RESUMO: Descreve-se o primeiro caso de pitiose rinofacial com disseminação em um equino adulto no Uruguai. O animal apresentava uma massa parcialmente circunscrita medindo 30 x 23 x 9 cm acometendo o lado direito da face e com envolvimento dos tecidos cutâneo, subcutâneo e muscular, cavidade nasal direita e estruturas adjacentes. Os principais achados patológicos incluem a formação de kunkers microscopicamente caracterizados por dermatite piogranulomatosa e eosinofilica, reação de Splendore-Hoeppli, e numerosas hifas intralesionais imunomarcadas com anticorpo policlonal anti-Pythium insidiosum. Lesões semelhantes foram observadas no pulmão e nos linfonodos submandibulares. O diagnóstico foi baseado nas lesões histológicas características e imunomarcação com anticorpo anti-P. insidiosum. ABSTRACT: We described the first case of rhinofacial pythiosis with dissemination in an adult horse in Uruguay. The affected horse presented a partially circumscribed mass measuring 30 x 23 x 9 cm affecting the right side of the face with involvement of cutaneous, subcutaneous, and muscular tissues, the right nasal cavity, and adjacent structures. At postmortem examination, the main lesions were “kunkers” characterized by pyogranulomatous and eosinophilic dermatitis, Splendore-Hoeppli reaction and numerous intralesional hyphae immunolabeling with polyclonal anti-Pythium insidiosum antibody. Similar lesions were observed in the lung and submandibular lymph nodes. RESUMO: Este estudo relata quatro surtos de intoxicação por Cestrum axillare em bovinos. Os surtos ocorreram em fazendas do Distrito Federal, Goiás e Minas Gerais durante a estação seca, afetando vacas e novilhas, com taxa de mortalidade de 1 a 14,28%. Os animais afetados apresentaram sinais neurológicos e decúbito, seguidos de óbito em 12 horas. Alguns animais foram encontrados mortos. Foram observadas lesões macroscópicas e histológicas típicas de hepatotoxicidade aguda como hepatomegalia, evidenciação do padrão lobular e necrose centrolobular a massiva. ABSTRACT: This study reports four outbreaks of Cestrum axillare poisoning in cattle. Outbreaks occurred in farms of the Distrito Federal, Goiás, and Minas Gerais states during the dry season, affecting cows and heifers, with a mortality rate of 1 to 14,28%. Poisoned animals showed neurological signs and recumbency, followed by death within 12 hours, and some animals were found dead. Resumo O presente trabalho revisa a situação epidemiológica das infecções por Anaplasma marginale e Babesia spp. e a ocorrência de surtos de Tristeza parasitária bovina (TPB) no Brasil. Em áreas de instabilidade enzoótica, as condições ambientais interferem no desenvolvimento do Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus: o frio do inverno na região Sul; as inundações no Pantanal; e a baixa umidade na Caatinga. Por outra parte, as condições climáticas das zonas de estabilidade (os biomas Cerrado, Amazônia e Mata Atlântica) favorecem o desenvolvimento do carrapato. A TPB não é comum nas áreas estáveis, porque os animais estão em contato frequente com os parasitas, adquirindo imunidade naturalmente. Podem, porém, ocorrer surtos quando um número considerável de carrapatos infectados infesta bezerros, durante o período de resistência inata, ou quando adultos que foram criados em ambientes livres de carrapatos infestam-se, pela primeira vez, ao serem transportados para áreas estáveis. Abstract The present work reviews the epidemiologic situation of Anaplasma marginale and Babesia spp. infections and the occurrence of cattle tick fever outbreaks in Brazil. In areas of tick fever enzootic instability, environmental conditions interfere with the development of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus: chilly winter in the southern region, floods in the Pantanal, and low humidity in the Caatinga. In contrast, the climatic conditions of stable zones (Cerrado, Amazon and Atlantic Forest biomes) favor tick development. In enzootic areas, tick fever is uncommon because the animals are in frequent contact with the parasite, acquiring immunity naturally during the period of innate resistance; however, outbreaks may occur when calves become infested by considerable numbers of infected ticks during this period or in adults raised in tick-free environments that become infested for the first time when transporting to stable areas. It is necessary to better understand the disease’s risk factors under stable conditions and the implications of the mechanical and other vector transmission of A. marginale. RESUMO: Descreve-se um caso de infarto cerebral e meningoencefalite trombótica devido a candidíase em um bezerro de sete meses de idade. A morte ocorreu três dias após o início de apatia, febre e desvio lateral da cabeça para a esquerda. As alterações macroscópicas no cérebro consistiam em assimetria dos hemisférios telencefálicos; o hemisfério direito estava aumentado, causando herniação cerebelar. Uma extensa área vermelha focal foi observada na superfície do lobo occipital direito. Nos cortes transversais do encéfalo fixado, as lesões revelaram áreas extensas, marrom-avermelhadas, moles ou cavitadas, afetando a substância branca e cinzenta desde o nível do tálamo até o cerebelo e comprimindo as estruturas subjacentes. Histologicamente, havia meningoencefalite necrossupurativa multifocal aguda, coalescente, associada a vasculite, congestão, trombose, edema, infarto e hifas fúngicas intralesionais. O diagnóstico de infarto cerebral e meningoencefalite trombótica devido a candidíase foi feito pelas alterações patológicas, coloração e características morfológicas do agente e imuno-histoquímica. ABSTRACT: We described a case of cerebral infarction and thrombotic meningoencephalitis due to candidiasis in a seven-month-old calf. The death occurred three days after the onset of apathy, fever, and the head’s lateral deviation to the left. Macroscopic changes in the brain consisted of asymmetry of telencephalic hemispheres; the right hemisphere was enlarged, causing cerebellar herniation. A focally extensive red area was observed on the surface of the right occipital lobe. At cross-sections of the fixed brain, the lesions revealed to be extensive, red-brown, soft or cavitated areas affecting the white and grey matter from the level of the thalamus to the cerebellum and compressing subjacent structures. Histologically, there was acute, coalescent, multifocal necrosupurative meningoencephalitis, associated with vasculitis, congestion, thrombosis, edema, infarction, and intralesional fungal hyphae. The diagnosis of cerebral infarction and thrombotic meningoencephalitis due to candidiasis was made by the pathological changes, the staining and morphological characteristics of the agent, and immunohistochemistry. RESUMO: Descrevem-se os aspectos clínicos, patológicos e reprodutivos de um surto de deficiência de cobre em cabras leiteiras e em cabritos da região semiárida de Pernambuco, Brasil. Dez cabras leiteiras adultas com sinais clínicos de deficiência de cobre e quatro cabritos com ataxia enzoótica nascidos dessas cabras foram separados do rebanho e examinados. Nas cabras leiteiras, a concentração média de cobre sérico foi de 6,1±2,8mmol/L e a concentração média de ferro sérico foi de 39,5±8,2mmol/L. Nos cabritos, a concentração média de cobre sérico foi de 3,8±0,9mmol/L e a concentração média de ferro sérico foi de 38,5±4,1mmol/L. Os sinais clínicos nas cabras consistiram em mucosas pálidas, anemia, diarreia, acromotriquia, pelos opacos e quebradiços e alopecia. As principais alterações reprodutivas consistiram em anestro prolongado, reabsorção embrionária e aumento da taxa de retenção de placenta. Os cabritos nascidos vivos dessas cabras nasceram fracos, com ataxia neonatal ou desenvolveram ataxia tardia em até 70 dias de vida. Seis cabras leiteiras e quatro cabritos foram necropsiados. Nas cabras, a maioria dos ovários examinados macroscopicamente eram pequenos, firmes e não apresentavam folículos viáveis em sua superfície. Microscopicamente, houve redução de folículos viáveis, além de desorganização das estruturas foliculares, com marcada atresia folicular. Macroscopicamente não foram observadas alterações nos cabritos com ataxia enzoótica. As lesões histológicas observadas nesses cabritos consistiram em cromatólise neuronal e degeneração axonal, principalmente em neurônios da medula espinhal. Neste estudo a fonte dos altos teores de ferro no soro não foi identificada, mas sabe-se que surtos de deficiência de cobre podem ocorrer devido ao excesso de ingestão de ferro, principalmente quando não é fornecida suplementação mineral adequada para os rebanhos caprinos.

ABSTRACT: The clinical, pathological and reproductive aspects of an outbreak of copper deficiency in dairy goats and kids from the semiarid region of Pernambuco, Brazil are described. Ten adult dairy goats with clinical signs of deficiency and four kids presenting enzootic ataxia born from copper deficient does were separated from the herd, and examined. In the dairy goats, the average serum concentration of copper was 6.1±2.8mmol/L and iron was 39.5±8.2mmol/L. In kids, the average serum concentration of copper was 3.8±0.9mmol/L and iron was 38.5±4.1mmol/L. Clinical signs in dairy goats consisted of pale mucous membranes, anemia, emaciation, diarrhea, achromotrichia, brittle hair and alopecia. The main reproductive alterations consisted of prolonged anestrus, embryonic resorption and high indices of retained placenta. The kids born from copper deficient dairy goats were weak, and presented neonatal or late ataxia until 70 days of life. Six dairy goats and four kids were necropsied. Most ovaries examined were small, firm and did not present viable follicles on their surface. Microscopically, there was reduction of viable follicles in addition to disorganization of follicular and stromal structures, with marked follicular atresia. Microscopically, changes in kids with enzootic ataxia consisted of neuronal chromatolysis and axonal degeneration, mainly in neurons of the spinal cord. In this study, the source of high iron was not identified, but it is known that outbreaks of copper deficiency can occur due to excess iron intake, mainly when adequate mineral supplementation is not provided for the goat herds.

RESUMO: Relatamos dois surtos de intoxicação por nitrato e nitrito na Paraíba, Nordeste do Brasil. O primeiro por Pennisetum purpureum (capim-elefante), e o segundo por P. purpureum e Brachiaria spp. (capim braquiária); ambos ocorreram durante uma estiagem prolongada. No primeiro surto, a irrigação das pastagens com água poluída e esgoto contribuiu para o acúmulo de nitrato. O segundo surto ocorreu em pastagens cultivadas na borda de uma barragem, que há muito tempo ficavam submersas, acumulando grande quantidade de matéria orgânica no solo. Outros prováveis fatores de risco para o acúmulo de nitrato incluíram o uso de fertilizantes químicos e herbicidas e a queima da vegetação. No primeiro surto, quatro bezerros de um total de 42 bovinos morreram, e no segundo surto 49 de 243 bovinos, incluindo adultos, jovens de um ano e um bezerro de 2 dias de idade morreram. Os sinais clínicos incluíram dispneia, cianose, ataxia e quedas, levando à morte. A presença de nitratos foi detectada em ambos os surtos pelo teste de difenilamina. Testes quantitativos foram realizados no segundo surto usando um medidor portátil de nitrato, e altas concentrações de nitrato foram encontradas. Os achados macroscópicos característicos e a ausência de lesões microscópicas e a resposta ao tratamento com azul de metileno foram fundamentais para o diagnóstico de intoxicação por nitratos e nitritos. Concluímos que a intoxicação por nitratos e nitritos em ruminantes na região semiárida do Nordeste do Brasil é frequente devido ao cultivo de gramíneas nas bordas de barragens que estiveram cobertas por água por longos períodos ou em áreas irrigadas por água poluída e/ou esgoto. Além disso, o uso de medidor portátil é uma alternativa eficaz para a quantificação de nitratos em pastagens.

ABSTRACT: We report two outbreaks of nitrate and nitrite poisoning in Paraíba, Northeast Brazil. The first, due to Pennisetum purpureum (elephant grass), and the second, due to P. purpureum and Brachiaria spp. (brachiaria grass), both occurred during a prolonged drought. In the first outbreak, the irrigation of the pastures with wastewater and sewage contributed to nitrate accumulation. The second outbreak occurred in pastures cultivated in the border of a dam, that had been submerged for long time accumulating large amounts of organic matter in the soil. Other probably risk factors for nitrate accumulation included the use of chemical fertilizers and herbicides and burning of the vegetation. In the first outbreak, four calves out of a total of 42 cattle died, and in the second outbreak 49 out of 243 cattle, including adults, yearlings, and a 2-day-old calf died. The clinical signs included dyspnea, cyanosis, ataxia, and falls, leading to death. The presence of nitrates was detected in both outbreaks using the diphenylamine test. Quantitative tests were performed in the second outbreak using a portable nitrate meter, and high nitrate concentrations were found. The characteristic macroscopic findings and absence of microscopic lesions and response to treatment with methylene blue were key to the diagnosis of poisoning by nitrates and nitrites. We conclude that poisoning by nitrates and nitrites in ruminants in the semiarid region of Northeastern Brazil is frequent due to the cultivation of grasses in the border of dams that had been covered by water for long periods or in areas irrigated by wastewater and/or sewage. In addition, the use of a portable measuring device is an effective alternative for the quantification of nitrates in pastures.

RESUMO: Descrevem-se casos de periodontite em ovinos provenientes das regiões do Agreste e Zona da Mata de Pernambuco, Nordeste do Brasil. Informações sobre raça, idade e sexo dos animais afetados bem como os aspectos clínicos e patológicos dos surtos foram obtidos a partir de visitas às propriedades e são reportados. 15 animais de um total de 450 ovinos da raça Santa Inês, com idade entre três a doze anos de idade manifestaram baixa condição corporal, pelagem sem brilho e dificuldade de alimentar-se, acompanhado de dor à palpação na região mandibular. O exame físico da cavidade oral dos animais afetados e os achados post mortem de indivíduos abatidos revelaram graus variados de periodontite, desgaste, fratura, mobilidade e perda dentária, associados a retração gengival, presença de biofilme e compactação de resíduos alimentares entre os dentes incisivos, pré-molares e molares. Em oito animais havia aumento de volume mandibular e em dois deles observaram-se abscessos fistulados que ocorreram exclusivamente nos dentes mandibulares. A ocorrência de periodontite em ovinos não têm sido registrada no Nordeste do Brasil, sendo estes os primeiros casos descritos na região.

ABSTRACT: Cases of periodontitis in sheep from the Agreste and Zona da Mata regions of Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil, are described. Information on breed, age and sex of affected animals as well as clinical and pathological aspects of the disease were obtained during farm visits. Fifteen animals from a total of 450 Santa Inês sheep, aged between three and twelve years, showed low body condition score, dull coat, and difficulty in feeding followed by pain on palpation of the mandibular region. Physical examination of the oral cavity of affected animals and post mortem findings of slaughtered individuals revealed varying degrees of periodontitis, wear, fracture, mobility, and loss of teeth associated with gingival retraction, presence of biofilm and food packing between incisors, premolars and molars teeth. Increased mandibular volume was observed in eight animals and, in two of them, an abscess fistula, exclusively in mandibular teeth. The occurrence of periodontitis in sheep had not been recorded until now in Northeastern Brazil and, thus, this is the first description of cases in the region.

RESUMO: A intoxicação espontânea e experimental por Tephrosia cinerea no semiárido nordestino só foi descrita em ovinos. Patologicamente, tal intoxicação leva a ascite e fibrose hepática centrolobular. No entanto, esses efeitos requerem um estudo experimental em caprinos. Este estudo teve como objetivo determinar a suscetibilidade de caprinos à ingestão de T. cinerea e a dose tóxica mínima, descrevendo os principais achados clínicos e anatomopatológicos. A intoxicação foi reproduzida experimentalmente em um ovino que recebeu 10g/kg da planta moída e em dois caprinos, o primeiro recebendo a dose de 5g/kg e o segundo recebendo 10g/kg da planta moída. O ovino apresentou distensão abdominal 34 dias após o início da ingestão da planta, desenvolvendo decúbito esternal, dificuldade respiratória, opistótono, trismo mandibular, salivação, disfagia, vocalização e movimentos de pedalada no 50º dia do experimento. Foi observado acúmulo de líquido na cavidade abdominal e fígado via necropsia, com superfície capsular irregular e levemente esbranquiçada. Histologicamente, as principais lesões observadas no fígado foram fibrose moderada, distensão sinusoidal acentuada, acompanhada de hemorragia acentuada, por vezes formando pontes entre as regiões centrolobulares, associada à dissociação dos cordões de hepatócitos. Havia discretos astrócitos de Alzheimer tipo II na substância cinzenta na região do córtex occipital no sistema nervoso. A cabra 2 apresentou apatia, sonolência e perda de peso; no 62º dia, decúbito lateral evoluiu para decúbito esternal, com rotação do pescoço em direção ao flanco. Na necropsia, observou-se edema acentuado na face e barbela, e leve acúmulo de líquido; foi observado material levemente amarelado na cavidade abdominal. Havia áreas enegrecidas discretas na superfície capsular no fígado. Histologicamente, o fígado apresentava leve fibrose centrolobular associada à discreta dissociação dos cordões de hepatócitos e leve degeneração vacuolar do citoplasma dos hepatócitos. A cabra 1 não apresentou sinais clínicos; na necropsia, discretas áreas multifocais foram observadas no fígado na superfície capsular. Histologicamente, foi detectada degeneração vacuolar intracitoplasmática difusa dos hepatócitos. O quadro clínico e os achados anatomopatológicos diferem entre as espécies, comprovando a menor suscetibilidade dos caprinos à ingestão de Tephrosia cinerea (em relação aos ovinos), com diferenças na patogênese e aspectos epidemiológicos da intoxicação.

ABSTRACT: Spontaneous and experimental poisoning by Tephrosia cinerea in the northeastern semiarid region of Brazil has only been described in sheep. Pathologically, such poisoning leads to ascites and centrilobular liver fibrosis. However, these effects require an experimental study in goats. This study aimed to determine the goats’ susceptibility to the ingestion of T. cinerea and the minimum toxic dose, describing the main clinical and anatomopathological findings. Poisoning was reproduced experimentally in one sheep that received 10g/kg of the ground plant and in two goats, the first receiving a dose of 5g/kg and the second receiving 10g/kg of the ground plant. The sheep presented abdominal distension 34 days after beginning the ingestion of the plant, developing sternal decubitus, breathing difficulty, opisthotonos, mandibular trismus, salivation, dysphagia, vocalization, and pedaling movements on the 50th day of the experiment. Fluid accumulation was observed in the abdominal cavity and liver via necropsy, with an irregular, slightly whitish capsular surface. Histologically, the main lesions observed in the liver were moderate fibrosis, marked sinusoidal distension, accompanied by marked hemorrhage, sometimes forming bridges between the centrilobular regions, associated with a dissociation of hepatocyte cords. There were discrete Alzheimer’s type II astrocytes in the gray matter in the region of the occipital cortex in the nervous system. Goat 2 showed apathy, drowsiness, and weight loss; on the 62th day, lateral decubitus evolved to sternal decubitus, with a rotation of the neck towards the flank. At necropsy, marked edema was observed on the face and dewlap, and a slight accumulation of liquid; slightly yellowish material was observed in the abdominal cavity. There were discrete blackened areas on the capsular surface in the liver. Histologically, the liver showed mild centrilobular fibrosis associated with mild dissociation of hepatocyte cords and mild vacuolar degeneration of the hepatocyte cytoplasm. Goat 1 showed no clinical signs; at necropsy, discrete multifocal areas were observed in the liver on the capsular surface. Histologically, diffuse intracytoplasmic vacuolar degeneration of hepatocytes was detected. The clinical picture and anatomopathological findings differ between the species, proving the lower susceptibility of goats to Tephrosia cinerea ingestion (compared to sheep), with differences in the pathogenesis and epidemiological aspects of poisoning.

RESUMO: As lactonas macrocíciclas são amplamente utilizadas como endectocidas em animais de produção. Casos de intoxicação ocorrem em situações de sobredosagem e/ou desnutrição, em animais jovens ou em raças geneticamente suscetíveis. Descreve-se a intoxicação por doramectina em bovinos desnutridos, com 15 meses de idade, que receberam uma dose 1,6 vezes maior que a dose recomendada. Os animais apresentaram salivação, ataxia, incoordenação motora, relutância em se movimentar e decúbito esternal. Dois animais se recuperaram espontaneamente; um morreu e foi necropsiado. Não foram observadas alterações macro e microscópicas. Esse relato sugere que a doramectina pode causar intoxicação em bovinos desnutridos quando administrada em doses maiores que as recomendadas e que o histórico é fundamental para estabelecer o diagnóstico.

ABSTRACT: Macrocyclic lactones are widely used as endectocides in farm animals. Intoxications occur in situations of overdose and/or malnutrition, in young animals, and in genetically sensitive breeds. We describe the intoxication by doramectin in malnourished 15-month-old cattle that received 1.6 times the recommended dose. The animals presented salivation, ataxia, motor incoordination, reluctance to move, and sternal recumbency. Two animals recovered spontaneously; one died and was necropsied. No gross or microscopic changes were observed. This study suggests that doramectin may cause intoxication when administered to malnourished cattle in doses higher than those recommended and that knowing the history is essential to establish a diagnosis.

Resumen: En Uruguay la problemática de la resistencia de Rhipicephalus microplus a los acaricidas habilitados ha ido incrementando con los años, agravándose con la aparición de poblaciones multirresistentes en 2009. El objetivo del trabajo fue analizar la resistencia de 47 poblaciones de garrapatas entre los años 2017 y 2018 para cinco grupos químicos: piretroides (cipermetrina, flumetrina), organofosforados (ethion), amidinas (amitraz), fenilpirazoles (fipronil) y lactonas macrocíclicas (ivermectina), utilizando el Test de Paquete de Larvas (TLP) y una encuesta que se realizaba al responsable del establecimiento. De las 47 poblaciones analizadas 46 fueron resistentes a piretroides (46 cipermetrina, 45 flumetrina), presentando en su mayoría un alto nivel de resistencia. Todas las poblaciones muestreadas presentaron resistencia al menos a un grupo químico. El 68,1 % a tres o más grupos químicos de forma simultánea pero ninguna presentó resistencia ni susceptibilidad a los cinco analizados. Hubo poblaciones que presentaron resistencia a algunos grupos químicos que no habían sido utilizados en los establecimientos de los que fueron muestreadas. La mayoría de los predios realizaron un número mayor de tratamientos al año que el recomendado para un tratamiento generacional. Para todos los principios activos evaluados hubo poblaciones con sospechas de resistencia que no se confirmaron mediante TPL. Esto refleja las situaciones complejas que presentan hoy estos establecimientos en torno a la resistencia a los acaricidas por parte de R. microplus, que podría estar vinculada al modo, frecuencia y tiempo de uso de estos acaricidas. Así como también a su uso pero con otros fines y a los movimientos, ingresos principalmente, de animales a los predios.

Summary: Acaricide resistance of Rhipicephalus microplus tick in Uruguay means a serious problem that has been worsening through years hitting a high point with the detection of multiresistant populations on 2009. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze resistance for five chemical groups: pyrethroids (cypermethrin, flumethrin), organophosphates (ethion), amidines (amitraz), phenylpyrazoles (fipronil), macrocyclic lactones (ivermectin) on 47 populations between years 2017 and 2018 by using the Larval Packet Test (LPT) and a quiz made to the responsible for the farm. Results show that 46 from the 47 populations analyzed were resistant to pyrethroids (46 to cypermethrina, 45 to flumethryn). This chemical group also showed the largest number of resistant populations with a high grade of resistance. Every population showed to be resistant to at least one chemical group furthermore the 68.1 % of the populations were resistant to at least 3 chemical groups simultaneously but no population was diagnosed resistant to the 5 chemical groups analyzed neither to be susceptible to all 5 chemical groups. It stands out that there were populations resistant to some chemical groups that the farms of origin had never used. There were registered a higher number of treatments done per year to control R. microplus, than the one recommended for a generational treatment. For every active ingredient evaluated, there were suspicions of resistance that the Larval Packet Test could not confirm. This reflects the complex situation of these farms in what refers to acaricide resistance of R. microplus. This may be related to the way, frequency and time acaricides had been used on these farms, as well as using them for other purposes and also due to the impact of the income of animals infested with R. microplus from other origins.

RESUMO: O presente artigo apresenta casos de conidiobolomicose em cabras adultas com sinais clínicos caracterizados por secreção nasal serosa, dispneia, apatia e perda de peso. Dois caprinos foram necropsiados. Na necropsia, em corte sagital da cabeça, foi observado aumento de volume e superfície ulcerada contendo massa amarela e friável com consistência irregular e granular no septo nasal e conchas nasais ventrais. Uma cabra apresentou também lesões na pele da orelha e no membro pélvico direito. Microscopicamente, as lesões foram caracterizadas por granulomas multifocais com área central de necrose, contendo imagens de hifas fúngicas não coradas, circundadas por infiltrado inflamatório granulomatoso. Amostras das lesões submetidas à imuno-histoquímica e reação em cadeia da polimerase foram positivas para Conidiobolus lamprauges. Este é o primeiro registro de conidiobolomicose em caprinos e deve ser considerado no diagnóstico diferencial de rinite e dermatite em caprinos.

ABSTRACT: The present article presents cases of conidiobolomycosis in adult goats with clinical signs characterized by serous nasal discharge, dyspnea, apathy, and weight loss. Two goats were necropsied. Necropsy displayed increased volume on the sagittal section of the head and an ulcerated surface containing a yellow friable mass with irregular and granular consistency in the nasal septum and in the ventral nasal turbinate. One goat also presented lesions on the ear’s skin and the right pelvic limb. Microscopically, lesions were characterized by multifocal granulomas with a central necrotic area containing non-stained fungal hyphae images surrounded by a granulomatous infiltrate. Samples of the lesions examined by immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction were positive for Conidiobolus lamprauges. This is the first report of conidiobolomycosis in goats, and the disease should be considered in the differential diagnoses for rhinitis and dermatitis in goats.

RESUMO: O fipronil foi registrado no Uruguai em 1997 e, desde então, tem sido utilizado no controle de Haematobia irritans irritans e Rhipicephalus microplus. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a susceptibilidade de populações de campo de H. irritans ao fipronil. Além disso, foi realizada uma pesquisa para avaliar a utilização de fipronil e as práticas de controle de H. irritans nas fazendas de onde provinham as moscas. Para os bioensaios, 31 populações de campo de H. irritans foram expostas a 10 concentrações de fipronil (3,2-16,0μg.cm2), e seus valores de CL50 foram calculados usando análise probit. Um bioensaio foi realizado com H. irritans da colônia suscetível mantida no USDA-ARS Knipling-Bushland U.S. Livestock Insects Research Laboratory para comparação e cálculo das razões de resistência (RRs). Todas as 31 populações de campo pesquisadas no estudo eram suscetíveis ao fipronil, com taxas de resistência variando de <0,5 à 2,2. Quatro populações com Rrs >1 não diferiram significativamente da cepa suscetível. Uma única população apresentou RR >2,2. No geral, o fipronil tinha sido usado principalmente para o controle de R. microplus, e em apenas três fazendas, que estavam livres de R. microplus, o fipronil era utilizado para o controle da H. irritans. Em 17 fazendas não tinha sido utilizado fipronil nos últimos três anos. Conclui-se que no Uruguai as populações de H. irritans no campo permanecem suscetíveis ao fipronil.

ABSTRACT: Fipronil was registered in Uruguay in 1997, and, since then, it has been used for the control of Haematobia irritans irritans and Rhipicephalus microplus. The susceptibility of H. irritants to this drug has not been evaluated. Therefore, the goal of the present study was to evaluate the resistance of H. irritans to fipronil. Additionally, a survey was carried out with the farmers to evaluate the use of fipronil for H. irritans control in the ranches where the flies came from. For the bioassays, 31 field populations of H. irritans were exposed to 10 concentrations of fipronil (3.2-16.0μg.cm2), and their LC50 values were calculated using probit analysis. A bioassay was performed with horn flies from the susceptible colony maintained at the USDA-ARS Knipling-Bushland U.S. Livestock Insects Research Laboratory for comparison and calculation of resistance ratios (RRs). All 31 field populations surveyed in the study were susceptible to fipronil, with resistance ratios ranging from <0.5 to 2.2. Four populations with RRs >1 did not differ significantly from the susceptible strain. A single population showed an RR >2.2. Overall, the survey shows that fipronil was mostly used for R. microplus control, and in only three ranches, which were free of R. microplus, was fipronil used for horn fly control. Seventeen farmers did not use fipronil at all in the last three years. It is concluded that, in Uruguay, field populations of horn flies remain susceptible to fipronil.

RESUMO: A hipomagnesemia é uma das principais causas de morte em vacas de corte em pastagem em países do Hemisfério Sul, como Argentina, Austrália e Nova Zelândia. Aqui, revisamos a literatura sobre hipomagnesemia em bovinos de corte e descrevemos um surto no Uruguai. A doença ocorreu no final do outono, afetando vacas Aberdeen Angus e Aberdeen Angus x Hereford de 6-11 anos de idade em boas condições corporais, lactantes, multíparas e pastando em campos naturais que foram melhorados com fertilização e plantio de azevém e aveia. Aproximadamente 40 de 225 vacas foram afetadas e 24 (10,7%) morreram. O diagnóstico presuntivo de hipomagnesemia foi estabelecido com base na morte súbita, sinais clínicos neuromusculares agudos, dados epidemiológicos e a resposta à administração de Mg. O diagnóstico foi confirmado pela detecção de baixos níveis de Mg no soro (0,47-0,57mmol/L), humor vítreo (0,47-0,80mmol/L), humor aquoso (0,66mmol/L) e líquido cefalorraquidiano (0,59mmol/L). O componente mais importante da dieta correspondia a pastagens de azevém e aveia de rápido crescimento, as quais apresentaram altas concentrações de K (3,48%), N (4,38%) e P (0,94%), que sugerem hipomagnesemia secundária. Além disso, a relação K/(Ca+Mg) foi de 2,38 em forragens de azevém e aveia (valor de referência: 2,2) e 0,15 no solo (valor de referência: 0,09), que representam fatores de risco para hipomagnesemia. Em conclusão, a hipomagnesemia é uma causa importante de mortalidade em gado de corte em pastagens naturais melhoradas no Uruguai e pode ser facilmente prevenida pela correta suplementação sazonal de Mg.

ABSTRACT: Hypomagnesemia is a major cause of death in grazing beef cows in countries of the Southern Hemisphere such as Argentina, Australia and New Zealand. Here we review the literature on hypomagnesemia in beef cattle and describe an outbreak in Uruguay. The disease occurred in late autumn, affecting 6 to 11-year-old Aberdeen Angus and Hereford x Aberdeen Angus lactating multiparous cows in good body condition, grazing on natural grasslands that had been improved by fertilization and sowing of seeds of ryegrass and oat. Approximately 40 out of 225 cows were affected and 24 (10.7%) died. A presumptive diagnosis of hypomagnesemia was established based on sudden death, acute neuromuscular clinical signs, epidemiological data, and the response to Mg administration. The diagnosis was confirmed by detecting low Mg concentrations in serum (0.47-0.57mmol/L), vitreous humor (0.47-0.80mmol/L), aqueous humor (0.66mmol/L) and cerebrospinal fluid (0.59mmol/L). The largest component of the diet corresponding to fast-growing and exuberant forages of ryegrass and oat had high concentrations of K (3.48%), N (4.38%) and P (0.94%), suggesting secondary hypomagnesemia. In addition, the K/(Ca+Mg) ratio was 2.38 in forages of ryegrass and oat (reference value: 2.2), and 0.15 in the soil (reference value: 0.09), which represent risk factors for hypomagnesemia. In conclusion, hypomagnesemia is an important cause of mortality in beef cattle grazing improved natural grasslands in Uruguay and it can be easily prevented by correct seasonal Mg supplementation.

RESUMO: Este trabalho faz uma breve revisão da calcinose enzoótica em ovinos e descreve dois surtos de intoxicação por Nierembergia rivularis em ovinos no Uruguai. Os surtos ocorreram em propriedades localizadas em uma ilha (Surto A), e nas margens (Surto B) do lago do Rincón del Bonete. Foram afetados ovinos de todas as idades, exceto cordeiros lactentes. Os primeiros sinais clínicos ocorreram no início de outubro e as mortes de dezembro a fevereiro. Morbidade de 10% foi observada nos Surtos A e B. A mortalidade foi de 7,2% e 2,8% nos Surtos A e B, respectivamente. Os sinais clínicos incluíram perda de peso, abdômen retraído, marcha rígida e cifose. Foram necropsiados um animal de cada rebanho. Observou-se mineralização arterial e pulmonar, nefrocalcinose e osteopetrose no exame macroscópico e histológico dos dois ovinos. Hiperplasia e carcinoma de células C da tireoide foram observados no ovino A. O ovino B apresentou hiperplasia de células C da tireoide e atrofia das células principais da paratireoide. As paratireoides do ovino A não foram examinadas. O diagnóstico diferencial da calcinose enzoótica no Sul da América do Sul deve considerar quatro plantas calcinogênicas da família Solanaceae: Solanum glaucophyllum, Solanum stuckertii, Nierembergia veitchii e Nierembergia rivularis.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to do a brief review of enzootic calcinosis in sheep and to report two outbreaks of Nierembergia rivularis poisoning in sheep in Uruguay. The outbreaks occurred in farms located on an island (Outbreak A) and on the border (Outbreak B) of the Rincón del Bonete lake. Sheep of all ages were affected, with the exception of suckling lambs. The first clinical signs occurred in early October, and deaths occurred from December to February. Outbreaks A and B had morbidity of 10%, and the mortality was 7.2% and 2.8% in Outbreaks A and B, respectively. The clinical signs included weight loss, retracted abdomen, stiff gait, and kyphosis. An autopsy was performed on one sheep from each outbreak. Pulmonary and arterial calcification, nephrocalcinosis, and osteopetrosis were observed in gross and microscopic examination in both sheep. Thyroid C-cell hyperplasia and carcinoma was observed in sheep A. Sheep B showed thyroid C-cell hyperplasia and parathyroid chief cell atrophy. The parathyroid was not examined in the sheep from Outbreak A. The differential diagnosis of enzootic calcinosis in southern South America should consider four toxic plants in the Solanaceae family: Solanum glaucophyllum, Solanum stuckertii, Nierembergia veitchii, and Nierembergia rivularis.
