RESUMO Embora o zinco (Zn) seja um micronutriente, quantidades excessivas no solo podem causar efeitos tóxicos às plantas. Fertilizantes, materiais calcários, pesticidas e fungicidas adicionados de Zn têm contribuído para aumentar a concentração deste elemento nos solos agrícolas. Dessa forma, é necessário encontrar espécies de plantas tolerantes ao Zn para serem adequadamente utilizadas em programas de restauração de solos degradados. Assim, o presente estudo tem como objetivo investigar a influência de diferentes concentrações de Zn nas variáveis fotossintéticas, na atividade antioxidante e no crescimento de mudas de I. marginata e A. edulis para determinar seu potencial para serem utilizadas como espécies fitorremediadoras. O experimento foi instalado em esquema fatorial 2×5, sendo o primeiro fator duas espécies (Allophylus edulis e Inga marginata), e o segundo fator: cinco concentrações de Zn (2, 75, 150, 225 e 300μM), com três repetições por tratamento. Cada unidade amostral foi constituída por um vaso com cinco plantas. Foram avaliadas variáveis fotossintéticas, morfológicas da parte aérea e do sistema radicular, fluorescência da clorofila a, pigmentos fotossintéticos, atividade de enzimas antioxidantes, peroxidação lipídica, concentração de peróxido de hidrogênio e Zn acumulado nas raízes e na parte aérea. O estresse por Zn ativou um eficiente sistema antioxidante, que reduziu o dano oxidativo nas folhas de ambas as espécies; consequentemente, não diminuiu a produção de biomassa aérea em mudas de Inga marginata e Allophylus edulis. O alto acúmulo de Zn nos tecidos vegetais e a falta de efeitos negativos na parte aérea de Inga marginata e Allophylus edulis sugeriram que essas espécies de plantas são tolerantes ao Zn e podem ser indicadas para fins de fitorremediação de solos poluídos com Zn. ABSTRACT Although zinc (Zn) is a micronutrient, excessive amounts in the soil can have toxic effects on plants. Fertilizers, limestone materials, pesticides, and fungicides added with Zn have contributed to increasing the concentration of this element in agricultural soils. Accordingly, it is necessary to find Zn-tolerant plant species to be properly used in degraded soil restoration programs. Thus, the current study aims to investigate the influence of different Zn concentrations on photosynthetic variables, antioxidant activity, and growth of I. marginata and A. edulis seedlings to determine their potential to be used as phytoremediation species. The experiment was installed in a 2×5 factorial scheme, with the first factor being two species (Allophylus edulis and Inga marginata), and the second factor: five concentrations of Zn (2, 75, 150, 225, and 300 μM), with three replications per treatment. Each sampling unit consisted of a pot with five plants. Photosynthetic, morphological variables of the shoot and root systems, chlorophyll a fluorescence, photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant enzyme activity, lipid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide concentration, and Zn accumulated in the roots and shoot were evaluated. Zn stress has activated an efficient antioxidant system, which reduced oxidative damage in the leaves of both species; consequently, it did not decrease shoot biomass production in Inga marginata and Allophylus edulis seedlings. High Zn accumulation in plant tissues and lack of negative effects on Inga marginata and Allophylus edulis shoot have suggested that these plant species are tolerant to Zn and may be indicated for Zn-polluted soil phytoremediation purposes. Resumo O cádmio (Cd) é um metal pesado nocivo capaz de poluir a água e o solo. A fitorremediação ligada a elementos benéficos para o desenvolvimento vegetal é uma estratégia para amenizar esse problema. O silício (Si) tem mostrado potencial para neutralizar estresses bióticos e abióticos em plantas, principalmente aqueles causados por metais pesados. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos do Si sobre a toxicidade do Cd no crescimento, na atividade fotossintética e no estresse oxidativo em mudas de Enterolobium contortisiliquum. O experimento constou de um delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições. Além de um tratamento controle, as seguintes combinações de Cd e Si foram adicionadas à solução nutritiva completa: 1,5 mM de Si; Si 3,0 mM; 1,5 mM de Si + 100 μM de Cd; 3,0 mM de Si + 100 μM de Cd; 100 μM Cd. Cada unidade amostrai consistiu de uma bandeja contendo 16 plantas. Os resultados mostraram que o Si promoveu a atividade fotossintética, aumentou a clorofila total e diminuiu a peroxidação lipídica da parte aérea na presença de Cd. As concentrações de 1.5 e 3.0 Si mM de silício podem ser consideradas adequadas para amenizar os efeitos da toxicidade de cádmio em mudas de Enterolobium contortisiliquum. Além disso, a ausência de diferenças significativas no peso seco da parte aérea e da raiz entre os tratamentos e baixo teor de peroxidação nas raízes sugerem que E. contortisiliquum é tolerante ao cádmio. Abstract Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal that may bring about harmful pollution of water and soil. Phytoremediation involving elements beneficial for plant development is a strategy to alleviate this problem. Silicon (Si) has shown potential in neutralizing biotic and abiotic stresses in plants, especially those caused by heavy metals. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate whether Si could mitigate the effects of Cd toxicity on growth, photosynthetic activity, and oxidative stress in seedlings of Enterolobium contortisiliquum. The experiment consisted of a completely randomized design with four replications. In addition to a control treatment, the following amounts of Cd, Si, and combinations were added to the complete nutrient solution: 1.5 mM Si; 3.0 mM Si; 1.5 mM Si + 100 μM Cd; 3.0 mM Si + 100 mM Cd; 100 mM Cd. Each sampling unit consisted of a tray containing 16 plants. Silicon concentrations of 1.5 and 3.0 Si mM were adequate to mitigate the effects of cadmium toxicity on Enterolobium contortisiliquum seedlings. The results showed that Si promoted photosynthetic activity, increased total chlorophyll, and decreased shoot lipid peroxidation in the presence of Cd. Furthermore, the lack of significant differences in shoot and root dry weight among treatments and low peroxidation content in roots suggest that E. contortisiliquum is tolerant to cadmium. ABSTRACT Background: Domestic pigeons carry pathogens in their droppings, posing a potential public health problem. Methods: The phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial resistances of Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecium in the feces of urban pigeons near hospitals with intensive care units were measured. Results: Twenty-nine samples showed Enterococcus growth, whereas one was positive for S. aureus. The S. aureus isolate was sensitive to the antibiotics tested via antibiogram, however resistance genes were identified. E. faecium isolates showed phenotypic resistance to gentamicin, erythromycin, and ciprofloxacin. Conclusions: Antimicrobial profiles harmful to health were demonstrated in bacterial pathogens isolated from the external environment of hospitals.

Abstract Background Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis are gram-positive bacterial pathogens and the causative agents of leprosy in humans across the world. The elimination of leprosy cannot be achieved by multidrug therapy alone, and highlights the need for new tools and drugs to prevent the emergence of new resistant strains. Methods In this study, our contribution includes the prediction of vaccine targets and new putative drugs against leprosy, using reverse vaccinology and subtractive genomics. Six strains of Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis (4 and 2 strains, respectively) were used for comparison taking Mycobacterium leprae strain TN as the reference genome. Briefly, we used a combined reverse vaccinology and subtractive genomics approach. Results As a result, we identified 12 common putative antigenic proteins as vaccine targets and three common drug targets against Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis. Furthermore, the docking analysis using 28 natural compounds with three drug targets was done. Conclusions The bis-naphthoquinone compound Diospyrin (CID 308140) obtained from indigenous plant Diospyros spp. showed the most favored binding affinity against predicted drug targets, which can be a candidate therapeutic target in the future against leprosy.

RESUMO Usinas nucleares são projetadas com sistemas dedicados a oferecer um alto grau de proteção aos seus trabalhadores, à população e ao meio ambiente. Entre os níveis de proteção da população e do meio ambiente, encontra-se o plano de emergência nuclear. Este plano deve conter um segmento específico relacionado com o gerenciamento da comunicação de risco à população. Historicamente, técnicas de comunicação de risco surgiram para minimizar danos às pessoas, por meio de estratégias de controle de pânico da população. Entretanto, essa questão atualmente é pouco desenvolvida no Brasil na área de segurança nuclear. Dessa forma, este trabalho visou estabelecer uma proposta inicial no uso da teoria de Sistema de Comando de Incidentes como estratégia de gerenciamento da comunicação de risco em caso de acidentes na Central Nuclear Almirante Álvaro Alberto, localizada no Brasil.

ABSTRACT Nuclear power plants are designed with systems dedicated to offering a high degree of protection to their workers, the population, and the environment. Between the levels of protection of the population and the environment, there is the nuclear emergency plan. This plan must contain a specific segment related to the management of risk communication to the population. Historically, risk communication techniques have emerged to minimize harm to people, through population panic control strategies. However, this issue is currently underdeveloped in Brazil in the field of nuclear safety. Thus, this work aimed to establish an initial proposal on the use of the theory of Incident Command System as a strategy for managing risk communication in the event of accidents at the Almirante Álvaro Alberto Nuclear Power Plant located in Brazil.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a inclusão de narasina em suplementos mineral e proteico sobre o desempenho e o consumo de suplemento de novilhos de corte em pastagem. Cento e cinquenta novilhos Nelore com 17,0±0,06 meses de idade e 219,7±1,62 kg de peso inicial foram distribuídos em 30 unidades experimentais (UEs), com cinco animais cada uma. As UEs foram dispostas em 60 piquetes, os quais foram pastejados continuamente por 28 dias, seguidos de 28 dias de descanso. Utilizou-se o delineamento de blocos ao acaso. O tempo de duração do experimento foi de 140 dias, dividido em cinco períodos experimentais de 28 dias cada um. Os tratamentos avaliados foram: suplemento mineral controle (CON); CON + 1.800 (N1800) ou 2.750 (N2750) mg de narasina por quilograma de suplemento; e suplemento mineral proteinado (PROT) ou PROT + 360 mg de narasina por quilograma de suplemento (PROT 360). A inclusão de narasina na mistura mineral aumentou o ganho médio diário (GMD) durante o primeiro período e reduziu o consumo de suplemento no primeiro, no segundo e no terceiro períodos, quando comparado ao tratamento CON. O GMD e o consumo de suplemento foram semelhantes entre os tratamentos N1800 e N2750. A narasina tem efeito positivo no GMD até 28 de suplementação e controla o consumo de suplemento mineral, sem comprometer esse ganho.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of narasin inclusion in mineral and protein supplements on the performance and supplement intake of grazing beef yearlings. One hundred and fifty Nellore yearlings with 17.0±0.06 months of age and 219.7±1.62 kg initial body weight (BW) were allocated into 30 experimental units (EUs), with five animals each. The EUs were assigned to 16 paddocks, which were continuously stocked for 28 days, followed by 28 days of rest. A randomized complete block design was used. The experiment lasted 140 days, divided into five periods of 28 days each. The assessed treatments were: control mineral supplement (CON); CON + 1,800 (N1800) or 2,750 (N2750) mg narasin per kilogram of supplement; and protein mineral supplement (PROT) or PROT + 360 mg narasin per kilogram of supplement (PROT 360). The inclusion of narasin in the mineral supplement increased average daily gain (ADG) in the first period and decreased supplement intake in the first, second, and third periods, when compared with the CON treatment. The ADG and supplement intake were similar between the N1800 and N2750 treatments. Narasin has a positive effect on ADG up to 28 days of supplementation and controls mineral supplement intake, without compromising this gain.

RESUMO Objetivo: identificar fatores prognósticos envolvidos no carcinoma de células renais não metastático. Métodos: estudo tipo coorte retrospectivo, utilizando dados obtidos em revisão de prontuários de pacientes portadores de carcinoma de células renais, submetidos à nefrectomia radical ou parcial, no Instituto do Câncer do Ceará. Resultados: foram estudados 117 pacientes com média de idade de 59,14 anos e mediana de 59 anos. Não houve predominância de sexo, o rim direito foi o mais acometido (64%) e o tipo histopatológico mais comum foi o carcinoma de células claras (77%). Predominou o estádio pT1 e o grau GII. Das variáveis analisadas, apenas o estadiamento patológico (pT) e o acometimento linfonodal revelaram-se preditoras de sobrevida global. Conclusão: o estadiamento patológico (pT) e o acometimento de linfonodos regionais são fatores prognósticos importantes em pacientes portadores de carcinoma de células renais não metastáticos submetidos a nefrectomia.

ABSTRACT Objective: to identify predictors of mortality in patients submitted to nephrectomy for non-metastatic renal cancer. Methods: we conducted a retrospective cohort study based on the records of patients with renal cancer submitted to radical or partial nephrectomy at the Ceará Cancer Institute. Results: we studied 117 patients, with mean and median age of 59.14 and 59 years, respectively. The male gender was slightly predominant. The right kidney was most frequently affected (64%). The most common histopathological diagnosis was clear-cell carcinoma (77%). Stage pT1 and Fuhrman grade II were predominant. The only predictive variables of overall survival were pathological stage (pT) and lymph node involvement. Conclusion: pathological stage (pT) and lymph node involvement are important prognostic factors in patients undergoing nephrectomy for non-metastatic renal cancer.

Resumo Introdução: Atualmente, a população idosa do Brasil está sofrendo aumento significativo. O envelhecimento é um processo fisiológico que causa alterações nos diversos órgãos, inclusive no rim. A biópsia renal é de suma importância para esclarecimento das alterações morfológicas dessas entidades. Objetivos: Os objetivos deste trabalho foram realizar a análise clínica e epidemiológica dos pacientes idosos e avaliar a prevalência das principais glomerulopatias que os acometem. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo retrospectivo e descritivo, com revisão de 104 laudos de biópsias renais de idosos, com idade igual ou superior a 60 anos, realizados no Serviço de Nefropatologia da Universidade Federal do Triângulo Mineiro (UFTM), entre o período de janeiro de 1996 e dezembro de 2010. Os pacientes foram agrupados segundo síndrome clínica. Resultados: Foram revistas 104 biópsias de pacientes idosos. Destes, 52,94% pertenciam ao gênero masculino. A Hipertensão Arterial foi encontrada em 50,54% dos pacientes. A síndrome clínica predominante foi a Síndrome Nefrótica (42,17%). A maioria das doenças foi de origem glomerular. As podocitopatias foram as glomerulopatias mais prevalentes (34,07%). Discussão/Conclusão: Por meio dessa revisão, observamos que a síndrome nefrótica foi a principal síndrome clínica e as podocitopatias foram as glomerulopatias com mais prevalência no grupo de pacientes idosos submetidos à biópsia renal. A análise das biópsias renais dos pacientes idosos é de fundamental importância, uma vez que o conhecimento das manifestações clínicas das principais glomerulopatias que acometem esse grupo auxiliam a elucidação diagnóstica e no estabelecimento da conduta terapêutica.

Abstract Introduction: Currently, the elderly population of Brazil is suffering significant increase. Aging is a physiological process that causes changes in various organs, including the kidney. A kidney biopsy is of paramount importance to clarify the morphological changes of these entities. Objectives: The aim of this work was to conduct a clinical epidemiological analysis of elderly patients and evaluate the prevalence of major glomerulopathies that affect. Methods: This is a retrospective and descriptive, with a review of 104 reports of renal biopsies of elderly aged over 60 years, performed in the Nefropatologia Federal University of Triângulo Mineiro (UFTM), between periods January 1996 and December 2010. Patients were grouped according to clinical syndrome. Results: We reviewed 104 biopsies of elderly patients. Of these, 52.94% were male. The Hypertension was found in 50.54% of patients. The clinical syndrome was the predominant nephrotic syndrome (42.17%). Most disease was glomerular origin. The glomerulopathy was the most prevalent (34.07%). Discussion/Conclusion: Through this review, we noted that the nephrotic syndrome was the main clinical syndrome and Podocytophaties glomerulopathies were more prevalent in the group of elderly patients undergoing renal biopsy. The analysis of renal biopsies of elderly patients is of paramount importance, since knowledge of the clinical manifestations of major glomerulopathies that affect this group, to assist in establishing the diagnosis and therapeutic management.

A arborização pode beneficiar os cafezais, reduzindo a velocidade dos ventos e a amplitude térmica na cultura. É possível, ainda, que a diminuição na radiação incidente possa influenciar a população de plantas daninhas e diminuir a necessidade de seu controle. Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, avaliar a população e a distribuição de plantas daninhas, na cultura de café arábica consorciado com três cultivares de nogueira-macadâmia, seis anos após o plantio, em Dois Córregos (SP). Os tratamentos consistiram de esquema fatorial 3x3+1, ou seja, café consorciado com três cultivares de nogueira-macadâmia (HAES 816, IAC 4-20 e IAC 9-20) e três locais de amostragem das plantas daninhas no consórcio (na projeção da copa da nogueira-macadâmia, entre as projeções das copas da nogueira-macadâmia e na entrelinha solteira), além de um tratamento adicional (café solteiro). Foram avaliados a incidência e o controle de plantas daninhas, bem como a caracterização fitossociológica. No cultivo de café consorciado com nogueira-macadâmia, a ocorrência e o número de espécies de plantas daninhas foram menores que no cultivo de café solteiro. Na projeção da copa e entre as projeções das copas da nogueira-macadâmia, houve, em média, 82% de redução na ocorrência de plantas daninhas, em comparação ao café solteiro. A cultivar IAC 9-20, por apresentar copa mais alta e de maior diâmetro, foi mais eficiente na redução da ocorrência de plantas daninhas, no consórcio com café.

Arborization can benefit coffee plantations by reducing the wind speed and temperature variation in the crop. It is also possible that the incident radiation can affect the weed populations and reduce the need for their control. This study aimed at assessing the weeds population and distribution, in arabica coffee intercropped with three macadamia cultivars, six years after planting, in Dois Córregos, São Paulo State, Brazil. Treatments consisted of a 3x3+1 factorial scheme, i.e., coffee intercropped with three macadamia cultivars (HAES 816, IAC 4-20 and IAC 9-20) and three sampling positions of weeds in the intercropping (in the macadamia tree canopy projection, among the macadamia tree canopies projections and in the single rows), plus an additional treatment (sole coffee). The weeds incidence and control, as well as their phytosociological characterization, were evaluated. For coffee intercropped with macadamia, the weeds occurrence and number of species were smaller than for sole coffee. For the projection in the canopy and among canopies of macadamia trees, there was an average decrease of 82% in the occurrence of weeds, in comparison with the sole coffee. The IAC 9-20 cultivar was more efficient in reducing the occurrence of weeds, when intercropped with coffee, for presenting a taller canopy, with a larger diameter.

Objetivo Avaliar se o mês de nascimento em diferentes latitudes da América do Sul pode influenciar a presença ou gravidade da esclerose múltipla (EM) na vida. Método Neurologistas de quatro países da América do Sul trabalhando em unidades de EM coletaram os dados de seus pacientes com referência ao mês de nascimento, gênero, idade e progressão da doença. Resultados A análise dos dados mostrou que, para 1207 pacientes com EM e 1207 controles, não havia diferença significativa no mês de nascimento com relação à prevalência de EM em quatro zonas de latitude (0–10; 11–20; 21–30; e 31–40 graus). Não houve relação entre o mês de nascimento e a gravidade da doença em nenhuma destas zonas. Conclusão Os resultados deste estudo mostram que pacientes com EM nascidos de mães grávidas em diferentes latitudes sul não seguem o padrão dos resultados sazonais encontrados nas latitudes norte.

Objective To assess whether the month of birth in different latitudes of South America might influence the presence or severity of multiple sclerosis (MS) later in life. Methods Neurologists in four South American countries working at MS units collected data on their patients' month of birth, gender, age, and disease progression. Results Analysis of data from 1207 MS patients and 1207 control subjects did not show any significant variation in the month of birth regarding the prevalence of MS in four latitude bands (0–10; 11–20; 21–30; and 31–40 degrees). There was no relationship between the month of birth and the severity of disease in each latitude band. Conclusion The results from this study show that MS patients born to mothers who were pregnant at different Southern latitudes do not follow the seasonal pattern observed at high Northern latitudes.
