Gender equity still needs to be fostered in society, and education can help change this scenario. This research aimed to investigate the impact of a didactic sequence involving inquiry-based science education and actions aimed at gender equity and deconstructing stereotypes in promoting more equitable participation among adolescent girls and boys. This is an action research in an extension activity, which analysed evaluative data from video recordings and questionnaires. The analysis involved immersion in the data, its categorisation and coding, and the determination of counting rules. The results indicate that inquiry based science education and jointly planned actions can help avoid sexist examples, foster examples of women's participation in Science, and enable equal participation between girls and boys, enabling them to interact and engage equally. Among the challenges identified, we have the greater difficulty in stimulating argumentation and explanation from both girls and boys and stimulating verbal participation from students who are not very participative.

La equidad de género sigue siendo un tema pendiente de fomentar en la sociedad y la educación puede contribuir a cambiar este escenario. Esta investigación se propuso investigar el impacto de una secuencia didáctica que incluía educación científica basada en la indagación y acciones dirigidas a la equidad de género y a la deconstrucción de estereotipos en la promoción de una participación más equitativa entre las niñas y los niños adolescentes. Se trata de una investigación-acción en una actividad de extensión, que analizó datos evaluativos de grabaciones de vídeo y cuestionarios. El análisis implicó la inmersión en los datos, su categorización y codificación, y la determinación de reglas de conteo. Los resultados indican que la educación científica basada en la indagación y las acciones planificadas conjuntamente pueden ayudar a evitar ejemplos sexistas, fomentar ejemplos de participación de mujeres en la Ciencia y permitir la participación igualitaria entre niñas y niños, permitiéndoles interactuar y participar en igualdad de condiciones. Entre los retos identificados, tenemos la mayor dificultad para estimular la argumentación y la explicación tanto de las niñas como de los niños y estimular la participación verbal de los/as estudiantes poco participativos/as.

A equidade de gênero ainda precisa ser fomentada na sociedade e a educação pode contribuir para mudar este cenário. Nesta pesquisa, objetivamos investigar o impacto de uma sequência didática envolvendo o Ensino de Ciências por Investigação e ações voltadas para equidade de gênero e desconstrução de estereotipias na promoção de uma participação mais equitativa entre meninas e meninos adolescentes. Trata-se de uma pesquisa-ação em uma atividade extensionista, que analisou dados avaliativos proveninentes de videogravações e questionários. A análise envolveu a imersão nos dados, sua categorização e codificação e a determinação de regras de contagem. Os resultados apontam que o Ensino de Ciências por Investigação e as ações conjuntamente planejadas podem ajudar a evitar exemplos sexistas, fomentar exemplos da participação das mulheres nas Ciências e possibilitar a equidade de participação entre meninas e meninos possibilitando-lhes interação e engajamentos equitativos. Entre os desafios identificados temos: a maior dificuldade de estimular a argumentação e a explicação tanto de meninas como de meninos, e estimular a participação verbal dos alunas/os pouco participativas/os.

Abstract Background: Loneliness and social isolation are significant public health issues. Family nurses play a vital role in identifying and preventing these phenomena and designing interventions to address them. Objective: To evaluate the impact of non-face-to-face follow-up consultations with family nurses on social isolation, quality of life, and disease self-management of older adults living alone in the community. Methodology: This pre-experimental study utilizes a one-group pretest-posttest design on a sample of 24 older adult patients. The Lubben Social Network Scale-6 (LSNS-6), the World Health Organization Quality of Life Group (WHOQOL) - OLD scale, and the Portuguese Version of the Therapeutic Self-Care Scale were used for data collection. Results: Following the intervention, patients’ satisfaction with the family nurse’s follow-up improved (p < 0.001). Additionally, there was a 33.3% increase in self-care management and a reduction in the risk of social isolation (45.8% to 33.3%). Although not statistically significant, there was also an increase in the global score of the quality of life variable. Conclusion: The non-face-to-face telenursing consultations positively affected the older adult patients’ satisfaction with the family nurse’s contact and follow-up, reduced social isolation, and improved self-care activities.

Resumo Enquadramento: A solidão e/ou isolamento social (IS) representa um problema de saúde pública. Os enfermeiros de família (EF), têm um papel crucial na prevenção, identificação e intervenção dos mesmos. Objetivo: Avaliar o impacte do acompanhamento por consulta não presencial do EF no IS, qualidade de vida (QdV) e autogestão da doença de pessoas idosas (PI) a viver só na comunidade. Metodologia: Estudo pré-experimental com desenho pré e pós, com 24 PI. Utilizou-se na recolha de dados: a escala breve de redes sociais de Lubben, a escala World Health Organization Quality of Life Group e o instrumento de autocuidado terapêutico. Resultados: Após a intervenção verificou-se uma melhoria no acompanhamento pelo EF (p < 0,001), um aumento de 33,3% na gestão do autocuidado e redução do risco de IS (45,8% para 33,3%). Na QdV houve um aumento no score global, contudo não estatisticamente significativo. Conclusão: O acompanhamento por consulta não presencial do EF teve efeito positivo no contacto e acompanhamento pelo EF, mitigação do IS e na melhoria de atividades de autocuidado.

Resumen Marco contextual: La soledad o el aislamiento social (IS) constituyen un problema de salud pública. Los enfermeros de familia (EF) desempeñan un papel crucial en la prevención, identificación e intervención en estos problemas. Objetivo: Evaluar el impacto del seguimiento mediante consulta no presencial del EF en el IS, la calidad de vida (QdV) y la autogestión de la enfermedad en personas mayores (PI) que viven solas en la comunidad. Metodología: Estudio preexperimental con diseño previo y posterior, con 24 PI. Para la recogida de datos se utilizó la escala breve de redes sociales de Lubben, la escala World Health Organization Quality of Life Group y el instrumento de autocuidado terapéutico. Resultados: Tras la intervención, se produjo una mejora de la supervisión por parte de los EF (p < 0,001), un aumento del 33,3% en la gestión del autocuidado y la reducción del riesgo de IS (45,8% para 33,3%). En la QdV hubo un aumento de la puntuación global, pero no fue estadísticamente significativo. Conclusión: El seguimiento mediante consulta no presencial con el EF tuvo un efecto positivo en el contacto y acompañamiento por parte del EF, la reducción del IS y la mejora de las actividades de autocuidado.

SUMMARY: The anatomical structure of wood from tree species found in floodplain forests can undergo alterations due to seasonal fluctuations in water levels, potentially affecting the volume of wood available for sustainable forest management in inundated areas. Thus, this study aims to characterize the anatomical features of Hura crepitans, Ocotea cymbarum and Eschweilera albiflora, assessing whether these characteristics differ from descriptions reported in previous studies of the same species conducted in other environments. Samples were collected from six adult trees of each species in two sustainable development reserves (SDR), Mamirauá and Amanã, located in the middle Solimões region, state of Amazonas, using a non-destructive method with an increment borer. Two samples were collected from three different heights (0.30, 1.30, and 2.30 m). Microscopic descriptions of the species were determined (porosity, axial parenchyma, rays, fibers, and vessel elements). Two-way factorial ANOVA followed by Tukey’s post hoc test was used to verify the differences in the anatomical elements of the wood samples collected at the three heights. The wood of H. crepitans has diffuse porosity, a predominance of solitary vessels, diffuse-in-aggregates, scarce axial parenchyma, non-storied rays, and libriform fibers. The wood of O. cymbarum has solitary vessels in radial multiples, vasicentric axial parenchyma, non-storied rays, and septate fibers. E. albiflora has a radial grouping of vessels, banded parenchyma, and non-storied rays. This study confirms previous descriptions of this species, revealing that its anatomical characteristics remain constant throughout the trunk.

RESUMEN: La estructura anatómica de la madera de las especies de árboles que se encuentran en los bosques de llanuras aluviales puede sufrir alteraciones debido a las fluctuaciones estacionales en los niveles de agua, afectando potencialmente el volumen de madera disponible para el manejo forestal sostenible de las áreas inundadas. Así, este estudio tiene como objetivo caracterizar las características anatómicas de Hura crepitans, Ocotea cymbarum y Eschweilera albiflora, evaluando si estas características difieren de las descripciones reportadas en estudios previos de las mismas especies realizados en otros ambientes. Se recolectaron muestras de seis árboles adultos de cada especie en dos reservas de desarrollo sustentable (RDS), Mamirauá y Amanã, ubicadas en la región media de Solimões, estado de Amazonas, utilizando un método no destructivo con barrenador incremental. Se tomaron dos muestras en cada una de tres alturas diferentes (0,30, 1,30 y 2,30 m). Se determinaron descripciones microscópicas de las especies (porosidad, parénquima axial, radios, fibras y elementos de los vasos). Se utilizó ANOVA factorial de dos vías seguido de la prueba post hoc de Tukey para verificar las diferencias en los elementos anatómicos de las muestras de madera recolectadas en las tres alturas. La madera de H. crepitans tiene porosidad difusa, predominio de vasos solitarios, difusos en agregados y escaso parénquima axial, radios no estratificados y fibras libriformes. La madera de O. cymbarum tiene vasos solitarios en múltiplos radiales, parénquima axial vasicéntrico, radios sin pisos y fibras septadas. La madera de E. albiflora tiene agrupaciones radiales de vasos, parénquima bandeado y radios sin pisos. Este estudio confirma descripciones previas de la especie, revelando que las características anatómicas permanecen sustancialmente constantes en todo el tronco.

ABSTRACT Objective: The objective of this narrative review is to discuss the current state of research funding in Brazil. Materials and Methods: This study is based on the most recent edition of the course Funding for Research and Innovation in the University of Sao Paulo School of Medicine which was a three-day course with 12 hours of instruction. The course brought together leading experts in the field to comprehensively discuss the current state of research funding in Brazil. Each speaker provided a presentation on a specific topic related to research funding. After the workshop, speakers assembled relevant topics in this manuscript. Results: collaborative research is critical for securing research funding. It optimizes proposal competitiveness, amplifies societal impact, and manages risks effectively. As such, fostering and supporting these collaborations is paramount for both researchers and funding agencies. To maintain the highest integrity in research, investigators involved in these collaborations must disclose any relationships that could potentially influence the outcomes or interpretation of their projects. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: A bibliometric analysis covering only the production of original studies or considering world production until 2022 has yet to be conducted. The creation and advancement of vaccines have also influenced research priorities, demonstrating the need for a new approach to this subject. OBJECTIVES: To analyze worldwide scientific production related to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the aged and to describe what has already been produced. DESIGN AND SETTING: Bibliometric analysis with a quantitative approach. METHOD: The search terms “COVID-19,” “SARS-CoV-2,” “Aged,” and “Elderly” were used to retrieve articles from the Web of Science database. A total of 684 articles were included in the analysis. Data were imported into RStudio Desktop Software and linked to R Software. The Bibliometrix R package and VOSviewer software were used for analysis. RESULTS: Most articles were published in 2020. These were produced by 4,937 authors and published in 379 journals. The keyword most used by the authors was “COVID-19.” Publications from 77 countries were obtained. China had the highest article production ranking, and Spain collaborated the most. The articles addressed the implications of the pandemic on the aged, the relationship between vaccination in the aged, and the implications for the disease itself. CONCLUSION: Further research should be conducted, mainly concerning vaccines and vaccination of the aged, owing to the need for and importance of immunization in this risk group, including assessing the long-term effects of vaccines. RESUMO: Os picos de LH abaixo do ideal podem bloquear ou retardar a ovulação durante programas de manejo reprodutivo em bovinos. Várias vias de sinalização podem aumentar o sinal de LH, incluindo em especial fatores de crescimento. No presente estudo, determinamos se o fator de crescimento de fibroblastos 18 (FGF18), que estimula algumas ações do pico de LH nas células da granulosa, pode potencializar a ação de uma dose sub fisiológica de LH em um sistema de cultivo de células da granulosa bovina (GC). A adição de FGF18 recombinante aumentou a concentração de progesterona (P4) no meio de cultura. ABSTRACT: Suboptimal LH surges can lead to delayed or absent ovulation during reproductive management programs in cattle. Several signaling pathways may enhance the LH signal, potentially including growth factors. In the present study, we determined whether Fibroblast growth factor 18 (FGF18), which mimics some actions of the LH surge on granulosa cells, may potentiate the action of a suboptimal dose of LH using an established bovine granulosa cell (GC) culture system. Addition of recombinant FGF18 increased the concentration of progesterone (P4) in the culture medium. A combination of LH and FGF18 in the culture medium increased the abundance of mRNA encoding EREG, EGR1 and EGR3, proteins that are early modulators of the LH-induced pre-ovulatory cascade. Porém, existem fontes de nitrogênio muito voláteis, que devem ser substituídas por nitrato de amônio, que é menos volátil e menos dependente da aplicação em dias chuvosos. ABSTRACT: The use of nitrogen (N) in pastoral ecosystems leads to increased productivity, as it allows the plant to elongate its leaves and, therefore, grazing herbivores harvest the green leaves. However, there are very volatile N sources, which can be replaced by ammonium nitrate, which is less volatile and less dependent on the application in rainy days. The treatments are compound of Marandu palisade grass pastures managed under continuous stocking at a canopy height of 25 cm, with different levels of N fertilizer: 0, 75, and 150 kg ha-1year-1, as ammonium nitrate (32% of N), with four replicates (pastures) in a completely randomized design. Resumo A prevenção de riscos e agravos à saúde dos trabalhadores nos hospitais deve ser foco dos gestores, pois contribui para a qualidade de vida no trabalho e a segurança do paciente. O objetivo deste artigo é compreender a atividade de prevenção de riscos e agravos à saúde dos trabalhadores no contexto hospitalar, a partir das contradições históricas e empíricas do sistema de atividade. Estudo qualitativo exploratório, ancorado na Teoria da Atividade Histórico-Cultural, desenvolvido em um hospital universitário do estado de São Paulo. Os dados foram coletados entre setembro de 2021 e janeiro de 2022 por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas com nove profissionais do Serviço Especializado em Engenharia de Segurança e Medicina do Trabalho e cinco gestores do hospital; 20 horas de observação de campo; e análise documental. Apesar da expansão do objeto da atividade de prevenção, os demais elementos do sistema de atividade não se adaptaram às novas exigências, evoluindo com incompatibilidades e contradições que comprometeram o alcance dos resultados esperados. As principais ações de resposta observadas ficaram centradas em adequações a exigências de itens de normas, como composição de equipe, exames médicos e outras que pouco atuam na promoção e proteção da saúde.

Abstract Hospital managers should target occupational risks and harm prevention since this can contribute to the quality of life at work and patient safety. This article aims to elucidate the activity of prevention of occupational risks and injuries in the hospital setting based on analysis of historical and empirical contradictions of the activity system. An exploratory qualitative study grounded in the Cultural-Historical Activity Theory was conducted at a university hospital in the state of São Paulo. Data were collected between September 2021 and January 2022 via individual semi-structured interviews of 9 professionals from the Occupational Health and Safety services and of five hospital managers, involving 20 hours of field observation and document analysis. Despite the expansion of the object of prevention activity, the other elements of the activity system did not adapt to the new demands, causing incompatibilities and contradictions that compromised the attainment of the expected outcomes. The main response actions observed were centered on complying with regulatory items, such as team composition, medical examinations and others, that contribute little toward promoting occupational health and safety.

Abstract The aim was to analyse and improve the Primary Health Care (PHC) response to domestic violence against women (DVAW) by developing, implementing and evaluating an intervention. A pilot study evaluating the before and after of intervention implementation, using mixed methods and carried out in three phases - formative, intervention and evaluation - between August 2017 and March 2019 in two Basic Health Units (UBS) in the city of São Paulo. In this paper, we present the details and evaluation of the intervention, carried out six to twelve months after its implementation. The intervention was developed based on the findings of the formative phase and in line with the health policy that establishes the Violence Prevention Nucleus (NPV) and consisted of stablishing a care pathway; general training for all workers and specific training for the NPV; drawing up educational material and monthly case discussions over 6 months. The evaluation showed acceptability among the workers, increased identification and repertoire for caring for cases of DVAW, strengthening internal referral and the intersectoral network. We identified obstacles to the full implementation and sustainability of the intervention.

Resumo O objetivo foi analisar e aprimorar a resposta da Atenção Primária à Saúde (APS) ao cuidado dos casos de violência doméstica contra a mulher (VDCM), desenvolvendo, implementando e avaliando uma intervenção. Pesquisa piloto de avaliação do antes e depois da implementação de uma intervenção, utilizando métodos mistos e realizada em três fases - linha de base, intervenção e avaliação - entre agosto/2017 e março/2019 em duas Unidades Básicas de Saúde (UBS) do Município de São Paulo. Apresentamos neste artigo o detalhamento e a avaliação da intervenção, realizada 6-12 meses após implementação. A intervenção foi desenvolvida com base nos achados da primeira fase e em consonância com a política de saúde que estabelece os Núcleos de Prevenção à Violência (NPV), consistindo em: elaboração de fluxo assistencial; capacitação geral para todos os trabalhadores e específica para o NPV; elaboração de material educativo e discussões mensais de caso durante 6 meses. A avaliação mostrou aceitabilidade entre os trabalhadores, aumentou a identificação e repertório para o cuidado dos casos de VDCM, fortalecendo o encaminhamento interno e à rede intersetorial. Identificamos obstáculos para plena implementação e sustentabilidade da intervenção.

However, information on short-term all-cause mortality and the factors associated with death in patients who survived the hospitalization period of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection is limited. We analyzed the six-month post-hospitalization mortality rate and possible risk factors of COVID-19 patients in a single center in Brazil. This is a retrospective cohort study focused on a six-month follow-up. The exclusion criteria were death during hospitalization, transference to another hospital, and age under 18. We collected data from the charts of all hospitalized patients from March 2020 to December 2020 with a positive RT-PCR test for SARS-CoV-2, resulting in a sample size of 106 patients. The main outcome was death after hospitalization, whereas comorbidities and demographics were evaluated as risk factors. The crude post-hospitalization death rate was 16%. The first 30 days of follow-up had the highest mortality rate. In a Cox regression model for post-hospitalization mortality, previous chronic kidney disease (HR, 4.06, 95%CI 1.46 – 11.30) and longer hospital stay (HR 1.01, 95%CI 1.00 – 1.02) were the only factors statistically associated with death. In conclusion, a high six-month all-cause mortality was observed. Within the six-month follow-up, a higher risk of death was observed for patients who had prior CKD and longer hospital stay. These findings highlight the importance of more intensive medical surveillance during this period. ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the antibiotic profile of microorganisms isolated from urine samples of patients with community urine tract infections (UTI) admitted to the University Hospital of the Federal University of Sao Carlos to support an appropriate local empirical treatment. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2018 to October 2020. Data from 1,528 positive urine cultures for bacterial pathogens and antibiograms were tabulated. Bacterial species prevalence and their resistance profile were analyzed and compared by sex and age. For Gram-negative fermenting bacteria, resistance rates were compared between patients with previous hospitalization and the total of infections caused by this group. For comparisons, the Chi-square test was performed, using Fisher’s exact test when necessary (BioEstat program, adopting p ≤ 0.05). A multivariate analysis was applied to assess the effect of the studied variables in predicting multidrug resistance. Infections were more prevalent in women and older adults. Gram-negative bacteria represented 90.44% of total cultures. In both sexes, E. coli prevalence was significantly higher in adults compared with older adults (p < 0.0001). For several antibiotics, resistance rates were higher in the older adults compared with other ages and in patients with Gram-negative fermenting infections and previous hospitalization compared with the total of infections by this group of bacteria. The closer to the hospitalization, the higher the number of antibiotics with superior resistance rates. Resistance rates for aminoglycosides, carbapenems, ceftazidime, nitrofurantoin, piperacillin+tazobactam, and fosfomycin were less than 20%, considered adequate for empirical treatment. Resumo A prevenção de riscos e agravos à saúde dos trabalhadores nos hospitais deve ser foco dos gestores, pois contribui para a qualidade de vida no trabalho e a segurança do paciente. O objetivo deste artigo é compreender a atividade de prevenção de riscos e agravos à saúde dos trabalhadores no contexto hospitalar, a partir das contradições históricas e empíricas do sistema de atividade. Estudo qualitativo exploratório, ancorado na Teoria da Atividade Histórico-Cultural, desenvolvido em um hospital universitário do estado de São Paulo. Os dados foram coletados entre setembro de 2021 e janeiro de 2022 por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas com nove profissionais do Serviço Especializado em Engenharia de Segurança e Medicina do Trabalho e cinco gestores do hospital; 20 horas de observação de campo; e análise documental. Apesar da expansão do objeto da atividade de prevenção, os demais elementos do sistema de atividade não se adaptaram às novas exigências, evoluindo com incompatibilidades e contradições que comprometeram o alcance dos resultados esperados. Abstract Hospital managers should target occupational risks and harm prevention since this can contribute to the quality of life at work and patient safety. This article aims to elucidate the activity of prevention of occupational risks and injuries in the hospital setting based on analysis of historical and empirical contradictions of the activity system. An exploratory qualitative study grounded in the Cultural-Historical Activity Theory was conducted at a university hospital in the state of São Paulo. Data were collected between September 2021 and January 2022 via individual semi-structured interviews of 9 professionals from the Occupational Health and Safety services and of five hospital managers, involving 20 hours of field observation and document analysis. Despite the expansion of the object of prevention activity, the other elements of the activity system did not adapt to the new demands, causing incompatibilities and contradictions that compromised the attainment of the expected outcomes.
