ABSTRACT Cadmium (Cd) toxicity harms photosynthesis, crop nutrition, and crop yield. Here, we submitted five maize cultivars with different tolerance to Cd to a toxic Cd concentration in the nutrient solution to assess their physiological responses. The study aimed at assessing the Cd effect on biomass and Cd and nutrient concentration in maize cultivars, evaluating how the photosynthetic is affected by Cd in maize cultivars exposed to Cd for different lengths of time, and understanding how the antioxidant defense system of different cultivars acts under Cd stress. To evaluate the effects of Cd stress, biomass, tolerance index, and plant mineral composition (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn), chlorophyll a fluorescence, and enzyme activity were determined. Cd toxicity reduced the biomass by 24% in the most tolerant cultivar and 41% in the most sensitive. The concentration of Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn in the plants was reduced owing to the Cd application. In contrast, N, P, K, Ca, and Mg concentrations were unaffected. The chlorophyll a fluorescence variables were not affected by Cd. Superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and polyphenol oxidase reduced their activities by 69, 20, and 14% in the sensitive CMS36 cultivar. For the tolerant cultivar (Gorutuba), Cd stress altered the peroxidase activity only. The data revealed distinct profiles in the accumulation of Cd, biomass yield, enzyme activity, and photosynthetic efficiency of cultivars. The physiological variables were sensible to physiological alterations and may help monitor Cd toxicity. RESUMO: Considerando que o cádmio (Cd) apresenta alta persistência no ambiente e toxicidade aos seres humanos, estratégias para diminuir ou evitar a entrada de Cd na cadeia trófica são fundamentais para garantir a segurança alimentar. Neste contexto, avaliamos os efeitos de silício (Si) aplicado como fertilizante a base de terra diatomácea na amenização da toxicidade do Cd em milho cultivado em solo contaminado, com e sem correção de pH. Além de determinar as concentrações de Si e Cd, o acúmulo de nutrientes nas plantas (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Cu e Zn) em função das doses de Si aplicadas ao solo foi avaliado. Os resultados mostraram que tanto a calagem quanto o Si tiveram efeitos positivos na biomassa e na absorção de nutrientes, mas o efeito do Si no desenvolvimento das plantas foi independente da reação do solo. O Si reduziu a fitotoxidade por Cd em ambos os solos, corrigidos e não corrigidos, diminuindo a concentração de Cd na parte aérea. A amenização da toxicidade de Cd foi mais efetiva em solos sem correção, devido à maior disponibilidade de Cd em solos ácidos. Os benefícios da aplicação de Si sobre a produção de biomassa, composição mineral e fitotoxidade do Cd foram observados em plantas cultivadas em solos com e sem correção. Considerando a transferência reduzida de Cd para a parte aérea promovida pelo Si, é provável que ocorra menor acúmulo de Cd nos grãos de milho, com implicações para a segurança alimentar.

ABSTRACT: Given that cadmium (Cd) poses high persistence in the environment and toxicity to humans, strategies to either decrease or avoid Cd entry in the trophic chain are fundamental to secure food safety. Here we assessed the effects of applying rates of Si as a diatomaceous Earth-based fertilizer on the amelioration of Cd toxicity towards maize plants grown on soil with or without pH correction. Besides determining Si and Cd concentrations, we also evaluated plant accumulation of nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn) as a function of Si doses applied to the soil. Results showed that both the Si application and the liming had a positive effect on biomass and nutrient uptake, but the Si effect on plants’ performance took place irrespectively to the soil pH. Silicon ameliorated Cd phytotoxicity in both limed and unlimed soils by decreasing Cd concentration in shoots and improving biomass yield and plant nutrition. Silicon alleviation of Cd-inhibitory effects on plants was more effective in the unlimed soil owing to the higher Cd availability in acidic soils. Also, taking into account the reduced transfer of Cd to shoots driven by Si, lower Cd accumulation in maize grains is likely, with implications to food safety. So, further studies on field conditions are warranted.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a variabilidade espacial da resistência a penetração em solo sob diferentes condições de colheita de cana-de-açúcar na microrregião do Litoral Norte paraibano. O estudo foi realizado em Argissolo Acinzentado cultivado com cana-de-açúcar, nas fazendas Santa Emília II e Maria da Luz I, pertencentes à Usina Miriri e Bioenergia S/A, nos municípios de Rio Tinto e Capim, estado da Paraíba no Brasil. Selecionou-se três áreas: Colheita manual; Colheita mecanizada e; Colheita manual e mecanizada. As coletas se procederam em parcelas de 100 x 100 m, sob grid de amostragem de 20 x 20 m, contemplando linhas e entrelinhas de plantio, sendo cada ponto de cruzamento da malha amostral georreferenciado, e levantada a sua resistência mecânica à penetração com auxílio de um penetrômetro de impacto modelo IAA/Planausucar-Stolf na profundidade de 0-0,6 m. Foi procedida coleta de amostra deformadas e indeformadas nas profundidade de 0-0,1 e 0,1-0,2 m para análises das seguintes variáveis: Umidade do solo, Textura, Argila dispersa em água, Grau de floculação. Observou-se efeito pepita puro nas camadas de 0-0,1 e 0,4-0,5 m na linha da área de colheita manual e mecanizada. Na maioria das condições analisadas constatou-se o modelo esférico. Os alcances foram semelhantes para áreas, com amplitude de 25 a 49 m, indicando que o manejo de colheita, no período estudado, não exerceu influência para a resistência à penetração. Não foram observadas áreas compactadas e a dependência espacial da resistência à penetração foi caracterizada como moderada a forte.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the spatial variability of resistance to penetration in soil under sugarcane crops subjected to different harvest methods in the North Coast microregion of the state of Paraiba, Brazil. The study was conducted in a Typic Hapludult under sugarcane crops, at the farms Santa Emília-II and Maria da Luz-I of the company Miriri Food and Bioenergy S/A, in the municipalities of Rio Tinto and Capim, respectively, state of Paraíba, Brazil. Three sugarcane areas with different harvest methods (manual, mechanized, and manual/mechanized) were selected. The sampling was done in plots of 100 × 100 m, using a grid of 20 × 20 m, covering planting rows and interrows; each intersection point of the grid was georeferenced, and the soil mechanic resistance to penetration was evaluated with the aid of an impact penetrometer (IAA/Planalsucar-Stolf) up to the depth of 0-0.6 m. Soil disturbed and undisturbed samples from the 0.0-0.1 and 0.1-0.2 m layers were collected for analyses of soil moisture, texture, clay dispersed in water, flocculation degree. A pure nugget effect was found in the 0.0-0.1 and 0.4-0.5 m soil layers in the rows of the areas with manual/mechanized harvest. The spherical model was found for most conditions evaluated. The results for the areas were similar, with amplitude of 25-49 m, indicating that the harvest management had no effect on the soil resistance to penetration. No compacted areas were found, and the spatial dependency of the resistance to penetration was characterized as moderate to strong.
