ABSTRACT Immunocompromised individuals were considered high-risk for severe disease due to SARS COV-2 infection. This study aimed to describe the safety of two doses of COVID-19 adsorbed inactivated vaccine (CoronaVac; Sinovac/Butantan), followed by additional doses of mRNA BNT162b2 (Pfizer/BioNTech) in immunocompromised (IC) adults, compared to immunocompetent/healthy (H) individuals. This phase 4, multicenter, open label study included solid organ transplant and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients, cancer patients and people with inborn errors of immunity with defects in antibody production, rheumatic, end-stage chronic kidney or liver disease, who were enrolled in the IC group. Participants received two doses of CoronaVac and additional doses of mRNA BNT162b2. Adverse reactions (AR) data were collected within seven days after each vaccination. Serious adverse events and of special interest (AESI) were monitored throughout the study. We included 241 immunocompromised and 100 immunocompetent subjects. Arthralgia, fatigue, myalgia, and nausea were more frequent in the IC group after CoronaVac. Following the first additional dose of mRNA BNT162, pain, induration, and tenderness at injection site, fatigue and myalgia were more frequent in the H group. A heart transplant recipient had a graft rejection temporally associated with the second CoronaVac dose, but there was no literature evidence of causal association. Four cases of AESI were considered related to the vaccine: three erythema multiforme after CoronaVac, all in IC participants, and one paresthesia after mRNA, in a H participant. Our findings were comparable to other studies that evaluated the safety of COVID-19 vaccines in different immunocompromised populations. Both vaccines were safe for immunocompromised participants.

ABSTRACT Mechanical ventilation can be a life-saving intervention, but its implementation requires a multidisciplinary approach, with an understanding of its indications and contraindications due to the potential for complications. The management of mechanical ventilation should be part of the curricula during clinical training; however, trainees and practicing professionals frequently report low confidence in managing mechanical ventilation, often seeking additional sources of knowledge. Review articles, consensus statements and clinical practice guidelines have become important sources of guidance in mechanical ventilation, and although clinical practice guidelines offer rigorously developed recommendations, they take a long time to develop and can address only a limited number of clinical questions. The Associação de Medicina Intensiva Brasileira and the Sociedade Brasileira de Pneumologia e Tisiologia sponsored the development of a joint statement addressing all aspects of mechanical ventilation, which was divided into 38 topics. Seventy-five experts from all regions of Brazil worked in pairs to perform scoping reviews, searching for publications on their specific topic of mechanical ventilation in the last 20 years in the highest impact factor journals in the areas of intensive care, pulmonology, and anesthesiology. Each pair produced suggestions and considerations on their topics, which were presented to the entire group in a plenary session for modification when necessary and approval. The result was a comprehensive document encompassing all aspects of mechanical ventilation to provide guidance at the bedside. In this article, we report the methodology used to produce the document and highlight the most important suggestions and considerations of the document, which has been made available to the public in Portuguese.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate whether bacterial inoculation improves the fermentative, microbiological, and chemical characteristics of silages of the elephant grass cv. BRS Capiaçu on different regrowth days. The experimental design was completely randomized and set up in a 3x2 factorial arrangement (three regrowth days, with and without inoculant), with four replications. There was a significant interaction between the regrowth days and inoculant on the pH, ammoniacal nitrogen (N-NH3), and effluent losses (EL) of the silages. Inoculation decreased the EL with the advance of regrowth days and increased the dry matter recovery index compared to the silages without inoculant. The population of molds and yeasts decreased when inoculation was adopted to the forage harvested after 85 d. There was a significant interaction between the dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein (NDFap) contents of the silages. Inoculation in the grass harvested after 85 d increased the DM contents of the silage. The highest CP contents were observed in the silages after 85 d. The NDFap contents of the grasses harvested after 110 and 135 d were higher than those of the grass harvested after 85 d. The NDFap contents of the silages without inoculant increased with the harvest age. The BRS Capiaçu forage silage harvested at 110 d demonstrated favorable performance for silage production. However, the influence of inoculant use was low for the characteristics evaluated.

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the relation between food insecurity and basic sanitation and habitability conditions in households according to urban and rural areas in Brazil. This cross-sectional study was based on microdata from the 2017-2018 Brazilian Household Budget Survey. Habitability conditions were analyzed based on water access; sanitary drainage; garbage collection service; presence of river, lake, polluted bays near the home; presence of a slope near the home; and presence of synanthropes. Food insecurity was measured by the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale. The occurrence of the most severe levels in households (moderate/severe food insecurity) was considered as the outcome. Prevalence estimates and odds ratios were generated with 95% confidence intervals on the Stata software. Urban households with higher odds of moderate/severe food insecurity were associated with wells, inadequate garbage disposal, and lack of treated sewage, whereas the greatest vulnerabilities in rural households were related to sewage connected to ditches and the risk of landslides/hills/flooding. Urban and rural Brazilians areas showed heterogeneous basic sanitation and habitability conditions, representing challenges to the guarantee of food and nutritional security.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study investigated the acute effects of cocoa flavanol (CF) supplementation on glucose homeostasis, aerobic performance, and lactate concentration in rats with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and normoglycemia (NORM). Materials and methods: The study included 28 male Wistar rats (220-290 g). Induction of T1DM (n = 8) was achieved through intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin, while T2DM (n = 10) was induced using an ad libitum high-fat diet combined with a fructose-rich beverage. The rats in the NORM group (n = 10) received a standard diet for 30 days. Two experiments were conducted: (1) T1DM rats performed two successive 30-minute treadmill runs below the anaerobic threshold and (2) T2DM and NORM rats underwent two incremental maximal treadmill running tests, both after CF or placebo supplementation. Blood glucose concentrations were measured from pre-exercise to 60 minutes post-exercise. Results: Glycemic reduction at 60 minutes post-exercise was significantly potentiated by CF compared with placebo supplementation in T1DM, T2DM, and normoglycemic rats (p < 0.05 for all). In T2DM rats, CF induced a glycemic response comparable to the NORM placebo-supplemented condition. These effects of CF persisted despite variations in aerobic performance or lactate concentration after incremental exercise. Conclusion: Supplementation with CF prior to physical exercise elicited a pronounced post-aerobic exercise glycemic reduction. This represents a promising strategy for mitigating the duration of hyperglycemia exposure after physical exercise. Objective (CF homeostasis TDM , T DM (T1DM) (T2DM) NORM. . ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. ABSTRACT Soil fertility evaluation is important for adopting conservation management and adequate nutrient supply. The objective of this study was to identify critical levels and soil fertility classes using the boundary line method for rainfed crops (corn, cowpea and sabiá [Mimosa caesalpiniifolia]) in the Brazilian semi-arid region. A database of 226 soil fertility analyses of samples from the 0.00-0.20 m soil layer, and corn, cowpea and sabiá yields from Ceará State was used to generate interpretation classes (at 80 and 95 % of maximum yield). In a scatter plot, soil nutrient concentrations (x-axis) and relative crop yields (y-axis) were correlated, and the border points fitted to a quadratic model. Proposed interpretation classes were classified as very low, low, adequate, high and very high, except for Na+, whose adequate class was considered tolerable. Generated models showed coefficients of determination (R2) for the chemical properties ranging from 0.54 to 0.92. Based on the interpretation classes, the critical level was determined as 6.3 for pH, 10.8 g dm-3 for OM, 20.9 mg dm-3 for P, 81 mg dm-3 for K, 55 mmolc dm-3 for Ca2+, 24 mmolc dm-3 for Mg2+ and 8 mg dm-3 for S-SO42-. Interpretation classes for soils with high-activity clay in the Brazilian semi-arid region were superior to those in the reference literature. Boundary line method established fertility classes and critical levels for soil chemical properties in more than one crop, using the concept of relative yield. supply corn (corn Mimosa caesalpiniifolia caesalpiniifolia] semiarid semi arid 22 0.000.20 000020 0.00 0.20 0 00 20 0.00-0.2 layer at 9 yield . yield) plot xaxis x axis (x-axis yaxis y (y-axis correlated model low Na Na+ tolerable R2 R (R2 054 54 0.5 092 92 0.92 63 6 3 6. pH 108 10 10. dm3 dm dm- OM 209 20. Abstract Ranacephala hogei is a South American freshwater turtle considered one of the 25 most endangered chelonian species in the world. Endemic to the Atlantic Forest hotspot of southeastern Brazil, the conservation status of R. hogei is subject to continuous assessment at various levels. However, the scarcity of data regarding this species, particularly its geographic range, challenges these evaluations. In an effort to address these gaps, we conducted a comprehensive long-term inventory using different methods to study this species. Our efforts resulted in a 144% increase in documented occurrence points, including a new hydrographic basin and protected areas. By combining historical and current records, we have observed the persistence of R. hogei in rural areas, even in locations where its extinction was previously predicted. Consequently, our data significantly contribute to supporting future conservation assessments. 2 world Brazil R levels However range evaluations gaps longterm long term 144 points areas records predicted Consequently assessments 14 1

Abstract The objective was to evaluate the inclusion of increasing levels of DDG on nutrient intake and digestibility and ruminal fermentation in cattle kept on pasture. Five castrated male steers, fitted with a ruminal cannula, weighing 450±50kg, 18 months old, kept on Marandu grass pasture were used; and distributed in a 5x5 Latin square. DDG was included in the supplements in the following proportions: 0, 100, 150, 200 and 300 g/kg DM. The data were analyzed and subjected to analysis of variance, at a significance level of 5%, being evaluated by simple polynomial regression. The total availability of pasture and green matter presented averages of 2.0 Ton/ha and 1.3 Ton/ha, respectively, allowing selectivity by animals. The consumption of pasture (P=0.032), MS (P=0.041), MO (P=0.022), and PB (P=0.035) showed quadratic behavior with the inclusion of DDG in the supplements, where the highest consumption for both corresponded to the supplements with 100 and 200g/kg inclusion. The digestibility of NDF (P=0.001) and OM (P=0.046) also suffered a quadratic effect (P<0.05), noting that at levels above 200g/kg it can be reduced. N-consumed also suffered a quadratic effect (P=0.032) with an increase in the inclusion of 100, 200 and 300g/kg of DDG, being linked to the protein fraction of DDG. The levels of Isovalerate (P=0.0001), AGCR (P=0.004) and CH4 production (P=0.022) decreased linearly, indicating a decrease in the energy levels of the animals. Therefore, levels between 150 and 200g/kg of DDG are recommended in supplements for cattle kept on pasture. steers cannula 45050kg kg 450 50kg 450±50kg 1 old used x 5x square proportions 0 20 30 gkg g DM variance 5 5% regression 2 2.
Abstract The systematic articulation of water resources involves the use of technical and management instruments capable of minimizing environmental impacts with optimization of available capital and constitution of sewage treatment plants (STPs) to seek greater efficiency in the removal of contaminants, including microbiological ones, and enhance the quality of the water to be released into the receiving bodies. In systems where tertiary treatment is present, disinfection methods such as chlorination and UV radiation are commonly used as a final polishing of the effluent, and the monitoring of their effectiveness in disinfection is extremely important to avoid unnecessary expenses. Thus, this research sought to analyze the efficiency of disinfection of effluent samples from an STP of the sanitation system in the municipality of Indaial-SC using ozonation methods and the process combined with UVC-light-emitting diode (LED) radiation, on a bench scale, in batches. The determination of treatment efficiency was carried out by quantifying colony-forming units (CFU), and variables such as pH (5, 7, and 9) and application time (10, 20, and 30 min) formed the configuration of the analysis. The optimal disinfection point was reached within 20 min of the process, regardless of the disinfection method. In 10 min time, whenever the combined application was used, it showed improvement in efficiency at all pHs, most notably in alkaline medium. The application of UV radiation through LED is a recent technology and, therefore, has aroused interest in research worldwide. ABSTRACT Introduction: measuring the severity of traumatic injuries is crucial for predicting clinical outcomes. Whereas the Injury Severity Score (ISS) has limitations in assigning scores to injuries at the same site, the New Injury Severity Score (NISS) corrects for this problem by taking into account the three most severe injuries regardless of the region of the body. This study seeks to comprehend the clinical and epidemiological profile of trauma patients while comparing the effectiveness of scales for predicting mortality. Methods: a descriptive, observational and retrospective study using records of patients who underwent thoracotomy at the Hospital das Clínicas of the Federal University of Triângulo Mineiro between 2000 and 2019. Demographic data, mechanisms of injury, affected organs, length of stay and mortality were analyzed. Injury severity was assessed using the ISS and NISS, and statistical analyses were conducted using MedCalc and SigmaPlot. Results: 101 patients were assessed, on average 29.6 years old, 86.13% of whom were men. The average duration of hospitalization was 10.9 days and the mortality rate was 28.7%. The ROC curve analysis revealed a sensitivity of 68.97%, specificity of 80.56% and area under the curve of 0.837 for the ISS, and 58.62%, 94.44% and 0.855 for the NISS, respectively. The Youden index was 0.49 for the ISS and 0.53 for the NISS. Conclusion: the study demonstrated comparable efficacy of NISS and ISS in predicting mortality. These findings hold significance in the hospital setting. Professionals must be familiar with these scales to utilize them competently for each patient. Abstract Background Understanding the causes of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is crucial for effective treatment and preventing recurrences. The SMASH-U scale is a suggested method for classifying and predicting the outcomes of ICH. Objective To describe the SMASH-U classification and outcomes by etiology in patients admitted to a comprehensive stroke center in São Paulo, Brazil. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients admitted to the hospital or outpatient clinic between April 2015 and January 2018. Two stroke neurologists evaluated the SMASH-U classification, and patients with incomplete medical records were excluded. Results Out of the 2000 patients with a stroke diagnosis evaluated, 140 were included in the final analysis. The mean age was 57.9 (± 15.5) years, and 54.3% were male. Hypertension was the most frequent etiology, accounting for 41.4% of cases, followed by amyloid angiopathy (18.5%) and structural lesions (14.1%). Structural lesions were more common among women and patients under 45 years old. Favorable outcomes were observed in 61% of patients with structural lesions, compared to 10% of patients with medication-related etiologies. Conclusion This study provides important evidence regarding the etiological classification of Brazilian patients with ICH. Hypertension and amyloid angiopathy were the most frequent causes, while structural lesions and systemic diseases were more common in younger patients. Biocomposites have gained attention in the packaging industry due to their potential as sustainable alternatives to conventional synthetic materials. In this study, novel cotton incorporated poly(lactic acid)/thermoplastic starch biocomposites were developed for packaging applications using in short shelf life products the extrusion method. Pelletized samples obtained by extrusion were stamped from plates obtained by compression and were characterized through measurement of density, hardness, contact angle and water absorption, as well as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). No significant changes in the density results were observed. A slight increase in the hardness of formulations in relation to the PLA was associated with the presence of cotton fiber in biocomposites. The FTIR results revealed physical interaction of PLA, TPS and cotton fiber. By DSC analysis, for all formulations the melting exhibited only one peak, suggesting good homogeneity and interaction among the components, as observed by TG/DTG results, and corroborating SEM analysis. The biocomposite PLA/TPS/Cotton 85/10/5 wt.% displayed greater increase in water absorption than both 95/5/0 and 90/5/5 wt.% formulations, which can be attributed to the increase in starch proportion, confirming the contact angle results. The hydrophilic tendency corroborated the biodegradation process in the packaging end-of-life. materials study polylactic poly lactic acid/thermoplastic acidthermoplastic acid /thermoplastic thermoplastic method FTIR, , (FTIR) SEM. .
