In this study, we aimed to investigate the anticancer activity of the extract, fractions, and isolated compounds of the flowers of Fridericia platyphylla, and to characterize the bioactive compounds. The chemical diversity of the extracts and fractions was investigated using liquid chromatography coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS). We were able to annotate 26 compounds from the classes of flavones, flavonols, flavanones, isoflavones, and cinnamic acid and its derivatives. The dichloromethane fraction showed greater cytotoxicity at a concentration of 100 µg mL−1. In addition, the inhibitory concentrations of the dichloromethane fraction were 22.14 and 30.9 µg mL−1 for MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cell lines, respectively, and were capable of inhibiting tumor cell migration. Brachydins A and C were isolated from the dichloromethane fraction and showed the greatest cytotoxicity. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a sazonalidade da bronquiolite aguda no Brasil durante a temporada 2020–2022 e compará-la com a das temporadas anteriores. Métodos: Os dados de incidência de internações por bronquiolite aguda em lactentes <1 ano de idade foram obtidos do Departamento de Informática da base de dados da Saúde Pública Brasileira para o período entre 2016 e 2022. Esses dados também foram analisados por macrorregiões do Brasil (Norte, Nordeste, Sudeste, Sul e Centro-Oeste). Para descrever características sazonais e de tendência ao longo do tempo, utilizamos o Modelo de Médias Móveis Integradas Autorregressivas Sazonais. Resultados: Em comparação com o período pré-COVID-19, a incidência de hospitalizações relacionadas com bronquiolite aguda diminuiu 97% durante as intervenções não farmacológicas (março de 2020 – agosto de 2021), mas aumentou 95% após a flexibilização das intervenções não farmacológicas (setembro de 2021 – dezembro de 2022), resultando no aumento geral de 16%. ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the seasonality of acute bronchiolitis in Brazil during the 2020–2022 season and compare it with the previous seasons. Methods: Data from the incidence of hospitalizations due to acute bronchiolitis in infants <1 year of age were obtained from the Department of Informatics of the Brazilian Public Health database for the period between 2016 and 2022. These data were also analyzed by macro-regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Southeast, South, and Midwest). To describe seasonal and trend characteristics over time, we used the Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Averages Model. Results: Compared to the pre-COVID-19 period, the incidence of hospitalizations related to acute bronchiolitis decreased by 97% during non-pharmacological interventions (March 2020 – August 2021) but increased by 95% after non-pharmacological interventions relaxation (September 2021 – December 2022), resulting in a 16% overall increase. During the pre-COVID-19 period, hospitalizations for acute bronchiolitis followed a seasonal pattern, which was disrupted in 2020–2021 but recovered in 2022, with a peak occurring in May, approximately 4% higher than the pre-COVID-19 peak. A growing body of literature suggests that the platformization of the public sphere is eroding the public debate, thus potentially leading to the fragmentation of the public sphere. While there exists mounting evidences supporting this perspective there also exists a substantial body of literature that suggests otherwise. Within this realm of mixed evidence, studies on climate change visibility play a prominent role, presenting findings that both weaken and reinforce the fragmentation hypothesis. To investigate this matter in a context conducive for a fragmented public sphere, we collected a longitudinal (2014-2022) and cross-platform (Instagram, Facebook and Twitter) dataset (n=794.281) and correlated it with a secondary database on the press coverage of climate change in Brazil (n=3.490). Our analysis reveals a robust positive correlation between these datasets, indicating that the Brazilian public sphere retains the capacity to interconnect various arenas of visibility. We argue that this finding is particularly significant, given that it emanates from a case characterized by circumstances favoring a high degree of public sphere fragmentation. Hair can provide chemical information about drug use. This study employed matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) to detect drugs in hair samples. The technique was used to detect cocaine (COC, molecular weight (Mw) = 303.14 Da) and its main metabolites, benzoylecgonine (BZE, Mw = 289.13 Da), cocaethylene (COCE, Mw = 317.16 Da) and ecgonine methyl ester (EME, Mw = 199.12 Da) in hair strands using 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB, 7.0 mg mL-1) and α-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid (CHCA, at concentrations of 1.5, 3.0, 7.0, and 10 mg mL-1) as the evaluated matrices. Among these, CHCA was selected. Subsequently, the qualitative results obtained by MALDI(+) MS were correlated with the quantitative analyses of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), demonstrating a significant correlation in responses (70%), with the detection of analytes by MALDI(+) MS even at low concentrations, determined by GC-MS. Abstract In a globalized world, Legislative control over matters related to Mercosur and the European Union (EU) is important. However, its importance varies according to Regional Foreign Policy (RFP) decisions. This article investigates whether there are configurations, considering institutional design, political conditions, and economic factors, which explain the intensity of legislative participation in determining such matters. Specialists were consulted to select five decisions that represented significant changes for the regional dynamics of Mercosur and EU member countries. After defining the intentional sample of cases, necessary and sufficient conditions for the participation of the Legislature in RFP were identified through a Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA). The Legal Amazon Region has numerous lignocellulosic biomasses with unknown technological properties, contrasting with an urgent demand for energy transition towards a more sustainable economy. This study analyzed the biomasses of baru husk (BH), cupuaçu husk (CH), and pequi seed (PS) through slow pyrolysis at 650 °C to assess the suitability of the bio-oils and biochars as potential biorefinery bioproducts. The physicochemical characterizations showed that all residues are potential candidates for bioproduct production, with CH biomass obtaining the best results for biochar production due to its high carbon content (80.65%) and surface area of 298.0491 m2 g-1, while BH and PS are more suitable for bio-oil production due to their high volatile matter content (> 84%). The main compounds in the bio-oil identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were phenolic (48.5, 56.7, and 60.36% for BH, CH, and PS, respectively) and furanic (22, 12.17, and 10.28% for BH, CH, and PS, respectively). Abstract Introduction: Iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) are bioessential micronutrients for plants but can impair the energetic metabolism when present at high levels. Objective: To assess the photosynthetic performance and oxidative damages in Rhizophora mangle L. leaf tissues at low and high concentrations of Fe (74 and 195 mg kg-1; Feleaf) and Mn (65 and 414 mg kg-1; Mnleaf). Methods: Photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll a fluorescence, leaf CO2 assimilation and gas exchange and DPPH• radical scavenging capacity were sampled in R. mangle growing in estuarine forests in the North region of Espírito Santo State and the extreme South of Bahia State (Brazil) showing low and high Feleaf and Mnleaf. Results: Effects of high Fe and Mn were not identified on pigment levels. The increase in Feleaf and Mnleaf at the levels observed in this assessment had a positive effect on the number of reaction centers and on the efficiency of the oxygen-evolving complex, evaluated as K-band, while no changes were found in the parameters related to the excitation trapping efficiency at the active center of photosystem II. Distinct interference patterns of Fe and Mn on the functional processes of photosynthesis were identified, especially on CO2 assimilation and reactive oxygen species metabolism, with major effects on CO2 assimilation and carboxylation efficiency of Rubisco at high Mnleaf. Conclusion: These findings demonstrate the efficiency of R. mangle in positively regulating the electron transport chain in response to high Fe and Mn, at least in terms of the preservation of structure and functionality of the plant photosynthetic apparatus. Moreover, interference of high Mnleaf in R. mangle occurs at non-stomatal and biochemical levels. There is an antagonistic interference of these trace elements with the physiology of R. mangle, which is a dominant species in Brazilian mangroves.

Resumen Introducción: El hierro (Fe) y el manganeso (Mn) son micronutrientes bioesenciales para las plantas, pero pueden afectar el metabolismo energético cuando están presentes en niveles altos. Objetivo: Evaluar el desempeño fotosintético y los daños oxidativos en tejidos foliares de Rhizophora mangle L. a bajas y altas concentraciones de Fe (74 y 195 mg kg-1; Feleaf) y Mn (65 y 414 mg kg-1; Mnleaf). Métodos: Se muestrearon pigmentos fotosintéticos, fluorescencia de clorofila a, asimilación e intercambio de gases de CO2 foliar y capacidad de eliminación de radicales DPPH• en R. mangle que crece en bosques de estuarios en la región Norte del estado de Espírito Santo y el extremo Sur del Estado de Bahía (Brasil) mostrando Feleaf y Mnleaf bajos y altos. Resultados: No se identificaron efectos de niveles elevados de Fe y Mn en los niveles de pigmento. El aumento de Feleaf y Mnleaf en los niveles observados en esta evaluación tuvo un efecto positivo en el número de centros de reacción y en la eficiencia del complejo generador de oxígeno, evaluado como banda K, mientras que no se encontraron cambios en los parámetros relacionados con la eficiencia de atrapamiento de excitación en el centro activo del fotosistema II. Se identificaron distintos patrones de interferencia de Fe y Mn en los procesos funcionales de la fotosíntesis, especialmente en la asimilación de CO2 y el metabolismo de las especies reactivas de oxígeno, con efectos importantes en la asimilación de CO2 y la eficiencia de carboxilación de Rubisco a niveles altos de Mnleaf. Conclusión: Los hallazgos demuestran la eficiencia de R. mangle en la regulación positiva de la cadena de transporte de electrones en respuesta a los altos niveles de Fe y Mn, al menos en términos de preservación de la estructura y funcionalidad del aparato fotosintético de la planta. Además, la interferencia de Mnleaf alto en R. mangle se presenta a niveles no estomáticos y bioquímicos. Hay interferencia antagónica de estos oligoelementos con la fisiología de R. mangle, que es una especie dominante en los manglares brasileños.

Resumo O presente relatório de caso tem como objetivo descrever um procedimento cirúrgico para reconstrução orbitária, através de planeamento por espelhamento virtual e simulação com modelo realístico impresso em 3D, utilizado para abordagem cirúrgica de displasia fibrosa craniana. Paciente sob acompanhamento pelas equipas de Neurocirurgia e Cirurgia e Traumatologia Oromaxilofaciais, diagnosticada com displasia fibrosa monostótica frontal à direita, com acometimento de teto orbitário direito. Foi realizado planeamento cirúrgico por meio de espelhamento digital com o lado não patológico e, posteriormente, procedimento cirúrgico com acesso cirúrgico pelo osso frontal ao teto da cavidade orbitária e reconstrução com placa de titânio. A paciente foi monitorizada por ambas as equipas e não apresentou complicações cirúrgicas pós-operatórias.

Abstract The present case report aims to describe a surgical approach procedure for an orbital reconstruction in a patient with craniofacial fibrous dysplasia, planned with virtual mirroring and simulation using a 3D-printed realistic model. The patient was followed up by the neurosurgery and the oral and maxillofacial surgery teams and was diagnosed with monostotic fibrous dysplasia in the right frontal bone, affecting the right orbital roof. Our team performed surgical planning through virtual mirroring using the non-affected side. The surgical procedure was then performed with surgical access through the frontal bone to the orbital roof and reconstruction using a titanium plate. Both surgery teams monitored the patient, who presented no postoperative complications.

ABSTRACT. A study determining microsatellite markers was conducted to compare similarities among three different populations of Macrobrachium tenellum prawns from three different hydrological basins in Oaxaca, Mexico. In total, nine different markers in the population were used, of which six coded for the three populations and three did not. Although different, the three populations are closely genetically related, with an average allele richness from 6.845 to 16.754 and a heterozygosity of 0.166 to 0.264. However, the relationship could be much closer, particularly between them. The possible applications and scope of this knowledge are commented on and discussed.

RESUMEN Antecedentes: En las últimas décadas ha habido un cambio considerable hacia un enfoque más conservador en el tratamiento del traumatismocerrado de abdomen, con énfasis en la preservación de la función de órganos; actualmente, el tratamiento no operatorio (TNO) se ha convertido en la técnica de manejo estándar en pacientes hemodinámicamente estables con lesiones de órgano sólido. Objetivo: Describir las variables clínicas asociadas a la tasa de éxito en una serie de pacientes con TNO de trauma abdominal cerrado con lesión de órganos sólidos. Material y métodos: Estudio retrospectivo, observacional, longitudinal, analítico entre enero de 2017 y diciembre de 2022, sobre pacientes admitidos con diagnóstico de traumatismo abdominal cerrado. Las variables evaluadas fueron: edad, sexo, estadía hospitalaria, complicaciones, requerimiento de transfusiones, tasa de éxito y mortalidad. Resultados: De 2590 pacientes ingresados por Guardia de Cirugía General, 24 pacientes se internaron con diagnóstico de traumatismo cerrado de abdomen. Fueron excluidos 15 pacientes por no cumplir con los criterios de inclusión. Los 9 pacientes seleccionados tuvieron un promedio de edad de 39 años (15-80) y 9 fueron varones. En el 36% presentaron lesiones esplénicas grados I-II, 27% presentó lesión renal grado II y el 18% restante con lesión hepática grado II. La tasa de éxito del tratamiento fue del 100% en nuestra serie sin evidenciar fallos en la terapéutica instaurada. Conclusión: Con los criterios empleados en TNO del traumatismo abdominal cerrado con lesión de órganos sólidos fue factible y permitió alcanzar una alta tasa de éxito, sin mortalidad.

ABSTRACT Background: In recent decades, there has been a significant shift toward a more conservative approach to the management of blunt abdominal trauma with an emphasis on preserving organ function; currently, non-operative management (NOM) has become the standard of care for hemodynamically stable patients with solid organ injury. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the different clinical variables associated with the success rate of NOM of blunt abdominal trauma with involving solid organs. Material and methods: We conducted a retrospective, observational, longitudinal, and analytical study of patients admitted for blunt abdominal trauma between January 1, 2017, and December 1, 2022. The variables evaluated were age, sex, length of hospital stay, complications, transfusion requirements, success rate and mortality. Results: Between January 2017 and December 2022, of 2590 patients seen in the emergency department, 24 were admitted with a diagnosis of blunt abdominal trauma. Fifteen patients did not meet the inclusion criteria. The mean age of the 9 patients included was 39 years (15-80 years) and 6 were men. Thirty-six percent had grade I and II splenic lesions, 27% had grade II renal lesions, and 18% had grade II hepatic lesions. The success rate of our series was 100% and there were no failures. Conclusion: The variables analyzed allowed us to affirm that NOM of blunt abdominal trauma with solid organ injury was feasible and allowed us to achieve a high success rate, without deaths.

RESUMO Neste trabalho, destacam-se aprendizados com pesquisa realizada pelo Núcleo Ecologias e Encontros de Saberes para a Promoção Emancipatória da Saúde (Neepes) em parceria com o Centro de Integração na Serra da Misericórdia (CEM) e o Movimento dos Sem Teto da Bahia (MSTB), que atuam em territórios periféricos no Rio de Janeiro e em Salvador. A pesquisa buscou apoiar e sistematizar conhecimentos e práticas emancipatórias de promoção da saúde protagonizados por essas experiências, tendo por base quatro eixos temáticos transversais: alimentação, cuidado, moradia e proteção ambiental, além de comunicação. No artigo, enfocaram-se as reflexões coletivas em relação ao primeiro eixo temático, envolvendo estratégias para promover agroecologia e soberania alimentar, com experiências de produção, circulação e acesso a alimentos saudáveis. Com base nessas reflexões, visou-se contribuir com discussões sobre Territórios Sustentáveis e Saudáveis (TSS), especialmente pelos aprendizados possibilitados com a sistematização das experiências territoriais com base na noção de Promoção Emancipatória da Saúde, que aponta para importantes aportes nas dimensões de justiça ambiental e cognitiva. ABSTRACT In this work, we highlight lessons learned from research carried out by the Nucleus Ecologies and Encounters of Knowledge for Emancipatory Health Promotion (NEEPES) in partnership with the Center of Integration in Serra da Misericórdia (CEM) and the Movement of Homeless People of Bahia (MSTB), in peripheral territories in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador. Resumo Introdução: Doenças cardiovasculares são uma causa significativa de morte em pacientes com Doença Renal Crônica (DRC). A calcificação valvar é preditor de mortalidade cardiovascular e doença arterial coronariana. Objetivo: Avaliar a frequência, fatores associados e progressão de valvopatias em pacientes com DRC. Métodos: Coorte retrospectiva com 291 pacientes ambulatoriais no Hospital das Clínicas de Pernambuco. Inclusão: ≥18 anos com DRC e valvopatia; exclusão: tratamento conservador ou dados incompletos. Variáveis clínicas e laboratoriais foram comparadas e categorizadas por tempo de terapia dialítica (TTD): <5 anos, 5–10 anos, >10 anos. Foram aplicados os testes Qui-quadrado, exato de Fisher, ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis. Associação entre valvopatia e TTD foi avaliada por regressão binária. Significância foi definida como p < 0,05. Resultados: A valvopatia mitral foi encontrada em 82,5% (240) dos casos, seguida da aórtica (65,6%; 86). Houve progressão da doença valvar em 106 (36,4%) pacientes. Não houve associação entre valvopatias aórtica, pulmonar, mitral ou tricúspide e TTD. Hiperparatireoidismo secundário foi a única variável explicativa significativa na regressão para valvopatia mitral (OR 2,59 [IC95%: 1,09–6,18]; p = 0,031). Abstract Introduction: Cardiovascular disease is an important cause of death among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Valve calcification is a predictor of cardiovascular mortality and coronary artery disease. Objective: To assess heart valve disease frequency, associated factors, and progression in CKD patients. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study on 291 CKD patients at Hospital das Clínicas de Pernambuco. Inclusion criteria were age ≥ 18 with CKD and valve disease, while those on conservative management or with missing data were excluded. Clinical and laboratory variables were compared, and patients were categorized by dialysis duration (<5 years; 5–10 years; >10 years). Statistical tests, including chi-square, Fisher’s exact, ANOVA, and Kruskal-Wallis, were employed as needed. Simple and multivariate binary regression models were used to analyze valve disease associations with dialysis duration. Significance was defined as p < 0.05. Results: Mitral valve disease was present in 82.5% (240) of patients, followed by aortic valve disease (65.6%; 86). Over time, 106 (36.4%) patients developed valve disease. No significant association was found between aortic, pulmonary, mitral, or tricuspid valve disease and dialysis duration. Secondary hyperparathyroidism was the sole statistically significant factor for mitral valve disease in the regression model (OR 2.59 [95% CI: 1.09–6.18]; p = 0.031). Conclusion: CKD patients on renal replacement therapy exhibit a high frequency of valve disease, particularly mitral and aortic valve disease. Resumo Introdução: O papel da tomografia computorizada torácica de ultrabaixa dose (ULDCT) em contexto de urgência é desconhecido. Objetivo: Este estudo avaliou a viabilidade da ULDCT em adultos na urgência com suspeita de pneumonia. Foram medidos a dose de radiação, o tempo entre a solicitação e os relatórios do exame, prescrições de antimicrobianos também foram correlacionadas. Métodos: Este estudo avaliou a viabilidade da ULDCT em adultos na urgência com suspeita de pneumonia. Foram medidas a dose de radiação, o tempo entre a solicitação e a disponibilização dos relatórios do exame, e também foram correlacionadas as prescrições de antimicrobianos. Entre outubro de 2017 e dezembro de 2018, incluímos prospectivamente adultos com suspeita de pneumonia adquirida na comunidade, sem diagnóstico definitivo por avaliação clínica. Os critérios de exclusão abrangeram condições clínicas que pudessem afetar a interpretação da imagem. Resultados: Foram incluídos 131 pacientes elegíveis (idade média de 43,5 anos; 57% homens) encaminhados para ULDCT. Dezoito (13,7%) foram excluídos. A dose média de radiação da ULDCT foi de 0,14 mSv. O intervalo de tempo entre a solicitação médica e o resultado da ULDCT foi de 43 minutos. Conclusão: A ULDCT mostrou-se viável para pacientes adultos com suspeita de pneumonia em contexto de urgência. Os relatórios foram disponibilizados num intervalo razoável e os resultados negativos foram associados a uma baixa taxa de prescrição de antibióticos.

Abstract Background: The role of ultra-low-dose chest CT (ULDCT) in the emergency department is unknown. Purpose: This study sought to examine feasibility of ULDCT in adults presenting to the emergency department for whom pneumonia was suspected. Radiation dose and time interval between medical request and ULDCT results were measured, antibiotic prescriptions were correlated. Methods: Between October 2017 and December 2018, we prospectively enrolled consecutive healthy adult patients in a single-center for whom community-acquired pneumonia was suspected and for whom no definitive diagnosis was possible by clinical judgment. Exclusion criteria comprised all chronic conditions that could impact severity and interpretation of image. Results: 131 eligible patients (mean age 43.5 years; 57% men) were enrolled to ULDCT. Eighteen (13.7%) patients were excluded. Average CT radiation dose was 0.14 mSv. Time interval between medical request and ultra-low-dose chest CT result was 43 minutes. Only 15.9% of patients with negative CT received antibiotics. Conclusion: Ultra-low-dose chest CT was feasible for almost all patients in a group of healthy adults presenting to the emergency department with suspected community-acquired pneumonia. Results were made available in a reasonable interval, and negative ones were associated with a low antibiotic prescription rate.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Nutritional status and growth curves can affect cognitive development, increase the risk of infection, and contribute to the development of chronic diseases. Its etiology is related to food, socioeconomic, and maternal conditions. However, to date, no data on these parameters exist in the state of Goiás, Brazil. OBJECTIVE: To compare the nutritional status and growth curves of children and adolescents in the city of Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil. DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a cross-sectional study. A total of 529 individuals were recruited from a primary health center in the municipality. METHODS: To assess nutritional status, the sample was divided into three categories: 3–4, 5–10, and 11–19 years, with z-score classification considering body mass index for age. The classification of growth curves was performed considering the median height values for age, assuming two references: (a) young Brazilian population and (b) one recommended for international use. The independent sample T-test was used to compare anthropometric variables. RESULTS: The results showed that the classification of eutrophics represents a predominant percentage between both sexes (men: 03–04 = 55.4%; 05–10 = 57.6%; 11–19 = 53.5 % and women: 03–04 = 53.5%; 05–10 = 63.9%; 11–19 = 56.9%), and growth curves showed differences in specific periods in both sexes. CONCLUSIONS: It can be concluded that children and adolescents from the city of Goiânia present as predominance the eutrophic nutritional status, followed by the risk of overweight, underweight, obesity, and malnutrition of both sexes.
