Abstract The outdoor use of wood can be improved by coating the wood surface with varnish to reduce the effects of natural weathering. However, some varnishes quickly lose their ability to protect wood, and nanoscale additives have been used to mitigate this negative effect, preferably renewable and biodegradable. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of varnishes reinforced with spray-dried nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) in a natural weathering test. For this purpose, two varnishes, waterborne and non-waterborne, with 0, 5, and 10% (w/w) NFC addition were applied to Pinus taeda tangential wood samples, which were exposed to natural weathering for half a year, during the period from January to June 2019, in Curitiba, PR, Brazil. Adherence and impact resistance tests were performed to evaluate the surface properties of the varnishes, and the effect of natural weathering on the wood surface was evaluated using quantitative colorimetric analyses (CIELab System). The varnishes did not perform well in the adhesion and impact test. While no significant effects were observed in surface tests, due to the addition of spray-dried NFC, varnishes reinforced with 5% NFC exhibited reduced overall color variation, maintaining yellow and red pigmentation. This suggests that incorporating 5% spray-dried NFC into varnishes did not compromise coating properties and aided in mitigating the impact of natural weathering on wood color variation. Abstract Objective: To investigate the effect of a single oral dose of 200,000 IU of vitamin D3 on antiphospholipid antibodies in hospitalized patients with moderate to severe COVID-19. Methods: This is a post-hoc, exploratory analysis from a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial performed in two centers in São Paulo, Brazil. Hospitalized patients with COVID-19 were randomly assigned to receive either vitamin D3 (n = 97) or placebo (n = 97). In this post-hoc analysis, the endpoints were titers and frequency of anti–β2-Glycoprotein-I (aβ2-GP) and Anticardiolipin (aCL) antibodies [Immunoglobulin G, M and A (IgG, IgM and IgA)]. Results: Overall mean (SD) age was 55.3 (13.9) years, Body Mass Index (BMI) was 32.2 (7.1 kg/m²), and 106 participants (54.6 %) were male. There was a significant group by time interaction (p = 0.046) for frequency of aCL IgG, with increased values from baseline to discharge in the placebo group [n (%), from 13 (13.4) to 25 (25.8)] compared to the vitamin D3 [from 25 (25.8) to 29 (29.9)]. However, the frequency of aCL IgG did not change between the groups on discharge. No significant differences between vitamin D3 and placebo groups were found for any other autoantibodies. Conclusion: These findings do not support the use of a single oral dose of 200,000 IU of vitamin D3 to modulate autoantibodies in hospitalized patients with moderate to severe COVID-19. Abstract Background: Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) carries a significant morbidity and mortality burden; however, there is scarce information in Latin American. Objective: To analyze the functional prognosis and mortality rates among participants in the Latin American Stroke Registry (LASE). Methods: Eighteen centers across Latin American compiled data on demographics, vascular risk factors, clinical stroke description, ancillary tests, and functional outcomes in hospital stay of patients included from January 2012 to January 2017. All these variables were analyzed based on functional outcome at hospital discharge. Results: We included 495 patients with ICH, representing 10.3% of all collected stroke subtypes in LASE. The median in-hospital stay was 9 days (interquartile range, 1-30); 285 (57.6%) were male (median age, 62 years) and 210 female (median age, 65 years). A poor functional outcome (modified Rankin scale, 3-6) was observed in 214 (43.2%) patients, with 62.5% of women (p < 0.009). Mortality was documented in 12.5% of ICH patients. The Kaplan-Meier survival curves presented difference in mortality, with higher frequency in patients > 80 years (HR 1.89, 95%CI 1.07-3.35, p = 0.028), with GCS < 8 (HR 0.19, 95%CI 0.11-0.33, p = < 0.001), ventricular irruption (HR 1.88, 95%CI 1.09-3.24, p = 0.0282), and hematoma volume > 30 cc (HR 2.36, 95%CI 1.17 - 4.77, p = 0.016). Conclusions: Our study demonstrates a poor functional prognosis in 43.2% of ICH patients, with the risk factors for higher mortality being age over 80 years, higher GCS values, and ventricular irruption in the LASE. Our collaborative study contributes substantial insight into the factors influencing ICH occurrence, prognosis, and outcomes in Latin America.

Resumen Introducción: La Hemorragia Intracraneal (ICH) conlleva una importante carga de morbilidad y mortalidad; sin embargo, existe escasa información en Latinoamérica. Objetivo: Analizar el pronóstico funcional y las tasas de mortalidad entre los participantes del Registro Latinoamericano de Enfermedad Vascular Cerebral (LASE). Métodos: Dieciocho centros de toda Latinoamérica recopilaron datos demográficos, factores de riesgo vascular, descripción clínica, pruebas auxiliares y resultados funcionales en la estancia hospitalaria de los pacientes incluidos entre enero de 2012 y enero de 2017. Todas estas variables se analizaron en función del resultado funcional al alta hospitalaria. Resultados: Se incluyeron 495 pacientes con ICH, que representan el 10.3% de todos los subtipos de enfermedad vascular cerebral en LASE. La mediana de estancia hospitalaria fue de 9 dias (rango intercuartil, 1-30); 285 (57.6%) fueron hombres (mediana de edad, 62 años) and 210 mujeres (mediana de edad, 65 años). Un mal resultado funcional (Escala modificada de Rankin, 3-6) fue observado en 214 (43.2%) pacientes, con un 62.5% de mujeres (p < 0.009). Se documento mortalidad en 12.5% de los pacientes con ICH. Resumo Devido à sua eficácia e aos seus perfis de segurança, os anticoagulantes orais diretos (DOACs) tornaram-se o padrão de cuidado para a terapia aguda e de longo prazo de tromboembolismo venoso (TEV). As diretrizes da Sociedade Internacional de Trombose e Hemostasia de 2021 recomendam o uso de dosagens padrão de DOACs em pacientes com índice de massa corporal (IMC) > 40 kg/m2 ou peso > 120 kg. O uso de DOACs em pacientes com obesidade mórbida e TEV, incluindo embolia pulmonar aguda, ainda não foi esclarecido. Uma mulher com obesidade mórbida na faixa dos 30 anos que apresentou piora aguda da dispneia foi diagnosticada com embolia pulmonar aguda de risco intermediário-alto e trombose venosa profunda proximal concomitante, com o cenário clínico desafiador de tratá-la com rivaroxabana. Abstract Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have become the standard of care for acute and long-term therapy for venous thromboembolism (VTE) due to their efficacy and safety profiles. The 2021 International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis guidelines recommend using standard DOAC dosages in patients with BMI >40 kg/m2 or weight >120 kg. Use of DOACs remains uncertain in morbidly obese patients with VTE, including acute PE. A morbidly obese woman in her 30s who presented with acute worsening of dyspnea was diagnosed with acute intermediate-high risk acute pulmonary embolism and concomitant proximal deep vein thrombosis, constituting a clinically challenging scenario for treating her with rivaroxaban. Standard doses of rivaroxaban for acute and extended phase treatment of venous thromboembolism in individuals with morbid obesity at BMI>70 kg/m2 may be effective, and safe. Resumen Introducción: la capilaroscopia es un método no invasivo que permite observar la microvasculatura en el área periungueal. Los resultados informados pueden ser altamente variables entre distintos observadores. A lo largo del tiempo surgieron métodos cuantitativos y semicuantitativos para mejorar la reproducibilidad. Objetivos: conocer el nivel de acuerdo intra e interobservador al informar los diferentes patrones capilaroscópicos en individuos con diferente nivel de entrenamiento. Materiales y métodos: estudio de corte transversal. Participaron médicos reumatólogos especialistas y en formación que habían realizado previamente un curso virtual de capacitación en capilaroscopia. Recibieron 40 imágenes capilaroscópicas proyectadas en una presentación de PowerPoint y debían responder a través de un cuestionario digital. Se evaluó la concordancia de respuestas intra e interobservador. Resultados: se encontró un alto nivel de concordancia global con un kappa 0,66 IC 95% (0,63-0,70) p<0,0000. También en otros grupos como reumatólogos en formación: kappa 0,65 IC 95% (0,60-0,71) p=0,0000, y médicos reumatólogos: kappa 0,67 IC 95% (0,62-0,72) p=0,0000. Conclusiones: el nivel de concordancia encontrado fue globalmente alto, independientemente del nivel de entrenamiento de los profesionales, y de ser o no reumatólogo. La concordancia fue superior cuando se comparó a quienes tenían más de 4 años de experiencia en la realización de videocapilaroscopia.

Abstract Introduction: videoapillaroscopy is a non-invasive method that allows the observation of the microvasculature in the periungual area. Reported results can be highly variable between different observers. Over time, quantitative and semi-quantitative methods emerged to improve reproducibility. Objetives: to know the level of intra and interobserver agreement when reporting the different capillaroscopic patterns in individuals with different levels of training. Materials and methods: cross section study. Specialist rheumatologists and those in training who had previously completed a virtual capillaroscopy training course participated. They received 40 capillaroscopic images projected in a PowerPoint presentation and had to issue their response through a digital questionnaire. Concordance of intra and interobserver responses was evaluated. Results: a high level of global agreement was found with a kappa 0.66 CI 95% (0.63-0.70) p<0.0000, also in other groups such as rheumatologists in training: kappa 0.65 CI 95% (0.60-0.71) p=0.0000, physicians rheumatologists: kappa 0.67 95% CI (0.62-0.72) p=0.0000. Conclusions: the level of agreement found was globally high, regardless of the level of training of the professionals, and whether or not they were a rheumatologist. Concordance was higher when compared to those who had more than 4 years of experience performing videocapillaroscopy.

Abstract Phosphorus (P) deficiency has been identified as one of the main abiotic stresses that limits soybean productivity under tropical conditions - the objective of the research was to evaluate the efficiency of P utilization of 25 soybean cultivars [Glycine max (L. ) Merrill.] Cultivated in a sandy soil of the Brazilian Cerrado. Responsive and efficient soybean genotypes in terms of P utilization were classified by the method of Fageria and Kluthcouski (1980) and the hierarchical method of clustering of minimum variance of Ward to discriminate similar groups. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design in a 2 × 25 factorial design with four replications. The treatments consisted of two levels of P availability in the soil [low availability (20 mg kg-1) and high availability (200 mg kg-1)] and 25 soybean cultivars where the height of insertion of the first pod was evaluated. , number of pods per plant, number of grains per pod, mass of 1000 grains and grain yield. With the results of grain production, the efficiency of response to phosphate fertilization was calculated for the determination of a new grouping technique according to the similarity between genotypes.

Resumo A deficiência de fósforo (P) tem sido apontada com um dos principais estresses abióticos que limita a produtividade da soja em condições tropicais- o objetivo da pesquisa foi de avaliar a eficiência de utilização do P de 25 cultivares de soja [Glycine max (L.) Merrill.] Cultivadas em um solo arenoso do Cerrado brasileiro. Os genótipos de soja responsivos e eficientes quanto à utilização de P foram classificados pelo método de Fageria e Kluthcouski (1980) e o método hierárquico de agrupamento de variância mínima de Ward para discriminar grupos similares. O experimento foi conduzido no delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 2 × 25 com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos por dois níveis de disponibilidade de P no solo [baixa disponibilidade (20 mg kg-1) e alta disponibilidade (200 mg kg-1)] e por 25 cultivares de soja onde foram avaliados a altura de inserção da primeira vagem, número de vagens por planta, número de grãos por vagem, massa de 1000 grãos e produção de grãos. Com os resultados de produção de grãos foi calculada a eficiência de resposta à adubação fosfatada para a determinação de uma nova técnica de agrupação segundo a similaridade entre genótipos.

RESUMO O uso da temperatura como traçador natural em hidrologia é observado desde a década de 1960. Nos últimos anos, foi possível observar um resgate do uso desta propriedade física na investigação do ciclo da água. As principais razões são a redução de custos na medição de temperatura e o desenvolvimento da medição de temperatura distribuída. A partir deste contexto, este trabalho apresenta um estudo da interação rio-aquífero, na Bacia do Ribeirão da Onça (afloramento do Sistema Aquífero Guarani), a partir do uso de dados de vazão do curso principal e utilizando a temperatura como traçador natural. Duas calhas Parshall foram instaladas a uma distância de 1,2 km entre si, de forma a quantificar a vazão do curso principal e determinar a contribuição de água subterrânea. Um cabo de fibra ótica foi empregado para identificar regiões de contribuição da água subterrânea ao curso superficial, assim como uma sonda de temperatura, com termistores, foi utilizada para medir o gradiente de temperatura vertical e estimar as taxas de troca entre estes meios. Os resultados indicam uma diferença de vazão de ~250 m3.h-1 entre as calhas, o que pode ser interpretado como contribuição do fluxo de base ao rio. O sistema de medição distribuído de temperatura (DTS) permitiu a identificação de regiões de contribuição de água subterrânea, em virtude da diferença de temperatura entre água subterrânea e superficial. Taxas de descarga de 200 a 300 mm.dia-1 foram obtidas a partir das medições pontuais de temperatura, que concordam com os valores obtidos a partir da medição de vazão. O trabalho demonstra que a temperatura pode ser utilizada como um traçador natural, mesmo em áreas tropicais, em que a temperatura da água subterrânea é superior à da água superficial, especialmente nos períodos de inverno.

ABSTRACT The use of temperature as a natural tracer in hydrology is noticed since the 1960s. In recent years, there has been a revival of the use of this physical property in the investigation of water cycle. The main reasons are the cost reduction of temperature measurements and the development of distributed temperature sensing. Here, we present a study of the groundwater-surface water interaction in the Onça Creek Watershed (Guarani Aquifer System outcrop) using stream discharge data and temperature as a natural tracer. Two Parshall flumes were installed 1.2 km apart to quantify stream discharge and determine groundwater contribution. We used an optic fiber cable to identify interaction locations and a probe with thermistors to measure the vertical temperature gradient and estimate flux rates. The results show a discharge difference of ~250 m3.h-1 between both flumes, which we interpret as baseflow contribution. The distributed temperature sensing allowed the identification of regions with gaining behavior. Discharge rates between 200 and 300 mm.day-1 were determined from vertical temperature measurements, which agrees with the streamflow data. The study demonstrated that temperature is attractive as natural tracer in tropical conditions, where the groundwater temperature is higher than the surface water temperature, especially during the winter.

Resumo O objetivo do presente estudo foi realizar a avaliação morfológica das fibras da madeira de imbuia (Ocotea porosa) ao longo das camadas de crescimento de uma árvore multissecular. A amostra utilizada foi resgatada em 2018 de um corte ilegal e doada à UFSC pela Polícia Militar Ambiental de Santa Catarina. Foi retirado um disco a 2,3 m de altura, sendo medida a série completa de crescimento da medula à casca. A amostra foi datada com outras árvores vivas nos seus primeiros 91 anos por pesquisadores colaboradores que concluíram que esta apresenta 533 anos em um raio de 95 cm. A partir disso, retirouse uma bagueta radial do disco, que foi marcada em porções a cada 10% no sentido medula-casca (0% = próximo à medula, 100% = próximo à casca), totalizando 11 posições. Cada uma dessas porções foi submetida ao processo de maceração, visando à individualização das fibras para mensuração das dimensões de comprimento, largura, diâmetro do lúmen e espessura da parede celular, bem como dos indicadores anatômicos de fração parede, coeficiente de flexibilidade, índice de enfeltramento e índice de Runkel. A árvore apresentou um ritmo de crescimento oscilante ao longo de sua vida, o que se constatou pelos diferentes números de anéis nas porções radiais amostradas, indicando períodos de crescimento mais lento e outros mais acelerados. As dimensões das fibras e os indicadores anatômicos variaram de forma significativa no sentido radial (medula-casca), com exceção do diâmetro do lúmen e do índice de enfeltramento. Estudos com árvores centenárias ou multisseculares são raros, assim, tais avaliações possibilitam conhecer um pouco mais sobre uma das espécies mais relevantes do sul do Brasil.

Abstract The objective of the present study was to execute the morphological evaluation of the fibers of the imbuia wood (Ocotea porosa), along the growth layers of an ancient imbuia tree. The sample used was rescued in 2018 from an illegal cut and donated to UFSC by the Environmental Military Police of Santa Catarina state. A disc was removed at a height of 2.3 m, and the complete series of growth from pitch to bark was measured. The sample was dated with other living trees in its first 91 years by the collaborating researchers, they concluded that the sample had 533 years old in a 95 cm of ray. From this, a radial shape of the disc was removed, which was marked in portions every 10% in the pitch-bark direction (0% = close to the pitch, 100% = close to the bark), totaling 11 positions. Each sample was submitted to maceration process, aiming the individualization of the fibers to measure the dimensions of length, width, lumen diameter and wall thickness, as well as the anatomical indicators of wall fraction, flexibility coefficient, felting index and Runkel index. The tree showed an oscillating growth rate throughout its life, which was evidenced by the different number of rings in the sampled radial portions, indicating slower growth periods and others accelerated. The dimensions of the fibers and the anatomical indicators varied significantly in the radial direction (pitch-bark), with the exception of the lumen diameter and the felting index. Studies with ancient or old trees are rare, so such evaluations make it possible to know a little more about one of the most relevant species in southern Brazil.

ABSTRACT Background: Andersen-Tawil syndrome (ATS) is a cardiac channelopathy that is inherited in an autosomal dominant way, and it is characterized by a triad of periodic paralysis, ventricular arrhythmias, and includes some dysmorphic features with incomplete penetrance and variable expression that result in a challenging diagnosis. Objective: The objective of the study was to describe the cardiac and extra-cardiac phenotype in a cohort of patients with ATS at risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) to improve its early clinical identification. Methods: In an observational, transversal study, with a deviant case sampling, four female patients with ATS at high risk of SCD were included in the study. They carried the heterozygous pathogenic variants c.407C>T [p.Ser136Phe], c.652C>T [p.Arg218Trp] (n=2), and c.431G>C [p.Gly144Ala] in the KCNJ2 gene. Patients were evaluated by a cardiologist, a clinical geneticist, and a physiatrist. Results: One patient had the classical facial phenotype and the other three had subtle manifestations. The group of patients presented a diverse set of clinical data such as: triangular face, broad forehead, broadening of medial eyebrows, auricular pits, low-set ears, eyelid ptosis, thin lips, mandibular hypoplasia, and diverse types of dental alterations, single transverse palmar crease, camptodactyly, and syndactyly. Long-exercise test showed a decrement in the percentage amplitude up to 44%, classifying patients in IV or V types according to Fournier’s scale. Conclusions: Extra-cardiac manifestations were a common finding in this series of ATS type1 at high risk of SCD. Its recognition could help the clinician in the early identification of patients with ATS, especially for the cardiologist since they are commonly referred only for evaluation of ventricular arrhythmias.

Abstract: Introduction: Percutaneous tracheostomy is considered to be the gold standard technique for performing tracheostomy in most countries, it is an easy to learn technique and has a minimum of complications, however it is not widely used in Mexico. Objectives: To compare the percutaneous (TPC) and conventional tracheostomy (TC) techniques in a general hospital in Mexico. Material and methods: We performed a retrospective review study of the clinical records of all the patients that underwent a tracheostomy procedur between 1998 and 2014 in a single general hospital in Mexico. All tracheostomy procedures, with both precutaneous and conventional techniques, performed in adults, both female and male, were included. Surgical outcome, mechanical ventilation and hospital stay, were compared between both groups. Results: A hundred and forty patients were included, 94 with TPC and 46 with TC, 56.4 vs 58.7%, respectively. Average age was 64 ± 17 (age ± standard error of mean) and 59 ± 17 years, respectively (p=0.077). Average procedure time was inferior with percutaneous technique, 28 ± 5 vs 48 ± 12 minutes, respectively. Complications with the TPC technique were 19.6%, versus 17% with the TC group (p = 0.815). Hospital stay in the TPC group was 31 ± 5 (mean ± mean standard error), compared to 39 ± 5 days for TC technique (p = 0.038). ICU stay after tracheostomy for the TPC group was 16 ± 5 and 13 ± 3 in the TC technique (p = 0.038). ICU discharge within 30 days after tracheostomy was 94.7% in the TPC group against 82.6% in the TC group (p = 0.030). Conclusions: There is no difference regarding procedural complications between percutaneous tracheostomy technique and conventional tracheostomy, yet, TPC is an accesible, easy to learn and fast technique that holds several advantages; the differences between both techinques in terms of ICU, mechanical ventilation and hospital stay can be attributed to differences related to the different pathologies between both groups.

Resumen: Introducción: La traqueostomía por técnica percutánea es una técnica de fácil realización, mínimas complicaciones y el estándar de oro en la mayoría de los países; sin embargo, en México aún no se utiliza de una manera amplia. Objetivos: Comparar la técnica percutánea y convencional de traqueostomía en un hospital general de la Ciudad de México. Material y métodos: Estudio retrospectivo mediante la revisión de expedientes clínicos de pacientes adultos, de ambos sexos, sometidos a traqueostomía por técnica percutánea y convencional entre los años 1998 y 2014 en un solo centro hospitalario. Se compararon ambas técnicas en cuanto a tiempo de procedimiento, desenlace quirúrgico, complicaciones, ventilación mecánica y hospitalización. Resultados: Se incluyeron 140 pacientes, 94 con técnica percutánea y 46 convencional, de los cuales 56.4 y 58.7%, respectivamente, el promedio de edad fue de 64 ± 17 (media ± error estándar de la media; M ± EEM) y 59 ± 17 años, respectivamente (p = 0.077); el tiempo promedio de procedimiento fue menor con la técnica de traqueostomía percutánea (TPC), 28 ± 5 (M ± DE) contra 48 ± 12 minutos, respectivamente; de las complicaciones presentadas 19.6% fueron en la técnica convencional (TC) contra 17% en la percutánea (TPC) (p = 0.815). La media de días de estancia hospitalaria fue 31 ± 5 (M ± EEM) del grupo TC contra 39 ± 5 del grupo TPC (p = 0.038); la estancia en unidad de cuidados intensivos (UCI) posterior a traqueostomía fue de 13 ± 3 del grupo TC contra 16 ± 5 del grupo de TPC (p = 0.038). El porcentaje de altas de UCI en los primeros 30 días posterior a la traqueostomía fue de 94.7% en el grupo TPC contra 82.6% en el grupo TC (p = 0.030). Conclusiones: La TPC presenta complicaciones similares a las de la TC; sin embargo, es una técnica que se puede realizar en la cama del paciente en la UCI sin necesidad de uso de quirófano, de forma segura y rápida. Encontramos diferencias entre ambas técnicas en favor de la TPC en términos de estancia hospitalaria y alta de UCI en los primeros 30 días después de la traqueostomía; no obstante, no podemos descartar que esto sea atribuible a las patologías de base de cada paciente.

Abstract Cardiac resynchronization therapy has proven to be an effective therapy in patients with left bundle branch block and heart failure. Male, 47 years old, heart failure with a left ventricle ejection fraction of 17%, idiopathic heart failure. ECG with sinus rhythm, 1st degree AV block, PR 400 ms, complete right bundle branch block, anterior hemi-fascicle of the left bundle of His, and QRS duration 200 ms. We decided to perform a selective His bundle pacing. In patients with right bundle branch block the biventricular cardiac resynchronization is not indicated due to low treatment response. His bundle pacing allows recruiting the blocked branch and restoring conduction throughout it, therefore, in the absence of necrosis the biventricular synchrony is achieved. We presented a case of His bundle pacing with recruitment of the right bundle branch, which reestablish biventricular synchrony measured by speckle tracking, and with a significant increase of the left ventricle ejection fraction from 17 to 36.6%, with an absolute increase of 19.6%.

Resumen La terapia de resincronización cardiaca mediante estimulación hisiana ha demostrado ser efectiva en pacientes con bloqueo de rama izquierda del haz de His e insuficiencia cardiaca. Paciente masculino, con 47 años de edad, con insuficiencia cardiaca, fracción de expulsión del 17% y miocardio dilatada idiopática, electrocardiograma en ritmo sinusal, bloqueo auriculoventricular de 1.er grado, intervalo PR 400 ms, bloqueo completo de rama derecha del haz de His, bloqueo del fascículo anterior de la rama izquierda del haz de His, duración del QRS 200 ms. Se decidió realizar estimulación selectiva del haz de His. La resincronización cardiaca biventricular convencional en pacientes con presencia de bloqueo completo de la rama derecha del haz de His no está indicada debido a la pobre respuesta al tratamiento. La estimulación hisiana permite reclutar la rama bloqueada y reestablecer la conducción a través de ella, de tal forma que, en ausencia de necrosis, se logre sincronía biventricular. En el caso presentado el reclutamiento de la rama derecha mediante estimulación hisiana se reflejó en el restablecimiento de la sincronía biventricular, medida por rastreo de marcas (speckle tracking) e incremento significativo de la fracción de expulsión del ventrículo izquierdo del 17 al 36.6%, con un incremento absoluto del 19.6%.

Abstract The study and measurement of moral personality in university students is considered important to understand essential elements of the ethical aspects that define the training of future professionals. However, in Mexico and Latin America, suggestions have been made in this regard, but the development of instruments that allow evaluating this type of training with quantitative criteria has not been deepened. In this research, we aimed to validate a scale of moral personality in Mexican university students and identify the relationships between moral personality and the big five personality traits. It began with a scale of 36 items originally written in Catalan and addressed to Catalan university students. The items were translated into Spanish and applied to a sample of Mexican university students. The psychometric properties were evaluated to select the items with the best results, followed by an exploratory factor analysis, a confirmatory factor analysis and a Pearson correlation analysis with the big five personality traits as a convergent validity process. The results showed that, although there were marginally acceptable results, various criteria are presented to consider the moral personality scale for Mexican university students as a valid and reliable scale with the three factors raised in the original model and statistically significant correlations with the five big factors. The importance of personality and moral aspects in university education is discussed from an integral point of view in which not only academic aspects are considered, but also aspects of everyday life in general. Suggestions are also made to continue developing evaluation instruments that measure moral aspects of psychology, in such a way that its impact on the behavior of Mexicans can be corroborated with precise evidence, not only at their university level, but also in different areas in those that develop interpersonal relationships where norms, beliefs or values are expressed with codes of behavior based on the distinction between good and evil.

Resumen El estudio y medición de la personalidad moral en estudiantes universitarios se considera importante para comprender elementos esenciales de los aspectos éticos que definen la formación de los futuros profesionales. Sin embargo, en México y América Latina se han hecho sugerencias al respecto, pero no se ha profundizado en el desarrollo de instrumentos que permitan evaluar este tipo de formación con criterios cuantitativos. En esta investigación, se plantearon los objetivos de identificar las propiedades psicométricas de una escala de personalidad moral en estudiantes universitarios mexicanos, además de reconocer las relaciones entre personalidad moral y los cinco grandes factores de la personalidad. Se tradujeron al español los reactivos de la escala original redactada en catalán y se aplicaron a diferentes muestras de la cultura mexicana. Los resultados mostraron una escala válida y confiable con los tres factores planteados en el modelo original y correlaciones estadísticamente significativas con los cinco grandes factores. Se discute la importancia de la personalidad y los aspectos morales en la formación universitaria desde un punto de vista integral, en el que no sólo se consideren los aspectos académicos, sino también aspectos la vida cotidiana en general.

Abstract Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is one of the major causes of heart failure and mortality. Glucocorticoids administration post-infarction has long been proposed, but it has shown conflicting results so far. This controversy may be associated with the glucocorticoid type and the period when it is administered. To elucidate these, the present aims to evaluate if the brief methylprednisolone acetate administration is determinant for heart adaptation after AMI. Male Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups: sham-operated (SHAM); infarcted (AMI); infarcted treated with methylprednisolone acetate (AMI+M). Immediately after surgery, the AMI+M group received a single dose of methylprednisolone acetate (40 mg/kg i.m.). After 56 days, the cardiac function was assessed and lungs, liver and heart were collected to determine rates of hypertrophy and congestion. Heart was used for oxidative stress and metalloproteinase activity analyses. Methylprednisolone acetate attenuated matrix metalloproteinase-2 activity, cardiac dilatation, and prevented the onset of pulmonary congestion, as well as avoided cardiac hypertrophy. Our data indicate that administration of methylprednisolone acetate shortly after AMI may be a therapeutic alternative for attenuation of detrimental ventricular remodeling.

OBJECTIVES: In this ancillary analysis of a multicenter, double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, we investigated the effect of a single high dose of vitamin D3 on the length of hospital stay of patients with severe 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency and COVID-19. METHODS: The primary outcome was length of hospital stay, defined as the total number of days that patients remained hospitalized from the date of randomization until the date of hospital discharge. Secondary outcomes included serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, mortality during hospitalization, number of patients admitted to the intensive care unit, and number of patients who required mechanical ventilation. ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT04449718. RESULTS: Thirty-two patients were included in the study. The mean (SD) age was 58.5 (15.6) years, body mass index was 30.8 (8.6) kg/m2, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D level was 7.8 (1.6) ng/mL. No significant difference was observed in the median interquartile range of length of hospital stay between the vitamin D3 group (6.0 [4.0-18.0] days) versus placebo (9.5 [6.3-15.5] days) (log-rank p=0.74; hazard ratio, 1.13 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.53-2.40]; p=0.76). Vitamin D3 significantly increased serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in the vitamin D3 group compared with that in the placebo group (between-group difference, 23.9 ng/mL [95% CI, 17.7-30.1]; p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: A dose of 200.000 IU of vitamin D3 did not significantly reduce the length of hospital stay of patients with severe 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency and COVID-19.

ABSTRACT Thermally modified wood undergoes chemical, physical, and mechanical modifications, resulting in changes in resistance to wood biodegrading agents. The objective of this study was to evaluate the resistance to biodeterioration of thermally modified wood by the industrial process VAP HolzSysteme® of Eucalyptus grandis, Pinus taeda and Tectona grandis, submitted to the Lentinula edodes fungi (brown rot) and Pleurotus djamor fungi (white rot), and to analyze the chemical properties, contents of holocellulose, lignin, total extracts, and ash, before and after biodeterioration. Three treatments were considered for each species: Control - wood in natura, modified wood at 140 °C and 160 °C. The specimens were made according to ASTM D 1413 (ASTM, 1994), in a total of 108 samples per species, 36 per treatment for each species, with 12 samples submitted to the fungus L. edodes, 12 to P. djamor and 12 correction blocks. Different behaviors occurred among species under fungal action. For E. grandis wood the thermal modification increased the resistance to biodeterioration of the wood under the action of the L. edodes fungus, in the opposite way occurred for the species P. taeda. There was little variation between treatments in T. grandis wood for both fungi. Thermal modification conferred chemical alterations on the wood, influencing their behavior the biodeterioration by the fungal action in P. taeda species in a negative way, (increasing the degradation level), and E. grandis in a positive way, reducing the biodeterioration. However, in T. grandis species no significant differences were identified in the different treatments by the action of different rotting fungi.
