Lantana caatingensis Moldenke (Verbenaceae) is an endemic plant from northeastern Brazil. However, its chemical composition is almost unknown. This study aimed to characterize the chemical compounds found in L. caatingensis and investigate the antileishmanial potential of its hydroalcoholic extract and polar fractions. Compounds present in the hydroalcoholic extract obtained from L. caatingensis leaves and its polar fractions (ethyl acetate and methanolic) were analyzed by liquid chromatography with a photodiode-array detector coupled to electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. An antileishmanial assay was performed in a 96-well plate against Leishmania major promastigotes using resazurin on a plate spectrophotometer and the results were expressed as percentage of growth inhibition. Nine compounds were determined in the investigated extract and fractions, classified as flavonoids, flavonoid C-glycosides and phenylethanoid glycosides. The antileishmanial activity revealed that the hydroalcoholic extract and the ethyl acetate fraction were active against L. major promastigotes with inhibitory concentration of 71.78 and 26.86 µg mL-1, respectively, while the methanolic fraction was inactive (478.40 µg mL-1). ABSTRACT Planting is considered one of the most essential steps in coffee growing. Lack of uniformity in planting may compromise future operations. Therefore, verifying planting operations quality is fundamental to optimizing production processes and reducing costs. This study aimed to investigate planting techniques through Statistical Process Control (SPC) and aerial images. Carried out in two areas, managed manually and semi-mechanized in the Bom Jardim Farm (MG - Brazil). Data were collected through Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA). Quality control charts and density maps were used to identify variations in distribution and spacing between plants and planting rows. It was found that the planting carried out manually was 4.7% wider than projected due to spacing reduction from 0.5 m to 0.48 m. The semi-mechanized system displayed a deficit of 7% compared to the projected planting system, using 0.55 m between plants. The density map showed the most significant planting alignment variations. Despite displaying lower results than the manual system, the semi-mechanized system improvements are valid for their minimal average variations. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a sazonalidade da bronquiolite aguda no Brasil durante a temporada 2020–2022 e compará-la com a das temporadas anteriores. Métodos: Os dados de incidência de internações por bronquiolite aguda em lactentes <1 ano de idade foram obtidos do Departamento de Informática da base de dados da Saúde Pública Brasileira para o período entre 2016 e 2022. Esses dados também foram analisados por macrorregiões do Brasil (Norte, Nordeste, Sudeste, Sul e Centro-Oeste). Para descrever características sazonais e de tendência ao longo do tempo, utilizamos o Modelo de Médias Móveis Integradas Autorregressivas Sazonais. ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the seasonality of acute bronchiolitis in Brazil during the 2020–2022 season and compare it with the previous seasons. Methods: Data from the incidence of hospitalizations due to acute bronchiolitis in infants <1 year of age were obtained from the Department of Informatics of the Brazilian Public Health database for the period between 2016 and 2022. These data were also analyzed by macro-regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Southeast, South, and Midwest). To describe seasonal and trend characteristics over time, we used the Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Averages Model. Results: Compared to the pre-COVID-19 period, the incidence of hospitalizations related to acute bronchiolitis decreased by 97% during non-pharmacological interventions (March 2020 – August 2021) but increased by 95% after non-pharmacological interventions relaxation (September 2021 – December 2022), resulting in a 16% overall increase. In this interdisciplinary word, the painting “Costureiras” by Tarsila do Amaral (1886-1973), from 1950, was studied by ultraviolet-induced visible luminescence (UVL), infrared image (IR) and macro X-ray fluorescence scanning (MA-XRF) techniques. RESUMO: O ensino de anatomia vem se modificando ao longo dos anos, introduzindo métodos tecnológicos, principalmente após o período pandêmico. Questiona-se o uso exclusivo da tecnologia em comparação aos métodos tradicionais de dissecação e aulas teóricas presenciais no que diz respeito à aquisição de conhecimento. Este artigo analisou a percepção de conhecimento de alunos de diversos semestres do curso de Medicina Veterinária, comparando alunos que tiveram aulas apenas online com aqueles que tiveram aulas presenciais de Anatomia Descritiva dos Animais Domésticos. Para tanto, questões foram enviadas por meio de formulário, com preenchimento voluntário e anônimo, e posteriormente analisadas estatisticamente. Os resultados indicam que 11,5% dos alunos que cursaram a disciplina remotamente falharam na aplicação dos conhecimentos em outras disciplinas, enquanto nenhum aluno do ensino presencial relatou o mesmo. A maioria dos alunos, tanto dos grupos remotos quanto dos presenciais, lembram-se do assunto, mas revisam o conteúdo com frequência. Em relação ao conhecimento teórico, o grupo online (80,8%) compreendeu melhor à medida que o curso avançava, comparado a 59,6% do grupo presencial. ABSTRACT: Anatomy teaching has been changing over the years, introducing technological methods especially after the pandemic period. An ongoing debate revolves around whether exclusive reliance on technology for anatomy classes, as opposed to traditional methods and face-to-face instruction, enhances knowledge acquisition. This study analyzed the knowledge perception of students from various semesters throughout the Veterinary Medicine course, comparing students who only had online classes with those who had face-to-face classes in Gross Anatomy of Domestic Animals. For this purpose, a questionnaire was distributed for voluntary and anonymous completion, and the responses were subsequently analyzed statistically. The results indicated that 11.5% of the students who took Anatomy remotely failed to apply the knowledge in other subjects, while no face-to-face learning student reported the same. Most students, both remote and face-to-face groups, remember the subject but review the content frequently. Regarding theoretical knowledge, the online group (80.8%) understood better as the course progressed, compared to 59.6% of the face-to-face group. The connection between Anatomy and other subjects was more highlighted by the face-to-face group (30.8%) compared to the online group (15.4%). Both groups agree that physical contact with anatomical specimens is essential; however, some believe that initial exposure through 3D images or photographs is feasible. We concluded based on this preliminary study that the initial interactions with the Anatomy field should include diversified pedagogical techniques with empathetic communication. Gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) has been widely used, and along with other methodologies such as derivatization, is a powerful tool to analyze phytocompounds, including cuticular wax components. The loss of structural information upon fragmentation of waxes makes it difficult to interpret and identify the GC-MS mass spectra of these compounds with the traditional methods, as digital libraries. Therefore, as a new complementary alternative to traditional methods of identifying aliphatic acyclic lipids based on mass spectra, we present the new software WaxAlly in this technical note. WaxAlly is a new software created based on simple algorithms, enabling the rapid recognition by the user of eight aliphatic acyclic lipid classes, including alkanes, alkenes, aldehydes, ketones, esters, and TMS derivatives of free fatty acids, primary and secondary alcohols, and their homologues with carbon chains varying between 10 and 100 carbons. RESUMO O balanço hídrico é uma ferramenta com diversas aplicações na agricultura, incluindo a avaliação da adequação de um ambiente para o cultivo de uma determinada cultura, através da compreensão de como os recursos hídricos operam no sistema. Esta informação é vital para determinar se a água disponível satisfaz a necessidade da cultura. Assim, objetivou-se calcular o balanço hídrico em um Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo para o cultivo de Coffea canephora no município de Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre, utilizando uma série histórica de 36 anos para avaliar o potencial e as restrições da cultura de acordo com a água disponível. Os resultados mostraram que, de forma geral, o cultivo de Coffea canephora é adequado para a região de estudo. Os períodos de déficit hídrico e de excesso de água são bem definidos, ocorrendo de abril a agosto e de setembro a março, respectivamente. Verificou-se que apenas a fase de floração do cafeeiro coincide com o período de déficit hídrico na região, exigindo assim irrigação para evitar comprometer essa etapa do desenvolvimento do fruto. Em relação ao Indice de Satisfação da Necessidade de Água (ISNA), observou-se que, quando calculado em uma escala mensal, indica baixo risco climático para o cultivo de Coffea canephora na região. ABSTRACT Water balance is a tool that has various applications in agriculture, including assessing whether an environment is suitable for growing a specific crop by providing information on how water resources function in the system. This information is essential for determining whether the available water satisfies the crop’s demand. Thus, the objective of this work was to calculate the water balance of Typic Hapludults for growing coffee (Coffea canephora) crops in Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre, Brazil, using a 36-year historical series to assess the potential and limitation of the crop according to the water availability. The results showed that coffee crops are, in general, suitable for growing in the study region. Water deficit and water surplus periods are well-defined, from April to August and September to March, respectively. Flowering was the only stage of coffee crops that coincides with the water deficit period in the region; thus, irrigation is necessary to prevent compromising this stage and fruit development. The Water Requirement Satisfaction Index (WRSI), calculated on a monthly basis, indicates a low climate risk for coffee crops in the region. However, when calculated on a daily basis, the WRSI shows a medium to high climate risk for coffee crops in several periods. Abstract Introduction: Iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) are bioessential micronutrients for plants but can impair the energetic metabolism when present at high levels. Objective: To assess the photosynthetic performance and oxidative damages in Rhizophora mangle L. leaf tissues at low and high concentrations of Fe (74 and 195 mg kg-1; Feleaf) and Mn (65 and 414 mg kg-1; Mnleaf). Methods: Photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll a fluorescence, leaf CO2 assimilation and gas exchange and DPPH• radical scavenging capacity were sampled in R. mangle growing in estuarine forests in the North region of Espírito Santo State and the extreme South of Bahia State (Brazil) showing low and high Feleaf and Mnleaf. Results: Effects of high Fe and Mn were not identified on pigment levels. The increase in Feleaf and Mnleaf at the levels observed in this assessment had a positive effect on the number of reaction centers and on the efficiency of the oxygen-evolving complex, evaluated as K-band, while no changes were found in the parameters related to the excitation trapping efficiency at the active center of photosystem II. Distinct interference patterns of Fe and Mn on the functional processes of photosynthesis were identified, especially on CO2 assimilation and reactive oxygen species metabolism, with major effects on CO2 assimilation and carboxylation efficiency of Rubisco at high Mnleaf. Conclusion: These findings demonstrate the efficiency of R. mangle in positively regulating the electron transport chain in response to high Fe and Mn, at least in terms of the preservation of structure and functionality of the plant photosynthetic apparatus. Moreover, interference of high Mnleaf in R. mangle occurs at non-stomatal and biochemical levels. There is an antagonistic interference of these trace elements with the physiology of R. mangle, which is a dominant species in Brazilian mangroves.

Resumen Introducción: El hierro (Fe) y el manganeso (Mn) son micronutrientes bioesenciales para las plantas, pero pueden afectar el metabolismo energético cuando están presentes en niveles altos. Objetivo: Evaluar el desempeño fotosintético y los daños oxidativos en tejidos foliares de Rhizophora mangle L. a bajas y altas concentraciones de Fe (74 y 195 mg kg-1; Feleaf) y Mn (65 y 414 mg kg-1; Mnleaf). Métodos: Se muestrearon pigmentos fotosintéticos, fluorescencia de clorofila a, asimilación e intercambio de gases de CO2 foliar y capacidad de eliminación de radicales DPPH• en R. mangle que crece en bosques de estuarios en la región Norte del estado de Espírito Santo y el extremo Sur del Estado de Bahía (Brasil) mostrando Feleaf y Mnleaf bajos y altos. Conclusión: Los hallazgos demuestran la eficiencia de R. mangle en la regulación positiva de la cadena de transporte de electrones en respuesta a los altos niveles de Fe y Mn, al menos en términos de preservación de la estructura y funcionalidad del aparato fotosintético de la planta. Resumo O sisal (Agave sisalana) é uma planta explorada nas regiões semiáridas do Brasil para produção de fibras, mas o escapo floral do sisal (flecha) é coletado e frequentemente queimado causando problemas ambientais, até mesmo pelo descarte irregular. Para contornar este cenário, o objetivo deste trabalho foi produzir painéis reconstituídos usando a flecha do sisal e resina poliuretana à base de mamona. Os painéis foram obtidos empregando 175 g do miolo da flecha de sisal triturada com dimensões inferiores a 2 mm e adotando 10% de resina poliuretana à base de mamona e as amostras foram prensadas com tensão de 2 MPa. Avaliou-se no painel reconstituído, através da NBR 14810-1 (ABNT, 2013) e NBR 14810-2 (ABNT, 2018) as propriedades físicas: umidade, densidade, inchamento e absorção; bem como as propriedades mecânicas: MOR, MOE, força de ligação e compressão paralela. Os resultados encontrados mostram que o painel é classificado como de baixa densidade (419,8 kg/m³), e de propriedades físicas e mecânicas semelhantes a outros painéis de mesma classificação da literatura. Para MOR e MOE foram encontrados 5,24 MPa e 147,49 MPa de média, respectivamente. Abstract Sisal (Agave sisalana) is a plant exploited in semi-arid regions of Brazil for fiber production, but the floral scape of sisal (peduncle) is collected and often burned, causing environmental problems, even through irregular disposal. To circumvent this scenario, the objective of this work was to produce reconstituted panels using the sisal arrow and castor-based polyurethane resin. The panels were obtained using 175 g of crushed sisal arrow core with dimensions smaller than 2 mm and adopting 10% castor-based polyurethane resin and The samples were pressed under tension of 2 MPa. The properties of reconstituted panel were evaluated through NBR 14810-1 (ABNT, 2013) and NBR 14810-2 (ABNT, 2018), the physical properties were investigated: moisture, density, thickness swelling and absorption; as well as mechanical properties: MOR, MOE, internal bond and parallel compression. Resumo Objetivo Avaliar as respostas do ChatGPT a perguntas de pais e cuidadores acerca de amigdalectomia pediátrica, comparando as versões 3.5 e 4.0. Desenho do Estudo Estudo de validação do instrumento ChatGPT na resposta a perguntas sobre amigdalectomia pediátrica. Material e Métodos Foram colocadas 21 perguntas às versões 3.5 e 4.0 do ChatGPT. As respostas foram avaliadas de acordo com a mais recente guideline de amigdalectomia pediátrica da Academia Americana de Otorrinolaringologia. Compararam-se as avaliações das respostas geradas pelas duas versões utilizando o teste de McNemar (versão exata). Resultados Das 21 respostas, 13 (61.9%) foram consideradas corretas na versão 3.5, e 19 (90.5%) na 4.0 (p=0.031). A concordância inter-avaliador foi muito boa - Kappa Cohen=0.97 (v3.5) e 0.83 (v4.0). Conclusões A versão 3.5 do ChatGPT não deve ser considerada uma fonte fidedigna para esclarecimento dos cuidadores sobre amigdalectomia em idade pediátrica. A versão 4.0 parece ser uma ferramenta significativamente mais fiável.

Abstract Aim To assess the accuracy of ChatGPT in answering parents and caregivers’ questions about pediatric tonsillectomy, comparing its versions 3.5 and 4.0. Study Design Instrument validation study of ChatGPT in answering questions about pediatric tonsillectomy. Material & Methods We prompted ChatGPT versions 3.5 and 4.0 with 21 questions. The answers were assessed in accordance with the latest American Academy of Otolaryngology’s guideline on Tonsillectomy in Children. The assessment of the responses generated by the two versions were compared using McNemar's test (exact version). Results Of the 21 ChatGPT-generated answers, 13 (61.9%) were deemed accurate using version 3.5, and 19 (90.5%) using version 4.0 (p=0.031). The inter-rater agreement was very good - Cohen’s Kappa=0.97 (v3.5) and 0.83 (v4.0). Conclusion ChatGPT version 3.5 should not be regarded as a sufficiently accurate tool for guiding caregivers on pediatric tonsillectomy-related questions. Version 4.0 seems to be a significantly more reliable tool.

Resumo A produção de marula na África tem uma importância social, econômica e medicinal significativa. A região semiárida de Minas Gerais, Brasil, apresenta grande potencial para o cultivo de marula, pois as condições edafoclimáticas se assemelham às de seu habitat nativo. Portanto, estudos relacionados à propagação desta espécie no semiárido são essenciais para avanços em diversas áreas relacionadas à produção de marula. As sementes de marula apresentam uma dormência ainda indefinida e os métodos para superar esta dormência não estão bem estabelecidos. Além disso, não foi estabelecido um protocolo para propagação vegetativa. Consequentemente, existem obstáculos a serem superados e viabilizar a produção comercial de mudas de marula. Constatou-se que há poucas pesquisas sobre esta cultura no Brasil, apesar do potencial para estabelecer o cultivo de marula na região semiárida do país, proporcionando mais uma opção alimentar para a população brasileira. Além das suas propriedades medicinais e do potencial de criação de emprego e geração de rendimentos em zonas áridas, o cultivo desempenha um papel na redução da pobreza e no fortalecimento da agricultura na região semiárida.

Abstract The production of marula in Africa holds significant social, economic, and medicinal importance. The semi-arid region of Minas Gerais, Brazil, has great potential for marula cultivation, as the soil and climatic conditions resemble those of its native habitat. Therefore, studies related to the propagation of this species in the semi-arid conditions are essential for advancements in various areas related to marula production. Marula seeds exhibit an as yet undefined dormancy, and methods for overcoming this dormancy have not been well-established. Additionally, a protocol for vegetative propagation has not been established. Consequently, there are obstacles to overcome and enable the commercial production of marula seedlings. Furthermore, there is limited research on this crop in Brazil, despite the potential to establish marula cultivation in the semi-arid region of the country, providing another food option for the Brazilian population. In addition to its medicinal properties and the potential for job creation and income generation in dryland areas, the cultivation play a role in poverty reduction and strengthening agriculture in the semi-arid region.

Abstract The aim of the present study was to assess the agronomic performance and chemical composition of soil cultivated with palisade grass (Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu) subjected to growing doses of liquid blood waste. The experiment followed the completely randomized blocks design with six treatments and four repetitions. The following doses of processed liquid blood waste were applied to test palisade grass’ yield: 0, 150, 300, 450 and 600 m3 ha-1. In addition, it was used in conjunction with chemical fertilization at a rate of 50 kg ha-1 of P2O5 and 100 kg ha-1 of N (this treatment was not managed with liquid blood residue). Palisade grass forage yield was influenced by the fertilization strategy (P<0.001) - the highest values observed for this variable were recorded under blood waste doses of 450 m3 ha-1 and 600 m3 ha-1. The 0.0 - 0.20 m soil layer affect the organic matter fraction. On the other hand, phosphorus (P) content presented differences between fertilization strategies; thus, it was possible observing that the waste dose of 450 m3 ha-1 accounted for the highest availability of nutrients. The application of blood liquid waste as alternative source of organic fertilizers can be feasible, because it promotes significant increase in forage mass.

Resumen El objetivo fue evaluar el comportamiento agronómico y la composición química de suelos cultivados con pasto insurgente (Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu) sometido a dosis crecientes de residuos sanguíneos líquidos. El experimento siguió el diseño de bloques completamente al azar con seis tratamientos y cuatro repeticiones. Las siguientes dosis de residuos sanguíneos líquidos procesados se aplicaron para analizar el rendimiento del pasto insurgente: 0, 150, 300, 450 y 600 m3 ha-1. Además, se utilizó en conjunto con la fertilización química a razón de 50 kg ha-1 de P2O5 y 100 kg ha-1 de N (este tratamiento no se manejó con residuos sanguíneos líquidos). El rendimiento de forraje de pasto insurgente estuvo influenciado por la estrategia de fertilización (P<0.001) - los valores más altos observados para esta variable se registraron bajo dosis de residuos sanguíneos de 450 m3 ha-1 y 600 m3 ha-1. La capa de suelo de 0.0 a 0.20 m afecta a la fracción de materia orgánica. Por otro lado, el contenido de fósforo (P) presentó diferencias entre las estrategias de fertilización; así, fue posible observar que la dosis de residuos de 450 m3 ha-1 resultó en la mayor disponibilidad de nutrientes. La aplicación de residuos sanguíneos líquidos como fuente alternativa de fertilizantes orgánicos puede ser factible, ya que promueve un aumento significativo de la masa forrajera.

O estudo durou três anos em um campo de cultivo orgânico bem estabelecido (2018) e uma área inicial de cultivo orgânico (2019 e 2020) no Brasil. O delineamento foi em blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 2 × 5 (2018) e 2 × 6 (2019 e 2020), com quatro repetições. ABSTRACT The symbiosis of common beans with nitrogen-fixing bacteria provides an efficient approach to sustainable and economical food production. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the application of cost-effective nitrogen management strategies in organic common bean cultivation, including the application of poultry manure and organic liquid fertilizer, seed and co-inoculation with diazotrophic bacteria (Azospirillum brasilense and/or Rhizobium tropici), and supplementary Rhizobium tropici inoculation. The study spanned three years in a well-established organic cultivation field (2018) and an initial organic cultivation area (2019 and 2020) in Brazil. Abstract The study and understanding of the concepts related to critical state soil mechanics is relatively recent in Brazil, especially among practicing geotechnical engineers in the mining industry, where simpler solutions were traditionally adopted. This raises the necessity to develop studies capable of promoting discussions about the benefits of the approaches from the critical state theory. In this context, this research aims to evaluate the behavior of an iron ore tailings from the Quadrilátero Ferrífero through critical state computational models, considering the Modified Cam-Clay and NorSand model. The numerical results from the use of the models simulated the ductile/brittle behavior of the material in drained shear and it was observed that for loose samples both models produced similar results. The simulations in undrained shear, on the other hand, highlighted the differences between the models, with the NorSand showing a strength loss in undrained shear (strain-softening) whereas the Modified Cam-Clay Model exhibited a ductile behavior. In general, the NorSand model was the one that presented the best numerical response in relation to the experimental behavior, which may be linked to the use of the largest number of parameters, to the concept that particulate materials exist in a set of states and the silty characteristic of the material. Additionally, it was observed the difficulty to simulate the dense behavior of materials with the model, which may be associated with the formation of ‘shear bands’ during the experimental test and the complexity of modeling the occurrence of this phenomenon in virtual tests using the NorSand model.
