RESUMO Na agricultura de precisão a determinação de zonas de manejo dos atributos de solo e planta, é um processo complexo que demanda o conhecimento de muitas variáveis, o que dificulta o processo de gestão e tomada de decisão. Este estudo avaliou a variabilidade espacial da produtividade da cultura da soja e de atributos químicos do solo por meio de análise multivariada e geoestatística para a determinação de zonas de manejo específico em um Latossolo. A produtividade de soja e os atributos químicos do solo nas camadas 0-0.2 e 0.2-0.4 m de profundidade foram amostrados em 70 pontos de amostragem. Análises geoestatísticas e multivariadas foram então realizadas. As propriedades químicas do solo apresentaram maior variabilidade na profundidade de 0,2 a 0,4 m. Os parâmetros do semivariograma dos dados da análise de componentes principais (PCA) (PCA 1, PCA 2 e PCA 3) para ambas as profundidades foram mais homogêneos do que os dados originais. Os mapas de propriedades químicas do solo apresentaram alta similaridade com o mapa de produtividade da soja. A ACP explicou 65,34% (0 a 0,2 m) e 70,50% (0,2 a 0,4 m) da variabilidade dos dados, agrupando a produtividade da soja, matéria orgânica, pH, fósforo, potássio, cálcio, magnésio e sódio. A espacialização do PCA permitiu a definição das zonas de manejo indicadas pelo PCA 1, PCA 2 e PCA 3 para ambas as profundidades. O resultado indica que a área deve ser manejada utilizando diferentes estratégias de manejo da fertilidade do solo para aumentar a produtividade da soja.

ABSTRACT In precision agriculture, determining management zones for soil and plant attributes is a complex process that requires knowledge of several variables, which complicates management and decisionmaking processes. This study evaluated the spatial variability of soybean yield and soil chemical properties using geostatistical and multivariate analyses to define management zones in an Oxisol. The soybean yield and soil chemical properties between 0 to 0.2 and 0.2 to 0.4 m soil depths were sampled at 70 points. Geostatistical and multivariate analyses were then performed on these data. The soil chemical properties showed higher variability at 0.2 to 0.4 m soil depth. The semivariogram parameters of the principal component analysis (PCA) data (PCA 1, PCA 2, and PCA 3) for both depths were more homogeneous than the original data. The maps of soil chemical properties showed high similarity to the soybean yield map. The PCA explained 65.34% (0 to 0.2 m) and 70.50% (0.2 to 0.4 m) of data variability, grouping the soybean yield, organic matter, pH, phosphorous, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sodium. PCA spatialization allowed for the definition of management zones indicated by PCA 1, PCA 2, and PCA 3 for both depths. The result indicates that the area must be managed using different strategies of soil fertility management to increase soybean yield.

The formation of solid waste is a global challenge regarding environmental preservation. Due to the lifestyle of modern society, which aims to improve practicality, new products are constantly being released in the market and increasing the formation of waste. The decomposition of waste from various origins produces a dark liquid named leachate, which presents high rates of organic and inorganic compounds. The objective of this study was to assess the concentration of potentially toxic metals in the leachate collected from the Aurá dump. The concentrations of Cd, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were evaluated in leachate samples collected in a period of a year, covering two typical seasonal periods of the Amazon region with more and less rainfall. The leachate samples collected in the Aurá dump were determined in the Toxicology Laboratory of Instituto Evandro Chagas (IEC), by means of Plasma/Inductively Coupled Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). The Cr, Mn, and Pb metals analyzed in the slurry samples are in a concentration above the maximum limits specified by CONAMA Resolution No. 430/2011, causing significant environmental concerns.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as relações de escala de artrópodes do solo e da estrutura da vegetação de fitofisionomias de Cerrado. As parcelas experimentais foram alocadas em áreas com Cerrado denso (T1), Cerrado típico (T2) e Cerrado ralo (T3). A fauna edáfica foi coletada em 128 pontos, por meio de armadilhas de queda e a vegetação avaliada em subparcelas de 9 m2. Os dados foram avaliados por meio da estatística descritiva, geoestatística, análise multifractal e joint multifractal. Os artrópodes do solo e a estrutura de vegetação se ajustaram a um modelo geoestatístico, exceto, plantas arborescentes (T1), abundância de artrópodes (T2) e plantas arbóreas (T2), que apresentaram efeito pepita puro. As variáveis estudadas apresentaram diferentes graus de multifratalidade. Os gráficos da dimensão joint multifractal mostraram linhas circulares com altos valores de correlação conjunta para riqueza de artrópodes versus abundância dos estratos vegetais (r = -0,498), riqueza de artrópodes versus herbáceos (r = 0,323) e riqueza de artrópodes versus arbóreo (r = 0,451) em T1. A fauna do solo foi influenciada pela composição dos estratos arbóreos em maior ou menor grau. As parcelas com Cerrado denso (T1) e Cerrado ralo (T3) apresentaram a maior dependência espacial entre as amostras. A análise multifractal demonstrou que a parcela com Cerrado ralo (T3) foi o sistema com maior heterogeneidade de medida ao longo do suporte geométrico; enquanto a maior assimetria do espectro de singularidade foi descrita para a parcela com Cerrado denso (T1). A utilização de ferramentas de geoestatística e análise multifractal permitiu caracterizar as relações de escala entre as variáveis.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to assess the scale relationships of soil arthropods and the vegetation structure of Cerrado phytophysiognomies. The experimental plots were set in areas with dense Cerrado (T1), typical Cerrado (T2), and sparse Cerrado (T3). The edaphic fauna was collected at 128 points through pitfall traps, and the vegetation was evaluated in subplots of 9 m2. The data were evaluated using descriptive statistics, geostatistics, multifractal analysis, and joint multifractal analysis. The soil arthropods and vegetation structure were adjusted to a geostatistical model, except for arborescent plants (T1) and arthropod abundance and arboreal plants (T2), which showed a pure nugget effect. The studied variables showed different degrees of multifractality. The graphs of joint multifractal dimension showed circular lines with high values of joint correlation for the pairs of arthropod richness versus the abundance of plant strata (r = -0.498), arthropod richness versus herbaceous plants (r = 0.323), and arthropod richness versus arboreal plants (r = 0.451) at T1. The soil fauna was influenced by the composition of the plant strata. The plots with dense Cerrado (T1) and sparse Cerrado (T3) showed the greatest spatial dependence between the samples. The multifractal analysis showed that the plot with sparse Cerrado (T3) had the greatest heterogeneity of measurement along the geometric support. In contrast, the greatest asymmetry of the singularity spectrum was described for the plot with dense Cerrado (T1). The use of geostatistical and multifractal analysis tools enabled us to characterize the scale relationships between the variables.

RESUMO A cochonilha-rosada-do-hibisco, Maconellicoccus hirsutus (Green) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) é umapraga exótica que ameaça a produção de frutas, hortaliças e plantas ornamentais no Brasil. Por ser um inseto fitófago com ampla gama de hospedeiros, há uma demanda crescente por métodos de controle ecologicamente corretos e sustentáveis, como o controle biológico. Neste estudo foi avaliado parâmetros biológicos de Ceraeochrysa everes (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) alimentado com ninfas de 2º instar de M. hirsutus e ovos de Ephestia (Anagasta) kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). A duração dosestádios imaturos de C. everes foi maior quando o predador foialimentado com ninfas de 2° instar de M. hirsutus em comparação ao contReceived for publication inrole (E. kuehniella). A taxa de sobrevivência de imaturos de C. everes foi de 82,5 e 100% quando oferecidas ninfas de 2º instar de M. hirsutus e ovos de E. kuehniella, respectivamente. O tipo de recurso alimentar ofertado na fase larval afetou os períodos de pré-oviposição, oviposição, pós-oviposição e a longevidade de fêmeas de C. everes. Fêmeas de C. everes advindas de indivíduos imaturos alimentados com dieta exclusiva de ovos de E. kuehniella apresentaram maior oviposição, fecundidade (diária e total), fertilidade, período de pós-oviposição e longevidade. Conclui-se que C. everes possui capacidade de predação, desenvolvimento ereprodução tendo como recurso alimentar ninfas de 2º instar de M. hirsutus. Portanto, C. everes é uma promessa potencial para o controle de M. hirsutus.

ABSTRACT The invasive pink hibiscus mealybug, Maconellicoccus hirsutus (Green) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), is a pest that threatens the production of fruits, vegetable, and ornamental plants in Brazil. It is a phytophagous insect with a wide range of hosts; thus, there is an increasing demand for sustainable environmental-friendly control methods, such as biological control. This study aimed to investigate biological parameters of Ceraeochrysa everes (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) fed on 2nd instar nymphs of M. hirsutus and eggs of Ephestia (Anagasta) kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). The duration of the immature stages of C. everes was longer when the predator was fed on 2nd instar nymphs of M. hirsutus, compared to the control (E. kuehniella). The survival rate of immature C. everes was 82.5% and 100% when fed on 2nd instar nymphs of M. hirsutus and eggs of E. kuehniella, respectively. The type of food resource offered at the larval stage affected the pre-oviposition, oviposition, and post-oviposition periods and the longevity of C. everes females. Adult females C. everes from immature individuals fed an exclusive diet of E. kuehniella eggs had longer oviposition, fecundity (daily and total), fertility, and post-oviposition periods and longevity. Ceraeochrysa everes has the capacity for predation, development, and reproduction while having 2nd instar nymphs of M. hirsutus as food resource. Therefore, C. everes has a promising potential for controlling M. hirsutus.

RESUMO A comunidade edáfica é composta por diversos organismos que mantêm interações ecológicas nos ambientes, como fragmentação de serapilheira, ciclagem de nutrientes, modificações na estrutura do solo, além de reguladores de cadeia trófica. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a composição da fauna edáfica, os atributos físicos e químicos do solo em diferentes fisionomias de cerrado no Parque Estadual do Mirador (PEM). O estudo foi desenvolvido em duas formações de Cerrado (Cerrado Ralo e Cerrado Típico) no Parque Estadual do Mirador, onde foram instaladas 100 armadilhas pitfall. Os organismos edáficos foram triados, identificados em termos de ordens, subordens, subfamílias e família; a partir disso foram estimados os parâmetros abundância, riqueza, diversidade de Shannon e equitabilidade de Pielou. Um total de 4.149 indivíduos foram coletados nas duas parcelas experimentais. A parcela em Cerrado Típico apresentou maior riqueza taxonômica (25 grupos); e maior diversidade de Shannon (H’ = 1,65), enquanto a parcela em Cerrado Ralo apresentou 19 grupos edáficos e diversidade de Shannon igual a H’ = 1,51. A exploração fatorial explicou 84,43% dos dados originais do Cerrado Ralo e 90,84% dos dados do Cerrado Típico. Conclui-se, que a parcela em Cerrado Típico demonstrou maior diferença em termos de riqueza e abundância, decorrente das condições favoráveis à fauna edáfica como alto teor de matéria orgânica e maior cobertura vegetal.

ABSTRACT The edaphic community comprises several organisms that perform ecological functions in the environment, such as litter fragmentation, nutrient cycling, and modifications of soil structure, in addition to acting as food chain regulators. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the composition of the edaphic fauna and the physical and chemical attributes of soil in different physiognomies of Cerrado in the Parque Estadual do Mirador (PEM). The study was carried out in two Cerrado formations (Sparse Cerrado and Typical Cerrado) in PEM, where 100 pitfall traps were installed. The edaphic organisms were screened and identified in terms of orders, suborders, subfamilies, families, abundance, richness, Shannon diversity, and Pielou’s equitability. A total of 4,149 individuals were collected from two experimental plots. The plot in the Typical Cerrado showed greater taxonomic richness (25 groups) and greater Shannon diversity (H’ = 1.65), while the plot in Sparse Cerrado presented 19 edaphic groups and Shannon diversity equal to H’ = 1.51. The factorial exploration explained 84.43% of the original data from the Sparse Cerrado and 90.84% from the Typical Cerrado. It is concluded that the plot in the Typical Cerrado showed greater differences in terms of richness and abundance due to the more favorable conditions for soil fauna, such as a high content of organic material and greater vegetation cover.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine the multifractality of diversity indexes of edaphic fauna in areas with natural vegetation and in agricultural systems. Biological sampling was carried out in seven treatments (millet, maize, soybean, eucalyptus, preserved cerrado, disturbed cerrado and pasture), containing 130 pitfall traps, distributed in transects with 3 m of spacing between sampling points, totaling 390 m. The multifractal analysis was determined based on the moment method, where estimates such as the capacity dimensions, entropy and the correlation of the diversity indexes were calculated. The soybean area had greater Shannon diversity (2.69), however it had smaller abundance of individuals. The partition functions were adjusted with coefficient of determination > 0.90. The difference between D-10-D10, ranged from 0.080 to 1,707 for Pielou equitability in soybean cultivation, for richness in the area under the cultivation of eucalyptus. The singularity spectra expressed graphs with different degrees of heterogeneity for the soil fauna indexes, and the richness expressed the best structure. The area cultivated with soybean had a monofractal tendency, due to the homogeneous distribution of individuals of the edaphic fauna along the transect. The fractal analysis provided the description of patterns of variability that are not detected by classical methods.

RESUMO A resistência do solo à penetração (RP) é uma medida indireta do estado de compactação do solo. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar a RP em perfis verticais em uma área cultivada com cana-de-açúcar por meio de modelos multifractais para diferentes unidades de relevo. O experimento foi realizado em Latossolo Vermelho Amarelo textura argilosa, com 6.85 ha no município de Coelho Neto (Maranhão, Brasil), onde foram demarcados 60 pontos de amostragem. A área foi dividida em quatro unidades de relevo (Tipo A > 74 m; Tipo B de 71 a 74 m; Tipo C de 68 a 71 m e Tipo D de 65 a 68 m). A RP foi medida nos 60 pontos de amostragem utilizando um penetrômetro de impacto, e a RP determinada na camada de 0-0.60 m de profundidade a cada 0.01 m. A análise multifractal foi realizada considerando a propriedade de escala de cada perfil e tipificada o espectro de singularidade e de Rènyi estimados por meio do método do momento. A análise multifractal permitiu a identificação de padrões em diferentes escalas e com elevada heterogeneidade. O comportamento multifractal, foi representado pelo espectro de singularidade (α), versus f(α), e a dimensão generalizada (Dq). A análise multifractal permitiu a diferenciação entre os perfis das unidades de relevo (Tipos A, B, C e D), resultando em uma importante ferramenta para estudos da resistência do solo à penetração.

ABSTRACT Soil resistance to penetration (PR) is an indirect measure of the state of soil compaction. Thus, the objective of this study was to characterize PR in vertical profiles in an area cultivated with sugarcane using multifractal models for different relief units. The experiment was carried out in an Oxisol with a clay texture, with 6.85 ha in the municipality of Coelho Neto (Maranhão state, Brazil), where 60 sampling points were demarcated. The area was divided into four relief units (Type A > 74 m, Type B from 71 to 74 m, Type C from 68 to 71 m and Type D from 65 to 68 m). The PR was measured at the 60 sampling points using an impact penetrometer, and the PR determined in the 0-0.60 m depth layer every 0.01 m. The multifractal analysis was performed considering the scale property of each profile and typified the singularity and Rènyi spectra estimated using the current method. Multifractal analysis allowed the identification of patterns at different scales and with high heterogeneity. The multifractal behavior was represented by the singularity spectrum (α), versus f(α), and the generalized dimension (Dq). The multifractal analysis allowed the differentiation between the profiles of the relief units (Types A, B, C and D), resulting in an important tool for studies of soil resistance to penetration.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a variabilidade espacial da produtividade de soja, do estoque de carbono e de atributos físicos do solo por meio de técnicas multivariadas e de geoestatística. Os atributos foram determinados em um Latossolo Vermelho textura argilosa e coeso no município de Mata Roma (Maranhão, Brasil). Na área de estudo foram demarcados 70 pontos de amostragem, sendo avaliada a produtividade de soja e os atributos do solo nas camadas de 0-0,20 e 0,20-0,40 m de profundidade. Os dados foram analisados por meio de análise multivariada (ACP - Análise de Componentes Principais) e de ferramentas de geoestatística. A produtividade média de soja foi de 3370 kg ha-1. O semivariograma da produtividade, carbono orgânico (OC) e do estoque de carbono (Cst) na camada de 0-0,20 m se ajustaram ao modelo esférico. A ACP explicou 73.21% da estrutura da variância e covariância entre a produtividade e os atributos do solo na camada de 0-0.20 m [ACP 1 (26.89%), ACP 2 (24.10%) e ACP 3 (22.22%)] e 68.64% na camada de 0.20-0.40 m [ACP 1 (31.95%), ACP 2 (22.83%) e ACP 3 (13.85%)]. Os mapas de variabilidade espacial dos scores dos autovalores da ACP demonstraram que é possível a determinação de zonas de manejo utilizando a ACP 1 nas duas profundidades em estudo, todavia, com diferentes estratégias de manejo para cada uma das camadas.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial variability of soybean yield, carbon stock, and soil physical attributes using multivariate and geostatistical techniques. The attributes were determined in Oxisols samples with clayey and cohesive textures collected from the municipality of Mata Roma, Maranhão state, Brazil. In the study area, 70 sampling points were demarcated, and soybean yield and soil attributes were evaluated at soil depths of 0-0.20 and 0.20-0.40 m. Data were analysed using multivariate analyses (principal component analysis, PCA) and geostatistical tools. The mean soybean yield was 3,370 kg ha-1. The semivariogram of productivity, organic carbon (OC), and carbon stock (Cst) at the 0-0.20 m layer were adjusted to the spherical model. The PCA explained 73.21% of the variance and covariance structure between productivity and soil attributes at the 0-0.20 m layer [(PCA 1 (26.89%), PCA 2 (24.10%), and PCA 3 (22.22%)] and 68.64% at the 0.20-0.40 m layer [PCA 1 (31.95%), PCA 2 (22.83%), and PCA 3 (13.85%)]. The spatial variability maps of the PCA eigenvalue scores showed that it is possible to determine management zones using PCA 1 in the two studied depths; however, with different management strategies for each of the layers in this study.

Abstract: The reproductive biology of Macrodon ancylodon, a commercially important fish widely distributed along South America’s Atlantic coast, is described from 240 specimens collected in northeastern Brazil. Specimens ranged from 18.2 to 33.5 cm in length, exhibiting positive allometry. Total length at first sexual maturity was 21.13 cm. M. ancylodon has an asynchronous gonadal maturation and would be a batch spawner within a reproductive period. Total weight and length of females do not affect the relative fecundity values in this species. Analysis of the gonadosomatic index, condition factor and frequency of maturational stages shows that M. ancylodon was capable of reproducing throughout the year, despite the fact that spawning peaks were observed during November-December and August-September. The results are evidence that the study area is used by M. ancylodon for reproduction. The data will also be important for the development of stock management strategies.

Resumen: Se estudió la biología reproductiva de Macrodon ancylodon, pez de importancia comercial ampliamente distribuido a lo largo de la costa atlántica de América del Sur, a partir de 240 muestras colectadas en la costa de la provincia de Maranhão, noreste de Brasil. Los especímenes variaron de 18,2 cm a 33,5 cm, exhibiendo alometría positiva. La longitud total de la primera madurez sexual fue de 21,13 cm. M. ancylodon tiene una maduración gonadal asincrónica y sería un desovador parcial dentro de un período reproductivo. Tanto la longitud como el peso de las hembras no afectaron la fecundidad relativa. El análisis del índice gonadosomático, factor de condición y frecuencia de los estadios de maduración muestra que M. ancylodon es capaz de reproducirse durante todo el año, a pesar de que se observaron picos de desove durante noviembre-diciembre y agosto-septiembre. Los resultados evidencian que el área de estudio es utilizada por M. ancylodon para la reproducción. Los datos obtenidos serán de gran valor para el desarrollo de estrategias de gestión de los recursos pesqueros.

The feeding habits of Macrodon ancylodon were studied based on 280 specimens from the Maranhão coast, northeast Brazil. The diet showed a predominance of fishes, crustaceans and occasionally cephalopods. The diets of males and females were similar and difference was found in the proportion of prey items among juveniles, sub adults, and adults (P > 0.05). During rainy season the prey items were more diverse than dry season. In the dry season M. ancylodon feeds more Penaeidae (Penaeus sp. and Penaeus schmitti), Callinectes sp. and Engraulidae (Cetengraulis sp.). An increase of food spectrum was observed in rainy season, preyed upon 5 species of fish (Anchovia clupeoides, Cetengraulis edentulus, Macrodon ancylodon, Mugil curema and Sardinella brasiliensis), 3 species of Crustacea (Penaeus sp., Penaeus schmitti, Parapenaeus politus, and Callinectes sp.) and 2 Cephalopoda (Loligo sp. and Loligo plei). Differences in the ingestion of prey items were found during the year, where in the rainy season this species presented larger stomach contents. Cannibalism was encountered more intensively for mature fish.

Se estudiaron los hábitos alimenticios de la pescadilla real Macrodon ancylodon basado en 280 muestras en la costa de la provincia de Maranhão, noreste de Brasil. La dieta mostró un predominio de peces, crustáceos y ocasionalmente cefalópodos. Las dietas de los machos y hembras fueron similares y se encontraron diferencias en la proporción de presas entre los juveniles, subadultos y adultos. Durante la temporada de lluvias las presas fueron más diversas que en la temporada seca. En la estación seca M. ancylodon se alimenta más de Penaeidae (Penaeus sp. y Penaeus schmitti), Callinectes sp. y Engraulidae (Cetengraulis sp.). Se observó un aumento del espectro de alimentos en la temporada de lluvias, con presas de 5 especies de peces (Anchovia clupeoides, Cetengraulis edentulus, Macrodon ancylodon, Mugil curema y Sardinella brasiliensis), 3 especies de crustáceos (Penaeus schmitti, Parapenaeus politus y Callinectes sp.) y 2 cefalópodos (Loligo sp. y Loligo plei). Las diferencias en la ingestión de presas se encontraron durante el año, en la estación de lluvia, donde los individuos de esta especie presentaron mayores contenidos estomacales. El canibalismo se encontró con mayor intensidad para los peces maduros.

Espécies de Mansoa são denominadas de "cipó-d'alho", por exalarem odor de alho das partes vegetativas e reprodutivas. Contudo, dados sobre morfologia e distribuição das estruturas secretoras presentes em Mansoa são escassos e ausentes para M. standleyi. O presente trabalho objetivou caracterizar a ocorrência e morfologia das estruturas secretoras do eixo vegetativo aéreo de M. standleyi. Para tanto, amostras da lâmina foliolar e de regiões nodais foram fixadas e submetidas às técnicas histológicas e de microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Testes histoquímicos, com os respectivos controles foram aplicados nas estruturas secretoras em fase secretora. Indivíduos de formigas e moscas, que visitavam a espécie foram amostrados, preservados e identificados por entomólogo. As estruturas secretoras do eixo vegetativo aéreo de M. standleyi estão representadas por tricomas glandulares dos tipos pateliformes e peltados. Todos com desenvolvimento assincrônico e presentes nas regiões nodais e lâmina foliolar, principalmente nas partes mais jovens. Nas regiões nodais, os tricomas formam um complexo secretor e, na lâmina foliolar, estão dispersos. As análises histoquímicas revelaram que os tricomas pateliformes são de fato nectários extraflorais e que os tricomas peltados, apresentam uma fração de alcaloides. Os visitantes das glândulas nodais correspondem a formigas Crematogaster (Formicidae) e Ectatomma brunea (Vespoidea, Formicidae) e moscas Oxysarcodexia (Sarcophagidae, subfamília Utitidae (Ulidiidae). Mansoa standleyi possui as estruturas secretoras do eixo vegetativo aéreo semelhantes às citadas pela literatura para Bignoniaceae, sendo esta a primeira vez, que um nectário extrafloral é descrito para a espécie.

Species of Mansoa are called "cipó-d'alho" because of the smell of garlic that wafts from their vegetative and reproductive parts. Since data on the morphology and occurrence of their secretory structures are scarce and even absent for M. standleyi, the present work characterizes the distribution and morphology of such structures in the vegetative aerial axis of the latter. To do so, samples of the leaf blade and of nodal regions were fixed and examined using histological and scanning electron microscope techniques. Histochemical tests with appropriate controls were carried out on the secretory structures during the secretory phase. Fly and ant individuals that visit the species were sampled, preserved and identified by an entomologist. The secretory structures of the vegetative aerial axis of M. standleyi are peltate and patelliform glandular trichomes. All develop asynchronously and are present in the nodal regions and leaf blade, mainly in their youngest parts. Trichomes form a secretory complex in the nodal regions while they are scattered in the leaf blade. Histochemical analyses revealed that the cupulate and patelliform trichomes are extrafloral nectaries and that the peltate ones present an alkaloid fraction. The visitors of the nodal glands are ants Crematogaster (Formicidae) and Ectatomma brunea (Vespoidea, Formicidae) and flies Oxysarcodexia (Sarcophagidae, subfamily Utitidae [Ulidiidae]). The secretory structures of the vegetative aerial axis of Mansoa standleyi are similar to those reported for Bignoniaceae. An extrafloral nectary is described for M. standleyi for the first time.

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are rare lysosomal disorders caused by the deficiency of specific lysosomal enzymes responsible for glycosaminoglycan (GAG) degradation. Enzyme Replacement Therapy (ERT) has been shown to reduce accumulation and urinary excretion of GAG, and to improve some of the patients' clinical signs. We studied biochemical and molecular characteristics of nine MPS patients (two MPS I, four MPS II and three MPS VI) undergoing ERT in northern Brazil. The responsiveness of ERT was evaluated through urinary GAG excretion measurements. Patients were screened for eight common MPS mutations, using PCR, restriction enzyme tests and direct sequencing. Two MPS I patients had the previously reported mutation p.P533R. In the MPS II patients, mutation analysis identified the mutation p.R468W, and in the MPS VI patients, polymorphisms p.V358M and p.V376M were also found. After 48 weeks of ERT, biochemical analysis showed a significantly decreased total urinary GAG excretion in patients with MPS I (p < 0.01) and MPS VI (p < 0.01). Our findings demonstrate the effect of ERT on urinary GAG excretion and suggest the adoption of a screening strategy for genotyping MPS patients living far from the main reference centers.

Analisar e compreender o pensamento e a ação das pessoas que referem dores nas costas tornam-se atos relevantes, no momento em que podem fazer parte da explicação e da cura de sua doença. Trata-se de estudo qualitativo, com enfoque antropológico, realizado nos meses de janeiro a fevereiro de 2005, com mulheres na faixa etária entre 45 a 58 anos, com dores crônicas nas costas, que participavam de um grupo de apoio à saúde de mulheres no climatério numa instituição de ensino em Fortaleza, Ceará. Foram realizadas nove (9) entrevistas etnográficas em profundidade, explorando suas perturbações, estratégias de enfrentamento, noção de qualidade de vida e barreiras para atingi-la, além de aspectos relacionados às dores na coluna. Observou-se que a dor envolve problemas e soluções de ordem cultural, psicoespiritual, socioeconômica, política e educacional. Apesar de os informantes terem baixo nível de escolaridade, apresentaram uma visão holística de saúde, mecanismos de enfrentamento e busca da cura. Atividades relacionadas ao seu dia-a-dia podem ser traduzidas como risco cultural e por isso precisam ser consideradas. Conclui-se que há necessidade de rever o contexto sociocultural, econômico, político e ambiental para desenvolver ações educativas na promoção da saúde.

Analyzing and understanding people's conceptions and actions regarding back pain is relevant since they can be part of the disease's explanation and cure. The nature of this study is qualitative with an anthropological focus. It was carried out from January to February, 2005 with nine women between 45 and 58 years of age with chronic back pains who participated in a health support group for menopausal women in a teaching institution in Fortaleza, Ceará. Nine (9) in-depth ethnographic interviews were conducted with key informants exploring their problems, worries, coping strategies, their notion of quality of life and barriers to achieving this, especially as related to back pain. It was observed that back pain encompasses problems and solutions ranging from psychological, socioeconomic and political to educational aspects. Despite informants' low educational levels, they present a holistic view of health and a rich coping and cure-seeking experience. Because daily life activities can be considered as cultural risk, they need to be considered. It is, thus, necessary to consider the socio-cultural, economic, political and environmental context, in order to develop educational actions to promote health.

Com o objetivo de avaliar a freqüência e distribuição de parasitóides associados a larvas da lagarta do cartucho, Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith), foram realizadas amostragens em campos comerciais da cultura do milho (Zea mays), nos anos agrícolas 1991/92 (duas regiões) e 1992/93 (cinco regiões). Em cada local amostrado foram coletadas aproximadamente 100 larvas, em plantas com 20 a 40 dias após a emergência. As larvas foram criadas em laboratório a 25 ± 2ºC, UR 50 - 60%, fotoperíodo de 14 horas e observadas diariamente. Os parasitóides mais freqüentes foram: Chelonus texanus (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Diadegma sp. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) e Archytas incertus (Macquart) (Diptera: Tachinidae). Foi observado que o parasitismo total foi de 10,3% em 1991/92 e 13,8% em 1992/93. Os parasitóides Diptera apresentaram preferência pela fase de pupa da lagarta do cartucho (76,5%), nos dois anos agrícolas. Os parasitóides Hymenoptera tiveram preferência por larvas de 3º e 4º ínstares (41,9 e 45,2%), no ano agrícola 1991/92 e de 2º e 3º ínstares (39,1 e 43,5%), no ano agrícola 1992/93.

The frequency and distribution of parasitoids associated with fall armyworm larvae, Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith), was observed in commercial maize (Zea mays) fields, in the 1991/92 and 1992/93 seasons in the Triangulo Mineiro region, MG, Brazil. Two regions in the 1991/92 season and five regions in the 1992/93 season were chosen. In each farm 100 larvae were collected in plants with 20 to 40 days after emergence. Larvae were reared in the laboratory at 25 ± 2ºC, 50 - 60% RH, 14 h - photoperiod and observed daily. The parasitoids more frequently observed were: Chelonus texanus (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Diadegma sp. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), and Archytas incertus (Macquart) (Diptera: Tachinidae). The total parasitism ranged from 10,3% in 1991/92 to 13,8% in 1992/93. Dipteran parasitoids were more prevalent on fall armyworm pupae (76,5%), in 1991/92 and 1992/93. In 1991/92 season the hymenopteran parasitoids were more prevalent on the 3rd and 4th instars larvae (41,9 and 45,2%, respectively), and in 1992/93 on the 2nd and 3rd instars larvae (39,1 and 43,5%, respectively).
