Abstract Sisal (Agave sisalana) is a plant exploited in semi-arid regions of Brazil for fiber production, but the floral scape of sisal (peduncle) is collected and often burned, causing environmental problems, even through irregular disposal. To circumvent this scenario, the objective of this work was to produce reconstituted panels using the sisal arrow and castor-based polyurethane resin. The panels were obtained using 175 g of crushed sisal arrow core with dimensions smaller than 2 mm and adopting 10% castor-based polyurethane resin and The samples were pressed under tension of 2 MPa. The properties of reconstituted panel were evaluated through NBR 14810-1 (ABNT, 2013) and NBR 14810-2 (ABNT, 2018), the physical properties were investigated: moisture, density, thickness swelling and absorption; as well as mechanical properties: MOR, MOE, internal bond and parallel compression. The found results show that the panel is classified as low density (419.8 kg/m³), and with physical and mechanical properties similars to other panels of the same classification in the literature. For average values of MOR and MOE it was found 5.24 MPa and 147.49 MPa, respectively. For internal bonding it was found 0.14 MPa and for parallel compression properties it was found 1.14 MPa. Abstract Introduction: Cardiovascular disease is an important cause of death among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Valve calcification is a predictor of cardiovascular mortality and coronary artery disease. Objective: To assess heart valve disease frequency, associated factors, and progression in CKD patients. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study on 291 CKD patients at Hospital das Clínicas de Pernambuco. Inclusion criteria were age ≥ 18 with CKD and valve disease, while those on conservative management or with missing data were excluded. Clinical and laboratory variables were compared, and patients were categorized by dialysis duration (<5 years; 5–10 years; >10 years). Statistical tests, including chi-square, Fisher’s exact, ANOVA, and Kruskal-Wallis, were employed as needed. Simple and multivariate binary regression models were used to analyze valve disease associations with dialysis duration. Significance was defined as p < 0.05. Results: Mitral valve disease was present in 82.5% (240) of patients, followed by aortic valve disease (65.6%; 86). Over time, 106 (36.4%) patients developed valve disease. No significant association was found between aortic, pulmonary, mitral, or tricuspid valve disease and dialysis duration. Secondary hyperparathyroidism was the sole statistically significant factor for mitral valve disease in the regression model (OR 2.59 [95% CI: 1.09–6.18]; p = 0.031). Conclusion: CKD patients on renal replacement therapy exhibit a high frequency of valve disease, particularly mitral and aortic valve disease. However, no link was established between dialysis duration and valve disease occurrence or progression. Introduction CKD. . ABSTRACT Objective Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) disproportionately affect transgender women and travestis (TGW), who often lack access to healthcare due to stigma and discrimination. We describe the approach and methodology of a study investigating the prevalence of syphilis, HIV, hepatitis A, B, and C, Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), and human papillomavirus (HPV) among TGW, as well as their knowledge and perceptions regarding syphilis, to better inform policies to curb STIs among this vulnerable population. Methods: TransOdara was a multicentric, cross-sectional study conducted among TGW in five capital cities from major Brazilian regions between December 2019 and July 2021. Self-identified transgender women and travestis aged >18 years were recruited using respondent-driven sampling after a qualitative formative phase, completed an interviewer-led questionnaire, were offered a physical examination, and were also asked to provide samples from multiple sites to detect various STIs, starting vaccination and treatment when indicated. Results: A total of 1,317 participants were recruited from the five study locations: Campo Grande (n=181, 13.7%), Manaus (n=340, 25.8%), Porto Alegre (n=192, 14.6%), Salvador (n=201, 15.3%), and São Paulo (n=403, 30.6%). The recruitment period varied at each study location due to logistic constraints imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: Despite the enormous challenges posed by the co-occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic and field work targeting a vulnerable, elusive, and scattered population, the TransOdara project has been effectively implemented. Caveats did not preclude 1,300 TGW from being interviewed and tested, amid a significant epidemic that disrupted health services and research projects in Brazil and worldwide.

ABSTRACT Knowledge of the physical and mechanical properties of wood is crucial for the safety and efficiency of structural design. In addition to promoting diversification and supply in the timber market, determining these properties for different types of native woods can contribute to reduce the concentrated overexploitation of tropical woods. Among the woods available for construction purposes in the Tocantina region of Maranhão State is tuturubá (Pouteria oblanceolata Pires). In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of tuturubá wood for its use in building structures. The characterizations carried out were: moisture content, apparent density, compressive strength parallel and perpendicular to the grain, shear strength parallel to the grain, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity in compression parallel to the grain and three-point bending test. For the average moisture content, a percentage value of 13.88% was checked, and for the average apparent density, a value of 992.04 kg.m-3 was obtained. For the compressive strength parallel to the grain, an average value of 60.03 MPa was determined, while the characteristic value was 56.86 MPa. The compressive modulus of elasticity parallel to the grain determined was equal to 22761 MPa. The average values for compressive strength perpendicular to the grain and shear strength parallel to the grain were 10.74 MPa and 10.47 MPa, respectively. For flexural strength, average and characteristic values were 154.82 and 128.37 MPa, respectively. For the flexural modulus of elasticity, an average value of 21026 MPa was determined. The results allowed tuturubá wood to be classified in mechanical resistance class D50. Compared to other commercially available wood species, tuturubá has better mechanical properties than pequiá (Cary-ocar villosum) and tauari (Couratari oblongifolia) woods. This physical-mechanical characterization high-lights the potential of tuturubá wood for use in building structures. design market Pouteria Pires. Pires . Caveats did not preclude 1,300 TGW from being interviewed and tested, amid a significant epidemic that disrupted health services and research projects in Brazil and worldwide. . ABSTRACT The Family Health Strategy is known to minimize the effects of health inequalities. This descriptive study aimed to present the distribution of Family Health teams (eSF) and PHC Units (UBS) in the Federal District (DF) using the Health Vulnerability Index (IVSaúde) and demographic density categorized by census tracts as parameters. We employed data from the most recently published demographic Census and official data from the National Registry of Health Establishments and the DF’s State Health Secretariat. The results revealed that the DF has a heterogeneous population when it comes to vulnerability and that most of the high-risk census tracts are in peripheral areas. The DF has 165 UBS and 615 eSFs (mean: 3.7 teams/UBS). Around 35% of the census tracts have low-risk IVSaúde, and 19.8% have high and extremely high risk. The study showed that most UBS and teams are in high demographic density and more significant vulnerability areas. However, there is still a need to increase the number of teams and UBS for adequate coverage of the model adopted in the federal capital and reduce the ratio of teams per health establishment. inequalities eSF (eSF (UBS (DF IVSaúde (IVSaúde parameters DFs s Secretariat highrisk risk areas 16 61 mean (mean 37 3 7 3. teams/UBS. teamsUBS teams/UBS . teams/UBS) 35 lowrisk low 198 19 8 19.8 However establishment 1 6 19.

Abstract Oxidative stress is involved in the pathogenesis of malaria, causing anemia, respiratory complications, and cerebral malaria. To mitigate oxidative stress, we investigated the effect of nutritional supplementation whit lycopene (LYC) on the evolution of parasitemia and survival rate in mice infected with Plasmodium berghei ANKA (Pb), comparing to the effects promoted by N-acetylcysteine (NAC). Therefore, 175 mice were randomly distributed into 4 groups; Sham: untreated and uninfected animals; Pb: animals infected with Pb; LYC+Pb: animals treated with LYC and infected with Pb; NAC+Pb: animals treated with NAC and infected with Pb. The animals were followed for 12 days after infection, and survival and parasitemia rates were evaluated. There was a 40.1% increase in parasitemia in the animals of the Pb group on the 12th day, and a survival rate of 45%. LYC supplementation slowed the development of parasitemia to 19% and promoted a significative increase in the survival rate of 80% on the 12th day after infection, compared to the Pb group, effects superior to those promoted by NAC, providing strong evidence of the beneficial effect of LYC on in vivo malaria and stressing the importance of antioxidant supplementation in the treatment of this disease. anemia complications (LYC Pb, , (Pb) Nacetylcysteine N acetylcysteine NAC. . ABSTRACT. The aim of this study was to investigate the hair coat characteristics of sows raised in a free-range system in a tropical climate and assess associations with effective radiative properties and thermal conductivity. Bristles were collected from December 2017 to April 2018 and evaluated for diameter (mm), length (mm), and density (bristles per cm2). From these data, the effective thermal conductivity, absorptivity, transmissivity, and reflectivity of the hair coat were determined. Sows were separated into four groups according to skin pigmentation and color parameters. The environment was characterized with regard to average air temperature (°C), relative humidity (%), and shortwave radiation (W m-2). The data were analyzed by repeated measures analysis. Bristle length (33 mm) and density (10 bristles cm-2) were lower in summer than in colder months (48 mm and 20 bristles cm-2, respectively). Effective absorptivity was higher and transmittance was lower in more pigmented sows, demonstrating a connection with protection against solar radiation. Therefore, the combination of a pigmented and dense coat seems to be ideal for pigs reared in free-range systems. Abstract This study evaluated the influence of heating temperature variability on the degradation level of concrete by varying the exposure temperatures (200°C, 450°C, and 800°C) and concrete design strength (C25 and C40). The concretes were submitted to ultrasound tests (before and after heating) and then were ruptured by axial compression. After rupture, samples were taken from the fracture section of the specimens for microstructural analysis by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and molecular analysis by Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that the residual strength of the concrete can change significantly (values differing by more than 100%) with temperature variability in the oven. There were physicochemical changes in the concrete constituents. The variations in Raman spectra and morphological changes (SEM images) allowed to analyze the variation in the level of degradation of concrete after exposure to fire, at the same firing step, due to temperature variation in the ovens, being compatible with the results of compressive strength and ultrasonic wave propagation velocity (UPV). Thus, the study highlights the need for adequate mapping of the heat in the oven and monitoring of the temperature of specimens in studies of concrete at high temperatures. 200°C, 200C C 200 (200°C 450C 450 450°C 800°C 800C 800 C25 (C2 C40. This research is characterized as exploratory, based on a bibliographical review, in a selective and critical manner. Analysis through indexicality allowed the identification of sociolinguistic characteristics in the local context and what are the meanings, values and status that are attributed to contact languages in their respective uses, which the different groups and social strata belonging to the conurbation attribute to the codes used in daily events and relational dynamics. The multiple discourses, observed in the speeches of local residents and in their fluid form, denote the need to rethink the notion of what language is in contact zones from the perspective of superdiversity. The linguistic varieties and the uses that residents make of the different languages available in the repertoire are characteristic of this contact zone and this is a condition that is best evidenced in the coexistence of Spanish, Portuguese and indigenous languages in this territory. Linguistic plurality and the ways of using the languages that make up the repertoire together, even if in fragments, are evidenced through translingual approaches and fluid views that not only take into account the situation of the speaker and his condition in society, but also its super diverse characteristics, compared to subjective emotional aspects. Abstract The use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and adipose-derived stromal cells (ADSC) have been investigated as a form of wound healing enhancement. The objective of this work was to evaluate the association of red propolis (RP) and PRP as inducers of ADSC for application in tissue regeneration. Adipose tissue post-collection and post-cryopreservation was isolated with type II collagenase, characterized by flow cytometry, and differentiated into osteogenic, chondrogenic and adipose cell. The viability of ADSC was evaluated when exposed to different concentrations of RP using the MTT and trypan blue assay. Acridine orange and ethidium bromide (AO/EB) was performed to evaluate cell death events. Horizontal migration methods were investigated in ADSC using autologous and homologous PRP associated with RP (PRP/RP). All assays were processed in triplicate. Flow cytometry and cellular differentiation showed that type II collagenase was effective for isolating ADSC post-collection and post-cryopreservation. RP extracts at concentrations of up to 50 μg.mL-1 presented no cytotoxic effects. Association of PRP and RP at 25 and 50 μg.ml-1 influenced ADSC migration, with total closure on the seventh day after exposition. The results here presented could stimulate proliferation of ADSC cells that may contribute directly or indirectly to the reconstructive process of tissue regeneration. plateletrich platelet rich (PRP adiposederived derived (ADSC enhancement (RP regeneration postcollection post collection postcryopreservation cryopreservation osteogenic assay AO/EB AOEB AO EB (AO/EB events PRP/RP. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. ABSTRACT Purpose: To evaluate exogenous hyaluronic acid (HA) derived from bacterial fermentation through enteral and parenteral routes in ischemic skin flaps induced in rats, using clinical and histological exams; and interleukins (IL) as tissue inflammatory biomarkers. Methods: Sixty-four male adults Wistar rats with ischemic skin flaps on the dorsum were randomized into four groups, based on the treatment protocol: subcutaneous administration of saline solution (0.9%) (GI); oral administration of distilled water (GII); subcutaneous administration of HA (0.3%) (GIII); and oral administration of HA (1%) (GIV). Flaps of all groups were comparable regarding clinical and macroscopic evaluation, histological examination, pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α) and anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. Results: A lower percentage of necrosis was identified in flaps treated with subcutaneous administration of HA (0.3%). The pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, epidermis thickness, blood vessels, and inflammatory cells showed statistically significant inter-group and intra-group differences (p < 0.05). Conclusions: High molecular HA (1,400 ~ 2,000 kDa) administrated by subcutaneous or oral route exhibited beneficial effects in ischemic skin flaps of rats. However, subcutaneous administration of HA (0.3%) showed better results in terms of the percentage of necrosis and epithelialization.
