This study investigated the removal of contaminants in water by adsorption on thermoplastic starch (TPS) and kraft lignin (KL) composites. A study on the desorption of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) dyes in water was also carried out, followed by the photodegradation of solutions containing dissolved dyes. Initially, the surface morphology of the TPS and TPS-KL films was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, revealing advantageous characteristics for efficient adsorption of contaminants. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis made it possible to characterize the TPS and TPS-KL composites. The results demonstrate the reversibility of the process and confirm the lack of permanent chemical modification in the polymer matrix, indicating that the adsorption/desorption process is physical rather than chemical. This suggests that the adsorbent material can be reused without losing its fundamental structural properties. Furthermore, the study allows for verification of the chemical changes on the surfaces of the materials involved. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) results show that for MO, both substrates exhibited low adsorption capacity, with efficiency values close to 20%. In contrast, for MB, both composite materials displayed excellent dye adsorption rates, achieving efficiencies of 78% or higher. The photodegradation of adsorbed dyes revealed promising results. Complex oxides can present interesting semiconductor properties since the simultaneous presence of different metallic cations can modulate the conduction and valence band edges, affecting the bandgap energy, the onset potential for reactions and also the photocatalyst long-term stability. Here, we demonstrated that the synthesis of multinary oxides, very challenging using “traditional” methodologies, can be fast achieved by melting the precursor binary oxides in an arc furnace. As a proof of concept, arc-melting a mixture of Bi2O3 and V2O5 (Bi:V molar ratio of 1:1.05) resulted in almost pristine BiVO4 (97.3% from Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction (XRD) data); photoelectrochemical (PEC) measurements indicated a promising application as a photoanode for O2 evolution reaction. Conversely, the arc-melting of Bi2O3 and WO3 mixture (Bi:W molar ratio of 2:1.15) resulted in the biphasic Bi2WO6/Bi2W2O9; preliminary PEC analysis revealed characteristics of n-type semiconductor electrode with photoactivity under UV irradiation. Finally, the hierarchical Ag@α-AgVO3/Fe2O3 consisted of micrometric Fe2O3 particles decorated by AgVO3 nanoribbons and Ag nanoparticles, was obtained from melting Ag2O, Fe2O3 and V2O5 as precursors (Ag:Fe:V molar ratio of 3:1:2); PEC measurements also revealed possible application as a photoanode. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. Abstract The Santos Basin (SB) is the main petroliferous basin in the Brazilian continental margin and one of the most studied marine areas in Brazil. However, historical data suggest that new efforts should be carried out to acquire quantitative biological data, especially in the deep sea, to establish the baseline of essential ocean variables in different ecosystems for future monitoring programs. The Brazilian energy company Petrobras planned and executed 24 oceanographic cruises over a period of 2 years to assess the benthic (SANSED cruise) and pelagic (SANAGU cruise) systems of the SB (356 days at sea in 2019 and 2021/2022). These efforts were part of the Santos Project, which comprised a comprehensive environmental study aimed at investigating benthic and pelagic variables to characterize ecology, biogeochemistry, thermohaline properties of water masses, and ocean circulation patterns, geomorphology, and sedimentology, as well as organic and inorganic chemistry. Here we present the detailed sampling designs and the field methods employed on board, during the SB scientific cruises. All sampling protocols were based on standardized approaches. For the benthos analyses, triplicate sediment samples were performed using a GOMEX-type box corer (0.25 m²) or a large modified Van Veen grab (0.75 m²) at 100 stations ranging from 25 to 2400 m depth. At each station, 25 geochemical and physico-chemical parameters were analyzed in addition to micro-, meio-, and macrofauna and living foraminifera samples. For the pelagic system, 60 stations were selected to investigate the plankton community, ranging in size from pico- to macroplankton, through vertical, horizontal, and oblique net hauls (20, 200, and 500 μm mesh size), as well as 25 biogeochemical parameters collected with an aid of a CTD-rosette sampler. Part of this scientific information also serves the Regional Environmental Characterization Project (PCR-BS) in support of Petrobras’ Santos Basin drilling licensing process led by the Brazilian Environmental Agency – IBAMA. This project contributes to the sustainable development of the SB, in line with the guidelines of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Abstract Health professionals working to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic are one of the main risk groups for the disease, being prioritized for vaccination. Considering this, the aim of this study was to analyze the immune response of these professionals immunized with CoronaVac in the first and second doses. Blood samples were collected after the first and second doses of the vaccine (CoronaVac) and used to investigate hematological and biochemical parameters, analysis of immunoglobulin production, cytokines, and gene expression profile, as well as the identification of subsets of immune cells. Post-first dose immunological phenotypic memory (CD27+) profiles (T CD4+, TCD8+ and CD19+) showed a significant increase, as did Monocyte APCs (CD80+HLA-DR+) in relation to the second dose. The cytokines IL-2, IL-6 and IFN-° showed increased values in relation to the other analyzed cytokines. The Th2/Th17 profile in the second dose was characterized by gene expression analysis. The production of IgM and IgG after vaccination showed statistically significant values in the comparison between doses. CoronaVac showed activation of APCs monocytes, memory response of T and B lymphocytes, with immunoglobulins production. This set of responses is characterized by the Th2/Th17 immunological profile.

RESUMO A prática da utilização de malhas de diferentes colorações, associada à técnica de fertirrigação, representa um novo conceito agrotecnológico que visa promover respostas fisiológicas específicas ao crescimento e à produção que são reguladas pela luz. Neste sentido, o objetivo da pesquisa foi avaliar o efeito, em cultivo protegido, de malhas fotoconversoras e de concentrações de potássio na solução de fertirrigação sobre o desempenho horticultural da Costus lasius. A pesquisa foi conduzida na Universidade de São Paulo, ESALQ, Piracicaba, SP. Foram realizados três experimentos separadamente, para avaliar cinco concentrações de potássio na solução de fertirrigação (40, 80, 120, 160 e 200 mg L-1) em três colorações de malhas fotoconversoras (vermelha, azul e preta), no delineamento em blocos casualizados com cinco repetições. Foram avaliadas as variáveis altura de planta, número de folhas, caules e botões de flores. Os dados foram submetidos à análise conjunta de experimentos. A associação entre a concentração de 200 mg L-1 de K+ e a malha fotoconversora de cor preta resultou em maior produção de hastes e inflorescências.
ABSTRACT The practice of using different photo-selective nets, associated with the technique of fertigation, represents a new agrotechnological concept that aims to promote specific physiological responses for growth and production, which are regulated by light. The aims of the study were to evaluate the effect of photo-selective nets and potassium concentrations in the fertigation solution on the horticultural performance of Costus lasius. The study was conducted at the Universidade de São Paulo, ESALQ, Piracicaba, SP, Brazil. Three experiments were carried out separately to evaluate five potassium concentrations in the fertigation solution (40, 80, 120, 160 and 200 mg L-1) under three colours of photo-selective nets (red, blue and black) in a randomized block design, with five repetitions. The variables plant height and numbers of leaves, stems and flower buds were evaluated. The data were submitted to the joint analysis of experiments. The association between the K+ concentration of 200 mg L-1 and the black photo-selective net results in higher stem and inflorescence production.

The present work aims at studying the preconcentration of Cu2+ ions by solid phase extraction using SiO2/Al2O3/TiO2 ternary oxide as adsorbent material. This methodology consists of the affinity of the analyte for the adsorbent material and its subsequent elution with the least amount of solvent. Subsequently, the aqueous phase containing the extracted analyte was collected and analyzed by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SW-ASV). For the applied solid phase extraction (SPE) methodology, a complete factorial design was carried out with 3 variables at 2 levels (pH, elution flow rate and analyte concentration) to optimize the extraction conditions. The results showed that at pH 9, the SiO2/Al2O3/TiO2 oxide presents excellent Cu2+ adsorption capacity with recovery values between 81.0 and 104% for this pH range. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) values were determined to be 1.71 and 5.64 µg L-1, respectively. The study of recovery for SPE method revealed results of 102 and 103%.

This article reports a novel virtual screening algorithm seeking the rational identification of novel lead anticoagulants. Seven 5-(3-methyl-1-aryl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)-1H-tetrazoles and seven novel 1-aryl-4-(4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl)-3-methyl-1H-pyrazoles were obtained in three steps starting from arylhydrazine hydrochlorides as raw materials in good yields: 50-72% and 50-85%, respectively. All compounds were submitted to an in silico target-base pipeline named integrated multiplex analysis virtual screening (IMA-VS), which comprises the evaluation of their (i) fitting physicochemical properties to the chemical environment of the target enzyme; (ii) active-site homing electrostatic potential to the target enzyme; (iii) structural fitting to the target active site through molecular docking; and (iv) overall absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity (ADMET) profile. After the virtual selection of potential anticoagulant hits, all molecules were synthesized and candidates were evaluated in vitro for their anticoagulant and hemolytic profile. The most promising candidate pointed out by IMA-VS was compound 1-(3',4'-dichlorophenyl)-4-(4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl)-3-methyl-1H-pyrazole that shown to display factor Xa (FXa)-specific inhibitory activity in vitro, acting as an uncompetitive inhibitor with an inhibition constant (Ki) = 61.16 ± 12.96 µM, in addition to the lowest hemolytic activity of the series. Further experiments revealed the antithrombotic activity of this compound in an in vivo model of arterial thrombosis induced by FeCl3.

This work performs an exploratory analysis of the sparkling wines from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Samples of traditional sparkling wine and Moscatel sparkling wine were analyzed and chemometrics tools were applied to physicochemical, gas chromatography and stable carbon isotope analysis. The carbon isotope ratio (δ13C-CO2) of the samples presents great heterogeneity and confirm that the isotopic signature of the CO2 could be derived from the fermentation of C4 sugar. The principal component analysis (PCA) was capable to discriminate and classify the samples in their respective groups and combined data approach was especially important to identify the correlation between the studied variables. With the increasing production of sparkling wines in Brazil, this work helps to evaluate the standards of the local sparkling wines.

RESUMO Introdução: Helicobacter pylori é uma bactéria encontrada nas células epiteliais do trato gastrointestinal humano. Sua infecção relaciona-se com diferentes patologias, como gastrite crônica, úlcera péptica, linfoma gástrico e adenocarcinoma. A infecção por Helicobacter pylori está presente em mais da metade da população mundial. Objetivos: Detectar a presença de H. pylori e comparar os métodos diagnósticos do teste rápido de urease (TRU) e reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR). Materiais e métodos: No estudo, realizado entre abril e julho de 2015, três biópsias foram coletadas de cada paciente. Duas foram usadas para realizar PCR e uma, para TRU. Resultados: Oitenta e cinco amostras foram coletadas dos pacientes por meio de endoscopia, sendo 56 (65,88%) mulheres e 29 (34,11%) homens. Do total dos indivíduos sujeitos ao TRU, 15 (17,64%) foram positivos e 70 (82,35%), negativos. Na PCR, na detecção do gene 16S ácido ribonucleico ribossômico (rRNA) de H. pylori, 66 (77,64%) apresentaram resultados positivos e 19 (22,35%), negativos. Para a análise da presença do gene UreA em todas as amostras, resultados positivos foram encontrados em 70 (82,35%) e negativos em 15 (17,64%). De acordo com os resultados, o TRU e o teste molecular apresentaram diferenças estatísticas. Conclusão: A PCR é um método útil na rotina laboratorial para detectar H. pylori em tecido de estômago devido à sua alta sensibilidade e especificidade, mas é necessária maior atenção na análise e na padronização.
ABSTRACT Introduction: Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium found in human epithelial cells of the gastrointestinal tract. Its infection is related to different diseases, such as chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, gastric lymphoma and adenocarcinoma. The infection by H. pylori is present in more than a half of the world population. Objectives: To detect H. pylori and to compare the diagnostic methods of the rapid urease test (RUT) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Materials and methods: The study was conducted between April and July, 2015. For such, three biopsies were collected from each patient. Two were used for PCR and one for RUT. Results: A total of 85 samples were collected from patients undergoing endoscopy, with 56 (65.88%) females and 29 (34.11%) males. From the total samples subjected to RUT, 15 (17.64%) were positive and 70 (82.35%), negative. In PCR for detection of gene 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) of H. pylori, 66 (77.64%) presented positive results and 19 (22.35%), negative results. For the analysis of the presence of UreA gene in all samples, positive results were found in 70 (82.35%), and negative in 15 (17.64%). According to the results, RUT and the molecular test presented statistical difference. Conclusion: PCR is a useful method in the laboratorial routine to detect the presence of H. pylori in the stomach tissue, due to high sensitivity and specificity, but it requires a more careful analysis and standardization.

Resumo: O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever o desenvolvimento do esqueleto do punaré (Thrichomys laurentinus). Para tanto, foram utilizados 11 embriões e 12 fetos em diferentes estágios de desenvolvimento, sendo divididos em 4 grupos de acordo com o período gestacional. As amostras foram obtidas no Centro de Multiplicação de Animais Silvestres da Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido, Mossoró-RN, Brasil. Após fixados em formol (10%) ou glutaraldeído (2,5%), foi realizada a analise morfológica com auxílio de lupa, sendo as características macroscópicas fotodocumentadas. Análises de raios-x e coloração por alizarina red foram realizadas para melhor compreensão do desenvolvimento ósseo. Nas análises de raio-x os embriões não apresentaram nenhuma radiopacidade, ao contrário dos fetos que apresentavam radiopacidade gradual ao longo dos grupos. No grupo II houve aumento de radiopacidade na região da coluna vertebral e das regiões mandibular e maxilar. No grupo III a radiopacidade estava aumentada nos membros pélvicos, nas costelas e na região frontal e no grupo IV nos membros torácicos e nas regiões occipital, temporal e frontal do crânio. Tais características foram confirmadas pelas analises histológicas e pela técnica de Alizarina Red. Com isso podemos concluir que o conhecimento acerca da embriologia do sistema ósseo normal é fundamental para o entendimento dos efeitos adversos causados pela nutrição e uso de drogas durante o desenvolvimento.
Abstract: The aim of this study was to describe the skeletogenesis in punaré (Thrichomys laurentinus). We used 11 embryos and 12 fetuses in different stages of development, allocated into 4 groups. Samples were obtained from the Multiplication Center of Wild Animals, at Federal Rural University of the Semi-Arid, Mossoro/RN, Brazil. After fixed in formalin (10%) or glutaraldehyde (2.5%) the morphological analysis was performed with a magnifying glass, and the macroscopic characteristics were photographed. Analysis of X-rays and alizarin red staining was made to better understand the development of bone structures. In x-ray analysis, it was possible to verify that the embryos showed no radiopacity, unlike fetuses that had gradual radiopacity along of the groups. In group II, there was an increase in radiopacity in the spine, mandibular and maxillary regions. In group III, the radiopacity was increased in the hind limbs, ribs and in the frontal region, and group IV showed higher radiopacity in the thoracic limbs and occipital, temporal and frontal skull. These characteristics were confirmed by histological and alizarin red analysis. We concluded that the knowledge of normal skeletal embryology is critical for understanding of adverse effects caused by nutrition and use of drugs during the development.

AbstractEvening primrose (Oenothera biennis L., Onagraceae) seeds oil has great economic importance due to its wide industrial application, mainly for medicines and nutraceutics. However, to our knowledge, it remains almost unexplored regarding development of innovative formulations, such as nanoemulsions. On the present study, required Hydroprophile–Lipophile Balance of evening primrose seeds oil was determined (HLB 12) and a stable nanoemulsion (Day 1: mean droplet size: 214.3 ± 0.69 nm, polydispersity index: 0.253 ± 0.012. Day 7: mean droplet size: 202.8 ± 0.23 nm, polydispersity index: 0.231 ± 0.008) was achieved. Moreover, pseudo-ternary diagram allowed delimitation of nanoemulsion region, contributing to nanobiotechnology of natural products.

O tempero alho e sal é amplamente utilizado na culinária brasileira, mas possui um alto teor de sódio. Como a alta ingestão de sódio tem sido fortemente correlacionada com a incidência de doenças crônicas, este estudo teve como objetivo desenvolver um tempero alho e sal com teor de sódio reduzido. A avaliação sensorial dos temperos foi conduzida através da aplicação dos mesmos ao arroz cozido. Primeiramente, a concentração ótima de tempero adicionado durante a preparação do arroz foi determinada. Subseqüentemente, temperos (3:1) foram preparadas contendo 0%, 50% e 25% de redução de NaCl, utilizando uma mistura de sais contendo KCl e glutamato monossódico. Um tempero com 0% de redução de NaCl foi estabelecido como controle. Três formulações de arroz elaboradas com os diferentes temperos foram avaliadas pelo teste de aceitação sensorial, tempo-intensidade e domínio temporal das sensações. As proporções de sais utilizadas no tempero alho e sal não geraram gostos estranhos ou ruins aos produtos, mas surtiram em produtos menos salgados. No entanto, os temperos com níveis mais baixos de sódio (F2 e F3) foram melhor aceitos em comparação ao tempero tradicional (F1). Portanto, uma mistura de NaCl , KCl e glutamato monossódico é uma alternativa viável para desenvolver um tempero alho e sal com reduzido teor de sódio.
Garlic and salt spice is widely used in Brazilian cookery, but it has a high sodium content; as high sodium intake has been strongly correlated to the incidence of chronic diseases. This study aimed to develop a garlic and salt spice with reduced sodium intake. Sensory evaluation was conducted by applying the spices to cooked rice. First, the optimal concentration of spice added during rice preparation was determined. Subsequently, seasonings (3:1) were prepared containing 0%, 50% and 25% less NaCl using a mixture of salts consisting of KCl and monosodium glutamate; a seasoning with a 0% NaCl reduction was established as a control. Three formulations of rice with different spices were assessed according to sensory testing acceptance, time-intensity and temporal domain of sensations. The proportions of salts used in the garlic and salt spice did not generate a strange or bad taste in the products; instead, the mixtures were less salty. However, the seasonings with lower sodium levels (F2 and F3) were better accepted in comparison to the traditional seasoning (F1). Therefore, a mixture of NaCl, KCl and monosodium glutamate is a viable alternative to develop a garlic and salt spice with reduced sodium intake.
