ABSTRACT Lippia alba (Mill.), popularly known bushy matgrass, is considered an aromatic and medicinal plant with physiotherapeutic characteristics, leading to its use in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Therefore, the study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition and yield of the essential oil of Lippia alba (Mill.) after the occurrence of frost in southern Brazil. The study was carried out in an experimental area located at the Federal University of Santa Maria, Frederico Westphalen Campus, in July 2014. The essential oil was extracted using the hydrodistillation technique for three hours after the start of boiling. The chemical composition of Lippia alba (Mill.) essential oil was identified through chromatographic analysis. The chemical composition of Lippia alba (Mill.) essential oil was not altered by frost. Resumo Antecedentes Encefalites autoimunes (EAIs) são um grupo de doenças inflamatórias caracterizadas pela presença de anticorpos contra antígenos neuronais e gliais, que ocasionam sintomas psiquiátricos subagudos, queixas de memória e distúrbios anormais do movimento. A maioria dos pacientes é jovem, e o atraso no tratamento está associado a pior prognóstico. Objetivo Com o apoio da Academia Brasileira de Neurologia (ABN) e da Sociedade Brasileira de Neurologia Infantil (SBNI), desenvolvemos um consenso sobre o diagnóstico e o tratamento da EAIs no Brasil utilizando a metodologia Delphi. Métodos Um total de 25 especialistas, incluindo neurologistas e neurologistas infantis, foram convidados a participar. Resultados Os especialistas concordaram que os pacientes com critérios de possíveis EAIs devem ser submetidos ao rastreio de anticorpos antineuronais no soro e no líquido cefalorraquidiano (LCR) por meio das técnicas de ensaio baseado em tecidos (tissue-based assay, TBA, em inglês) e ensaio baseado em células (cell-based assay, CBA, em inglês). As crianças também devem ser submetidas ao rastreio de de anticorpo contra a glicoproteína da mielina de oligodendrócitos (anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein, anti-MOG, em inglês). O tratamento deve ser iniciado dentro das primeiras 4 semanas dos sintomas, sendo as opções de primeira linha metilprednisolona combinada com imunoglobulina intravenosa (IGIV) ou plasmaférese. O tratamento de segunda linha inclui rituximabe e ciclofosfamida. Bortezomib e tocilizumab são opções de tratamento de terceira linha. A maioria das crises epilépticas nas EAIs são sintomáticas, e os fármacos anticrise podem ser desmamadas após a fase aguda. Em relação à encefalite antirreceptor de N-metil-D-aspartato (anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor, anti-NMDAR, em inglês), os especialistas concordaram que agentes imunossupressores orais não devem ser usados. Os pacientes devem ser avaliados na fase aguda e pós-aguda mediante escalas funcionais e cognitivas, como Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Modified Rankin Scale (mRS), e Clinical Assessment Scale in Autoimmune Encephalitis (CASE). Abstract Background Autoimmune encephalitis (AIE) is a group of inflammatory diseases characterized by the presence of antibodies against neuronal and glial antigens, leading to subacute psychiatric symptoms, memory complaints, and movement disorders. The patients are predominantly young, and delays in treatment are associated with worse prognosis. Objective With the support of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology (Academia Brasileira de Neurologia, ABN) and the Brazilian Society of Child Neurology (Sociedade Brasileira de Neurologia Infantil, SBNI), a consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of AIE in Brazil was developed using the Delphi method. Methods A total of 25 panelists, including adult and child neurologists, participated in the study. Results The panelists agreed that patients fulfilling criteria for possible AIE should be screened for antineuronal antibodies in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) using the tissue-based assay (TBA) and cell-based assay (CBA) techniques. Children should also be screened for anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glucoprotein antibodies (anti-MOG). Treatment should be started within the first 4 weeks of symptoms. The first-line option is methylprednisolone plus intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) or plasmapheresis, the second-line includes rituximab and/or cyclophosphamide, while third-line treatment options are bortezomib and tocilizumab. Most seizures in AIE are symptomatic, and antiseizure medications may be weaned after the acute stage. In anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis, the panelists have agreed that oral immunosuppressant agents should not be used. Patients should be evaluated at the acute and postacute stages using functional and cognitive scales, such as the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), the Modified Rankin Scale (mRS), and the Clinical Assessment Scale in Autoimmune Encephalitis (CASE). Conclusion The present study provides tangible evidence for the effective management of AIE patients within the Brazilian healthcare system. Resumo As ações sedativas e anestésicas de diversos óleos essenciais (OE) em peixes têm sido demonstradas, estimulando a busca por novas opções de anestésicos naturais. Este trabalho avaliou a segurança e a eficácia sedativa e anestésica de OE de três plantas nativas brasileiras, Acmella oleracea (jambu), Aloysia hatschbachii e Cordia verbenacea (erva-baleeira) em juvenis de Rhamdia quelen (jundiá). Foram testados protocolos de indução e recuperação anestésica (20 a 400 mg L-1) e longa exposição (48 h) de 10 a 100 mg L-1. Os OEs realizavam atividades sedativas e/ou anestésicas: AOOi na concentração de 20 mg L-1, AOOl na concentração de 50 e 100 mg L-1, AHOl, e CVOL (somente sedação) 50 mg L-1 o AHOl (sedação e anestesia) e CVOL (sedação) na concentração de 50 mg L⁻¹, pois não houve efeitos adversos importantes e/ou mortalidade. Os resultados obtidos indicam que o OE de Cordia verbenacea é o mais promissor como sedativo para juvenis de jundiá na concentração de 50 mg L⁻¹. Abstract The sedative and anesthetic actions of several essential oils (EO) on fish have been demonstrated, stimulating the search for new options for natural anesthetics. ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effects of two maturity stages of whole-plant corn at harvest (32.1 or 42.5% dry matter (DM)) and a commercial microbial inoculant composed of L. buchneri and L. plantarum at concentration of 110,000 CFU/g of fresh forage (1.1 × 105 CFU/g FF) on fermentation losses, aerobic stability, chemical composition, and digestibility of starch and neutral detergent fiber (NDF). A factorial and randomized design was used (two DM contents, both with or without inoculant), with five replicates per treatment. Dry matter at harvest affected most variables, except lignin, NDF digestibility, ethanol, and lactic and acetic acids. Drier silages differed in total DM losses (−1.7%) and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) population (+1.2 log CFU/g). The use of the inoculant affected the levels of ether extract (+0.27% DM), starch (+2.9% DM), and lignin (−0.17% DM). The LAB (+1.6 log CFU/g) and yeast (−2.82% log CFU/g) populations were also influenced, as well as aerobic stability at six days. The inoculant × DM interaction was observed in the water-soluble carbohydrates content, being higher in silages with 32.1% DM and in those not inoculated for both DM. Crude protein was also higher in these silages, whether inoculated or not. Wetter silages were more prone to gas losses when inoculated (+2.5% DM) and lost more effluent when not inoculated (+4.82 kg/t FF). However, total DM losses during aerobic stability were on average 10.58% DM lower in these silages, with inoculation being preferred (6.72% DM vs 11.60% DM (control)). ABSTRACT. Strawberry cultivation possesses unique features, including the need for high-quality seedlings adapted to the cultivation environment and proper fertigation management. These elements influence plant growth and production. This study evaluated the growth and dry matter partitioning of strawberry plants of the cultivar "Albion" at different seedling ages (0, 14, 28... 196 DAT) using two fertigation methods: open-loop and closed-loop systems. Fifteen evaluations occurred throughout the cultivation cycle, spanning from planting to 196 days after transplanting (DAT), with the study replicated over two consecutive years. We evaluated dry matter partitioning among roots, stems, leaves, senescent leaves, flowers, commercial fruits, and non-commercial fruits. We also measured root volume and length, besides counts of leaves, flowers, and both commercial and non-commercial fruits. Despite no significant differences between fertigation systems for most variables, the closed-loop system shows promise, contingent on proper nutrient solution management. The partitioning analysis revealed that fruits, followed by leaves, were the primary consumers of photoassimilates. ABSTRACT The study aimed to evaluate the influence of silver nitrate on the in vitro flowering of Capsicum frutescens cv. Cayenne associated with different light spectra and gas exchange. After 36 days of germination in MS medium, two seedlings previously germinated, were subjected to experiments in glass flasks containing two types of culture medium: I) MS culture medium; or II) Culture medium with the addition of 40 µM of AgNO3. The explants were maintained in a growth room with a 16-hour photoperiod, temperature of 25 ± 2 °C, light intensity (72 μmol m-2 s-1) from different light spectra. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design, 4 x 2 factorial scheme, with eight replicates, and the experimental unit composed of two seedlings. After 74 days of in vitro cultivation, the following parameters were evaluated: number of bifurcations, number of oxidized buds, number of open buds, number of green buds, number of aborted buds, number of leaves, root length, shoot length, total fresh and dry mass of shoots, and total fresh and dry mass of root. ABSTRACT Light is a determining factor in plant morphophysiology, as it influences the growth and development of agricultural crops. Thus, the objective was to investigate the effects of light sources on the growth and development of “biquinho” pepper cultivars. The experiment was performed in two stages (Exp1 and Exp2), evaluating two cultivars (BRS Moema; Airetama biquinho) in five light sources (white LEDs, red LEDs, blue LEDs, red/blue LEDs, and fluorescent lamps). In Exp1 the plants were kept in a controlled condition, with a completely randomized design, in a 2x5 factorial scheme (cultivars x light sources) until 76 days after emergence (DAE), in which growth variables and photosynthetic pigments were evaluated. In Exp2, the plants were removed from the above conditions and transplanted in pots, being kept in greenhouse for more 76 DAE. At 152 DAE, the same variables as Exp1 were evaluated, as well as gain of shoot fresh and dry mass, and gain of root fresh and dry mass. Resumen: El objetivo fue identificar patrones del síndrome metabólico en mujeres, estimar sus prevalencias y relaciones con características sociodemográficas y biológicas. Este estudio examinó 5.836 mujeres utilizando datos de la línea de base del Estudio Longitudinal de Salud del Adulto (ELSA-Brasil). Los patrones de síndrome metabólico se definieron a través del análisis de clase latente, utilizando las siguientes anormalidades metabólicas como indicadores: obesidad abdominal, hiperglucemia, hipertensión, hipertrigliceridemia y colesterol HDL reducido. Las relaciones entre los patrones de síndrome metabólico y las características individuales se evaluaron a través del análisis de clases latentes con covariables. Se identificaron tres patrones de síndrome metabólico, denominados “alta expresión metabólica”, “expresión metabólica moderada” y “baja expresión metabólica”. Los primeros dos patrones representan la mayoría (el 53,8%) de las mujeres del estudio. Las mujeres que tenían un nivel de escolaridad primario o secundario y que pertenecían a la clase social baja tuvieron una mayor probabilidad de presentar una expresión metabólica más alta. Resumo: O objetivo foi identificar padrões de síndrome metabólica em mulheres, estimar suas prevalências e relações com características sociodemográficas e biológicas. Este estudo examinou 5.836 mulheres utilizando dados da linha de base do Estudo Longitudinal de Saúde do Adulto (ELSA-Brasil). Os padrões de síndrome metabólica foram definidos por meio de análise de classe latente, usando as seguintes anormalidades metabólicas como indicadores: obesidade abdominal, hiperglicemia, hipertensão, hipertrigliceridemia e colesterol HDL reduzido. As relações entre os padrões de síndrome metabólica e as características individuais foram avaliadas por meio da análise de classes latentes com covariáveis. Foram identificados três padrões de síndrome metabólica, denominados “alta expressão metabólica”, “expressão metabólica moderada” e “baixa expressão metabólica”. Os dois primeiros padrões representaram a maioria (53,8%) das mulheres do estudo. As mulheres com nível de escolaridade primário ou secundário e pertencentes à classe social baixa tiveram maior chance de apresentar maior expressão metabólica. Abstract: This study aimed to identify patterns of metabolic syndrome among women and estimate their prevalence and relationship with sociodemographic and biological characteristics. In total, 5,836 women were evaluated using baseline data from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil). Patterns of metabolic syndrome were defined via latent class analysis, using the following metabolic abnormalities as indicators: abdominal obesity, hyperglycemia, hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia, and reduced HDL cholesterol. The relationship between these patterns and individual characteristics was assessed using latent class analysis with covariates. Three patterns of metabolic syndrome were identified: high metabolic expression, moderate metabolic expression, and low metabolic expression. The first two patterns represented most women (53.8%) in the study. Women with complete primary or secondary education and belonging to lower social classes were more likely to have higher metabolic expression. Black and mixed-race women were more likely to have moderate metabolic expression. Menopausal women aged 50 years and older were more often classified into patterns of greater health risk. This study addressed the heterogeneous nature of metabolic syndrome, identifying three distinct profiles for the syndrome among women. The combination of abdominal obesity, hyperglycemia, and hypertension represents the main metabolic profile found among ELSA-Brasil participants. Resumo Déficits cognitivos são comuns em pacientes após acidente vascular cerebral (AVC). O prejuízo cognitivo causado por esse evento é mediado por variáveis etárias e de escolaridade. No Brasil, o único instrumento de rastreio cognitivo específico para o pós-AVC é a Triagem Cognitiva (TRIACOG). O objetivo deste estudo é investigar evidências de validade relacionadas a variáveis externas da TRIACOG. Participaram do estudo 153 adultos e idosos (M = 60,08; DP = 9,61) de Porto Alegre e região metropolitana, sendo 87 pacientes pós-AVC e 66 saudáveis. Three-way ANOVA foi utilizada para indicar os efeitos e interações entre variáveis de grupo, etárias e educacionais. Observou-se a influência dos fatores de grupo e idade nos escores da TRIACOG. Ressalta-se a relevância dos resultados para a construção de pontos de corte para tarefas e funções do instrumento, considerando aspectos educacionais e etários, aumentando a precisão na identificação de déficits em pacientes pós-AVC.

Abstract Cognitive deficits are common among post-stroke patients. Cognitive impairments of this sort are mediated by age and education. In Brazil, the only specific cognitive screening tool designed for post-stroke patients is the Cognitive Screening Test (Triagem Cognitiva - TRIACOG). The goal of this study was to investigate validity evidence related to external variables for the TRIACOG. Our sample included 153 adults and elderly people (M = 60.08, SD = 9.61) from Porto Alegre and metropolitan area, comprising 87 post-stroke patients and 66 healthy individuals. Three-way ANOVAs were used to assess main effects and interactions between the variables group (clinical/control), age and education. An influence of group and age on scores in the TRIACOG was found. We emphasize the relevance of these results to the selection of cut-off points for the tasks and cognitive functions assessed by the instrument, considering education and age, so as to allow more accurate identification of deficits in post-stroke patients.

Resumen Los déficits cognitivos son comunes en pacientes después de un accidente cerebrovascular. El deterioro cognitivo causado por este evento está mediado por variables de edad y educación. En Brasil, la única herramienta de detección cognitiva específica para después de un accidente cerebrovascular es el Cribado de Deterioro Cognitivo (TRIACOG). El propósito de este estudio fue investigar evidencias de validez relacionadas con las variables externas de TRIACOG. Participaron en el estudio un total de 153 adultos y ancianos (M = 60.08; DS= 9.61) de Porto Alegre y región metropolitana, de los cuales, 87 eran pacientes posictus y 66 eran sanos. Se utilizó Three-way ANOVA para indicar los efectos y las interacciones entre las variables de grupo, edad y escolarización. Se observó la influencia de factores de grupo y edad en las puntuaciones del TRIACOG. Se enfatiza la relevancia de los resultados para la construcción de puntos de corte para tareas y funciones del instrumento, teniendo en cuenta aspectos educativos y de edad, aumentando la precisión en la identificación de déficits en pacientes posictus.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate, using logistic model, the differences in early production, production rate and total productivity of two strawberry cultivars with transplants from different origins grown in substrate. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design (RBD), with two strawberry cultivars (Albion and Camarosa) and two origins of transplants (National and Imported), with four repetitions consisting of eight plants. For the variable fruit mass, the logistic model was adjusted as a function of the accumulated thermal sum, and from the partial derivatives of the adjusted function, the critical points of the model were estimated. The use of the Logistic model allows evaluating precocity and rate of fruit production efficiently and accurately. The cultivar Camarosa was the most productive compared to the Albion cultivar, presenting a shorter production cycle, with a high production peak. The Albion cultivar was earlier, presenting more constant production during the evaluated production cycle. The transplant's origin did not show significantly different results for the cultivars evaluated. The producer must choose the cultivar that will be used based on its performance and also based on consumer preferences and fruit demand.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of colored shade mesh and plant density on the morphological characteristics of Corymbia citriodora seedlings. The highest radiation efficiency was found in the blue mesh, 7.01 g MJ-1 and 5.72 g MJ-1 for average and high density respectively. For dry matter and leaf area index at high density, the treatment without mesh followed by the red mesh was the best. The chlorophyll index did not differ between treatments, with mean values of 206.4, 59.1 and 262.0 for chlorophyll a, b and total, respectively. Using principal component analysis, we found the total variance to be 70%. The use of colored shade mesh and plant density altered the radiation use efficiency and dry matter accumulation. Leaf area index was affected only by plant density. The red mesh resulted in the most similar values to the treatment without mesh.

ABSTRACT Chagas disease (CD) has been changing from an endemic Latino-American disease to a condition found outside endemic regions, due to migratory movements. Although often subclinical, its acute phase can be lethal. This study aimed to assess survival during the acute phase of CD and its relationship with ventricular function in an experimental model. To this end, 30 Syrian hamsters were inoculated with Trypanosoma cruzi (IG) and other 15 animals received saline solution (CG). Groups were monitored daily and submitted to echocardiography in two moments: before the challenge and 15 days post-infection. Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and global longitudinal myocardial strain (GLS) of the LV were measured. The IG was divided into groups of animals with and without clinical signs of disease. ANOVA for mixed models was used to compare ventricular function parameters. Survival analysis was studied using Kaplan-Meier curves and the log-rank test. The follow-up lasted 60 days. LVEF in IG was reduced through time (53.80 to 43.55%) compared to CG (57.86 to 59.73%) (p=0.002). There was also a reduction of GLS (−18.97% to −12.44%) in the IG compared to CG (p=0.012). Twelve animals from IG died compared to one animal from CG. Eleven out of the 12 animals from the IG group died before presenting with clinical signs of infection. Survival was reduced in the IG compared to CG over time (p=0.02). The reduced survival during the acute phase of this experimental model of Chagas disease was related to the significant reduction of LV function. The mortality rate in the IG was higher in the group presenting with clinical signs of infection.

Abstract The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of five light qualities [fluorescent lamps (FL); white (WL), red (RL), blue (BL), or red/blue LEDs (RBL)] and two types of flask sealing (with or without porous membranes) in the in vitro germination and growth of two Capsicum frutescens cultivars (Espaguetinho and Cayenne). For this, two seeds were inoculated per flask (350 mL) containing 50 mL of MS medium with 100 mg L-1 myo-inositol, 30 g L-1 sucrose, 6.0 g L-1 agar, and pH 5.8 ± 0.1. The plants were kept under culture room conditions (16-h photoperiod, 25 ± 2°C and irradiance of 40 μmol m-2 s-1). The experiment was arranged in CRD, 2x5x2 factorial scheme (Cultivar X Light qualities X Sealing type). At 42 days, the following traits were evaluated: percentage of germination; root and shoot length; number of green leaves, senescent leaves and nodal segments; and fresh and dry weight. Plants grown under RL and BRL, showed greater number of green leaves, and longer shoots and roots. The use of porous membranes remarkably reduced the number of senescent leaves. Thus, the use of porous membranes, RL and BRL are recommended since they improve growth and development of pepper in vitro.

ABSTRACT. Strawberry is an economically and socially important crop in several regions worldwide. Thus, studies that provide information on topics in strawberry growth are important and must be constantly updated. The aims of this study were to fit a logistic growth model to describe strawberry fruit production and to estimate the partial derivatives of the fitted model in order to estimate and interpret the critical points, in addition to using multivariate analyses. To do this, data on 16 treatments [combinations of two cultivars (Albion and Camarosa), two origins (national and imported), and four mixed organic substrates (70% crushed sugar cane residue + 30% organic compost, 70% crushed sugar cane residue + 30% commercial substrate, 70% burnt rice husk + 30% organic compost, and 70% burnt rice husk + 30% commercial substrate)] conducted in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replicates were used. A logistic model was fitted to the accumulated fruit production stratified by treatment and replication. Partial derivatives related to the accumulated thermal sum were estimated in order to quantify the critical points of the model. Subsequently, a principal component analysis was performed. The results show that the use of growth models substantially increases the inferences that can be made about crop growth, and the multivariate analysis summarizes this information, simplifying its interpretation. Approaches such as those carried out in this study are still rarely used, but, compared to simpler models, they increase the amount of inferences that can be made and provide greater elucidation of the results.
