ABSTRACT Fertilization with boron (B) is a crucial aspect in the management of tropical soils to achieve high yield and wood quality in forest species. However, studies are still needed for a better understanding of the effects of B on the anatomy and physiology of African mahogany to improve borate fertilization programs in terms of doses and sources of B. The objective was to characterize the morphology and anatomy of African mahogany leaves subjected to doses and sources of B, as well as to investigate leaf lesions caused by excess B. In a 3 × 3 factorial scheme, a randomized block design was used with four replications, resulting in a total of 36 experimental units. The treatments consisted of three sources of B: borax (sodium tetraborate), ulexite, and colemanite, and three doses of B: 0, 1.5, and 3 mg dm –3 . After 120 days of transplanting, leaf samples with and without toxicity lesions were collected for morphological and anatomical evaluations. Following the collection, the samples were photographed and fixed in Karnovsky’s solution. The plants cultivated in the control treatment did not exhibit any symptoms of B deficiency in the leaf tissue. Borax and ulexite sources, and higher doses of B resulted in greater lesions, accompanied by the accumulation of phenols in the necrotic region. In contrast, the source of lower solubility (colemanite) and lower dose of B demonstrated the highest accumulation of starch. African mahogany is sensitive to applying high doses (3 mg dm –3 ) and high solubility sources of Boron (borax). Excessive B levels cause necrosis and structural disorganization of African mahogany leaf tissues. Abstract Fixed-bed columns are a well-established water purification technology. Several models have been constructed over the decades to scale up and predict the breakthrough curve of an adsorption column varying the flow rate, length, and initial concentration of solute. In this work, we proposed using an emerging computational approach of a physic-informed neural network (PINN) that uses artificial intelligence to solve the partial differential equation model of adsorption. The effectiveness of this approach is compared with finite-volume methods and experimental data. We also couple the PINN with a sampling importance resampling particle filter, a Bayesian technique that allows the filter and estimate states of the process, quantifying uncertainties of experimental measurements. The results shows physic-informed neural network capability in solving the proposed model and its uses as an evolution model for sequential estimation.
ABSTRACT Irrigation plays a fundamental role in advancing agricultural frontiers and increasing crop productivity, especially in semi-arid environments, because they exhibit high spatiotemporal rainfall variation. This practice is suggested even for adapted crops, such as forage cactus (Opuntia sp.), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), and single or intercropping systems. In this study, aimed to evaluate the profitability of using irrigation in a single and intercropping forage cactus-sorghum system in a semi-arid region. The experimental design was in randomized blocks in a 5 × 3 factorial arrangement: five drip irrigation depths (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% of the reference evapotranspiration - ET0) and three cropping systems (single forage cactus, single sorghum, and intercropping forage cactus-sorghum), with four replicates. The 0% ET0 treatment corresponded to rainfed conditions at a depth of 355 mm. A cycle of forage cactus and two sorghum cultivars (plant and regrowth) was conducted between November 2014 and November 2015. It was verified that the highest costs for implantation of the crop systems in irrigated conditions are due to the acquisition of irrigation and input systems, representing 85.3% of the effective operational cost. The single sorghum and forage cactus-sorghum systems provided the highest fresh matter productivity (62,013.05 and 60,075.36 kg ha-1, respectively). Based on economic indicators, the adoption of irrigation depths (25, 50, 75, and 100% ET0) promoted profits for the systems (single and intercropping) from the second year of implementation.

Abstract Geoprocessing techniques are generally applied in natural disaster risk management due to their ability to integrate and visualize different sets of geographic data. The objective of this study was to evaluate the capacity of classification and regression tree (CART) to assess fire risk. MCD45A1 product of the burnt area, relative to a 16-year period (2000-2015) was used to obtain a fire occurrence map, from center points of the raster, using a kernel density approach. The resulting map was then used as a response variable for CART analysis with fire influence variables used as predictors. A total of 12 predictors were determined from several databases, including environmental, physical, and socioeconomic aspects. Rules generated by the regression process allowed to of define different risk levels, expressed in 35 management units, and used to produce a fire prediction map. Results of the regression process (r = 0.94 and r² = 0.88) demonstrate the capability of the CART algorithm in highlighting hierarchical relationships among predictors, while the model’s easy interpretability provides a solid basis for decision making. This methodology can be expanded in other environmental risk analysis studies and applied to any area of the globe on a regional scale. data (CART MCDA MCD MCD45A 16year year 16 20002015 2000 2015 (2000-2015 raster approach 1 databases physical aspects levels 3 units r 094 0 94 0.9 0.88 088 88 models model s making scale 2000201 200 201 (2000-201 09 9 0. 0.8 08 8 200020 20 (2000-20 20002 2 (2000-2 (2000- (2000 (200 (20 (2 (

Abstract The Santos Basin (SB) is the main petroliferous basin in the Brazilian continental margin and one of the most studied marine areas in Brazil. However, historical data suggest that new efforts should be carried out to acquire quantitative biological data, especially in the deep sea, to establish the baseline of essential ocean variables in different ecosystems for future monitoring programs. The Brazilian energy company Petrobras planned and executed 24 oceanographic cruises over a period of 2 years to assess the benthic (SANSED cruise) and pelagic (SANAGU cruise) systems of the SB (356 days at sea in 2019 and 2021/2022). These efforts were part of the Santos Project, which comprised a comprehensive environmental study aimed at investigating benthic and pelagic variables to characterize ecology, biogeochemistry, thermohaline properties of water masses, and ocean circulation patterns, geomorphology, and sedimentology, as well as organic and inorganic chemistry. Here we present the detailed sampling designs and the field methods employed on board, during the SB scientific cruises. All sampling protocols were based on standardized approaches. For the benthos analyses, triplicate sediment samples were performed using a GOMEX-type box corer (0.25 m²) or a large modified Van Veen grab (0.75 m²) at 100 stations ranging from 25 to 2400 m depth. At each station, 25 geochemical and physico-chemical parameters were analyzed in addition to micro-, meio-, and macrofauna and living foraminifera samples. For the pelagic system, 60 stations were selected to investigate the plankton community, ranging in size from pico- to macroplankton, through vertical, horizontal, and oblique net hauls (20, 200, and 500 μm mesh size), as well as 25 biogeochemical parameters collected with an aid of a CTD-rosette sampler. Part of this scientific information also serves the Regional Environmental Characterization Project (PCR-BS) in support of Petrobras’ Santos Basin drilling licensing process led by the Brazilian Environmental Agency – IBAMA. This project contributes to the sustainable development of the SB, in line with the guidelines of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
Abstract: The state of Goiás, in central Brazil, is covered mainly by the Cerrado domain, with the Alto Paraná Atlantic Forest occupying its central-southern portion. Goiás is one of the 20 Brazilian federative units without a mammal checklist. In this study, we provide the first checklist of mammals from Goiás state. We recorded mammal species based primarily on the analysis of specimens housed in scientific collections as well as on literature with associated voucher material. We listed 191 mammalian species belonging to 125 genera, 31 families and 10 orders, which represents 25.2% of the mammal species occurring in Brazil. The most speciose orders were Chiroptera (90 spp.), followed by Rodentia (43 spp.), Carnivora (19 spp.) and Didelphimorphia (17 spp.). The following orders accounted for a smaller portion of the state diversity: Cetartiodactyla (7 spp.), Cingulata (7 spp.), Primates (4 spp.), Pilosa (2 spp.), Lagomorpha (1 sp.), and Perissodactyla (1 sp.). A total of 28 species (14.7%), mainly represented by medium and large-sized mammals, are nationally threatened while 12 (6.3%) are globally threatened. Our results indicate great portions of the state lacking a proper survey of mammals, especially the northwestern portion. We discuss species richness, distribution and conservation status of the mammals of Goiás state in national and regional scenarios. We highlight the need for mammal inventories based on complementary survey techniques with the collection of vouchers in order to provide karyologic, molecular, morphologic, parasitologic, and ecological data. These informations are the basis for integrative studies that lead to the understanding of current mammalian richness and diversity. Indeed, knowledge on species richness distribution in the state will guide conservation strategies, especially in areas undergoing habitat loss and fragmentation, such as the central-southern portion of Goiás.

Abstract Ensuring that industrial effluents meet quality standards to be released into water bodies is still one of the major environmental concerns. Liquid phase adsoption in fixed bed collumns is one of the most known treatments. Measurements are needed to monitor the process. However, as they are often corrupted by noise from the measuring equipment, performing an accurate analysis becomes an important challenge. The present work demonstrates the effectiveness of particle filter Sampling Importance Resampling as a fast and robust tool for monitoring a problem of sulfate ion removal. Experimental measurements were used to validate the methodology and the particle filter (PF) performance was evaluated by means of error metrics, computational time and compared to the Unscented Kalman Filter. The results show that the PF provides sequentially very accurate estimates for the sulfate adsorption breakthrough curve.

Plant flavonoids have been increasingly studied for its importance in plant metabolism, inter-species interactions and human health-promoting effects. Each botanical species has a distinct flavonoid profile, and as such, this work aimed to develop and apply a high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS) method to quantify specific flavonoids in different plants and parts. Six flavonoids (isoquercitrin, quercetin, naringin, naringenin, hesperidin and rutin), two isoflavonoids (daidzin and daidzein) and one coumarin (umbelliferone) were targeted. Calibration curves showed good correlations (R2 > 0.994) and limits of quantification (≤ 500 ng mL-1). The method was applied for detection of analytes in common bean seeds (Phaseolus vulgaris), soybean leaves (Glycine max), and sour orange (Citrus aurantium), sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), and Tahiti lime (Citrus latifolia) flavedo after ultrasound assisted acidic hydroalcoholic extraction. The method was tuned for quick and efficient extraction. Principal component analysis was helpful for the discrimination of matrices based on their flavonoid profiles.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

In order to keep the quality and increase the shelf-life during the postharvest of bananas 'Prata-Anã', the efficiency of cold storage (CS), the modified atmosphere (MA) by the use of low density polyethylene (LDPE) plastics bags, vacuum and use of sachet adsorption of ethylene was evaluated. The treatments were: T1: control (no packaging, system of ethylene adsorption or vacuum), T2: LDPE; T3: LDPE + system of ethylene adsorption; T4: LDPE + vacuum and T5: LDPE + system of ethylene adsorption + vacuum. Analysis were performed every 5 days after harvest, up to 35 days. It was verified that the fruit under LDPE bags showed the smallest areas with skin lesions, the lowest ethylene concentration, the lowest increments of titratable acidity (TA) and normal behavior/maintenance of pH levels. This possibly resulted in the highest contents of total and reduced sugars at the end of the experiment. Thus, it was concluded that the combined use of LDPE bags with the ethylene adsorbents sachets resulted in delaying in the process of bananas 'Prata-Anã' ripening, resulting, commercially, in the extension of shelf-life of banana for at least 30 days after harvest.

The use of organic wastes plays an important role in agriculture due to its potential for reducing cost of production and minimize environmental impacts. The work was carried out to evaluate the effect of mineral fertilizer and filter cake doses on sugarcane yield and soil chemical characteristics. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse in a randomized block design arranged in a factorial outline with five doses of filter cake (0; 9.25; 18.5; 27.75 e 35 g pot-1), three levels of mineral fertilizer (0; 50 e 100% of the recommended dose) and three replicates with one plant per plot. The results showed that filter cake addition favored soil fertility, increasing the contents of both macro and micronutrients and decreasing Al concentration. Filter cake increased pH while mineral fertilizer acidified the soil. Sugarcane plants responded to filter cake application by increasing the uptake of phosphorus, potassium and copper. The use of 9.25 g of filter cake associated with 50% of the mineral fertilization usually recommended is sufficient in order to increase sugarcane yield while reducing costs with mineral fertilizers.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of water layers on phytoremediation of soil contaminated by picloram herbicide in Tanzania grass (Panicum maximum cv Tanzânia). The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse and groups of 12 treatments were made up of a combination of four daily levels of water replacement, by means of evaporated water layers (80; 90; 100 and 110% of water evaporated) and three picloram levels (0; 80 and 160 g ha-1). The amount of water evaporated was determined using two evaporimeters. After the herbicide had been applied, the phytoremediating plant species was planted. Ninety days after emergence, the Tanzania grass was dried and the aerial part was discarded. When this step had finished, soybean was planted as a bioindicator for picloram presence, and phytotoxicity, height, green and dry mass were determined. Soybean was very sensitive to picloram in the soil. It was noted that the extreme humidity levels evaluated, 80 and 110% of the daily replacement of the evaporated water layers, were favorable to remediation of soils contaminated with picloram herbicide. Optimization of phytoremediation is not significant when a residue corresponding to 160 g ha-1 of the herbicide was evaluated.

Plants with medicinal properties have been applied for a long in the traditional health care, so that sometimes their use takes place concomitantly to the use of industrialized drugs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the interference of Plectranthus amboinicus essential oil on the anti-Candida activity of some clinically used antifungals by the solid medium diffusion procedure. Assayed antifungals were amphotericin B (100 µg/mL), ketoconazole (50 µg/mL) and itraconazole (50 µg/mL). C. albicans, C. tropicalis, C. guilliermondii, C. krusei and C. stellatoidea were used as test microorganisms. P. amboinicus essential oil showed MIC value for most assayed yeast strains. The essential oil when assayed in its MIC value showed some interference on the anti-Candida effectiveness of the assayed antifungals. It was noted yeast growth inhibition zones with different diameters when the antifungals were tested alone and combined with the essential oil. P. amboinicus essential oil showed prominent interference on the anti-yeast activity of itraconazole providing a synergic effect on C. albicans, C. tropicalis, C. krusei and C. stellatoidea. Also, the essential oil interfered on the anti-yeast activity of ketoconazole when interacting with C. albicans, C. guilliermondii and C. stellatoidea providing, respectively, an antagonic and synergic effect. On the other hand, it was found a small interference on the anti-yeast effect of amphotericin B. These data showed that combined use of medicinal plants and/or derivatives with industrialized drugs, particularly antimicrobials, could interfere on their expected therapeutic effects.
