Abstract University-level writing is a skill in which other basic cognitive, discursive and linguistic skills are involved. Often students’ first year higher education students have difficulties writing in their chosen discipline, which may affect their academic performance. The aim of this quantitative cross-sectional and correlational study is to evaluate the relationships between three predictor variables supported by previous research (academic vocabulary, academic language, and reading comprehension) and academic writing. Sixty-one first-year college students were assessed on the predictor variables and academic writing during the Covid-19 pandemic. The results show that students have a relatively high mastery of academic vocabulary, a medium one of academic language skills, a low one of reading comprehension, and a very low one of academic writing. In the subsample that completed all assessments (n=42), significant moderate and strong correlations were identified between variables and academic writing, except for academic vocabulary. Results suggest that academic language skills, particularly connectors, and reading comprehension could be ideal candidates for intervention efforts that help strengthen the academic writing process of new college students.

Resumen La escritura en la universidad es una habilidad en la que intervienen otras destrezas básicas de corte cognitivo, discursivo y lingüístico. Sin embargo, se ha identificado que, con frecuencia, los alumnos de nuevo ingreso a la educación superior presentan dificultades para escribir dentro de su disciplina, lo cual puede afectar su desempeño académico. Por eso, el objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar las relaciones que existen entre tres variables predictoras sustentadas en investigaciones previas (vocabulario académico, lenguaje académico y comprensión lectora) con la escritura académica. Para ello, el método de investigación empleado fue de corte cuantitativo transversal y correlacional. Tres grupos de estudiantes universitarios de primer año (n = 61) fueron evaluados en las variables predictoras y la escritura académica durante la pandemia del covid-19. Los resultados mostraron que los estudiantes presentaban un dominio relativamente alto en vocabulario académico, medio en habilidades del lenguaje académico, bajo en comprensión lectora, y muy bajo en escritura académica. En la submuestra que completó todas las pruebas (n = 42), se identificaron correlaciones significativas de moderadas a fuertes entre las variables evaluadas y la escritura académica, excepto para el vocabulario académico. Estos hallazgos sugieren que las habilidades del lenguaje académico, especialmente el uso adecuado de los conectores, y la comprensión lectora, pudieran ser candidatos ideales para los esfuerzos de intervención que ayuden a fortalecer el proceso de escritura académica de los estudiantes de nuevo ingreso a la universidad.

Resumo Escrever na universidade é uma habilidade na qual intervêm outras habilidades cognitivas, discursivas e linguísticas básicas. Porém, identificou-se que, frequentemente, os alunos ingressantes no ensino superior apresentam dificuldades de escrita dentro de sua disciplina, o que pode afetar seu desempenho acadêmico. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as relações existentes entre três variáveis preditoras apoiadas em pesquisas anteriores (vocabulário acadêmico, linguagem acadêmica e compreensão de leitura) com a escrita acadêmica. Para isso, o método de pesquisa utilizado foi quantitativo, transversal e correlacional. Três grupos de estudantes universitários do primeiro ano (n = 61) foram avaliados quanto às variáveis preditoras e à escrita acadêmica durante a pandemia de Covid-19. Os resultados mostraram que os alunos tinham proficiência relativamente alta em vocabulário acadêmico, média em habilidades linguísticas acadêmicas, baixa compreensão de leitura e muito baixa em redação acadêmica. Na subamostra que completou todos os testes (n = 42), foram identificadas correlações significativas moderadas a fortes entre as variáveis testadas e a escrita acadêmica, exceto o vocabulário acadêmico. Estas descobertas sugerem que as competências linguísticas académicas, especialmente o uso adequado de conectores, e a compreensão da leitura, podem ser candidatos ideais para esforços de intervenção para ajudar a fortalecer o processo de escrita académica dos novos estudantes universitários.

Abstract The objective of this systematic review (SR) with meta-analysis (MA) was to identify the dietary patterns of the population, regarding ethnicity and gender, and their association with the metabolic syndrome and its risk factors (MetS-RF). The literature search was performed using Medline, Scopus, Ebsco, SciELO, and BVS databases. Studies with adult participants that identified dietary patterns associated with MetS-RF were included. Pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95%CI were calculated using a random-effect, generic inverse variance method. Statistical heterogeneity and publication bias were explored. The dietary patterns were classified as healthy or unhealthy. Studies were categorized into three groups: Women (all ethnicities), Afro-descendant (men and women), and General Population (both genders and ethnicity). Among the articles found (n=8,496), 22 integrated the SR and 11 the MA. The adherence to the healthy dietary pattern was negatively associated (protective factor) with MetS-RF only in the General Population (OR=0.77; 95%CI: 0.61-0.98). Nevertheless, the unhealthy dietary pattern was associated with the higher prevalence of MetS-RF in all analyzed groups. It was concluded that an unhealthy eating pattern increases the chances of SM-RF in adults, regardless of gender and ethnicity.

Resumo Esta revisão sistemática (RS) com meta-análise (MA) teve por objetivo identificar os padrões alimentares da população, segundo sexo e etnia, e sua associação com a síndrome metabólica e seus fatores de risco (SM-FR). Foram consultadas as seguintes bases de dados: Medline, Scopus, Ebsco, SciELO e BVS. Foram incluídos estudos com participantes adultos e que identificaram padrões alimentares associados à SM-FR. Na MA empregou-se o modelo de efeitos aleatórios para estimativa do odds ratio (OR) combinado. A heterogeneidade estatística e o viés de publicação foram explorados. Os padrões alimentares foram agrupados em saudável ou não saudável. Conforme a composição das amostras, os estudos foram assim categorizados: Mulheres (sem definição de etnia), Afrodescendentes (homens e mulheres), e População Geral (ambos os sexos e etnia). Foram encontrados 8.496 artigos, dos quais 22 compuseram a RS e 11 a MA. A adesão ao padrão alimentar saudável associou-se negativamente com SM-FR (fator de proteção) apenas para População Geral (OR=0,77; IC95%: 0,61-0,98). No entanto, o padrão alimentar não saudável esteve associado a maiores prevalências de SM-FR em todos os grupos analisados. Concluiu-se que um padrão alimentar não saudável aumenta as chances de SM-FR em adultos, independentemente de gênero e etnia.

Resumo Neoplasias cardíacas são raras, tendo como principal representante o mixoma atrial (MA), que corresponde a cerca de metade de todos os casos. O MA tem incidência estimada entre 0.001% e 0.3% na população em geral, no entanto apenas aproximadamente 0,06% desses cursam com eventos embólicos coronarianos. Homem de 33 anos, tabagista, admitido com quadro de precordialgia intensa e irradiação para membro superior esquerdo com duração de uma hora. O eletrocardiograma evidenciou elevação de segmento ST nas derivações D2, D3 e aVF troponina sérica elevada, confirmando infarto com supra desnivelamento do segmento ST (IAMCSST). Foi realizada cineangiocoronariografia, a qual revelou oclusão em terço proximal de artéria coronária direita por trombo. Realizada tentativa de aspiração do trombo, sem sucesso, seguido por angioplastia primária com balão sem colocação de stent. Durante a investigação do quadro, paciente realizou ecocardiograma transtorácico o qual demonstrou massa homogênea de superfície regular, de 5.2 cm x 2.3 cm, aderida ao septo interatrial, com lobulações de características emboligênicas prolapsando para valva mitral e ventrículo esquerdo na diástole, compatível com MA. Abstract Cardiac tumors are rare entities, among which atrial myxoma (AM) stands as the most frequent, accounting for approximately half of all reported cases. The incidence of AM is estimated to range from 0.001% to 0.3% within the general population, yet only about 0.06% of these cases present with coronary embolic events. We report on a 33-year-old male smoker who experienced acute, severe precordial pain radiating to the left upper limb, lasting for one hour. The electrocardiographic evaluation demonstrated ST-segment elevation in leads D2, D3, and aVF, alongside significantly elevated serum troponin levels, confirming a diagnosis of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Subsequent coronary angiography revealed proximal occlusion of the right coronary artery due to thrombus. An initial attempt of thrombus aspiration was unsuccessful, followed by primary angioplasty with balloon inflation without stent placement. Further diagnostic exploration through transthoracic echocardiography identified a homogenous, smooth-surfaced mass measuring 5.2 cm x 2.3 cm attached to the interatrial septum. This mass, characterized by lobulations, prolapsed into the mitral valve and left ventricle during diastole, consistent with AM. Surgical resection of the mass was successfully performed, with the patient being discharged asymptomatic. In the reported case, the patient's profile, notably his age, and gender, diverges from the typical epidemiological characteristics associated with AM. This case adds to the limited number of reports where the inferior wall is affected by the right coronary artery being occluded. Resumo Objetivou-se avaliar o perfil de resistência de Aeromonas spp. isoladas de tambaquis (Colossoma macropomum) oriundos de cultivos da Região Metropolitana de São Luís - MA. Foram utilizadas 114 cepas bacterianas pertencentes a espécies de Aeromonas spp. e o perfil de resistência aos antimicrobianos foi realizado pelo método de difusão em disco com a utilização de 10 antimicrobianos. Os isolados foram classificados como sensível, sensível com exposição aumentada e resistente aos princípios avaliados e classificados os fenótipos com resistência múltipla às drogas testadas (MDR). As cepas bacterianas apresentaram resistência generalizada à penicilina; elevados percentuais de resistência à oxacilina, cefepime, cefadroxil e azitromicina. Os antimicrobianos com maior sensibilidade foram a ampicilina associada ao sulbactam, neomicina e ofloxacina e elevada frequência dos isolados (34,21%) foram categorizados como fenótipos MDR. Abstract The current study assesses the resistance profile of Aeromonas spp. individuals isolated from tambaqui fish (Colossoma macropomum) grown in fish farms located in São Luís Metropolitan Region - MA. In total, 114 bacterial strains belonging to species Aeromonas spp. were used in the experiment. Antimicrobial resistance profile was defined based on using the disk diffusion method and 10 antimicrobials. Isolates were classified as susceptible, susceptible upon increased exposure and resistant to the assessed principles; phenotypes showing resistance to multiple tested drugs (MDR) were classified. Bacterial strains presented widespread resistance to penicillin; as well as high oxacillin-, cefepime-, cefadroxil- and azithromycin-resistance rates. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a capacidade de identificar possíveis doadores de órgãos em um hospital universitário no estado do Maranhão (MA). Métodos: O estudo é uma coorte retrospectiva, quantitativa, baseada na análise documental de prontuários de pacientes falecidos nas unidades de terapia intensiva (UTIs) de adultos de um hospital universitário no MA, no período de 2018 a 2019. Utilizou-se o Instrumento de Triagem I da Organización Nacional de Trasplantes (ONT) da Espanha, fundamentado por Avedis Donabedian e validado no Brasil, para identificar possíveis doadores com indícios clínicos de morte encefálica (ME). A análise envolveu a revisão dos prontuários e a aplicação de critérios de diagnóstico de ME, conforme a Resolução nº 2.173 de 2017 do Conselho Federal de Medicina. Foram analisados 312 prontuários, resultando em 38 com sinais de ME, classificados como escapes por falhas na identificação e manutenção dos doadores. Resultados: Dos 312 prontuários avaliados, 21 de 2018 e 17 de 2019 (totalizando 38) apresentaram indícios clínicos de ME e foram selecionados para auditoria detalhada. Além disso, foi identificado que 31,1% dos escapes ou perdas de possíveis doadores ocorreram devido a óbitos não identificados como ME, gerando indicadores antes desconhecidos. ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the capacity to identify potential organ donors in a university hospital in Maranhão (MA). Methods: The study is a retrospective, quantitative cohort based on the documentary analysis of medical records of deceased patients in the adult intensive care units (ICUs) of a university hospital in MA from 2018 to 2019. Screening Instrument I from the Organización Nacional de Trasplantes (ONT) of Spain, based on Avedis Donabedian and validated in Brazil, was used to identify potential donors with clinical signs of brain death (BD). The analysis involved reviewing medical records and applying BD diagnostic criteria, according to Conselho Federal de Medicina Resolution nº 2,173 of 2017. A total of 312 records were analyzed, resulting in 38 with signs of BD, classified as escapes due to identification and maintenance failures of potential donors. Results: Of the 312 evaluated records, 21 from 2018 and 17 from 2019 (totaling 38) presented clinical signs of BD and were selected for detailed auditing.Additionally, it was identified that 31.1% of the escapes or losses of potential donors resulted from deaths not identified as BD, generating previously unknown indicators. The tool revealed that patients undergoing surgical treatment for brain tumors and cerebrovascular diseases have a higher likelihood of evolving to BD. These patients, usually admitted to the general ICU, should receive special attention in daily assessments due to their high potential to become organ donors. Abstract The Cachoeirinha Sn ± (Nb-Ta) deposit is an important producer of the Rondônia Tin Province. It is inserted in the regional unit named Rondônia Intrusive Suite (995–956 Ma) and hosts granular accumulations of columbite group minerals (CGM) embedded in thick Cenozoic colluvial-alluvial covers. Cachoeirinha CGM have subrounded to angular grains, with irregular to regular internal zoning, micro-inclusion, and exsolution features. They have columbite-(Fe) as the dominant mineral phase, with variation in the Ta/(Ta+Nb) ratio and with Sn, Ti, W, U, Ba, Cr, REE, and V as chemical impurities. It has high total REE content (LREEN depleted, HREEN enriched, Ce and Eu anomalies), δ18O = 2.78‰, and with two U-Pb age groups: 1052 ± 6 and 909 ± 7 Ma. This information indicates that physicochemical oscillations favored the ionic substitutions and resorption mechanisms between Nb ↔ Ta, as well as coupled substitutions with the entry of geochemical impurities, according to the equation: 3(Sn, Ti, U, Si)4+ + (W, Cr)6+ ↔ 2(V, Nb, Ta)5+ + 2(Al, REE)3+ + (Fe, Mn, Ba)2+, at the temperature range between 400° and 500°C. Resumo Objetivos: investigar a associação do estado nutricional com deficiência de iodo urinário em gestantes atendidas em Unidades Básicas de Saúde do município de São Luís - MA. Métodos: estudo transversal, realizado com 261 gestantes. Foram coletadas amostras de urina para análise de determinação do iodo urinário, considerou-se deficiência o valor <150 µg/L e adequado, valor ≥150 µg/L. Foram aferidas as medidas de peso e altura no momento da coleta e investigação do peso pré-gestacional para cálculo do IMC. As variáveis contínuas foram expressas em média, desvio padrão, mediana, percentil 25 e 75 e as categóricas em frequência simples e relativa e em percentual. Análises multivariadas investigaram associação entre IMC pré-gestacional e atual e UIC (Concentração urinária de iodo). Resultados: a média do IMC pré-gestacional foi 24,3 ± 4,5 kg/m2 e do IMC atual 27,2 ± 6,5 kg/m2. Abstract Objectives: to investigate the association of nutritional status with urinary iodine deficiency in pregnant women attending the Basic Health Units in the city of São Luís - Maranhão. Methods: cross-sectional study carried out with 261 pregnant women. Urine samples were collected for analysis of determination of urinary iodine. Iodine deficiency was considered as <150 µg/L and adequate as ≥150 µg/L. Weight and height measurements were taken at the time of collection and investigation of pre-pregnancy weight calculate BMI). Continuous variables were presented as mean, standard deviation, median, 25th and 75th percentiles, and categorical variables as simple and relative frequencies and percentages. Multivariate analyses investigate the association between pre-pregnancy and current BMI and UIC (urinary iodine concentration). Results: the mean pre-pregnancy BMI was 24.3 ± 4.5 kg/m2, and the current BMI was 27.2 ± 6.5 kg/m2. The median UIC was 181.3 µg/L (113.2-271.7), and 40.6% of the sample showed iodine deficiency. RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o crescimento e a produtividade do quiabo em função de doses de fósforo (P) e obter o teor crítico de P foliar, nas condições edafoclimáticas do Maranhão (MA), Brasil. O experimento de campo foi realizado no período de 15 de fevereiro de 2017 a 9 de maio de 2017, em São Luís, MA. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram doses de 0, 80, 160, 240 e 320 kg ha-1 de P2O5, na forma de superfosfato simples, no plantio, mais 10 t ha-1 de esterco bovino sólido. O aumento da dose de P aumentou a altura das plantas, massa seca de folhas e caule. Com o fornecimento de fósforo a precocidade do florescimento foi maior que em plantas não fertilizadas. . ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth and yield of okra as a function of phosphorus (P) doses and to obtain the critical leaf P content, under the edaphoclimatic conditions of Maranhão (MA), Brazil. The field experiment was carried out from February 15, 2017, to May 9, 2017, in São Luís, MA. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with four replications. The treatments were doses of 0, 80, 160, 240 and 320 kg ha-1 of P2O5, in the form of triple superphosphate, at planting, plus 10 t ha-1 of solid cattle manure. The increase of the P dose increased plant height, leaf dry mass and stem dry mass. With phosphorus supply, flowering occurred earlier than in plants without fertilization. Considering soils with low P content (P(resin) = 11 to 25 mg dm-3) and the minimum recommended organic fertilization for the okra crop of 10 t ha-1 of solid cattle manure, the maximum number of fruits, length of fruit and yield (9960.36 kg ha-1) were obtained with the fertilization of 80 kg ha-1 of P2O5, for the edaphoclimatic conditions of MA, Brazil. Resumen El objetivo del estudio fue resaltar la relación entre la ansiedad matemática (AM) de padres y docentes con la AM de los niños y su desempeño en aritmética y de los niños. Participaron en el estudio 286 niños entre 7 y 10 años y sus respectivos padres y profesores de matemáticas. Los instrumentos utilizados fueron: Cuestionario de AM; Prueba de Rendimiento Escolar: Subprueba aritmética; Escala de AM; Matrices Progresivas Escala Coloreada de Raven. Abstract The aim of the study was to demonstrate a relationship between the math anxiety (MA) of parents and teachers and the MA of children and the effects on the children’s performance in arithmetic. 286 children aged between 7 and 10 years and their parents and mathematics teachers participated in the study. The instruments used were: Math Anxiety Questionnaire; School Performance Test - Arithmetic subtest; Mathematical Anxiety Scale; and Raven’s Colored Progressive Matrices. The results showed that advanced age of the teacher was a predictor of high levels of MA, which influenced the children’s performance in arithmetic. Low parental education was associated with high MA, however, there were no correlations between parents’ and children’s MA. Resumo Com o objetivo de avaliar a qualidade microbiológica de águas e ostras de bancos naturais e ostreiculturas localizados na ilha de São Luís (MA), foram analisadas no período de setembro de 2020 a fevereiro de 2021 60 amostras, sendo 30 de água e 30 de ostras (Crassostrea sp.), coletadas diretamente com os marisqueiros e proprietários de cultivos nos municípios da ilha de São Luís. Para a determinação de coliformes totais e Escherichia coli nas amostras de água, foi utilizado o método rápido Colilert®. A contagem de coliformes totais e termotolerantes em ostras foi realizada pelo método do número mais provável (NMP) e de E. coli por testes bioquímicos (Indol, VM, VP, Citrato). A enumeração de Staphylococcus coagulase positiva ocorreu pelo meio Baird Parker para isolamento e identificação, assim como por testes bioquímicos. A média geométrica do resultado da contagem de E. coli nas amostras de água variou entre 604,3 e 1.130,8 NMP/100 mL, indicando qualidade microbiológica insatisfatória. Quanto às amostras de ostras, oito (26,7%) das 30 amostras estavam impróprias para consumo, sendo quatro (13,3%) contaminadas por Salmonella sp. e E. coli, respectivamente. ABSTRACT In order to evaluate the microbiological quality of water and oysters from natural banks and oyster farms located on the Island of São Luís, Maranhão (MA), 60 samples were analyzed from September 2020 to February 2021, 30 of water and 30 of oysters (Crassostrea sp.), collected directly from shellfish farmers and owners of oyster farms in the municipalities of the Island of São Luís, MA. For the determination of total coliforms and Escherichia coli in the water samples the Colilert® rapid method was used. For the enumeration of total and thermotolerant coliforms in oysters the Most Probable Number (MPN) method was used and E. coli by biochemical tests (Indol, MV, VP, Citrate). The enumeration of coagulase positive Staphylococcus was performed using Baird Parker medium for isolation and identification, as well as biochemical tests. The geometric mean result of E. coli counts in the water samples ranged from 604.3 to 1,130.8 MPN/100mL, indicating unsatisfactory microbiological quality. As for the oyster samples, 8 (26.7%) out of 30 samples were unfit for consumption, and 4 (13.3%) were contaminated by Salmonella sp. and E. coli, respectively. According to RDC No. 331/19 and IN No. 60 of ANVISA, the results are worrisome for public health and mitigating actions are recommended, such as regular monitoring of the microbiological quality of the water. RESUMO A salinidade do solo é um factor que afeta a produção e o rendimento das culturas. Estima-se que 74% dos solos agrícolas são salinos, um problema que pode ser agravado devido às alterações climáticas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a dose letal 50 (LD50) de NaCl e metanossulfonato de etila (EMS) em pimenta jalapeño (Capsicum annuum L. cv. Jalapeño M.) para a seleção de mutantes putativos tolerantes ao sal. Foi utilizado o comprimento da raiz como indicador do LD50 de NaCl em plântulas cultivadas durante 35 dias em meio MS contendo 0 (sem NaCl), 50, 100, 150, 200, ou 250 mM de NaCl e a taxa de germinação como indicador do LD50 de EMS em sementes expostas a 0% (sem EMS), 0.01%, 0.1%, 0.25%, ou 0.5% EMS durante 3 e 6 h. Plântulas tolerantes ao sal após 35 dias em meio com o LD50 para NaCl foram selecionadas. ABSTRACT Soil salinity is a factor affecting crop production and yield. An estimated 74% of agricultural soils are saline, a problem that could be aggravated due to climate change. Our goal was to determine the lethal dose 50 (LD50) of NaCl and ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) in jalapeño pepper (Capsicum annuum L. cv. Jalapeño M.) for selecting putative salt-tolerant mutants. Root length was used as an indicator of the LD50 of NaCl in seedlings cultured for 35 days in MS medium containing 0 (without NaCl), 50, 100, 150, 200, or 250 mM NaCl and germination rate as an indicator of the LD50 of EMS in seeds exposed to 0% (without EMS), 0.01%, 0.1%, 0.25%, or 0.5% EMS for 3 and 6 h. We selected salt-tolerant seedlings after 35 days in medium with the determined LD50 of NaCl. ABSTRACT Species of the genus Mansonia Blanchard are disease pathogen vectors in some regions of the world and can cause considerable inconvenience due to their bites when present in high numbers. However, little is known regarding their biology in Brazil. The objective of this work was to investigate some reproductive parameters of Mansonia from the western Brazilian Amazon. Females were captured in the field using human landing catches in rural areas of Porto Velho, Rondonia, Brazil. The mosquitoes were identified and separated into two groups for oviposition: forced, i.e., with wing removal, and free oviposition, without wing removal. Daily observations of oviposition and female survival were conducted until oviposition. The eggs and subsequent larvae were counted for fecundity and fertility evaluation, respectively. The species collected in this study were Mansonia amazonensis (Theobald), Mansonia humeralis Dyar & Knab and Mansonia titillans (Walker). The oviposition percentage for Ma. amazonensis was much lower than for Ma. humeralis and Ma. titillans. Forced oviposition resulted in a higher number of ovipositing females only for Ma. humeralis. Fecundity and fertility were not affected by the oviposition method. Egg and larval numbers were generally lower for Ma. amazonensis compared with the other species. Forced oviposition may be a tool to increase the number of ovipositing females depending on the Mansonia species studied in order to establish colonies in the laboratory.

Abstract Microbialites are the most abundant life evidence in Precambrian sedimentary rocks. They are produced by microbial interaction activity and sedimentary processes reflecting paleoenvironmental conditions. The Ediacaran-Cambrian carbonate and siliciclastic successions in the Southern Amazon Craton in Central Brazil, provide a key opportunity to understand how the metazoan life coexisted with the microbial communities. The spatial and temporal distribution of microbialites as well as morphological and paleoenvironmental changes have been assessed, reinterpreting previous works and including new data from the Araras-Alto Paraguai and Corumbá basins. The deposition was controlled by subsidence and sea-level changes that affected these basins, considered extensions of epicontinental seas during the Gondwana assembly. The stromatolites are restricted to coastal deposits and experienced thriving flourishment intervals after the Marinoan Glaciation (635 Ma). Post-glacial transgression was marked by microbial colonization in shallow platforms represented by stratiform and giant domical stromatolites in the Araras-Alto Paraguai Basin. The continuity of the transgression generated a moderately deep aragonite sea at about 622 Ma. A progressive sea-level fall caused the implantation of coastal environments under greenhouse conditions with tidal flat and sabkha settings colonized by centimetric-scale stromatolites. The sea retreat was accompanied by progressive uplift, causing a moderate inversion of the basin and erosion of the succession until ~560 Ma with the deposition of the last preserved tidal flat deposits with the occurrence of thrombolites. The subsiding Corumbá Basin was the site of microbially-induced deposition of carbonates in a shallow platform connected to an offshore setting with the proliferation of metazoan straddling the Ediacaran-Cambrian boundary. Microbial communities were restricted to lagoon deposits during the Lower Cambrian transgression in the Araras-Alto Paraguai Basin and the last phase refers to the sea retreat towards southeast, developing a fluvial system connected with the arid and evaporitic tidal flats colonized by microbialites that lasted until the upper Cambrian. Except for the post-glacial stromatolites, the columnar and domal microbialite indicate that the coastal settings dominated the Ediacaran-Cambrian transition. The preservation of microbialites in the post-glacial intervals can be associated with the Mg-Ca-CO3 oversaturation in dolomitic platforms. The rapid calcification and ability to resist the dissolution and replacement have increased the stromatolites’ preservation potential reported here, where its well-preserved occurrence in tidal flats and sabkha occurs due to intense early diagenetic silicification. The change from carbonate accumulation to siliciclastic-rich environments contributed to the demise of microbially-induced strata. In general, the scarce coexistence between coastal stromatolite and metazoan-bearing marine deposits makes it challenging to establish a competitive relationship between these organisms, as previously postulated.
