Abstract: The chicozapote is an introduced species in the state of Nayarit, and given that, the dissemination of species outside of their originary region contributes to species diversification, this research was conducted with the purpose of knowing the morphologic variability of chicozapote trees of Nayarit, México and identifying outstanding materials for fruit production. Field trips around the State were carried out, and 55 trees were located and characterized. Morphologic and agronomic variables were registered. The data analysis used descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, principal components analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis. Morphological variability is present in chicozapote materials of Nayarit. In the analysis of principal components, the first three components explained 79.13% of the total morphological variability, and the variables that determined it were: equatorial and longitudinal fruit diameter, weight of fruit and pulp, width of leaf and weight of seed. The cluster analysis differentiated five groups, and inside of the groups, variability that allowed differentiating subgroups was present. The groups were not separated by municipality in the dendrogram. Morphological variability exists among the chicozapote materials of Nayarit. Some of the materials identified have potential to be used for fruit production, thick shell, long post-harvest life and seedless fruits that could be evaluated for organoleptic properties. The trees that produce parthenocarpic fruit could be used for studies about the reproductive biology of chicozapote.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Gadolinium (Gd) blocks intra- and extracellular ATP hydrolysis. We determined whether Gd affects vascular reactivity to contractile responses to phenylephrine (PHE) by blocking aortic ectonucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase (E-NTPDase). Wistar rats of both sexes (260-300 g, 23 females, 7 males) were used. Experiments were performed before and after incubation of aortic rings with 3 µM Gd. Concentration-response curves to PHE (0.1 nM to 0.1 mM) were obtained in the presence and absence of endothelium, after incubation with 100 µM L-NAME, 10 µM losartan, or 10 µM enalaprilat. Gd significantly increased the maximum response (control: 72.3 ± 3.5; Gd: 101.3 ± 6.4%) and sensitivity (control: 6.6 ± 0.1; Gd: 10.5 ± 2.8%) to PHE. To investigate the blockade of E-NTDase activity by Gd, we added 1 mM ATP to the bath. ATP reduced smooth muscle tension and Gd increased its relaxing effect (control: -33.5 ± 4.1; Gd: -47.4 ± 4.1%). Endothelial damage abolished the effect of Gd on the contractile responses to PHE (control: 132.6 ± 8.6; Gd: 122.4 ± 7.1%). L-NAME + Gd in the presence of endothelium reduced PHE contractile responses (control/L-NAME: 151.1 ± 28.8; L-NAME + Gd: 67.9 ± 19% AUC). ATP hydrolysis was reduced after Gd administration, which led to ATP accumulation in the nutrient solution and reduced ADP concentration, while adenosine levels remained the same. Incubation with Gd plus losartan and enalaprilat eliminated the pressor effects of Gd. Gd increased vascular reactivity to PHE regardless of the reduction of E-NTPDase activity and adenosine production. Moreover, the increased reactivity to PHE promoted by Gd was endothelium-dependent, reducing NO bioavailability and involving an increased stimulation of angiotensin-converting enzyme and angiotensin II AT1 receptors.

The effects of cutting age of triticale (X Triticosecale Wittimack) on its nutritional value, fermentation patterns, and quality of its silage were evaluated in a completely randomized design with four replications. Cutting ages were 83, 90, 97, 104, 111, and 118 days after sowing. There was an increase of 0.26 and a decrease of 0.12 percent unit on dry matter and crude protein contents, respectively, for each additional day in the cutting age. The highest values of dry matter were observed in plants cut at 104 and 118 days. It was observed a 0.03 percent unit decrease in the silage pH for each additional day in the cutting age. The lowest pH values and the lowest ammoniacal nitrogen concentration were observed from 97 to 118 days. The in situ ruminal degradation parameters of fresh forage ranged from 82.2 to 91.7% (potential degradability), from 1.9 to 3.3%/h (degradation rate), and from 40.5 to 52.9% (effective degradability under 5%/h of passage rate). When triticale was growth under irrigation in Zona da Mata during the winter and cut for silage, the best fermentation was observed at the plant ages of 104 and 111 days. At the age of 83 days, the plants showed good nutritional value to be grazed or fed as fresh cut to the animals.

The secretion of bacterial virulence factors and flagellar components requires the assistance of specific type III and flagellar chaperones. Standard computational annotation of the genome of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv citri, a plant pathogen that causes citrus canker, initially did not identify any genes belonging to these chaperone categories since the primary sequence homology between them was very low. However, in a search for hypothetical proteins with characteristics similar to these chaperones, we have now identified 30 chromosomal and 10 plasmidial potential genes encoding chaperones belonging to types III/IV, and flagellar secretion systems in this organism. The significance of these findings is discussed.

Twenty three infants with neonatal seizures were followed prospectively to a mean age of 11 months. Only 2 were pre-term and birth weight ranged from 1700 to 4230 grams, with 17 male and 6 female infants. Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy was the most common etiology (82.6%). Focal clonic convulsions were the predominant seizure type, present in 7/16 infants in which the seizure type could be identified. All infants had a neurological examination and EEC, and 18 had a cranial ultrasonography performed at the follow-up. Anticonvulsant medication was discontinued, if follow-up EEG and neurological examination were normal. At the follow-up, seizure recurrence was observed in 7/23 (30%) infants. Abnormal EEG, neurological examination and cranial ultrasonography were statistically correlated with seizure recurrence. We conclude that infants with neonatal seizures can remain free of anticonvulsant medication provided they have normal neurological examination, EEG and cranial ultrasonography.
