ABSTRACT Immunocompromised individuals were considered high-risk for severe disease due to SARS COV-2 infection. This study aimed to describe the safety of two doses of COVID-19 adsorbed inactivated vaccine (CoronaVac; Sinovac/Butantan), followed by additional doses of mRNA BNT162b2 (Pfizer/BioNTech) in immunocompromised (IC) adults, compared to immunocompetent/healthy (H) individuals. This phase 4, multicenter, open label study included solid organ transplant and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients, cancer patients and people with inborn errors of immunity with defects in antibody production, rheumatic, end-stage chronic kidney or liver disease, who were enrolled in the IC group. Participants received two doses of CoronaVac and additional doses of mRNA BNT162b2. Adverse reactions (AR) data were collected within seven days after each vaccination. Serious adverse events and of special interest (AESI) were monitored throughout the study. We included 241 immunocompromised and 100 immunocompetent subjects. Arthralgia, fatigue, myalgia, and nausea were more frequent in the IC group after CoronaVac. Following the first additional dose of mRNA BNT162, pain, induration, and tenderness at injection site, fatigue and myalgia were more frequent in the H group. A heart transplant recipient had a graft rejection temporally associated with the second CoronaVac dose, but there was no literature evidence of causal association. Four cases of AESI were considered related to the vaccine: three erythema multiforme after CoronaVac, all in IC participants, and one paresthesia after mRNA, in a H participant. Our findings were comparable to other studies that evaluated the safety of COVID-19 vaccines in different immunocompromised populations. Both vaccines were safe for immunocompromised participants.

ABSTRACT Purpose to describe sociodemographic characteristics of individuals with multiple sclerosis and correlate and compare vocal fatigue, voice handicap, and voice-related quality of life of individuals with and without the disease. Methods Cross-sectional, quantitative study with 52 volunteers with multiple sclerosis and 52 control volunteers, matched by sex, age, and education level. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected through a questionnaire and medical record analysis. Participants responded to the reduced Voice Handicap Index (VHI-10), Vocal Fatigue Index (VFI), and Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL). Correlational and comparative analyses were performed, with a 5% significance level (p < 0.05). Results There was a greater predominance of females diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, with a mean age of 40 years, who graduated from high school, and with a relapsing-remitting disease course. Voice handicap was positively correlated with vocal fatigue, and voice handicap and vocal fatigue were negatively correlated with voice-related quality of life in both groups. Participants with multiple sclerosis exceeded the VHI-10 and VFI cutoff scores and were below the V-RQOL cutoff score. Conclusion There was a prevalence of the disease in young, educated females with relapsing-remitting disease. The greater the voice handicap and/or vocal fatigue, the lower the voice-related quality of life in both groups. However, people with multiple sclerosis self-reported greater voice handicap and vocal fatigue and poorer voice-related quality of life.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To describe the ophthalmological findings of dry eye disease and its relation to the quality of life of COVID-19 survivors. Methods: COVID-19 survivors who had previously been hospitalized at Hospital das Clínicas de Ribeirão Preto complex underwent an ophthalmological evaluation, which included a dry eye disease questionnaire, break-up time, fluorescein staining, and Schirmer test. We collected the presenting and best-corrected visual acuity, sociodemographic data, personal medical history, and scores from a self-reported quality of life questionnaire (WHOQOL-bref). According to the severity of the acute phase of the disease, the patients were classified into mild-to-moderate, severe, and critical groups. Results: Ninety-five patients (190 eyes) were evaluated 100 ± 44 days after the onset of COVID-19 symptoms. Of these, 83 patients (87.3%) completed the WHOQOL-bref questionnaire. Ten patients (12.0%) had mild-to-moderate COVID-19, 41 (49.4%) had severe COVID-19, and 32 (38.6%) had critical COVID-19. The median best-corrected visual acuity was logMAR 0 (0-1). Approximately 26.3% patients had a history of dry eye disease or severe dry eye symptoms (frequent or constant ocular dryness and irritation). There was an association between the proportion of patients with dry eye disease and the quality of life (p=0.014) and health (p=0.001). Furthermore, there was a significant trend between the proportion of patients with dry eye disease and how they rated their health and quality of life (p=0.0004 and 0.0027, respectively. Conclusions: There is a significant negative correlation between the proportion of patients with dry eye disease and their self-reported quality of life. Abstract Objective: To study the association between placental efficiency with anthropometry and nutritional phenotypes in full-term newborns from a birth cohort. Method: This was a secondary cross-sectional analysis of data obtained in a cohort study (Brazilian RibeirãoPreto and São Luís Birth Cohort Studies - BRISA), whose deliveries were performed between 2010 and 2011. Standardized questionnaires were applied to mothers, and placentas and newborns were evaluated shortly after delivery. Placental efficiency was assessed using the ratio between birth weight and placental weight (BW/PW ratio); values below the lower quartile (25th percentile for gestational age) were considered to have low placental efficiency. Newborn phenotypes were small and large for gestational age, stunted and wasted, evaluated using the INTERGROWTH-21 growth standard. To identify the confounding variables theoretical model was constructed using Directed Acyclic Graphs, and unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression were performed. Placental measurements were obtained blindly from pregnancy and delivery data. Results: 723 mother-placenta-child triads were studied. 3.2 % of newborns were small-for-gestational-age (SGA), 6.5 %large-for-gestational-age (LGA), 5.7 %had stunting, and 0.27 % wasting. A significantly higher risk was found between low placental efficiency and SGA (OR 2.82;95 % CI 1.05-7.57), stunting (OR 2.23; 95 % CI 1.07-4.65), and wasting (OR 8.22; 95 % CI 1.96-34.37). No relationship was found between LGA and placental efficiency. Conclusions: Low placental efficiency was associated with increased risk for small-for-gestational-age, stunting, and wasting. Placental morphometry can provide valuable information on intrauterine conditions and neonatal health, helping to identify newborns at higher risk of future comorbidities.
Abstract To reduce the spread of the coronavirus, isolation/social distancing measures were adopted, such as closing schools and adopting remote learning. In this scenario, there were consequences to the children’s routine, such as increased screen time and exposure to electronic media (EM). The objective was to verify whether exposure to different EM changes the chances of emotional/clinical behavioral problems among children (7-11 years) during the Covid-19 pandemic, from the perspective of those guardians. A total of 277 respondents filled out the sociodemographic questionnaire, Media Activity Form - Parent Report (MAF-P) and Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL/6-18), between June 10th and August 10th, 2020. Multivariate logistic regressions were performed with each scale of emotional/behavioral problems as the outcome, and the total number of hours in each EM was used as a predictor. More time on social media, creating content online, in texting and calling apps, and for school purposes increased the odds in clinical scores for somatic and conduct problems. Longer time watching videos on communication channels and accessing entertainment/information sites decreased the chances of clinical scores on behavioral/emotional problems. One should think about whether the post-pandemic and face-to-face return to activities will modify the relationship between the time of use and the chances of problems at the clinical level. In addition, one should think about how EM is used by children, its functions and the content used, to develop strategies for use in this age group and parental management for such exposure.

Abstract Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical-epidemiological profile, associated risk factors and clinical outcomes of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), identifying the main causes of morbidity and mortality and overall survival rate of patients at five years of follow-up. Method This was a retrospective cohort study evaluating the prognosis and clinical outcomes of 222 patients diagnosed with AML at three large hematology centers in Ceará (northeastern Brazil) over a period of five years. Results The mean age at diagnosis was 44.1 ± 16 years, with a female prevalence of 1.3:1. No additional relevant risk factors associated with the development of AML were found, except for the well-established cytogenetic assessment. The overall 5-year survival rate was 39.4% (95%CI: 35.47 - 42.17). The main causes of death were disease progression (37.72%; n = 84) and sepsis (31.58%; n = 70). Conclusion The clinical outcomes in our sample of AML patients were similar to those of other reported groups. Disease progression and infection were the main causes of death. Access to diagnostic flow cytometry and karyotyping was greater in our sample than in the national average. As expected, overall survival differed significantly according to the risk, as determined by cytogenetic testing. clinicalepidemiological epidemiological profile AML, , (AML) followup. followup follow up. up follow-up 22 northeastern Brazil 441 44 1 44. 1.31. 131 1.3 1. 3 1.3:1 found wellestablished well established assessment 5year year 5 394 39 4 39.4 95%CI 95CI CI 95 (95%CI 3547 35 47 35.4 42.17. 4217 42.17 . 42 17 42.17) 37.72% 3772 37 72 (37.72% 84 31.58% 3158 31 58 (31.58% 70. 70 70) groups average expected testing (AML 2 1.31 13 1.3: 39. 9 354 35. 421 42.1 37.72 377 7 (37.72 8 31.58 315 (31.58 42. 37.7 (37.7 31.5 (31.5 37. Abstract Objective: To analyze the existing state legislation, including not only the ordinary laws, but also their infralegal regulation and the state legislation on Hospital Dentistry. Material and Methods: A survey was carried out in the databases of the Legislative Assemblies of the Brazilian States and the Federal District, as well as the Regional and Federal Councils of Dentistry in Brazil. Subsequently, a survey was carried out in the databases of the Ministry of Health, State Dental Councils and Federal Dental Council in Brazil. Results: Only 8 Brazilian states have legislation in force regarding hospital dentistry, which represents 29.63% of the federative units. Among the Brazilian regions, the Midwest presented the highest prevalence of the laws found (37.50%), followed by the North (25%) and the other regions with the same coverage (12.50%). Also, an orientation and an ordinance from the Ministry of Health, six resolutions from the Federal Council of Dentistry, and a technical note from the National Health Surveillance Agency were found. Conclusion: Several States do not have rules on the subject, making it imperative to create a federal rule that not only imposes the presence of the dentist, but also regulates the proportion of the team, workload, and availability.

ABSTRACT Objective To investigate excess mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic and its spatial distribution in Pernambuco, Brazil. Methods This was an ecological, descriptive and analytical study of deaths, by municipality, recorded on the Mortality Information System, in 2020 and 2021. Excess mortality was measured by comparing observed and expected deaths, the latter estimated by calculating standardized mortality ratio (SMR). SMR and respective confidence intervals (95%CI) were calculated. Spatial analysis was performed by calculating the Global and Local Moran Index. Results Excess mortality was 20.6% and 27.5%, respectively, in 2020 and 2021, with positive spatial correlation (p-value < 0.05). More populous municipalities (2020: SMR = 1.26; 95%CI 1.24;1.27 and 2021: SMR = 1.34; 95%CI 1.32;1.34), more developed municipalities (2020: SMR = 1.43; 95%CI 1.41;1.44 and 2021: SMR = 1.51;95%CI 1.50;1.53) and municipalities in the Sertão region (2020:SMR = 1.31;95%CI 1.30;1.33 and 2021: SMR = 1.44; 95%CI 1.42;1.46) showed greater excess deaths. Conclusion Excess mortality coincided with peak periods of COVID-19 transmission.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study investigated the acute effects of cocoa flavanol (CF) supplementation on glucose homeostasis, aerobic performance, and lactate concentration in rats with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and normoglycemia (NORM). Materials and methods: The study included 28 male Wistar rats (220-290 g). Induction of T1DM (n = 8) was achieved through intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin, while T2DM (n = 10) was induced using an ad libitum high-fat diet combined with a fructose-rich beverage. The rats in the NORM group (n = 10) received a standard diet for 30 days. Two experiments were conducted: (1) T1DM rats performed two successive 30-minute treadmill runs below the anaerobic threshold and (2) T2DM and NORM rats underwent two incremental maximal treadmill running tests, both after CF or placebo supplementation. Blood glucose concentrations were measured from pre-exercise to 60 minutes post-exercise. Results: Glycemic reduction at 60 minutes post-exercise was significantly potentiated by CF compared with placebo supplementation in T1DM, T2DM, and normoglycemic rats (p < 0.05 for all). In T2DM rats, CF induced a glycemic response comparable to the NORM placebo-supplemented condition. These effects of CF persisted despite variations in aerobic performance or lactate concentration after incremental exercise. Conclusion: Supplementation with CF prior to physical exercise elicited a pronounced post-aerobic exercise glycemic reduction. This represents a promising strategy for mitigating the duration of hyperglycemia exposure after physical exercise. Objective (CF homeostasis TDM , T DM (T1DM) (T2DM) NORM. . ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the influence of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on the bond strength of adhesive restorative materials to healthy and caries-affected dentin. Material and Methods: 04 electronic databases and 02 additional searches were assessed. In vitro studies considering sound or caries-affected human or bovine dentin (population), use of aPDT before restorative treatment (intervention), use of other dentin disinfection techniques (comparison), and bond strength to dentin (outcome) were included. The risk of bias for in vitro studies was used as a method to check the evidence. The method used to present and synthesize results was data extraction. Results: The total number of included studies was 11, including 550 permanent teeth. Bond strength was evaluated mainly through the shear bond strength (SBS) test, with dentin affected by caries being the substrate most frequently used in studies. Six studies demonstrated that aPDT with methylene blue (MB) negatively affected the SBS values of resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) to dentin. Regarding risk of bias assessment, all studies were at high risk of bias. Conclusion: The effects of aPDT on adhesion to dentin vary depending on the type of substrate and the photosensitizer used. Mainly, MB negatively affected the SBS values from RMGIC to dentin. The conclusion should be interpreted considering the high risk of bias in the studies. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82.
Abstract Although developed in biology to comprehend how organisms evolve, life history theory (LHT) has come to be applied in psychology to understand individual differences in development in response to specific environmental conditions. Due to its heuristic potential for understanding human behavior, this work aimed to describe the assimilation of LHT by psychology, presenting its theoretical and conceptual foundations in this new field, such as the fast-slow continuum, the covariation among psychological traits, and the life history strategies. We discuss, based on empirical works, the theory’s predictions about the influence of environmental unpredictability and harshness on psychological traits. We review studies in the field of development, sexual and antisocial behavior, personality, and psychopathology. Criticisms and counter-criticisms of its use in psychology are also presented. Finally, we list some of the limitations of LHT studies in psychology. We argue that studies in this area can contribute to the development of solutions to current social problems. evolve (LHT conditions behavior fastslow fast slow continuum traits strategies discuss works theorys s personality psychopathology countercriticisms counter criticisms presented Finally problems
