Abstract Introduction: Multicenter research initiatives in Brazilian dialysis centers are scarce. We described the recruitment and implementation phases of the SARC-HD study, aimed at investigating sarcopenia and its impact on adverse clinical outcomes. Methods: The SARC-HD is a cohort study being conducted with patients on hemodialysis in Brazil. The recruitment phase was defined as the period from the invitation to the center until the start of patient enrollment, whereas the implementation phase lasted from then until the completion of enrollment and baseline data collection. Upon implementation, a structured questionnaire was distributed to collect feedback from principal investigators. Results: 21 centers from three Brazilian regions consented to participate, with two dropping out. Ten principal investigators oversaw the 19 sites. Nine centers (47%) were funded entirely by health insurance companies. A total of 1525 patients were screened for eligibility and 1008 were enrolled, with a 66.1% recruitment rate. Recruitment and baseline data collection took 12 [interquartile range: 5–15] weeks. Qualitative content analysis identified barriers such as a lack of infrastructure and logistics for research. Facilitators included the management and organization of the steering committee. Data collection challenges were mainly reported with the subjective 7-point global assessment and the international physical activity questionnaire. The main challenge for the ongoing maintenance phase will be the lack of standardized information in electronic health records. Conclusions: The recruitment and implementation phases of the multicenter SARC-HD study were feasible. Barriers and facilitators identified by principal investigators may help future multicenter initiatives to integrate research-related tasks into clinical routine, facilitating successful experiences. Resumo Introdução: Pesquisa multicêntrica em centros de diálise brasileiros são escassas. Descrevemos as fases de recrutamento e implementação do estudo SARC-HD, visando investigar a sarcopenia e seu impacto em desfechos clínicos adversos. The present work aims to extract and test cashew nut peel oil as a natural antioxidant in the oxidative stabilization of biodiesel. Therefore, determinations of the ideal time of Soxhlet and thermal extractions, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses, and evaluation of the oxidative stability by Rancimat method were carried out. FTIR analyses revealed that the 3rd cycle of extraction was sufficient to extract all the oil, with an average yield of 30.0%. For the thermal extraction of the laboratory technical cashew nut peel oil, the best extraction, based on statistical analysis, was 60 min, yielding 20.0%. The FTIR analysis of the extracted cashew nut peel oil showed characteristic peaks of phenolic groups and organic acids, showing differences in the intensities of the absorption bands. The oxidative stability showed induction period of 8 h 40 min for the hydraulic press extraction, 10 h 35 min for the Soxhlet extraction, and 10 h 65 min for the industrial technical extraction of the cashew nut peel oil. All values were below the 12-h limit established by the National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP). The technical cashew nut peel oil extracted in the laboratory presented an induction period of 11 h 12 min, close to that recommended by ANP, proving to be a promising natural antioxidant. Fruits of Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi were investigated. A fast and efficient method for the simultaneous determination of 11 polyphenolic substances by high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) was applied. Limits of quantification ranged between 0.78 and 3.14 mg L-1. High concentrations of kaempferol were found. An exploratory evaluation was performed using principal component analysis (PCA) for fruit origin differentiation. This work aimed to incorporate the active compounds of the jambolan leaf in sunflower seed oil, in order to increase the nutritional quality of the oil. Food contamination is a public health problem, and the search for natural additives to increase food stability and safety is challenging. This research aimed to study nanoemulsions produced with coriander essential oil and kefiran, an exopolysaccharide extracted from kefir grains. The emergence of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) stands for being the most serious epidemic (so far) of the 21st century. However, only a few computational studies have investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying the neutralization of the spike protein by antibodies of different classes. Hence, bioinformatic methods were employed to unravel the factors contributing to the remarkable neutralization capacity exhibited by specific antibodies. Initially, crystallographic structures of IgA monomeric / dimeric, IgG, and IgM antibodies binding with the receptor-binding domain region of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein were retrieved. Subsequently, rigid molecular docking and molecular dynamic simulations were performed over 100 ns with explicit water solvation. Bredemeyera Willd. is a genus of the Polygalaceae family, occurring in Brazil. This research aims to evaluate the phytochemical and antifungal potential, in vitro and in silico, of Bredemeyera brevifolia extracts. The identification of fatty acids by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and their quantification by gas chromatography-flame ionization detector showed that palmitic (36.55 mg g−1), margaric (3.66 mg g−1), linolelaidic (108.82 mg g−1), oleic (7.86 mg g−1), stearic (41.11 mg g−1), dihomo-γ-linolenic (85.48 mg g−1), and arachidic (209.00 mg g−1) acids are present in the hexane extract. From the chloroform extract, 1-hydroxy-3,7-dimethoxyxanthone was isolated and identified. RESUMO O ácido ascórbico é um composto não-enzimático com ação antioxidante na desintoxicação de espécies reativas de oxigênio em plantas submetidas a condições de estresses abióticos. Paluma sob diferentes níveis de reposição de água e aplicação foliar de ácido ascórbico na fase pós-enxertia. ABSTRACT Ascorbic acid is a non-enzymatic compound with antioxidant action in the detoxification of reactive oxygen species in plants subjected to abiotic stress conditions. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate gas exchange, photochemical efficiency, and growth of guava cv. Paluma under water replacement levels and foliar application of ascorbic acid in the post-grafting phase. The experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions, at the Center of Technology and Natural Resources, at the Federal University of Campina Grande, in Paraíba, PB, Brazil. A randomized block experimental design was used, in a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement, whose treatments resulted from the combination of two factors: two levels of irrigation water (50 and 100% of actual evapotranspiration - ETr) and four concentrations of ascorbic acid - AsA (0, 30, 60, and 90 mM), with three repetitions. RESUMO A mamoneira é uma cultura conhecida como tolerante à seca, contudo, assim como outras culturas, apresenta reduções na produtividade sob condições de baixa disponibilidade hídrica. Sendo assim, o objetivo com o presente estudo foi avaliar as trocas gasosas foliares, os índices de clorofila e a produtividade de cultivares de mamoneira submetidas a dois ambientes hídricos contrastantes no semiárido baiano. Doze cultivares de mamona foram plantadas em parcela subdividida em blocos casualizados, onde na parcela foi alocado os ambientes hídricos contrastante, o ambiente 1 foi composto por irrigação próxima a capacidade de campo e o ambiente 2 com cerca de 30% da capacidade de campo. Foram avaliadas a produtividade, trocas gasosas foliares e teores de clorofila. As análises estatísticas foram realizadas por meio da análise bayesiana com uma variante da Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (HMC) para a obtenção das cadeias ocultas de Markov via Monte Carlo (MCMC). As MCMC foram convergentes e bem misturadas. No ambiente 2 as cultivares EBDA MPA 34, EBDA 17 e IAC 2028 apresentaram produtividade acima de 1.700 kg ha-1. ABSTRACT Castor bean is a crop known to be drought tolerant, but like other crops, it shows reductions in yield under conditions of low water availability. Therefore, the objective whit this study was to evaluate leaf gas exchange, chlorophyll indices and yield of castor bean cultivars subjected to two contrasting water environments in the semi-arid region of Bahia, Brazil. Twelve castor bean cultivars were planted in a split-plot randomized block design, with the plot allocated to the contrasting water environments. Environment 1 was composed of irrigation close to field capacity, and environment 2 had about 30% of field capacity. Yield, leaf gas exchange, and chlorophyll content were evaluated. Statistical analyses were performed using Bayesian analysis with a variant of Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (HMC) to obtain Markov chains via Monte Carlo (MCMC). The MCMC were convergent and well mixed. In environment 2, the cultivars EBDA MPA 34, EBDA 17, and IAC 2028 showed yield above 1,700 kg ha-1. Cultivar IAC 226 showed an increase of 9.98% in its yield in environment 2. RESUMO A ocorrência de fontes hídricas com concentrações elevadas de sais no semiárido do Nordeste brasileiro limita a expansão da agricultura irrigada. Dessa forma, é de extrema importância a busca por estratégias capazes de amenizar os efeitos do estresse salino nas plantas. Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar os efeitos da aplicação foliar de ácido salicílico na indução de tolerância em mudas de goiabeira irrigadas com águas de distintas composições catiônicas da água. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida sob condições de casa de vegetação, utilizando o delineamento de blocos casualizados em arranjo fatorial 5 × 5, sendo cinco composições catiônicas da água de irrigação (S1 - Testemunha água de abastecimento; S2 - Na++Ca2++Mg2+; S3 - Na++Ca2+; S4 - Ca2++Mg2+ e S5 - Na++Mg2+), de modo a se ter uma proporção equivalente de 7:2:1, entre Na++Ca2++Mg2+ e de 1:1 entre outras combinações, respectivamente, mantendo condutividade elétrica - CEa de 3.0 dS m-1 e cinco concentrações de ácido salicílico (0; 0,8; 1,6; 2,4 e 3,2 mM) com 3 repetições e duas plantas por parcelas. Resumo A esporotricose é uma micose subaguda a crônica causada por espécies do gênero Sporothrix. A forma linfocutânea predomina na maioria dos casos, porém indivíduos imunocomprometidos podem apresentar variantes disseminadas. Embora mais prevalente em adultos, sua ocorrência em lactentes é um fenômeno raro, com fatores de risco e aspectos epidemiológicos pouco estudados. Descrevemos um caso de infecção por esporotricose em criança de 9 meses, que se manifestou por dois nódulos de crescimento progressivo, de consistência mole, localizados nas regiões cervical direita e pré-auricular, associados a uma deterioração na condição geral e febre ao longo de um mês. Apesar de múltiplos tratamentos com antibióticos, não houve melhora das lesões. A cultura do material aspirado de um dos nódulos revelou Sporothrix. O paciente foi então tratado com itraconazol oral, levando à regressão das lesões em 2 meses. A identificação do agente de transmissão neste caso não foi possível. Este relato visa ampliar a compreensão da manifestação da esporotricose em lactentes e fornecer informações valiosas para o aprimoramento de estratégias específicas de prevenção, diagnóstico e tratamento para esse grupo particular de pacientes dermatológicos.

Abstract Sporotrichosis is a subacute to chronic mycosis caused by species of the genus Sporothrix. While the lymphocutaneous form predominates in most cases, immunocompromised individuals may present with disseminated variants. It is more prevalent in adults and rare in infants, with poorly studied risk factors and epidemiological aspects in this age group. We describe a case of sporotrichosis infection in a 9-month-old child, presenting with two progressively growing nodules, soft in consistency, located in the right cervical and pre-auricular regions, associated with a decline in general condition and fever over a month’s duration. Despite multiple oral antibiotics, there was no lesional improvement. Aspiration of one of the nodules, and culture of the secretion revealed Sporothrix. The patient was then treated with oral itraconazole, leading to regression of the lesions within 2 months. The identification of the transmission agent in this case was not possible. This report aims to broaden the understanding of sporotrichosis manifestation in infants and to provide valuable insights for the enhancement of specific preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic strategies for this age group of dermatological patients.

RESUMO Resíduos gerados pela produção de cana-de-açúcar como o biochar, proveniente da queima do bagaço podem ser utilizados como fonte de fertilizante, podendo incrementar a produção de matéria seca de forrageira, bem como, dos atributos químicos do solo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a utilização de biochar da queima do bagaço da cana-de-açúcar e da adubação mineral e associação de ambos, na produtividade de matéria seca de Urochloa decumbens, e nos atributos químicos do solo. O delineamento utilizado foi em blocos casualizados, composto por oito tratamentos, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram: T1- adubação mineral; T2- adubação com calcário + fertilizante mineral; T3- calagem; T4- biochar; T5- biochar + adubação mineral; T6- calagem + biochar; T7- duas vezes a dose com biochar e T8- controle. ABSTRACT Residues generated in sugarcane production such as biochar, originated from bagasse burning, are used as a fertilizer source, which can increase forage dry matter yield, as well as improving soil chemical attributes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of using biochar from sugarcane bagasse burning and mineral fertilization, as well as their association, on the dry matter yield of Urochloa decumbens and on the chemical attributes of the soil. The design was randomized blocks, which consisted of eight treatments and four blocks. The treatments were: T1- mineral fertilization; T2- fertilization with limestone plus mineral fertilizer; T3- liming; T4- biochar; T5- biochar plus mineral fertilizer; T6- liming plus biochar; T7- double fertilization with biochar and T8- control. RESUMO Evitar a ocorrência de eventos hidrológicos extremos ultrapassa as habilidades atuais da humanidade. Todavia, a utilização de ferramentas adequadas para estimar a probabilidade associada a diferentes valores de variáveis hidrológicas, a exemplo das chuvas intensas, pode auxiliar na atenuação dos danos sociais e ambientais. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a hipótese de que os registros de chuvas máximas, em diferentes intervalores de duração, nas três principais estações pluviométricas do estado do Acre, ajustam-se à distribuição log-normal de dois parâmetros (LN2) e, com isso, avaliar os eventos de chuvas intensas, com base na associação entre a duração da chuva e o período de retorno. As equações foram conformadas ao modelo clássico do modelo LN2 pelo método da máxima verossimilhança, uma vez atendido o pressuposto basal da estacionariedade pelo teste de Mann-Kendall. However, using adequate tools to estimate the probability associated with different values of hydrological variables, such as heavy rainfall, can help mitigate social and environmental damage. This study aimed to verify the hypothesis that the records of maximum rainfall, at different intervals of duration, in the three main rainfall stations in the state of Acre fit the log-normal distribution of two parameters (LN2) and, therefore, to evaluate the events of heavy rainfalls, based on the association between the duration of the rain and the return period. RESUMO A alface (Lactuca sativa) é a hortaliça folhosa de maior importância econômica no Brasil, sendo o tipo crespa a mais popular entre os produtores. Entretanto, em regiões de clima quente, a alface apresenta limitações de produção devido ao pendoamento precoce, exigindo o conhecimento do comportamento das cultivares disponíveis no mercado. Assim, o objetivo do presente estudo foi caracterizar o desempenho de cultivares de alface crespa quanto aos aspectos produtivos, fisiológicos e de qualidade pós-colheita, cultivadas em condições de cultivo hidropônico e alta temperatura. O ensaio foi conduzido em condição de casa de vegetação, sendo as plantas cultivadas em sistema hidropônico tipo DFT. A temperatura média durante o experimento foi de 30,33 °C. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado com nove tratamentos (Veneranda, Cristina, Olinda, Mônica, Cinderela, Grand Rapids, Itapuã Super, Crocantela e Simpson Black Seed) e quatro repetições. ABSTRACT Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is the most economically important leafy vegetable in Brazil, with the crisp type being the most popular among producers. However, in regions with hot climates, lettuce has production limitations due to bolting, requiring knowledge on the behavior of cultivars available on the market. Thus, the objective of the present study was to characterize the performance of crisp lettuce cultivars in terms of their productive, physiological, and postharvest quality aspects when grown under hydroponic cultivation and high temperature conditions. The assay was performed in a greenhouse and the plants were grown in a hydroponic system of DFT type. The average temperature during the experiment was 30.33 °C. O uso de bactérias solubilizadoras de fertilizantes pode mitigar o estresse salino. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as trocas gasosas, o crescimento e a eficiência do uso da água da cultura do amendoim irrigado com água salobra sob adubação fosfatada e inoculada com bactérias do gênero Bacillus sp. O delineamento experimental utilizado neste estudo foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 4 × 2 × 2, com 5 repetições, referente às formas de adubação (F1 - 0% fósforo, F2 - 50% fósforo, F3 - 100% fósforo e F4 - bovino biofertilizante), presença e ausência do inoculante e dois níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação (CEa - 0.3 e 4.0 dS m-1). ABSTRACT Peanut (Arachis hypogaea) is an important agricultural crop in Brazil, considered one of the most important oilseed crops cultivated. The use of fertilizer-solubilizing bacteria can mitigate salt stress. The objective of this study was to evaluate the gas exchange, growth, and water use efficiency of the peanut crop irrigated with brackish water under phosphate fertilization and inoculated with bacteria of the genus Bacillus sp. The experimental design used in this study was completely randomized, in a 4 × 2 × 2 factorial scheme, with 5 replicates, referring to the forms of fertilization (F1 - 0% phosphorus, F2 - 50% phosphorus, F3 - 100% phosphorus, and F4 - bovine biofertilizer), presence and absence of the inoculant and two levels of electrical conductivity of the irrigation water (ECw - 0.3 and 4.0 dS m-1).
