ABSTRACT: This research described corneal maps and anterior-segment tomographic images of young mixed breed cats and compared them to those described in humans. The exams of 13 mixed-breed cats (25 eyes) aged between 18 and 48 months were analyzed. The following maps provided by the Galilei G4 were analyzed qualitatively: axial and instantaneous curvature, pachymetry, total corneal power and best fit sphere (BFS) and best fit toric asphere (BFTA) elevation. Furthermore, anterior and posterior axial and instantaneous curvatures, total corneal power and pachymetry values were analyzed in addition to anterior segment tomography images. The topography maps described the central region of the cats’ cornea. Anterior and posterior axial curvature maps were uniformly flat. Instantaneous anterior curvature map was aspheric. A ring in a shape similar to a donut was observed in the posterior instantaneous curvature map. No patterns were observed in the elevation maps. Total corneal power maps tended to monofocality and eleven maps presented a regressive multifocal triangle in the inferior region. The pachymetry map was uniform and pachymetry among the corneal zones did not differ statistically. The anterior chamber was deep with a wide angle that narrows close to the periphery; the anterior and posterior corneal surfaces and the anterior surface of the lens tended to be parallel. Young mixed breed cats’ corneal maps and anterior segment tomographic images differed from those described in humans. The center of the cat’s cornea was flatter, spherical, uniformly thick and tended to monofocality. Anterior and posterior corneal surfaces and the anterior surface of the lens tended to be parallel. ABSTRACT: In general, allelopathy can be defined as a biological process by which an organism produces one or more metabolites that can change the germination, growth, survival, and reproduction of other organisms, and thus influencing the stability of agroecosystems. Cholesterol is a very abundant sterol isolated from the marine red alga Plocamium brasiliense that has been studied regarding its potential inhibitory effects on seed germination, radicle elongation, and hypocotyl development of the weeds Mimosa pudica (malicia) and Senna obtusifolia (mata-pasto). Cholesterol was isolated from a hexane extract by chromatographic methods. Over a 15-day period, germination bioassays were performed at 25 ºC with a 12-h photoperiod. Radicle elongation and hypocotyl development were assayed at 25 ºC with a 24-h photoperiod. Later, Petri dishes 9.0 cm in diameter were coated with filter paper, and 25 seeds were placed in a germination chamber. Six pre-germinated seeds were placed in the Petri dish for 2-3 days. After 10 days, radicle and hypocotyl extensions were measured, and the inhibitory potential of cholesterol was assessed at 5, 10, 15, and 20 ppm. In both herbs, M. pudica and S. obtusifolia, they were significantly affected by the action of cholesterol, achieving higher percentages of inhibition in seed germination (50% and 33%, respectively), radical germination (68% and 60%, respectively), and hypocotyl development (66% and 55%, respectively). The inhibition effects were dose-dependent in all experiments, having more pronounced allelopathic effects at 20ppm.
Abstract Senecio bonariensis is a plant native to South American wetlands. This plant has ecological importance, is used in traditional medicine, and is also popular for ornamental purposes. This study aimed to develop the first in vitro propagation protocol for S. bonariensis. Leaf explants were disinfected and placed on Murashige and Skoog (MS) agar medium supplemented with different combinations of growth regulators. We tested the effect of two different cytokinins: Kinetin (KIN) and 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), in the presence of the auxin α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). All treatments with KIN resulted in root production, but only treatments with BAP induced shoot formation. As results, we determined the optimal concentration for maximum shoot production, achieving a 100% success in rustication while finding similar physiological traits among micro-propagated and wild-type plants. In conclusion, we developed a protocol for the large-scale production of S. bonariensis plants, providing an alternative source of bioactive compounds for medical and pharmaceutical purposes while preserving the natural habitat of this native plant.

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82. Abstract Dental associations worldwide recommend that the first dental visit should take place before 12 months of age; however, preschoolers’ utilization of dental services remains low. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of, and factors associated with, dental services utilization among children aged 1 to 3 years. This was a cross-sectional study carried out in the city of Diamantina, MG, Brazil, and involved a sample of 308 child-mother pairs. Mothers completed a questionnaire addressing sociodemographic and economic aspects of the family and characteristics pertaining to their child’s oral health. The clinical assessment of the children included dental caries, trauma, malocclusion, and mucosal changes. Analysis of the data comprised statistical description, application of the chi-square test, and Poisson’s regression analysis. Among the children studied, 39.6% had attended at least one dental visit in their lifetime. Children whose families had a greater number of members relying on the family’s income (PR = 1.40, 95%CI:1.04 –1.89, p = 0.028) and those with moderate/extensive dental caries (Codes 3-6 of the ICDAS; PR = 1.44, 95%CI: 1.08 –1.93, p = 0.014) exhibited a higher prevalence of dental services utilization. In conclusion, the prevalence of dental services utilization among children aged 1 to 3 years was low, and was associated with a greater number of family members relying on the family’s income, and with the occurrence of moderate/extensive dental caries. age however preschoolers low crosssectional cross sectional Diamantina MG Brazil 30 childmother child mother pairs childs s health trauma malocclusion changes description chisquare chi square test Poissons Poisson analysis studied 396 39 6 39.6 lifetime familys 140 40 1.40 95%CI1.04 95CI104 CI 95%CI 1.04 95 04 95%CI:1.0 189 89 –1.89 0.028 0028 0 028 moderateextensive moderate extensive Codes 36 3- ICDAS 144 44 1.44 95CI 108 08 1.0 193 93 –1.93 0.014 0014 014 conclusion 39. 14 4 1.4 CI1 95%CI1.0 95CI10 104 9 95%CI:1. 18 8 –1.8 0.02 002 02 10 1. 19 –1.9 0.01 001 01 95%CI1. 95CI1 95%CI:1 –1. 0.0 00 95%CI1 –1 0. –

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is an association between hair cortisol concentrations and acute stress symptoms in family members of critically ill patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in an adult intensive care unit of a tertiary hospital in Porto Alegre, Brazil, from August 2021 to February 2022. Family members of intensive care unit patients admitted for more than 10 days were approached for enrollment. We collected sociodemographic data and assessed resilience, religiosity, and symptoms of acute stress among family members. Samples of family members’ hair were collected shortly after the interview to measure the hair cortisol concentration. Results: A total of 110 family members were included in this study. Eighty-eight (80.0%) family members presented with symptoms of acute stress. The median hair cortisol concentration was 2.37pg/mg (1.16 - 5.06pg/mg). There was no significant difference in hair cortisol concentration between family members with and without acute stress symptoms (p = 0.419). According to the multivariate analysis, only the fact that the patient was alert at the time of the family member's interview was significantly associated with the prevalence of acute stress symptoms in the family member. Conclusion: We did not find an association between the hair cortisol concentration of family members in hair segments in the months prior to admission to the intensive care unit and the occurrence of acute stress symptoms. Abstract Sjogren’s disease (SjD) is an autoimmune disease that is characterized not only by the sicca symptoms it causes but also by its systemic nature, which is capable of several and not yet fully understood extraglandular manifestations. To gain a clearer understanding of these manifestations as well as a better practical approach, a panel of experts from the Brazilian Society of Rheumatology conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the identification of epidemiologic and clinical features of the extraglandular manifestations present in ESSDAI (EULAR Sjogren´s syndrome disease activity index), followed by a voting panel with recommendations for clinical practice. This publication is complementary to others already published and covers cutaneous and hematological manifestations, with prevalence data generated by a meta-analysis of 13 clinical or laboratory manifestations and 6 clinical management recommendations. Abstract This work proposes a new tactile sensing system for biometric authentication. The system operates based on the response of multiplexed optical fiber macro-bend sensors to plantar pressure. The setup contains a set of 6 in-series sensors installed in holes drilled in a foot-shaped slab of Polymethyl Methacrylate. Each sensor is a loop of standard single-mode telecommunication fiber with 2.5 mm radius, encapsulated with silicone elastomer. The instrumentation required for interrogation includes only a broadband visible light source and a ultraviolet-visible spectrometer. Personal authentication is based on recognizing the unique pattern of pressures applied by the person’s foot in the metatarsal, outside of the foot arch, and heel areas monitored by the 6 sensors. The light spectrum transmitted by the set of multiplexed sensors in the spectral range from 400 nm to 800 nm carries information about the magnitude of the pressure applied on each sensor by the foot. The distribution of pressures exerted by different individuals alters the geometry of the macro-bends, resulting in spectral changes in transmitted light that allow personal authentication. Principal component analysis and support vector machine method are responsible for foot recognition. Data analysis returned hit rates greater than 85% for 6 different feet. macrobend macro bend inseries series footshaped shaped Methacrylate singlemode single mode 25 2 5 2. radius elastomer ultravioletvisible ultraviolet spectrometer persons person s metatarsal arch 40 80 macrobends, macrobends bends, bends macro-bends recognition 85 feet 4 8

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The hospitals’ volume, specialization, availability of all oncological services, and experience in performing complex surgeries have a favorable impact on gastric cancer (GC) treatment. AIMS: The aim of this study was to compare the results of GC treatment according to the type of oncological hospital in the State of São Paulo. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with GC between 2000 and 2022 in qualified hospitals for cancer treatment were evaluated by data extracted from the hospital cancer registry. Patients were assessed according to the type of hospital for cancer treatment: Oncology High Complexity Assistance Unit (UNACON) and Oncology High Complexity Care Center (CACON), which has greater complexity. RESULTS: Among the 33,774 patients, 23,387 (69.2%) were treated at CACONs and 10,387 (30.8%) in UNACONs. CACON patients were younger, had a higher level of education, and had a more advanced cTNM stage compared to UNACON (all p<0.001, p<0.05). The time from diagnosis to treatment was over 60 days in 49.8% of CACON’s patients and 39.4% of UNACON’s (p<0.001, p<0.05). Surgical treatment was performed in 18,314 (54.2%) patients. The frequency pN0 (40.3 vs 32.4%) and pTNM stage I (23 vs 19.5%) were higher in CACON. There was no difference in overall survival (OS) between all adenocarcinoma cases treated at CACON and UNACON (9.3 vs 10.3 months, p=0.462, p>0.05). However, considering only patients who underwent curative surgery, the OS of patients treated at CACON was better (24.4 vs 18 months, p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with GC who underwent gastrectomy at CACONs had better survival outcomes, suggesting that the centralization of complex cancer surgery may be beneficial. ABSTRACT This article analyses the validity evidence based on the internal structure and reliability of the 12-item Herth Hope Index in a sample of 1255 inhabitants of the city of Arequipa (46.3% men and 53.7% women), located in the south of Peru. Five models were tested by confirmatory factor analysis and, based on the results, comparisons were made according to sex and age. The results suggest a two-factor structure similar to that reported in a sample from Lima. These factors are Optimism and Agencies. Regarding reliability, the first factor obtained adequate levels of internal consistency through McDonald's Omega test and Cronbach's Alpha test; while the second factor obtained low but acceptable levels of reliability with both tests. Likewise, no gender differences were recorded, although there were differences with respect to age in the agency dimension, given the results of low reliability in this dimension, it is suggested to take these results with caution.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that, although typically develop in the visceral pleura, occasionally occur in the intracranial cavity. Furthermore, they are characterized by high rates of metastasis and recurrence. Case Report: We present the case of a 59-year-old male patient with a 3-month history of headache and bradyphrenia. Computed tomography revealed a neoformative tumor infiltrating the nasal cavity, ethmoid sinuses, and anterior cranial fossa, involving the left frontal lobe. The patient underwent two exploratory craniectomies, during which diagnoses suggestive of high-grade glial neoplasia and SFT were made. For precise diagnosis, immunohistochemistry was performed, which was consistent with solitary fibrous tumor. The case is analyzed, focusing particularly on histopathological aspects, the unusual location of this tumor, and its variable clinical manifestations.

ABSTRACT Universities have a duty to take the lead in promoting oral health through creative educational and cultural approaches. It is essential to encourage responsible behaviors among young people and their environment by providing information on the importance of oral hygiene and proper dental care. By establishing a culture of prevention and self-care, quality of life can be improved, and long-term dental problems can be prevented, generating a positive impact on society. The aim of this study is to investigate the strength, size, position and use of elastics in orthodontics, as well as to analyze their application during treatment in university dental clinics. It focuses on understanding and evaluating the management of these elastics in the clinical context, especially in the practices performed by professionals in training within university institutions. To achieve this, a review of the literature was carried out by searching electronic databases, using keywords combined with Boolean operators and following the PRISMA methodological criteria. It has been concluded that elastics present a level of force relaxation in the first 24 hours of extension, and it is possible to estimate the extension required to reach the optimum force using the "3" rule of thumb.

ABSTRACT This review focuses on the effects and mechanisms of action of amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) and their adverse effects on the cardiovascular, nervous, and immune systems. ATS include amphetamine (AMPH), methamphetamine (METH, "crystalmeth," or "ice"), methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, "ecstasy," or "Molly"), MDMA derivatives (e.g., methylenedioxyamphetamine [MDA] and methylenedioxy-N-ethylamphetamine [MDEA]), khat, and synthetic cathinones. The first section of this paper presents an overview of the historical aspects of ATS use, their initial clinical use, and regulations. The second part reviews the acute and chronic impact and the most salient clinical effects of ATS on the central nervous and cardiovascular systems, skin, and mouth. The chemical structure, pharmacokinetics, and classic and non-canonical pharmacological actions are covered in the third section, briefly explaining the mechanisms involved. In addition, the interactions of ATS with the central and peripheral immune systems are reviewed. The last section presents data about the syndemic of ATS and opioid use in the North American region, focusing on the increasing adulteration of METH with fentanyl.

ABSTRACT This text discusses the political and epistemological gains arising from the partnership between historians, social movements, organizations, and communities in the discussion of the theme of the contemporary energy and environmental crisis. We discuss some categories and hypotheses put forward by these political subjects related to the ways in which water resources were captured by the market economy and the solutions to the current energy crisis based on agrofuels. Finally, we argue that historiography, when resuming its place in the public space, must be on the side of those who have been fighting, for at least five decades, against ecocide and epistemicide, and betting for life. historians movements organizations agrofuels Finally historiography space fighting decades epistemicide life
