RESUMEN: La importancia y relevancia de los cursos e-learning en medicina y ciencias de la salud ha aumentado significativamente en la última década. A pesar de ello, existen pocas experiencias docentes publicadas de cursos de histología e-learning en la literatura a nivel mundial. El curso de histología que diseñamos se estructuró en la plataforma Moodle, y los contenidos se propusieron en formato síncrono (zoom) y asíncrono (grabaciones). También incluimos el uso de herramientas gratuitas de microscopía virtual. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo investigar el impacto de un curso de histología e-learning en la satisfacción y el rendimiento de los estudiantes de medicina, enfermería y obstetricia. La muestra incluyó 424 estudiantes chilenos de medicina, enfermería y obstetricia de dos cohortes. Se aplicó una encuesta tipo Likert al final del curso. Se realizó un análisis exploratorio y una regresión por mínimos cuadrados ordinarios. En este estudio, presentamos una experiencia positiva de un curso de e-learning de histología. El análisis factorial exploratorio reveló tres factores principales relacionados con la "satisfacción sobre el aprendizaje e-learning", "clases presenciales versus clases virtuales" y el "diseño del curso y la calidad de la enseñanza". También encontramos que existía una relación positiva y significativa entre las percepciones de los estudiantes sobre la adaptación del curso de histología tradicional (presencial) a un formato e-learning y su rendimiento académico. Nuestro estudio muestra que los cursos de histología e-learning que integran clases teóricas y sesiones prácticas pueden ser una valiosa herramienta de enseñanza. Los responsables de la elaboración de planes de estudios y los profesores de histología deben tener en cuenta las limitaciones y ventajas de este tipo de enseñanza y sugerimos incorporar estos tres factores al diseño y la evaluación de los cursos de histología en línea.

SUMMARY: The importance and relevance of e-learning courses in medicine and health sciences has increased significantly in the last decade. Despite this, there are few published teaching experiences of e-learning histology courses in the literature worldwide. The histology course we designed was structured on the Moodle platform as a learning management system, and the content was proposed in a synchronous (zoom) and asynchronous (recordings) format. We also included the use of free virtual microscopy tools. This study aimed to investigate the impact of an e-learning histology course on the satisfaction and performance of medical, nursing and midwifery students. The sample included 424 Chilean medical, nursing, and midwifery students from two cohorts. A Likert-type survey was administered at the end of the course. We performed exploratory analysis and ordinary least squares regression. In this study, we present a positive experience of an e-learning histology course. Exploratory factor analysis revealed three main factors related to "e- learning satisfaction", "in-person class activities", and "course design and teaching quality". We also found that there was a positive and significant relationship between students' perceptions of the adaptation of the traditional (face-to-face) histology course into an e-learning format and their academic performance. Our study shows that e-learning histology courses that integrate lectures and practical sessions can be a valuable teaching method for learning histology. Curriculum developers and teachers need to consider the limitations and advantages of this type of teaching and incorporate these three factors into the design and assessment of e-learning histology courses.

ABSTRACT Integrative studies are important for a better understanding of the functional development of fish digestive systems and the consequent design of suitable feeding regimes and ad-hoc diets. To characterize the ontogeny of digestive function in larvae and juveniles of two atherinopsids from South America, Odontesthes bonariensis and O. hatcheri, morphologic, histologic, and intestinal enzyme biochemical analyses were performed. Both species showed a functional digestive system from one week after hatching (wah) with a sustained high-level activity of the cytosolic enzyme leucine alanine peptidase (leu-ala) until 9 and 13 wah in O. hatcheri and O. bonariensis, respectively. Maximum specific leu-ala activities in both species were higher compared to other agastric and most gastric fish. These results and the abundant pinocytic vacuoles in the posterior intestine suggest that cytosolic digestion is crucial for these species. It seems that their apparent anatomically simple digestive system is compensated by an uncommonly early development and function of the digestive tract and accessory organs accompanied by high intestinal cytosolic activity. The above findings contribute to the understanding of the Atherinopsidae digestive model and, for the first time, suggest that under farming conditions, these species could be weaned at an early developmental stage with an appropriate balanced diet.

Abstract The effective access to various financial products can be decisive to use efficiently the opportunities offered by the financial market. The purpose of this research is to determine the inclusion degree of financing in Mexico for 2021, so, a method used was through spatial econometrics to identify clusters at municipal level. The results showed that administrative units that have elevated levels of correlation in indicators such as: access roads, number of credit products and number of deposit accounts; have more financial inclusion in CDMX’s administrative units. On the other hand, zones with lowest levels of financial inclusion correspond to Oaxaca and Guerrero counties. The development of a financial inclusion strategy is proposed according to the needs of the identified clusters. This work innovates in presenting a cluster analysis at the municipal level for financial inclusion.

Resumen El contar con acceso efectivo a diversos productos financieros puede ser determinante para explotar de manera eficiente el área de oportunidades que brinda el mercado financiero para la sociedad. Esta investigación tiene como propósito determinar el grado de inclusión de los productos y servicios del sector financiero en México para el año 2021, para lo cual, se utiliza un método mediante econometría espacial para la identificación de clusters a nivel municipal. Los resultados revelan que los municipios que cuentan con niveles altos de correlación en indicadores como: vías de acceso, cantidad de productos de crédito y cantidad de cuentas de captación; cuentan con mayor inclusión financiera, tales como las alcaldías de la CDMX. Por otro lado, las zonas que cuentan con niveles más bajos de inclusión financiera corresponden a los municipios de las entidades federativas de Oaxaca y Guerrero. Se propone el desarrollo de una estrategia de inclusión financiera de acuerdo con las necesidades de los clusters identificados. Este trabajo innova en presentar un análisis cluster a nivel municipal para la inclusión financiera.

ABSTRACT The Guatemalan Caribbean has a deepwater fishing area close to the shore around the Cayman Trench. This study reports the first record of the bluntnose sixgill shark (Hexanchus griseus) from this fishing area. Fishery-independent surveys using longlines at ~430-465 m depth, ~11 km northeast of El Quetzalito fishing village, were conducted in 2022 and 2023. Two bluntnose sixgill sharks were captured during these surveys. The sharks were females with total lengths of 300 and 310 cm, with morphological characteristics consistent with this species. These are the first confirmed records of bluntnose sixgill sharks in the western Caribbean Sea. Expanding coastal fisheries to deeper waters presents an emerging threat to deep-sea chondrichthyans in the region. Therefore, periodic fisheries monitoring is needed to estimate their vulnerability to fishing pressure.

ABSTRACT Deepwater fishing operations occur close to the shore of the Guatemalan Caribbean. In a study to characterize the deepwater species present in the fishing area, the incidental catch of a kitefin shark, Dalatias licha, was recorded at a depth of ~284-334 m, ca. 11 km northeast of El Quetzalito fishing village. The adult female with a total length of 1420 mm had morphological characteristics consistent with D. licha, which was confirmed by molecular methods. First record of D. licha in the western Caribbean region, a species cataloged at risk by the IUCN red list. With this record, the number of shark species known in the Guatemalan Caribbean increases to 25.

Resumen La presente revisión sistemática sintetizó la evidencia de la interacción de la calidad de vida con el mindfulness rasgo en población adulta. Para esto, basado en la metodología PRISMA, se consideraron artículos cuantitativos con resultados primarios de asociación entre calidad de vida y mindfulness en adultos de 18 a 65 años, publicados entre 1979 y 2022, en inglés y español. Se realizaron búsquedas en Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed y PsycNet. El riesgo de sesgo se evaluó mediante una herramienta de puntuación del rigor metodológico. Al finalizar, 10 artículos cumplieron los criterios, los cuales evidencian que el mindfulness rasgo puede mejorar la calidad de vida de los adultos de forma moderada a alta, debido al proceso de aceptación y afrontamiento de manera consciente, sin juicios y reacciones, al minimizar efectos negativos como el estrés. Además, se identifican retos respecto a la conceptualización, medición e inclusión de terceras variables.

Abstract The present systematic review synthesizes the evidence of the interaction of quality of life with trait mindfulness in the adult population. Following the PRISMA methodology, quantitative articles with primary results on the association between quality of life and mindfulness in adults aged 18 to 65 years, published between 1979 and 2022 in English and Spanish, were considered. Searches were carried out in Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and PsycNet. The risk of bias was assessed using a methodological rigor scoring tool. In the end, 10 articles that met the criteria showed that the mindfulness trait may improve the quality of life of adults in a moderate to high way, due to the process of acceptance and coping consciously, without judgments and reactions, minimizing negative effects such as stress. Additionally, challenges regarding the conceptualization, measurement, and inclusion of third variables were identified.

Resumen La cuenca del Usumacinta en el sureste de México es una de las de mayor riqueza ictiofaunística en el país, pero también una de las menos estudiadas. En el presente trabajo se clasificaron todas las especies registradas en la zona de influencia de la Reserva de la Biosfera Montes Azules de acuerdo con sus atributos funcionales y se analizaron las comunidades de peces de 3 sitios contrastantes. Se registraron 7 especies nativas con combinaciones de atributos únicas y 4 conjuntos de especies con alta similitud funcional. Se detectó la presencia de especies exóticas, pero únicamente en el cauce principal del río Lacantún. La abundancia relativa de las especies se distribuyó en todo el espectro funcional, excepto en el arroyo Danta, donde 2 entidades funcionales fueron las dominantes. El sitio Lacantún tuvo la mayor riqueza tanto taxonómica como funcional, pero con una diversidad intermedia debido a la distribución de las abundancias relativas. La clasificación sugerida en el presente estudio puede utilizarse para analizar otras series de datos para entender mejor el funcionamiento ecológico de las comunidades y las diferencias entre sitios sujetos a procesos de antropización en la región.

Abstract The Usumacinta River basin in southeastern Mexico has one of the country’s richest but least studied ichthyofaunas. This study presents a classification of functional traits for all fish species recorded in the area of influence of the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve and a comparative analysis of the functional diversity among 3 contrasting sites. Seven native species, each with unique functional attribute combinations, and 4 sets of species with high functional similarity were identified. While exotic species were detected, they were found exclusively in the main channel of the Lacantún River. The relative abundance of species spanned the functional spectrum, except in the Danta stream, where 2 dominant functional entities were observed. The Lacantún site exhibited the highest taxonomic and functional richness, though with intermediate diversity attributed to the distribution of relative abundances. The functional classification proposed in this study can serve as a framework for analyzing other data series, facilitating a deeper understanding of ecological function across communities and for exploring variability among sites subject to differential anthropogenic impacts in the region.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is part of the advances in the treatment of patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma in recent years. Objective: To evaluate the results of autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in patients with multiple myeloma. Methods: A descriptive, retrospective and cohort study was carried out, forming a sample of 15 patients treated in the Hematology Service at Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical Surgical Hospital from November 2009 to November 2019. Results: The average age was 54.67 years; 53.3% were male and all debuted in Durie-Salmon stage III. As conditioning for the transplant, 67.7% received high doses of melphalan at doses of 200 mg/m2. Cytopenias and gastrointestinal toxicity were the most common complications (93.3%). The recovery of neutrophil and platelet numbers occurred on average after 11 days, only two patients died (13.3%) and 13 (86.7%) are in complete remission with a probability of overall survival at 5 years, 77.8%. Conclusions: Transplantation of autologous hematopoietic stem cells with the use of high doses of melphalan as conditioning in patients with multiple myeloma is a feasible procedure with a relatively low mortality and demonstrates that its inclusion in the treatment of patients considerably improves their survival expectations.

RESUMEN Introducción: El trasplante de progenitores hematopoyéticos autólogo forma parte de los avances en la terapéutica de pacientes con diagnóstico del mieloma múltiple durante los últimos años. Objetivo: Evaluar los resultados del trasplante de progenitores hematopoyéticos autólogo en pacientes con mieloma múltiple. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, retrospectivo y de cohorte, conformándose una muestra de 15 pacientes atendidos en el Servicio de Hematología del Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico Hermanos Ameijeiras durante el período comprendido de noviembre de 2009 a noviembre de 2019. Resultados: En el estudio realizado la edad promedio fue de 54,67 años; el 53,3 % fue del sexo masculino y todos debutaron en estadio III de Durie-Salmon. Como acondicionamiento para el trasplante el 67,7 % recibió altas dosis de melfalán en dosis de 200 mg/m2. Las citopenias y la toxicidad gastrointestinal fueron las complicaciones más frecuentes (93,3 %). La recuperación de las cifras de neutrófilos y plaquetas ocurrió como promedio a los 11 días. Solo dos pacientes fallecieron (13,3 %) y 13 (86,7 %) se encuentran en remisión completa con una probabilidad de sobrevida global a los 5 años, el 77,8 %. Conclusiones: El trasplante de progenitores hematopoyéticos autólogo con el empleo de altas dosis de melfalán como acondicionamiento en pacientes con mieloma múltiple es un proceder realizable con una mortalidad relativamente baja y demuestra que su inclusión en el tratamiento de los pacientes mejora considerablemente sus expectativas de sobrevida.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The results shown during the last years by haploidentical hematopoietic transplantation have made possible to benefit an increasing number of patients. Objective: To evaluate the results of haploidentical hematopoietic transplantation at the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital. Method: A retrospective and descriptive study of all patients who underwent haplo-HSCT was carried out at the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital, from 2016 to 2020. The sample consisted of 15 patients and 16 transplants. Results: Acute leukemias predominated among transplant patients. Most of the cases were transplanted in complete remission and the type of conditioning regime most applied was myeloablative. The average age of the donors was 49 years and most of them were the mothers (62.5%). Peripheral blood was the most widely used source of stem cells (81.2%). The average of the recovery of absolute neutrophil count and platelet count were 17 and 16.7 days, respectively. Acute GVHD was more frequent (50.0%). Non-relapse mortality at one year was 33.3%; disease relapse was the predominant cause of death (26.6%).The estimated overall survival at two years was 40%. Conclusions: The performance of haploidentical hematopoietic transplantation at the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital demonstrates that it is a feasible procedure in our country and it promises to improve the life expectancy of a group of patients with various hemopathies and no HLA-identical donors.

RESUMEN Introducción: Los resultados que hasta ahora ha mostrado el trasplante hematopoyético haploidéntico han posibilitado beneficiar un número creciente de pacientes. Objetivo: Evaluar los resultados del trasplante hematopoyético haploidéntico en el Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico Hermanos Ameijeiras. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo y descriptivo de todos los pacientes a los que se les realizó este tipo de trasplante, en el Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico Hermanos Ameijeiras, durante el período de 2016 a 2020. La muestra quedó compuesta por 15 pacientes y 16 trasplantes. Resultados: Predominaron las leucemias agudas entre las enfermedades de base. La mayor parte de los casos se trasplantaron con enfermedad controlada y el tipo de tratamiento acondicionante más aplicado fue el mieloablativo. La edad promedio de los donantes fue de 49 años y los familiares más empleados fueron las madres (62,5 %). La fuente de células progenitoras hematopoyéticas más utilizada fue la sangre periférica (81,2 %). La recuperación hematológica del conteo absoluto de neutrófilos y de las plaquetas tomó como promedio 17 y 16,7 días, respectivamente. Resultó más frecuente la enfermedad injerto contra receptor aguda (50,0 %). La mortalidad no relacionada con recaída fue de un 33,3 %; predominó como causa de muerte la recaída de la enfermedad (26,6 %). La sobrevida global estimada a los dos años resultó de un 40 %. Conclusiones: La realización del trasplante hematopoyético haploidéntico en el Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico Hermanos Ameijeiras demuestra que es un procedimiento factible en Cuba y que promete mejorar la expectativa de vida de un grupo de pacientes con hemopatías y sin donantes antígenos leucocitarios humanos idénticos.

Método: cuasiexperimental pretest-postest, con alumnos de la carrera de Licenciatura en Enfermería de una institución educativa. Muestra de 29 alumnos (Grupo Experimental) y 74 (Grupo Control). El Grupo Experimental solucionó cuatro escenarios bajo el método de Aprendizaje Basado en Problemas con los 7 pasos propuestos por la Universidad de McMaster, en un programa de Gestión del Cuidado en modalidad a distancia. El instrumento autoinformado evaluó las habilidades de Gestión del Cuidado pretesty postesten ambos grupos. Se obtuvieron valores medios y se realizó estadística descriptiva e inferencial (t de Student, t pareada, regresión lineal). Resultados: el Grupo Experimental obtuvo puntuaciones más elevadas en habilidades analíticas, de acción y globales que el Grupo Control (p<0,05). No se registraron diferencias en las habilidades interpersonales ni en el uso de la información. El Grupo Control no presentó diferencias significativas antes y después de la enseñanza habitual, mientras que en el Grupo Experimental sí se reportaron diferencias (p<0,05). Conclusión: a pesar de que existe poca evidencia en el desarrollo de habilidades de Gestión del Cuidado en Enfermería, el presente estudio demuestra que el Aprendizaje Basado en Problemas es un método efectivo y significativo en educación a distancia. Objective: to assess the preliminary effect of Problem-Based Learning on Care Management skills. Method: a quasi-experimental pre- and post-test conducted with students attending the Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing offered by an educational institution. The sample was comprised by 29 (Experimental Group) and 74 (Control Group) students. The Experimental Group solved four scenarios under the Problem-Based Learning method with the 7 steps proposed by McMaster University, in a Care Management program in distance mode. The self-reporting instrument assessed the pre- and post-test Care Management skills in both groups. Mean values were obtained and descriptive and inferential statistics were performed (Student’s t, paired t, linear regression). Results: the Experimental Group obtained higher scores in analytical, action-related and global skills than the Control Group (p<0.05). No differences were recorded in interpersonal skills or in use of the information. The Control presented no significant differences before and after usual teaching, whereas differences were in fact reported in the Experimental Group (p<0.05). Conclusion: despite the fact that there is little evidence on the development of Nursing Care Management skills, the current study shows that Problem-Based Learning is an effective and significant method in remote education. Objetivo: avaliar o efeito preliminar da Aprendizagem Baseada em Problemas nas habilidades de Gestão do Cuidado. Método: pré e pós-teste quase experimental, realizado com alunos do curso de Bacharelado em Enfermagem de uma instituição de ensino. A amostra foi composta por 29 (Grupo Experimental) e 74 (Grupo Controle). O Grupo Experimental resolveu quatro cenários sob o método de Aprendizagem Baseada em Problemas com os 7 passos propostos pela McMaster University, em um programa de Gestão do Cuidado na modalidade à distância. O instrumento de autorrelato avaliou as habilidades de Gestão do Cuidado pré e pós-teste em ambos os grupos. Valores médios foram obtidos e estatísticas descritivas e inferenciais foram realizadas (t de Student, t pareado, regressão linear). ABSTRACT Introduction: SOBERANA® 01 was developed at the Finlay Vaccine Institute to combat the epidemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This candidate is based on the Receptor Binding Domain (RBD) in dimeric form combined with purified vesicles from outer membrane of serogroup B meningococcus as immunopotentiator of the immune response adsorbed on aluminum hydroxide. Methods: The antigen was designed with the peculiarity of having a free cysteine at position 538, which allows the formation of RBD dimers. In preclinical studies it was evaluated the immunogenicity of the dimer combined with the outer membrane vesicles and they were performed toxicological studies. In addition, it was designed a Phase I clinical study in subjects from 19 to 59 years old. Results: The antigenic presentation in the form of dimer combined with the vesicles proved to be safe and immunogenic in animal models, observing a significant increase in the immune response when compared to the monomeric form. During the Phase I clinical evaluation, which included apparently healthy subjects between the ages of 19 and 59, it was demonstrated that SOBERANA® 01 lead to a significant increase in the neutralizing antibody response compared to the use of aluminum hydroxide as the sole adjuvant. After the third dose, 100% of the subjects seroconverted to the group immunized with SOBERANA® 01. Conclusions: It was demonstrated the immunogenicity and neutralizing capacity of the antibodies induced by SOBERANA® 01. The analysis of the sera of the vaccinated persons demonstrated that the formulation containing the OMVs causes a more potent neutralizing effect against several RBD mutants present in VOCs, including the RBD triple mutants of the beta variant.

RESUMEN Introducción: SOBERANA® 01 se desarrolló en el Instituto Finlay de Vacunas para el enfrentamiento a la epidemia causada por el virus SARS-CoV-2. Este candidato se basa en el dominio de unión al receptor en forma dimérica, combinado con vesículas purificadas de membrana externa de meningococo del serogrupo B como inmunopotenciador de la respuesta inmune adsorbidos en hidróxido de aluminio. Métodos: Se diseñó el antígeno con la peculiaridad de tener una cisteína libre en la posición 538, que permite la formación de dímeros del dominio de unión al receptor. En estudios preclínicos se evaluó la inmunogenicidad del dímero combinado con las vesículas de membrana externa y se realizaron estudios toxicológicos. Además, se diseñó un estudio clínico fase I en sujetos de 19 años a 59 años. Resultados: La presentación antigénica en forma de dímero combinado con las vesículas demostró ser segura e inmunogénica en modelos animales observando un incremento significativo de la respuesta inmune cuando se compara con la forma monomérica. Durante la evaluación clínica fase I, que incluyeron sujetos aparentemente sanos de entre 19 años y 59 años de edad, se demostró que SOBERANA® 01 conduce a un aumento importante en la respuesta de anticuerpos neutralizantes en comparación con el uso de hidróxido de aluminio como único adyuvante. Después de la tercera dosis, el 100 % de los sujetos seroconvirtieron en el grupo inmunizado con SOBERANA® 01. Conclusiones: Se demostró la inmunogenicidad y la capacidad neutralizante de los anticuerpos inducidos por SOBERANA® 01. El análisis de los sueros de las personas vacunadas demostró que la formulación que contiene las vesículas de membrana externa provoca un efecto neutralizante más potente contra varios mutantes del dominio de unión al receptor presentes en los COV, incluidos los mutantes triples del dominio de unión al receptor de la variante Beta.

Resumen Antecedentes: El cáncer de células pequeñas (CPCP) representa el 13-15% del total de neoplasias primarias de pulmón. Se caracteriza por su rapidez en la tasa de crecimiento y en el desarrollo de metástasis a distancia. Objetivos: Orientar y estandarizar el tratamiento del CPCP enfermedad extensa en México basado en evidencia clínica nacional e internacional. Material y métodos: Este documento se desarrolló como una colaboración del Instituto Nacional de Cancerología y la Sociedad Mexicana de Oncología en cumplimiento con estándares internacionales. Se integró un grupo conformado por oncólogos médicos, cirujanos oncólogos, cirujanos de tórax, radio-oncólogos y metodólogos con experiencia en revisiones sistemáticas de la literatura y guías de práctica clínica. Resultados: Se consensaron, por el método Delphi y en reuniones a distancia, las recomendaciones en CPCP enfermedad extensa, producto de preguntas de trabajo. Se identificó y evaluó la evidencia científica que responde a cada una de dichas preguntas clínicas antes de incorporarla al cuerpo de la guía. Conclusión: Esta guía proporciona recomendaciones clínicas para el manejo de la enfermedad extensa del CPCP y durante el proceso de toma de decisiones de los clínicos involucrados con su manejo en nuestro país para mejorar la calidad de la atención clínica para estos pacientes.

Abstract Background: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) represents 13-15% of all primary lung neoplasms and is characterized by its rapid growth rate and the rapid development of distant metastases. Objectives: To guide and standardize the treatment of extensive disease small cell lung cancer in Mexico based on national and international clinical evidence. Material and methods: This document was developed as a collaboration between the National Cancer Institute and the Mexican Society of Oncology in compliance with international standards. An interdisciplinary group was formed, including medical oncologists, oncological surgeons, thoracic surgeons, radiation oncologists, and methodologists with experience in systematic reviews of the literature and clinical practice guidelines. Results: A consensus was reached, both by the Delphi method and in remote meetings, of extensive disease recommendations resulting from work questions. The scientific evidence that answers each of these clinical questions was identified and critically evaluated, before being incorporated into the body of evidence of the Guide. Conclusions: This Clinical Practice Guide provides clinical recommendations for the management of extensive disease of SCLC to contribute to the decision-making process of the clinicians involved with its management in our country, hoping that this will contribute to improving the quality of clinical care in these patients.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the antibacterial effect of electrolytically generated hypochlorous acid on Streptococcus gordonii, Fusobacterium nucleatum, and Porphyromonas gingivalis. Material and Methods: In this in vitro experiment, the effect of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) on the strains S. gordonii, F. nucleatum, and P. gingivalis was evaluated using 4% sodium hypochlorite, 0.12% chlorhexidine, and distilled water as controls. The four groups were placed on each plate, and each group was replicated five times. The agar diffusion method by zones measurement was used. The data were processed with SPSS using the Kruskal-Wallis test and multiple comparison tests. Results: Hypochlorous acid showed an average inhibition halo of 9.28 mm on S. gordonii. As expected with distilled water, no zone of inhibition was noted for any of the bacteria, nor were zones of inhibition observed with HOCl for F. nucleatum and P. gingivalis. Conclusion: Hypochlorous acid showed antimicrobial properties against only S. gordonii and was less effective than 4% sodium hypochlorite and 0.12% chlorhexidine, although no significant differences were found between the latter. ABSTRACT Introduction: The management of cerebral gliomas during the last four decades has undergone relevant changes in terms of its study and treatment. Among these changes is the development of imaging, neurophysiological and histopathological techniques. The present study attempts to estimate the impact that the use of these technologies has had on the prognosis of patients. Material and Method: Comprehensive review of the literature in digital and print media covering mostly publications and communications from the 1980s to the present. 1 case recently submitted to surgery by the authors in which several of these tools were used is exposed, presenting the analysis that was carried out in the surgical planning. Results: The literature shows consistent but discrete improvements in the prognosis associated with the use of intraoperative complementary technologies in cerebral gliomas, related to the help they would provide in the extension of tumor resection and functional preservation. Conclusions: The intensive use of the complementary technologies described seems advisable if surgical planning anticipates well-founded benefits in terms of morbidity and mortality for a particular patient. Caution should be exercised in anticipating and generalizing the global prognostic impact they may have, a benefit that is consistent in the literature but currently seems modest in general terms especially for high grade gliomas.

RESUMEN Introducción: El manejo de los gliomas cerebrales durante las últimas cuatro décadas ha sufrido cambios relevantes en su estudio y tratamiento. Dentro de estos cambios se encuentra el desarrollo de técnicas imagenológicas, neurofisiológicas e histopatológicas. El presente trabajo intenta estimar el impacto que la utilización de dichas tecnologías ha tenido sobre el pronóstico de los pacientes. Material y método: Revisión exhaustiva de la literatura en medios digitales e impresos abarcando mayormente publicaciones y comunicaciones desde la década de 1980 hasta el presente. Se expone 1 caso sometido recientemente a cirugía por los autores en el que se utilizaron varias de estas herramientas, presentando el análisis que se llevó a cabo en la planificación quirúrgica. Resultados: La literatura muestra mejorías consistentes pero discretas en el pronóstico asociado al uso de tecnologías complementarias intraoperatorias en gliomas cerebrales, relacionadas a la ayuda que prestarían en la extensión de la resección tumoral y en la preservación funcional. Conclusiones: La utilización intensiva de las tecnologías complementarias descritas parece recomendable si la planificación quirúrgica anticipa beneficios fundados en cuanto a morbi-mortalidad para un paciente en particular. Se debe ser cauto en anticipar y generalizar el impacto pronóstico global que puedan tener, beneficio que es consistente en la literatura pero que en estos momentos parece modesto en términos generales en especial para gliomas de alto grado.
