ABSTRACT Theobroma cacao (cocoa) in the Dominican Republic is one of the main export items, registering a sustained growth in the last five years. There are more than 36,000 producers in the country, indirectly benefiting more than 300 thousand people. The country has great potential for cocoa production, but due to the lack of fertilization of the plantations combined with the lack of information on the contribution of nutrients from the mineralization of biomass in the production systems, low yields are presented. The study was carried out in the Duarte province in the period from July 2016 to June 2017, with the objective of quantifying the biomass production in four agroforestry systems: cocoa in monoculture (C), cocoa plus Erythrina spp (C+ Am), cocoa plus Persea americana (C+Ag ), and cocoa plus citrus (C+Ci). A multifactorial experimental design 4x15x12 was used: with four agroforestry systems, in fifteen locations and twelve sampling dates, where each farm was considered as a replicate. Four pipe and sack mesh traps were installed per farm, with an area of 1 m2. The average biomass by location and date was analyzed by analysis of variance and Duncan test (P = 0.05 %). The highest average biomass production was obtained in C + Am with 49.3 T ha-1 year-1 (41.08% of the total). It was followed by system C with 27.02 T ha-1 year-1, C + Ag with 22.2 T ha-1 year-1 and C + Ci with 17.2 T ha-1 year-1. The annual net production was 120 T ha-1 year-1, of which 115.2 T ha-1 year-1 was attributable to the species under study, and 4.2 T ha-1 year-1 to other species. The values demonstrate a high biomass production in agroforestry systems associated with cocoa.

The application of cyanoacetic acid as a catalyst for the Biginelli reaction and as an active methylene compound for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction was evaluated. Using cyanoacetic acid as a Bronsted acid catalyst, after a synthetic optimization process, it was possible to synthesize eight dihydropyrimidinones with good yields (80-99%) using ethanol as solvent. It is the first time, to our knowledge, that the use of cyanoacetic acid is reported in the synthesis of this class of compounds, which have a wide bioactive potential. Also, cyanoacetic acid was used as a reagent in the Knoevenagel condensation, through which polyfunctionalized olefins were obtained and can be used as building blocks for structurally complex molecules. By using KOH as catalyst, eleven Knoevenagel adducts were synthesized with good yields (65-97%), under microwave irradiation as heating source, in water. Moreover, Knoevenagel adducts containing halogenated substituents (F, Cl) showed potential larvicidal activity with lethal concentrations (LC50) of 19.63, 33.84 µg mL 1 and LC90 of 27.46 and 48.16 µg mL1. This study showed the versatility of cyanoacetic acid as a catalyst for the synthesis of dihydropirimidinones, aldol compounds and presented the first study showing their larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti. evaluated process 8099% 8099 80 99% 99 (80-99% solvent time knowledge Also molecules 6597%, 6597 65 97% , 97 (65-97%) source water Moreover F, F (F Cl LC50 LC (LC50 1963 19 63 19.63 3384 33 84 33.8 LC9 2746 27 46 27.4 4816 48 16 48.1 mL1 dihydropirimidinones aegypti 809 8 9 (80-99 6597% 659 6 (65-97% LC5 (LC5 196 19.6 338 3 33. 274 2 4 27. 481 48. ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others. publications problem uptodate up date classifications context exception (CTFB http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/, httpfaunajbrjgovbr http //fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ , jbrj gov br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/) 2015 Brazil 80 specialists 1 2024 133691 133 691 133,69 125138 125 138 125,13 82.3%, 823 82 3 (82.3% 102000 102 000 102,00 7.69%, 769 7 69 (7.69% 11000 11 11,00 . 3,567 3567 567 (3,56 2,292 2292 2 292 (2,29 1,833 1833 833 (1,83 1,447 1447 447 (1,44 1000 1,00 831 (83 628 (62 606 (60 520 (52 50 users science health biology law anthropology education others http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ faunajbrjgovbr //fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/ 201 8 202 13369 13 133,6 12513 12 125,1 82.3% (82.3 10200 10 00 102,0 7.69% 76 6 (7.69 1100 11,0 3,56 356 56 (3,5 2,29 229 29 (2,2 1,83 183 83 (1,8 1,44 144 44 (1,4 100 1,0 (8 62 (6 60 52 (5 5 http//fauna.jbrj.gov.br (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br 20 1336 133, 1251 125, 82.3 (82. 1020 0 102, 7.69 (7.6 110 11, 3,5 35 (3, 2,2 22 (2, 1,8 18 (1, 1,4 14 4 ( 82.
Abstract Agroforestry systems and productive diversification are sustainable alternatives that reverse the damages and risks of conventional agriculture. There are few sustainability studies that allow them to be incorporated into projects aimed at increasing profitability and improving the welfare of producers, restoring ecosystem services. The objective was to assess the sustainability of two traditional agroforestry systems, diversified with cacao and vanilla, in the states of Veracruz and Oaxaca. Agroecological techniques and business development strategies were promoted with the families of both producers. The research was carried out during the period: February 2012 to July 2020, the plots are located in the municipalities of San Pedro Ixcatlán, Oaxaca and Papantla, Veracruz. The methodology of the framework of assessment of natural resource management systems was used. The results showed that the initial states had a low intensive management, low use of inputs, high diversification and oriented to subsistence agriculture. After diversification, agroecological management and business development, transition states have improved in most sustainability indicators. In particular, profitability (benefit-cost index), which reached 1.2 for San Pedro and 2.6 for Papantla when added value is given to vanilla and cacao. The participation of women in emerging activities derived from diversification and the interest of young people to continue with activities of transformation of raw materials and the commercialization of value-added products are relevant.

This study evaluated the pollutant levels (NO2, SO2, CO, and O3), air quality index (AQI) and the influence of meteorological variables and coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic on the air quality in Rio de Janeiro. The data set used comprises periods before (March-April, 2019) and during pandemic (March-April, 2020). According to the AQI results, on most days, the air quality was ranked as “good”. Brazilian air quality standards for SO2, O3, and NO2 were not exceeded in any of the monitoring stations during partial lockdown, while CO exceeded in all periods in one site due to industrial emission. Comparing both periods, descriptive statistics for the meteorological parameters presented no differences, which suggests similar conditions. However, when evaluated week by week in 2020, weather conditions presented some differences that probably affected pollutant concentrations. The correlations between O3 and NO2 and some meteorological parameters indicate that variations in both favored ozone formation, since it is a photochemical process favored by temperature and solar radiation and that, in Rio de Janeiro, low NO2 concentrations lead to increased O3. The improvements on air quality during the partial lockdown may be attributed mainly to a reduction on emission sources rather than weather conditions. Abstract Poisson distribution is a popular discrete model used to describe counting information, from which traditional control charts involving count data, such as the c and u charts, have been established in the literature. However, several studies recognize the need for alternative control charts that allow for data overdispersion, which can be encountered in many fields, including ecology, healthcare, industry, and others. The Bell distribution, recently proposed by Castellares et al. (2018), is a particular solution of a multiple Poisson process able to accommodate overdispersed data. It can be used as an alternative to the usual Poisson (which, although not nested in the Bell family, is approached for small values of the Bell distribution) Poisson, negative binomial, and COM-Poisson distributions for modeling count data in several areas. In this paper, we consider the Bell distribution to introduce two new exciting, and useful statistical control charts for counting processes, which are capable of monitoring count data with overdispersion. The performance of the so-called Bell charts, namely Bell-c and Bell-u charts, is evaluated by the average run length in numerical simulation. Some artificial and real data sets are used to illustrate the applicability of the proposed control charts. information literature However overdispersion fields ecology healthcare industry others al 2018, 2018 , (2018) which, (which family binomial COMPoisson COM areas paper exciting processes socalled so called Bellc Bellu simulation 201 (2018 20 (201 2 (20 (2 (

ABSTRACT Two multivariate methods were adopted to classify salt-tolerant cotton genotypes based on their growth and physiological traits. The genotypes were cultivated in a greenhouse and subjected to 45 days of irrigation with saline water from the V4 phase onwards. Irrigation was performed with saline water with electrical conductivity (ECw) of 6.0 dS m-1. A factorial-randomized block design was adopted with nine cultivars, two treatments of ECw (0.6 as the control, and 6.0 dS m-1), and four replicates. Plants were evaluated for growth, gas exchange, and photosynthesis. The data were statistically analyzed using univariate and multivariate methods. For the latter, non-hierarchical (principal component, PC) and hierarchical (UPGMA) models were used for the classification of cultivars. Significant differences were found between cultivars based on univariate analyses, and the traits that differed statistically were used for multivariate analyses. Four groups were identified with the same composition in both the PC and UPGMA methods. Among them, one contained the cultivars BRS Seridó, BRS 286, FMT 705, and BRS Rubi, which were tolerant to salt stress imposed on the plants. Photosynthesis, transpiration, and stomatal conductance data were the main contributors to the classification of cultivars using the principal component method.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To analyze the effects of Anacardium occidentale Linn on the healing of skin wounds. Methods: Twenty Wistar male rats were distributed into four groups (with five animals each one): negative control group (NCG), treated with saline solution; cashew tree group (CG), treated with hydroalcoholic extract of the bark of A. occidentale Linn; manipulated cashew tree group (MCG), with the ointment of extract of the bark of A. occidentale Linn; positive control group (PCG), treated with sunflower oil. All animals were examined daily, observing the macroscopic aspects of the surgical wound. Hematoxylin-eosin staining was used for tissue morphology analysis and Masson’s trichrome for better collagen fiber characterization. Results: On day 7, the MCG group had the expansion of the surgical wound covered by crust, exceeding the initial limits. On day 21, the wounds were observed to be completely closed and epithelialized in the NCG and CG groups. PCG and MCG still had remnants of crusts on the wound. The NCG was the only one not to present an abscess in histopathological analysis. Conclusions: There was a prolongation of the healing phase of the animals treated with the extract, and the animals in the NCG showed a better outcome by histological analysis. ABSTRACT Aims: Assess the incidence of COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic in 40 hemodialysis units in Spain. Material and methods: We analyzed 396 Rt-PCR performed March 14th to April 28th, 2020 in a cohort of 2398 hemodialysis (HD) patients corresponding to 19 hospital units and 21 satellite centers. Results: We performed Rt-PCR in 14% of the patients, with a marked variability depending on the location. The overall COVID-19 incidence was 3.2% (range 0-15.9%). It was significantly higher in the hospital units (4.5%) than in the satellite units (1.9%) (p=0.0003). There was a positive and significant correlation between the COVID-19 incidence in the units and their proximity to Madrid (R2=0.6235, p=0.0013), which was the main epidemic focus. Conclusion: Our study showed a low incidence of COVID-19 in HD, higher in hospital units and closer to Madrid.

Abstract Zea mays L. var. canteño (Poaceae) “maíz morado” has a high nutricional quality and is grown in nutrient-deficient soils. In these conditions, microorganisms such as Rhizophagus irregularis act as fertilizers. The objective of this research was to determine the growth and mycorrhization of purple corn inoculated with R. irregularis. Plants were grown under greenhouse conditions using sand and moss as substrate and La Molina nutrient solution. Treatments were 0; 1; 2; 3,5; 5 and 8 g of R. irregularis inoculum. Shoot length, root length and mycorrhization were evaluated at 28, 35 and 42 days of treatment. It was found that inoculation with different inoculum quantities induced significant differences in mycorrhization, shoot length and root length. Treatment with 2g increased mycorrhization, shoot length and root length at 42 days. Correlation analysis demonstrated correlation between inoculum quantity, mycorrhization and root length. It is concluded that R. irregularis produces an increase in mycorrhization percentage, shoot length and root length in purple corn.

Abstract “Tomato” Solanum lycopersicum L. (Solanaceae) is a vegetable with a high demand for human consumption. However, it is susceptible to salinity, which causes reduction in growth and development in this crop. One of the agronomical practices that alleviates salt stress is inoculation with mycorrhizal fungi. The objective of this research was to determine the effect of NaCl and Rhizophagus irregularis on the growth of tomato under greenhouse conditions. For that purpose, tomato plantlets were treated with three inoculum concentrations (0; 1.5; 3g) and then submitted to three NaCl concentrations (0, 100 y 200mM) for 30 days. Then the growth variables were evaluated. Results show that treatments induced significant differences in tomato growth. Increasing levels of salinity induced reduction of all variables measured with the exception of root length. Meanwhile, inoculum concentrations induced growth on stem length, stem diameter, number of leaves, number of internodes, stem fresh weight and root fresh weight. Inoculation with mycorrhiza induced a reduction in the growth arrest caused by salinity.

Abstract Soil salinity is a serious problem that affects Zea mays L. (Poaceae) productivity. The objective of this research was to quantify proline in roots and leaves of Z. mays L. var. canteño treated with Rhizophagus irregularis and 0, 25, 50 and 100 mM NaCl. 7-day-old plantlets of Z. mays L. var. canteño were sown in a mixture of sand and moss and then inoculated with R. irregularis. The plants were watered to field capacity with the saline solutions for 60 days. Then, the leaf and root proline contents and mycorrhization percentage were determined. Significant differences were found in leaf and roots proline levels in purple corn. In roots, the proline content increased with NaCl concentration without significant differences in regards to R. irregularis inoculation. In leaves, proline was induced by NaCl, while the inoculation with R. irregularis decreased the proline levels in NaCl concentration of 25, 50 y 100mM. In conclusion, the amount of leaf and root proline in Z. mays L. var. canteño showed significant changes in plants inoculated with R. irregularis and treated with 0, 25, 50 and 100 mM NaCl.

Abstract In this paper, we discuss several mathematical properties and estimation methods for a reparameterized version of the weighted Lindley (RWL) distribution. The RWL distribution can be particularly useful for modeling reliability (survival) data with bathtub-shaped or increasing hazard rate function. The inferential procedure to obtain the parameter estimates is conducted via the maximum likelihood approach considering random right-censoring. Extensive numerical simulations are carried out to investigate and evaluate the performance of the proposed estimation method. Finally, the potentiality of the RWL model is analyzed by employing two real data sets.

Abstract Salinity is an abiotic factor that produces a decrease in crop yields, plants respond by modifying their gene expression and inducing changes in protein synthesis. The objective was to determine the effect of Rhizophagus irregularis and NaCl on the electrophoretic pattern of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. (Solanaceae). Tomato plants were inoculated with R. irregularis (0, 1.5 and 3 g of inoculum) and treated with 0, 100 and 200 mM NaCl, for 30 days. Then, the total soluble protein content is quantified by the Bradford method and its electrophoretic pattern is evaluated by SDS- PAGE on leaves and roots. The total soluble protein content in the compliant leaves increases the amount of inoculum of R. irregularis, while in the adjusted conforming roots the concentration of NaCl increases; as for its electrophoretic pattern, in leaves, a 111 kDa protein appears due to the effect of NaCl and R. irregularis; in roots a protein of 73 kDa appears; In addition, changes in the intensity of some bands in leaves and roots were observed. Possibly these changes are consequences of the alteration of protein synthesis due to the ionic and osmotic imbalance generated by NaCl.

Abstract Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation.
