypothesis stating that determining flows through the simplified FAO method proposed in the CROPWAT 8.0 manual displayed vulnerability due to the criteria to choose the representative years. This research aimed to compare such methodologies with a more detailed case study (standard method), taking into account the temporal variability of these estimates, the irrigation criteria, and the probability of occurrence of ETo and rainfall to determine water rights for sugarcane irrigation. Com esse propósito, foram estudadas duas faculdades públicas do estado do Rio de Janeiro. Abstract This article analyzes the respect for patient autonomy in dental teaching clinics as perceived by professors and students. Data were obtained by means of individual interviews and focus groups with senior students, teachers interviews and participant observation in two public state universities. Results showed that care provision at the analyzed educational institutions oftentimes does not include respect for patient autonomy. Resumo: Esta pesquisa, do tipo Estado da Arte, apresenta um recorte sobre temas e conteúdos abordados nos estudos sobre Educação em Astronomia produzidos em cursos de pós-graduação no Brasil, de 1973 a 2018. Foram recuperados e analisados 490 estudos, por meio da ferramenta metodológica Análise de Conteúdo. Identificados os mais abordados, correlaciona-se a abordagem com as diferentes etapas da Educação Básica, com o Ensino Superior e com a Educação Não Escolar. Abstract: This paper presents an overview of the themes and contents covered in Astronomy Education Research conducted in postgraduate programs in Brazil between 1973 and 2018. The researchers used Content Analysis to deal with 490 studies and identify the most discussed themes and their correlation with different stages of education, including Basic Education, Higher Education, and Non-School Education. The results showed that the Sun-Earth-Moon system is the most discussed theme in Elementary and Secondary Education, while Celestial Mechanics and gravity are more prevalent in Higher Education. Research on Non-School Education often does not focus on specific themes. The researchers discovered a central focus on teaching and learning processes, reflected in the emphasis on content and method. The study identifies trends and gaps that can contribute to developments in this field. Abstract Background: In this experimental protocol, we evaluated the immediate and delayed repair of the buccal branch of the facial nerve (BBFN) with heterologous fibrin biopolymer (HFB) as a coaptation medium and the use of photobiomodulation (PBM), performing functional and histomorphometric analysis of the BBFN and perioral muscles. Methods: Twenty-eight rats were divided into eight groups using the BBFN bilaterally (the left nerve was used for PBM), namely: G1 - control group, right BBFN (without injury); G2 - control group, left BBFN (without injury + PBM); G3 - Denervated right BBFN (neurotmesis); G4 - Denervated left BBFN (neurotmesis + PBM); G5 - Immediate repair of right BBFN (neurotmesis + HFB); G6 - Immediate repair of left BBFN (neurotmesis + HFB + PBM); G7 - Delayed repair of right BBFN (neurotmesis + HFB); G8 - Delayed repair of left BBFN (neurotmesis + HFB + PBM). Delayed repair occurred after two weeks of denervation. All animals were sacrificed after six weeks postoperatively. Results: In the parameters of the BBFN, we observed inferior results in the groups with delayed repair, in relation to the groups with immediate repair, with a significant difference (p < 0.05) in the diameter of the nerve fiber, the axon, and the thickness of the myelin sheath of the group with immediate repair with PBM compared to the other experimental groups. In measuring the muscle fiber area, groups G7 (826.4 ± 69.90) and G8 (836.7 ± 96.44) were similar to G5 (882.8 ± 70.51). In the functional analysis, the G7 (4.10 ± 0.07) and G8 (4.12 ± 0.08) groups presented normal parameters. Conclusion: We demonstrated that delayed repair of BBFN is possible with HFB, but with worse results compared to immediate repair, and that PBM has a positive influence on nerve regeneration results in immediate repair. RESUMO A erosão hídrica é uma das principais causas de degradação de solos e poluição dos recursos hídricos. Este trabalho teve como objetivo atualizar e avaliar a variação sazonal do índice de erosividade e do Índice de Fournier Modificado como ferramenta para prever a erosividade das chuvas para o estado de Rio Grande do Sul. Foram usadas as séries de dados de precipitação média mensal tendo como base as Normais Climatológicas do período de 1991 a 2020 de 112 estações pluviométricas. Com base em 16 equações de regressão formam estimados os valores dos Índices de Fournier Modificado (IFM) e do índice EI30, avaliando-se sua variação espacial e sazonal. ABSTRACT Water erosion is one of the main cause of soil degradation and the pollution of water resources. The aim of the present study is to update and evaluate the seasonal variation of the erosivity index and the Modified Fournier Index as a tool to predict rain erosivity for the state of Rio Grande do Sul. A series of monthly average rainfall data was used from 112 rainfall stations based on the Climatological Norms of the period between 1991 and 2020. Based on 16 regression equations, the values of the Modified Fournier Index (MFI) and the EI30 index were estimated, assessing their spatial and seasonal variation. Results show a strong seasonal variation with greater erosivity in the months of April, October and December. The EI30 varied between 3500 and 12500 MJ, ha-1 h-1 year-1. Abstract: The commercial classification of fruits organizes commercialization and promotes compliance. The aim was to propose classes for umbu fruits based on fresh mass.
