ABSTRACT Purpose: This study aimed to characterize retinitis pigmentosa associated with the eyes shut homolog gene, which causes hereditary retinal degeneration. Methods: The anatomical and functional findings of retinitis pigmentosa in patients with variants of the eyes shut homolog gene were characterized and compared using multimodal imaging and genetic analysis of the variants. Clinical data such as visual acuity, lens status, and refraction were obtained from medical records. Patients underwent an ophthalmic examination, including static visual field, microperimetry, optical coherence tomography, fundus autofluorescence, and fundus photography. Results: Twenty-two patients were included in the study. Several anatomical and functional characteristics of retinitis pigmentosa-eyes shut homolog were identified, including the presence of cataracts, cystoid macular edema, epiretinal membrane, and a tubular visual field. Genetic results revealed 26 distinct variants in the cohort, with 7 novel variants not previously documented or reported in the scientific literature or databases. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate that eyes shut homolog-retinitis pigmentosa manifests in specific patterns, starting in adolescence with mild progression and advancing with age. The integration of multimodal imaging and genetic analysis has provided a detailed understanding of the anatomical and functional features of retinitis pigmentosa-eyes shut homolog. Seven novel variants of the eyes shut homolog gene have been identified. These findings enhance the understanding of eyes shut homolog-related retinitis pigmentosa characteristics of by detailing the spectrum of mutations in this gene within the Brazilian population. ABSTRACT The objective was to investigate the working conditions and physical and mental health of health professionals working on the front lines of COVID-19 in urgent, emergency, and intensive care services in Brazil, in the second year of the pandemic. Cross-sectional study, using an electronic questionnaire, through which data on working conditions, and physical and mental health were collected, in addition to the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) instrument. The sample (n=209) included nurses (28.7%), nursing technicians (30.1%), physiotherapists (33%), and physicians (8.2%). The professionals had an average age of 34.6 years and reported an average workload of 53.5 hours/week. There was an increase in hours worked (62%) and in the number of patients (84%). Most reported a good relationship with their boss (89%) and job satisfaction (87%). The prevalence of symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression was greater than 45%, with a predominance of severe or extremely severe symptoms. The prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and fatigue was 84.7% and 83.3%, respectively. Health professionals showed an increase in workload and demand during the COVID-19 pandemic. There was also intense damage to the physical and mental health of these workers. RESUMO Objetivou-se investigar as condições de trabalho e a saúde física e mental de profissionais de saúde atuantes na linha de frente da covid-19 em serviços de urgência, emergência e terapia intensiva no Brasil, no segundo ano da pandemia. Estudo transversal, com uso de questionário eletrônico, por meio do qual coletaram-se dados sobre condições de trabalho, saúde física e mental, além do instrumento Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21). A amostra (n=209) incluiu enfermeiros (28,7%), técnicos de enfermagem (30,1%), fisioterapeutas (33%) e médicos (8,2%). Os profissionais possuíam idade média de 34,6 anos e relataram uma carga horária média de 53,5 horas/semana. Verificou-se aumento das horas trabalhadas (62%) e da quantidade de pacientes (84%). A maioria relatou bom relacionamento com o chefe (89%) e satisfação com o trabalho (87%). A prevalência de sintomas de estresse, ansiedade e depressão foi superior a 45%, com predomínio de sintomas graves ou extremamente graves. ABSTRACT: This study evaluated chromium and quantitative and qualitative feed restriction as alternative nutritional strategies to ractopamine in finishing barrows. Fifty barrows, genetically similar, with an initial body weight of 99.0 ± 4.3 kg and a final body weight of 117.2 ± 5.8 kg were used. The animals were distributed in a randomized complete block design with five nutritional treatments (Control; Rac = 10ppm ractopamine; Chromium = 0,8mg chromium yeast; Quality = qualitative restriction, 7.5% less net energy in the diet; Quanti = 15% quantitative reduction in feed supply), with five replicates and two animals per replicate. Chromium supplementation and quantitative feed restriction reduced feed, lysine, net energy, and crude protein intakes (P < 0.05). Chromium, ractopamine, and quantitative restriction improved feed conversion (P < 0.05). Supplementation with chromium and ractopamine and feed restriction did not influence the carcass characteristics of the pigs (P < 0.05). Quantitative feed restriction and supplementation of 0.8mg of chromium yeast are presented as potential alternatives to ractopamine in the diet of finishing pigs.

RESUMO: O estudo foi conduzido com o objetivo de avaliar o cromo e restrições alimentares quantitativa e qualitativa como estratégias nutricionais alternativas a ractopamina para suínos machos castrados em terminação. Foram utilizados 50 suínos machos castrados, geneticamente similares, com peso inicial de 99,0 ± 4,3 kg e final de 117,2 ± 5,8 kg. Os animais foram distribuídos em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso em cinco tratamentos nutricionais (Controle; Rac = 10ppm de ractopamina; Cromo = 0,8mg de cromo levedura; Qualit = restrição qualitativa com menos 7,5% de energia líquida na dieta e Quanti = redução quantitativa de 15% no fornecimento de ração), com cinco repetições e dois animais por repetição. A suplementação de cromo e a restrição alimentar quantitativa reduziram (P < 0,05) os consumos de ração, lisina digestível, energia líquida e proteína bruta. O cromo, a ractopamina e a restrição quantitativa melhoraram (P < 0,05) a conversão alimentar. A suplementação de cromo, ractopamina e as restrições alimentares não influenciam (P < 0,05) as características de carcaça dos suínos. A restrição alimentar quantitativa e a suplementação de 0,8 mg de cromo levedura se apresentam como potenciais alternativas para a substituição da ractopamina nas dietas.

Resumo: Acidentes na infância têm uma alta taxa de morbidade e mortalidade e, muitas vezes, podem ser evitados, o que reforça a importância de medidas educacionais para evitar lesões não intencionais. O objetivo foi identificar e descrever estratégias educacionais úteis para a prevenção de acidentes infantis no contexto da comunidade. Essa revisão sistemática foi orientada pelo PRISMA (2020) e registrada na plataforma PROSPERO (ID: CRD42024500956). Uma estratégia de busca foi desenvolvida combinando os descritores “Accident Prevention” (prevenção de acidentes), “Child” (criança) e “Health Education” (educação em saúde) com o operador booleano AND, aplicado às bases de dados PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, LILACS e SciELO. Foram localizados 5.037 estudos, incluindo artigos observacionais publicados entre 2018-2023, com crianças de 0 a 12 anos e/ou seus pais/cuidadores. A qualidade dos estudos foi avaliada considerando os critérios dos instrumentos Qualitative Studies Checklist e Research Triangle Institute Item Bank. A amostra bibliográfica consistiu em 30 artigos, em sua maioria classificados como de alta qualidade, com uma população de 4.510 adultos e 54.190 crianças de vários países. Foram descritas estratégias educacionais para a prevenção de acidentes, voltadas para pais e responsáveis, crianças e ambos. Esta revisão, que aborda estratégias educacionais inovadoras para a prevenção de acidentes infantis, destaca abordagens lúdicas para crianças e métodos visuais para cuidadores. A implementação enfrenta desafios relacionados à avaliação e a fatores socioeconômicos, tornando critérios rigorosos e acompanhamentos prolongados importantes para a eficácia contínua.

Resumen: Los accidentes en la infancia tienen una alta tasa de morbimortalidad y, muchas veces, son prevenibles, por lo que refuerza la importancia de medidas educativas para prevenir lesiones no intencionales. El objetivo de estudio fue identificar y describir estrategias educativas útiles para la prevención de accidentes en la infancia en el contexto comunitario. Esta revisión sistemática fue guiada por PRISMA (2020) y registrada en la plataforma PROSPERO (ID: CRD42024500956). Se realizó una búsqueda combinando los descriptores “Accident Prevention” (prevención de accidentes), “Child” (niño) y “Health Education” (educación en salud) con el operador booleano AND, aplicado a las bases de datos PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, LILACS y SciELO. Se encontraron 5.037 estudios, que incluye artículos observacionales publicados entre 2018-2023, con niños de 0 a 12 años y/o sus padres/cuidadores. La calidad de los estudios se evaluó considerando los criterios de los instrumentos Qualitative Studies Checklist y Research Triangle Institute Item Bank. La muestra bibliográfica consistió en 30 artículos, en su mayoría clasificados como de alta calidad, realizados con una población de 4.510 adultos y 54.190 niños de varios países. Se describieron estrategias educativas para la prevención de accidentes dirigidas a padres y tutores, niños o ambos. Esta revisión aborda estrategias educativas innovadoras para la prevención de accidentes en la infancia y destaca los enfoques lúdicos para los niños y las técnicas visuales para los cuidadores. La aplicación se enfrenta a desafíos relacionados con la evaluación y los factores socioeconómicos, por lo que los criterios estrictos y los seguimientos prolongados son importantes para mantener su eficacia.

Abstract: Accidents in childhood have a high morbidity and mortality rate and are often preventable, which reinforces the importance of educational measures to prevent unintentional injuries. This study aimed to identify and describe useful educational strategies for preventing childhood accidents in communities. This systematic review was guided by PRISMA (2020) and registered on the PROSPERO platform (ID: CRD42024500956). A search strategy was developed by combining the descriptors “Accident Prevention”, “Child”, and “Health Education” with the Boolean operator AND, applied to the PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, LILACS, and SciELO databases. A total of 5,037 studies were located, including observational articles published from 2018 to 2023, with children aged 0-12 years and/or their parents/caregivers. The quality of the studies was assessed based on the Qualitative Studies Checklist and the Research Triangle Institute Item Bank instruments. The bibliographic sample consisted of 30 articles, mostly classified as high quality, with a population of 4,510 adults and 54,190 children from various countries. Educational strategies for accident prevention were described, aimed at parents and guardians, children, and both. This review, addressing innovative educational strategies for preventing childhood accidents, highlights playful approaches for children and visual methods for caregivers. Implementation faces challenges related to evaluation and socioeconomic factors, making rigorous criteria and prolonged follow-ups important for continuous effectiveness.

Resumo Este artigo objetivou analisar o grau de implantação do planejamento regional, considerando como condição traçadora os fluxos assistenciais para o câncer de colo de útero, em uma região de saúde do SUS baiano. Trata-se de um estudo avaliativo, do tipo avaliação da implantação do planejamento regionalizado em saúde, a partir de um estudo de caso da Região de Saúde de Vitória da Conquista (RSVC), Bahia. Realizaram-se 29 entrevistas com gestores e representantes da Comissão Intergestores Regional (CIR) e foram analisados 103 documentos. A matriz avaliativa subsidiou a mensuração do grau de implantação do planejamento pelos municípios, considerada incipiente, com três municípios apresentando grau intermediário (M1, M2 e M3); apenas M4 atingiu o grau avançado. Observou-se o caráter político nas tomadas de decisão persistente, preterindo-se a análise técnica e, consequentemente, não favorecendo as ações de monitoramento do acesso, que foram pontuais, e reduzindo a capacidade de controle e negociação junto aos prestadores de serviços privados. Os desafios da gestão, organização sistêmica e contexto político regional foram determinantes para a incipiente implantação do planejamento ante a incoerência entre instituições e características desfavoráveis à integração intermunicipal, sendo necessárias ações estratégicas para fortalecer a capacidade de planejamento integrado entre municípios.

Abstract This article aimed to analyze the degree of implementation of regional planning, considering care flows for cervical cancer as a defining condition, in a health region of the SUS in Bahia. This is an evaluative study, evaluating the implementation of regionalized health planning, based on a case study of the Vitória da Conquista Health Region (RSVC), state of Bahia. Twenty-nine interviews were carried out with managers and representatives of the Regional Intermanagers Commission (CIR) and 103 documents were analyzed. The evaluation matrix supported the measurement of the level of planning implementation by the municipalities, considered incipient, with three municipalities showing an intermediate level (M1, M2, and M3); only M4 reached an advanced grade. The political nature of persistent decision-making was observed, neglecting technical analysis and, consequently, not favoring access monitoring actions, which were punctual, and reducing the capacity for control and negotiation with private service providers. The challenges of management, systemic organization, and regional political context were decisive for the incipient implementation of planning given the incoherence between institutions and characteristics unfavorable to inter-municipal integration, making strategic actions necessary to strengthen the capacity for integrated planning between municipalities.

Abstract Objectives To evaluate outcomes of oral food challenge (OFC) test to assess tolerance in infants with non-IgE-mediated cow's milk allergy (CMA) with gastrointestinal manifestations and explore clinical data predictive of these outcomes. Methods Single-center retrospective study including infants (age < 12 months) who were referred for CMA between 2000 and 2018 and underwent OFC on follow-up. A univariate logistic regression test was performed to evaluate variables associated with the outcomes of the follow-up OFC test. Results Eighty-two patients were included, 50% were male. Eighteen patients had a positive OFC test (22%). Most patients had presented with hematochezia (77%). The median age of symptom onset was 30 days. Two-thirds of the patients were on appropriate infant formula (extensively hydrolyzed or amino acid-based formula), exclusively or in association with breastfeeding. The median time on an elimination diet before the OFC test was 8 months (Q1 6 - Q3 11 months). All cases with positive follow-up OFC tests (n= 18) had been exposed to cow's milk-based formula before the first clinical manifestation of CMA. Five out of eight cases with Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES) had positive OFC tests. Exposure to cow's milk-based formula before diagnosis, a history of other food allergies, hematochezia and diarrhea were predictors of a positive OFC test. ABSTRACT Rationale: Evidence about long-term sequelae after hospitalization for acute respiratory distress syndrome due to COVID-19 is still scarce. Purpose: To evaluate changes in pulmonary, cardiac, and renal function and in quality of life after hospitalization for acute respiratory distress syndrome secondary to COVID-19. Methods: This will be a multicenter case–control study of 220 participants. Eligible are patients who are hospitalized for acute respiratory distress syndrome due to COVID-19. In the control group, individuals with no history of hospitalization in the last 12 months or long-term symptoms of COVID-19 will be selected. All individuals will be subjected to pulmonary spirometry with a carbon monoxide diffusion test, chest tomography, cardiac and renal magnetic resonance imaging with gadolinium, ergospirometry, serum and urinary creatinine, total protein, and urinary microalbuminuria, in addition to quality-of-life questionnaires. Patients will be evaluated 12 months after hospital discharge, and controls will be evaluated within 90 days of inclusion in the study. For all the statistical analyses, p < 0.05 is the threshold for significance. Results: The primary outcome of the study will be the pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide measured after 12 months. The other parameters of pulmonary, cardiac, and renal function and quality of life are secondary outcomes. RESUMO Fundamento: As evidências acerca das sequelas a longo prazo após internação por síndrome do desconforto respiratório agudo por COVID-19 ainda são escassas. Objetivo: Avaliar alterações nas funções pulmonar, cardíaca e renal e na qualidade de vida após internação por síndrome do desconforto respiratório agudo secundária à COVID-19. Métodos: Trata-se de estudo multicêntrico, caso-controle, incluindo 220 participantes. Os casos serão definidos como pacientes hospitalizados por síndrome do desconforto respiratório agudo devido à COVID-19. No Grupo Controle, serão selecionados indivíduos sem histórico de hospitalização nos últimos 12 meses ou sintomas a longo prazo de COVID-19. ABSTRACT The Removable Partial Denture stands as an effective rehabilitation choice for patients who have undergone partial maxillectomy surgery due to maxillary tumors, involving the partial surgical removal of the maxillary bone. Removable partial denture are meticulously designed to restore masticatory, phonetic, and aesthetic functions, thereby contributing significantly to enhancing self-esteem and aiding patients in resuming social activities. During the patient’s history-taking phase, it is of paramount importance to assess the patient’s overall health, psychological state, expectations, and limitations. Ensuring regular follow-ups is imperative to prevent complications and to guarantee the durability of the prosthesis. Prosthetic planning constitutes a critical phase and can pose challenges, especially in achieving proper retention, stability, and suitable supports. Factors such as the defect size, the number of remaining teeth, and the amount of remaining bone structures can influence the treatment prognosis. It is crucial to emphasize that lack of adequate planning can lead to rehabilitation failures, resulting in discomfort, compromised functionality, and even potential harm to the patient’s health. In this context, this study aims to present a successful clinical case of a patient who underwent partial maxillectomy and was rehabilitated through a Removable Partial Denture fixed with clasps on the entire left upper hemi-arch. RESUMO A prótese parcial removível é uma opção eficaz de reabilitação para pacientes que passaram por cirurgia de maxilectomia parcial em decorrência de tumores maxilares, ou seja, remoção cirúrgica parcial do osso maxilar. A prótese parcial removível deve ser projetada para recuperar as funções mastigatória, fonética e estética, contribuindo assim na melhoria da autoestima e ajudando o paciente a retornar às atividades sociais. Durante a anamnese, é de grande importância verificar o estado geral e psicológico do paciente, suas expectativas e limitações, garantir o acompanhamento frequente para evitar complicações e garantir a durabilidade da prótese. O planejamento protético é uma etapa crítica e pode apresentar desafios, especialmente na obtenção de retenção, estabilidade e suportes adequados. Fatores como o tamanho do defeito, o número de dentes remanescentes e a quantidade de estruturas ósseas remanescentes podem interferir no prognóstico do tratamento. É importante ressaltar que a falta de planejamento pode levar a falhas na reabilitação, resultando em desconforto, má funcionalidade e até mesmo danos à saúde do paciente. Nesse contexto, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar um caso clínico de sucesso de uma paciente que foi submetida a uma maxilectomia parcial e reabilitada por meio de uma prótese parcial removível fixada por grampos em todo o hemiarco superior esquerdo. ABSTRACT The use of tank mixtures has long been a practice in the phytosanitary management of agricultural crops. However, when different molecules are mixed in a tank, interactions may occur that reduce the efficiency of the products and cause a loss of selectivity in the crops. The aim of this study was to evaluate selectivity in maize, with a tank mixture of different phytosanitary products recommended for use with the crop. The following products were used: herbicides - Sanson®, Soberan®, Callisto®, Zapp Pro®; fungicides - Priori Xtra®, Nativo®, Tebufort®, Aproach Prima®; insecticides - Connect®, Lorsban® 480 BR, Karate Zeon®; and nutrition - Kellus Manganese®, Kellus Blindex®. The experimental units consisted of 5-litre pots, containing two plants per pot, with the products applied at phenological stage V6. Assessments were made of phytotoxicity, transient chlorophyll a fluorescence, chlorophyll content and shoot dry weight. The data obtained in the experiment were submitted to ANOVA (p ≤ 0.05), and when significant, to the Scott-Knott test (p ≤ 0.05). The maize crop suffered phytotoxicity of up to 30%, with the plants recovering from 28 DAA. The phytotoxicity was caused by mixing the different products in the spraying solution, mainly due to the synergism caused by the mixture of the herbicides nicosulfuron and tembotrione with the insecticide chlorpyrifos and the fertiliser Kellus Manganese®, which aggravated the incompatibility of some treatments. ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the sensation of pain and the range of mandibular movements of adult individuals with temporomandibular disorder, before and after the application of the athletic tape. Method This is a double-blind randomized clinical trial, in which 22 adults with temporomandibular disorder participated, randomly allocated into two groups, with group A comprising 10 women and one man (mean age 28.2±8.3 years) and group B comprising nine women and two men (mean age 26.2±3.9 years). Group A was submitted to the application of the athletic tape on the masseter with 40% stretch and the group B to the application of the athletic tape on the masseter without stretching. All participants underwent the application of the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD). Pain threshold assessment was performed using an algometer to apply pressure to measurement points. The measurement of mandibular movements was performed using a caliper. The athletic tape was glued using the I technique, with a fixed point over the insertion and a movable point over the origin of the masseter muscle. Participants remained with the athletic tape for 24 hours and were re-evaluated. Results There was pain relief in the group A in the temporomandibular joint on the right and at the origin of the masseter on the left. The group B showed a reduction in pain in the left anterior temporal region. No differences were found in mandibular movements after intervention, as well as no difference was found in the comparison by groups. Conclusion The use of the athletic tape over the masseter muscle, with stretching, for 24 hours produced relief from the sensation of pain, on the origin of the right masseter and in the right temporomandibular joint, and, without stretching, in the left anterior temporal muscle. RESUMO Objetivo Analisar a sensação de dor e amplitude dos movimentos mandibulares de indivíduos adultos com disfunção temporomandibular, antes e após aplicação da bandagem elástica por 24 horas. Método Trata-se de um ensaio clínico randomizado duplo-cego, do qual participaram 22 sujeitos adultos com disfunção temporomandibular, alocados aleatoriamente em dois grupos, sendo grupo A composto por 10 mulheres e um homem (média de idade de 28,2±8,3 anos) e grupo B por nove mulheres e dois homens (média de idade de 26,2±3,9 anos). Todos os participantes foram submetidos à aplicação do Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD). Foi realizada a avaliação do limiar da dor, com uso de um algômetro, para aplicação da pressão no masseter e temporal e medição dos movimentos mandibulares, com paquímetro. O grupo A foi submetido à aplicação da bandagem sobre o músculo masseter com estiramento de 40% e o grupo B sem estiramento. A colagem da bandagem foi realizada, com corte em “I”, com ponto fixo sobre a inserção e ponto móvel sobre a origem do músculo masseter. Os participantes permaneceram com a bandagem por 24 horas e foram reavaliados. Resultados Houve alívio da dor no grupo A na articulação temporomandibular à direita e na origem do masseter à esquerda. O grupo B apresentou redução da dor em região de temporal anterior à esquerda. Não foram encontradas diferenças nos movimentos mandibulares após intervenção, bem como não houve diferença na comparação entre os grupos. Conclusão O uso da bandagem sobre o masseter, por 24 horas, com estiramento, produziu alívio da dor na origem do masseter direito e na região da articulação temporomandibular direita e, sem estiramento, no temporal anterior esquerdo. ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro gas production from three pearl millet cultivars submitted to four nitrogen levels. The treatments consisted of three pearl millet cultivars (ADR 500, ADR 7020, and LABH 70732) and four nitrogen levels (0, 50, 100, and 200 kg/ha), using urea as the nitrogen source. A 3 x 4 factorial experimental design, employing a randomized block setup, was used to assess both gas production and digestibility. No interaction was observed between nitrogen doses and fermentative parameters on in vitro gas production from the dry matter of pearl millet cultivars. Nitrogen had no impact on the dry matter content or chemical composition of the cultivars. Consistency prevailed in the chemical composition across the various cultivars, a trend that extended to the gas production rates for both soluble and insoluble contents. Notably, nitrogen fertilizer exerted an influence on the fermentation pattern of organic matter, gas production, and lag time for the cultivars. RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar a produção “in vitro” de gás de três cultivares de milheto forrageiro sob adubação nitrogenada. Os tratamentos foram constituídos por três cultivares de milheto: (ADR 500, ADR 7020 e LABH 70732) e quatro doses de N(ureia) (0; 50; 100 e 200 kg/ha). Para as avaliações da produção de gases e digestibilidade o delineamento experimental foi blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 3 x 4, com quatro repetições. Não houve interação entre as doses de adubação nitrogenada e os parâmetros fermentativos da produção de gases “in vitro” da matéria seca das cultivares de milheto. A adubação nitrogenada não influenciou os teores de matéria seca ou a composição bromatológica das cultivares. Não houve diferenças na composição bromatológica entre as cultivares. O mesmo foi observado para as taxas de produção de gás a partir do conteúdo solúvel e insolúvel. A adubação nitrogenada influenciou o padrão de fermentação, a produção de gases e o tempo de colonização por bactérias da matéria orgânica das três cultivares. ABSTRACT Objective: To examine the physical function and respiratory muscle strength of patients - who recovered from critical COVID-19 – after intensive care unit discharge to the ward on Days one (D1) and seven (D7), and to investigate variables associated with functional impairment. Methods: This was a prospective cohort study of adult patients with COVID-19 who needed invasive mechanical ventilation, non-invasive ventilation or high-flow nasal cannula and were discharged from the intensive care unit to the ward. Participants were submitted to Medical Research Council sum-score, handgrip strength, maximal inspiratory pressure, maximal expiratory pressure, and short physical performance battery tests. Participants were grouped into two groups according to their need for invasive ventilation: the Invasive Mechanical Ventilation Group (IMV Group) and the Non-Invasive Mechanical Ventilation Group (Non-IMV Group). Results: Patients in the IMV Group (n = 31) were younger and had higher Sequential Organ Failure Assessment scores than those in the Non-IMV Group (n = 33). The short physical performance battery scores (range 0 - 12) on D1 and D7 were 6.1 ± 4.3 and 7.3 ± 3.8, respectively for the Non-Invasive Mechanical Ventilation Group, and 1.3 ± 2.5 and 2.6 ± 3.7, respectively for the IMV Group. The prevalence of intensive care unit-acquired weakness on D7 was 13% for the Non-IMV Group and 72% for the IMV Group. The maximal inspiratory pressure, maximal expiratory pressure, and handgrip strength increased on D7 in both groups, but the maximal expiratory pressure and handgrip strength were still weak. Only maximal inspiratory pressure was recovered (i.e., > 80% of the predicted value) in the Non-IMV Group. Female sex, and the need and duration of invasive mechanical were independently and negatively associated with the short physical performance battery score and handgrip strength. Conclusion: Patients who recovered from critical COVID-19 and who received invasive mechanical ventilation presented greater disability than those who were not invasively ventilated. However, they both showed marginal functional improvement during early recovery, regardless of the need for invasive mechanical ventilation. This might highlight the severity of disability caused by SARS-CoV-2. RESUMO Objetivo: Examinar a função física e a força muscular respiratória de pacientes que se recuperaram da COVID-19 grave após a alta da unidade de terapia intensiva para a enfermaria nos Dias 1 e 7 e investigar as variáveis associadas ao comprometimento funcional. Métodos: Trata-se de estudo de coorte prospectivo de pacientes adultos com COVID-19 que necessitaram de ventilação mecânica invasiva, ventilação mecânica não invasiva ou cânula nasal de alto fluxo e tiveram alta da unidade de terapia intensiva para a enfermaria. Os participantes foram submetidos aos testes Medical Research Council sum-score, força de preensão manual, pressão inspiratória máxima, pressão expiratória máxima e short physical performance battery. Os participantes foram agrupados em dois grupos conforme a necessidade de ventilação mecânica invasiva: o Grupo Ventilação Mecânica Invasiva (Grupo VMI) e o Grupo Não Ventilação Mecânica Invasiva (Grupo Não VMI). Resultados: Os pacientes do Grupo VMI (n = 31) eram mais jovens e tinham pontuações do Sequential Organ Failure Assessment mais altas do que os do Grupo VMI (n = 33). As pontuações do short physical performance battery (intervalo de zero a 12) nos Dias 1 e 7 foram 6,1 ± 4,3 e 7,3 ± 3,8, respectivamente para o Grupo Não VMI, e 1,3 ± 2,5 e 2,6 ± 3,7, respectivamente para o Grupo VMI. A prevalência de fraqueza adquirida na unidade de terapia intensiva no Dia 7 foi de 13% para o Grupo Não VMI e de 72% para o Grupo VMI. A pressão inspiratória máxima, a pressão expiratória máxima e a força de preensão manual aumentaram no Dia 7 em ambos os grupos, porém a pressão expiratória máxima e a força de preensão manual ainda eram fracas. Apenas a pressão inspiratória máxima foi recuperada (ou seja, > 80% do valor previsto) no Grupo Não VMI. As variáveis sexo feminino, e necessidade e duração da ventilação mecânica invasiva foram associadas de forma independente e negativa à pontuação do short physical performance battery e à força de preensão manual. Conclusão: Os pacientes que se recuperaram da COVID-19 grave e receberam ventilação mecânica invasiva apresentaram maior incapacidade do que aqueles que não foram ventilados invasivamente. No entanto, os dois grupos de pacientes apresentaram melhora funcional marginal durante a fase inicial de recuperação, independentemente da necessidade de ventilação mecânica invasiva. Abstract Background Patients with chronic limb threatening ischemia (CLTI) of the lower limbs (LL) undergo arteriography for revascularization surgery planning. Doppler ultrasound (DU) is non-invasive and can provide information about the distal arteries through measurement of the resistance index (RI). Objectives To correlate the Rutherford Angiographic Classification with the RI for assessment of the distal arterial bed of the LL. Methods A cross-sectional study, conducted at a public tertiary hospital with 120 patients with LL CLTI, from September 2019 to April 2022. The RI of arteries that were candidates for revascularization was compared with the images of the same arteries obtained using arteriography, using the Rutherford Angiographic Classification of the distal bed. Results A total of 120 LL were assessed in 120 patients with a mean age of 68.6 years. The sample was 50.0% male and 90.0% of the patients in the sample were classified as Rutherford category five. The RI values found for the arteries of the leg exhibited a statistically significant positive correlation with the Rutherford Classification (anterior tibial, p< 0.01; posterior tibial, p = 0.012 fibular, p = 0.034; and dorsalis pedis, p < 0.001). Conclusions In this study, RIs for the arteries of the leg measured using Doppler ultrasound exhibited a positive correlation with the Rutherford Classification. This index could be useful for assessment of the distal arterial bed of the lower limbs of patients with chronic limb threatening ischemia. Resumo Contexto Pacientes com isquemia crítica (IC) dos membros inferiores (MMII) precisam de arteriografia para o planejamento da cirurgia de revascularização. A ultrassonografia Doppler (UD) não é invasiva e, através da aferição do índice de resistência (IR), pode fornecer informações sobre as artérias distais. Objetivos Correlacionar a Classificação Angiográfica de Rutherford com o IR na avaliação do leito arterial distal dos MMII. Métodos Estudo transversal, realizado em hospital público terciário, com 120 pacientes portadores de IC dos MMII, entre setembro de 2019 a abril de 2022. Foi comparado o IR das artérias da perna passíveis de serem receptoras de revascularização com a imagem obtida através da arteriografia dessas artérias em acordo com a Classificação Angiográfica de leito distal de Rutherford. Resultados Foram avaliados 120 MMII em 120 pacientes com idade média de 68,6 anos. A amostra foi composta de 50,0% de pacientes do sexo masculino. Na amostra, 90,0% pacientes encontravam-se na classe cinco de Rutherford. Os valores do IR encontrados para as artérias de perna apresentaram uma correlação positiva, estatisticamente significativa, quando comparados com a Classificação de Rutherford (tibial anterior, p< 0,01; tibial posterior, p = 0,012 e fibular, p = 0,034 e artéria dorsal do pé, p < 0,001). Conclusões Neste estudo, os IRs das artérias da perna obtidos através da ultrassonografia Doppler apresentaram uma correlação positiva quando comparados à classificação de Rutherford.
