Este estudo foi realizado no contexto da Bacia Hidrográfica Taquari-Antas, no Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, e avalia a qualidade da água para consumo em 101 propriedades rurais, com foco na identificação de problemas em sua potabilidade, especialmente em relação à concentração excessiva de flúor, que é um problema conhecido na água desta região. O estudo envolve a coleta de amostras de água em propriedades rurais, uma pesquisa para compreender o uso da água e a percepção da qualidade pelos usuários, e análises da qualidade da água utilizando metodologias analíticas estabelecidas. Os resultados mostram que 58,4% das propriedades rurais investigadas apresentam problemas de potabilidade, sendo o excesso de flúor a preocupação mais prevalente, afetando 39,6% das propriedades. Abstract Access to safe drinking water is a fundamental human right and a critical component of sustainable development. This study is conducted in the context of the Taquari-Antas Hydrographic Basin, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and assesses the quality of drinking water in 101 rural properties, focusing on identifying problems of potability, especially regarding excessive fluoride concentration, which is a known problem for the water in this region. The study involves the collection of water samples from rural properties, a survey to understand water use and quality perception by users, and water quality analysis using established analytical methodologies. Results show that 58.4% of the investigated rural properties have potability issues, with excessive fluoride being the most prevalent concern, affecting 39.6% of properties. High fluoride levels have significant health implications, including dental and skeletal fluorosis, with global relevance. To address this issue, activated bone charcoal filtration systems were installed in ten properties, effectively reducing fluoride concentrations to within acceptable limits for human consumption. RESUMO: Este estudo avaliou o efeito do extrato de tanino de Acacia mearnsii na temperatura intravaginal, na produção e na composição do leite de vacas Holandesas mantidas em ambiente subtropical. O período de estudo foi de 29 dias e foram selecionadas 20 vacas multíparas Holandesas com produção média de leite de 50 ± 6 kg/dia e 147 ± 83 dias em leite. As vacas foram separadas em dois tratamentos: Controle (n = 10) não recebeu suplementação alimentar. Tanino (n = 10) recebeu Tanino Condensado (Tanac S.A., Montenegro, RS, Brasil) na dose de 0,19% de matéria seca (40 g/vaca/dia). Os animais foram monitorados quanto à produção e composição do leite, bem como à temperatura intravaginal. O índice de temperatura e umidade ambiental (ITU) foi monitorado. O ITU médio foi de 72,39 ± 0,69. A temperatura intravaginal média foi de 39,17 ± 0,14 °C no tratamento Tanino e 39,03 ± 0,14 °C no tratamento Controle (P > 0,05). ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the effect of tannin extract from Acacia mearnsii on intravaginal temperature, production and milk composition of Holstein cows in a subtropical environment. The study period was 29 days and 20 multiparous Holstein cows were selected with an average milk production of 50 ± 6 kg/day and 147 ± 83 days in milk. The cows were separated into two treatments: Control (n = 10) did not receive dietary supplementation. Tannin (n = 10) received Condensed Tannin (Tanac S.A., Montenegro, RS, Brazil) at a dose of 0.19% dry matter (40 g/cow/day). Animals were monitored for milk production and composition as well as intravaginal temperature. The environmental temperature and humidity index (THI) were monitored. The mean THI was 72.39 ± 0.69. The mean intravaginal temperature was 39.17 ± 0.14 °C in the Tannin treatment and 39.03 ± 0.14°C in the Control treatment (P > 0.05). The animals in the Tannin treatment exhibited an intravaginal temperature of 39.2 °C at THI 69.38, and the Control treatment exhibited the same temperature at THI 70.16 (receiver operating characteristic (ROC); P < 0.01). Milk production was higher in the Tannin treatment than in the Control treatment (51.38 ± 0.90 kg/day and 49.94 ± 1.05 kg/day, respectively; P < 0.01). Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos das diferentes formas farmacêuticas contendo Butafosfan sob a produção de leite e o metabolismo de vacas leiteiras durante o pós-parto. A partir de ensaios in vitro e in vivo, duas formas farmacêuticas foram testadas em animais de produção. Trinta e seis vacas da raça Holandês, foram divididas aleatoriamente em três grupos: Grupo BUT (n=12), que recebeu solução aquosa de Butafosfan (150 mg mL-1); BUTSR (n=12), que recebeu uma formulação de liberação prolongada de Butafosfan (150 mg mL-1) e o Grupo CL (Controle; n=12), que recebeu solução fisiológica de cloreto de sódio. Todos os grupos, tiveram administração de três doses subcutâneas de 30 mL. A aplicação foi realizada no dia do parto (dia 0) e nos dias 3 e 7 após o parto. Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different pharmaceutical forms of Butaphosphan on milk production and the metabolism in dairy cows during the postpartum period. After in vitro and pharmacokinetic assays, thirty-six multiparous cows belonging to the Holstein breed, were randomly divided into three groups: Group BUT (n=12), that received an aqueous solution of Butaphosphan (150 mg/mL); Group BUTSR (n=12), that received a sustained-release formulation of Butaphosphan (150 mg/mL) and Group Control (CL ; n=12), that received saline solution (NaCl 0.9 %). ABSTRACT Since the industrial revolution, human activities have emitted approximately 2,500 Gt of CO2, increasing the concentration of atmospheric CO2 by 50 % compared to pre-industrial levels. To better understand the potential for mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through proper management of degraded pasture areas, we conducted a systematic literature review and identified 23 publications reporting carbon sequestration values for pastures managed under different conditions in the south and southeast regions of Brazil. From this dataset, 17 publications considered to be in line with the research premises were selected to estimate the potential for soil carbon sequestration (SEQ) through pasture recovery in the southern region of Brazil, using conservative and regenerative agricultural management practices. Results show that managed pastures can sustain carbon sequestration rates of around 2.50 Mg C ha-1 yr-1 over approximately 20 years. However, due to the numerous variables influencing SEQ rates, the limited number of publications, and the lack of data for some variables among them, a more extensive analysis of publications and data is needed to establish causal and preponderance relationships regarding the effect of each variable on the found SEQ rates. Under current pasture occupation conditions in Brazil’s south region, it is estimated these areas could sequester between 0.433 and 1.273 Gt CO2 at the end of 20 years if managed under appropriate practices. These numbers are not representative to reduce atmospheric CO2 concentration from legacy emissions and significantly mitigate physical impacts of climate change, reinforcing the importance of prioritizing the reduction of global GHG emissions as the primary mitigation strategy. Abstract: This explanatory study aimed to understand the role of symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress in relation to the type of active and passive use of Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The sample was stratified and randomized, In total, 381 college students participated in the study, of which 72% were women with a mean age of 23.9 years. The instruments used were: sociodemographic and social media use data questionnaire and DASS-21. RESUMO A madeira de Paulownia tomentosa Steud. tem potencial para o desenvolvimento de produtos com alto valor agregado. A madeira é leve e macia, com excelentes propriedades de usinagem e acabamento, e por isso é usada para fabricação de materiais compósitos, chapas de madeira, móveis, papel e instrumentos musicais. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as características físicas e químicas da madeira de P. tomentosa, a fim de recomendar seu uso para a obtenção e geração de bioprodutos. Cinco árvores, com treze anos de idade, foram abatidas para retirada de discos em diferentes alturas, os quais foram processados em cunhas e serragem. Para a determinação da densidade básica, foi empregada a metodologia descrita na norma NBR 11941. Os teores de extrativos totais, ligninas e holocelulose foram determinados segundo as normas da Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper industry - TAPPI. Análises de espectrometria no infravermelho, de química imediata (materiais voláteis, carbono fixo e cinzas) e termogravimétrica da madeira também foram realizadas. Os resultados obtidos para a madeira de P. tomentosa foram: densidade básica de 0,269 g/cm3, 17,3% de extrativos totais, 17,1% da lignina Klason, 1,15 de relação S/G e teores de holocelulose de 67,7%. A análise química imediata da madeira resultou em 86,5% de materiais voláteis, 12,9% de carbono fixo e 0,6 % de cinzas. A baixa densidade básica da madeira de P. tomentosa, bem como o baixo teor de lignina e de carbono fixo da madeira são características desfavoráveis do ponto de vista energético. Por outro lado, devido ao alto teor de holocelulose e baixo teor de lignina, a madeira de P. tomentosa se mostra promissora para a produção de bioprodutos de base celulósica, como a nanocelulose. ABSTRACT The wood of Paulownia tomentosa Steud. has the potential to develop products with high-added value. The wood is lightweight and soft, with excellent machining and finishing properties, and is therefore used to produce composite materials, wood panels, furniture, paper, and musical instruments. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of Paulownia tomentosa wood in order to recommend its use for the production and generation of bioproducts. Five trees, thirteen years old, were harvested to obtain discs at different heights, which were then processed into wedges and sawdust. The methodology described in standard NBR 11941 was employed to determine the basic density. The total extractive, lignin, and holocellulose levels were determined according to the standards of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry. Infrared spectrometry, immediate chemistry analysis (volatile materials, fixed carbon content, and ash content), and thermogravimetric analysis of the wood were also performed. The results obtained for Paulownia tomentosa wood were as follows: a basic density of 0.269 g/cm3, 17.3% of total extractives, 17.1% of Klason lignin, an S/G ratio of 1.15, and holocellulose content of 67.7%. The immediate chemical analysis of the wood resulted in 86.5% of volatile matter, 12.9% of fixed carbon, and 0.6% of ash content. Resumo Antecedentes A distinção entre neuronopatias sensitivas (SN) e polineuropatias sensitivas (SP) e multineuropatias sensitivas (SM) é importante para a investigação etiológica e para o prognóstico. Contudo, esta tarefa é desafiadora na prática clínica. Hipotetizou-se que a avaliação das ondas-F pode ser útil, por ser capaz de detectar envolvimento motor nas SP e SM, mas não nas SN. Objetivo Determinar se as ondas-F podem ajudar a distinguir entre SN, SP e SM. Métodos Selecionou-se 21 pacientes com SP (12 diabetes mellitus, 4 ATTR-FAP e 4 com outras neuropatias), 22 com SM (22 hanseníases) e 26 com SN (13 imunomediadas, 10 idiopáticas e 3 com outras neuronopatias), de acordo com critérios clínicos, etiológicos e eletrofisiológicos. Para cada indivíduo, foi aferida a altura e foram aplicados 20 estímulos distais supramáximos nos nervos mediano, ulnar, fibular e tibial, bilateralmente, para registrar as ondas-F. Uma comparação foi feita, por grupo, das latências (mínimas e médias) e persistências pelos testes Kruskal-Wallis e Bonferroni. Valores de p < 0.05 foram considerados estatisticamente significativos. Abstract Background The distinction between sensory neuronopathies (SN), which is by definition purely sensory, and sensory polyneuropathies (SP) and sensory multineuropathies (SM) is important for etiologic investigation and prognosis estimation. However, this task is often challenging in clinical practice. We hypothesize that F-wave assessment might be helpful, since it is able to detect subtle signs of motor involvement, which are found in SP and SM, but not in SN. Objective The aim of the present study was to determine whether F-waves are useful to distinguish SN from SP and SM. Methods We selected 21 patients with SP (12 diabetes mellitus, 4 transthyretin familial amyloid polyneuropathy, 4 others), 22 with SM (22 leprosy), and 26 with SN (13 immune-mediated, 10 idiopathic, 3 others) according to clinical-electrophysiological-etiological criteria. Resumo Este artigo tem por objetivo analisar o controle do Congresso Nacional sobre as agências reguladoras federais por meio da propositura de projetos de decretos legislativos (PDL) nos últimos 22 anos (1997-2019). O artigo analisa o fundamento e a frequência de PDLs como estratégia utilizada pelo Poder Legislativo para intervir na produção normativa dessas agências. Apresenta, além disso, fatores materiais e burocráticos que influenciam o seu desenvolvimento, bem como eventuais reações das agências à propositura de PDLs. Para tanto, foram selecionados 158 projetos em trâmite ou que já tramitaram pela Câmara dos Deputados desde que a primeira agência reguladora foi criada em 1996. Abstract This paper aims to analyze the Congress’s control over federal regulatory agencies through the proposal of legislative decree bills (PDL) in the last twenty-two years (1997-2019). The paper analyzes the justification and frequency of the usage of PDLs as a strategy of the Legislative Power to intervene in the normative production of these agencies. It explores, additionally, the factors that influence the development of such oversight, as well as possible agencies’ reactions to the PDLs. The paper looks into 158 projects currently in progress or that have already been processed by the Chamber of Deputies since the first regulatory agency was created in 1996. RESUMO Esta pesquisa objetivou descrever a análise custo-benefício da adoção de terapia seletiva para mastite clínica a partir da identificação de patógenos por meio da cultura em placas na fazenda. Foi realizado um levantamento de casos clínicos de mastite no banco de dados de uma fazenda com 500 vacas Holandesas em lactação, durante o período de setembro de 2017 à outubro de 2019. Foram avaliadas as variáveis frequência de casos, principais patógenos identificados, custos com antibioticoterapia e descarte de leite foram, as quais foram comparados entre um ano antes (P1) e após (P2), à adoção da terapia seletiva na fazenda. Durante o período do estudo, foram identificados 599 casos de mastite clínica, sendo 361 em P1 e 238 em P2. O custo médio das terapias foi de US74,33 e US91,82 para P1 e P2. Considerando os dois anos de estudo, o custo estimado do tratamento da mastite clínica foi de US45.444,31, dos quais US27.559,97 foram gastos em P1 e US17.884,34 em P2. ABSTRACT This research aims to describe the cost-benefit analysis of selective therapy adoption for clinical mastitis based on the identification of pathogens using on-farm culture system. A survey of clinical mastitis cases was carried out in the database of a dairy herd with 500 lactating Holstein cows, during the period of September 2017 to October 2019. Variables such as frequency of cases, main pathogens identified, costs with antibiotic therapies and milk disposal were evaluated and compared between one year before (P1) and after (P2), the farm's selective therapy adoption. During the study period, 599 cases of clinical mastitis were identified, 361 in P1 and 238 in P2. The average cost of therapies was US74.33 and US91.82 for P1 and P2. Considering the two years of the study, the estimated cost of treating clinical mastitis was US45,444.31, of which US$27,559.97 were spent in P1 and US17,884.34 in P2. Abstract This article discuss the possibility of using green bonds as a way to promote sustainable family agriculture, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to which Brazil has made a commitment since the signing of 2016 Paris Agreement. This study aims to analyze the viability of using green bonds as a way to promote sustainable family agriculture, seeking to achieve the objectives of sustainable agriculture proposed by SDG number 2 of the 2030 Agenda. Abstract Introduction: High-volume corticosteroid nasal irrigation is a treatment option in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. In Brazil, alternatives are used to optimize its cost and popularize its use, such as 1% compounded budesonide drops or betamethasone cream, and it is necessary to study these treatment modalities. Objective: To evaluate the clinical response of nasal irrigation with 1% compounded budesonide drops or betamethasone cream compared to nasal sprays utilized in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. Methods: This was a retrospective observational study with 257 patients. One hundred and eight patients using corticosteroid nasal irrigation (292 treatment cycles) and 149 using corticosteroid nasal spray (300 treatment cycles) were included. Evaluation of subjective improvement, adverse events, exacerbations, and objective assessments with SNOT-22 and Lund-Kennedy endoscopic score were performed, in addition to sub-analyses related to nasal polyps and previous surgery. Results: Corticosteroid nasal irrigation and corticosteroid nasal spray improved the Lund–Kennedy endoscopic score, with more adverse events in the corticosteroid nasal irrigation group. Previous surgery increased corticosteroid nasal irrigation improvement, with greater subjective improvement and fewer exacerbations. 1% compounded budesonide drops were better than betamethasone cream in the Lund-Kennedy endoscopic score, with fewer adverse events. A 1,000 μg dose of 1% compounded budesonide drops was more effective than 500 μg. Conclusion: Corticosteroid nasal irrigation was effective in improving the Lund-Kennedy endoscopic score in chronic rhinosinusitis, especially in patients with nasal polyps and previous surgery, in addition to promoting a higher rate of subjective improvement and fewer exacerbations than corticosteroid nasal spray, but with more adverse events. 1% compounded budesonide drops improved the Lund-Kennedy endoscopic score with fewer adverse events than betamethasone cream, particularly at higher doses (1000 μg). RESUMO O acesso à água e ao esgotamento sanitário é fundamental para o combate à transmissão da COVID-19. Nesse contexto, o objetivo do estudo foi avaliar as condições de abastecimento de água, coleta e tratamento de esgoto nos municípios com maior número de casos de COVID-19 no Brasil, considerando-se ainda, o papel da regulação e o desafio de atingir as metas do Objetivo de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS) 6. A pesquisa justifica-se pela natureza inédita da promoção do conhecimento por meio de dados entre esses fatores. Inicialmente, o trabalho correlacionou o ODS 6 com o abastecimento de água e esgotamento sanitário por meio de indicadores do Sistema Nacional de Informações sobre Saneamento (SNIS), cruzando os dados com os municípios com mais casos de COVID-19 para a avaliação da performance e do papel da regulação. Assim, observando-se as cidades com maior número de casos confirmados de COVID-19, ficou evidente a ligação entre a pandemia e o ranking dos piores indicadores de água e esgoto. A falta desses serviços por si só não promove a doença, mas é um dos fatores que dificulta as medidas preventivas e pode favorecer sua dispersão, indicando a fragilidade das condições de saúde nesses locais. As porcentagens alcançadas foram de 45% para o ODS 6.1, de 25% para os ODS 6.2 e 6.3 e de 0% para o ODS 6.4, afetando principalmente as comunidades desfavorecidas com a maior proporção de casos confirmados de COVID-19. Diante disso, as agências reguladoras precisam transformar os indicadores de continuidade do abastecimento de água e esgoto no Brasil, condição aplicável aos países em desenvolvimento.

ABSTRACT Access to water and sanitation is essential to combat the transmission of COVID-19. In this context, the objective of the study was to evaluate the conditions of water supply, collection and sewage treatment in the municipalities with the highest number of COVID-19 cases in Brazil, also considering the role of regulation and the challenge of reaching the goals of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6. It is justified by the unprecedented nature of knowledge promotion through data among these factors. Initially, the work correlated SDG 6 with water supply and sanitation using indicators from the National Sanitation Information System (Sistema Nacional de Informações sobre Saneamento – SNIS), crossing the data with the municipalities with the most cases of COVID-19 to assess performance and the role of regulation. Thus, looking at the cities with the highest number of confirmed cases of COVID-19, the link between the pandemic and the ranking of the worst water and sanitation indicators became evident. The lack of these services alone does not promote the disease, but it is one of the factors that makes preventive measures difficult and may favor their dispersion and indicate the fragility of health conditions in these places. The percentages achieved were 45% for SDG 6.1, 25% for SDG 6.2 and 6.3 and 0% for SDG 6.4, mainly affecting disadvantaged communities with the highest proportion of confirmed cases of COVID-19. Therefore, regulatory agencies need to transform the indicators of continuity of water and sewage supply in Brazil, a condition applicable to developing countries.

Abstract Importance: Despite ambulation capacity being associated with a decreased level of physical activity and survival may be influenced by the functional capacity, studies have not addressed the association between ambulation capacity and death in patients hospitalized by COVID-19. Objective: To verify the functional, clinical, and sociodemographic risk factors associated with in-hospital death in individuals with severe COVID-19. Methods: It is a cohort retrospective study performed at a large tertiary hospital. Patients 18 years of age or more, of both sexes, hospitalized due to severe COVID-19 were included. Cases with dubious medical records and/or missing essential data were excluded. Patients were classified according to their ambulation capacity before the COVID-19 infection. Information regarding sociodemographic characteristics, in-hospital death, total hospital stays, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) stays, and the necessity of Mechanical Ventilation (MV) were collected from medical records and registered in a RedCap database. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to identify possible factors associated with the in-hospital death rate. Results: Data from 1110 participants were included in the statistical analysis. The median age of the patients was 57 (46‒66) years, 58.42% (n = 590) were male, and 61.73% (n = 602) were brown or black. The case fatality rate during hospitalization was 36.0% (n = 363). In-hospital death was associated with ambulation capacity; dependent ambulators (OR = 2.3; CI 95% = 1.2-4.4) and non-functional ambulation (OR = 1.9; CI 95% = 1.1-3.3), age [older adults (OR = 3.0; CI 95% = 1.9‒4.), ICU stays (OR = 1.4; CI 95% = 1.2‒1.4), immunosuppression (OR = 5.5 CI 95% = 2.3‒13.5) and mechanical ventilation (OR = 27.5; CI 95% = 12.0-62.9). Conclusion and relevance: Decreased ambulation capacity, age, length of ICU stay, immunosuppression, and mechanical ventilation was associated with a high risk of in-hospital death due to COVID-19.

Resumo A crise ecológica que vivemos afeta negativamente o planeta e aumenta as ameaças para todas as formas de vida que o habitam. O serviço social tem nos espaços socioambientais um importante, crescente e desafiador campo de intervenção. Para este elo entre o serviço social e o meio ambiente são necessários novos conhecimentos intelectuais e culturais, novas e múltiplas proposições e intervenções, e o compromisso de não ficar à margem das discussões e ações necessárias para intervir e promover uma abordagem ecossocial ativa, baseada na economia circular e alinhada com os Objetivos do Desenvolvimento Sustentável e os direitos humanos. O modelo Donut permite uma análise sistêmica e holística dos problemas e dificuldades que os profissionais têm pela frente, mas também permite refletir sobre os desafios e oportunidades que se colocam aos assistentes sociais numa época de incertezas e riscos sociais aumentados.

Abstract The ecological crisis that we are experiencing negatively affects the planet and increases the threats to all forms of life that inhabit it. Social work has an important, growing and challenging field of intervention in socio-environmental spaces. For this link between social work and the environment, new intellectual and cultural knowledge, new and multiple propositions and interventions are needed, and the commitment not to be left out of the discussions and actions necessary to intervene and promote an active ecosocial approach, based on circular economy and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and human rights. The Donut model allows for a systemic and holistic analysis of the problems and difficulties faced by professionals, but it also allows for reflection on the challenges and opportunities that social workers face at a time of heightened social uncertainty and risks.

RESUMO: O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar os efeitos dos diferentes níveis de substituição de milho moído por farinha de batata-doce na ingestão, digestibilidade, síntese de proteína microbiana e a retenção de Nitrogênio (N) em ovinos alimentados por dietas com base em silagem de milho. Foram utilizados oito ovinos machos castrados, mantidos em gaiolas metabólicas, divididos em quatro grupos no quadrado latino 4 x 4, totalizando quatro períodos de 15 dias cada. Os animais receberam proporções fixas de feno de aveia, silagem de milho e farelo de soja. O grupo controle (0%) recebeu apenas milho moído, enquanto os outros grupos receberam diferentes níveis de inclusão de farinha de batata doce (FBD) em substituição ao milho moído, nas proporções de 33%, 66% e 100%. Amostras de alimentos e sobras foram coletadas para avaliação do consumo e análise bromatológica. A urina foi coletada para avaliação da síntese proteica microbiana através dos derivados da purina (DP). As fezes foram coletadas para análise e estimativa da digestibilidade. Os grupos de 0% e 33% apresentaram menor consumo de fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) do que os grupos de 66% e 100%. Houve uma tendência (P = 0,07) de efeito dos tratamentos na ingestão de proteína bruta (PB) com efeito linear positivo significativo (P = 0,03). Houve uma tendência (P = 0,07) para os efeitos do tratamento na ingestão de N com um efeito linear positivo significativo (P = 0,03). Os demais parâmetros como excreção de N na urina (P = 0,91) e excreção de N nas fezes (P = 0,16) não foram afetados pela substituição do milho moído pela FBD. Além disso, não houve efeito na retenção de N (P = 0,43) e na eficiência do uso de N (P = 0,69). A adição de FBD a uma dieta em vez de milho não alterou os parâmetros das proteínas microbianas. A inclusão de farinha de batata-doce não causou alterações no metabolismo proteico dos animais, sugerindo que pode ser utilizada no lugar do milho.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the effects of different levels of substitution of ground corn by sweet potato flour on intake, digestibility, microbial protein synthesis and total Nitrogen (N) retention in sheep fed mixed diets based on corn silage. Eight castrated male sheep were used, kept in metabolic cages. The animals received fixed proportions of oat hay, corn silage and soybean meal. The control group (0%) received only ground corn, while the other groups received different levels of inclusion of sweet potato flour (SPF) to replace ground corn, in the proportions of 33%, 66%, and 100%. The 0% and 33% groups had lower neutral detergent fiber (NDF) intake than the 66% and 100% groups. There was a trend (P = 0.07) of effect of treatments on crude protein (CP) intake with a significant positive linear effect (P = 0.03). There was a trend (P = 0.07) for treatment effects in N intake with a significant positive linear effect (P = 0.03). The other parameters as urine N excretion (P = 0.91) and feces N excretion (P = 0.16) were not affected by the replacement of ground corn by SPF. Moreover, there was no effect on N retention (P = 0.43) and on efficiency of N use (P = 0.69). Adding SPF to a diet instead of corn did not alter the microbial protein parameters. The inclusion of sweet potato flour did not cause changes in the protein metabolism of animals, suggesting it can be used instead of corn.
